One of the highlights of Stampede is the Mountain Race that happens in all four days of rodeo performances this weekend. Cyril Vigeant is living every parent’s nightmare. This week Cyril’s son Kyle, 22, died following a single vehicle incident on Chimney Lake Road, which police have associated with theft and fraud. “I would like the community to know my son was in no way involved with these people or these thefts,” Mr. Vigeant said Thursday. Kyle was born and raised in Williams Lake, and worked a variety of jobs in the community before settling in as an assistant manager at Best Buy Propane. His dad says Kyle was known for his upbeat, reliable personality. “He was there for anyone that needed help. He had time for anyone, and was always looking out for the underdog.” See RCMP, Page A3

Stampede action starts today GREG SABATINO You can bet your boots rodeo fans will be singing praises to the rodeo gods when the 87th annual Williams Lake Stampede rides into town with not just four, but five, performances this weekend. Fred Thomas, president of the Williams Lake Stampede Association, said this year’s rodeo will feature around 400 contestants battling for $160,000 in prize money spread over five rodeo performances, some of who are the best in the world. He said the decision to add an extra rodeo performance on Friday morning to the Stampede will give spectators another opportunity to see some of the top cowboys and cowgirls compete. “Instead of having another per-

formance what we’ve had is what they call in the rodeo trade, slack, where people compete but they don’t compete in front of a paid audience,” Thomas said. “So what we did was eliminated the slack. It’s good for some of the rough stock cowboys, too, because it gives them another opportunity to compete at a time when it allows them to get to other rodeos.” Thomas said this year’s talent pool is also one of the deepest he’s seen in years. On Friday the reigning world all-around champion and seventime world all-around champion, Trevor Brazile of Texas, will be competing in tie-down roping, team roping and possibly steer wrestling. Additionally, Chilliwack native

Lee Graves, the 2005 Steer Wrestling World Champion and fivetime Canadian steer wrestling champion, is back healthy this season and will be competing in tie-down roping, team roping and steer wrestling. “There’s a lot of good contestants here this year,” he said. “I took a look at the contestant list the other day and in the top 20 of the world standings right now we probably have seven to 10 of those contestants coming here to Williams Lake. A lot of them are Americans.” A new rodeo clown, Brian Potter, will also make his debut at this year’s Stampede. Potter is from Newville, Alabama, and the Stampede will be his first working trip anywhere in Canada. Potter will be joined by 20-year

rodeo announcing veteran, Alberta’s Tyson Pietsch. Rodeo performances go twice on Friday — the first at 11:45 a.m. followed by the second at 5:45 p.m. Friday’s evening performance will also feature the exchange of the Williams Lake Stampede Queen and Princess crowns. On Saturday the third rodeo gets underway at 12:45 p.m. Sunday’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink rodeo goes, again, at 12:45 p.m., before Monday’s fifth rodeo at 1 p.m. concludes the weekend’s festivities. Tickets to the Stampede are available at the Stampede Office behind the grandstand at the Stampede Grounds. For a complete schedule of events visit www.williamslakestampede.com.

RCMP clarify aspects of fatal crash Continued from A01 But it may have been that kindness that led Kyle to get in the vehicle early Monday morning after work. Just a few short hours after his son said goodnight, the vehicle Kyle was a passenger in lost control.

I come from a musical family. My grandfather and his brother played in a band—or orchestra as it was called back then. They often provided the music at the community hall for dances. My father plays “by ear”. He doesn’t read sheet music but is able to listen to a tune and pick it out on any of his many instruments; piano, fiddle, guitar, accordion or banjo. My oldest sister plays the piano and my middle sister plays the saxophone. And then there is me. Other than being able to single-handedly hammer out a mean version of “Mary had a little lamb” on the piano the only thing I really excelled at playing was my records and later CD’s. Today I

Mr. Vigeant said his son was killed, and his son’s friend, who was also in the vehicle, is in hospital with critical injuries. “I don’t want people to think they had the wrong impression of my boy. He was not involved with these people, other

mostly play music downloaded onto my MP3. When it comes to singing, as the saying goes, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. The closest I ever got to being a musician was one brief year in Grade four when I found myself part of a group called “The Wire Choir.’ Our little band consisted of six girls who played guitars and sang. The only thing I liked about it

than the mistake of getting in their vehicle,” Mr. Vigeant said. Tuesday the RCMP said the 21-year-old driver of the vehicle and a passenger fled the scene following the crash and stole another vehicle from a nearby residence, before being appre-

hended by police. Police said both men are from Alberta and the driver had outstanding warrants from that province. Police also reported one person died at the scene, one person was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Another person was arrested without in-

cident at the scene. Police also said the group of males involved in the crash were involved with fraud and theft in and around Williams Lake. Thursday Williams Lake RCMP Insp. Warren Brown clarified the “deceased is not a suspect in these offences.

The people we have in custody are believed to be involved in other property offences..” Mr. Vigeant said: “My son was always giving people a second, and third and fourth chance. He said there’s always good in someone, you just had to find it. Kyle’s

biggest mistake was his heart. It always seems to be the good who dies in situations like this.” Services for Kyle Vigeant will be held at Compassionate Care Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6. A celebration of life will follow at the Elk’s Hall at 1 p.m.

was making the macramé guitar strap and buying picks at the music store. The picks came in a huge assortment of gorgeous colours from hot pink to iridescent metallic gold and back then they were priced something like 10 for a dollar. I loved that music store with all its mysterious ingredients. And I loved the idea of being a musician. But I hated playing that guitar. My fingers were clumsy, the strings hurt my fingers and the only way I was able to make the chord changes was to watch the teacher’s hands like a hawk. The goal was to enter the music festival and compete with other schools. We practiced every afternoon for weeks

on end. As the festival drew near the teacher took me aside and suggested I mouth the words since I was throwing everyone off key. Unfortunately it turned out I even mouthed the words out of synch. When our big moment came we took to the stage, strummed and sang only to have the adjudicator inform us she had to dock points because the red headed girl on the left was only pretending to sing. That would be me. The whole thing was so demoralizing that I never played or sang—or pretended to sing--in public again. Ah well, if we were all on the stage making music there wouldn’t be an audience. Someone needs to face the music and clap.

And as luck would have it, I am an excellent clapper. I might not clap in rhythm, but rest assured I can slap my hands together rather nicely. I can even cheer. And if need be, I can do a bit of raucous foot stomping too. But I can’t whistle worth a darn. Such is life. The other weekend we took in the Sweetwater 905 Arts Festival that takes place every year on Emilie and Larry Mattson’s family farm just outside of Rolla BC. Emilie is a gifted artist in a myriad of mediums whose work fills both her studio and yard. One of my favourite pieces is a boat she made out of cow placenta; a boat she once sailed down the creek in just to prove it wasn’t just form

it was also functional. Some of you may have seen it at her show at the art gallery a few years back. Today, if you stand in the alleyway of Emilie and Larry’s barn, you can see the boat out the back door perched on the peak of a roof on an old log building as if it were washed up after an epic flood. Such is the magic of the Mattson farm. Sons Karl and Dean are also talented artists as well as musicians. The annual festival brings together poets, visual artists, musicians and hundreds of people whose dedicated craft for the weekend is creating an appreciative audience. At one point during the festival a singer took

the stage and said in a quick aside to the band, “In the key of A.” For a moment I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy followed by a twang of exclusion from knowing I will never be part of that group who knows what being “in the key of A” means. It’s the same sort of melancholy I get when I watch someone intently tuning an instrument or testing a sound system. It’s about being on the outside looking in. But then the music started, the singer sang and the audience was swept along for the ride. I clapped my hands, stomped my feet, bought a CD to play later and it was all good. Nah, it was better than good. It was grand.

AN APPLE A DAY... It’s important that diabetics be familiar with the “ABCs” of diabetes. These are A1C test, Blood pressure and Cholesterol. The A1C is a blood test to see how good your diabetes management has been for the past 3 months. The goal is to keep it below 7. Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol readings as low as possible will also keep diabetic complications at bay. Speaking of blood pressure, five million Canadians have high blood pressure. This represents 19% of the adult population. Since you can’t feel high blood pressure, it’s important to have it checked regularly. High blood pressure can do damage to the body and increase the probability of getting diabetes and heart problems. Health Canada says a drug is OK for use in Canada based on all the information available about that drug at the time. After release, some information about the drug may surface that wasn’t in the original submission. Patients can help by reporting any adverse effects to their doctor and pharmacist. These health professionals can report to Health Canada to add to the drug database. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem many men are hesitant to talk about. Cabinet rookies handed hot files

B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER

There are nine new faces in Premier Christy Clark’s cabinet, seven of them elected to the B.C. legislature for the first time on May 14. They have been handed some of the hottest problems, and Clark’s marching orders in “mandate letters” for each ministry. And this is the start of a four-year term, when unpopular reforms are attempted. Take Amrik Virk, the former RCMP inspector from Surrey who’s suddenly in charge of advanced education. His mandate includes: “Review the student loan program to make recommendations for improvement to ensure the loan program is meeting the needs of today’s students.” Virk must also set targets to “match the skills we need with the skills we are graduating” and require post-secondary schools to “ensure student seats are being filled.” B.C. can’t afford to keep cranking out university grads with $50,000 in debt and no job prospects in a system that’s subsidized 65 per cent. Virk will be working closely with Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who must “ensure seamless transitions” from high school to the workforce for

post-secondary trades and apprenticeships. In his spare time, Fassbender is to overhaul the school district bargaining agency and achieve a 10year peace with the teachers’ union. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton has worked as a Crown prosecutor, so she’ll have some insight into the system that still grapples with Stanley Cup rioters from two summers ago. Her orders are to get traffic tickets and other administrative penalties out of the courts, keep working on integrating police fiefdoms and generally treat the constipation that afflicts law enforcement

today. Oh, and get that new Okanagan prison built, to relieve a system that has inmates living in tents. And examine whether to spin off the Liquor Distribution Branch into a Crown corporation, a possible prelude to selling it. Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s first test was a grilling by the Vancouver media. Yup, this Kamloops hayseed has been to the Big Smoke a few times, ridden that fancy SkyTrain and taken the odd ferry, too. Now he has to impose the ferry route reductions that have been worked on by two previous ministers,

and push Metro Vancouver through a referendum on ways to fund its own transit. If more tolls or taxes are going to be implemented, now is the time. Coralee Oakes has made a political leap from Quesnel city hall to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. One of her key tasks is to invent a framework for a “rural dividend” from liquefied natural gas development in northwestern B.C. Oakes has to figure out how to “better provide provincial support” to sport and cultural organizations, but do it with no

new money. All ministers have strict instructions to balance their lean budgets and take part in the latest “core review” to identify government functions that can be sold, delegated or shut down. New Minister of International Trade Richmond’s Teresa Wat has to find a way to continue the growth of lumber and other exports to China, India and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim. On top of that, the always-delicate softwood lumber agreement with the U.S. expires in three years. The last major eruption on that front was in 2009, when B.C. cut stumpage

rates for remote coastal areas to give communities much-needed employment. The Americans were livid, just as they were with our beetle-kill harvesting efforts. And of course, the U.S.-directed environmental movement continues to target Canadian industries. Third-term MLA John Rustad gets aboriginal relations, with specific instructions to deal with gas and perhaps oil pipelines through his Nechako Lakes constituency. Barkerville Theatre Royal Gala Opening by Chris Nickless

Sunshine, blue skies, bears, fox and enthusiastic theatre goers were all part of the Gala Opening day for Newman and Wright’s Theatre Royal in Barkerville June 15. The afternoon reception saw dignitaries from Prince George, Quesnel, The Cariboo Regional District and the South Cariboo partake of a sumptuous dim sum buffet while Barkerville’s operations manager James Douglas welcomed guests and told the attendees about some exciting things in the future for the provincial heritage site. Newman and Wright’s afternoon and evening performances were well attended and proved to be equally, if not greater than performances in years past. No visit to Barkerville is complete without taking in one or more of the Theatre Royal’s most excellent productions. Well done Richard, Amy and the whole theatre group. At the evening performance, a short but hilarious auction took place, helping the theatre’s bank account but more importantly providing a highly entertaining bonus for all the attendees. A visit to the Barkerville Historic Site and Theatre Royal should be a bucket-list must for this year.

Street actors are a highlight of a trip back into history in Barkerville. Barkerville Manager of Visitor Experiences James Douglas, left, CRD Director John Massier, Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom, Wells Mayor Robin Sharpe and CRD Director Al Richmond were all on hand to celebrate the gala event.

$500 top prize in Daybreak Rotary Stampede Parade Today is the last day to get registered for the Daybreak Rotary Stampede Parade that rolls tomorrow morning in downtown Williams Lake. The theme this year is Fun N’ Games and it’s not too late to enter a float! “We’re approaching 70 entries so we should be over 100 by the time we’re done,” said Erik Zwiers, one of five parade marshals organizing the parade this year. There are entries coming from around 100 Mile, Quesnel, Prince George. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Alex Debogorski, from the History Channel’s Ice Road Truckers, who will be driving in the parade for James Western Star Truck & Trailer. “You’re going to see a lot of everything: a lot of horses, a lot of First Nation floats, a lot of

The parade starts at 10 a.m. for those who want to watch and the route will be the same as last year: following Fourth Avenue from Proctor Street, turning left on Borland heading right onto Oliver, and

then straight down until it turns right on First Avenue, ending on the corner of Proctor and First. For entries however, registration and assembly starts at 7 a.m. and the judging happens at 8 a.m. precisely. The best themed entry wins a $500 cash

prize. New this year is a $250 prize for the best dressed animal (that isn’t a horse). There will also be a $100 prize for the best live musical band. “We wanted to try something different and see if people wanted to bring some of their pets along,” said Zwiers. “We are hoping that

This two-bedroom home exudes old-fashioned charm but still incorporates all the modern conveniences demanded by today’s families. And, since plans include an unfinished basement, there’s room for expansion. A gabled porch shelters the entrance, which leads into a roomy foyer. Directly ahead, over a half wall, is the great room — part of an open-plan family area. Here, a fireplace will provide warmth during the cooler months, while access to the covered desk beyond will make al fresco living attractive during the summertime. The dining room, which also enjoys access to the deck, is separated from the kitchen by a large prep island. The kitchen’s L-shaped counter configuration will save steps for the cook. The walk-in pantry is open to the laundry room, as well as the double garage, easing the chore of unloading a car full of groceries. The garage is roomy enough for storing off-season gear or perhaps a compact workshop. The master suite, which enjoys access to the covered deck, boasts a four-piece ensuite with double basins to ease the morning rush hour. A soaker tub adds a touch of luxury. Nearby, a flight of stairs leads to the unfinished basement. The second bedroom, located at the front of the

house, enjoys its own three-piece bathroom, as well as an extra-wide windowsill. Exterior finishes include narrow vertical and horizontal siding, with painted woodwork and trim. Pilasters flanking the entrance and near the garage have stone bases. This home measures 40 feet wide by 60 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,594 square feet. Plans for design 1-2-609 are available for $676 (set of 5), $766 (set of 8) and $819 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 7% P.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. Our NEW 45TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
