No sign of missing man
Very dangerous conditions hampering the search SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Starting July 1, the region could see temperatures in the mid to high 30s, warns Environment Canada
One day in and there is still no sign of a man believed to have crashed into the Bull River east of Cranbrook on Tuesday night. Cpl. Pat Prefontaine of Cranbrook RCMP said that Wednesday saw a concentration of search and rescue (SAR) on the spot just above the Aberfeldie Dam. “Significant resources were put into play yesterday including numerous SAR teams from

The phrase “come hell or high water”, adopted by the Calgary Stampede in the past week, may prove to be even more true for the East Kootenay. Environment Canada meteorologists are predicting that beginning on Canada Day, temperatures throughout the region will sit around the mid-30s, and perhaps reach the high-30s. “And that’s probably a bit conservative,” said B.C. meteorologist Doug Lundquist. “We are seeing above us the warmest air at least in our part of the planet if not the whole planet.”

all over the East Kootenay and some from the West Kootenay. Speciality teams included swift water rescue, rope rescue and ground search and rescue. Two SAR helicopters were on scene yesterday as was our police dog,” said Cpl. Prefontaine. “The vehicle has not been located and neither has the driver. Some articles from the vehicle have been recovered downstream.”

The more than 250 members of the Mount Baker Secondary School Class of 2013 celebrated their great achievement Thursday with Convocation Ceremonies at Western Financial Place. The grads met at MBSS for pictures then marched en masse to the arena. The prom takes place tonight at St. Eugene Mission Resort. Congratulations, and health, happiness and prosperity to you all.
Trees recently planted in Kinsmen Park were found snapped in half Thursday morning. Seven trees of assorted varieties were vandalized overnight Wednesday. The trees were planted in May as
part of Arbour Day and a beautification project the City, with BC Hydro, was doing. The City estimated the cost of the vandalism to be $3,000, which doesn’t include removal and replanting costs.

Wasa situation ‘hopeful’ going into weekend Sandbaggers remain on scene, but the lake is rising much slower now, according to the regional district C AROLYN GR ANT Daily Bulletin
Wasa Lake rose only one inch overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, good news for residents and RDEK staff dealing with the flood. That means it’s rising but rising more slowly, giving hope that things just might be getting better, says the RDEK’s Loree Duczek. “We believe the lake may be nearing peak,” she said Thursday. “We are very, very hopeful that things may get better over the weekend.” If that is the case it will be very good news, not just for Wasa residents, but for RDEK staff dealing with a flood crisis that has stretched from one end of the regional district to the other. Duczek said that they have received some additional staff from municipalities. “We are very grateful to have secured additional help,” she said. “The City of Cranbrook has sent people for the weekend and the District of Invermere gave us some staff as well.
“This has been an unprecedented response in terms of staff.” Duczek says RDEK management is very aware of the potential for staff burnout and is trying to make sure they shift out and get some rest.
“… There is still a lot of support necessary after flooding. When things die down, people still need support. Loree Duczek “We are working very very hard to maintain good staffing levels,” she said, adding that the situation is nowhere near over. “Wasa is still in the active response phase, though we hope things are stabilizing. And there is still a lot of support necessary after flooding. When things die down, people still need support. You have to make sure they have all the information they need about safe
drinking water, clean-up kits, eligibility for relief. And they need emotional support too.” For example, RDEK staff in the Hosmer area were at the community hall Thursday night at an open house that was put together to help people affected by the Elk Valley floods. A team was there to talk to them and provide emotional support. Back in Wasa, the RDEK has requested that people keep their boats off the lake this long weekend. “The water is literally lapping at the door of some homes and cabins. In other areas, residents have spent hours and hours sandbagging to protect their homes and our concern is that the wake and rough waters caused by boats could not only increase water in the affected homes, but knock down the sandbags that have been so carefully placed. BC Parks has closed the boat launches at the lake and we are urging property owners and visitors to leave their boats parked this weekend.”
Soaring temperatures coming Continued from page 1 The heat wave will come about as B.C.’s monsoon season, which has buffeted the East Kootenay with extreme rain and flooding over the past week, finishes up this weekend, a little earlier than in normal years. “This year we are going to be lucky and we will see the whole monsoon season end about a week earlier than normal,” said Lundquist. “When we do so, it’s normally like a switch flipping. “There are some potential flies in the ointment, like high level cloud, the fact that the ground has been cool and wet for a little bit, that might mute it a little bit. But certainly I expect we will see record breaking temperatures.” Now Environment Canada is reminding people how to be careful during extreme summer weather, with the key risks being lightning, wind, heat and rain. “One of the concerns in the hot weather is staying hydrated. We don’t get a lot of humidity in the B.C. interior but we have dry air and in the heat we can dry out very quickly. So staying hydrated is very important during hot spells in

Last July, a storm brought a weather phenomenon called a “microburst” to Cranbrook with wind speeds up to 107 kilometres an hour, bringing down more than 600 trees across the city. The Weather Office is predicting a heat wave starting on Sunday, June 30 that could result in similar storms. the summer,” said Lundquist. Conditions inside parked cars can become unbearable in only a moment, he went on. “Don’t leave children and pets in parked cars even for a moment,” said Lundquist. If you have neighbours or relatives who live alone, especially if they don’t have air conditioning, check on them regularly. When there is a lightning storm, head inside as soon as you can hear thunder. “Remember the little saying, when thunder roars, go indoors. If you can hear thunder, the storm is close enough that it can be dangerous. It’s best to seek shelter and remain indoors for a full 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder,” said Lundquist. Most people who are hurt or killed by light-
ning are not struck directly. About 40 to 50 per cent of people killed are through ground contact with the current. Two-thirds of lightning victims are struck either ahead of the storm or after they think it has passed. If you can’t get inside, take shelter in the lowest possible area, such as a ravine or ditch, not under an isolated tree in a field. Keep your feet together and stay low. The B.C. interior can experience a weather phenomenon called a microburst after a summer storm. This is what caused Cranbrook’s severe wind storm last July when wind speeds reached 107 kilometres an hour. When it’s windy, the safest place is in a well constructed building, in a basement, away from
windows and with as many walls between you and outside as possible. Don’t go outside to try to save an awning or carport, for example. “People have been killed because they decided to go outside and try to save their overhangs or awnings and it blows away and hits them in the process,” said Lundquist. Finally, we are still at risk from wildfires, despite the flooding we have experienced this month. “Wildfires and smoke are another issue. We will start to see that very quickly after the heat starts to come. It won’t take too long and the fire fuels will dry out and create a weather situation that will be concerning the B.C. Forest Service,” said Lundquist. For more details on severe weather, visit www.weather.gc.ca.

Trees destroyed in second round of vandalism at Kinsmen Continued from page 1 “This is the second assault on the trees planted in partnership with BC Hydro,” said Chris Zettel, the city’s corporate communications officer. “The first incident saw vandals destroy one tree and throw it into Joseph Creek, while seriously damaging three others, which the City arbourist will hopefully be able to save.” The trees line Rotary Way along Kinsmen Park. Many of the trees were snapped in half and the posts surrounding them ripped from the ground and discarded nearby. “That’s what we found this morning,” said Les Hunter, Public Works supervisor. “I was going up there because the paving crew was paving the pathways to the bridges and I went, ‘Oh no, what did these people do this time?’” Only a week before, trees further down the path, near the bridge, were also vandalized. One tree was ripped right out of the ground and thrown in Joseph Creek, along with some barricades. They pulled out some of
the stakes around the trees, vandalizing four in total. The city could repair three of the trees, but one was garbage as it was snapped. “Just one was broken; the other ones were just bent over and we were able to straighten them up, and they should be alright, but they never broke them that time,” said Hunter. Thursday morning they found seven trees in various states of disrepair. Up the pathway, a flower bed was also uprooted. “They ripped all the flowers out and threw them away too,” he said. “So somewhere out there our wonderful youths are walking through the park late at night, I don’t know what they’re on, and they’re just vandalizing the trees.” Hunter hopes that whoever was responsible for the vandalism feels some shame. “I don’t know what’s going on, but my feeling is they are just wasting the money, because now we have to replant them, it’s going to cost the city anywhere from $3,000 plus.” Hunter said the reason for the
expense is partly the trees themselves, as the trunks are 75 millimetres and not cheap at that size, as well as planting costs. “We lost six trees; the other one that’s bent over like that (arbourist Matt Pocock) thinks he can save,” he said. “We’re looking for a little help,” he said, hoping that anyone with information will call the city. Hunter said it would still be a while before new trees can be planted. “We have to order them, get them in, get our crew, because we have trees going in here at the green belt, and we thought that project was done, but we’re going to have to redo it,” he said, adding that they would also be planting more trees in Rotary and Moir parks. At Kinsmen Park in May, 27 trees were planted, by a team of City of Cranbrook and BC Hydro volunteers, along the bike path, as part of Arbour Day. If you have any information about the vandalism, please contact the City by calling 250-4264211 or by emailing zettel@cranbrook.ca.
Bull River too wild for search Continued from page 1

Search and Rescue scours the Bull River Wednesday.
On Thursday, Cpl. Prefontaine said there was going to be fewer search and rescue personnel on scene, because the river is very fast, turbulent and dangerous, making the search difficult. “There isn’t much that can be done other than watching the river for receding water and reduced turbidity,” he said. Police received a call at about 10 p.m. on
Tuesday, June 25 that a vehicle with a 20-yearold driver had crashed into the Bull River, about 25 kilometres up the Bull River Forest Service Road from Fort Steele Wardner Road, between the first and second bridges. RCMP are not currently releasing the identity of the missing driver, but family and friends were at the scene Wednesday assisting with the search.

Just a cautionary note for those who enjoy hiking the ski hill. Hikers have spotted two grizzlies in that area this week. Brian Copping, Lift Operations Manager for the Kimberley Alpine Resort, confirmed that the bears were seen on Tuesday. “They were spotted once on the
Caper ski run this week,” he said. “I don’t know if they are still there or not. But it is that time of year when bears are around.” Copping says it is a bit unusual to see grizzlies in that area — black bears are far more common — but it’s not unheard of. Hikers are reminded to bring their bear spray and perhaps hike in groups rather than alone.

Discovering the Great American Novelist
I
n October of 1983 the New York Times sung the praises of a “LaBrava”— a book by a new writer named Elmore Leonard. The Times were not alone in their critical acclaim, as numerous publications also raved about this unique work, a novel about human weakness and those who prey on it. The discovery of Leonard as a bright new talent seemed unanimous, and in 1984 “LaBrava” won the Best Novel of the Year award from the Mystery Writers of America. Leonard told reporters it was “nice to be discovered,” which only added to his own, if not everyone’s embarrassment. “LaBrava” was actually Leonard’s 23rd novel. It had taken him three decades to become an overnight sensation.
Born in 1925 and raised in Michigan, Leonard attended the University of Detroit after serving in World War II. He found work writing copy for an ad agency in 1950, but what he really wanted to do was write novels. Working full-time and raising five kids made this a bit of a challenge, but he somehow forced himself to get up at 5 a.m. every day and write for two hours before leaving for work. By 1960, Leonard had published 30 short stories, and five novels. All of these were westerns. “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Hombre” were by far his most popular, both being adapted into successful films. In 1966 he wrote “The Big Bounce” — his first effort in the mystery field. However, no one was interested; his publishers only wanted more westerns from

Mike Selby him. However a film company became interested in the story and Leonard was able to adapt it into a screenplay. The film version came out in 1969 (starring Ryan O’Neal), which was quickly followed by the publication of Leonard’s book. The film was a huge flop, and the book went unnoticed and unsold. Leonard stuck to crime and mystery writing, finding more and more success as the years went by. Holly-
wood became a large part of Leonard’s career, and his books seemed almost tailor-made for film adaptations. “Stick,” “The Moonshine War,” “Mr. Majestyk,” and “52 PickUp” were all published in the 1970s and made into movies. But it was “LaBrava” that took Leonard from just another genre-writer to a bona-fide novelist. Since then there has been a string of bestselling books, with Hollywood adapting virtually all of them: “Glitz,” “Touch,” “Freaky Deaky,” “Killshot,” “Get Shorty,” “Maximum Bob,” “Rum Punch” (filmed as “Jackie Brown”), “Pronto” (filmed as television series Justified), “Out of Sight,” and “Be Cool.” At 88, Leonard has shown no signs of slowing down. 2010’s “Djibouti” follows a female director trying to make

Guardian called Leonard “the great American novelist” who, instead of being forever pinned in different genres “has created something all his own.” I am sure his
readers would agree. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public LIbrary

‘The Great Cattle Caper’ just might steele your heart Fort Steele’s Wild Horse Theatre cast of “The Great Cattle Caper” kicks off the summer with a snappy and witty performance K ait y Brown
“The Great Cattle Caper,” the newest production of the Fort Steele Theatrical Society at the Wild Horse Theatre, is a must see when you hit the old-timey town. The play is performed alternately by two separate casts — this review follows the student cast. An adult cast will on different days perform a slightly more ribald version of the same play. The cattle are going missing, and Johnny, the town anti-hero, has been framed as the thief. He has lost the trust of the sherriff, his ma and even Mary, the cute-as-a-button girl next door. Suspicions are high when someone suggests it’s an inside job and suddenly everyone is finger pointing. Will Johnny be able to earn back the trust of his fellow townsfolk or will he be pinned as the culprit? The cast of six is all drawn from the Cranbrook area: Cameron Lomon (Johnny), Emma Schraepel (Mary), Michael Carr (Henrietta — you read that right), Kyah Schraepel (Annabelle), Nathan Staplin (Sheriff Pierre) and Carter Gulseth (Sam). They’re all quick on the draw, literally, and with
their lines too, ridiculing each other, scolding each other and encouraging each other throughout the twist and turns in the plot. Pacing is crucial for these kinds of comedies and no one drops the ball here. Lomon nailed his performance as Johnny, the lovable doofus the story centres around. His line delivery is hilarious, and his energy contagious. The audience interactions he makes are priceless. With furrowed brow and stupefied look, he takes his village idiot routine over the top. Michael Carr plays Henrietta, Johnny’s mother — despite common theatrical cross-dressing convention, Carr doesn’t sound like a man trying to sound like a woman. He lets himself sound just like a man. His stage presence was huge, standing broad shouldered and showing off his hairy legs in that dress (consider yourself warned). “Henrietta” serves as a kind of fifth business, with sharp and sarcastic commentary that adds a devastating gloss to the actions of the others. Nathan Staplin plays Pierre, the French-Canadian Mountie — a knobby-kneed short-stop of a
sherriff was another excellently done performance. What else can I say except that he was adorable? His adorability was enhanced by his panic attacks whenever Miss Annabelle confronted him about his affections for her. Somebody get him a wing-man! Kyah Schraepel’s Miss Annabelle is wickedly sassy — a saloon-girl bar-keep mother-figure, but with a sassy and risqué twist. Her character contributes a little more “mature humour” for parents. She was a strong no-nonsense say-what-you mean girl. Carter Gulseth’s Sam presents a two-faced, intense and blood-thirsty side to contrast with his cackling and crazy-eyed side. In many ways, Gulseth’s performance grounds the play. Emma Schraepel’s Mary’s soft-spoken, southern drawl makes her as cute as a button. Although she’s head-over-heels in love with Johnny, she has spunk too, threatening to leave town forever to get his attention. Again, this one is a mustsee. For times and more information, visit www.fortsteele.ca.
Pictured left to right: Cameron Lomon as Johnny, Emma Schraepel as Mary and Carter Gulseth as Sam for Fort Steele’s “The Great Cattle Caper”, a comedy about town hero Johnny who has to clear his name after he has been framed. The play is light-hearted and family-friendly and sure to bring lots of laughs. The play runs from June 29 until Sept 2 at 1 p.m. daily at the Wild Horse Theatre at Fort Steele.

The proposed Nicaraguan canal
O
n 11 June, the Nicaraguan parliament voted in favour of building a $40 billion canal across the country connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Since the country is dirt poor, the money would have to come from international investors. It would be raised by a Hong Kongbased firm, HKDN Group, which in return would get the right to build and run the canal for 50 years. But nobody outside Nicaragua took the plan very seriously. On 15 June, Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, and Wang Jing, the owner of HKDN, signed a contract that gives the Central American nation 51 percent of the company’s shares. Wang said the capital could easily be raised from Chinese companies and international banks — but since his only business experience has been in running telecommunications firm Xinwei Telecom, again nobody took much notice. So on 25 June, Wang went public. Speaking in Beijing, he said that he had already attracted global investors. Work on the canal would start in 2014, and it would be open by 2020. “We don’t want it to become an international joke, and we don’t want it to turn into an example of Chinese investment failures,” he said, adding that returns on the project were “sure to make every investor smile broadly.” Promoters always talk like that, and there would still not be much reason to take Wang and Ortega seriously if it were not for one fact: Chinese businessmen do not launch projects of this scale with-
out the support of the Chinese government. The risk of embarrassment is just too high. Wang denies that he has official support, of course: “I am a very normal Chinese citizen. I couldn’t be more normal.” But if Beijing really is behind the project, then it may actually happen. So what would be the implications of a 286-km. (178Gwynne mile) waterway connecting the Caribbean with the Dyer Pacific via Lake Nicaragua. For Nicaragua, they would be huge. The Nicaraguan government claims that work on the Great Interoceanic Canal and associated projects — a “dry canal” freight railway, an airport and two duty-free zones — could double Nicaragua’s GDP and triple employment by 2018. In a country that still does not have a proper highway connecting its two coasts, that would change everything. For Panama, whose existing canal has been the mainstay of the country’s economy for a century, the competition would be very serious. A $5 billion project to double the Panama Canal’s capacity by building a third chain of locks across the isthmus is nearing completion, but it will still be restricted to taking ships of 65,000 tons or less. The rival canal in Nicaragua would be able to accommodate the new generation of ships ranging up to 250,000 tons, but there will not be enough shipping to keep both canals in business unless world trade continues to expand rapidly. In any case competition in transit rates would be fierce, and it might well come to pass that neither canal was very profitable.
The biggest question, however, is strategic. The United States built the Panama Canal and ran it for many years. Twothirds of the cargo that goes through the Canal comes from or is going to US ports, and American warships still have the right to jump the queue of ships waiting to go through. As a country with coasts on both the Atlantic and the Pacific, the United States sees control of the fastest way between the two oceans as a high strategic priority. Despite the hand-over of the existing canal to the Panamanian government in 1999, at the moment the US still has that control. It would have far less control over a Nicaraguan canal, and will doubtless do its best to derail the project. That’s an inevitable strategic reflex, but it is not necessarily the case that a Nicaraguan canal would really lessen the US Navy’s strategic dominance in the region. Nothing is more vulnerable than a canal in wartime, and even in confrontations where force is not yet being used canals are easily blockaded. And although the Chinese navy no doubt enthusiastically backs the Nicaraguan project, it’s hard to see what real strategic advantage it would gain. The new canal is certainly feasible from an engineering point of view. It may be viable economically, depending on cost factors that have not yet been calculated and on the rate of expansion of world trade. But its fate will probably be decided by the Chinese government’s willingness to back what is, for China, a vanity project. And that, in turn, will depend on whether China’s economy remains strong enough to afford such an indulgence. At the moment, I wouldn’t bet on it.

fears of road and bridge washouts. There were three remarkable storms that month. The first, a thunderstorm on June 8, saw lightning strike the MacKay residence in Slaterville, entering the house via the telephone wires. It tore down pictures, took a corner off the piano and flattened a partition next to the dining room where the family was seated. No one was injured. Mr. Leek’s house next door was also struck, throwing him from the lounge upon which he was sitting and setting it ablaze. He escaped unscathed. The second storm on June 19 was much worse. Rain flooded a number of businesses in the lower part of town. Several smaller houses were uprooted by winds of up to 100 mph, small buildings overturned, trees downed and chimneys destroyed. The Powell cleaning shop roof was ripped away as was a section of the Cosmopolitan Hotel roof. Windows from the Wentworth Hotel fell into the street. No one was injured. A severe thunderstorm the following month centred on 9th Avenue including a lightning strike that blew through the second-story roof of the Niblock & Barker store, passed to the ground floor and tore a large hole near the front door upon exiting, barely missing Mrs. Niblock and her young son. Local barber Kilby was struck at the back door of his shop. Though dazed for several minutes he was otherwise unhurt. The ensuing summer turned hot and dry bringing both fears of forest fires and warm, sunny days — the same sun that is now setting on the fifth season of Janus, by the way. A sincere thank you to Karen, Barry and the staff of the Daily Townsman, to Cheryl and Brian and the staff and volunteers of the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and the Cranbrook Archives, to all those who have shared photos, writings, memories and knowledge and thank you, of course, to the Janus readers. Minor lacrosse season ends with home tournament TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
The Cranbrook Minor Lacrosse Association is wrapping up their season with the Chris Watson Memorial Tournament at the Memorial Arena and Western Financial Place this weekend. Lacrosse action will take over both facilities as 16 teams over varying age divisions f r o m around B.C. and Alberta go head to head. Games begin at 11 a.m on Friday in both facilities, running right through on Saturday, and wrapping up with playoffs on Sunday. There will be a break in the event on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, as all teams gather on the floor at Western Financial Place for a ceremony
honouring Chris Watson. “We do a little ceremony, we award the Chris Watson Fair Play award,” said Outlaws president Tammy Tait. “Each team selects someone who shows all the good attributes of a good sportsman.” After the ceremony, kids will put their individual skills to the test in a trick stick competition before getting back into games. The Outlaws are also hosting a public pancake breakfast by donation on Saturday morning from 7-10 a.m. at the upstairs viewing area in the Memorial Arena. There are plenty of spoils up for grabs in raffle prizes, with some gift baskets exceeding $700 in value and a chance to win an iPad mini.
Ice alum joins Red Deer Rebels TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
A Kootenay Ice alumni has joined the Red Deer Rebels’ staff, as the club announced on Wednesday that Taylor Dakers will serve as the goaltending coach.
Taylor Dakers Dakers has recently served in the same capacity with the Everett Silvertips and works full time with World Pro Goaltending in Calgary. Dakers played four seasons with the Kootenay Ice from 2003-2007 and was a fifth round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL Draft. “I’m very excited to be part of the Red Deer Rebels’ organization,” said Dakers. “There is a
very strong tradition of producing great teams and great players. Being able to work alongside professionals like Brent Sutter, Jeff Truitt and Steve O’Rourke is an honour and I look forward to helping develop the best players we possibly can.” Dakers will work with the Rebels roster goaltenders as well as prospects on the protected list and assist scouting staff in the evaluation of talent for the WHL bantam draft. “We’re very pleased to add Taylor to our coaching staff,” said Rebels president Brent Sutter. “Taylor has coached goaltenders and he brings that coaching experience. Also, we were looking for someone that had played at a high level, he’s played in our league and professionally, so he brings that knowledge of the position too. We look forward to adding him to our coaching staff.”

Ice hire new assistant coach TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
The Kootenay Ice raided Sherwood Park for the second time on Thursday, hiring Jay Henderson to serve as an assistant to head coach Ryan McGill. Henderson, who hails from the same city as his boss, has signed a two-year contract and is eager to get to work with the club. “It didn’t take a lot of deliberating,” Henderson said. “Me and my wife talked it over and it’s a heck of an opportunity for myself and my family, so I’m excited about it.” Henderson, like his predecessor Chad Kletzel, has ties to the Kootenay franchise, suiting up for the Edmonton Ice from 1996-1998, when McGill was coaching his first tenure. Following his four-
year career in major-junior hockey, Henderson graduated to the AHL, winning three Calder Cup titles, each with a different team. While playing pro, Henderson and McGill reunited in the AHL when the Ice head coach moved up to lead the bench of the Hartford Wolf Pack after winning the Memorial Cup in 2002. “It’s nice having that familiarity with both Jeff and Ryan and being somewhat of an alumni way back in the day before moving to Cranbrook,” continued Henderson. “I’ve been following them all along, even when I was playing pro, keeping tabs, and they’ve been fairly successful, so to me, it’s a great opportunity to join an organization like that.” Henderson was
picked in the ninth round of the 1997 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins and and enjoyed a six-year career in the AHL before moving over to professional leagues in Germany, Austria and England.
He also got a taste of the show, playing in 33 games with the Bruins over three years. He was the captain for Boston’s farm team in 2004/05 and was nominated as the Man of the Year by his team three times over his AHL career, which rec-
ognizes community service. After retiring, he stepped into coaching and has been an assistant coach with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks, where he helped mentor Ice graduate Steele Boomer for a season. During his tenure with NAIT, Henderson also worked with Hockey Alberta as a head coach for the Alberta Cup and as an instructor with Team Pacific. Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth said he and McGill were impressed at a few things on Henderson’s resume. “Jay’s a former player, he did play professional hockey, he won three Calder Cup championships, he’s been a leader throughout his career, and he’s been involved in the
coaching business the last couple of years giving back to the game,” Chynoweth said. “I think, from our end, he fit the criteria.” Chynoweth remembers Henderson as an exciting player who would bring people out of their seats when he skated with the Ice, and adds that his enthusiasm will build a rapport with the players. McGill said he noticed the same thing during the interview process. “One of the biggest things, is he’s got the personality that the kids will really, really enjoy him,” said McGill. Henderson, 34, and his wife, Megan, are parents to two young children; daughter Mila (5) and son Seamus (3).
Canadian makes history at NBA draft LORI E WING Canadian Press
Anthony Bennett made Canadian basketball history Thursday, becoming the first player from north of the border to be selected first overall in the NBA draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers stunned the league by selecting the UNLV freshman forward, who has starred for Canada’s junior national team and was the Mountain West Conference player of the year. “I’m just as surprised as everybody else,” Bennett said moments after he strode across the stage in his scarlet and grey suit UNLV colours. “I didn’t really have any idea who’s going No. 1 or who was going No. 2. I heard everything was up for grabs. But I’m just real happy, glad that I have this opportunity, and I just got to thank God for everything.” Tristan Thompson of Brampton was selected No. 4 by the Cavaliers in the 2011 draft, making him the highest Canadian draft pick before Thursday. Teen
phenom Andrew Wiggins of Thornhill, Ont., who’ll play for Kansas next season, is projected to go first overall in the 2014 draft. “Yeah. It’s just crazy. Made history. I can’t really complain about that,” said Bennett, who had between 25 and 30 family members with him in New York - he lost count. “It’s just like a long time dream that I had since I first started playing basketball, even though it was six or seven years ago. It’s just crazy. Next year with Wiggins, hopefully he does well at Kansas. I’m rooting for him. I’m pretty sure he’ll get that No. 1 spot.” Steve Nash of Victoria held the previous Canadian record, going 15th overall to the Phoenix Suns in 1996. The Los Angeles Lakers star, who’s also the general manager of Canada’s men’s team, retweeted the NBA’s announcement adding: “Proud on Proud!” Prime Minister Stephen Harper posted on Twitter “Congrats to @ AnthonyBennett for being the first Cdn ever drafted #1 overall in the
NBA draft. Good luck in Cleveland, we’re all behind you.” There was suspense right until the end, either because the Cavs were unsure who they wanted or were trying to trade the pick. Most predictions had them taking one of the big men Nerlens Noel and Alex Len. Orlando passed on both of them, too, going with Indiana swingman Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick. Washington took Otto Porter Jr. of
Georgetown with the third pick. Bennett has been sidelined since having rotator cuff surgery in May, and didn’t participate in the draft combine or any pre-draft workouts. The 20-yearold clearly impressed in his interviews - he interviewed for the top five teams in the draft and his play in college last season. Bennett had surgery a few weeks after the Runnin’ Rebels were upset in the second
round of March Madness in a 64-61 loss to California, but said Wednesday he wasn’t concerned the injury would hurt his chances in the draft. He was bang on. Ten years after the Cavaliers selected LeBron James to start a draft that would include his future NBA championship teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in the top five, this one lacked the star power and perhaps the promise of stardom.
Olynyk ends up in Boston JIMMY GOLEN Associated Press
BOSTON - The names that Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge didn’t mention said all anyone needed to know about how he views the team’s future. After trading up three spots to get Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk in the NBA draft on Thursday night, Ainge described him as a complementary player who will fit in well with Rajon Rondo, Avery Johnson
and Jeff Green. No mention of the team’s biggest stars, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. “Can’t talk about it,” Ainge said when the omission was pointed out to him. But asked if there were any untradeable players on the roster, he said, “If Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were traded, I guess everybody’s tradable.” According to a person with knowledge of the talks, the Celtics and
Nets were nearing completion of a deal that would send Garnett and Pierce to Brooklyn along with Jason Terry in exchange for a package that included three firstround draft picks and three players. The Celtics would get Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia and the expiring contract of Kris Humphries, according to the person, who confirmed the talks to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private.

Djokovic, Williams advance at Wimbledon; more injury exits Howard Fendrich Associated Press
LONDON - What a stark statistic for the nation of Bill Tilden and Don Budge, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi: It’s been 101 years since no men from the United States reached Wimbledon’s third round. And the last time it happened, way back in 1912, no Americans even entered the oldest Grand Slam tournament. By the end of Thursday, all 11 U.S. men in the 2013 field at the All England Club were gone, with top-seeded Novak Djokovic accounting for the last one by beating 156th-ranked qualifier Bobby Reynolds 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-1. Earlier in the day, former top-five player James Blake lost to Bernard Tomic of Australia 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, while qualifier Denis Kudla was beaten by Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-5. That trio joined 18th-seeded John Isner, 21st-seeded Sam Quer-
rey, Ryan Harrison, Steve Johnson, Alex Kuznetsov, Wayne Odesnik, Rajeev Ram and Michael Russell on the way home. “It’s a tough stat to hear, but I still believe, right now, where U.S. tennis is, not too many guys are in their prime. That’s why the numbers are like that. But a lot of guys are, maybe, in the tail end of their careers and a lot of guys are coming up,” said Kudla, a 20-year-old from Arlington, Va., who is ranked 105th. “Maybe next year, or the year after that, things could change. You have to go through a little bit of a struggle to get some success.” Led by top-seeded and defending champion Serena Williams, the U.S. women still are represented in singles at Wimbledon this year. Williams extended her winning streak to 33 matches, the longest on tour since 2000, by eliminating 100th-ranked qualifier Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-2, while 18-year-old Madi-
son Keys knocked off 30th-seeded Mona Barthel of Germany 6-4, 6-2. Keys next plays 2012 runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, and Williams goes from a 19-year-old opponent in Garcia to a 42-yearold opponent in Kimiko Date-Krumm, the oldest woman to reach the third round at Wimbledon since the Open era began in 1968. “I have so much respect for her. I think she’s so inspiring to be playing such high-level tennis at her age,” said

NEW YORK - Joe Sakic has given Nathan MacKinnon another endorsement to be the first pick in the NHL draft, though the Colorado Avalanche are still listening to trade offers. Speaking after the board of governors meeting, Colorado’s executive vice president of hockey operations explained why the team preferred MacKinnon to defenceman Seth Jones, who has ties to Denver. “We believe Seth, he’s going to be a good player, as well, a very good defenceman in this league,” Sakic said. “When you’re picking No. 1, you want to be able to pick what you believe is going to be the best player in the draft. That was why we made that decision.” Sakic and head coach/vice president of hockey operations Patrick Roy have repeatedly singled out MacKinnon as their choice at No. 1. Sakic originally told the

Denver Post that the Avalanche would pass on Jones in favour of a forward, either MacKinnon, Halifax teammate Jonathan Drouin or Finnish centre Aleksander Barkov. Sakic called this a “deep draft” but said the Avalanche have targeted the player they’re taking. He was then asked about MacKinnon. “I think when you watch Nathan play, he’s definitely a skilled guy but he’s a powerful skater,” Sakic said. “He can play a skill game, but he loves going to the net. He loves going to the hard areas, and he’s just a tremendous player.” The Avalanche front office being so up-front with the stance of MacKinnon over Jones has raised skepticism about possibly trying to drum up a trade. The Florida Panthers pick second and the Tampa Bay Lightning third. Sakic wouldn’t say how Colorado’s approach is affecting trade talks, if at all.

for a full tournament, set in 2008. “It was a bit strange to see so many top players either lost or retired,” Djokovic said. “But grass is a very special surface. It requires a different kind of movement. ... If grass at the start of Wimbledon is still not so used and, I guess, a little bit slippery, it can be dangerous, until you really get your right footing on the court. That’s probably the reason why they all felt uncomfortable and they all injured themselves, unfortunately.”

form Thursday. Only one seeded man departed: No. 17 Milos Raonic of Canada, who was beaten 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (4) by 64th-ranked Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands. There were, however, two more injury-related exits, raising the total of players pulling out of the second round to nine, which equals the Open era Grand Slam record for any round. All told, 12 players have withdrawn before a match or stopped during one, one short of the Wimbledon record
doing better than the men,” Reynolds said. He wound up facing Djokovic with Centre Court’s retractable roof closed because of the first drizzles of the fortnight, which prevented five singles matches from starting and forced the suspensions of three others in progress. ICBC asking drivers and parents to help keep kids safe this summer
No more pencils, no more books… school’s out for summer! It’s an exciting time for kids and many are looking forward to spending more time outdoors, so we’re asking drivers and parents to help keep kids safe on our roads during the summer months.

Watch for clues: In residential areas, a hockey net or ball can mean that kids are playing nearby. Remember that a child could dash into the street at any moment. Pay attention and always anticipate the unexpected.
Focus on the basics: Kids will digest information about serious issues when it’s kept simple and relevant. Therefore, begin your pedestrian safety lessons with the key basics that you learned as a kid, which are still relevant today. A great example is how to cross at intersections:
Here are ICBC’s pedestrian safety tips for parents to share with their children:

THINK
Stop: Before crossing, always stop at the curb. Make sure all vehicles have stopped. Look: Look left and right for oncoming vehicles. Then look again over your shoulders for vehicles that might be turning. Teach your kids to keep looking for approaching vehicles as they cross. Listen: Listen for approaching traffic that you can’t yet see. Make eye contact: Even if the walk signal is on, teach your children to make eye contact with drivers before they cross.
Walk: Teach your kids to walk, never run, when crossing a road. Mark out safe areas: Focus on teaching your kids where to safely position themselves when they are around roads. Children should always walk on the inside edge of a sidewalk where they are less exposed to traffic. If there isn’t a sidewalk, teach your kids to walk facing oncoming traffic so they can see approaching vehicles and make eye contact with drivers. Children should avoid shortcuts through parking lots where drivers can often be distracted by more complex maneuvers. ICBC provides free road safety materials to schools across B.C. The materials are unique to each grade level and encourage road safety with fun and interactive activities. The company has acknowledged that pollution from that smelter travelled down the Columbia River into Lake Roosevelt between 1896 and 1995. But it has said that as a company operating in Canada, it is not subject to U.S. environmental laws and cannot be ordered to pay for cleanup. Much of the pollution is a fine black sand known as slag that washed downstream onto beaches at the lake where people camp and swim. The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency a decade ago to assess contamination in the reservoir. In 2003, the EPA decided Teck was subject to the U.S. Superfund law, demanded the company pay for studies to determine the extent of the pollution, and clean it up. Teck objected and the tribes sued in 2004 to force the company to comply. The state then joined the case. However, Teck did agree in 2006 to perform a major study of pollution in the lake, under the direction of the EPA. The company has spent more than $55 million on the study, scheduled for completion in 2015.

ments at 10 lakes and wetlands. The studies confirmed elevated levels of metals and also concluded the metals came mostly from past smelter emissions in Trail, Ecology said. People living or recreating in the Northport area should take some extra precautions, such as washing toys and clothing after playing on soil; washing hands and face after working or playing outside; and mopping, dusting and vacuuming often, Ecology said. Efforts to clean up Lake Roosevelt from smelter pollution have been in the works for years. A federal judge last year ruled that his court has jurisdiction to apply the U.S. Superfund law to the Canadian company that acknowledges polluting Lake Roosevelt. U.S. District Judge Lonny Suko, of Yakima, ruled against Teck Metals Ltd., of Vancouver, British Columbia, in a long-running case involving pollution of the lake in northeastern Washington. Cleanup has been estimated to cost up to $1 billion. Teck Metals operates the giant lead and zinc smelter in Trail, about 10 miles from the U.S. border.

SPOKANE, Wash. — State regulators have released two studies that confirm heavy metals pollution along undeveloped regions of Lake Roosevelt near the Canadian border. The studies released this week by the Washington Department of Ecology found elevated levels of heavy metals in surface soils, wetlands and lake sediments in undeveloped areas near the town of Northport. The metals originated from past operations of a huge smelter near the border in Trail, British Columbia. “What’s significant is we have far more information than before on metals in undeveloped, forested land,’’ said Brook Beeler, a spokeswoman for Ecology in Spokane, on Thursday. Lake Roosevelt is the 150-mile reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam. One study evaluated surface soils in timberland within two miles of the U.S.-Canadian border in the fall of 2012. More than 120 soil samples were tested for various metals, including lead, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, mercury and others. The second study looked at metals concentrations in sedi-

For Better or Worse
You are capable of squeezing a lot into a small amount of time. You might feel pressured to get out of town. Honor what needs to happen within your inner circle of friends. You often push beyond what most people can and will tolerate. Tonight: Get going to your destination. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your manifested ideas could leave many people in awe, yet they also might get you into a lot of trouble. A partner could be unusually difficult. Understand what this person expects, but also recognize that he or she might be exhausted and emotional. Tonight: Togetherness works. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might not be as in control as you think you are. You often delude yourself, which causes problems for those involved. Take off you rose-colored shades if you want better results. If more than one person says the same thing, you need to listen. Tonight: Happy at home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Speak your mind, and know full well what you want. You are
more sensitive and together than you might have realized. At present, there is an issue regarding who wants to take the lead in a project. This conversation could become heated. Tonight: TGIF. Meet friends. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might wonder what has triggered a child or new friend. Realize that this person is on the warpath. Even if his or her anger is directed at you, do not take it on -- it might be the result of a different situation. Give this individual some space. Tonight: Follow the music. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) How and why you seem to be irritating a family member might be a mystery to you, as this person goes off in a fit of rage. When he or she has calmed down, consider initiating a conversation. A loved one feels cared by you. Tonight: Lead the gang into Friday-night rituals. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I’ve been trying to write a novel for a year. The problem is, I have no support from my family. My wife and friends always groan when I ask them to read what I’ve written. I’m trying to be considerate of their level of interest and don’t want them to be annoyed with me, but I need some feedback on my writing. That being said, would you know where I could send my pages for review? I’d like to know if my story is interesting the way I’m writing it, or if I need to develop it better. -Amateur Author in El Paso, Texas Dear Author: There are various ways to get your written material in front of an audience. You can ask writing teachers to look at it. You can search for a writers workshop or try meetup.com for a writing group that critiques members’ work. You can self-publish (you are responsible for all costs), put it in a blog or on an Internet site for free (you will get myriad comments, many worthless, and you’d better have a thick skin), enter a writing contest, or submit a short version to a magazine. You also can go to the nearest library and find a listing of literary agents. An agent will help get your book into the hands of a reputable publisher or reviewer. Getting published is not easy, but if you have talent and skill, it is possible. Dear Annie: Our daughter was asked to be the maid of honor at her friend’s wedding. She was very excited about it. We planned a small shower for her closest friends and family. Now the bride and her mother have given us a list of 78 women to invite. I checked the etiquette book and found no encouragement for such a large event. The 78 women are also invited to the wedding reception. We simply cannot afford such a large shower, and the bride’s parents know it. I do not understand how they could expect us to handle such a large event. Our daughter doesn’t want to lose the bride’s friendship. Should she bow out of the wedding? -- Anxious Parent Dear Anxious: No bride should demand such extravagant favors. Your daughter should tell her that she cannot manage such a large affair and ask that the guest list be trimmed to 30 women or however many she can afford to host. Your daughter could also ask the other bridesmaids to host this shower with her, providing more resources and perhaps accommodating a larger guest list. If the other bridesmaids are not interested or if the bride insists on 78 women, your daughter should offer to bow out of the wedding party. We hope the bride will then understand how unreasonable she is being and back off. Dear Annie: Your answer to “Parents at Wits’ End,” whose bipolar son would not take his meds, exemplifies the dilemma posed by mental illness in this country, namely that without the patient’s cooperation matters may quickly grow hopeless. My wife had severe bipolar disorder. It was only luck that kept her aggressive driving from killing all of us and enabled her to keep her job. A friend urged me to leave with my children, but I knew my kids would be devastated, and I worried that my wife would kill herself. My wife saw a doctor who prescribed an antidepressant, but she did not want a mood stabilizer. The antidepressant by itself sent her spiraling, as she knew it would. The doctor’s nurse later told me, “We knew something was wrong, but she wouldn’t talk about it when she came in.” Less than a year later, my wife committed suicide, breaking all of our hearts. If a bipolar person cannot cooperate, the family can do nothing but pray. -- Wiser in Tennessee Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. ots of people claim to follow Jesus, and then they do stuff like what is on this list. Sure, we do these things all the time, because we’re fallible human beings. The point is that you can’t deliberately do these things if you claim to follow Jesus’ example. Also, let me be clear that this is not a complete list, but it’s not a bad place to start. 10) Exclude people because they practice another religion. Jesus was constantly including people, and he did it with a radical disregard for their religion. Jesus spoke with and broke bread with everyone, no questions asked. In fact, he was accused of being a glutton and of breaking the law because of his practice. 9) Exclude people for what they look like, how they were born, or things beyond their control. I may have mentioned this already but Jesus was constantly including people. Jesus had this rebel streak in him that actually sought out folks who didn’t “fit in.” People who were different, people who were marginalized, people whom others excluded, people who were made to feel unwanted in one way or another held a special place in the heart, life and actions of Jesus. I suspect he did it because he understood they weren’t actually different at all. They were precious human beings. 8) Withhold caring from people. Did you ever play the game “Follow the Leader?” If you don’t do what the leader does, you are out. Following means you should imitate as closely as possible. When people who were sick needed care, Jesus gave it to them. If we are following Jesus, we will imitate him as closely as possible. We will take care of everyone. Everyone. 7) Exclude people. Last time. I promise. Jesus was constantly including people. It’s a little concept called love. He was pretty big on it. 6) Let people go hungry. When Jesus said “Feed my sheep,” he wasn’t talking about just

spiritual feeding. If Gandhi was right (and I suspect he was), you can’t have one without the other: “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.” There isn’t a food shortage in the world. There is enough for everyone. There isn’t a problem with a distribution system capable of handling it; I can eat lobster from Nova Scotia while looking at the Rockies. The problem is that we aren’t very good at sharing. 5) Make money more important than God and God’s people. The love of money really is the root of all sorts of evil. We make choices about what we will do with our money every day. Our choices speak louder than our words. Willingly or not, our choices frequently hurt the least of these and others rather than help them. Sometimes, we even hurt ourselves. Because money is so important, we will shop at stores because their prices are cheaper even though we know their products are made in sweat shapes and endanger the lives of those who make them. We buy mass–produced food because it’s cheaper than buying from the farmer down the road. We’d rather keep more of our money than pay the taxes it takes to provide for those in need. We have a money problem. 4) Judge others. “That ‘speck of sawdust in your brother’s
eye’ and ‘let the one who is without sin cast the first stone’ stuff? I meant it. Signed, Jesus.” 3) Be physically aggressive or violent. Jesus’ message and life showed us that we are to avoid violent behavior. “Put your sword away, (insert your name here).” Use non–violent ways to seek justice. Be creative in your protests. See how Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi did this, to name just a couple of folks who got it. 2) Use the church to hurt people. If there was anything that could tick Jesus off, it was when institutions used their power and practice to hurt or exclude people. Notice, for example, the incident of the money changers in the Temple. It was supposed to be a place of love and worship. So while it is true that Jesus became physically aggressive there (throwing over the tables and booths), it’s important to note that even then, he didn’t attack people. Just threw some stuff around. 1) Hate. The one possible exception might be “hate” itself but even then hate breeds hate — so it’s best to avoid hating altogether. I have to admit I have problem tolerating people who are intolerant. But I am learning in my journey not to do it. It’s a process of growing in love. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Gay marriage ruling squeezes GOP leaders Hard line will continue between party’s base and crucial centrist voters for provincial workers bc budget
Charles Babington Associated Press
Tom Fle tcher Black Press
VICTORIA – Government revenues have fallen $900 million short of February’s budget projections, and teachers and other government workers can expect no new money for wages, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Thursday. Bright spots for the B.C. economy include an expected recovery in natural gas prices from historic lows, and $500 million in savings on government operations, de Jong said in a postelection budget update. B.C. is continuing an effective freeze on public sector wage growth that began in 2010. Since the government’s “cooperative gains” mandate in 2012, nearly three quarters of union members have signed contracts with average pay increases of one to two per cent, financed through savings in other areas of operations. Most are two-year deals, with some halfway through. The projected surplus for this year is trimmed from $197 million in February to $153 million, and de Jong had to trim contingency funds to reach that. Tax hikes are unchanged from February, including a two-year increase for personal income over $150,000 and a tobacco tax increase set for October. The budget calls for $30 million in spending cuts this year, after last year’s reduction of $20 million in all ministries except health. The government’s “core review” of government opera-
tions is getting underway with a target of another $50 million in savings by the end of 2014, but no program targets are identified in the budget update. The price for natural gas, the key commodity for the government’s debt reduction plan, is forecast to rise from $2.25 per gigajoule this year to $2.51 and $2.89 in the next two years. Exports of liquefied natural gas to Asia, where prices are currently far higher, can’t begin until well after 2015. Lumber prices are forecast to decline, from a peak of US $348 per 1,000 board feet this year to $308 in 2014 and $300 in 2015. De Jong said the government’s asset sales plan is about $8 million ahead of projections, with about half of the properties, bonds and other financial holdings sold or in negotiations to sell. The goal is to raise $475 million for next year’s budget. Properties already sold include land on Tranquille Road in Kamloops, a school board office in Kelowna, surplus school land in Delta, vacant lots in Burnaby, Surrey and near Victoria General Hospital and former school sites in Surrey and North Vancouver. Properties going on the market include a former school board office in Surrey, a vacant site north of Kelowna once planned for a provincial prison, former school sites in Central Saanich, Sidney and north central Vancouver Island and land for LNG development in Kitimat.

WASHINGTON — The dramatic Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage is forcing Republican leaders to cope, in bright daylight, with something they’d rather handle discreetly: the careful balance between placating their conservative base and reaching out to centrist voters crucial in presidential elections. Top GOP leaders showed notable restraint this week, while conservative activists fulminated against the court’s decision, which requires the federal government to recognize same-sex marriage. It’s a delicate political dance that establishment Republicans perform whenever divisive social issues gain new prominence. Republicans are unified and confident in their anti-tax, small-government principles. But nonfinancial issues cause more problems. Republicans are struggling to keep pace with rapidly increasing public acceptance of gay rights. They’re also embroiled in intraparty debates over illegal immigration. And a third sensitive issue charged back into prominence this month when House Republicans voted to sharply restrict abortion rights. A similar bill triggered a midnight standoff this week in the Texas legislature. All these issues pose major challenges to Republican leaders in Washington if not elsewhere. Conservative activists, who form the party’s backbone, care passionately about these matters, and they will give Republican candidates only so much leeway before rebelling. Many House Republicans, in particular, cater to such voters, hoping to avoid a GOP primary challenge from the right. But up-for-grabs centrist voters hold more moderate views on these issues. Their drift towards Democrats in recent years is a key reason why Republicans lost the popular vote in five of the last six presi-
dential elections. The high court’s rejection of the Defence of Marriage Act already is stirring new debates over gay rights in the states, with unpredictable effects on state and federal elections. Thirty-seven states still bar same-sex marriage, including presidential battlegrounds Ohio, Florida and Virginia. If activists try to legalize gay marriage in these states, it might fire up conservatives and help GOP candidates in next year’s midterm elections. But it also might drive a further wedge between Republican presidential hopefuls and unaligned voters in 2016 and beyond. “In less than a decade, opposition to gay marriage has transformed from a marginal political winner for Republicans to a liability with swing voters,’’ said GOP consultant John Ullyot. National Republican leaders carefully calibrated their responses this week to the Supreme Court’s ruling. House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement: “While I am obviously disappointed in the ruling, it is always critical that we protect our system of checks
and balances.’’ He said he hopes states “will define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.’’ Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued no statement at all. His aides, when asked, said McConnell “supports traditional marriage.’’ Boehner said he has no plans to deal with a proposed constitutional ban on samesex marriage, and it would have no chance anyway in the Senate. The Democratic National Committee chortled that “some Republican leaders are conspicuously missing in action.’’ The GOP’s most conservative lawmakers, meanwhile, blasted away. “Marriage was debased today,’’ said Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California. Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana said it was “a sad day when the same court that upheld Obamacare decides to reverse course on thousands of years of tradition and a strong bipartisan coalition in Congress.’’ After Mitt Romney’s loss to Obama last fall, establishment
Republicans underwent weeks of soul-searching and selfscrutiny. A party-commissioned report said Republicans must embrace “comprehensive immigration reform’’ to improve their damaged relationship with Hispanic voters. That’s generally interpreted as including a pathway to citizenship for millions living here illegally. Many House Republicans reject the advice. “The biggest mistake we can make as a party is to pander to the Hispanic community,’’ said Rep. Raul Labrador, RIdaho. The top priority is to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, he said, adding: “the American people are with the Republicans on this.’’ Such discussions unsettle Republican presidential campaign strategists. Blatantly catering to centrist voters in 2016 could antagonize loyal conservatives who have funded and supported the party for years. But standing pat on immigration, gay marriage and other issues could perpetuate, or worsen, the political dynamics that lifted Obama to consecutive wins.
NASA poised to launch new two-year mission to sun Associated Press
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — NASA on Thursday was poised to launch a satellite to observe a little-understood region just above the surface of the sun. Unlike a traditional liftoff, the Iris satellite was to cruise into Earth orbit on a Pegasus rocket dropped from an airplane after taking off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on California’s central coast. The launch was to scheduled to occur at approximately 7:27 p.m. About 100 miles (160 kilometres) off the coast and at
an altitude of 39,000 feet (11,880 metres), the rocket was to be released and ignite its engine for the climb to space. If all goes as planned, Iris will be boosted into orbit 400 miles (640 kilometres) above the Earth, unfurl its solar panels and begin its two-year mission after a checkout period. Previous sun-observing spacecraft have yielded a wealth of information about our nearest star and beamed back brilliant pictures of solar flares. Iris carries an ultraviolet telescope that can take highresolution images every few
seconds. Its focus is on a littleexplored region of the sun that lies between the surface and the corona, the glowing white ring that’s visible during eclipses. The goal is to learn more about how this mysterious region drives solar wind and to better predict space weather that can disrupt communications signals on Earth. The mission is cheap by NASA standards, costing only $182 million, and is managed by the space agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Once in orbit, engineers will spend a month making sure Iris
is in perfect health before powering on the telescope to begin observations. The launch was delayed by a day so that technicians at the Air Force base could restore power to launch range equipment after a weekend outage cut electricity to a swath of the central coast. The Pegasus, from Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Virginia, is a winged rocket designed for launching small satellites. First flown in 1990, Pegasus rockets have also been used to accelerate vehicles in hypersonic flight programs.

Calgary mayor blasts CP Rail over bridge failure Bill Gr avel and and L auren Krugel Canadian Press
CALGARY — Calgary’s mayor says he has a lot of serious questions for Canadian Pacific after a bridge across the swollen Bow River failed and train cars carrying oil products derailed. Naheed Nenshi says he has concerns about the timing of the bridge inspection in relation to the recent flood and the fact railways are exempt from municipal regulations. Railways are under federal jurisdiction and are responsible for their own inspections. “Certainly once this crisis is over, I’ll be looking for a lot of answers from a lot of people,’’ he said Thursday at an update on the bridge collapse. “When was that bridge inspected? Why was it not inspected after Saturday? Remember, on Saturday the Bow River was still running higher than anyone had ever seen in their lifetimes,’’ Nenshi said. CP issued a statement Thursday that said
the bridge had been inspected on Saturday and the tracks on Monday. “I’ll be very blunt. I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this. We’ve seen a lot of people lose their jobs at CP over the last year. How many bridge inspectors did they fire?’’ Nenshi said railways are private companies and it’s been a point of contention for municipalities who are powerless to regulate them. “I will tell you that this has been a constant frustration for every municipal politician in this country forever.’’ The mayor said the bridge in question is old and was not built into the bedrock — “something I didn’t know until today’’ — whereas all the city’s bridges are. He said all the municipal bridges had been inspected three times since the flood and were solid. Five railcars filled with an oil product derailed Thursday when the bridge collapsed beneath a freight train as it was crossing the Bow. As Nenshi spoke, emergency crews were
undertaking a delicate operation to secure the derailed cars and empty them before they fell into the water. Acting Calgary fire chief Ken Uzeloc said crews were planning to string a cable through the railcars and secure it to bulldozers on land so that, if the bridge gave way, the cars wouldn’t be carried down the river. He said workers were hoping to use a bucket truck for that operation so no one would have to go on the bridge. Crews then hoped to pull another train along a parallel bridge so the cargo could be pumped off and the empty cars safely removed. Emergency management director Bruce Burrell said the cars were not leaking, but booms were being placed down river in case of any spills. CP said the five cars were carrying a product used to dilute raw oilsands bitumen. The rules state that the railway is responsible for the condition of its bridges and to ensure
Astronaut gets rare national honour C anadian Press
LONGUEUIL, Que. — Just days before his retirement, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has received a one-of-akind national honour for his accomplishments during his memorable final space mission. A Meritorious Service Medal was pinned on Hadfield by Gov. Gen. David Johnston during a presentation Thursday at the Canadian Space Agency. The space veteran was awarded the civilian version of the Meritorious Service Cross, becoming the first Canadian to hold both the civilian and military decorations of the award. Johnston said the civilian version is awarded to Canadians who have performed an exceptional deed over a limited period of time which has brought great honour to the country. Hadfield spent five months on the International Space Station and became the first Cana-

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield receives the Meritorious Service Cross from Governor General David Johnston on June 27, 2013 in St-Hubert, Que. dian to command the giant orbiting space lab during his stay. He also became known worldwide for his tweets, breath-taking photos of Earth and his videos from space aimed at entertaining and educating. The three-time space visitor ended up with more than one million followers on Twitter, after starting out with 20,000 when he blasted
off for the space station in mid-December. “You have managed to reach out, not only to space aficionados, but also people who had lost interest in the lure of space, as well as children with vast imaginations,’’ Johnston said during the medal presentation. The Governor General also recalled that during his mission, Hadfield tweeted with
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, otherwise known as Capt. Kirk and Spock of Star Trek fame. Johnston noted that even astronaut Buzz Aldrin got in on the Twitter fun. Aldrin followed Neil Armstrong, the first American astronaut to walk on the lunar surface, in July 1969. “Indeed, the only thing I can say to that is: live long and prosper,’’
Johnston added. The Governor General praised Hadfield’s use of communications technologies, which he described as truly innovative. But Johnston said it was especially Hadfield’s passion and personality that made the astronaut’s outreach an enormous success. The 53-year-old astronaut, who is retiring on July 3, called it a great honour to receive the medal. “This medal on my chest, this cross on my chest, is also just a symbol, it is a moment in time today here together,’’ Hadfield said. “But this is a symbol of the recognition for the work that we did.’’ Hadfield noted that there were people at the space agency who have toiled “for years and years to make it possible to accomplish what we accomplished over the last several months, over the last half-year in orbit.’’
that corrective action is taken if problems are found. Railway companies are required to use a technically competent railway bridge engineer to conduct inspections, and that person should have the authority to restrict traffic over a bridge if there are concerns about its condition. The rules say each railway’s inspection
program should include procedures to deal with any bridge “that might have been damaged by natural or accidental event, including but not limited to flood, fire, ice flows, debris flows.’’ Railway companies are required to do their own safety audits and maintain their own safety records, which can be requested by Transport Canada.
Man convicted of human trafficking in nanny case C ANADIAN PRESS
VANCOUVER — A B.C. Supreme Court jury has convicted a Vancouver man of human trafficking in the case of a Filipino nanny. Franco Yiu Kwan Orr and Oi Ling Nicole Huen were each charged after Leticia Sarmiento called police following an altercation at the couple’s home in 2010. Sarmiento had looked after the couple’s children as a live-in nanny since 2008. The jury has acquitted Huen of the charge. Orr is expected to return to court July 10 to set a sentencing hearing. During trial, Sarmiento described the day she called police after one of her employers pushed her and doused her with a jug of water before she escaped from the home. Sarmiento arrived in Canada in 2008 with Huen and Orr and their children after working for them in Hong Kong as a live-in caregiver. It was only after police took her to a women’s shelter that she discovered she’d been living in Canada illegally. Sarmiento testified that once in Canada, she was forced to work 16-hour days, seven days a week and also clean the house. During the preliminary inquiry, Sarmiento said doors at the house were always locked from the inside and required a key to be opened.
