team was activated and Cranbrook Search and Rescue were notified and attended. A search of the immediate area by a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) device, (looking for heat sources), was also conducted but the vehicle or driver were not located. It was determined that the missing 20 year old male driver was last seen on Sunday June 23rd at 11:30 p.m. when he left a group of friends in the Bull River area. The search resumed at first light on Wednesday, June 26th . Search

and Rescue teams from Kimberley; Cranbrook; Sparwood; Fernie and Nelson arrived with specialists in swift water rescue; rope rescue; and ground search and rescue and two helicopters. Search and Rescue personnel joined with a large number of volunteers who were organized into search teams and participated in the search efforts however by the end of the day, the vehicle or driver were still not located. The high water levels and increased turbidity severely inhibited search efforts and it

was determined by the RCMP and Search and Rescue that the search would be suspened until the high water levels receded and turbidity cleared up. The remaining civilian volunteers were organized into groups for the purpose of watching and monitoring the river and remained until dark, along with Search and Rescue personnel. At first light on Thursday, June 27th, civilian volunteers and Cranbrook Search and Rescue returned to the scene where the volunteers deployed their monitor groups to watch the river for debris from the crash. In speaking to representatives of this civilian volunteer group, the RCMP was told that the volunteer group will remain at the scene through the weekend. If anyone has any additional information about this incident they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-4893471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers (1-800222-TIPS)

“Not only does investing in your infrastructure provide very good construction jobs, at the end of the project, you have something.” ~ Shelley Berkley, U.S. Congress. Currently, the City of Cranbrook is looking into revamping its sign bylaws. The proposed amendments include reducing the height of signs, the materials the signs are built with and other provisions that council and some citizens want changed or defined. To begin, this is what a municipal council does. As a body elected to represent the citizens of a community, it takes concerns and debates them, has city staff examine the issue and comes back with either new bylaws, amendments to existing bylaws or does nothing. In the case of the sign bylaw, the pressing issue before council seems to be the beautification of Cranbrook, especially the strip that greets visitors when they enter the city. To date, city staff have spent hundreds of hours working on the new sign bylaw and these hours cost money. This is happening at a time when municipalities across the nation are feverishly lobbying the federal and provincial governments for a larger slice of the federal taxation pie – which isn’t easy. Just take a look at the Canada/B.C. Infrastructure Program web page for the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Here you will see at the top of the page, “Program

PHOTO SUBMITTED

This dog is actually standing on the back of a moose. (not really) funds have been fully allocated - applications are no longer being accepted,” with information on funded programs stopped at 2005. So these are lean times for municipal governments. The city takes in most of its revenue through property taxes and sales of services with a small amount coming from the Federal government. In other words, when business is not booming, the city can quickly become cash-strapped. And business owners throughout the community understand this and above all, they understand that business must come first. To them, and others this writer has spoken to, the first item of business for the city should be infrastructure. With the crumbling sewer and road systems throughout the city, they are left scratching their heads as to why the city wants to have them spend time and money on changing their signage. Of course, it could look like a win for the city if the strip sprouted new, signs at the expense of the business owners, but this just increases the burden for business at a time when they need the most help. And none of the new

signage will help the image of the city when visitors and residents alike find themselves having to spend cash on car repairs from the incredible amount of potholes that have appeared over the years. It comes down to this; in tough times you scrimp and save and spend on only the most important things. For Cranbrook, this is infrastructure. It’s not as sexy as “beautification,” but it sure makes the city more liveable. Actually, forget about the greater infrastructure problem for the moment. How about the city just focuses on potholes? What if those hundreds of hours the city has spent on tweaking the sign bylaw went into filling those nasty little craters? Let us at the Advertiser know what you think by taking our online poll or telling me what you think by emailing editor@kootenayadvertiser.com. And while you are at it, why not send in a picture of a pothole in your neighbourhood? Don’t be afraid to get creative. We will put your pictures up on www.kootenayadvertiser.com and place the best ones in our newspaper.

You could win!

Take the paper that goes everywhere on your travels and you could win $1000 in travel clothing from High Country Sportswear and a $1000 travel voucher from Mountain City Travel: a Carlson Wagonlit Agency. First open house a smashing success

After 6 months of construction, New Dawn Developments opened the doors to their newest showhome in Elizabeth Lake Ridge Subdivision for the first

time on Saturday, June 22nd. Sherry Graburn, Design Lead for New Dawn says, “I couldn’t believe how many people attended our first

open house. It was so nice to hear all the comments on our home design and decorating.” “The massive window wall with views to the mountains and

Elizabeth Lake was very well received along with the large bright kitchen with the spacious pantry.” The showhome is called the Meadowlark

and was designed for spacious living with four bedrooms and three and a half baths smartly incorporated in the over 2400 square foot plan. Home pric-

es for the Meadowlark start at $309,000 plus GST. “We sourced unique lighting for the home including a glass skateboard light for one of

the kid’s rooms and the ‘ice cube’ light over the kitchen island,” remarked Graburn. continued on page 9
