Bus driver to test skills at international safety competition By Treena Mielke Tammy Freerksen, whose cheerful smiling face is most often seen in the driver’s seat of a big yellow school bus transporting her precious cargo safely to and from school will take her skill as a bus driver to an international level next month. Freerksen, a Rimbey school bus driver won second in a bus road-eo in Airdrie in May, advancing to a provincial competition held in Leduc in June. She won second in provincials as well, qualifying her to attend the international safety competition in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 20 and 21. Freerksen is excited about the upcoming competition, noting there is only one other school bus driver from Canada who will be competing. Although she has 14 years experience as a bus driver and is confident in her job, she said competing in the road-eo is challenging and pushes her out of her comfort zone. “It is different competing because you don’t have the kids in the bus,” she said. “That puts you out of your comfort zone.” The road-eo consists of a written test comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions, a vehicle inspection test and then several road tests. Freerksen’s bus route includes transporting school children on the Lochart and Leedale roads south of Rimbey. She began driving school bus when her children were young as it was a job which she could work around her family’s schedule. “I enjoy it,” she said. “I wouldn’t still be doing it, if I didn’t.” As it happened, driving a school bus turned out to be a family vocation, as her husband Dodo, also is a spare school bus driver. Both Freerksens qualified for an international road-eo competition several years ago. The safety competition gives drivers an opportunity to demonstrate their professionalism, skill and dedication to pupil transportation. The event culminates with an awards banquet and ceremony, where the winners of the competition are announced. The competition began in 1971 as the National School Bus Safety Road-e-o, and continues to take place on an annual basis.

School Bus Driver Tammy Freerksen from Rimbey is one of two conventional school bus drivers from Canada who will attend the International Safety Competition in Tulsa, Oklahoma July 20 and 21. Freerksen has been driving a school bus route in the Rimbey area for 14 years. Treena Mielke Photo

Playground equipment needed By Treena Mielke A Rimbey mom would like to see the playground beside her home given a name, but more so, she wants some equipment put back into the park so her children and others youngsters in the neighborhood have a reason to play there. “The kids call it dog poop park,” she said, referring to the playground at 46th Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Street. “They are embarrassed to even go there.” Shauna Shields wrote a letter to council asking the town to look at installing minimal equipment such as a swing set and/or basketball hoop. Shields wasn’t concerned when the old playground equipment was taken down, because she assumed it would be replaced. “When I did find out that there wasn’t going to be anything replaced in our playground, the library dilemma was going on, so I felt it was selfish to bring this matter up to council until after the library issue was dealt with.” However, with the long, hot days of summer approaching, Shields is hopeful some steps can be taken to ensure the children in the neighborhood have a safe place to play that is close to home.

“Playground equipment is what draws families together at parks. It will enhance our vicinity and I will guarantee that it would be used daily by many people.” One of the reasons Shields moved to that area of town is because the playground was across the back alley and more young families have moved to the area in the last few years. “Because of the unsafe equipment that was previously there, and now with nothing, it (the park) definitely does not get the usage that it would if it had new and safe equipment. Playground equipment is what draws families to gather at parks. It will enhance our vicinity and I will guarantee that it would be used daily by may people. I would dare to estimate there are at least 40 children under the age of 13 in the region between 45th Ave. to Park Ave., not including the visiting grandchildren of many seniors in the area.” Council agreed to forward the letter to the recreation board before making a decision. “There is nothing budgeted for playgrounds,” said CAO Tony Goode. “If they want to do something, they will have to take the money out of reserves but by the time it is ordered and installed, summer will be over. They could put it in the budget for next year.”

Council meeting changed in July By Treena Mielke

Council agreed to move its next meeting to July 17 from July 15 as Coun. Paul Payson will still be on holidays and Coun. Scott Ellis will also be away. Neither Payson nor Ellis attended the June 24 meeting. Grant to support road work Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson received a letter from Alberta Transportation Minister Ric Mciver stating the town is to receive a grant of $139,102 under the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The funding is to go toward reconstruction work on 53 Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets. Returning officers appointed Executive assistant Kathy Blakely is to be the returning officer and assistant CAO Melissa Beebe to be the deputy returning officer for the municipal election held Oct. 21. Advance polls will be Wed., Oct. 9 and Sat. Oct. 12.

Reading stories about flood ravaged southern Alberta we get just a glimpse of what thousands of people are living through — the uncertainty, the pain and the grief. There have also been amazing stories of unselfish aid. We know, in the end, people will persevere, pick up their lives and continue on their paths. It will take time, yet those memories will eventually dull. There’s been little loss of life — it’s just the “things” that have been damaged and destroyed. We can consider ourselves blessed to live in a country where our neighbours are quick to come to our aid during emergencies. Communities rally around those displaced from their homes, those who have lost everything and those who have a long journey back to normalcy. Over the past week we’ve watched massive amounts of support and aid pour into our part of the world. For those who have the ability to help, whether monetarily or by volunteering, we applaud you for stepping up to lend assistance. As MLA Kerry Towle stated, “folks need our help.” We echo her comments about doing everything you can to support our neighbours. After people have had time to recover, there will be lots of talk about how to avoid similar disasters in our ultra-civilized country. The first shot over the bow came June 25 when New Democrat Leader Brian Mason criticized the government’s handling of the 2006 Groeneveld report that was not released until 2012. “This week, former PC MLA George Groeneveld stressed that the strongest recommendation of his 2006 report was not to build houses or other buildings on flood plains,” said Mason’s news release. Groeneveld wrote the report after much of his riding flooded the previous year. We remember discussion of this topic — building on flood plains — in Ontario more than 40 years ago, yet it continues to happen. Watching television news, we’ve noted southern Alberta isn’t unique in flooding, but it is unique in protecting its residents. As neighbours rose to help, half a world away more than 1,000 people have died in monsoon flooding and landslides in the northern India state of Uttarakhand. Thousands more are still stranded

in high mountain passes in the temple town of Badrinath. A news report from that area stated, “hundreds of thousands of devout Hindus make a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand, visiting four of Hinduism’s holiest shrines in the state during the summer months. The tourists usually head down to the plains before the monsoon breaks in July. But this year, early rains caught hundreds of thousands of tourists, pilgrims and local residents.” Rains washed away homes and roads, triggered landslides and cut off communications links. Sound familiar. Just weeks ago the story was central Europe where the Elbe River had broken through several dikes in northern Germany, and the crest of the swollen Danube River had reached southern Hungary, and threatened Serbia. About 22 people have died in these floods, from reports we could find. A Financial Times report, commenting on the cost to insurance companies of central Europe’s devastation, stated “the floods rank among the 10 most costliest on record worldwide”. These are just two examples of what’s taking

place in the wider world. For those consummate watchers of television news they will remember other reminders of the force of Mother Nature and the devastation she wrecks. Think of Manitoba or the Mississippi River that have been in the news in recent weeks. At Norglenwold’s annual information meeting Saturday, a representative from the Red Cross talked about emergency preparedness — a timely topic given events still unfolding at that time. He encouraged people to create their own plans and prepare for the potential of disaster. After all, as seen in southern Alberta, many people only had seconds or, at most, a few minutes to grab what they could and evacuate. While we live in a community and in a country where people are quick to come to our aid, we must prepare ourselves as well. And following that theme, we believe there will be lots more ideas about how to mitigate future disasters. Are we prepared to consider and embrace the ideas that make sense? We certainly hope so.

A place we’re all proud to call home Dear Editor: The catastrophic flooding in Alberta has been met with an overwhelming response from ordinary and extraordinary Albertans across the province. This was especially evident in Sundre where firefighters, police, EMS, and ordinary citizens have pulled together in an attempt to mitigate the potential flood danger and damage. Each and every one of them is to be commended for their courage in the face of imminent danger and personal loss. The stories of volunteers working diligently to help is inspiring, in spite of the fact that some of them were evacuees themselves. They worked around the clock doing backbreaking work. Simple words cannot describe the fortitude being shown by these people. They have stepped up to the plate in their community’s greatest time of need. In the following weeks, across Al-

berta there is a lot of work to be done cleaning up and rebuilding for those that will be dealing with the devastation that follows this type of disaster. Please remember all of those affected by these tragedies unfolding throughout the province, in your thoughts and prayers. Donations of money, clothing and other essentials will undoubtedly be in great demand, and I encourage everyone to inquire with your local authorities to coordinate your donations with those most in need. I am proud of all of Alberta; you have once again proven that this is the greatest place to live on earth. Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 or existing aid organizations. Joe Anglin, MLA Rimbey-Rocky Mountain HouseSundre

Historian provides interesting overview of town and family’s background By Treena Mielke Years ago, when Margaret Marshall was a schoolgirl and her last name of Rimbey matched the town in which she lived, she decided, one day, to play hooky. The 93-year-old had a twinkle in her eyes as she recalled the day she and a friend decided to skip classes. “My girl friend and I had heard there was a wedding in town and we decided we wanted to go to it,” she said. Marshall, who took a moment to chat after her presentation as the keynote speaker at the Rimbey Old-Timers’ Reunion, said the girls sat in the back row of the church but before long they were spotted by the minister. “I shrank against the wall hoping he wouldn’t notice me,” she said, “but he did.” Finally, the preacher came up to Margaret and much to her surprise and chagrin, asked her if she could play the wedding march because they didn’t have a pianist. She replied she would have to go home and get her music which she did, accompanied by the best man. “I ended up playing for the wedding,” she said. “That’s what happens when you live in a small town. Everyone knew I played the piano.” Marshall, who is the granddaughter of Sam and Molly Rimbey, and the daughter of Chester and Ella Rimbey, grew up on a farm and admitted she never learned to ride a bicycle.

Old-Timer’s Reunion brings old friends together By Treena Mielke Reminiscing and sharing stories, laughter and hugs, dancing and good music, were all part of this year’s 58th Rimbey’s Old-Timer’s Reunion. About 230 people showed up for the reunion, June 22 and 23, with guests coming from as far away as British Columbia. This year the graduating class of 1963 was recognized at the reunion. Fred Gittens from Edmonton enjoyed seeing former classmates again. “It’s nice to see people and catch up,” he said. “Some of them, I need the nametag to tell

There have been lots of changes.” David Boorman, now a retired physician living in Red Deer, also enjoyed the chance to attend the reunion and catch up with old friends. Pat Muddle from Rimbey and her sister, Jan Grant from Red Deer, were among the classes from ’62 and ’63 recognized on stage. Muddle said getting together with friends and reminiscing is fun and interesting. “Unfortunately, it seems often the people who live the closest don’t come and there are others who come quite a distance.” She hadn’t seen some of the people seated at her table for 50 years. “It was ironical that my sister (Jan Grant) discovered someone she went to school with only lived two streets away from her in Red Deer.” Gladys Johnson, president of the Rimbey and District Old-timers’ Association, was pleased with this year’s event. “I found the Rimbey family history particularly interesting.”

Pipeline meeting fosters communication and understanding By Treena Mielke Landowners and oil company representatives rubbed shoulders in a friendly, relaxed setting during a barbecue and information meeting at the Rimbey Community Centre. The meeting, sponsored by the Rimbey Regional Synergy Group, was held June 20 to provide information about pipelines. “It’s a touchy situation right now. Pipelines are big in the news and we wanted to get as much (correct) information out there as possible,” said Frank Kurta, a landowner in the Bluffton area, who is a member of the synergy group. “We want to get away from confrontations between the oil companies and the farmers and promote better understanding.” Kurta said all involved parties need to respect each other when dealing with pipeline issues. He said landowners who have concerns have the right to talk to the oil company involved in a reasonable manner to find out answers. “We had a few people who had their hackles up but we don’t allow grandstanding. If they talk to the oil company, they can usually nip it (their problem) in the bud.” Kurta was pleased with the presentations at the meeting given by Jennifer Lutz and Steven Lutz from Alberta Energy Regulator and Ken Meston from Keyera, pipelines superintendent for Rimbey Gas Plant. “We’ve had really good feedback and will compile the information we received so we can have another open house.” Jennifer Lutz, the senior advisor, community and aboriginal relations, field and operations branch of Alberta Energy Regulator, fielded few questions following the presentation she made with colleague, Steven

Lutz. “There is a lot more discussion about pipelines, and increasing concern, but individual complaints have gone down,” she said. “Pipeline safety has steadily improved, although that is not the perception out there,” she added. During her presentation, Lutz noted provided information regarding pipelines such as removal procedure, abandonment regulations and signage. Indicators there may be problems with a pipeline include areas of stressed vegetation, soil depression along right-

of-way, erosion, changes to natural water flow. Gas bubbles, fluids other surface water, odors and exposed pipe are signs there may be a leak. Concerned landowners can call 1-855-297-8311 during regular office hours or 1-800-222-6514 (24-hour emergency number) or check out the website at www.aer.ca Lutz said, according to data from Canadian Energy Pipelines Association, 1.511 trillion litres of crude oil was safely transported through pipelines in Canada, the majority from Al-

tion network. More than 400,000 kilometres of underground pipeline transports virtually all of Alberta’s oil and gas each day and natural gas production continues to expand at an increasing rate.” Meston said companies look at the impact on the community before a pipeline is built. The environmental impact, the vegetation, wildlife areas and aquatic systems are also taken into consideration. Once the pipeline is built, several methods of inspections are used. “Aerial inspections are completed annually as a minimum. Pipelines that haul liquid products have a tendency to be inspected frequently,” he added. Meston said flyover inspections help identify the surface conditions on and adjacent to roadways or other utility corridors. They also provide indications of any leak in the pipeline. Meston noted pipelines are made of high tensile steel but are not impervious to corrosion. “Corrosion is a major concern when it comes to the integrity of the pipelines,” he said. Internal, electronic inspection devices known’s as smart pigs are run through pipelines and are used to detect anomalies in the pipe. Reports are generated from the data gathered by these electronic devices which are then analyzed by trained professionals. The location of the anomalies is then physically identified along the pipeline route, verification digs completed and anomality repaired. Representatives from Keyera, Conoco Phillips, Imperial Oil, Redcore, Bonavista, NewAlta, Suncor, Encana Pembina Pipe, Penn West and TAQA North were represented at the meeting. Representatives from Ponoka County, Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta One-Call, Farmers’ Advocate Office, Surface Rights Board, Sustainable Resource Development also had booths and displays set up. Also present were representatives from Assistant Property Rights Advocate (Northern Alberta), Devon Energy, Anderson Energy, Gibson Energy Ltd.

MLA deals with flooding in Sundre It’s business as usual for MLA Joe Anglin but he and his staff were evacuated from his Sundre office June 20 as the raging Red Deer River breached its banks, causing minor flooding in town streets. “My office, which is right next to the river, was just about an island,” he said. “I sent my staff home with computers. That’s all we could do.” Anglin, the Wildrose MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre was in Sundre last week surveying the flood damage. “There is significant road damage. We need to take a look at the damage and what needs to be done regarding the roads and bridges in the county.” Anglin said the town evacuated almost its entire east side and a lowlying RV park on the west side on the afternoon of June 20. Later the evacuation order was expanded to include areas up to 500 metres farther inland on the west side. The evacuation sent about half of the town’s 2,700 residents from their homes. The Olds College was set up as a reception area for evacuees. The evacuation order was lifted the next day for most residents with

the exception of the Greenwood RV Village. Anglin was impressed with the volunteer help that poured in when the threat of flooding occurred. “Sundre is no stranger to tragedy,” he said. “It’s amazing the number of people that showed up to fill sandbags. It was very impressive how it brought the entire community together.” In 2005, flooding damaged more than 300 homes in Sundre, in Mountainview County, 130 kilometres northwest of Calgary. Anglin said Wildrose party officials want to do what they can to help flood victims in Calgary, High River and at the Siksika Nation, a First Nations reserve southeast of Calgary.

Seniors in Bentley will soon have new opportunities to volunteer, mentor younger generations and help raise awareness of elder abuse thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). “Our government recognizes the diversity of skills, knowledge and experience that seniors contribute to our society and the economy,” said Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins. “Through initiatives such as the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue as active, participating members of their communities.” The Bentley Seniors Drop In will receive $11,780 for its project to resurface floors and upgrade washrooms to continue to support social participation of seniors through weekly dance sessions, drop-in coffee, cards and friendship.

Royals bring splash of color to parade By Treena Mielke The Red Deer Royals will add a brilliant splash of color, their wonderful musical talent and a general feeling of excitement to the Rimbey parade this year as in the past. Tanya Mercredi, administrative assistant for Rimbey recreation department, said plans for this year’s parade are coming together well. “We will have the Royals. They love coming to Rimbey and we love to have them,” she said. “Also this year we were approached by the Red Deer Adult Marching Band, so we will have them as well.” Mercredi said there is no entry fee or registration required to take part in the parade July 13. Participants are asked to be at the high school field before 10:30 a.m. and the parade will leave the gates at 11 a.m. This year, as in the past, vintage trucks from the Smithson Truck Museum will be used to transport dignitaries along the parade route. Candy will be thrown out along

the parade route but Mercredi cautions parents to ensure their children don’t run out in front of moving vehicles or animals to collect their treats. “We want to keep throwing candy but it is becoming increasingly more difficult.” Volunteers for the parade are always welcome, said Mercredi. Anyone who wishes to help out with annual fun event may contact the Rimbey recreation department at 843-3151. The Beatty House Society will be busy on parade day, serving its usual fare of hotdogs, smokies and all the delicious fixings. The Beatty House grounds is a delightful place to enjoy this fare, served following the parade. During parade day only, the Rimbey Farmers’ Market will be held at the Servus Credit Union parking lot. Some businesses will participate in a sidewalk sale throughout the day. Chamber of Commerce president Jackie Stratton said ongoing activities uptown will create a busy, exciting atmosphere. “We want to create a buzz uptown,” she said.

Protect our environment. Albertans recycled over 1.8 billion beverage containers last year – more than ever before. Let’s continue to do something good for the environment, and make 2013 another record-breaking year.

Victim Services helps RCMP in domestic cases In the past two weeks, the Rimbey RCMP have responded to 75 calls for service. These calls include impaired driving, drug seizures and property crime offences. In handling several incidents of domestic discord, the Rimbey Victim Service Unit was a valuable partner. Oil lease vandalism continues Thefts and vandalism to lease sites continues to be a problem in the Iola Road area. In one incident thieves stole from and vandalized a lease site to the tune of almost $30,000. The Rimbey detachment is following up on all possible leads and actively investigating these matters. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious vehicles on lease site, as unless they have a reason to be there, they are trespassing. Drunk drivers arrested RCMP have dealt with three impaired drivers. One driver was high on drugs and was driving his three-yearold child around. A 40-year-old resident of Rimbey must have found the

All have had their licences suspended and will be headed to court. Short joy ride On June 18, a lazy thief stole a vehicle with the keys left in it from in front of a grocery store and drove it a whole two blocks. Police wonder if the energy saved by stealing this car was worth the potential consequences. Beware identity theft scam Another familiar scam is making the go around in Rimbey. Fab Beatles story will make children want to dance Ants are cool: they run all over, really fast, like they don’t know where they’re going. Some of them even carry things that seem heavy — if you’re an ant, that is. You like watching bugs, beetles, and butterflies, though you know that they make some people squirm and scream. But in the new book The Beatles Were Fab (and They were Funny) by Kathleen Krull & Paul Brewer, illustrated by Stacy Innerst, you’ll read about Beatles that made people dance. Life wasn’t easy when John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr grew up. Their northern England town was “scruffy” but the lads didn’t care much; they had their music and they had fun together, especially when they were coming up with a name for their band. They had a lot of possibilities but they eventually settled on calling themselves The Beatles and that made them laugh. In the first few years that The Beatles were together, they played hundreds and hundreds of shows in small clubs in England and Germany. That didn’t pay well but it made them very popular and it gave them a chance to be silly. Pretty soon, they got a recording contract and their first song went on the radio. That song was followed by another and another — and fans screamed for more. The Beatles made a record that sold a million copies and they stopped playing in small clubs. Instead, they played and sang in front of the Queen of England. When one of their

songs became a number 1 hit in America, the lads naturally wanted to make their U.S. fans happy, so they came to New York. Three thousand people met The Beatles at the airport. Even more came to see them at TV studios, at the Hollywood Bowl, onstage in Denver, and in Philadelphia. At some concerts, the fans screamed so loud that The Beatles couldn’t even hear themselves sing. The Beatles Were Fab (and They Were Funny) is a good book. Older Beatles fans will love reading it aloud to kids and grandkids. But will little readers care about what’s inside this children’s picture book?

I Authors Kathleen Krull & Paul Brewer tell the story of the Fab Four in a way that kids can surely understand, even if they don’t grasp the significance of it. Instead, I think the kid appeal of this book may be found in the artwork by Stacy Innerst: it’s colorful, and there are a few good giggles hidden in each page. Perhaps the best way to introduce your kids to this book is to start with some Beatles music. Hit play, read The Beatles Were Fab (and They Were Funny), and your child will be saying yeah, yeah, yeah.

Interesting weather phenomenon in the Canadian prairies If you turned on the news, Twitter, or Facebook in the last week, you were sure to have seen some interesting weather phenomenon in North America. Within a few hours, communities across the Canadian Prairies and the American Midwest saw how quickly Mother Nature can rain down on them and destroy. Flash floods in places like High River, Cal-

gary, Medicine Hat, Redvers, Sask., Reston, Man., Pipestone, Man., Iowa City, Iowa, and parts of Minnesota certainly weren’t what their residents were expecting to deal with to start summer. While aid and volunteers are plentiful for these communities, the extra rain isn’t making too many farmers fist-pump across the Prairies.

It did look like nicer weather for the long weekend though. The wet weather didn’t necessarily force Statistics Canada’s acreage report to reflect smaller numbers but instead showed a slight uptick in canola acres (600,000 more) and a small drawdown Brennan Taylor of total wheat planted FarmLead from farmers’ original intentions back in March. The same accuracy questions can probably be expected from the USDA’s Acreage and Stocks Report. Overall, while it may be wetter than many are expecting, the market sees the weather here in North America as generally positive for crop production. The same can be said in many places around the world as, recently, five major private agricultural analysts have provided their forecasts for the 2013-14 marketing year and they all include lower grain prices. Speaking of prices, tight wheat supplies in Argentina have skyrocketed the cost of wheat 66 per cent since the start of 2013 to $363/tonne (local warehoused price). Only about 7.9 million acres of wheat was planted last year in the South American country, with another 9.9 million acres expected to go in this year (normally between 12-15 million

acres but farmers are switching over to soybeans, barley, and other crops). Combine this with poor yields, the government actually cut its export quota by half to three million tonnes and for the first time in about 60 years, Argentina will become a net importer of wheat. Speaking of wheat, the mess that is Egypt’s grain trade continues precariously. Egypt’s supply minister said a few weeks ago their wheat imports/ buying will resume at the end of their fiscal year (June 30) but last week he said now they won’t buy until the end of the calendar year. Ultimately, despite talks with the International Monetary Fund improving about getting a $4.8 billion loan (US), the Egyptian government seems to not comprehend that they need money to buy grain for their people. As the largest buyer of wheat, this is significant. On the macroeconomic front, both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the People’s Bank of China have indicated that the days of “easy money” — aka stimulus or quantitative easing — are over. Broader markets fell off on these comments as some suggest that the liquidity provided by the Fed and the PBC is like steroids, artificially pumping up the market. From an agricultural standpoint, a stronger U.S. dollar makes it more expensive for other countries to purchase American goods but allows U.S. buyers to come into Canada more willingly to purchase our grain. With more grain available this year and a stronger US dollar, unless significant negative weather sets in over the next two to four weeks, upside potential will be limited and selling opportunities should be taken advantage of on short rallies in the market. Date yet to be set for a swim meet fundraiser

Church

By Treena Mielke A fundraiser to support the Global Enrichment Foundation has the endorsement of council but a date for the event is yet to be determined. At its June 24 meeting, council gave the go-ahead to Emily Falk, president of BRITE, the Red Deer Chapter of the Global Enrichment Foundation to proceed with the 2013 Swim for Somalia fundraiser. However, council wants Falk to come up with a different date than Aug. 17, as she requested in her letter. “Myself, I’d like to see the pool left open on this Saturday,’ said Coun. Gayle Rondeel. “I don’t like the idea of taking away from the public swim.” The fundraiser is to include a swim marathon to take place at the Rimbey Aquatic Centre in which teams and individuals can register. Live musicians may also be part of the event, said Falk in her letter to council. “This is an excellent opportunity to have your facility and the town of Rimbey recognized for their support,” Falk said, adding the swim has the potential to bring locals together for a good cause. “Businesses will greatly benefit from the influx of swim participants, thus boosting the town’s economy. Additionally, the Rimbey Aquatic Centre will benefit from the influx of individuals into your new facility — building a wide network of support as individuals spread the work about the facility.” The Global Enrichment Foundation is a non-profit organization, founded in 2010 by kidnapped journalist Amanda Lindhout. It is dedicated to igniting leadership through educational and community-based employment programs, while undertaking humanitarian and life-saving emergency interventions in times of crisis. The GEF’s mission is to provide women and girls with opportunities to empower themselves through education and economic capacity building — paving the way for all individuals to be agents of change and advocates for themselves, their family and their community.

Pool closed for repairs By Treena Mielke Problems continue to plague Rimbey’s Aquatic Centre, and the pool is now closed for repairs. Rimbey CAO Tony Goode said the main drain is not working properly and the pool will be closed until after the long weekend in July. “We are going to have the town’s engineers look at it.” Goode said a camera used to take pictures of water and sewer lines that was purchased by the town last year will be used to help identify the problem. The spray park has remained closed as well this summer as construction is ongoing on 53rd Street adjacent to the pool. “They were supposed to be done by

KREIL It is with sadness, but no regret that we announce the passing of Rolly Stanley Kreil of Crestomere, Alberta who passed away peacefully at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Ponoka on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the age of 78 years, one day before his 79th birthday. Rolly was born at Newhome, Alberta on June 23, 1934 to Fred and Tillie Kreil, the third of seven children. He married the love of his life, Esther Eberwein on November 6, 1954 in Orion, Alberta, and they became a family of six by 1962. Rolly worked for different farmers in the south country, saving money to buy his own farm. In 1959, he and his brother, Wallace bought a farm together in Rolling Hills, Alberta. Desiring non-irrigation farming, Rolly and Esther moved their family to Crestomere in 1964. Life was good and they, along with their children, worked hard to make ends meet. They also played hard and cherished every moment spent with friends and family, hosting many neighbourhood dances and parties. Rolly loved his grandchildren, playing his guitar, horseshoes, golfing, traveling, dancing, and playing cards. Above all, he cherished his family and recognized the need for a strong, gentle father figure in all families. To this end, he also became dad and mentor to several young people who had lost their fathers at an early age. Sharmayne, Charlie, Steve, Mark, and Todd shared in this family privilege. Rolly and Esther actively farmed until 2011, when a stroke forced him to retire. They moved into Ponoka where they resided until Rolly passed away from heart failure. He spent his birthday in Heaven. Rolly will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 58 years, Esther; his two sons, Reg (Mabel) Kreil and Rick Kreil; and his two daughters, Melody (Scott) Campbell and Debbi (Wade) Raugust; as well as eleven grandchildren: Shane (Robyn), Travis (Cassie), Roger, Gary, Mathew, Shannon, Carleen (Glynn), Haley (Brendan), Amanda (Kyle), Jesse, and Paige; and eight great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered by three brothers: Mel Kreil, Tony Kreil, and Ralph (Dorothy) Kreil; two sisters, Ethel Weiland and June (Leonard) Mitzel; and his sister-in-law, Carol Kreil; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Rolly was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Tillie Kreil; an infant son, Donald; his brother, Wally Kreil; and his sister-in-law, Cecelia. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Rolly’s Life was held in the Gymnasium of the Crestomere School, Crestomere on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Gordon Rowland officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Rolly’s Memory may be made directly to Wolf Creek Youth Unlimited/YFC, 5025 - 50 Street, Lacombe, Alberta T4L 1X9. TENNANT Mr. Hugh Robert Tennant of Hoadley Alberta passed away peacefully at the Ponoka Hospital on Friday June 21, 2013 at the age of 84 years; with his family by his side. Hugh was born in Cadogan Alberta, and was the second oldest of six children born to Robert and Sarah Tennant. Hugh was raised on the family farm in the Silver Lake district until 1948. He worked long hours on the farm and preferred the late shift when doing the field work. He made time for his family and neighbours, and loved to play tricks, tell a joke, and big bonfires. Hugh was predeceased by his loving wife Jean on January 27, 2013, by his parents, Robert and Sarah Tennant, two infant daughters; Robin and Sandra, one brother Wilfred and two sisters Colleen and Ruby, and an infant sister Elsie.
