No jail time for ex-Merritt top cop By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
newsroom@merrittherald.com
GOOD CLEAN FUN The second annual Merritt Mud Races held this past weekend at the former site of the Merritt Mountain Music Festival by the North West Mud Racing Association drew a large crowd over two days. Many racers, such as the one pictured above, came out to let the mud fly and put on a show. The stars of the races were the F-Class pro paddle vehicles, which flew through the 200-foot mud lanes in under three seconds. Michael Potestio/Herald
Merritt’s former top cop will not spend any time behind bars for stealing and using cocaine from police evidence lockers. Former Staff Sgt. Stuart Seib, 54, was given a conditional discharge in a Kelowna courtroom on Tuesday, which means he will not have a criminal record if he does not breach his oneyear probation. Provincial court Judge Jane Cartwright also ordered him to
perform 50 hours of community service. Seib pled guilty to breach of trust for the thefts, which occurred while he was stationed in Merritt. In court this spring, he testified that he was self-medicating to cope with post traumatic stress disorder following the 2002 death of a girl who had sought his help for issues at home two years earlier. The 19-year veteran of the RCMP resigned from the force in 2012 and will face no internal discipline.
Stabbing just beginning of trauma By Michael Potestio THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Merritt mother Tracey Johnson still doesn’t know when the trauma will come to an end. The single mother of two was stabbed between 15 and 18 times on Feb. 27, 2012 after answering her door to a man she didn’t know who was seeking a ride home. Eighteen-year-old Gibson Rhyss Smithers attacked Johnson from behind, stabbing her in the head, neck, arms, chest and back.
Johnson’s then threeyear-old son Kolten witnessed the incident. Johnson had her lungs punctured and they collapsed. She lost a lot of blood and her injuries were life-threatening. She was initially sent to the Nicola Valley Health Centre and then transferred to Royal Inland Hospital. She went on to make a full recovery. Smithers was charged with aggravated assault for his attack on Johnson. Last Thursday in a Kamloops provincial court-
room, Judge Dev Dley accepted a joint submission by the Crown and the defense council that will see Smithers spend two years in federal prison and serve a 10-year-long supervision order. Smithers received credit for the 16 months he’s served in provincial jail so far as he’s been in custody since the incident occurred. He was also given a 10-year weapons ban and is required to submit a DNA sample for the national registry. Smithers had no prior
criminal history before the attack on Johnson. Speaking with the Herald from her Quilchena Avenue home, Johnson said seeing Smithers get the jail time is not satisfying to her, but the 10-year supervision order is. She said having him under supervision is better than jail time could ever be. However, she also said seeing Smithers get charged with aggravated assault rather than attempted murder for the stabbing incident makes her question the legal system. Johnson said the worst
part of the ordeal was the fact the attack came from behind. “The worst part for me was it all happening from behind, not seeing any of it coming,” Johnson said. She said last Thursday’s sentencing wasn’t a moment of closure for her. That closure first came six days after the incident, when Johnson was about to get out of the hospital. She said her then threeyear-old son Kolten — who is five now — asked her, “Mommy, are we safe now?”

“And I answered my son, ‘Yes, we’re safe, Kolten,’ and he [said], ‘Well, that’s good Mom, because we’re just going to pray for him to be a good man when he gets out of jail,” Johnson said. She said she was out of the hospital in a week even though it was expected she would need to spend a month there. Johnson said it’s hard for her to forgive her attacker, but she does so because of her son.

Banding together to fight cancer Local fundraiser to help Lower Nicola Indian Band member living in Winnipeg win battle against stage four cancer By Michael Potestio THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Lawrence Bose feels alone out in Winnipeg. He’s lived in Manitoba eight years now but grew up in Merritt and is a member of the Lower Nicola Indian Band. He said he hopes to return to Merritt and often thinks about coming back to his home province. Bose, 29, was diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer in February after having an emergency colonoscopy in Carman, Man. Stage five is terminal, he said. Bose said he currently lives at the Lennox Bell Lodge next to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre hospital with his girlfriend, who has been by his side the entire time. He said aside from her, he has no friends or family with him for support. Though he may not have many people by his side in Manitoba, back in Merritt, Bose has a friend who is raising money to help him with medical expenses as he fights cancer. Merritt resident Alison Cisco has known Bose since they were kids. Cisco held a bottle drive for her friend in April, which raised about $200 for him. Now, Cisco is holding her second fundraiser for her friend on Saturday at the Hitch ‘n’ Post restaurant. The event includes a dinner, a loonie auction and a 50/50 draw. Cisco said the reason
she decided to do this for her friend is because she felt if she was in his position, she couldn’t imagine doing it alone. “I think it was the fact that he didn’t have anyone to help him. Just hearing his story, I couldn’t picture myself doing that much with no help and no family support, or no friends or anything,” Cisco said. Bose said the fact people he doesn’t even know have been making donations to his cause is amazing. Bose said he commutes to the St. Boniface Hospital three times a week for chemotherapy treatment. He said at first he took a taxi back and forth between Winnipeg and his home in Winkler, Man. — about 100 km southwest of Winnipeg — which could cost up to $300. Bose said his cancer has also spread to his liver. “I got a tumour on my liver and it’s making some little masses form on the other side of my liver,” Bose said. He said doctors are trying to eliminate the cluster on his liver, then surgically remove the half with the tumour. He also said he has been trying different types of chemotherapy, the first of which made the cancer more aggressive and grow. He said doctors now have him on another type of chemo, which they hope will shrink the tumour so they can perform surgery. Bose said he was working as a roofer prior to discovering he had

cancer and first noticed he wasn’t healthy when he began bleeding from the rectum. He said he spent many nights awake due to the pain and was in and out of doctors’ offices in Winkler. “They all just kept on saying, ‘Oh, it’s nothing, it’s nothing, you might have a fissure or internal hemorrhoids.’ I said, ‘No, I know my body. There’s something seriously wrong with me,’” Bose said. He told the Herald he had been bleeding like that for a year but Winkler doctors shrugged off his pleas for a colonoscopy, claiming he was too young to
have cancer. Bose said he saw about six doctors before seeing his girlfriend’s doctor in Carman, about 40 km north of Winkler. He was sent for a colonoscopy and a tumour was discovered 10 centimetres into his rectum, he said. Once discovering he had cancer, he was sent to Winnipeg to be treated. “Everything just stopped. I quit my job, I just left my house behind and came to the city and [have] been here ever since,” Bose said. Bose said when he first came to the Health Sciences Centre, doctors told him his cancer had

travelled far into his liver and the best they could do was try and keep him alive as long as possible. “They basically sent me back to my room in tears, and I was sitting there not knowing what to do,” said Bose, who soon received a phone call from a doctor from the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Bose said Dr. Ralph Wong told him he had a team of 12 oncologists who were interested in his file and wanted to try to find a cure to save his life. Excited by the good news, Bose went to see the doctor, who set out the plan he had for him. Bose said he told him they had 15 different types of chemo to try and though it would be a long fight, their goal is to cure him. Bose said he goes for a CT scan to see if this second batch of chemo has helped on July 3. He’ll find out if he needs to continue taking it or try a third type of chemotherapy. He also said there’s a possibility he might be sent to Toronto to try a trial drug, which has been found to stop breast cancer from spreading and can be used to treat rectal cancer too. Bose said he is not bleeding anymore and the tumour in his rectum has shrunk about 30 per cent in the last few months. As for medical expenses, Bose said when he abruptly had to quit work due to his illness, he had to go on social assistance.

Biking on sidewalks against bylaw The following is an excerpt from the City of Merritt May 2013 bylaw report. Downtown core foot patrol Downtown foot patrol continues to have a positive effect on the downtown core of our community. Bicycle and skateboard issues have been reduced considerably. However, as the biking and skateboard season approaches, the bylaw office will step up the education
and enforcement in our downtown core. Enforcement of the two-hour parking limit in our downtown core continues to be challenging for the bylaw office in terms of available time resources. With the addition of the new part-time bylaw officer on the weekends, the message will get out. Bylaw continues to edcuate and warn cyclists and skateboarders that city sidewalks are for pedestrians only. The message is polite but clear: there is no cycling,
skateboard or inline skating on our downtown sidewalks. Watering regulations Sprinkling regulations are effective May 1 to Sept. 30. The city has advertised through the newspaper, radio and the city website to provide advanced notice to all residents of the upcoming regulations. The regulations provide a convenient watering schedule for the citizens of Merritt as well as allowing the aquifer to rebound. There is a zero tolerance pol-
icy and anyone who chooses to water outside of their watering times will receive a $50 fine for each offence. The new regualtions are outlined below: Basic sprinkler from 6 to 8 a.m., and 7 to 10 pm. Automatic sprinkler from midnight to 4 a.m. Even addresses water on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and odd addresses water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. There is no sprinkling on Sunday.
Central Park upgrades a 2012 achievement The following is an excerpt from the City of Merritt 2012 Annual Report. Leisure Services achievements in 2012 Central Park conceptual plan: This project was initiated by local user groups who wanted to work towards a process to identify and prioritize future improvements in the city’s active playing parks, Central
and Voght. The city created the Outdoor Recreational Facilites Users Committee to work towards that end. The committee members were appointed by city council and included representation from local sports organizations such as minor soccer, minor softball, minor lacrosse, and merritt slow-pitch as well as the local community. The committee identified the needed
improvements and created a priority list for implementation of those items. The result of this process was that a conceptual plan was created, along with cost estimates and the priorities identified for a phased-in approach for the various components. An open house was held in early in the fall of 2012 with approximately 70 people in attendance. The overall
response was largely positive for the project and phase one (a lacrosse box and a new washroom/concession building) was approved by city council as part of the 2013 Capital Plan. Other key components of the plan include the development of a large multi-use soccer field, the addition of lights on ball fields three
and four, completion of the walking trail through Central Park to Rotary Park, impoved Central Park parking, and the development of a proper oval-shaped, shale walking/running track at Voght Park. It is anticipated that the remaining phases of the plan will be implemented within the next three to five years.

Mother fighting for custody after attack From Page 1 “If my three-yearold can say that after watching me just about get killed, I can forgive anything,” Johnson said, adding she struggles with forgiveness at times. For Johnson, the trauma she went through didn’t end after she was attacked. Throughout Smithers’ sentencing, which Johnson attended last Thursday, she continuously heard talk of how he needs to be rehabilitated. “Where’s the help for the victims?” she said, adding she has now had to fight to keep her child and fight through rehabilitation. She said for her, the trauma of the stabbing is nothing compared to having her son removed from her care multiple times. She told the Herald a couple weeks after the stabbing incident the Ministry of
Tracey Johnson with her son Kolton at the Canada Day celebrations at Rotary Park. Johnson was a victim of a stabbing in February 2012 and has since then had her son taken away from her on three separate occasions. She told the Herald she can only see her son during supervised visits. Michael Potestio/Herald
Children and Family Development took her son away from her. Since the stabbing, she’s had to fight to keep her son on three separate occassions. Johnson also said she
has been under intense scrutiny by the ministry, especially because she’s a recovering crackcocaine addict. Johnson said she got her son back quickly after some court battles,
but he was taken away from her again a few weeks later when she got a speeding ticket while travelling to Kamloops. Johnson said she got into an altercation with the officer who pulled her over. She said her negative behaviour towards the officer, which occurred in front of her son and 22-year-old daughter, resulted in Kolten’s removal from the home a second time. She said it took about six months before she was able to get him back in her custody. This past May, Johnson said she had her son taken away from her a third time and he is currently living with caretakers. She said she has been allowed to see her son on supervised visits. A ministry spokesperson told the Herald they cannot comment on specific details of a case due to privacy laws, but said the safety of a child is always top
“I have my hope. I’m not giving up yet.” Bose said social assistance will usually pay for all the prescriptions he needs but sometimes there are complications and inconsistencies with coverage. He said this has been the case with Aboriginal Affairs too. “It’s just off and on. Some days it’ll be covered and some days you never know, so I always try and keep money on me when I can,” Bose said, adding he’s had to use his food money to pay for those medications at times. He said he transferred to the Swan Lake band in Manitoba — where his girlfriend is from — so he could work on the reserve as a security guard, which he did for four years. He said the Swan Lake band will send him about $200 a month or so, but because he lives in the city, that money doesn’t go a long way. He said if all goes
well, he’d like to move back to Merritt and continue chemotherapy here. Bose said he’s still hopeful as he’s tried just two of the 15 combina-
tions of chemotherapy so far. “There’s always one they can find that will stop it or shrink it, so I’m pretty confident. I have my hope. I’m not
giving up yet,” he said. “I still feel pretty confident that they’ll find a cure, but my journey’s just begun. This ain’t going to go away anytime soon.”

the Word, the World

When When I am writing Wh riti iting th iti this thi this, the th ne news on the T.V. is covering the great tornado in the south. What terrible destruction! One man called it the “storm of storms.” The good news is, very few people lost their lives. This tells me that God had His hand over it all. Daniel, the prophet, talks about troubles at the end of time. God told Job that He has reserved bad times for the end to “wake people up.” When we look at prophecy now it is like a book of history. Daniel, with a prophecy 2300 days in advance... we will look at that later. John, with his 1260 years of persecution. As it is coming towards the Ànish, we have a prophecy of the morning star which gives hope of a better day ahead. The morning star was John Wycliff, who was the Àrst of the reformers. In the later 1200s, the Bible was still written by hand. In the letters Mr. Wycliff circulated, only small fractions of the word were included. Then, in the later 1400s, the Àrst printing press was
invented. Here is Daniel’s prophecy. He said towards the end that knowledge would be increased. This press was a far cry of the printers we have today, but sure was faster than hand writing. This was a real boost for the reformation, and it spread. At about this time, America became a place of refuge, and the power of Rome began to lessen. In the 1600s, there were few people who were put to death for their beliefs. As time passed, such men as Luther and many others grew old and passed to their rest as is the state of men. The truth that these early pioneers found in the word was treasured, and charities began to spring up around their teachings. Now we come to the 1700s. Things continued to move ahead. The U.S. got its freedom from England and became a nation of refugees, which fulÀlled another prophecy.

priority. “A decision to remove a child is not made lightly — and is made to reduce the risk to the child. We would only remove a child if there is concern about the family’s ability to safely care for that child. A judge makes the final decision about whether a child should remain in care or be returned to the parents,” the spokesperson said. “The ministry makes every effort to keep families together. Our goal is always to return a child to his or her family — but only when it is safe for the child to do so.” Johnson said she never had the ministry come to her door regarding her son prior to the attack.

HERALD OPINION The National Felons League hits the police blotter again By Christopher Foulds
KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
Yet another National Football League player has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a continent emits a collective yawn. Aaron Hernandez is a star tight end with the New England Patriots who just signed a $40-million contract extension with the club. Unfortunately, the hulking Hernandez will likely be making pennies cleaning potties rather than making millions meandering to the end zone as he is charged with shooting to death his friend, Odin Lloyd, and suspected in two other murders in 2012. According to the San Diego Union-Times’ NFL Arrests Database (which can be viewed online at utsandiego.com/nfl/arrests-database), there have been at least 38 NFL player arrests this year for something more serious than a speeding ticket. These include Hernandez’s murder charge, Cleveland linebacker Ausar Walcott’s attempted murder charge and Adam Jones’ assault charge for allegedly hitting a woman in a nightclub (the latest in a string of criminal charges against the Cincinnati cornerback, who for some reason continues to receive second, third and fourth chances by various teams). There seem to be so many charges (assault, drug possession, DUI, failure to pay child support) and so many players that the perceived allencompassing criminality of NFL players becomes like white noise. Because pro athletes are celebrities, an arrest makes the headlines.

YOUR OPINION Praise for rounded prices Arrest rates in NFL below U.S. average Dear Editor, Bravo! The 5A Diner (formerly the Elephant Ranch Restaurant) at the Husky Truck Stop/ Greyhound Bus Depot has finally done what every restaurant should do. Their menu features all prices at even dollars
(no cents) with taxes included! Brilliant! Imagine ordering three items priced at $2, $3, and $7 and getting a bill showing a total amount due of $12. No more adding up the the bill to determine why it seems to total significantly more than what had been ordered.
I challenge other Merritt restaurants (and retailers in general) to do the same. And, just maybe, gas stations could round out their prices to the nearest penny. Oops, now I’ve gone too far. Ben Myrick Merritt
“Exorbitant” gas prices a hot topic for travellers Dear Editor, I am forwarding this letter from a friend of mine [from Chilliwack]. I believe you can hear the frustration in the tone of the letter. I am a resident of the Merritt area, and I, for one, avoid purchasing gasoline here whenever possible. I know of one person who actually takes a halfdozen or so jerry cans and goes to Kamloops to purchase his gas and, of course while there, does a lot of other shopping. I think it is about time that the residents of Merritt take a stand on this issue. It’s not just about gasoline — this is affecting the economy of this area. I’m surprised we never hear from the business community on this issue. ‘Merritt and District Chamber of Commerce: ‘I frequently visit your area on fishing and camping trips and have been dismayed to find the exorbitant cost of gasoline that is of significant interest to those of us pulling trailers and other recreational vehicles. You can believe this is a topic of conversation around every campfire among us campers and anglers and it should be of concern to Merritt’s chamber of commerce as well. Just one example of many I could give is that on our most recent trip, the cost of gasoline in Merritt was $1.44.9/litre while in my hometown it was $1.31.9 — quite a
difference. ‘There are many words used to describe the situation, most being unprintable. Two that I can use are “rip-off ” and “gouging.” ‘Many others and I have solved the problem by filling up in Hope and carrying a jerry can with additional litres of gasoline. ‘Many of us are now avoiding Merritt. That means we are not only avoiding the gas stations but also not visiting eating establishments, shopping for groceries or visiting your retail outlets such as Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart. ‘The bottom line is that Merritt is not necessary at all. More and more of us are simply passing through. The ultimate insult is that I found gas in Logan Lake at $1.33.9 compared to Merritt’s $1.44.9. ‘May I be so bold to suggest that you discuss this “problem” with your members who are selling gasoline and perhaps they can put pressure on the parent companies that set gasoline prices. The whole retail community would benefit if visitors found prices to be reasonable and competitive. ‘The good news is that I do not live in Merritt and am not forced to pay the outrageous prices on a daily basis. I am surprised that there has not been a major community uprising. ‘Thank you for allowing me to bring this concern to your attention. Our concern should be your concern.’ Dennis Sherwin Merritt
From Page 6 When Hernandez or another player is arrested for murder, it dominates headlines in newspapers, on TV, on radio and on the Internet. When 23 people are slain in crime-infested Camden, N.J., in the first six months of 2013, not one of the 23 killings will approach the media coverage given the Hernandez case. No celebrity, little span of coverage. While it may appear as though the NFL is a league rampant with crime, the arrest rate of its players remains far below the national average in the U.S. According to Stephen Bronars of Bronars Economics, the arrest rate for NFL players has averaged about 2.9 per cent compared to 10.8 per cent for men ages 22 to 34, based on FBI crime data by age for men in 2009. Another interesting piece of data revolves around which players are more likely to be arrested. Wide receivers accounted for more than one of six arrests, cornerbacks accounted for about one of seven arrests and linebackers accounted for one of eight arrests. On the other side of the crime spectrum are the small punters and kickers, accounting for one of 82 arrests, and those big offensive
guards, accounting for one of 98 arrests. All of which helps pinpoint what these guys would do if, tomorrow, pro football was banned in the U.S. Obviously, punters and kickers would become real-estate agents (hello, Paul McCallum) or accountants. Offensive linemen would be saltof-the-earth guys sweating it out on a construction site. Quarterbacks (pivots without the Ryan Leaf and Michael Vick genes) would still shine — they simply have “it” and, even without football, would wind up with some fantastic job, making a load of money. Wide receivers would be serving time for various infractions, mostly involving DUI offences. Cornerbacks would be their cellmates, serving time for a variety of transgressions, mostly involving spousal assault. Linebackers would be in the cell across the way, serving time for a potpourri of offences, mostly involving beat-downs at nightclubs. Running backs would be in line at the government office, filing for bankruptcy as the number of childsupport demands hits double figures. Of course, they would need to take a number and wait their turn — behind the lineup of NBA stars. Christopher Foulds is the editor of Kamloops This Week.

Surrey duo arrested in Canada Day bomb plot
Keep your gutter running clean Ask about our leaf guard Need New Gutters? Have A Leaky Mess?
Police call it case of domestic terrorism, inspired by ‘Al-Qaida’ By Jeff Nagel
BLACK PRESS
Two Surrey residents accused of planting pressure cooker bombs outside the B.C. legislature on Canada Day are described by police as “Al-Qaida-inspired” but “self-radicalized.” B.C. RCMP arrested John Stewart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody in Abbotsford at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon after a fivemonth investigation that began in February. The alleged homegrown terror plot is similar to that of the Boston Marathon bombers, who used pressure cooker bombs to send shrapnel through the crowd near the race’s finish line on April 15. RCMP seized three explosive devices made from pressure cookers that contained nails, bolts, nuts and washers that were placed on the legislative assembly grounds. Nuttall, 38 and Korody, 29, are charged with making or possessing an explosive device, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and knowingly facilitating terrorist activity.
“These individuals were inspired by Al-Qaida ideology,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said. “Our investigation has determined this was a domestic threat without international linkages.” The alleged motive of the two accused is not clear but there is no indication of any connection to Islamic beliefs or religion. The RCMP says the pair “took steps to build explosive devices and place them at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria where crowds were expected to gather on Canada Day.” The legislative lawn and inner harbour were crowded with an estimated 40,000 revelers for Monday’s Canada Day concert and fireworks. Police aren’t saying if undercover officers were working with the duo but Malizia said they were being closely monitored and police ensured the bombs were inert and could not detonate. “While the RCMP believed this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk,” Malizia said.
“We detected the threat early and disrupted it.” The arrests were made after a joint investigation of the RCMP E Division, the Canadian Border Services Agency and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, dubbed Project Souvenir. “I want to reassure our citizens that at all times during the investigation, our primary focus was the safety and protection of the public,” Malizia said. Nor was the Canada Day crowd in Victoria the only potential target that may have been contemplated. “The suspects were committed to acts of violence and discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout, adding they were “self-radicalized” and aimed to cause “maximum impact to Canadian citizens at the B.C. legislature on a national holiday.” A variety of covert investigation methods were used to control any method the suspects had to commit harm, he added. Rideout said the bombs are believed to
have been made in Surrey and at other locations in B.C. “As these devices were constructed, we were in very tight control,” he said. “We were confident that public risk was absolutely minimized.” Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said the two alleged terrorists have lived in Surrey for about 18 months and had a transient lifestyle, moving fluidly in the region from Delta to Surrey to Vancouver. She couldn’t say whether the pair had substance abuse issues. “I can’t confirm that; I know that they had significant challenges in their life,” Watts said. She also understands they gathered much of their information about what they were doing from the Internet. “I think they’re fairly unsophisticated,” Watts said. Korody has no prior criminal charges, but Nuttall was convicted of robbery in 2003 in Victoria and received an 18-month conditional sentence. An addicted drug user at the time, Nuttall had hit a businessman on the head with a rock
and stolen his briefcase. In March 2010, he was convicted of assault, mischief and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose – also in Victoria – and received a 60-day conditional sentence of house arrest and one year of probation. Nuttall and Korody appeared in Surrey provincial court Tuesday and make their next appearance July 9. Victoria was the site of at least one terrorist plot in the past, the Millennium Bomber plot in 2000. Ahmed Ressam, an Algerian member of Al-Qaida, assembled bomb materials while staying at a Vancouver motel, then loaded them in the trunk of his car and travelled to Victoria. Ressam attempted to enter the U.S. on the MV Coho ferry from Victoria to Washington, but he was arrested by U.S. border security at Port Angeles.

Make the most of summer job money Tips to help your kids with their first tastes of financial freedom An early wake-up call is best How your youngster will handle money as an adult depends on the habits he or she has learned from you growing up. Start early by motivating your youngster to become a regular saver and investor by setting a good example to follow.
DAVID L. BROWN Managing YOUR MONEY You’re the parent of a youngster with a firsttime summer job – and that means he or she will be enjoying a brand new income stream. But what streams in can quickly stream out without good money management skills. Here are a few tips to help make the most of your youngster’s summer job money.
Immediate enjoyment isn’t best It’s tough to resist pervasive advertising and the ‘gotta have it’ emotion – but explain to your youngster that effective money management starts with always controlling expenses so they don’t exceed income. Help them create a realistic budget with measurable and attainable goals.
Get right with the CRA If your youngster’s job results in a T4 (statement of remuneration paid that is issued by an employer) he or she should file an income tax return because even if their income is below taxable levels, they will start accumulating RRSP room that can be carried forward indefinitely. If your child is 19, he or she should also apply for the GST/HST credit on each tax return and will probably be eligible for quarterly GST/HST credit cheques. Take advantage of tax relief available to students1 Scholarships and bursaries are not taxable when the student is entitled to claim the Education Tax
Credit. Interest paid on a student loan is eligible for a tax credit when the loan is part of a federal or provincial student loan program. Moving expenses are also a tax deduction if the student moves more than 40 kilometres to be closer to school or to take a summer job. Available tax credits can include the Canada Employment Credit, tuition fees for approved study course, an Education amount for each month of enrolment, a textbook credit, and a Public Transit Pass Credit. Obey the 10 per cent rule Explain that he or she will enjoy a much richer tomorrow by always saving
10 per cent of their takehome pay. By doing so, he or she takes full advantage of the miracle of compound interest. Use this dramatic example: Invest $1 a day for 40 years at a five per cent interest rate and they’ll have about $44,000.2 Now is the time to put your youngster on the path to a comfortable financial future. Sometimes an external informed opinion can help – so give your professional advisor a call. Information in this article is based on federal rules only. Provincial and territorial rules may differ. 2 The rate of return is used only to illustrate the effects of the compound growth rate and is not 1

Church tax exemption leads council briefs By Michael Potestio THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Places of worship get property tax exemption Last Tuesday, city council unanimously passed a resolution requesting the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to issue an order pursuant to section 315.3 of the Local Government Act. This will give Merritt’s city council the authority to write off property taxes totaling just over $18,000 — $10,000 of which is the City of Merritt Municipal Tax — for a group of churches missed in 2012 for 2013 permissive tax exemptions. This group consists of the Seventh-Day Adventist; Merritt Baptist Church; Merritt Sikh Society; Merritt Crossroads Community Church; Nicola Valley Evangelical Free Church; Fraser Basin Property Society; United Church Trustees; Roman Catholic Bishop
of Kamloops and Trustees Merritt Jehovah’s Witnesses. The two types of property tax exemptions are statutory and permissive. Statutory exemptions involve the building and the land beneath it. Permissive exemptions pertain to
the land surrounding the building by council. Historically, the City of Merritt exempted the additional property and land for the churches listed above. Those properties were missed on the report for exemption from taxation in 2013.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS
“When wildlife and nature lose, so do humans” OTHMAR VOHRINGER The OUTDOORSMAN How many of you can remember the time during the 1960s when news from around the world of eagles and other birds of prey falling dead from the sky terrified us? After much research, it was found that the then-commonly used insecticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was the culprit. The highly toxic insecticide was not only deadly to insects but every other animal that ate insects, such as frogs, songbirds, fish and others. The birds of prey in turn ate the songbirds, frogs and fish. It was a deadly chain reaction all the way up the food chain. DDT also made its way into our food and scientists quickly found that DDT caused birth defects and cancer, among other illnesses. The outcome of the DDT aftermath re-
‘‘
search and how it affected nature, wildlife and humans caused an international outcry and started the “global environmental movement.” Eventually, after much political wrangling, DDT was internationally outlawed as an insecticide. Public opinion put a stop to the global poisoning — or at least that is what we all thought. Jump forward from the 1960s to 2013 and we are in a new crisis. Again, we hear news from around the globe of fast-declining honeybee populations and more recently of songbirds, frogs, salamanders and other small critters which at one time were plentiful but are now vanishing fast. Again, the liberal use of pesticides is blamed for the decline of these animal populations. But what about larger animals such as our moose and mule deer populations right here in British Columbia? Are they too affected by the use of pesticides and other chemicals in the agriculture industry or are these animals the victim of the much-hyped “global

warming” effects? Not the latter, if we are to go by what scientists say. We had global warming and global cooling before with little effect on wildlife. Animals, like humans, are very adaptable to climatic changes. What wildlife cannot adapt to is the poisoning of the food sources and the rapid loss of habitat. Both of these are plaguing our wildlife populations. DDT is outlawed but there are still tons of other equally deadly chemicals and poisons sprayed every day of the year all across the world, not to mention the genetically manipulated crop seeds killing every other plant growing nearby and insects eating from the plant. Habitat loss occurs at a staggering pace. No matter how much we insist that we are environmentally conscious and how many

laws and taxes we create in the name of “environmental consciousness,” when push comes to shove, we humans are not willing to forsake a new highway, shopping mall, golf course, housing project or the extraction of renewable resources in the name of progress, prosperity and economic success. For as long as humans strive to make life easier with more gadgets and gizmos, bigger houses, easier access to shopping, more transportation networks and more use of renewable resources, wildlife will always be drawing the shorter straw. No matter how much we might believe ourselves to be above it all, we are an intricate part of nature and without it we’re as doomed as the honeybee. When wildlife and nature lose, so do humans. To think otherwise is simply foolish.

Stretching helps soothe, prevent leg cramps
‘‘
DR. COLIN GAGE Spinal COLUMN Have you ever been sleeping soundly or quietly relaxing on the couch after a hard day at work only to be jolted awake by a painful leg cramp? Well, you are not alone. Nearly everybody has experi-
enced a painful leg cramp at some point in his or her life. Just to make things more complicated, there may be different reasons why a leg cramp can occur. For example, pregnant women seem to be prone to muscle cramps because the needs of the developing baby throw off their balance of body fluids. As well, people who exercise for long periods of time or very intensely will throw off their balance of
‘The most common reason I see for leg cramps occurring in my patients is a simple lack of stretching the muscles.’ — HEALTH COLUMNIST DR. COLIN GAGE
water, sodium, potassium, lactic acid, and glucose, which affects muscle contractions and can result in painful muscle cramps. The most common reason I see for leg cramps occurring in
my patients is a simple lack of stretching the muscles. If you have severe leg pain, you should get a professional opinion to determine if what you feel is just an ordinary muscle
cramp. If you suspect the pain is caused by something else, like a blood clot, see your medical doctor or chiropractor immediately. They will examine the area and make the appropriate referral for more diagnostic testing if needed. This is a brief description of what typical muscle cramps should feel like: They are usually in the leg or foot, and occur during rest or sleep. The cramps do not occur in both legs at
Refresh summer staples with grapes (NC)—Tired of the same old caesar salad? Need a new smoothie idea? More nutrition and freshness in a tuna sandwich? A topping to perk up your morning granola? Fresh grapes are the answer. Juicy, sweet, and crisp, grapes from California are perfect on their own. However, they are also an easy add-in ingredient to rejuvenate tried and true recipes and meals. Not only do they come in vibrant hues of green, red and black, but each variety has a taste and texture all its own. And here’s another bonus: grapes contain antioxidants and other beneficial polyphenols that help contribute to heart health and possibly reduce the risk of other agerelated diseases. Whole grapes make favourite salads more lively and colourful, whether they are homemade or from take-out. Traditional green, the classic caesar, a favorite slaw – the list goes on — benefit greatly from the addition of the
sweet-tart flavour of grapes. Besides complementing the main ingredients in salads, grapes go with just about any dressing from ranch to balsamic to blue. Tuna, chicken or turkey salad sandwiches are healthier and fresher with the addition of grapes and a welcome change of pace from the everyday. Halving the fruit is sometimes the best way to use them in a sandwich mix. Even when halved, grapes retain their juiciness without releasing unwanted liquid into the mix. For a breakfast or afterschool smoothie, just toss whole grapes into a blender with other ingredients. The result is a naturally sweet and colourful, energy-filled drink that contains all the healthful benefits of the fruit. Grapes go well with so many recipes because they complement a variety of other flavours: spicy, salty, nutty, fruity and vinaigrettetart, to name just a few. The
crisp, juicy texture and delicate sweetness are responsible for this versatility in the kitchen. Succulent grapes help cool the heat of spicy foods and balance the salty flavors of other ingredients such as bacon, soy sauce or cheese such as feta. The natural sweetness helps balance a vinaigrette. Grapes go wonderfully in a cream sauce for fish, a stuffing for poultry, a simple sauce for pork or beef and any curry in your recipe files. All you have to do is add them in. Nearly all the table grapes that come to Canada are from California, which has the perfect climate for growing luscious clusters of green, red and black varieties. The California fresh grape season is long, too: harvest begins in May and lasts into January. That guarantees you’ll have plenty of these versatile fruits to add in anytime. www.newscanada.com

the same time. The muscle often twitches for a few seconds before and after the cramp. Intense pain comes on suddenly and is usually relieved by standing on or stretching the leg or foot. A knot in the muscle is often seen or felt. Sometimes the affected muscle is tender for a few days. For a select few people, it may not be possible to prevent these cramps completely. However, for the average person, the cramps
will decrease in severity and how often they occur if the affected muscles are stretched regularly. It would also help if you drink enough water during and after exercising to replace what you lost as sweat. Ordinary muscle cramps cause no permanent harm. However, if symptoms persist or you think that the pain is not just a muscle cramp, have it examined by a medical doctor or chiropractor right away.

BCHL leads all Canadian Junior A leagues with seven selections By Ian Webster THE HERALD

Merritt hockey player Dane Birks is now officially a member of the storied Pittsburgh Penguins hockey organization. Birks, 17, was selected in the sixth round, 164th overall, by the Pens at the 2013 NHL entry draft, held on Sunday in Newark, New Jersey. The promising, young Merritt Centennials’ defenceman, who was ranked 121st amongst North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting going into the draft, first heard the news of his selection while at a family gathering at his grandparents’ ranch, located 20 km west of Merritt near Spius Creek. “We all got together to watch the draft,” Birks said. “My parents were there, my grandparents, my aunt and uncle. We put the TV outside and had a barbeque and played games. About five o’clock, we started watching the draft seriously. As the fourth and fifth rounds went by, we started getting a little nervous. “At the beginning of the sixth round, even before it was announced on TV, I got a phone call from [former Merritt Centennial] Bill Mukalt congratulating me on being selected by Pittsburgh. Then
we watched it on the television. It was a great moment.” Asked how Mukalt managed to scoop network television in breaking the news, Birks said that his future coach at Michigan Tech was right at the draft in New Jersey and phoned him the moment he got wind of Pittsburgh’s imminent selection. “Then my agent, Shane Corston, phoned me,” Birks said, “and then [Cents’ head coach and GM] Luke Pierce phoned. It was pretty crazy.” Birks’ selection by the Penguins caught the six-foot three-inch, 190pound blueliner a little bit by surprise. “I knew that they were interested in me,” he said. “I had met with them in Kamloops back in May, but as the draft got closer, it was mostly Montreal and New Jersey who seemed more serious about things.” Pierce wasn’t at all surprised by Pittsburgh’s selection of Birks. “Of the five [NHL] teams that I had been receiving calls from, they were probably the one I talked to the most,” the Cents’ coach said. “Dane is a terrific player, both offensively and defensively. I think that he’s going to an excellent organization with a proven track record of success and a history of developing good, young players.” Birks is one of six
players chosen by Pittsburgh in this year’s NHL draft, and one of three from the ranks of Canadian Junior A hockey. The other two are Blaine Byron (sixth round, 179th) from Smith Falls, Ont. and Troy Josephs (seventh round, 209th) from Whitby, Ont. Other draft selections by the Penguins were goaltender Tristan Jarry (second round, 44th) from the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings, Jake Guentzel (third round, 77th) from Sioux City of the USHL, and American prep player Ryan Segalla (fourth round, 119th). Penguins’ assistant director of amateur scouting Randy Sexton had this to say about his team’s draft picks this year: “We’re delighted with the players we have. We think we have a good mix of positional players with some centres, some D and a potential starting goalie.” With respect to Birks, Sexton said, “Dane is a good-sized defenceman. We like the upside that he has. He skates well, moves the puck well, and is physical in his own way. He’s one of those players that needs a little bit more time but obviously going the college route, he’ll get it.” Birks was contacted directly by Pittsburgh on Tuesday morning. “The assistant GM, Tom Fitzgerald, called
and welcomed me to the organization,” the recent Merritt Secondary School graduate said. “He asked me what it felt like to be a Pen. I told him that it was very overwhelming, almost mind-blowing, and that I couldn’t be happier to be going to an organization like the Penquins.” Birks can’t wait to get his summer of training started — a summer that includes a one-week development camp in Pittsburgh beginning July 15. “It runs from Monday to Saturday, with lots of on-ice and off-ice sessions. There’ll be about 35 of us [prospects] in total. I’m more than a little excited.” To prepare for the Pens’ development camp and for the upcoming BCHL season, Birks plans to spend the bulk of the next five weeks in Minnesota, skating and training with a group of established professional hockey players. “It’s a training camp that includes a bunch of NHL players, as well as trainers and a nutritionist,” Birks said. “I’ll be staying with one of my dad’s buddies.” Birks knows the road ahead to a possible career in the NHL is a huge one, but he is ready and willing to make the necessary sacrifices. “It’s a difficult path, that’s for sure,” he said, “but I’m going to keep

Three Merritt softball teams will be on the road this weekend, competing at their respective provincial championships. The Merritt U16 bantam boys, spon-
sored by Hub Electric, and the U12 squirt boys and girls will be in Clearwater, while the Merritt Pride U16 bantam girls travel to Chilliwack. This is the first time in memory that Merritt has had three local softball teams attend the

B.C. Championships in the same year. All three Merritt teams have had to play extensively out of town in order to get in enough games to prepare for provincial-level competition. The squirts, for example, have been
playing regularly against Princeton. “It’s actually been a very good experience,” said head coach Jessica Culbertson. “Princeton has an all-boys’ team so they’ve proven to be tough competition.” The bantam boys, coached by Cliff Colter

and Earl Nygaard, went as far as 100 Mile to get in some quality ball. “We played a doubleheader against Williams Lake who are also going to Provincials,” Colter said. “We won the first game 17-16 and lost the second 7-6.” The bantam girls
team is the only one that has been competing in any semblance of a league. In their most recent outing, they swept two out of three games against Kamloops, winning 7-6 and 12-8, and losing 8-5. Both of Merritt’s
bantam teams have been allowed to pick up additional players for the provincials. The boys’ team has three players from Clearwater on the roster, while the girls’ side has added a trio of players from Kamloops to complete their line-up.
Aabye sizzles in Beach 10K win; Glendinning and Young shine for B.C.; junior golfers in the mix By Ian Webster

Three local runners finished in the top 15 overall at the annual Canada Day Beach Run 10K in Penticton on Monday. Leading the way, as has become a common occurrence this running season, was 35-year-old Hans Aabye of Merritt who placed first with a winning time of 35 minutes and one second. Not too far behind in the field of 192 finishers was 61-year-old Bruce Wark who placed 11th overall and first in his age group (M60-64) in a time of 42:05. Completing the trio of top performances by Nicola Valley runners was the 15th. place finish by Marie-Josee Bedard. She was the third woman overall across the line, and the top runner in her age group (F40-44) with a time of 44:07. “It was pretty brutal
Hans Aabye
out there,” Aabye said of the racing conditions that saw a temperature of 29 degrees at the start time of 8:30 a.m. “By the end, it was more survival than anything. “The race starts off all right, but then there are a series of climbs,” Aabye described. “By the time you finish those climbs, you’re about ready to pack it in. The final few kilometres, I was really digging.” The Penticton run was probably one of Aabye’s last as a resident of Merritt. The WalMart assistant manager has been transfered to
West Kelowna and will be moving in the next couple of weeks. “It’s been in the works for awhile,” he said. “It’s hard leaving a town like Merritt. So much good has happened to me here.” That said, Aabye is looking forward to his new base of operations. “We have a real strong training group over there. I’m actually a member of the Okanagan Running Club.” Aabye, this year’s points leader in the Interior Running Association’s road racing series, will do the Midsummer 8K run in Kelowna this weekend before moving up to some longer races. “I’ll probably do the Kamloops marathon at the end of July. Then I’m going to enter a 120-mile trail run from Keremeos to Manning
Park in August. You have 48 hours to finish. I’m always signing up for these wild and crazy things.”
Former MSS rugby players star for B.C. Merritt Secondary School graduates Haley Glendinning and Emily Young were both members of the British Columbia senior rugby team that placed third at the National Women’s League championships in Vancouver on the weekend. The B.C. team competed in the Premier Division against provincial sides from Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. The NWL championship is the premier domestic competition for women’s rugby in Canada. It is seen as a vital step on the pathway for aspiring national team players.
Haley Glendinning (left) and Emily Young
After losing its first two games, 18-17 to Alberta and 43-25 against Quebec, B.C. rebounded to upset Ontario, last year’s national champions, by a score of 34-20 on Sunday. When not competing provincially, Glendinning, 21, plays rugby for the University of British Columbia and the Burnaby Rowing Club, while Young, 26, also suits up for BRC and for Kamloops.
Junior golfers in contention in Revelstoke A pair of young Merritt golfers are competing in the B.C. Junior Boys’ Championship this week at the Revelstoke Golf Club. The two, 17-yearold Adam Yasunaga and 16-year-old Ben McNiven are among 156 players (18 and under) taking part in the four-day, 72-hole strokeplay tournament. The top three finishers at the B.C. Junior Championship will represent British
Columbia at the 2013 Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship, being hosted by Timberwolf Golf Club, July 30-Aug. 2 in Garson, Ont. Both Yasunaga and McNiven put themselves in early contention with opening rounds of 77 and 78 on Tuesday of this week. The two players were still on course Wednesday at the Herald’s publication deadline. This weekend, the Merritt Golf and Country Club hosts the Coquihalla Ladies Open from Friday through to Sunday.

Antonio Cavaliere July 1, 1942 - June 28, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Antonio Cavaliere on Friday, June 28, 2013 with his best friend and wife Assunta by his side. Tony was born July 1st, 1942 in Pizzoferrato, Italy. After serving three years in the Italian military, Tony married the love of his life in April 1965 and arrived in Merritt June of that year, to join two of his brothers. Tony and Assunta had three children Trieste, Giorgio and Maria. Tony worked for the local sawmills before settling in at Craigmont Mines where he worked for 14 years. He then moved on to Highmont Mines and Blackdome until his retirement in 1987. Tony was a devoted husband, father and loving nonno to his grandchildren, always eager to care for them when asked. He could be found spending hours working on his immaculate garden and carefully pruning his many fruit trees in the yard. When he wasn’t working outside, you could find Tony inside, watching his favourite channel, the Game Show Network, but he was the biggest wrestling fan. Before the onset of cable TV, Tony often hosted gatherings to watch matches as he was one of the first of his friends to have a colour TV. Tony will be missed by his family and friends for his loving hand, big smile and warm heart, for never complaining and always being there to lend a hand. Tony and Assunta loved spending time with their dearest friends, Mario and Maria, and Gaetano and Concetta. They would often engage in heated games of bocce or briscola where arguments could sometimes be heard down the block. The great love and respect Tony and Assunta had for each other allowed them to navigate the many ups and downs of marriage with grace and dignity. Tony is survived by his two sons Trieste (Lindsay) and Giorgio, five grandchildren Valerie Smith, Jensen, Miranda, Luc and Addy Cavaliere and one great grandchild Chloe Licciardi. Nine siblings Fred (Anna), Joe (Albina), Fiore (Maria), Elisabetta (Joe) Marino, Maria (Antonio) Martella, Silvana Pasquarelli, Vittorio, Graziella (Rocco) Pietropaolo, Remo (Yolande), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Tony is now at peace in Heaven, alongside his beloved daughter Maria Genova, his parents Valerio and Gemma, sister Angela Di Poccio, brothers-in-law Antonio Di Poccio and Raffaele Pasquarelli, and sisterin-law Shirley Cavaliere. A prayer vigil will be held at Sacred Heart Parish, Wednesday, July 3 at 7 pm. Funeral mass also at Sacred Heart, Thursday, July 4 at 11 am. Immediately following, Tony will be laid to rest at Pineridge Cemetery. Following the graveside service Assunta and her sons would like to extend an invitation to join them at the Sacred Heart Hall for a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We would like to thank all of our family, friends and staff of NVGH for their support and comfort, and what a blessing to uncle Tony that his niece, Angelina Cavaliere, ERN was able to be part of his care team. Tony’s favourite line was “I no go.” We know you will always remain with us.
