multiple colours of spray paint as well as felt marker and even chalk. McIntosh said the RCMP is still cataloguing the total number of incidents. “There’s an extensive list of buildings that have been vandal-

Big fine for speed A 25-year-old Port McNeill man can think about the consequences of excessive speeding…while riding the bus. The man’s 2013 Subaru 20R was impounded for seven days and he was fined $483 after being caught doing twice the posted speed limit near Campbell River

on the Highway 19. The car was doing 221 kilometres an hour in a 110 kilometre zone, before passing an intersection where the speed dropped to 90 kilometres an hour. “Adding to the danger was the high volume of traffic at the time, and windy weather conditions,”

said Const. Ingrid Calibaba in a news release. Motorists across Vancouver Island are reminded that traffic officers will be out in force this summer. If you observe a vehicle driving in a dangerous manner, record the license plate, location, direction of travel, and then call police.

David Cox at the start of his third Van Isle End to End to endMS bike ride. Christine van Reeuwyk

End to end to end MS Christine van Reeuwyk Black Press David Cox of Victoria spent part of Canada Day in Port Hardy. But if you blinked, you may have missed him. Cox, 68, embarked Friday on a 10-day, solo bike ride that will take him from his front door to the North Island and back again in a bid to end Multiple Sclerosis. It is the third unsupported Van Isle End to End to end MS for Cox. “I get to start off going down a hill,” the Colwood man said indicating his steep driveway. “Really, the idea was to start at home and end at home.” He reached the turnaround point in Port Hardy during the town’s Canada Day celebration Monday. He started Monday morning in Woss and rode north, then promptly turned around and pedalled to Alder Bay Campground, just south of Port McNeill. The rider resumed his return journey the next morning. This is actually Cox’s 20th year of cycling. At first the thenTorontonian was just “looking for a good organized bike ride”. The next year it got personal,

when his niece was diagnosed with MS. Within six months she was confined to a wheelchair. Cox organized a dynamic team of RBC fundraising riders and now is in his 19th year of MS bike rides. “I’m going to raise money — that’s gravy,” he said. “It keeps the whole concept that this disease does not have a cure and make people aware of it.” When he retired to B.C. in 2005, Cox continued to ride fundraisers and raise awareness, spending three years on the board for the MS Society’s South and Central Island chapter. In 2009, he started the Island-wide ride that became bi-annual after an injury in 2010. The idea is to put his own “blood, sweat and tears” into the effort. “There’s a lot of competing charities out there looking for dollars,” he explained. So Cox packed his 40 pounds of baggage on his 28-pound bike and headed out of Colwood to make his way to Port Hardy and back to Shawnigan in time for the Cowichan Valley Grape Escape MS ride that starts July 6. “My objective is to always get back for that,” he said. “I go to

the (Shawnigan Lake) school, set up my tent and I’m ready to go in the morning.” He’ll do the two-day tour then head home to the West Shore. The primary goal is awareness and respect, he feels is lacking in day-to-day life, illustrated by a visit to his niece Leslie a few months ago. “I was astounded at the rudeness of people who made her stop, made her get out of the way,” he said of his wheelchairbound relative. “It’s important for people to recognize there’s folks out there who don’t have the quality of life we have. If they want to make a donation, all the better.” He’s nearing his current fundraising goal of $3,000. “If it looks like it will be exceeded, I bump it up again,” he explained. “Seems better to have an objective that is harder to obtain than one that is easily exceeded.” To donate visit www.msbiketours.ca and use the “find a cyclist or team” option. Visit endMS.ca MSbiketours.ca for more about the cause and fundraisers. With files from the North Island Gazette.

Flying the flag for whale awareness Gazette staff Around northern Vancouver Island, killer whales, also known as orcas, are a common sight. The two populations of killer whales that occur in these waters; northern residents and transients (recently re-named Biggs killer whales) are both considered threatened under the Species at Risk Act. These populations are small and suffer from limited quantity and quality of available prey. Noise such as that created by vessel traffic is thought to interfere with the orcas’ ability to locate and catch their prey. Additionally, several killer whales are known to have been hit and consequently killed by fast-moving

vessels over the years. Humpback whales are also a threatened species that is common off northern Vancouver Island. Just last month, a Campbell River resident was seriously injured when his vessel collided with a humpback whale in Johnstone Strait. Such situations are sometimes unavoidable but in other cases they can be avoided by slowing down, maintaining a diligent lookout and altering course as necessary. Because of the risks to local whale populations that are already threatened, members of the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship A s s o c i a t i o n (NIMMSA) have recently initiated the

Slow down for safety

I like to talk about road safety with people I meet because it often ends up producing a good topic for these articles. Recently, I stopped to speak with the road maintenance contractor operating the mower clearing the shoulder of the roads in my neighbourhood. He was quick to offer three observations: heed the signs, keep your distance and wait behind when there is oncoming traffic. “You were a constable,” he said. “You know exactly what I mean about signs. I’ve had drivers stop to scream at me and give me the finger because there was no warning of the mower. I’d love to tell them to go back and have another look because the signs are there. If you see one, be careful because I often cannot put them as close to the mower as I would like to.” The contractor told me that cyclists are a bigger headache than

most traffic. They pass by the mower with what seems only inches to spare. “If I have to move left to avoid a sign or obstacle they would be under the wheels in an instant,” he said. “There was one once that I don’t know how I avoided squashing. I had to move and he was right beside me! “I don’t know what many drivers are thinking. They come up behind me and swing out to the left to go by with oncoming traffic in the lane they are moving into! There’s even a sign to remind them to yield to oncoming traffic on the back of the mower. Everyone is in a hurry and they won’t even wait a few seconds for safety’s sake.” Tim Schewe is a retired constable with many years of traffic enforcement experience. Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa), is the only plant food that contains all ten essential amino acids. Quinoa is actually a seed of a grain-like crop related to beets. It’s cooked like rice and is a nutritionally-sound food source to add to your diet. The Mediterranean diet seems to be the best for a long healthy life. Imagine a pyramid with the widest bottom part listing fruits, vegetables, grains, olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes and seeds (like Quinoa). The next level up contains fish and seafood. Above that is poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt. And at the very top and smallest part of the pyramid: meats and sweets. Our kidneys’ job is to filter our blood. They filter about 40 gallons of fluid every day. They hold back substances your body needs and lets the rest go out in the urine. High blood pressure or diabetes can damage the kidneys and if not controlled can result in kidney failure. During the hot days of summer, it’s important to keep hydrated. About 90% of our body’s cooling comes from the evaporation of sweat from our skin. During heavy exertion in hot weather, we can lose two or more litres of water in an hour. Keep your water consumption up to prevent dehydration. There are many summer ailments that can make our lives miserable. It may be sunburn, allergies, poison ivy, insect bites or simple diarrhea from eating too much fruit. Our pharmacists are always available for advice on the best treatment.

who did this crime have also vandalized the beautifully painted Hydro boxes at the waterfront,” town councillor Gaby Wickstrom posted on Facebook. “Heather Brown poured hours of work and her heart into painting those works of art. You should be ashamed of yourselves!” Many of the tags remained Monday at other locations, including the Visitors Information Centre sign, as Canada Day

activities took place nearby at Gate House Community Theatre. The local CIBC bank building and Coastal Community Credit Union, which face each other across Broughton Boulevard, were both tagged, along with the Peoples Drug Mart mall. No value in “tagging’ Art can be found in many places beyond high-toned galleries and small-town gift shops. The England-based street artist Banksy has earned critical acclaim for his subversive works of political and social graffiti, even to retroactive approval and preservation of what began as unauthorized works. His art is both visually compelling and thought-provoking, even if not always welcome by the owners of the buildings he chooses for his “canvas”. California protester Jeff Olson also sought to spark dialogue when he scrawled anti-bank messages on sidewalks in front of several big-bank branches in Southern California. Despite the fact he wrote his protest in washable sidewalk chalk, Olson was hauled into court on multiple vandalism charges before being found not guilty by a jury earlier this week. What happened in Port McNeill over the Canada Day weekend, however, is something altogether different. The tagging in spray paint of numerous buildings, both public and private, was not only wanton, but repetitive and uninteresting. Its only message was an expression of contempt for community. Its imagery, a willful stain on the fabric of society. Sure, a bank and credit union were hit, but the mostly indecipherable tag bore little resemblance to Olson’s chalked “No thanks, big banks.” And why the medical clinic? The school? The tourism centre? If this was a protest, it was a protest against all facets of life on the North Island and the people who live here. Good luck rounding up support for that cause, pal. The only dialogue you’ve sparked is a wholehearted agreement that you be caught and made to pay.

Clark resumes Campbell arrogance VICTORIA – Call it the Beach Blanket Budget. Despite having to campaign once again to win a seat in a byelection, Premier Christy Clark has ordered the legislature to sit without her through most of July to pass the budget that was tabled before the election. The standard schedule, put in place under former premier Gordon Campbell, calls for MLAs to assemble in October and November, to consider legislation, after a spring devoted to the budget and ministry spending. This was a serious reform that went along with fouryear scheduled elections. But Campbell soon abandoned this noble approach, with fall sessions dwindling to a few days to deal with urgent issues or disappearing altogether. I expected Clark to reverse that after she led the party to victory in May and consigned the Campbell era to the history books. Open, accountable government

and all that. So why the summer session? I’m inclined to agree with NDP house leader John Horgan, who meets privately with Liberal Mike de Jong in his role of government house leader to thrash out schedules. Here’s Horgan’s message to Clark and her government as he emerged from the latest meeting: “You ran on a platform that you claimed you were ready to implement. But the proposal to keep the increase in overall spending to less than two per cent, with nearly all the increase going to health and education, is difficult to accept. During his time, Campbell topped the Fraser Institute’s ranking of most fiscally responsible premiers, limiting spending growth to 4.4 per cent. During those same years, average provincial economic growth was only 4.1 per cent, meaning that under the supposedly tight-fisted, tax-cutting Campbell, government continued to grow to more than 20 per cent of G.D.P. election win that she intends to make government smaller. This is why I mentioned last week that one of the more significant instructions given to Clark’s cabinet ministers was to examine turning the Liquor Distribution Branch into a separate corporation with its own board of directors. That in itself may slightly increases the size of government. But it could be a preliminary step to selling the whole thing off and reducing the government’s role to taxing and regulating booze sales. You can imagine how that would go over with the NDP, with former liquor store union boss George Heyman among the loudest opposition MLAs. This is the kind of change that should be debated in public, not by press release. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@ blackpress.ca

Stay safe in the summer sun Dear editor, Summer is finally here for Vancouver Island, and the Vancouver Island Health Authority would like to remind you about some important sun and heat safety tips. Excessive exposure to the sun can cause serious illness such as sun stroke and heat exhaustion. The sun’s rays can also damage skin, particularly over years of exposure. Here are some tips so everyone can enjoy the sun safely: • Seek shade and keep

skin covered as much as possible when spending time in the sun. The sun can burn and damage skin even on a cloudy day. • Wear a hat with a wide brim. • Children are more vulnerable to sun damage and heatstroke, so ensure their skin is protected or in the shade. Infants under 6 months should wear a UVA/UVB protective suit if spending time outdoors. • Apply sunscreen early and often with a minimum Sun Protection Factor

Dear Vancouver Island MLA’s and MP’s, As Canada’s birthday approaches we are reminded that the first parliamentary body to represent voters in British North America west of the “Province of Canada” (Ontario), was the Legislative Assembly of Vancouver Island, elected more than 150 years ago in 1856. With this parliamentary governance in mind we have begun to circulate petitions that request the federal Government of Canada, and the provincial Government of British Columbia, initiate discussions with respect to the proclamation of the Province of Vancouver Island. Our rich heritage, diverse and resilient coastal communities, as well as our renewable resources and

industrial infrastructure, enable a strong and resilient economy. In short, Vancouver Island has all the attributes and prerequisites to be a Province. As such, this initiative is a natural next step in our development, as well as an important part of our Island heritage — contributing to Canada’s birth and dominion, “from East to Western sea”. This initiative, entirely non-partisan and non-profit, will stimulate cooperation and pride of Islanders as well as strengthen and solidify partnerships with British Columbia and within Canada. Confederation grows with the proclamation of the Province of Vancouver Island. Best wishes, Laurie Gourlay Co-ordinator, VI Province

(SPF) of 30 to exposed skin at least 15-30 minutes prior to going out. Use it liberally and make sure to reapply often throughout the day, especially following swimming or heavy perspiration. • Wear sunglasses, especially when driving or cycling. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (rays) can cause cataracts and other eye diseases. • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours of sun (10am – 4pm). • Drink plenty of fluids,

but avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can be dehydrating. • Keep your body cool – dress in light weight and loose fitting clothing that covers most of your body. • Never leave children in a car unattended - vehicles sitting in the heat can reach temperatures that can be fatal within just a few minutes. Thanks, and have a great summer! Val Wilson VIHA communications manager

North Island Life

Happy 146th Canada Gazette staff Early predictions of record high temperatures for Canada Day were a little over-optimistic it turns out. But it was more than nice enough for the crowds who came together across the North Island to celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday.

From pig roasts to karaoke, water balloons to plane rides, there was something for everyone this long weekend as each community carried on traditions and started some afresh. Here’s a few scenes from the celebrations...

Clockwise from above left: The Coal Harbour Ceilidh Band perform at the Community Centre; Alex Alfred hoists the flag in Port Hardy; The colour guard of Legion members, RCMP and Rangers line up in preparation for the National Anthem at Carrot Park; Moriah Purdy and Bethany Waines fly the flag at Port McNeill Airport; a water balloon escapes the clutches of Brooke Neely during kids games at Lion’s Park in Port Alice; Port McNeill Mayor Gerry Furney chats with Jaxson Rutherford at the airport; Spencer Smith leads Jaylen Ager and Kianna Schmidt in the sack race in Port Alice; the crowd at the Coal Harbour Canada Day celebrations gather for the raising of the flag. Cubs hang on, win on last play Gazette staff HYDE CREEK—A relay throw from the fence in deep rightcenter field cut down the tying run at the plate for the final out as the Port Hardy Cubs secured a dramatic, 4-3 win over the Port McNeill Rangers in North Vancouver Island League baseball action at the local ballpark June 25. The win gave the Cubs (5-2) two one-run victories in a three-day span, both secured on the final play of the game. The previous Sunday, June 23, Curtis Martyn’s two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Port Hardy to a 5-4 win over the league-leading Hyde Creek Hillbillys. The Rangers trailed 4-2 and had runners at first and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh when Graham Baker launched a drive deep over left fielder Rustin Brown. As Hugh Connon jogged home to bring the Rangers to 4-3, teammate Brandon Proc was waved around to attempt to score from first base on the hit. But Cubs centerfielder Chris Lamothe raced to the fence and fired a throw to infielder Russ Taylor, who relayed it to catcher Rod Romas for a bang-bang tag on

ing to Port Hardy to finish with a weekend split. The league took a break from play for the July Long Weekend and will resume tonight when the Cubs face the Hillbillys at 6:30 p.m. in Hyde Creek.

Hockey camps back at Chilton

Gazette staff The ice is back in at Chilton Regional Arena in Port McNeill, and the next several weeks will be devoted to a series of hockey camps as well as figure skating. The North Island Eagles fun hockey camp is under way this week, through Friday. The following week, Lou Lemire’s Summer Hockey Skills Clinic returns to the arena for a July 8-12 run. Finally, on July 22, Port McNeill-raised pro skaters Clayton Stoner and Benn Olson return with Clayton Stoner’s Summer Hockey Camp. Stoner, a defenseman with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, headlines the camp, presented by Victoria-based Progressive Hockey, with

help from Olson, who skates in the New York Islanders’ organization. A few spots have been released since the initial July 1 registration deadline, said Andy Seppanen of Progressive Hockey, but prompt sign-up is requested by interested skaters. The camp features plenty of on- and off-ice elements and wraps up with a scrimmage complete with player introductions to music and spotlights. Afterward, players can mingle with the camp instructors and collect autographs at the post-camp party. For info or to register, visit www.progressivegoaltending.com and scroll down to click “Port McNeill” under the summer camps listing.

Champions crowned

Gazette staff PORT HARDY—Stephanie Lacasse and Devon Gullacher of Avalon Adventist Junior Academy were presented plaques honouring their accomplishments in the 30th annual Charlie Cup Checkers Championship after helping the school to the team title in late June. Contest sponsor and host David Lyon presented Lacasse, who won the only point from more than 350 entries, the MVP keeper plaque. Gullacher was awarded the Most Inspirational Player plaque. A third winner, Best Sport Judy Charlie of Eagle View Elementary, was not at school the day he came to deliver her prize, and it was left for her at the school. “This was a truly a very well played championship this time around,” said Lyon. “Excellent sportsmanship, too.” The Charlie Cup offers North Island schoolchildren a chance at prizes through a series of checkers games against Lyon at events through the school year. To earn a point for their school, students must sweep Lyon in a five-game series.
