Fire season begins with CFC battling four wildfires in Quesnel region AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter
So fear this season the Cariboo Fire Centre reports there have been a total of 57 wildfires, 43 person-caused and 14 lighting caused, burning 1,064 hectares. July 2, the Wildfire Management Branch aircraft spotted four new lightning-caused wildfires, all within the the Gold Pan City region. The first wildfire is located in the Whiskey Flats area south of Barkerville. An initial attack crew actioned the spot fire (0.009 hectares) with support from a helicopter Tuesday evening, camped overnight near the site and returned the following morning (July 3) to execute mop-up. This fire was also reported by the public. The second wildfire is located between Cariboo Mountain and Yanks Peak south of Swift Lake. The Quesnel-based Blackwater unit crew attempted to hike in to the fire, but were turned back by darkness. The crew returned to the site the following morning to action the fire (0.8 ha). The third wildfire (0.2 ha) is located in the same area. The 20-member Blackwater Unit crew is being split to action these two fires. The fourth wildfire is located three kilometres north of Benson Lake. An initial attack crew actioned the spot fire (0.009 ha) with support from a helicopter on Tuesday evening, camped overnight near the site and returned this morning to execute mop-up.
WMB aircraft was patrolling the region Wednesday, leaving Williams Lake and heading north toward the Cariboo Mountains and west toward Quesnel (counter-clockwise) before returning to the headquarters. There were hundreds, if not thousands of lightning strikes over the long weekend and there’s a possibility of holdovers popping up now that the weather is warmer and drier. The current fire danger rating is moderate throughout most of the Cariboo Fire Centre, with areas of high in the Quesnel area. The Cariboo Mountains region is moderate, but is forecast to rise to high during the weekend. According to Environment Canada, Quesnel set a new heat record at 36.1 degrees on Canada Day (July 1), breaking a record from 1942. The CFC reminds the public there is an open burning prohibition in place, banning any backyard and industrial waste, slash or grass fires, which came into effect on April 15. The CFC would also like to remind the public to be vigilant with any type of fire use, including campfires and to properly and safely extinguish cigarettes. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1-800663-5555 or *5555 on your cellphone. JPC extends Multi deadlines
The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and City of Quesnel will provide North Cariboo residents with a North Cariboo Multi-Centre project update during a public meeting in Quesnel City Hall Council Chambers on Tuesday Sept. 3. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Members of the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee (the CRD’s four northern directors and Quesnel City Council) will be in attendance. Although a deadline of May 31 had been established for the fundraising initiatives, the JPC has reviewed the timeline for the various steps required to borrow the money needed for the project to proceed and has determined that an extension until at least Sept. 3 is possible to allow the fundraising effort to continue throughout the summer. The loan authorization bylaw approved in the referendum will expire Dec. 12, 2013. “The JPC, staff and the Multi-Centre fundraising committee have worked extremely hard to secure funding for this project
“... we need to continue the momentum to fundraise and raise the profile of this project locally, provincially and nationally...” Ted Armstrong, CRD
over the past few years,” stated CRD Vice-Chair, Ted Armstrong. “We have re-assessed our timelines related to the project and feel comfortable with extending our deadlines; we need to continue the momentum to fundraise and raise the profile of this project locally, provincially and nationally in an attempt to secure a funding commitment from senior levels of government.” “My colleagues and I continue to lobby senior levels of government and ensure their representatives are aware of the project and this community’s great eagerness to proceed,” Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom added. “I want to ensure our
residents know we are working on this file and are committed to carrying out the mandate provided during the referendum. I’m excited that we have found some more time to continue our fundraising efforts. We have determined that the community’s vision for the Multi-Centre can still be accomplished with our original $30 million budget and we are committed to making that vision a reality.” At the Joint Planning Committee meeting on June 25, the members released a resolution reaffirming that the Multi-Centre project requires a $30 million budget to proceed. The Committee did not support any reductions to the scope of work on the project. The project budget includes a 1,600-seat arena, 450-seat performing arts theatre and accompanying event and assembly space. The Cariboo Regional District and City of Quesnel still need to secure approximately $5.5 million in funding after North Cariboo taxpayers approved borrowing up to $15 million in the 2008 referendum.

Still stalking the gold
CBC to air Wilds to Riches about legendary Heron Channel, then and now
Top: filming a re-enactment on site; bottom: the Hard-Up Mining Company is trying to recover legendary gold deposits in the Heron Channel.
Contributed photos
It’s August 2012. A small crew of men huddles at the bottom of the enormous hole they’ve been digging since spring thaw. Above them is 50+ metres of worthless gravel. Below them—they hope—is the reason they’re here: the infamous Heron Channel. Using maps and mining reports more than a hundred years old, these thoroughly modern miners are looking for part of an ancient creek bed they believe the original Cariboo Gold Rush was never able to uncover. There’s a reason this ground has been sought after for generations. Exactly 150 years ago, in 1862, a tonneand-a-half of raw placer gold was hauled out of this channel – from just 400 feet of gravel. It is an amount worth nearly $50 million today. Those Victorian miners would have kept going, too, but their channel flooded and the remaining treasure was buried in a soggy grave until someone could invent a more effective way to remove the water.
Now, more than a century later, the Hard-Up Mining Company is digging for what history left behind: a channel they believe still holds a billion dollars worth of gold. They may strike it rich or, like many gold miners before them and since, lose everything in a race to feed their fever. Which will it be? Presented by CBC Television and narrated by CBC Radio One’s Mark Forsythe (“BC Almanac”) Wilds to Riches is a riveting, hour-long documentary following those men and women – from both the 1860s and today – who take tremendous risks while searching for gold in British Columbia’s central interior. “This current gold rush isn’t all that different from the one that built the province,” director-producer Jacy Schindel said. “Gold mining in the Cariboo continues to produce a kind of drama that mirrors the trials and tribulations of the miners who first came to this region more than a hundred years ago.” Focusing its lens on the his-
torical boomtown of Barkerville, Wilds to Riches tells the stories of several legendary Cariboo characters through a series of historical reenactments, photographs and authoritative interviews. These stories intertwine with contemporary narratives as modern miners compare their experiences to the lives of the prospectors who came before them. “With gold trading at near-record dollar values per ounce, people are once again flocking to the Cariboo Goldfields in search of the mother lode,” producerdirector Patrick Curling said. “We’ve been recording the details of this new rush since we started filming nearly four years ago and the results are honestly astonishing.” Wilds to Riches was written by Lisa Johnson and directed by Jacy Schindel and Patrick Curling. It was produced by Patrick Curling, Jacy Schindel, Justin Booth and James Douglas. Wilds to Riches airs in British Columbia on CBC Television’s “Absolutely Vancouver,” July 6 at 9 p.m.

If you’re concerned about social and ethical issues, why not speak out with your investment portfolio? Through socially responsible investing, your portfolio can reflect your values. As an investor, you can support businesses that are doing their part to make the world a better place. Socially responsible investingalso known as ethical investing-is a good way to invest in companies with social, ethical or environmental policies you support. For example, you can invest in businesses that have good environmental track records, or that make environmentally friendly products. You can choose companies that refuse to do business with oppressive governments, and avoid those that do. Or you can steer clear of companies whose products pose health threats. Everybody has their own definition of “socially responsible,” and your take on the subject will guide your strategy. You should think of socially responsible investments as one part of a portfolio that includes a balance of different investment types. Because the universe of socially responsible investing is still relatively small, focussing exclusively on these types of investments is too limiting for most investors. A narrowly focused portfolio can leave you vulnerable to the ups and downs of one investment group, while you miss out on investment opportunities elsewhere. One of the challenges of socially responsible investing is that it can be hard to find acceptable investments on your own. Screening companies to determine whether they meet your criteria can be difficult and time-consuming. You may have to examine a corporation’s structure, its business practices, its history and where and with whom it conducts business. A much easier route is through mutual funds. Canada has a growing selection of funds that seek out socially responsible, ethical and environmental investments. These funds do the screening for you, by picking investments that meet their criteria. Plus, you’ll get the typical benefits of mutual funds-such as ease of investing, professional management and diversification through the selection of individual investments held by each fund. When choosing a fund, be sure its objectives match yours. What’s deemed socially responsible can vary from fund to fund. For example, some funds might focus on companies with an innovative environmental approach. Others may avoid companies connected to industries such as tobacco or gambling. And, as you would with any mutual fund investment, pay attention to the fund’s performance record, its management style, level of risk and other factors that will determine whether a fund has a place in your portfolio. It’s a good idea to meet with an investment professional before making socially responsible investments. Your advisor can help you determine which investments fit with your objectives.

Surrey duo arrested in Canada Day bomb plot in Victoria JEFF NAGEL Black Press
Two Surrey residents accused of planting pressure cooker bombs outside the B.C. legislature on Canada Day are described by police as “Al-Qaeda-inspired” but “self-radicalized.” B.C. RCMP arrested John Stewart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody in Abbotsford at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon after a fivemonth investigation that began in February. The alleged homegrown terror plot is similar to that of the Boston Marathon bombers, who used pressure cooker bombs to send shrapnel through the crowd near the race’s finish line on April 15. RCMP seized three explosive devices made from pressure cookers that contained nails, bolts, nuts and washers that were placed on the legislative assembly
grounds. Nuttall, 38 and Korody, 29, are charged with making or possessing an explosive device, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and knowingly facilitating terrorist activity. “These individuals were inspired by Al-Qaeda ideology,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said. “Our investigation has determined this was a domestic threat without international linkages.” The alleged motive of the two accused is not clear but there is no indication of any connection to Islamic beliefs or religion. The RCMP says the pair “took steps to build explosive devices and place them at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria where crowds were expected to gather on Canada Day.” The legislative lawn and inner harbour were crowded with
an estimated 40,000 revelers for Monday’s Canada Day concert and fireworks. Police aren’t saying if undercover officers were working with the duo but Malizia said they were being closely monitored and police ensured the bombs were inert and could not detonate. “While the RCMP believed this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk,” Malizia said. “We detected the threat early and disrupted it.” The arrests were made after a joint investigation of the RCMP E Division, the Canadian Border Services Agency and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, dubbed Project Souvenir. “I want to reassure our citizens that at all times during the investigation, our primary focus was the safety and protection of the public,” Malizia said.
Nor was the Canada Day crowd in Victoria the only potential target that may have been contemplated. “The suspects were committed to acts of violence and discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout, adding they were “self-radicalized” and aimed to cause “maximum impact to Canadian citizens at the B.C. Legislature on a national holiday.” A variety of covert investigation methods were used to control any method the suspects had to commit
harm, he added. Rideout said the bombs are believed to have been made in Surrey and at other locations in B.C. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said the two alleged terrorists have lived in Surrey for about 18 months and had a transient lifestyle, moving fluidly in the region from Delta to Surrey to Vancouver. She couldn’t say whether the pair had substance abuse issues. She also understands they gathered much of their information about what they were doing from the internet. Korody has no prior

Proud parents

H
aving just returned from a truly memorable trip to Ottawa to see our two sons receive the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery, I’ve had countless people stop me and commend my husband and I on our parenting and even young parents ask how we could have created such outstanding young men. I ponder this question a lot. We raised out children with the usual angst. Questioned decisions we made, argued about the best consequences, how much to indulge, making the tough calls when things go sideways. However, perhaps, for me at least, the most important aspect to parenting was being able to see each of my children as interesting individuals, capable of whatever they put their minds to and of course keeping them busy in a productive, safe activities which engaged them and taught them both practical skills and life lessons. I credit the 4-H program with many of the tools my sons needed for their future. Although that future was sometimes cloudy, sometimes lofty and unattainable but always directed by them. I would support them, offer my advice but try to pull back at the right time, just short of micromanaging. I’m a hoverer. If they have a big decision or a persistant problem, I’m calling just to see how they’re doing. Checking how they’re handling it and that can sometimes get me in trouble but I’ve also always pushed my children to push back if they are really passionate about something. Don’t let others stand in your way, even if that other is your mother. Although not fully formed (I wonder if I’ll ever see that process as complete), they are all following their own paths, forging their own future and making their own decisions. Am I proud of them? To bursting! Am I close to them? We talk twice a week. Do I still worry? Of course. But they are men, proud and strong, smart and capable. What more can parents ask for a legacy. – Annie Gallant, Observer

y cartoonist Jim Hunt says that trying to log off Facebook is like trying to put down a bag of chips. “Okay, just one more post…” If you’re not on Facebook you won’t be able to relate. And if you’re just a passive user, his sentiment will also have little meaning to you. But for someone like me, who uses it quite frequently, Jim’s words ring true. Nevertheless, I certainly wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from signing on to the social media site. Least of all my father, grandmother and in-laws. I’ve been trying to get them to join for years now, and their response has always been the same: no thank you. “Why not?” I’ll ask. “It’s a great way to stay connected with your friends and family.” But they would rather reach out the old-fashioned way, by telephone or email. Selfishly, I want them on Facebook so they’ll be able to communicate with their grandchildren more regularly, and exchange pictures and notes. I’ve explained how simple it is to use, and that you can

On a Brighter Note easily choose your degree of privacy based on your individual settings. But so far I’ve been completely unsuccessful at convincing them to try it. My art of persuasion isn’t completely hopeless though. I have managed to encourage some die-hard Facebook opposers to give it a whirl, and most have enjoyed the benefits and stuck with it. One of those people was my good friend Steve, who’s been a radio personality for decades, and should have opened an account years ago, but never did. “Everyone bugs me to join,” he groaned when I mentioned it. “I just can’t. I know I should, but I’m not into it at all.” Understanding his aversion, since I initially felt the same, I did what
present themselves to him in the future that otherwise wouldn’t. Not wanting to dissuade the more private people like some of my family members, who would be more comfortable keeping their privacy settings tight and their friendship lists exclusive, I will reiterate that both private and public accounts can have tremendous benefits. “I only like to include my inner circle,” my friend Kari said, explaining why she wouldn’t accept friend requests from anyone outside of that. “I want to connect with the people I’m close to, but not the rest of the world.” And that’s exactly how I picture my father, grandmother and inlaws enjoying it. I can’t imagine them becoming addicted, but I can see them ultimately being happy they joined. I know I sure am. If you want to friendship request Steve and welcome him to Facebook, his name on there is Stuntman Stuntman. Not that he’s hiding, but it proves you can if you want to. one of my friends did for me years ago and refused to take no for an answer. I set him up with a profile picture, and made some friend suggestions to get him started. After that he was off like a little kid on his first bike, zooming down the street with a scared but excited look on his face. Steve traveled to Vancouver with his family immediately after joining, and soon experienced firsthand the advantages of signing up when he sat down at a restaurant called Smoke’s Poutine, and posted a picture of himself with the restaurant’s name behind him. “Within a minute of me posting that I got a call from my former boss telling me I was only a block away from his station and to pop by for a visit,” he said. “If it hadn’t been for Facebook, that wouldn’t have happened and I wouldn’t have seen my buddy Drex at his new station.” Like me, Steve’s going to use this particular social media site in an open allinclusive kind of way, as it will be helpful to him and his career. NCJPC rejected all reductions to Multi-Centre Editor: On behalf of the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee (NCJPC), we wish to clarify the June 28 article. reduced, but it did not advise readers that the NCJPC rejected making any of these changes to the project’s scope of work. The consulting firm MHPM was asked to review the project budget and provide the city and CRD with their reassessment of the project’s $30M budget.
They advised in their report, that while there has been some modest escalation in construction costs since the budget was established, it was still valid and the project could be completed ‘on budget’. MHPM were also asked to advise the city and CRD if the project budget could be reduced.
They indicated that, in their professional opinion, the minimum budget required to complete the project was $27.44 M, however in order to meet this budget goal they advised that significant reductions would be required to the scope of work. These reductions were substantial and would
negatively impact the Multi-Centre’s ability to host events and meet the needs of the community and as a result, they were not acceptable to the committee. The Joint Planning Committee released a resolution after the report had been presented reaffirming that the project requires a $30M
budget to proceed. As co-chairs of the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee we are committed to continuing to work hard to make the Multi-Centre vision a reality. Sincerely, Mayor Mary Sjostrom Vice-Chair Ted Armstrong NCJPC Co-Chair

Help when needed Adoption support coordinator Selena Weiers, below, is able to provide support and education for anyone in the adoption process, regardless of what stage they’re at. Annie Gallant and contributed photo
Adoption support available through Families Association of B.C. ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter
S
elena Weiers is the new adoption support coordinator for the North Central Region of Adoptive Families Association of B.C. (AFABC.) Although this is a new responsibility for her she is no stranger to the world of adoption. Weiers is the proud mother of two adopted daughters. With this insight and an optimistic, supportive approach to her new position, Weiers is thrilled to be part of the independent agency designed to offer support and education to those considering adoption or those at any stage of the adoption process. Since 1977, AFABC has been dedicated to finding families for children and also to providing groundbreaking programs that support the entire adoption community. “AFABC’s mission is to promote and support adoption with a great vision of finding a permanent loving family for every child,” Weiers said. “Our province-wide family services ensure adoptive families are educated and supported before, during and long after their children come home.” Each year, hundreds of children and youth join adoptive families across the province. Children who join their family through adoption have typically experience inconsistent care, neglect, abuse, separation, and/ or trauma. These experiences can lead
to a staggering array of potential developmental, behavioural, medical, learning and/or mental health conditions. Children with these experiences can present unique and complex parenting challenges. Families desperately need access to ongoing support throughout their adoption journey to successfully parent the children and youth in their care. One of the many programs designed to offer this type of support is a family camp at Ness Lake Camp, in October. Weiers said as the adoption support coordinator for the Northern Region, she is soliciting support from various organizations to assist families attend the camp. Those who wish to attend can register at www.2013nesslakefamilycamp. eventbrite.com “One of the key challenges with hosting this family event revolves around financial barriers presented by facility rental rates,” Weiers said. “This year’s camp costs $108 for adults and $92 for children. As you can imagine, for families with multiple children in their care, this can be prohibitive and leaves some families unable to participate.” Weiers is looking for community partners to help defray some of the
costs. For as little as a $100, donations from the community can mean the difference for families to connect with other adoptive families, share experiences and build strong support networks in the region. AFABC has several signature programs. In addition to education and support services, they publish a Focus on Adoption magazine and the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program which utilizes two recruiters who focus on finding potential families within a child’s immediate network. The speak-out youth group allows the voices of youth in adoption, or those waiting for adoption to be heard. Weiers also, provides one-to-one support to prospective parents, leads Waiting Child information sessions and coordinates waiting family support groups. Currently, there are 1,243 children and youth in B.C. waiting for their forever families. Defined as legally being accepted and made part of a family they were not born into, adoption is so much more and the journey for both adopted children and youth and waiting families can be long and emotional. “Adoption is a wonderful thing as it makes families and makes dreams come true,” Weiers said. “It’s also a little sad in that there is
a reason why a child is not able to be with his or her birth family. But in this sadness comes great joy. Families are born, not in the traditional sense, but in the hearts of the many people who have so much love to give and who know their family will be introduced to them through paths unknown, but charted with a sense of purpose and love.” AFABC is funded in a number of ways: through a contract with B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development, through corporate and community donations, membership dollars and member donations. AFABC, in partnership with MCFD, is hosting its annual Prince George Adoptive Family Picnic, Sept. 14, 3 – 6 p.m. at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre, 1200 LaSalle Ave. in Prince George. This fun, free afternoon is an opportunity to connect with new people, chat with other adoptive parents, speak out about things that concern you and share what works for you. Attendees are asked to bring a dessert or salad to share, the rest will be provided. Those planning on attending are asked to contact www.pgfamilypicnic2013. eventbrite.com. To find out how you be a part of AFABC and help made a difference or if you are thinking about adopting or are on the journey to adopt and would like support or information contact Weiers by email sweiers@bcadoption.com, call 1-866-303-4591 or visit the website www.bcadopt.com.

Fund Raiser Left: Skip Stewart brings his aerobatic excellence back to Skyfest 2013; right: Dan Buchanan will fly high over Quesnel Airport Aug. 3 – 4. Observer file photos
Skyfest welcomes returning favourites
Skip Stewart considers himself an extreme airshow pilot and audiences at last year’s Skyfest will agree. With more than 8,000 hours of flying experience, Stewart is an airline transport pilot, certified flight instructor, has owned and operated an aerobatic flight school, earned gold medals in regional aerobatic competitions, served as a chief pilot for a Fortune 100 company and has spent more than 10 years entertaining airshow fans around the world. All this in an airplane he built himself. Fans will remember his daring tricks both close to the ground and soaring into the clear blue sky. Prometheus, which means forethought in Greek mythology, started life as a Pitts S-2S, but Stewart modified it to give him the airshow machine he always dreamed of. The plane resembles a good old fashioned hot rod, but with the horsepower increased to 400, the climb rate at a staggering 4,000 fpm, a maximum speed of 197 mph, stall speed of 58 mph and a range of 405 miles, Stewart’s flying machine is an all muscle biplane ready to do daredevil tricks and stunning aerobatics at Quesnel’s International Airshow - Skyfest, Aug. 3 – 4. A tragic spinal injury while landing a hang glider in bad weather left Dan Buchanan a paraplegic but certainly not grounded. Audiences will remember his amazing performance at last year’s Skyfest where he hang-glided his way to the ground
after an incredible show over the Quesnel landscape. Buchanan flies an unpowered hang glider (daytime shows) designed, built and registered with the FAA as experimental aircraft because of the commercial entertainment work he does. Buchanan’s factory-built aircraft are vigorously engineered, stress tested and instruction is mandatory. He also holds a commercial glider pilot license, enjoying sail plan aerobatics and giving glider rides when not on the airshow tour. Many have
wondered about the mechanics of Buchanan’s unique glider launch system, which is mounted on a winch system and rolling launch trailer that he designed and constructed specifically for airshow take-offs. With his tow vehicle driving on the runway, Buchanan lifts off the towed trailer at an air speed of about 30 mph and quickly tow-climbs to an altitude of 1,200 – 1,800 feet. The pay-out winch on the launch vehicle spins out up to 3,000 feet of 1/8” tow-line against the applied brake pressure on the winch during his
ascent. When he released from the towline, a small ram air parachute is automatically deployed and the line is rapidly rewound electrically back onto the winch without the line every falling to the ground. And that’s how Dan Buchanan flies. Tickets for Skyfest are available at Circle ‘S’ Western Wear, Skyfest website and the Tourist Info Centre for weekend passes, day passes and weekend camping packages. For information on Skyfest visit www.quesnelskyfest. ca.

Historical Group is planning Big move
“Next Tuesday is moving day for the Quesnel Historical Society, for that is the day they will transfer their accumulated Historical treasures to the new Museum at Louis LeBourdais Park. Some of the problems which face the group before opening the Museum to the public, were ironed out at a meeting Tuesday evening held at the home of Alvin Johnston, and others were shelved for a further discussion at a later meeting. Changing of the original plans for the Museum and a resultant confusion for successful operation of the building, was brought out by Alderman J.H. Ritchie who told the group that when the solid wall was placed between the Tourist Bureau and the Museum, instead of windows and a turnstile as designated in the planned layout, the effective use of paid help in the Tourist section was lost. With the only entry now being by means of double doors at the front of the Museum, the Society will be completely responsible for the 12 hour, 7 day week that Council has requested for opening hours and the whole 84 hours will have to be worked by volunteers.” This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

Crossfire doused JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Assault doused the Crossfire’s season Tuesday in the third game of the best-offive playoff series in Prince George. With the win, the Assault won the series 3-0 and will move on. The Crossfire went into game three against the second ranked team in the league down two games and on the road, which they have struggled with all year. With a shortened bench, shored up by young players called up from the midget league, the Crossfire struggled throughout the game, leading to a 24-4 final for the Quesnel team. The Crossfire could only field a bench of two lines said coach Pat Gibbs. “Other things took priority over lacrosse,” he said. It’s a problem Gibbs has been struggling with for the entire year, with a core group of six to eight seniors and four to six midgets that could be depended on to fill in the gaps, the team found itself short of players and willing to take anyone who could shake a stick. The committed centre, though, Gibbs is proud of, even during their final game, which turned to a rout. Despite the rough season,
Gibbs said he’s in it for the long haul and is already looking forward to next season, when a chunk of graduating midgets will move up and swell his ranks, allowing him to be a bit more choosey with who he brings along. “I’m looking forward to putting a group on the floor that is willing and committed,” he said. That new group, plus the already committed centre of the team should make for a more reliable performance on the floor. Of course, it’s not just the players on the floor that make the season happen. Lots of work goes on outside of game times beyond the purview of the spectatorswhich makes each season a success. Gibbs is thankful to the volunteers outside the box that give their time and effort at each home game that makes the season possible. And as ever, he’s thankful to the women that made it all happen, the president of the local lacrosse association – Lisa Scott.
Team M.V.P. Now that the season’s over, Gibbs has named their Goalie, Bob Mills as the team’s M.V.P. and the most dedicated member of the team “It feels good to get the

M.V.P. and be rewarded for my commitment,” he said. Gibbs was impressed with Mills’ enthusiasm for the team, including making the drive from 150 Mile House to Prince George, and back again after, just to play in their final game. Despite hailing from 150 Mile House, Mills has played, or at least been floor side, for every single game the Crossfire has played since its inception two
years ago. Mills was ranked third in the leagueover the regular season, with 600 shots on goal, the most in the league by far, and a 78% save-percentage. Though Mills was rock solid in the net, the team of defence in front of him changed consistently throughout the year, making each game a different experience for the experienced goalie.
“Some nights were definitely harder than others,” he said. “Some nights you have 16 year-olds out there facing off against full grown men and sometimes you face more shots than you should.” Despite the distance, Mills intends to be equally diligent next year, and the next, until someone from Quesnel is willing to step in and take over between the posts.
Waveriders tackle AA Championship JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Two Waveriders met the times and found themselves down in Victoria to challenge themselves at the AA championship. Natasha Hanson and Emerie Watson made the trip after working their way through the hoops and earning a spot. “All in all, it was a great time and experience,” coach Jeritt Brink, who accompanied the girls, said. “To be in what I think is Canada's 2nd best pool and be able to embrace sport and the level of athlete's there is great for our kids.” Natasha Hanson, who had aged up
less than a month before the AAs, placed sixth in the 200 individual medley, going into the finals ninth and found 2.25 seconds to jump her three spots. Because she aged up just before the championship she faced a harder challenge, swimming mostly against girls that were older than her by months, which can mean a lot at that age. She also swam personal best in the 200 back by .11 seconds along with finding the alternate spot, just out of the finals in 200 back and the second alternate in 100 back. Hanson said she was happy with her swim. “It felt really good and flowed nicely,” she said.
While Emerie Watson finished outside of the finals in her events, she earned four personal best times in the championship. Notably, in the 100 freestyle she climbed nine places, from 25 to 19, and gained 1.9 seconds; in the 200 back, she hit a personal best, bettering her time by 4.3 seconds and moving from 19 to 15; she also improved her time by 3.18 seconds in her 200 free swim over the course of the championship. Both girls stumbled at the beginning of the competition before finding their pace. “It just felt off; it was the first swim. It was one of the sooner heats and it was just blah,” Hanson said of her first swim.
It didn’t throw the girls off though. “I pulled it into the finals and when I got there, I was like ‘I have to do this, this is AAs; I’ve swam all year for this,’” Hanson added. With the AAs under her belt Hanson is looking forward to next year with a lot of fervour. She’s planning on maximising her time in the water this summer so she can be ready when the winter season comes around again. She’s already hit her AA time for the short course next year and wants to chase her time all the way to the AAAs. Jerrit is currently in Vancouver with Garnett Currie who is competing in the AAA provincial championship.

Soccer strikes again The Mixed Soccer League started up again at the QYSA indoor fields on Tuesday. Both divisions, the competitive and noncompetitive, have started their quest for the ultimate glory, to win the league championships come fall. The league runs two games per evening, 6 p.m. and again at 7:15 p.m., from Monday to Thursday. Though most teams are topped up with players as of the beginning of the season, it pays to keep in touch if you want to play as attrition tends to eat away at teams numbers over the course of the season. For information and to inquire after spots in the league, call Mike Page at 250-983-2256.
