Homeless need shelter facility
Salvation Army, Community Foundation waiting to hear of funding while homelessness increases S A LLY MACD ON AL D Townsman Staff
They are virtually invisible, but there are hundreds of people dealing with homelessness in Cranbrook. Between February 2011 and June 2013, Cranbrook’s Homeless Outreach Program helped 171 people in varying degrees of homelessness. A vital step in helping these people is a new homeless shelter, a $16 million proposal by the Salvation Army and the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation that is awaiting funding from BC Housing. “Homelessness is increasing, as are the needs of the people we are dealing with,” said Erin Pan, Cran-
brook Homeless Outreach Coordinator. The program launched in November 2008 and has since helped 473 clients with issues of homelessness. They generally fall into three categories: those at risk of being homeless, for example people who have received an eviction notice, or who know they won’t be able to pay the next month’s rent; the “hidden homeless”, meaning people without a fixed address who may live in tents or motor homes or couch surf; and the absolute homeless – people who have no residence at all and sleep on the street.

Ontario youth biking across country to raise awareness for Parkinson’s ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff
For just over a week Trevor McLaughlin has been peddling across Canada. McLaughlin, a 19-year-old from Wallaceburg, Ontario, is on his way back to his hometown, choosing foot power and two wheels as his mode of transportation. On his way through Cranbrook on Thursday he stopped in to talk to the Townsman, be-
fore continuing on the journey to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease. McLaughlin was motivated when the disease hit close to home. “My grandpa was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 10 years ago,” he said. “The last two summers I’ve done 5,000 kilometres in southwestern Ontario combined and this year was just the next step.” On Thursday he was on his
seventh day, and had cycled just over 700 kilometres. “My goal is to be done by Aug. 20,” he said. McLaughlin and his mother, who follows by car, stopped at the tourist information centre, which recommended he stop in at the newspaper office. He was only in town for half an hour before continuing on to Fernie. For more info, check out McLaughlin’s Facebook page “Trevor’s Ride For Parkinson’s.”
The final hot spot for flooding after record rainfall at the end of June, Wasa Lake is slowly but surely on the decline from flood level. The water continues to drop at a rate of about one inch every 24 hours, a relief for nearly a dozen homes that were impacted by the flood last week. Over the Canada Day weekend, the Regional District of East Kootenay was asking people not to use boats on the lake to alleviate further flooding impacts for affected homes. On Thursday, July 4, that request was downgraded to a no-wake zone on the southern half of the lake, where the most affected homes are.

The regional district has placed a voluntary no-wake zone at the southern end of Wasa Lake in the shaded area, from 200 metres north of the Cedar Road boat launch on the east side of the lake, and below the north end of Larch Road where it meets Wasa Lake Park, 250 metres north of Lodgepole Road on the west side of the lake.

A cool new taste for summer A gelato cafe is opening in the Prestige hotel in Cranbrook
Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
There’s a new spot in town to indulge your sweet tooth on these hot summer days. The Gelato Bean Cafe will officially open on Monday, July 8 in the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook. The location was home to a branch of Hot Shots Cafe for 13 years, but the popular cafe closed the spot in May to focus on its large Victoria Avenue location. “Our hotel guests loved it and we were really sad when they left in May,” said Helen Kroeker, who is heading up the Gelato Bean Cafe. “We didn’t want to see the hotel not have a place to get an espresso. It’s part of the hotel experience.” So the hotel is opening its own cafe in the spot, offering delicious Mario’s Gelati, a Vancouver-based manufacturer of high-end Italian ice cream, as well as specialty coffee and tea,
light breakfasts and lunches, and baked goodies. The gelato is the star of the show, though, with an alternating selection of 10 different flavours offered, including vanilla bean, caramel swirl, mango coconut, pistachio, cappucino cookie and green tea. Mario’s Gelati has been making the frozen dessert in Vancouver since 1929, using local, natural produce. Its sorbetto flavours are vegan, and most gelato flavours are gluten free. “It’s such a neat company – it’s family operated,” said Kroeker. “To have such a quality product in Cranbrook is quite a treat.” Gelato is more dense than ice cream, she added. “It gives it a smooth taste on the palate.” The Gelato Bean Cafe is Sally MacDonald photo open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from The Gelato Bean Cafe at the Prestige Inn is open from 7 a.m. to 9 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.
Feed the growth The next session in the One World Garden Workshops series will be held on Tuesday in Kimberley; Wednesday in Cranbrook Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Learn some basics about gardening in the East Kootenay next week during the second of three summer workshops in the One World Garden series. The workshops are designed to suit newcomers to Canada, but anyone who wants to learn more about growing produce or who has
wisdom to impart will appreciate the classes. “As with the last set, we will be enlisting local garden mentors to help share their knowledge and experience with those newer to gardening and new to the area,” said coordinator Shannon Duncan. “We’ll be building on the success of the first set, and having a good time in the garden while
learning.” The next workshop is called “Feed The Growth” and it focuses on tomato care, organic fertilizers, and pest control. The first session in June was on how to create a garden bed and container gardens and plant potatoes. The third session in August will be on berry and root vegetable harvesting and care. The workshops have been made possible through the Welcoming Communities project, funded by the provincial and federal govern-

Homeless numbers growing in East Kootenay Continued from page 1 One of the problems facing people living in poverty is that social assistance does not cover rent; there is a shortage of low-income housing in Cranbrook. For instance, a single person on social assistance receives a monthly cheque of $610. But the average apartment rental is $50 a month more than that. A single parent with a child receives $949 a month. Once rent comes out, they have $154 left for the month to pay for utilities and food. The Salvation Army has long helped people in Cranbrook facing homelessness, operating men’s and women’s temporary shelters in the winter months. But that’s not nearly enough. The proposal currently awaiting BC Housing funding is for a $16.6 million facility that would include 15 overnight beds for men and 15 for women; 16 second-floor units for stays up to two years; 16 thirdfloor units for stays longer than two years; and four family units with three bedrooms in each. Besides housing, the facility will have a commercial kitchen and caf-

The shelter will look at things that have been neglected for so long,” said Neil Cook, chair of the Community Foundation. “There is a lot to be said for having your needs met in one
place.” The shelter will provide much more than a place to sleep, added Pan. “It gives people who are using the facility the ability to deal with people who are invested in them.” The shelter would be built on land donated by the Salvation Army in Slaterville. The City of Cranbrook is waiving
development cost charges. The Regional District of East Kootenay has agreed to provide more than $100,000 to the cause. But it all hinges on B.C. government funding. “I think our proposal is well positioned. We have been meeting with BC Housing for 3 1/2 years. It has grown from a simple shelter to include transitional hous-
ing and services,” said Cook. Over the coming months, fundraising will begin in earnest for the shelter all over the East Kootenay, since the facility will serve the entire region. Cranbrook sits in the centre of about 20 per cent of the province where people do not have access to this kind of temporary housing. “We have a new gov-
ernment, we have the package, this thing is ready to go. We are reaching out to the community to try and bring other partners on board, both in the social sector and First Nations. We are going to get our foot out there,” said Cook. Fundraising will help cover set-up costs for the shelter, operation of the shelter, and top up the cost of building it.
This is a tough time of year to fundraise for homelessness, Cook went on. “Fundraising gets tougher this time of the year. It’s easy to talk about homelessness when it’s 100 degrees outside. When it’s 40 degrees it’s a whole other conversation,” he said. “Support is seasonal; homelessness is not.” Pan gave the statistic that each person living in a shelter costs about $40,000 a year. A homeless person who is not serviced costs about $200,000 a year. If you calculate that the outreach program has had 473 clients, “then the shelter has pretty much paid for itself,” she said. It’s important to note that homelessness is not something that just happens to other people, Cook pointed out. “I don’t know a lot of homes in town that could go without three pay cheques and not be facing issues of homelessness.” Anyone wishing to support the homeless shelter can call the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation at 250-426-1119 or mail a cheque to Box 242, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 4H8.
New airport runway reporting system in the works
Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
Plans are in the works for a new runway condition reporting system at the Canadian Rockies International Airport. The system improves safety and reporting times for runway conditions. Council received word that the federal government would cover 85 per cent of the cost of the project under the Airport Capital Assistance Program, leaving the remaining 15 per cent to the city. The estimated cost of the project is $39,665, with $33,715 coming from the federal level and $5,950 coming from the city. CAO Wayne Staudt noted that the contribution doesn’t come from the city’s general revenue.
“Our contribution of $5,950 towards this project is all from airport operations and there’s no property taxes going in to support any capital projects out at the airport,” Staudt said. The city has to enter into a contribution agreement with the Government of Canada, which Cranbrook has done for airport capital projects in previous years, most recently was the runway sweeper in 2012. “This is an ongoing partnership between the federal government and the operation of the airport,” said Coun. Angus Davis. “They do put big dollars into it, so we’re very fortunate that way.” City staff recommended that council enter into the agreement. The deal would
also make the city responsible for any unforeseen overruns in costs, though the agreement allows the city leeway to cancel if the cost gets too high. They also recommended autho-
rizing the mayor and chief administrative officer to sign the agreement on behalf of the city. Tristen Chernove, managing director of the airport, said Canadi-
an Rockies International Airport didn’t expect the funding to be approved in 2013, so the project was not forecasted in the capital plan. The airport is however ready to move forward
with the project in 2013. Chernove notes that the runway condition reporting system will improve safety by “enabling airport personnel to transmit the condition of the runway in a
more timely, consistent and accurate manner.” The system is in place at large airports and Chernove said it is expected to becoming standard equipment at medium sized airports.
Name of missing Jaffray man released The search for Zeke Fantuz has been scaled back in the Bull River because of high water
Townsman Staff
Cranbrook RCMP, Search and Rescue, family and friends continue to search for a 20-yearold Jaffray man who is believed to have driven off the Bull River Forest Service Road on Monday, June 24 and was last seen at 11:15 p.m. that night. Search efforts have been scaled back due to high water levels in the Bull River and increased
turbidity, which continues to hamper everyone’s efforts to locate the vehicle and driver. The police investigation and search efforts have confirmed a location where a vehicle left the Bull River Forest Service Road and is presumed to have entered the Bull River. Items recovered at the scene and from locations down river have been confirmed by fami-
ly as belonging to 20-year-old Ezekiel “Zeke” Fantuz of Jaffray. The police and family have a high degree of certainty that the missing vehicle is located in the Bull River at the location where it went off the road, however Zeke has not been located and is presumed to be deceased. The RCMP are requesting the assistance of all users on the Bull
River and Kootenay River such as kayakers, rafters, boaters and fishermen to be aware of this investigation and to be on the lookout for any items associated to this case and to report the finding of them to police. The RCMP would like to thank all the people who have and are continuing to assist in this case. The family of Zeke Fantuz wants the public
to know that they will be holding a memorial service for Zeke on Saturday, July 6 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Jaffray with a reception after at the Jaffray Community Hall. If anyone has any additional information they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-4893471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers (1-800222-TIPS).

Bear attacks two Fernie residents on Mt. Proctor BC Conservation Officer Service is investigating reports of a grizzly attack
Tamara Hynd The Free Press
The details are still under investigation but it has been reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) that two Fernie men are recovering after they were attacked by what appeared to be a sow grizzly bear on the ridge top of Mt. Proctor on Wednesday. The two men, who are in their mid 30s, were hiking
along the ridge top of Mt. Proctor around 9 a.m. A bear charged towards them and began attacking one man, biting his upper arm and chest area. When the man discharged pepper spray into the bear’s face, the bear backed off but then ran at the second man. The second man had a shotgun and discharged one
shot at the bear at a very close range. The bear continued to attack the second man for a few seconds. Following the attack on the second man, the bear fled into the bushes. One cub was seen with the sow. Both men were able to apply basic first aid to each other and then quickly made their way down the moun-
tain. The men arrived at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie where they were treated for their injuries. Authorities were notified at this time. Sergeant Joe Caravetta from COS confirmed that on Wednesday there were five officers in the area investigating this incident with the aid of a helicopter and one of the injured men to locate the at-
tack area. “We have officers on site at the attack area just now conducting our investigation. We still need to confirm that it was a grizzly bear.” Caravetta continued, “The incident did not happen in the Fairy Creek/Mt. Proctor recreation trail area but for public safety, we have closed that area. We ask that
people stay out of that area until we have finished our investigation.” Caravetta added, “We don’t know why the attack happened yet. We don’t want to jump to any conclusions so we are investigating.” Both men were taken down to the ground during the attack and suffered non-life-threatening injuries to their arms, legs and upper body.
Burmese refugees achieving success C AROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin
It has long been the belief among the volunteers with the East Kootenay Friends of Burma that settling refugees into small towns can be a more rewarding experience for all involved. Certainly that has proved to be the case in Kimberley and Cranbrook. Without the anonymity and sheer numbers of large urban centres, refugee families get to know their sponsors, and their community, in a personal way. A case in point is the family of Karen refugees from Burma, which EKFOB began bringing into Kimberley five years ago. The Paw family settled in Kimberley, stepping into Western civilization after spending most of their lives in a refugee camp on the Thai Burmese border. It began with one young couple and their daughter and gradually over the years, EKFOB has
been able to bring in more of the extended family — parents, grandparents, in-laws, cousins. For Friends of Burma volunteers, settling a family is not just a case of finding them a home, it is a commitment to help the family deal with their change in circumstances over a long period of time. “Settlement and integration work by EKFOB volunteers continues for years after refugees arrive and covers an amazingly broad range of activities — from participating in local community events like the Wasa parade, to learning to ski and skate, to practicing with prosthetics, attending doctors appointments, swim and kayak days at Wasa Lake and even road trips to encourage other rural communities to follow Kimberley’s lead and sponsor refugees,” said FOB’s Shauna Jimenez. gees are also achieving success. “Htay Win, a Karen refugee who arrived with his elderly parents
last July, just successfully passed his learner’s driving test,” she said. “He works full time as a custodian for Zaw Naing, the first refugee sponsored by EKFOB. “Adem Idris, an Eritrean refugee who arrived in February 2011, just successfully completed the one-year engineering diploma at the COTR. He was accepted into the second year of the environmental engineering program at UNBC in Prince George. He is currently working in construction in Calgary to save money for his studies. “Amaren Solomon Dawit has been working for a local pet food manufacturer and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of his brother, who is in a refugee camp in Ethiopia and whom EKFOB has applied to sponsor.” The success of these people is due to their hard work and dedication and the support of EK Friends of Burma volunteers, Ryeburn says.
No-wake zones on Wasa Lake Continued from page 1
The zone applies to the area below 200 metres north of the Cedar Road boat launch on the east side of the lake, and below the north end of Larch Road where it meets Wasa Lake Park, 250 metres north of Lodgepole Road on the west side of the lake.
“As the water is still high at Cedar Road, we are requesting people not use the Cedar Road launch and choose an alternate launch at this time,” said RDEK information officer Loree Duczek. “Thank you for your patience during the vol-
untary ‘no boating’ request, and in advance for respecting the requested no wake zone during the continued high water.” To ensure boat wakes don’t cause further flooding for affected homes, the RDEK is asking boaters to voluntarily reduce speeds in the nowake zone.

Cranbrook residents reminded of city’s Streets and Traffic bylaw S u bmit ted
The City of Cranbrook wants to remind residents of the Streets and Traffic bylaw, which came into effect in June 2010, regulating on-street parking of recreational vehicles and unattached trailers. The bylaw prohibits parking recreational vehicles and trailers on residential streets between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and prohibits parking unat-
tached trailers on any street at any time, unless in an emergency situation. The bylaw applies to travel trailers, tent trailers, utility trailers, campers, motor homes as well as boats and boats on trailers. The intent of the regulation is to keep City streets safe and accessible for vehicular and pedestrian use. City staff fields numerous complaints on a regular basis relating to trailers
blocking driveways and using limited on-street parking for long periods of time. It is recommended that residents find alternate places to leave their RV’s, campers, boats and trailers when not in use, other than on the street. To review a complete copy of the amended Streets and Traffic Bylaw 3678, 2010, please visit the city’s website at www.cranbrook.ca.
Bennett says Hydro rates will rise, but can’t say by how much C anadian Press
VICTORIA — Energy Minister Bill Bennett says British Columbians should prepare themselves for BC Hydro rate increases. Bennett says nobody should be surprised to learn that the Crown corporation is facing cost pressures and power rates will need to go up.
But he doesn’t say how much the rates will increase or when. Bennett says British Columbians currently pay the fourth lowest power rates in North America, but major infrastructure projects, that include costly power dam refits, are putting upward pressure on rates. The Opposition New
Democrats have suggested that rates are going up because of cost overruns of more than $140 million on the construction of the Northwest Transmission line. In 2011, the B.C. government rejected a proposed rate increase of up to 50 per cent over five years and instead announced a review of hydro.

Egypt, Turkey, democracy in trouble
E
gypt and Turkey have the same basic political problem. Democracy can work despite huge ideological differences, but only if everybody is willing to be very tolerant of other people’s ideas and values. Three weeks ago the streets of Turkish cities were full of protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who won his third straight election in 2011. Why? Because, they say, he is shoving conservative Islamic values down their throats. The Turkish protests have now died down, but this week the streets of Egyptian cities have been full of protesters demanding exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason. The Egyptian army has now intervened to remove the Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, and the very survival of the new Egyptian democracy is in doubt. Neither Erdogan nor Morsi could have come to power in a country that wasn’t fully democratic. Turkey has been a partly democratic country for sixty years, but if a politician with a religious agenda won, the army would remove him. It even hanged one prime minister in 1960. In Egypt, three generals had ruled the country in unbroken succession since the mid-1950s. Latterly they allowed “elections”, but their party always won, and the main religious party, the Muslim Brotherhood, was always banned. The Turkish and Egyptian generals were mostly devout Muslims themselves, but they were willing to kill to keep religion out of politics. Islamic parties were a vehicle for traditional and anti-modern values, and the generals’ goal was to modernise their countries so they would be strong enough to stand up to the West. There was some cynicism in their policy, too. The secular political parties in Turkey (and in Egypt too, until they finally
withered away under 60 years of military dictatorship) were too fragmented and disunited to pose any real threat to the army’s power, whereas a single Islamic party with broad popular support might do just that. So religion must be firmly excluded from politics. In both countries, the generals’ modernising agenda had considerable success. Turkey is now a Gwynne powerful middle-income nation, and at least half of Dyer its 75 million people are secular and “modern” in their political values. So they wanted the military out of politics, and finally the army withdrew — only to see the new Justice and Development (AK) Party, a “moderate” Islamist party led by Erdogan, win the 2003 election. The Turkish generals let the AK rule because it didn’t try to impose its own religious values on the whole population. It refrained because even in its best result, in 2010, the AK only won 50.3 percent of the vote — and some of that support came from secular voters who saw it as the best hope for permanently excluding the army from politics. Egypt is a much poorer, less educated country than Turkey, but at least a third of the 85 million Egyptians would also qualify as “modern” people with secular values. They were the ones who made the revolution happen in 2010 — but in the new democracy’s first free presidential election last year the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate, Mohammed Morsi, won 51.7 percent of the vote. The Muslim Brotherhood promptly started writing its conservative religious values into the new constitution. More recently, Erdogan’s AK Party in Turkey passed some laws that imposed its religious values too. It wasn’t a wholesale assault on the secular society (in Turkey they just placed some restrictions on the sale of alcohol), but in both countries it greatly alarmed
the secular part of the population. So it took only the slightest pretext — a demonstration over the destruction of a park in Istanbul, the first anniversary of Morsi’s election in Egypt — to bring huge crowds of protesters out on the street in every city. At that point, both Islamist leaders stopped pretending that they governed in the name of the entire nation. “Let them go into mosques in their shoes, let them drink alcohol in our mosques, let them raise their hand to our headscarved girls,” said Erdogan of the Turkish protestors. “One prayer from our people is enough to frustrate their plans.” He blamed the protests on an international conspiracy by something called the “interest-rate lobby.” In Egypt, Morsi vowed to “give my life” to defend the new constitution written by his Islamist colleagues last year, and blamed the unrest on a plot by remnants of the ousted Mubarak regime. The Egyptian army has now suspended the constitution, but it is a “soft coup” that will almost certainly leave Morsi alive. Perhaps even free. The Islamists are to blame for this crisis in both countries, because their political programme does ultimately involve shoving their values down everybody else’s throats. But the secular parties are also to blame, because it is their inability to unite behind a single candidate and programme that has let the Islamists win power in both Turkey and Egypt. It is hard for democracy to survive in a country where large parts of the population hold radically different ideas about the purposes of the state and the rights of its citizens. Urbanisation will ultimately resolve this conflict, for in one more generation most of the recent immigrants to the fast-growing cities will have adopted secular values. But in the meantime, Egypt will have a very rough ride. Maybe Turkey too. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Although some blue books were

In fact, the demand became so great for Bibliothèque Bleue that the publishers could barely keep up. It was an odd market though. Blue books did not sell to the illiterate, or the highly literate. The market was restricted to beginning readers only. An odd situation, as the publishers were going to lose future sales as their customers became more and more adept at reading. Yet for the time being, it seemed as if this boom in publishing was unstoppable. Of course somebody did stop it — those killjoys known as the French government. It remains unclear if the political leaders of France truly objected to the licentious content of the books, or simply that they no longer could control the cultural life of the peasant class. Either way, they began a systematic attack on all fronts, enlisting the most unlikely ally to their cause: the mass murderer Jean-Baptiste Troppman. But that is for next week. Jesus’ 10-point political checklist L ast week, I had some fun with a top 10 list about things you can’t do if you claim to follow Jesus. But Christian faith is not just a personal thing. It’s also political. It has to do with how human beings live together, and how we manage relationships within a society. Again, this is not a complete list but it’s a pretty good place to start. 10) Force your religious beliefs and practices on others. Jesus taught and valued free will over compulsion. That’s how love works. Compelling people to follow any religion is contrary to the faith of Jesus. If you use the government to compel people to practice your spiritual beliefs, you might be the reason baby Jesus is crying. This does get tricky. There is a difference in letting your beliefs inform your political choices and letting your politics enforce your religion. This column is about the first part. 9) Advocate for war. There’s a reason why he was called the Prince of Peace. Sure, you can quote, “I did not come to bring peace, but a sword,” and even two or three other verses, but they don’t hold a candle to the more than fifty–some verses where Jesus speaks about peace and peacemaking. It’s funny how things keep coming back to love but you can’t love someone and kill them. In the end, love wins. 8) Favour the rich over the poor. This is actually related to #4. Favouring the rich over the poor is a slap in the face of Jesus. It is bad enough when we allow the rich to take advantage of the poor, but when laws are created to encourage that behaviour and protect it,
we’ve gone over the line. 7) Cut funding that hurts the least of these. To some degree, this is the inverse of #8. Favouring the rich is despicable, but hurting the poor is just a whole lot worse than despicable. When Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of these, you do it to me,” he meant it. When you cut funding and it hurts people, according to Jesus you are Rev. Yme hurting him. 6) Let people go hungry. Woensdregt Yes, this hits both of these lists. Hunger is both a spiritual issue and a political issue. Remember Gandhi? “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.” Politically, hunger causes problems with education, production, and civil behaviour that are all necessary for a successful nation. More importantly for Christians, Jesus said when we feed the hungry, we are feeding him. 5) Withhold health care from people. Health care is not just a necessity. It is a right. No two–tier medical system which favours the rich. No cutting benefits for those who are poor. We pride ourselves on our universal health care in Canada, but studies show that about 20 per cent of Canadians don’t have adequate medical coverage — supplementary benefits such as prescription drugs, glasses, dental checkups and physiotherapy. 4) Limit the rights of a select group of people. Jesus loves everybody. He doesn’t love me best. If you spend any time reading the Bible you know that all were made in
Letters to the Editor
God’s image. Any law that doesn’t treat people equally is as good as thumbing your nose at God. 3) Turn away immigrants. Scripture tells us to care for “the widow, the orphan, and the stranger in the gate.” The story of our faith is filled with people who came from somewhere else: Abraham and Sarah were told to pick up what they had and start traveling. Moses, Miriam, and Aaron led a nation out of Egypt into the desert and ultimately to new lands. Even Jesus spent part of his childhood as a foreigner in a foreign land. We know about being strangers in a foreign land. Our aboriginal peoples know about that too. At best, turning away immigrants makes us hypocrites, since we’re all from somewhere else; at worst, we betray our ancestors and our God. 2) Devalue education. We learn in Proverbs that wisdom is something in which God delights daily. As a matter of fact, according to Proverbs, wisdom is better than gold. When you look at the percentage of our budget that goes to education and at what is happening with student loans, it’s becoming clearer that delighting in wisdom is something our government no longer does. 1) Support capital punishment—execution. Jesus died by execution. He was an innocent man. We don’t support state– sanctioned killing, but we are moving inexorably closer to more draconian measures to punish criminals. It’s time for another way. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Shirley, Lee invited to national U18 summer camp TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Hockey Canada has released it’s summer selection roster for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, and a Kootenay Ice player and Cranbrook product have been invited. Ice forward Collin Shirley got the nod, while Cranbrook stopper Payton Lee, who plays for the Vancouver Giants, will join four other goaltenders to vie for the starting job.
Payton Lee “These players are the cream of the crop of under-18 talent in Canada, and it’s going to be exciting to see them battle for 22 roster spots,” said Jankowski, the newly named head scout for Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. “As it is every year, there were some tough decisions to get down to 42, and they will be even tougher decisions to finalize the roster.”
Shirley is coming off his first season in the WHL that saw him put up nine goals and 23 points and was second to Luke Philp in rookie scoring. He managed to establish himself as a topsix forward and found himself regularly playing with Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau on the front line. Payton Lee is billed as the future for the Vancouver Giants, working his way into starting duties as a 16-year-old after getting released at the beginning of the season. Lee appeared in 36 games and posted a 3.51 goals against average and a save percentage of 0.879. Both Shirley and Lee have some international experience under their belts, as they competed in the U17 World Hockey Challenge in Ontario over the Christmas break. The camp includes 42 players, with 15 from the WHL, 15 from the OHL and 9 from the QMJHL, while a few others don’t play in the CHL. The final roster will be made up of 22 players.
After two rounds at the Revelstoke Golf Club, Kimberley product Jared duToit was sitting in the lead, ahead by a stroke against his closest competitor. However, after the third round, he had been overtaken by a pair of golfers that share the lead, and now sits in fourth place. “It was the definition of a struggle today,” said duToit. “I got sloppy, the wind really picked up and I’m not exactly the best wind player. I kind of struggled on the back nine, made a couple careless bogeys and a double, which sucked, but other than that, I think I’m still in this.” DuToit shot a 71 and a 68 in his first two rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday, and posted a 73 on Thursday. “The course is great,” duToit said. “It really suits me actually, and
it’s really shaped up over the last couple days—it’s been really hot lately, so it’s firming up and I like firm.” DuToit wasn’t the only local golfer in the hunt, as Scott Merriam and Cole Tepper represent Cranbrook, while Evan Gresty and Russell duToit hail from Kimberley. Only Merriam and Jared duToit have made the cut for the final round on Friday. DuToit, a talented golfer who has committed to attend the University of Idaho and play for the golf team, is being pushed by the top junior talent across the province. “It’s a high-calibre tournament, but they are a lot of my buddies too,” said duToit.” I get along with everybody just sitting on that putting green, cracking jokes at each other. It’s pretty fun.”

Stars and Bruins complete blockbuster trade Kootenay Ice alumnus sent to Boston in seven-player deal involving Tyler Seguin, Loui Eriksson ASSOCIATED PRESS
DALLAS - Tyler Seguin is headed to the Dallas Stars in a trade less than a week after Boston’s general manager criticized the former No. 2 overall pick as needing to be a “better pro.” Seguin was sent to the Stars on Thursday in a seven-player deal also highlighted by steady forward Loui Eriksson joining the Eastern Conference-champion Bruins. Dallas got forward Rich Peverley and defenceman Ryan Button, while the Bruins acquired forwards Matt Fraser and Reilly Smith, and defenceman Joe Morrow. It was the first major move for new Stars general manager Jim Nill, who addressed the team’s need at centre with Seguin, the No. 2 pick in 2010, and Peverley. The trade will allow Dallas’ leading scorer, Jamie Benn, to move to his more natural spot at wing. “Tyler is a dynamic player that will be a part of our core group for a long time to come,” Nill said. “A player at his age, position and talent level are extremely difficult to acquire and we’re thrilled to bring him into
our organization.” Seguin won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins as a rookie and was their leading scorer and an All-Star a year later. He dropped to a tie for third on the team in scoring during this past season’s run to the Stanley Cup finals. Boston lost to Chicago in six games. At the draft last weekend, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli essentially said that Seguin wasn’t focused enough on
hockey, although he made it sound like the 21-year-old would be back by saying he was expecting “big things from him.” Instead, the Bruins have added Dallas’ second-leading scorer in Erikkson, a 2011 AllStar who turns 28 this month. He and Ray Whitney were second to Benn with 29 points. Seguin leads all players from the 2010 draft class in games played (203) and is third in goals (56), assists (65) and points
(121). Peverley is viewed as a No. 2 centre who is strong in the faceoff circle, while Button will join a veteran blue line that recently added 39-year-old Sergei Gonchar on a two-year, $10 million contract. Smith had nine points in 37 games for the Stars while shuffling between Dallas and the Texas Stars of the AHL. Fraser appeared in nine games for Dallas, while Morrow has yet to make his NHL debut.
Habs pick up Briere with two-year deal C ANADIAN PRESS
MONTREAL - Danny Briere is not likely to hear many more boos at the Bell Centre. The free agent from Gatineau, Que., has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens. The Philadelphia Flyers used a compliance buy-out last week on the final two years of an eight-year, US$52 million deal Briere signed in 2007. Because he turned down an offer from the Canadiens to sign with the Flyers that year,
Briere was booed whenever Philadelphia visited Montreal. Now, he’s a Canadien, returning to his native Quebec on a deal reportedly worth $4 million per season. “For me, the Montreal Canadiens fans are probably the most passionate fans in the NHL,” Briere said on a conference call Thursday night. “It’s an honour to be playing for them, in front of them, and all I’m hoping is that we will all be cheering in the same direction when the seasons starts.” The 35-year-old Briere had
reportedly narrowed his list of potential destinations to the Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators. “Daniel Briere brings a great deal of skills, experience and leadership to our team and he is a significant addition to our group of forwards,” Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement. “Daniel showed a great desire to pursue his career in Montreal and we are very happy that he committed to playing in Montreal for the next two seasons.”

Lisicki, Bartoli reach Wimbledon womens finals Chris Lehourites Associated Press
LONDON - Sabine Lisicki advanced to her first Wimbledon final a couple of hours after Marion Bartoli reached her second. Lisicki, a 2011 semifinalist at the All England Club, beat fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 2-6, 9-7 Thursday on Centre Court, overpowering her opponent at the start and then hanging on despite trailing 3-0 at the end. “I go out there to win,” said Lisicki, the first German to reach the Wimbledon final since Steffi Graf in 1999. “I fight for every single point and I still enjoy the game, so I think those are the main parts why I won today.” Bartoli took control early and never let up in a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kirsten Flipkens. She also reached the Wimbledon final in
2007, losing to Venus Williams in straight sets. Saturday’s final will be the second at Wimbledon in the 45-year Open era between two women who have never won a Grand Slam title. Lisicki may have the edge in that match with a 3-1 record against Bartoli, including a quarterfinal win at Wimbledon in 2011 in their last meeting. Lisicki, who beat defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round, dictated play in the first set by winning 22 of her 30 points on serve and breaking once. But her serve deserted her after that. Once the second set started, Radwanska came alive and Lisicki crumpled. Lisicki lost all four of her service games, with the lowlight coming in the final game of the second set. Leading
30-0, Lisicki lost four straight points, including two double-faults. “She made some really good points. I made a few errors too many,” Lisicki said. “But I regained my focus and game in the third set, and that’s the main part.” In the third, Lisicki was again broken early but finally held to make it 3-1 and then broke to get back on serve. Both players held serve until Lisicki got the deciding break in the 15th game when Radwanska hit a volley long. “It’s just one break,” Radwanska said. “She was serving very well. So the one break on one side was a lot, and on other hand was not really.” A few minutes earlier, Radwanska had been two points from victory. The two were tied at 30-30 and later at deuce
in the 12th game with Radwanska leading 6-5. “I had a lot of chances. Just two points from the match,” Radwanska said. “Then she serve second serve like 100 miles per hour. Then, you know, it just turned the other way.” Lisicki said her big win over Serena Williams helped her Thursday. “I thought, ‘I’ve done it against Serena so you can do it today as well, just hang in there,”’ Lisicki said. “It gave me so much confidence and I’m just so, so happy I was able to finish it.” Lisicki finished the match, but one of the two scoreboards on either side of the court didn’t, going blank late in the third set. Bartoli wasted little time in her match, dancing and grunting her way to victory over the 20th-seeded Belgian who was playing in her

first major semifinal. “I played great. I executed very well. I hit lobs, passing shots, winners, returns, everything worked out perfectly,” said Bartoli, who won in 62 minutes. “When I fell on the grass after match point, it was just so emotional. I dreamed about that moment, about returning to the Wimbledon final.” Amelie Mauresmo, the 2006 Wimbledon champion who now coaches France’s Fed Cup team, was in the stands for the early match and had plenty of praise for Bartoli. “She just played a great match, definitely the best match of the tournament for her,” Mauresmo said. “Marion put huge pressure on her right from the beginning, first of all returning very well, serving better, which she had to do today.”
TAMPA, Fla. - New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter says he thinks he is close to feeling well enough to begin playing in minor league games. The Yankees’ captain says he is now doing everything needed before beginning a rehabilitation assignment. “I’m anxious to be playing in games,” Jeter said after working out Thursday at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “When they tell me to play, I’ll play.” On Wednesday, Jeter ran the bases after putting the ball in play during simulated at-bats for the first time since a second break was found in his left ankle. He is expected to rejoin the Yankees after the All-Star break. “Everything felt good,” Jeter said. Jeter has been out all season. He broke his ankle in the opener of the AL championship series on Oct. 13. After surgery, he played just five spring training games because of soreness. A new break was discovered on April 18. Former Real Madrid manager to coach national team Neil Davidson Canadian Press
TORONTO - Veteran Spanish manager Benito Floro is expected to be introduced Friday as coach of the Canadian men’s soccer team. Floro’s appointment was reported by Marca, a Spanish national daily sports newspaper. The Canadian Soccer Association confirmed it will introduce its new coach Friday morning in Toronto but declined comment on the report or Floro. Canada has been without a full-time coach since Stephen Hart stepped down in October following the national team’s humiliating exit from World Cup qualifying.
Floro, 61, has a lengthy resume that includes being in charge of Spanish giant Real Madrid from 1992 to 1994. Nineteen managers have patrolled the sidelines at the Santiago Bernabeu since. Most recently he coached WAC (Wydad Athletic Club) Morocco. Other teams on his resume include Spain’s Villareal, Sporting Gijon, and Mallorca among others. He has also managed Monterrey in Mexico and Vissel Kobe in Japan. Floro earned headlines for leading Albacete Balompie from the third division to Spain’s elite league in three seasons during the early 1990s. That
precipitated his hiring at Real Madrid where he led the team to second place in La Liga and the Copa Del Rey before being fired the following season. Flor fits in between Leo Beenhakker and Vicente Del Bosque in the Real Madrid managerial annals. He returned to Albacete and then Madrid in 2005 when he re-
placed Arrigo Sacchi as the club’s sporting director. Floro has also worked as a TV commentator. The next coach will be Canada’s eighth fulltime manager since Tony Waiters took the national team to the 1986 World Cup, Canada’s only trip to the men’s world championship.

Soccer skills put to the test Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
Young soccer stars put their footie skills to the test at a recent soccer jamboree at Moir Park, featuring teams from around the Kootenay region. The weekend after Sam Steele Days, boys and girls teams ranging from U8 to U12 came out to play games where the only focus was on fun, according to Shauna Beaulac, who is in-

volved with the KEYSA Rovers. “It’s just a fun tournament, there’s no awards, no first, second or third place,” she said. “With a jamboree, that’s a part of the rules, you’re not allowed to give out medals or anything like that.” Along with games on the field, a representative with B.C. Soccer came up and had an area set up where kids could work on
their fundamentals. “They came and did drills with the kids, so when the kids weren’t playing, there was an area for kids to go take part and learn some new drills,” added Beaulac. “That was really neat, we hope that they come back next year. The kids loved it, it gave them something to do when they weren’t playing soccer.” All photos submitted by Shauna Beaulac.

A powerful tool when you want to reach your potential customers.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have a unique ability to know when to reverse course and head in a different direction. The problem lies in that others often are in shock when you decide to veer off on a new path. Realize what you want and what you expect from a situation. Tonight: Join friends. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll want to move through a new idea and get to the other end quickly. For whatever reason, you could feel as if you must digest this information. However, you quickly might want to reverse directions. Tonight: Time for some indulgence and good times with friends. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You naturally take on the role of chief celebrator. Others want to stay close to you, as they assume that you know how to live life well. A friend might throw plans your way in a moment of chaos, but you’ll see a way where everything can be done. Tonight: Be totally in the moment.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You know what is needed, but the opening to bring forth what is necessary might not present itself. Be more observant. You could be taken aback by an associate. This person’s actions do not conform to your image of him or her. Tonight: Meet up with a special friend. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Reach out to someone at a distance. Be more direct in your communication. Know what you want to achieve, and take the necessary steps to make it happen. What starts out as a formal meeting dissolves into a colorful event. You like this turn of events. Tonight: Go with the flow. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) How you deal with a close family member could change. You are more relaxed than you have been in a while, even with a loved one creating some uproar. In fact, instead of being threatened, you become more and more amused. Tonight: Togetherness is the theme. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
For Better or Worse
Defer to others, and make sure they know that you have had enough. You see events in a new light because of someone’s unpredictability. Realize what is motivating you. You likely will feel as if you can’t do anything more. Tonight: Try a new spot or a new type of happening. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might want to take in a different perspective than you have in the past. You know what is going on in a unique or difficult situation. A partner or close friend shares some important information that needs to be kept quiet. Tonight: Be a duo around town. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could find that an unexpected call or event throws your plans off. No matter how structured situations become, you must remain flexible. You are getting lessons in how to go with the flow and respond. The less structure, the better the outcome. Tonight: Where people are. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might want to attempt a new approach or see a situation
in a new light. You are able to work in less-than-perfect situations and not let it bother you. Honor a request from a friend or loved one. If you go with spontaneity, you can’t go wrong. Tonight: The only answer is “yes.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Hopefully you started the day early and have incorporated some fun people into your plans. Your schedule might take many unexpected turns, but you will like the excitement. Someone you meet in your day-to-day travels could shake up your life. Tonight: Play time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) What you are sharing could cause a conflict at home or with a family member. You might feel as if you need a change of some kind. Be careful, as someone close to you could feel threatened. Use caution when dealing with your funds. Tonight: Try to make it an early night. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My grandmother died the day before I was scheduled for an important job interview. I’d received notice two weeks prior, and it said there would be no rescheduling of the interview for any reason whatsoever. If I failed to show up, I would be barred from being hired for another year. I was desperate for work, and when my father called to tell me my grandmother died, I told him I was sorry, but there was no way I could make it to the funeral in the morning, although I did go by his house to see him. I went to the interview (and was hired) and went to the house right after. Nobody said anything, but I could tell my family was disappointed. Since the funeral, my parents have been angry with me. I understand this, but work is scarce in my area, and I couldn’t afford to miss this opportunity. Frankly, if I were unemployed, I doubt my parents would give me any money, and it would be foolish to rely on that kind of help anyway. Besides, who wants to have to ask their parents for stuff when they’re 35 years old? I needed this job. I told my parents that my grandmother would rather I secure a job than attend her funeral. But now my relatives are saying nasty things about me behind my back. Was I right to skip the funeral in favor of a job interview? -- Downstate Illinois Dear Illinois: We understand why the job interview could not be postponed, especially for a full year. But we also know that your parents are hurt and maybe a bit embarrassed that their child didn’t show up for Grandma’s funeral. You need to apologize, but without simultaneously justifying and defending your choice. Simply say that you are truly sorry, and you hope they can forgive you. Then give them time to do that. Dear Annie: My daughter turned 16 last week. We asked her friends to come to her party, and no one showed up. She was so upset. My daughter is in a special needs life skills classroom with 12 kids just like her. How can their parents be so cruel? It’s so unfair to my child. What can I do about this? -- Not So Sweet 16 Party Dear Not So Sweet: It’s very possible that these classmates felt uncomfortable attending your daughter’s party and lacked the social skills necessary to say so. Or, if your daughter invited them word-of-mouth, they might have forgotten or the parents were unaware of the time and date. The important thing is your response to your daughter. Please don’t turn this into a tragedy or a reason to badmouth her classmates. Instead, teach your daughter how to graciously cope with these disappointments and move forward. You might even try to reschedule a party for her over the summer, although you might first get in touch with the parents to be sure there are no additional difficulties. Dear Annie: This is in response to “Enlightened,” who threatened to throw her child’s things away if she didn’t pick them up. I was a messy daughter growing up, and my mother did exactly that. What she failed to see (and still does not) is that my messy ways, forgetfulness and “laziness” were the result of posttraumatic stress disorder due to years of emotional, sexual and physical abuse. Parents should be careful with how harshly they judge their children, as they are a result of how they are raised. Yelling, arguing and throwing things in garbage bags often do more harm than good. Look for the root cause. There may be more going on than meets the eye. Perhaps she’s being bullied at school or is stressed about grades. No one enjoys being messy. It makes our lives more difficult, as well. -- Shell-Shocked Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Plane that runs on the sun soon to end US journey

NEW YORK — Joey Chestnut downed 69 franks and devoured his own record in the men’s Fourth of July hot dog eating contest while Sonya Thomas defended her title in the women’s competition. The San Jose, Calif., man known as Jaws ate one more wiener than his previous record to capture the mustard-yellow champion’s belt. He said afterward that he was motivated by the prestige, not the $10,000 prize money. “I’d do this for nothing,’’ he said. Thomas, a 100-pound dynamo known as the “Black Widow’’ of competitive eating, wolfed down nearly 37 wieners to narrowly eke out her own victory. Chestnut, 29, is a seven-time winner who set the old record — 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes — in 2009 and tied it last year. Thomas, 45, powered through 45 dogs to take the women’s championship last year and also won in 2011, the first year women competed separately Chestnut, who weighs 210 pounds, had said his pace was uneven in the past, but “this year I’m trying to eat a little more gracefully, conserve my energy.’’ Second-place finisher was Matt Stonie, who chomped down 51 hot dogs.
Solar Impulse in flight. seem to stretch as far as a jumbo jet’s. It weighs about the size of a small car, and soars at 30,000 feet (10,000 metres) with what is essentially the power of a small motorized scooter. “We can use much less energy than we use today without the sacrifice,’’ said Solar Impulse CEO Andre Borschberg, the plane’s other pilot. “And that’s really important.’’ Borschberg and Piccard both say this is not about clean-energy planes for the future. What they’re doing is more likely to improve energy efficiency on the ground, in cars and homes, agrees U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, who met with the pair to talk up future energy a couple days after they landed in Washington. Still, questions of practicality come up.
“It’s clearly a stunt,’’ said John Reilly, co-director of MIT’s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change. “And it’s clearly an attention-grabbing stunt. The idea that you could fly an airplane powered by the sun is kind of hard to believe. So doing it is an impressive stunt, I suppose.’’ But these kinds of gimmicks do pay off at times, Reilly said. University of Colorado science policy professor Roger Pielke Jr. compared it to giant prizes that encourage private companies to go into space or build robot-driven cars, which are proving successful. This, Pielke said, is “an essential part of technological innovation. It gives people an opportunity to attempt what previously was thought of as impossible.’’

‘Jaws’ downs 69 franks to break record, win 7th-straight hot dog eating contest

WASHINGTON — A revolutionary solar-powered plane is about to end a slow, symbolic journey across America by quietly buzzing the Statue of Liberty and landing in a city whose buildings often obscure the sun. The Solar Impulse leaves from Washington on a journey planned for Saturday, depending on the weather. It will take hours for the journey — top speed is 45 mph (73 kph) — and there are none of the most basic comforts of flying. The aircraft’s creators view themselves as green pioneers — promoting lighter materials, solar-powered batteries and conservation as sexy and adventurous. Theirs is the high-flying equivalent of the Tesla electric sports car. They want people to feel a thrill while saving the planet. Bertrand Piccard is one of the two pilots who take turns flying Solar Impulse. His grandfather was the first man to see the curve of the Earth as a pioneering high-altitude balloon flier more than 80 years ago. His father more than half a century ago first took a submarine to the deepest and most inaccessible ocean trench on Earth. Now, Piccard says there’s no truly new place on Earth for explorers to pioneer. At 55, he’s tried. “After a conquest of the planet, the 21st Century should be about improving the quality of life,’’ Piccard said. Europe saw Solar Impulse first with a test flight from Switzerland and Spain to Morocco last year. This year’s U.S. flight is another trial run that’s preparation for a 2015 around-the-world trip with an upgraded version of the plane. “We’re flying the most extraordinary airplane in the world,’’ Piccard said. Parts of its wings are three times lighter than paper. Its one-person cockpit is beyond tiny. Most of the 11,000 solar cells are on the super-long wings that

Mega-champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut celebrates his victory. With this year’s victory, Chestnut has now bested his former rival, Takeru Kobayashi, who won six times. Kobayashi competed in a different eating contest Thursday. Thomas went toe-to-toe with Juliet Lee for the $5,000 women’s prize. Thomas finished with 36 and three-quarters dogs; Lee ate 36 wieners. Thomas said the challenge of shovelling down dozens of franks is actually “more mental than physical.’’ “I have to fight with myself, so I’m going to try to really focus,’’ said Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., where she manages a fast-food restaurant. Now in its 98th year, the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest draws crowds of thousands to marvel at contestants cram-
ming frankfurters down their throats. Ginger Perry, 47, of Obion County, Tenn., said she and her family planned their New York City vacation around the contest after watching it on TV in past years. Perry was impressed that Coney Island has recovered so well from being slammed by Superstorm Sandy last October. “It’s amazing to be here and that they rebuilt so quickly,’’ she said. The hot dog contest took place despite concerns about a swaying, shuttered observation tower that spurred the closure of parts of the nearby amusement park. The shutdown didn’t affect Nathan’s, but Coney Island’s famous Cyclone roller coaster and other rides were closed, and workers were using a crane to dismantle the tower.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Josh Anderson announces his passing at the age of 19. Josh was never known to take up much space in a conversation, but what he did say he meant and it usually made you laugh. Josh loved the outdoors and spent all his free time fishing, hunting, dirtbiking, snowmobiling, and hiking. Hockey was a love of his until he discovered hunting and snowmobiling and those quickly took over his fall and winters. He was involved in the Wasa and District 4-H club from the age 6 until he was 16. 4-H instilled many values in Josh that he carried with him throughout his life.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, Cranbrook, BC on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery.
