Horse camps send kids ‘a-loft’ By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
A Christian ministry that began in a barn loft has turned into a summer horse camp for youths. The Loft Country Children’s Horse Camp will host some 450 children this summer — almost double last year’s 273 — and organizers are anticipating 600 to 700 guests next summer. This summer’s program started on July 1 and 50 to 60 children are enrolled
for each four-day session, Mondays to Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The guests work with the horses in the mornings and various events and activities are offered in the afternoons. It’s the brainchild of Trent and Sherry Sultz, who own the 20-acre farm on 248 Street, which has a riding arena and a large meeting room. “We’ve been doing the camps for about ten years, at first just for the church kids, but it was too good, so we expanded
it for the past three years,” says Trent. “We have a lot of repeat customers and word of mouth has been great too.” Trent, who was raised on a Merritt farm, began working as a farrier and horse trainer. He married Sherry, who shows and trains quarter horses, in 1994. Trent had “an encounter with God in 1994” that he says “turned my life around,” and he became an ordained minister. The couple bought the farm on Otter
Two Langley homeowners are scrambling to fix their collapsing back yards after a March landslide revealed unstable soil in the 7900 block of 227 Crescent that runs along the Salmon River. Neighbours Eric Nicholl and Roger Eggert came to Township council Monday to appeal for permission to bypass the usual approval process to shore up the site of the collapse with 8,000 square metres or about 70 truck loads of fill during the dry summer months. “We could potentially lose our homes,” Nicholl said. “The back yards to both our houses are causing actual danger,” said Eggert. Following heavy rain in March, portions of the two back yards dropped 4.5 to three metres coming within eight to 10 metres of the two houses. Other houses in the area were Homeowners Eric Nicholl and not affected. A report filed by the engineer describes the fill as an “unstable” mix of “firm to soft silt” under a one-third metre thick layer of topsoil. The soil is continuing to collapse, the report warns, and goes on to describe the situation as an “emergency” that could cause damage to both houses and contaminate the river. Earlier this year, council revised its soil deposit and removal policy to require approval by at least 80 per cent of local residents for large amounts of fill. The new process takes a minimum of six weeks which means

Loft camps help Emergency fill proposal approved kids to ‘soar high’ FROM FRONT:

Road in 1997 and in 2000 started a weekly ministry in a barn loft that grew so quickly the church rented the Aldergrove Secondary School gym for a few years. The large meeting hall on the farm now accommodates the church and the biggest focus of the congregation is the summer camps for children. “Our glue as a group is to fund the children’s camp. We raise money with our Hat Program to keep it affordable. We hosted 50 kids for free last year and our goal is 100 this year,” says Trent. The Loft also has a Wrangler Program, which is provided free to 13 to 17 year olds. “We train on giving back, for teens who do not ‘fit in’ — it’s very effective, providing leadership, friendship and peer skills to help keep them out of trouble. They are a very welcoming group of 30 kids who meet every Thursday and who are all volunteering,” says Trent. “Eight of them took a challenge to raise $3,500 to send 15 kids to camp, and they did it, with bake sales and fundraisers.” There is a staff of three full-timers and three part-timers, along with
the homeowners would lose their “window” for re-doing the fill during the dry season and would likely lead to more slides during the wet winter months, the engineer predicted. On hearing that, council unani-
30 volunteers for each weekly camp session. The season’s seven camps are primarily for ages seven to 12 and are all coed except for one all-girls week in August. There is also one week of split days, mornings and afternoons for two groups of five and six year olds. Trent, who is also into falconry, demonstrates his birds’ skills in the afternoon sessions, along with dog demonstrations. There is also a playground, waterslide, “rough and tumble” games in the field, drama and dance. There is also a 15 minute chapel service, which has an anti-bullying element. The Loft also hosts Super Sundays, in which the parents join the youths in activities on the farm and in September there is a Roundup, open to neighbors and the community at large. The Roundup features hay and pony rides, shooting galleries, line dancing, barbecue food and music. “Several hundred people attend every year, it’s very popular,” says Trent. “Our phone has been ringing off the hook.” For more information on the Loft and for contact information see their website: www.loftcountry.ca

We took in 301 animals just in the month of June alone,” said Martin. With so much land being developed there just is nowhere left for these animals to live, she said. They have 10 fawns to date. VICTORIA – There’s a new sheriff in town for BC Hydro, and it didn’t take long for the political range war to resume. The new sheriff, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, found himself on the barricades as soon as he got the hugely complex responsibility for energy and mines. His saddlebags bulge with reports on BC Hydro’s seemingly runaway costs, along with Premier Christy Clark’s “core review” to cut $50 million a year from government operations. NDP energy critic John Horgan highlighted the latest BC Hydro troubles in his assault on the B.C. Liberal budget. First there was a $140 million cost overrun on the Northwest Transmission Line, under construction north from Terrace to the tiny Tahltan village of Iskut and adjacent mine properties. Then BC Hydro revealed results of an audit of its earthquake preparedness. “Condition red” was the key message. Basically, the sprawling utility has disaster plans for each of its dams or other power facilities, but no overall way to get the provincial power grid back up after a major earthquake. Horgan recited his list of BC Hydro sins after a decade of meddling by the BC Liberals: huge deferred debt revealed by the Auditor General, enormous liabilities
Get ready for Hydro rate hikes
for private power contracts, and more rate increases that Bennett has already admitted are on the way. And now they can’t even keep us safe from the big one. Bennett fired back. About $2 billion of that debt is for seismic upgrades for the 80-year-old Ruskin Dam in Maple Ridge, and the equally frail John Hart Dam on the Campbell River, built with wooden water pipes. Major BC Hydro works slowed down after completion of Revelstoke and Mica dams in the 1980s, and now the work is more expensive. The Northwest Transmission Line is a partnership with Imperial Metals, which wants to power its Red Chris copper-gold-silver mine. Bennett said the company is not only paying for the last section to Iskut and the mine site, but pitching in for the main line as well. Ottawa paid $130 million to get remote communities off decades of dependence on diesel generators. AltaGas, owner of one of those private power projects in the region, puts in $180 million to get connected to the grid. The line will open up more mining and hydro possibilities. The cost overrun traces back mainly to the shortage of high-skill labour such as geotechnical engineering that the remote region already faces.
And this is before natural gas pipelines and LNG plants gear up. Bennett takes over from the last sheriff, Rich Coleman, who put BC Hydro through the wringer in 2011. Coleman soon abandoned his idea of putting off the Ruskin and John Hart upgrades (again) to keep rates low through the election, and saw the B.C. Utilities Commission jack up the rate increase to seven per cent to help slow the ballooning debt. What’s ahead for rates? The utility is looking for 32 per cent in the next three years, says energy lawyer David Austin. He calculates that only 2.5 per cent is attributable to increased private power costs. Among other things, BC Hydro needs regional emergency centres capable of functioning after a Japan-sized quake, plus expansion. Bennett came clean on another reason for rate increases – the government’s increasing dependence on taking a “dividend” as BC Hydro’s lone “shareholder.” The newly updated budget tells us this annual “dividend” is past $500 million and rising fast: $545 million this year, $611 million next year and $684 million the year after. Editor: Nine years ago Arne Olson said to a number of us in the community, “We’re going to have a Langley Relay for Life,” and he was right. I’ve had the privilege of being a part of the organizing committee since then, and chair for the past six years. The Langleys embraced Relay from the beginning and thanks to that amazing support we quickly became one of the top three in B.C. It’s a “family pajama party” with so many families involved in an overnight, 12 hour adventure of “Celebrating, Remembering and Fighting Back.” It’s especially rewarding to see the number of students that participate and which is somewhat unique to our Relay. That was exemplified by the fund raising achievement of young Malcolm Shields this year, which was nothing short of phenomenal. Over the past nine years Langley Relay has raised well over $3 million to aid in the Canadian Cancer Society’s “cancer battle” and the fight will continue. The feedback from our participants this year was very positive and I’m sure next year will be even better. That said, every annual event needs new energy and new ideas to stay fresh and continue to be successful, and in that regard the organizing committee is always welcoming new members. One thing my many years in music taught me is that it’s important to know when to get off the stage. It’s now with some sadness and regret that I’m going to step back and let that happen. I’ve had the joy and satisfaction of working with so many incredible and dedicated people in my nine years with Relay, and I’ll treasure those memories and experiences always. Langley Relay is very important, not only as a fundraiser but as an event that’s come to represent the caring and generous spirit that makes our community so very special. Thanks for letting me be a part of it Langley. “Really, Relay Great!” Howie Vickberg, Fort Langley
Drug cuts unacceptable
Editor: I have sent the followng letter to Premier Christy Clark. Welcome to the B.C. government’s top position: Premier. How fortunate to be able to come in after the election and start out the day with a huge raise for your people. It must feel good to be able to rule and preside over the taxes that we are paying to keep you in a higher income bracket than the rest of us. I went to get my prescription filled on June 28. What a shock it was to find out that neither Blue Cross nor Pharmacare will no longer pay for my medication. I use asthma medications, and this year when the allergies have been so bad, I almost had to be hospitalized due to the asthma. Cutting coverage of these drugs was not a great idea. Blood pressure medications? Cutting these is just plain ugly, because you and your people have surely caused a lot of the high spikes in my blood pressure of late. Sleeping pills — well I guess I will just stay awake and worry about where the money is coming from to pay my bills, since this was why I got the pills in the first place. Your predecessor Gordon Campbell took away my job and my $30,000 a year wages. He took 15 per cent off my husband’s wages as well. This year, the Hospital Employees Union finally negotiated a raise, after 10 years. And then we find this out. In health care facilities, the unions have filed a grievance over implementation of Pharmacare tie-in. The Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) is challenging the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) on elements of its implementation of the recently-negotiated Pharmacare tie-in, which links members’ prescription drug coverage to the list of drugs covered by the government’s Pharmacare program. In negotiating the plan in the last round of collective bargaining, health unions agreed to a list of Pharmacare drugs, based on confirmation that certain specific drugs would continue to be eligible for reimbursement. But now Pacific Blue Cross is advising some members that they are not covered for these drugs. HEABC has also advised the FBA that members will be reimbursed for drugs, only to a price limit set up under the Pharmacare program. The FBA unions did not agree to those restrictions, and have filed an industry-wide policy grievance to challenge them. The government sure knows how to make us little people feel minute and unimportant. Thank you from a former low middleclass income human, who is now below the poverty line human. By the way, I did not vote for you. Hanne Reid, Aldergrove

Bhatti rides for ‘better lives’ By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
Aldergrove’s Andy Bhatti is gearing up to ride 525 kilometres from Vernon to Vancouver starting Monday -- all to raise awareness and funds to help young victims of sexual abuse. While he will ride some pretty grueling terrain, with hills and perhaps bad weather, he said it’s nothing compared to the life of hiding his sexual abuse behind a heroin-induced crime lifestyle he lived for more than 15 years. “Hey, if I can smoke crack and stay up for days at a time, I can do this,” said Bhatti on Tuesday. “I’m 100 per cent ready. The 32-year-old has come along way from 60 convictions, jail cells and the Downtown Eastside, now rubbing elbows with numerous celebrities, NHL hockey stars, politicians, BC Lions and others, all who have stood behind him in his efforts to raise awareness and funds to help children who have been sexually abused. “That’s the big message: if you have been sexually abused, get help early,” he said. Bhatti wishes he had. “If I can change, anyone can,” he said. “I realized, I can be the change. If you can be a voice to carry this message to even one child, then I have to try.” Bhatti has organized fundraisers along his ride, including one at a pub in Vernon and ending his ride with a dinner gala at the Sheraton Wall Centre on July 20, with celebrity appearances, entertainment by singer Stacey McKitrick. One of the speakers of the night will be the RCMP officer who tracked Bhatti down to tell him his abuser had been caught sexually assaulting two other kids. All proceeds from the $100 tickets to the gala are going to Sophie’s Place in Surrey, a safe place for children who have been sexually abused can come for help. “It’s an amazing organization with really nice people running it,” said Bhatti. “But it’s expensive

Abbotsford Police responded on Sunday afternoon to reports that two kids had been left alone in a car with the windows rolled up. The incident took place at about 5 p.m. at the Real Canadian Superstore on Gladwin Road. A shopper, who sent an email to The Abbotsford News, noticed two children sleeping in a car that had been parked in the sun. None of the windows was open, and there were no adults in sight.

Bhatti’s ride from Vernon to Vancouver will help fund Sophie’s Place, a shelter in Surrey that was started by members of the KISS’s Gene Simmons family. to run and they need money.” Since dedicating funds to Sophie’s Place, he has met with Sophie Simmons several times. Simmons is the daughter of KISS star Gene Simmons who also was in a popular reality show about her family life. Sophie’s mom is from Vancouver and last week KISS donated $10,000 to the centre. To start the ride in Vernon is significant, because that’s where the man who sexually abused him went to live after victimizing him. He went on to sexually abuse two other boys under the age of 10 when he went there. In 2008, Bhatti’s abuser pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexually assault and inviting sexual touching involving three children under the age of 14. In a Vernon court he was sentenced to three years in jail. He has been out of jail for a while. It was in the late 1980s, when Bhatti’s mom signed him up with Langley’s Big Brothers. He already been a part of the orga-
nization and was having a great time. Unbeknown to the Big Brothers organization, he was matched with a predator - and the sexual abuse almost began immediately, lasting four years before Bhatti found the courage to break away. But the damage had been done. By then, Bhatti had been kicked out of schools, acting out violently at every turn, doing drugs to mask the pain. Everyone around him, including his family, thought he had turned into a monster, was a punk kid. Little did anyone know, he was enduring sexual abuse. His life spiraled into hell, where he became a full blown heroin addict by 16 and lived a life of crime and addiction, often calling the Downtown Eastside his home, running from police and with more than 60 convictions, he spent most of his time in jail. But he never told anyone about the abuse. That was until police came knocking on his
door asking him if he was a victim of his Big Brother, after they had arrested the pedophile for abusing the two boys in Vernon. From there he confessed it all, and started getting help. Reaching out for counselling and group therapy through Men of Hope and B.C. Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Society. Bhatti hosted the successful Men of Hope Poker Tournament in April at the Aldergrove Legion. That fundraiser, which saw numerous celebrities and sports stars play and sign autographs, raised $23,000 towards helping male survivors of sexual abuse. Spokes donated two bikes for Bhatti’s ride and Cranky’s in Aldergrove has outfitted him. Bhatti will start his ride out of Aldergrove at the Save-On Foods July 20 at 8:30 a.m. and at the 64 Avenue Save-On Foods at 10:30 a.m. where people are welcome to donate. Or buy tickets to the gala or donate by calling Sophie’s Place at 604-591-5903.

“Temperatures in cars can soar and the children were in grave danger of overheating in such weather,” the person stated. The shopper alerted two store employees, who then ran to the car and banged on the windows to wake up the kids. The older child opened the car doors, while the owner of the vehicle was paged repeatedly. Employees also called 911, and police arrived at the scene. Const. Ian MacDonald confirmed the incident, and said the children in question were
ages 12 and four, and were not siblings. Their two moms had gone shopping and didn’t want to wake them, MacDonald said. He said it is estimated the kids had been in the vehicle for 30 minutes. The moms were warned about the consequences of leaving children in a closed vehicle in the heat, and the Ministry of Children and Family Services was informed of the incident. MacDonald commended those involved for their quick actions, but advised others in similar situations to first

Gasoline fed fire injures Aldergrove Star
An Abbotsford man suffered non-life-threatening injuries after he threw gasoline into a burn barrel on his property at about 9 p.m. Sunday on Peardonville Road near Abbotsford Airport. The man had started a fire in the burn barrel and then added gasoline from a jerry can he had retrieved from his boat. The burst of flame burned his arm and legs. He then carried the jerry can, as it was on fire, across the property, burning the grass along the way. Abbotsford Police arrived first on scene and were able to put out the fires before they got out of control.
Five UN gangsters have pleaded guilty to conspiring to kill the Bacon brothers in 2008 and 2009. Barzan Tilli-Choli, Karwan Ahmet Saed, Ion Kroitoru, Yong Sung John Lee and Dilun Heng entered the pleas on Monday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. Sentencing will take place at a later date. The five had also been charged with the first-degree murder of Langley’s Jonathan Barber, who was gunned down in May 2008 in Burnaby, while driving Jamie Bacon’s vehicle to have some stereo equipment installed, and the attempted murder of Barber’s girlfriend Vicky King, who was following in a separate vehicle. Those charges are being stayed by the Crown. At the time of the conspiracy, the UN Gang and the Red Scorpions — to which the Bacons were aligned — were embroiled in a war for control of the Fraser Valley drug trade. The five were among eight people charged in January 2011 with conspiring to kill the Bacon brothers — Jamie, Jarrod and Jonathan — in the period from Jan. 1, 2008 to Feb. 17, 2009. Co-accused Conor D’Monte and Cory Vallee have been at large since the charges were announced. Both are also wanted in connection with the Feb. 6, 2009 murder of Red Scorpion Kevin Leclair at a Walnut Grove shopping mall. Dan Russell had his case severed
from the others and pleaded guilty in April of this year to the conspiracy charges and to manslaughter in Barber’s death. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Tilli-Choli is also facing charges in a drive-by shooting of Tyler Willock of Langley, which took place in February, 2009 in Surrey. Willock was injured, and later badly beaten by Albert Jackman, who is now in jail after being found guilty of that assault and the murder of Aldergrove resident Kyle Barber on March 28, 2009. During the period of the conspiracy charges, the Bacons were living in Abbotsford. On Jan. 20, 2009, Jamie Bacon was shot at numerous times in broad daylight at the busy intersection of South Fraser Way and Sumas Way. He fled in a black Mercedes SL55 slammed into a stone stairway at a restaurant on West Railway Street, but was not injured. Jamie is currently in prison, serving a seven-year term on weapons offences while awaiting trail in the Surrey Six murders. Jarrod is also in prison, serving a 12-year sentence on conspiracy to traffic cocaine. He has appealed that sentence, seeking a lighter term. The Crown has also appealed, saying the term should be longer. Jonathan was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kelowna in August 2011. Three people have been charged with this murder, but a trial date has not yet been set. — with files from Monique Tamminga

Karter races for top prize By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
A 15 year old high school student from Aldergrove is hoping to make his mark in the world of kart racing this summer. Jordan Redlin has wide and varied interests and maintains a high academic standard at school, but karting is his true love. His ultimate dream is to become a professional touring car driver. Redlin has been racing since he was seven years old and has a number of wins and championships under his belt, from across the continent. So far in 2013 he has six wins and a third place finish in the West Coast Kart Club, and a number of third and fifth place finishes in the Can-Am Challenge’s first and second rounds. Each year a number of tickets are issued to each country in order to qualify for the Rotax World Finals, to be held this year in New Orleans, Louisiana November 13-17. Redlin’s goal is to be one the Canadian finalists in this “Olympics

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities
Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

The orders must be placed by July 19. “We appreciate the support given to Holmberg House by Bob Johnson at Unitex,” said Marion Keys, donor relations and development for the AHS. easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help. Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

‘Power for All’ a healthy outlet for seniors, disabled By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
Alex Thompson’s lifelong passion for kayaking has turned the dreams of disabled persons into reality. And every summer the numbers of participants grows as Thompson shows them that there are no limits or impediments to anyone’s abilities. There is always a solution to every problem. Four years ago, Thompson started the Power for All Adventure Therapy Society, which offers paddling sessions every Saturday at Fort Langley’s scenic and peaceful Bedford Channel. “The first year we had 36 people, the second year we had up to 90,” says Thompson. “They’re mostly adults, but we say it’s for anyone from age nine to seniors.” There are seniors participating, either recovering from injuries or suffering from arthritis or Parkinson’s, and a couple are either deaf or blind. Thompson rents or borrows kayaks and specialized equipment especially suited to a particular client’s needs. For example, she has backboards and two sets of pontoons for the double kayaks, and if a paddler has only one arm she borrows a special kayak fitted
with a one-armed paddle from the similar Power to Be society in Deep Cove. “We don’t have our own boats, we rent them from Evergreen Adventure Society, an extension of Fort Camping on Brae Island,” says Thompson. Evergreen rents the society up to three double kayaks, eight single kayaks, a voyageur canoe and a number of single canoes. This allows Thompson to offer a wide range of outings, tailored to each person’s ability. “We can fit eight to 12 people in the voyageur canoe, depending on their size. The sessions fluctuate quite a bit; if we take a group home out there may be eight to 12 persons in each session, and if they are single clients there may be four to six. “We also have weekdays specials, because if we need to have therapists and physios present it has to be on their workdays.” The cost is only $35 for each client, to cover the costs of rentals and insurance. There is no paid staff as everyone, including Thompson, is a volunteer. “Many of the participants can’t afford to pay more, they’re on limited incomes, so we fund raise for equipment,” says Thompson.
Fraser Health recreation therapist Lindsay Dean has been supporting Power for All from the beginning, by sending clients to the outings, and is now a society director. “She has collected questionnaires so that we know exactly what they like about the program,” says Thompson. “They look forward to it because they enjoy the sense of being in control. They are active, not depressed, and many of the clients also become volunteers.” Volunteers are the lifeblood of the program, and more are welcome.
It will run from July to the end of October at Bedford Channel, with two sessions every Saturday. Every session is dependent on the weather. “If it’s rainy and windy we don’t go out because many of the clients are susceptible to hypothermia,” says Thompson. Thompson invites all interested persons to check out the society’s website (http://powerforalladventuretherapysociety.com/) and to contact her via the email contact page if anyone wishes to participate or contribute to the program.
