Bose Farm development receives council nod By Kevin Diakiw More than 200 trees will be cut down as part of a plan to develop the historic Bose Farm property into a residential development. The 3.69-hectare (9.1-acre) parcel of property at 16420 64 Avenue has been the subject site for a planned residential development for some time. In July of last year, the developer came before Surrey council with a plan to remove 339 trees in a forested area on the property. Opposition from the public was swift and loud. Council sent the plan back for revisions, particularly with

an eye to saving more trees. On March 11, 2013 the proponent came back with a proposal to develop the property (44 single family lots, 249 townhomes, and a park) that would spare 122 of the trees. Several people came to the meeting to speak against the plan. One man said that in July 2012, the public had already spoken and wanted all of the trees preserved. Most others at the meeting also had concerns about the lack of tree retention. A representative for the developers said the building plan underwent significant changes since last year, with an eye to

keeping as many trees as possible. In passing the third reading unanimously (Couns. Barbara Steele and Tom Gill were absent), council thanked the developer for coming up with a plan that preserves both the heritage on the property as well as the trees. Avtar Johl, director with Platinum Enterprises which is developing the property, said last year if he could save any trees, he’d be all for it. “With the road connections to connect the existing roads, it’s proving very difficult,” Johl told Black Press at the time.

work outside the home, making scheduling their children’s extra curricular swimming and hockey activities difficult, in part due to the extra driving time involved getting to facilities in other parts of the city, or even Langley. Bola points out in the past 10 years, Cloverdale’s annual growth rate has been an average of eight per cent, and in just eight years (by 2021) is projected to reach 85,000, making it the fourth largest town centre, after Newton, City Centre, and South Surrey. “It’s going to be 85,000 sooner than later,” says Krasnikoff, who adds it’s time to step up planning for those future recreational and infrastructure needs. The association recently asked the city to approve a FINA-certified, 50-metre pool, and three, arenasized hockey sheets with proper seating in the Cloverdale town centre. The current arena, Bola says,

doesn’t meet existing needs. “We are getting left behind,” Bola says. Cloverdale will be the site of a new $1.1 million, covered skateboard park, complete with basketball courts and other amenities. But to Bola, that’s “just a small piece of the pie.” The association would also like the city to keep growth under control and work with residents and neighbourhoods to manage that growth, whether it’s adding parks, widening streets or lobbying for new schools. Bola notes provincial funding for new schools is approved only once the homes are built. “It’s a backwards philosophy,” Bola says. The association also recently asked City Hall when Cloverdale’s Mound Farm Park will be developed, and this fall will make a presentation to the city’s transportation committee asking that 64 Avenue be widened between 177 Street and Fraser Highway. The association has also voiced objections to small urban lots with carriage homes, containing legal and illegal suites. This fall, the association will be making a presentation before the city’s transportation committee requesting that 64 Avenue be widened between 177 Street and Fraser highway. Keep an eye out for new brochures. The group recently launched a website. For more information, visit www.cloverdalecommunity.org.

“There’s a large amount of cut and fill required on this site.” He said he’d continue working with the city to find solutions for all parties, including the community. As part of the heritage component on the site, Johl has agreed to preserve the Henry Bose farmhouse, milk cooling shed, and calf barn on the heritage property. Ron Sousae, who lives directly beside the Bose Farm, is upset more trees couldn’t be saved. “I’m right on the edge of that forest, and all of our neighbours are pretty much dead set against this,” Sousae said. “We realize we can’t stop the development entirely,” but saving some of the forest for a buffer would have been preferred. Sousae knows there’s not much they can do except appeal to the developer, and that’s what he and his neighbours plan to do. They’ve started a Facebook page called Save the Bose Forest at Facebook.com/SaveTheBoseForest.

Soccer coach seeks votes
Thursday, July 11, 2013 The Cloverdale Reporter 3 19219 56 Ave Surrey BC 604-576-7770
Bobby Samra leads the pack in a ‘Community MVP’ contest; polls close on Friday By Jennifer Lang A Surrey father, school vice principal and soccer coach needs your help to win $10,000 for a charity that’s close to his heart. Bobby Samra, coach of the U-15 Surrey FC Eagles, has been nominated by the Vancouver Whitecaps as their “Community MVP” for using soccer to make a difference in his community. The league-wide contest put each club representative against one another for the chance to win $10,000 donation to the charity of their choice, and a trip to the MLS All-Star mach. As of Tuesday, Samra was in first place, leading a field of 18 community MVPs representing the other 18 MLS teams in North America. Voting has already begun on the community MVP grand
prize. The winner gets to donate the prize money to their charity of choice, and gets to watch an All Star Game in Kansas City live. Samra, vice principal at George Greenaway Elementary in Cloverdale, has been very active as a community soccer coach for more than 25 years. He began coaching soccer to inner city youth when he was just out of high school, and stives to instill a culture of teamwork and acceptance among players of every level. More recently, he’s created a program between the Central City Soccer Club and the Surrey School District. He was nominated for the competition by his wife, who saw the contest being advertised by the Whitecaps on Twitter. “To be honest, I was surprised

when they chose mine because what I do is done as simply part of my belief system,” he said. If he wins, Samra will be donating the money to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or JDRF. Samra’s 14-year-old son, Suneil, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when he was just 6 and is now an ambassador for the foundation. Suneil also plays on his dad’s team. The MLS winner is the person who can get the most on-line votes between July 1 and July 12 at 2 p.m. To vote, visit www.MLSscoccer. com/communitymvp or Facebook. com/MLS. It’s going to be a close race. “I would ve to represent Surrey,” he said. “If I did win, I would be thrilled to donate the money to JDRF.”
Last week’s brief, “City’s plans on the BIA agenda,” July 4, contained the correct meeting date (July 11), but indicated the wrong week. The agenda includes an update on Cloverdale West Village and gateway signage, along with a board election.

Disgusted by how elderly are treated To the editor; Re: “Looking for Change,” June 13 I lost my mom in 2012, and her best friend in 2013. Racing community welcomed my son A re-opened Langley Speedway could co-exist with riding program for special needs children To the Metro Vancouver Parks Committee; I have sat back and watched with interest all the opinions of re-opening Langley Speedway and I would like to share with you my experience as a father of a young man with special needs. I have heard that with a possible re-opening of the speedway there is a chance that this could seriously interfere with the riding program for children with disabilities. My son when he was younger participated in this program and truly enjoyed it, I am not sure what
their operating hours are any more, but I do know that if the track is re-opened it does not start running cars on it until the evening (Saturday) and also with it being every second weekend in the summer I do not believe this is going to be a real disruption as is being let on. I should also share with you that my son has also been part of a pit crew for a racing team and the smile and satisfaction that I see on his face is worth a thousand words and the lessons he receives being part of a team re-
ally helps in his struggles with daily life. This is what a racing community is, they welcome all people in and give them opportunities to succeed in life whether you win or lose on the track. I know you all have a difficult decision to make but I really believe that re-opening of the speedway to a group that is going to contribute dollars back to the park board in the form of rent is more than worth it.

Author serves up second helping of ‘Chicken Soup’ By Jennifer Lang Ritu Shannon was a nervous and uncertain new mom when she picked up a book her husband had given her. It was Chicken Soup for the New Mom’s Soul, and over the span of two days, she read it cover to cover, gratefully absorbing the wisdom and words of other mothers who had poured their stories onto the page. One story in particular struck her. It was “Be Careful What You Wish For,” penned by Mimi Greenwood Knight. Knight wrote about being a mother of three who has just marked her two-year-old son’s first success with potty-training, a day she’d eagerly looked forward to. Or so she thought. No more diapers. No more coupons. No more guilt over preferring disposable to cloth. Then, in a flash, it hit her. What’s the rush? She thought back to the day newborn son Hewson came home from the hospital. The family of five had snuggled contentedly in a pile on the bed. She realized she’d been rushing over her children’s developmental milestones in anticipation of their reaching the next one, and vowed to change her perspective. “I pushed them into learning their colours, their numbers, their alphabet,” she wrote. “Now I wish I could slam on the brakes.” Reading over those lines in her home in Cloverdale, Shannon recognized she was on a similar point on the parental pathway. Like the author, she was growing tired of diaper duty, too. “I remember thinking how I couldn’t wait until my baby girl, Priya, was potty trained,” Shannon writes in a new edition of the Chicken Soup series. “I couldn’t wait until we were past the Anniversary edition baby stage, then the toddler stage, and most definitely could not wait until we were through the terrible twos.” Knight’s advice compelled her to look at it another way. A story based on her experiences,“Just One More

Minute Mommy,” is paired with Knight’s in Reader’s Choice, the Chicken Soup for the Soul Stories that Changed Your Lives, a 20th anniversary edition of the inspirational series. In it, she describes how she learned to treasure and appreciate a nightly bedtime ritual with her daughter. It’s the second Chicken Soup book to feature Shannon’s work, which is very much inspired by her two young children, Priya, now 5, and Keegan, 3. A working mother, Shannon recently rediscovered her passion for writing. Earlier this year, “Big Sister,” the first story she ever wrote, was included in Chicken Soup for Parents. A publishing juggernaut, the Chicken Soup books are mainly stories written by ordinary people who have had extraordinary experiences. Since 1993, more than 100 million books in the series have been sold in Canada and the U.S., and have been sold in 100 countries in 40 languages.

B.C.’ers addicted to smartphones: poll By Jeff Nagel If you own a smartphone and find it hard to put the device down, you’re not alone. A new poll by Insights West found 64 per cent of B.C. adults own one, use it an average of 1.7 hours a day and have an average of 27 apps installed on it. The survey found 18 per cent of B.C. smartphone owners consider themselves strongly addicted to the device – most of those say it’s manageable – and an additional 43 per cent call it “very important” to their lives. Sixty two per cent of smartphone owners check it at least hourly and a compulsive six per cent check it more often than every 10 minutes. Self-described addicts spend an average 2.5 hours a day actively using their phones, the poll found. Insights West president Steve Mossop said the heavy usage shows how profoundly the devices have transformed daily life and quickly become pervasive. “Look at kids and how glued they are to their devices and some of us adults as well,” Mossop said. “It has implications all around, from driving while you’re texting, to social relationships, to impacts on other things you do with your time, like exercise, TV watching and newspaper readership.” According to the poll, more than three-quarters of smartphone owners said that if they left home for the day without their device they’d return home to retrieve it. Among young adults age 18-34, the smartphone ownership rate soars to 86 per cent. Asked what sacrifices they’d make
to avoid giving up their phone for three days, 70 per cent of young adults would rather give up Facebook, 25 per cent would give up computer internet access and 25 per cent said they’d rather be stood up for a date. Just 18 per cent of younger users would give up their device ahead of those alternatives, compared to 26 per cent of users aged 35-54 and 57 per cent of those 55 and up. Checking social media is a common use. A majority of users say they use their smartphone as their main way to use Twitter, more than a computer or a tablet, while a computer was still the preferred way to use Facebook. Actually making phone calls remained the top smartphone use, just ahead of texting. But email, searching for information, taking or sharing photos, checking the weather, researching products or services and using map apps to get directions were also among the most common uses. Smartphone ownership in B.C. now spans nearly two thirds of the population and has surpassed PVRs (52 per cent own one) and MP3 players (55 per cent), while rapidly closing in on landline telephones (71 per cent.) And it’s still climbing. At least a fifth of non-smartphone owners said they intend to get one within the next year. Half of smartphone users have already bought something via the device and more expect to use it for purchases in the future.More than a third of those surveyed said it’s important for them to have the latest smartphone. – Black Press

These members of Clayton Heights Secondary’s graduating class of 2013 are ready for anything – whether it’s grooving on the dance floor or an emergency field hockey game. From left: Daniel Cochran, Kelsey Veinot, Emma McCracken, Emma Cochran, Travis Thoen, Maddy Power, Kaitlin Sandwell, Tanner Shear, Naomi Okada and Tanner O’Neill.
A special night
By Jennifer Lang They are friends, well-rounded athletes and members of the 2013 graduating class of Clayton Heights Secondary. And last month, they got together for a fun, semi-formal photo op, posing in their gowns and tuxedos along with baseball bats and gloves, volley balls, basketballs and hockey sticks – a symbolic homage to their varied athletic endeavours at school and in the community. It was a final hurrah for the friends, including three girls who attended the same elementary school, who are off to separate post-secondary pursuits this fall. Grad Daniel Cochran played soccer for three years, and plays for Cloverdale Minor Hockey, and competed for three years on the school’s golf team. He’s attending University of the Fraser Valley this fall, where he plans to study criminology. Kelsey Veinot played on Clayton Heights’ field hockey team, managed the Night Riders’ bas-
ketball team, and is a former equestrian. She’s attending Simon Fraser University this fall. Emma McCracken played high school basketball for five years, along with volleyball, field hockey and Ultimate. Emma Cochran played with Surrey United for 10 years before moving onto field hockey. She was selected to the U17 Junior national field hockey team and represented B.C. for six years. Last month, she was named Clayton Heights Secondary’s Grade 12 female athlete of the year, and MVP for field hockey. She’s headed to the University of Maine on a field hockey scholarship and is playing on the Canadian junior national team. Travis Thoen played with Cloverdale Minor Hockey and later Langley Minor Hockey, and won the busary at this year’s Langley midget scholarship tournament. Maddy Power was named this year’s Clayton Heights Secondary’s overall female athlete and MVP for volleyball. Along with
high school volleyball, basketball, golf and Ultimate, Power has been a member of the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club since she was 11 (the team won the provincials and placed third in at the nationals), and received the Gordon Shrum scholarship to SFU, where she plans to earn a Bachelor of Science. She’s playing for the NCAA division II volleyball team. Kaitlin Sandwell is an avid field hockey player on both her school and community teams. Tanner Shear was named Grade 12 male athlete of the year. He was a member of his school’s soccer, basketball, volleyball, Ultimate and rugby teams, and played community hockey, soccer and baseball in Cloverdale. Naomi Okada was named MVP for field hockey. She plays field hockey year round for the Surrey Sharks, and also played basketball and Ultimate frisbee. Tanner O’Neill played on the school’s volleyball, basketball and Ultimate teams throughout his high school career.

Something rare and wonderful on the field Identical twins make history with identical grand slams July 1 By Mike Robinson Baseball is a game that has been played for over a hundred years. There have been roughly 180,000 games played in the Major Leagues alone. Many more have been played in the minor leagues, and countless more again in various youth leagues everywhere. It’s no exaggeration to say that millions of organized baseball games have been played. The rarest event in baseball is the perfect game. Major League baseball has recorded 23 perfect games in its 130-plus year history. Yep, the perfect game is indeed a rare and unique event. But last week the Cloverdale Bantam A team experienced a baseball event so strange, so rare, so unique as to make the perfect game seem almost as commonplace as a grounder to short. An event so unlikely, that if you were to pitch it as part of a Disney movie, the executives would scoff and say it was too unrealistic. Fairly extensive online research has shown that it might, in fact, be a unique occurrence that has never happened in baseball before. At any level. Ever. Allow me to explain. The Bantam A Spurs were playing in a tournament over the July 1 weekend in Newton. The coach received an email from the grandmother of two of the players saying she wouldn’t be at the game until later and to tell the boys to “play for Nana.” The young lads in question are identical twins Aidan and Callum MacNicoll (collectively referred to as “The Hippies”, perhaps due to their fascination with Woodstock. No one knows for sure), well known in Cloverdale sporting circles. The Hippies and the

rest of the team agreed that, yes, they would indeed, play for Nana. In the semi-final game played on July 1 they played for Nana all right. In the first inning with two out and bases loaded, Aidan hammered a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center for a grand slam! Nana would be proud. Not to be outdone, Callum came to the plate in the third inning with two out and bases loaded. Not being an identical twin myself, I can imagine that it can get tiresome constantly being compared to your sibling and expected to do identical feats. This, I surmise, is why Callum waited until the count was 2-1 before he hit a grand slam over the fence at the exact same spot! No chance of Nana playing favourites now. Now, I’m not sure how a mathematician would work out the odds of such an occurrence, but I know that extensive research of youth baseball record sites shows sm

nothing like that occurring. Forget that a team having two grannies in a game may tie a record. Two identical twins hitting each of their first grand slams to the same spot in the same game? Wow! This being a tournament, MVP medals were handed out after each game. Normally, you hit a grand slam, you win the MVP. But in a game where two brothers each hit a grand slam? Who should possibly win the MVP? Why, Nana, of course! And so it was that the fans, players, and coaches from both teams applauded as a beaming Nana wore her MVP medal and posed for a photo between two very proud boys holding up their historic baseballs. Everyone knew they had just seen something rare and wonderful. No one truly realized they were witnessing history. Congratulations Aidan and Callum!
– Mike Robinson is the team’s coach.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m., first whistle at 9 a.m., second game at 11 a.m., and third game at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There will be four teams playing round robin, with three games a day, over two days. Tickets are $15 a day (available at the door.) Kids 12 and under are free. Organizers say if you don’t know anything about roller derby, there’s no better place to start than right here.
Callum MacNicholl realizes he’s just hit a grand slam, a home run hit with all three bases loaded, matching an earlier grand slam by his brother, Aidan. Not surprisingly, Cloverdale’s Bantam A Spurs went on to win the tournament.
