Only 11 days after Bill Dyck and Derek Doyle took their concerns about food truck licensing costs to Creston town council, the entrepreneurial pair got their answer. Council held a special meeting on Friday to approve an interim exception to current bylaws regulating mobile vendors. The Purple People Feeder ice cream and hotdog truck can set up in Centennial Park through September. “We can do a more complete review of the bylaw in the fall, but this lets these gentlemen do business this summer,” town manager Lou Varela said. “The response from the town’s staff and council was awesome,” Dyck said at Centennial Park on Monday. “We couldn’t have asked for better support.” Dyck and Doyle presented their case to council on June 25, explaining that under the current bylaw the fee to set up in Centennial Park would be $100 a day. They cited the regulations that have been adopted for mobile food vendors in other B.C. municipalities. Council directed staff to bring back a recommendation as soon as possible. “I think staff did a tremendous job in making this a priority and making sure we were doing this legally,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “We want to encourage business whenever we possibly can.” See TRUCK, page 3

he summer Art in the Library display is going to be a work in progress featuring a number of First Nations artists from the Ktunaxa Territory. The recent floods and road closures made travel difficult and a number of the expected artworks have not arrived, but the exhibit is starting with a selection of pieces from local artists. Many Creston Valley residents are familiar with the wonderful detail work done by Margaux Allard but you will find some charming boy’s moccasins, lovely beadwork earrings by Alisha Louie, and a fascinating painting by Cranbrook artist Marisa Phillips (above). Grooming business fills empty space at mall BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor An expanded Hound ’n’ Mouser has filled one of several empty spaces at the Creston Valley Mall. The formerly home-based grooming business has expanded to now offer food, toys and supplies. “I really love grooming, but I always wanted a mom and pop store,” said owner and groomer Laryssa Pugh. “It was really hard telling people their dog was matted, then sending them down the street to buy a comb.” She also wanted to create jobs and so far has two part-time employees in the shop, which has lines of grain- and preservative-free foods — including raw food made in Cranbrook. Various local businesses have donated door prizes to the store’s grand opening, which runs all day Saturday.

taken off in lots of communities,” he said. “Consumers like them and they make sense if the regulations respect the existing businesses.”

Prince Charles Secondary School grads Gord and Alicia Perrin continue to make their names in the highest levels of volleyball. Both play on Canadian national teams that have advanced to championship rounds. “I just talked to Alicia and her team is headed for Kazan, Russia, to play in FISU,” Alicia’s father, Dave Perrin, said on Monday, referring the the International University Sports Federation, a biennial between-Olympics athletic competition in which participants must also be university students. Meanwhile, Alicia’s older brother, Gord, is playing with Canada’s senior men’s team, which just won the C pool to progress to the finals of the FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) world league championships in Argentina. After a shaky start in which Canada split two sets with the

Netherlands, Gord’s team rolled over its next four opponents, defeating Portugal, Korea, Finland and Japan. Canada lost only two games — one each to Portugal and Finland—in winning two three-game matches against each. Canada played Japan this week, winning both matches and clinching top spot in the C Pool. “Right now Gord is 12th in scoring among all players, but not all of the A and B pool games have been played, so he will probably drop down a bit,” Dave said. “But he’s played tremendously well.” In Argentina, which brings all pool winners into the finals, Canada “will be going up against pretty much the best in the world.” Alicia is one of 12 Canada senior women’s volleyball women who are representing their country at FISU in Russia. Algeria has dropped out of the foursome including Canada, leaving Alicia’s team with only Norway and Brazil to play in its grouping.

Suspect identified in two-week theft spree

Creston RCMP spent another week responding to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, but a suspect has been identified in the two-week-long spree, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. “Thanks to the good work of one of our officers we believe we have identified one of the thieves and the investigation continues,” he said. Police suspect two or more people have been roaming the streets at night, testing vehicle doors. They search the unlocked ones for valuables, and more than 20 reports have been received from town residents.

Police Beat Creston police responded to 86 calls for service from July 1-7, Gollan said. July 1 •Police were unable to locate ATVs reported to be racing on Canyon-Lister Road. •A silver Nissan reported to be driven by a possibly intoxicated driver was not located. •A report came from Canyon Street from someone who heard a female yelling, “Don’t touch me!” No one in distress could be found in the area. •A Good Samaritan found a dog on Northwest Boulevard in distress from the heat. He took it to the RCMP station. The owner was located and the dog was returned.

Lawrence Grossman was 53 years old. •Two packs of gum and an Alberta vehicle registration were stolen from an unlocked vehicle on Elm Street. •Police set up a roadblock on Highway 3 after receiving a report of a dozen motorcyclists driving recklessly through Moyie. The group never arrived, possibly having continued south into the U.S. through Kingsgate. July 4 •Two cameras were stolen from an unlocked vehicle on 25th Avenue South. •A single vehicle accident caused significant damage, but no injuries to occupants, on Highway 3 near Yahk. •CDs were stolen from a vehicle on 25th Avenue South. The vehicle was locked, but a window was left open. •Seventy-five-year-old Myron Ballard died suddenly of apparent natural causes at his home on Fowler Street in Riondel. •Police were unable to locate the source of shots fired in the 48th Street area. •A vehicle collided with a deer on Nick’s Island Road. •No one was home when police arrived to conduct a well-being check on a Riondel resident on Eastman Avenue. •A blue Chevrolet pickup reported to be driven by an intoxicated male on Highway 3 was not located. •A dark-coloured import vehicle was reported to be driving at high speeds on Hagy Road. July 5 •Vehicles were entered at two Erickson Road residences but no thefts were noted. •A male motorcyclist from Germany lost control of his motorcycle on Highway 3/95 and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to hospital. •Binoculars found at Lewis Bay Road in Boswell can be claimed by the owner at the police station. •A well-being check on a Cedar Street resident revealed all was well. •A female called 911 when her unwelcome ex-boyfriend arrived at her Third Avenue South residence. He left before police arrived. •A 16th Avenue North landlord reported being harassed by a tenant who was being evicted. •Police attended an 11th Avenue South residence to help emergency health services with a medical patient. •Two people were hospitalized after their speeding vehicle missed a curve on Highway 3A. A matter of respect

It’s a conundrum of the sort that even King Solomon might have struggled with. When I learned about a recent letter to some local residents who use home support services my stomach churned a bit. “This letter is to notify you that the service you currently receive from Creston Home Support Service will no longer be delivered in a manner that reflects your gender specific preference,” the letter starts. It seems that until last month, clients could specify that their home care support worker would be a male or female. “Beginning June 7, 2013, a female or a male community health worker will be attending to offer you the services you currently receive including personal care and bathing. “If you determine that you are not able to accept care from either gender, we will not be able to offer you the services you currently receive. You would have the option of hiring a private worker should you determine that you require gender specific services. “We understand that this may be a difficult adjustment to make however we expect that all of our community health workers, regardless of their gender, provide care in the same professional and considerate manner whether they are caring for a client of the same gender or not.” The letter was delivered to my office by a friend of its recipient, a

woman in her 80s who is appalled at the thought of receiving such intimate services from a male. My first thought was that a hospital patient has no option about
