Only 11 days after Bill Dyck and Derek Doyle took their concerns about food truck licensing costs to Creston town council, the entrepreneurial pair got their answer. Council held a special meeting on Friday to approve an interim exception to current bylaws regulating mobile vendors. The Purple People Feeder ice cream and hotdog truck can set up in Centennial Park through September. “We can do a more complete review of the bylaw in the fall, but this lets these gentlemen do business this summer,” town manager Lou Varela said. “The response from the town’s staff and council was awesome,” Dyck said at Centennial Park on Monday. “We couldn’t have asked for better support.” Dyck and Doyle presented their case to council on June 25, explaining that under the current bylaw the fee to set up in Centennial Park would be $100 a day. They cited the regulations that have been adopted for mobile food vendors in other B.C. municipalities. Council directed staff to bring back a recommendation as soon as possible. “I think staff did a tremendous job in making this a priority and making sure we were doing this legally,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “We want to encourage business whenever we possibly can.” See TRUCK, page 3

he summer Art in the Library display is going to be a work in progress featuring a number of First Nations artists from the Ktunaxa Territory. The recent floods and road closures made travel difficult and a number of the expected artworks have not arrived, but the exhibit is starting with a selection of pieces from local artists. Many Creston Valley residents are familiar with the wonderful detail work done by Margaux Allard but you will find some charming boy’s moccasins, lovely beadwork earrings by Alisha Louie, and a fascinating painting by Cranbrook artist Marisa Phillips (above). As the summer progresses organizers hope to add art by Karen Friedlander, Julie Draper, Mike White, Dustinnaya Duteau

summer kids’ event, Athens: Paul’s Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth, will be hosted at Redeemer Lutheran Church from July 15-19. Kids ages 5-12 can step back in time at Athens, exploring some of the adventures the Apostle Paul faced. They participate in a memorable Bibletimes marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bibletimes snacks and visit Paul. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God sightings. Each day concludes at celebration, a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. Kids and adults at Athens VBS will join with Salvation Army and the Canadian Bible Society reaching out to needy kids in the Lower Mainland through a hands-on mission project called the Pack for Life. The brightly coloured packs are filled with essential school supplies and a Bible. Athens will run from 9-11:45 a.m. each day. For more information or to pre-register, call 250-428-9100.

Grooming business fills empty space at mall BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor An expanded Hound ’n’ Mouser has filled one of several empty spaces at the Creston Valley Mall. The formerly home-based grooming business has expanded to now offer food, toys and supplies. “I really love grooming, but I always wanted a mom and pop store,” said owner and groomer Laryssa Pugh. “It was really hard telling people their dog was matted, then sending them down the street to buy a comb.” She also wanted to create jobs and so far has two part-time employees in the shop, which has lines of grain- and preservative-free foods — including raw food made in Cranbrook. Various local businesses have donated door prizes to the store’s grand opening, which runs all day Saturday.

Owner Laryssa Pugh at the new Hound ’n’ Mouser.

The new store has been open less than two weeks, but the response has already been positive. “A lot of people like the change,” said Pugh. “We’re getting lots of positive feedback. They can drop off their dog, go and get their groceries and the dog’s been groomed.”

Truck fee fair, says owner

From page 1 Under the interim agreement passed unanimously by town council, the vendors will pay $150 for the seasonal license. Dyck, who owns the

truck, said he thinks the charge is fair and that he hopes the current bylaw will be amended to make Creston more mobile vendor friendly. “Food trucks have really

taken off in lots of communities,” he said. “Consumers like them and they make sense if the regulations respect the existing businesses.”

Prince Charles Secondary School grads Gord and Alicia Perrin continue to make their names in the highest levels of volleyball. Both play on Canadian national teams that have advanced to championship rounds. “I just talked to Alicia and her team is headed for Kazan, Russia, to play in FISU,” Alicia’s father, Dave Perrin, said on Monday, referring the the International University Sports Federation, a biennial between-Olympics athletic competition in which participants must also be university students. Meanwhile, Alicia’s older brother, Gord, is playing with Canada’s senior men’s team, which just won the C pool to progress to the finals of the FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) world league championships in Argentina. After a shaky start in which Canada split two sets with the

Netherlands, Gord’s team rolled over its next four opponents, defeating Portugal, Korea, Finland and Japan. Canada lost only two games — one each to Portugal and Finland—in winning two three-game matches against each. Canada played Japan this week, winning both matches and clinching top spot in the C Pool. “Right now Gord is 12th in scoring among all players, but not all of the A and B pool games have been played, so he will probably drop down a bit,” Dave said. “But he’s played tremendously well.” In Argentina, which brings all pool winners into the finals, Canada “will be going up against pretty much the best in the world.” Alicia is one of 12 Canada senior women’s volleyball women who are representing their country at FISU in Russia. Algeria has dropped out of the foursome including Canada, leaving Alicia’s team with only Norway and Brazil to play in its grouping.

Suspect identified in two-week theft spree

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP spent another week responding to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, but a suspect has been identified in the two-week-long spree, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. “Thanks to the good work of one of our officers we believe we have identified one of the thieves and the investigation continues,” he said. Police suspect two or more people have been roaming the streets at night, testing vehicle doors. They search the unlocked ones for valuables, and more than 20 reports have been received from town residents.

Police Beat Creston police responded to 86 calls for service from July 1-7, Gollan said. July 1 •Police were unable to locate ATVs reported to be racing on Canyon-Lister Road. •A silver Nissan reported to be driven by a possibly intoxicated driver was not located. •A report came from Canyon Street from someone who heard a female yelling, “Don’t touch me!” No one in distress could be found in the area. •A Good Samaritan found a dog on Northwest Boulevard in distress from the heat. A matter of respect

It’s a conundrum of the sort that even King Solomon might have struggled with. When I learned about a recent letter to some local residents who use home support services my stomach churned a bit. “This letter is to notify you that the service you currently receive from Creston Home Support Service will no longer be delivered in a manner that reflects your gender specific preference,” the letter starts. It seems that until last month, clients could specify that their home care support worker would be a male or female. “Beginning June 7, 2013, a female or a male community health worker will be attending to offer you the services you currently receive including personal care and bathing. “If you determine that you are not able to accept care from either gender, we will not be able to offer you the services you currently receive. You would have the option of hiring a private worker should you determine that you require gender specific services. “We understand that this may be a difficult adjustment to make however we expect that all of our community health workers, regardless of their gender, provide care in the same professional and considerate manner whether they are caring for a client of the same gender or not.” The letter was delivered to my office by a friend of its recipient, a

woman in her 80s who is appalled at the thought of receiving such intimate services from a male. My first thought was that a hospital patient has no option about

Careless use of campfires is one of the leading causes of forest fires. Prepare your campfire by removing all leaves, twigs and other flammable material from the area. Choose a proper fire pit or make a ring of rocks at least three metres from trees, shrubs, structures and debris. Don’t leave a campfire unattended, and do keep a pail of water close by at all times. Be certain your campfire is completely extinguished before you go to bed or leave the area. Pour water on the fire and douse the site thoroughly. Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to the touch. For more information on how to prevent forest fires, visit www.bcwildfire.ca

Same-gender care needed for seniors

To the Editor: How many of you know that on May 24, a letter was sent to Creston seniors who were receiving home support care advising that effective June 7, Creston Valley Home Support Services would no longer be providing gender-specific personal care and bathing. The option was given to hire a private worker if this was unsatisfactory to them. I guess the assumption was made that everyone could afford to do so. The wording of the letter does not leave room for discussion. It is very much as “this is the way it is going to be” letter. Does it bother anyone else that our seniors are treated this way? Surely we understand that the personal privacy of our loved ones needs to be understood. I am uncomfortable when I need to have a male doctor attend to any female issues, and I assume the same is true vice versa. It doesn’t matter how professional or well trained they are. How much more uncomfortable must personal bathing and toilet tasks be, especially for seniors who were raised in a culture where they did not expose themselves, even at the beach? For some seniors, this may not be an issue. However, for some, this may be too disturbing and cause undue stress on an already fragile mental state. Is there not some way to alleviate this situation for those who will just not be able to adjust because this is just not a part of who they have even been? Why does this have to happen? Surely with some creative thinking and consultation with the seniors themselves, another solution exists. Doreen Rogne Creston

Society has researched housing land

To the Editor: (Re: “Housing location poorly thought out”, June 27 Advance) The Creston Valley Community Housing Society spent the past five years researching and developing the proposal that we recently submitted to BC Housing and Columbia Basin Trust for grant funding. Needs and demand assessments pointed to a shortage of affordable family housing. Most of the rental units available in Creston are one- or two-bedroom units and are not geared towards families. Once we identified family housing as a priority, we looked for an appropriate site. We considered and rejected several sites during that time — generally because the property was either too far away from the town core, unavailable or too expensive. People familiar with the former Crestbrook property believe that, like the nearby 24 units of low-cost seniors

housing, the site just south of Millennium Park would be buildable. The site is fully serviced with all major utilities either on-site or readily available. As soon as core funding is confirmed, a geotechnical assessment will be undertaken to confirm the environmental considerations. If the site fails, the project won’t proceed at that site. The next step in the process was to come up with a suitable site design. Members of our design team, including local architect Christine Ross, worked on Millennium Park years ago. It was important to the team and to the Town of Creston that the site plan enhance Millennium Park, not detract from it. We believe that the plan we’ve arrived at, with its generous green space and landscaping, will do just that. Noise from children playing next door will be no more disruptive than noise from other adjacent amenities such as the bike park, Prince Charles Secondary School, local truck traffic or the neighbouring railroad. Mr. Reider expresses concern that children living in our complex will be stigmatized. Over the past five years, we have consulted extensively with Creston organizations that serve our children; none of them shared that concern. Bullying is a serious problem throughout our society. Children (and adults) are bullied for a variety of reasons. Perhaps if our proposed development was the stereotypical affordable housing project — dirty, dangerous and poorly managed — this might be the case. Of all the affordable housing complexes our group visited, none resembled this stereotype in any way. On the contrary, research done by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation shows that children who move into social housing experience less stress, have better nutrition and are more successful in school than prior to moving into social housing. (CMHC Research Highlight, July 2010) According to the Canadian Medical Association, “For children in particular, the strong and frequent bombardment of ‘toxic stress’ from living in substandard housing with adults who are also stressed can set the stage for lifelong damage.” (May 2013 conference, as reported by CBC) We can’t protect our children from all bullying, but we can help make sure they grow up in safe, affordable, healthy housing. The key is good planning and good management. The RCMP have participated in our planning process and are bringing their expertise on design and management of a safe complex. All the existing Creston subsidized housing complexes, none of which fit the stereotype, have offered their expertise. The tenant selection committee has developed selection criteria to ensure that potential problem tenants are screened out, and that the tenants understand their responsibilities to their neighbours, both internally and externally. If core funding is approved and the site passes the geotechnical requirements, the Creston Valley Community Housing Society will be hosting additional public meetings. We invite you to come, meet the proponents of the project, learn about the process we’ve undertaken and see the plan. We would welcome you to work with us to help the children and families of the valley. Heather More, Chair C.V. Community Housing Society

Committee praised for bird fest

To the Editor: Thank you to the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight on the inauguration of its first Creston Valley Bird Fest. Tanna Patterson and her organizational team co-ordinated an exceptional program for bird watching, guided expeditions and bird conservation, as well as a full circuit of food, music, art, photography and Brian Keating’s excellent habitat presentation. Recently, Peter Mansbridge of CBC reported on the decline of birds in Canada. What a sad day it would be if we were to look up at the skies and not see or hear any birds! I was very fortunate to see a shimmering green hummingbird greeting me by my window on the very first day of the festival. As stewards of our Earth, even our smallest actions determine the sustainability of our habitat and all animal life. We are lucky to enjoy the birds, wildlife, plants, beauty and peace in our Creston Valley. We look forward to the second bird festival. Anjanee Gyan-Dyck Creston

Fundraiser pic sends bad message

To the Editor: (Re: “Caught on tape”, page 1, July 4 Advance) I was shocked when I saw the photo and read the cutline. What is the message to the community? That making someone helpless and silent is OK? What about people who are already being abused or have been abused? What will they think when even seeing the picture? What are we teaching our children? Will some even be fearful going to school? What about children who cannot read but see the picture? I’m sure an alternative activity for fundraising could have been found. Students have lots of ideas. However unintentional, this news item gave a very negative message. Surely our educators, parents and the media have a responsibility to see the bigger picture of abuse and be aware of the impact our actions may have. I also felt the activity was overly dramatized by the Advance by enlarging the picture, and putting it in colour on the front page. Well, I’m sorry but I don’t think it was amusing or funny. I think making someone helpless and silent is abusive and unacceptable, even in jest or to raise funds for a good cause. And what a golden opportunity the parents and teachers missed to teach the children why it is not OK! Clearly, there is more community awareness about abuse issues that needs to be done in Creston. A closer look at bad Samaritans

Have you ever had a problem on your hands that had no solution? I did. In fact, I do. Let me share what I came up with. There are certain puppet masters, a chameleon politician, a few opportunists, some unaware participants, innocent bystanders and indifferent or tranquilized citizenry. The puppet masters gave birth to a sick idea of bringing an expensive “service” of questionable value to the taxpayers. Opportunists jumped on, the chameleon politician obliged, scheming started and rolled on — until we exposed the fraudsters. They backed off. Now, some years later, they came back with the same freshly painted carrot. Why does this problem have no solution? Because after last time, one would say that taxpayers will be on alert, up in arms, kicking the fraudsters in the shins. Guess what? There is virtual silence except the bold, shameless, arrogant chameleon and opportunists trumpeting this “new” so-called service once again as if the world has never heard of it before. I warned the chameleon politician almost a year ago that those opportunists are emperors without clothes, investors without money, and that putting them into the driver’s seat is a bad idea. That’s where I stopped for good and let spin doctors do what they want to do, letting the tranquilized complacent populace get

what they “ask” for. After all is said and done, they will fall flat on their faces and I might regain my fighting spirit once more. Of course, it will be for other causes than the above-mentioned, because by then it will be too late to change anything.

Twelve practices to reduce stress

It’s the little mindfulness moments that we add to our daily routine that enable us to reduce stress. Here are 12 practices that, if introduced into your day, will result in lower stress levels.

A

Zen's-Eye View Kuya Minogue

1. Take a few minutes in the morning for quiet meditation. Sit or lie down and be with yourself. Better still, join the 7-7:45 a.m. Monday through Saturday mindfulness meditations at the Creston zendo. If the weather is warm and sunny and the air free of annoying insects, we sit in the Japanese garden. In more challenging outdoor conditions, we sit inside the zendo. No experienced is needed. 2. While driving, become aware of tension in your body. Are you hands wrapped tightly around the steering wheel? Are your shoulders raised, your stomach tight? You can dissolve tension by noticing and letting go. Remember, being tense doesn’t improve your driving. 3. Every so often during the day, turn your attention inward and notice your breath as it goes in and out. Pay particular attention to the still quiet moment between the in-breath and the out-breath. 4. At lunch, do something different: take a walk or take 15 minutes to just sit and be quiet, observing and letting go of thoughts and feelings that enter your mind. 5. Use the everyday cues in your environment as mindfulness bells and take the time to “centre” yourself. When the telephone rings, let it ring three times before answering and during that time, just notice your breath. Each time you sit down at your computer, before taking it out of sleep mode, do a quick body scan to notice and release any tension. 6. Choose to eat one or two lunches per week in silence, chewing slowly and bringing full awareness to the smell, taste and textures of what you are eating. 7. At the end of the workday, review your activities of that day, congratulating yourself for what you’ve accomplished and letting go of mistakes. 8. Pay attention to the movement of your legs and arms on the short walk to your car. Notice the feelings in your ankles, knees and hips as you shift your weight from one foot to the other. Can you walk without feeling rushed? 9. Before putting your car in gear, sit quietly, and consciously make the transition from where you are to where you are going. Take a moment simply enjoy the moment. Whether you are heading into a pleasant situation or an unpleasant one, the feeling of enjoying the transition will enhance your experience. 10. While driving, notice if you’re rushing. What does this feel like? What could you do about it? Remember, you’ve got more control than you can imagine. 11. When you park your car, take a minute to come back to the present. Orient yourself to being fully present within the upcoming situation, no matter what it is. 12. Before going to bed each evening, put down your book, step away from your computer, find a place where you can enjoy solitude, and take 10 minutes to be quiet and still. hen Ian and Kyersten Kerr moved to West Creston nine years ago, their plan was simple: leave the commercialization of the Okanagan and start a farm to create a closer connection to their food. But living off the land became so enticing that eventually their simple plan became Story and less, well, simple. photo by Mountain Harvest Farm offers organic Brian Lawrence Berkshire pork, raw honey and grass-fed lamb — and for the their personal use, they also raise turkeys and heritage chickens, have Jersey cows for fresh milk, and have a large garden for fresh vegetables and herbs, which results in a lot of canning, drying and freezing. “It kind of snowballed,” admitted Ian. Not that they would have it any other way. “There’s nothing better than sitting down at dinner when everything on the plate is yours,” said Ian. “We actually became political vegetarians because of stories about commercial farms,” said Kyersten. As meat lovers, however, that stance couldn’t last forever, and growing their own seemed like the best option. But they wanted to extend the benefits beyond themselves. “When we made the choice to live this way, we wanted to support the local economy and know what we were eating,” said Ian. To that end, their meat is more than just certified organic — it’s a truly local product, fed with nothing from outside the Creston Valley. Grain, peas and lentils from Roy and Sherry Lawrence’s farm feed the hogs, chickens and turkeys, and alfalfa and hay for the cows comes from Meekes

Kyersten and Ian Kerr with 15-month-old Lily and 1,000-pound Sambo.

Farms. Their lambs are raised on a local farmer’s organic pasture, and everything is butchered in the valley. And although their sausage and other pork products are made a little farther away, in Kimberley, the garlic in them comes from Mo and Mikey Farms. “That’s important to us, and we strive to keep it that way,” said Ian. As with over a dozen regional farmers, their products bear the Kootenay Mountain Grown label, having been cer-

tified through the program developed by the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society. The farmers appreciate the KMG system because it offers a grassroots, rather than bureaucratic, approach to certification. “It’s a farmer who knows farming coming to your door, not a pencil pusher,” said Kyersten. Their choice to farm organically has been a success, with customers, the butcher and clients — such as Nelson’s

Kootenay Co-op — all expressing their appreciation for the quality of the meat. One of the biggest compliments, Ian said, came from an elderly man, who said the Mountain Harvest sausage tastes like sausage from 70 years ago. Ian and Kyersten raise Berkshires, which are given a lot of room to roam in wooded pastures, and the end result is a bit different to other pork. “Their meat marbles naturally, so it’s akin to Angus beef,” said Kyersten. Another difference is that the meat has a much thinner layer of fat, stemming from the pigs’ local diet, which is lowprotein, with no soy or genetically modified food added. “They’re not eating steak and eggs, they’re eating Caesar salad and French toast,” said Ian. While normally-fed Berkshires are usually ready to harvest at four to six months, the Mountain Harvest Berkshires take eight or nine months to be ready — soy doesn’t give them the hormonal boost used to churn out product on a commercial farm. Of course, if they’re allowed to mature, they can grow bigger — much bigger, as in the case of Sambo, their 1,000-pound boar who likes being petted like a dog, with a gentle disposition belying his size. Altogether, Mountain Harvest offers 75 pork products, available at the farm near the southern end of Reclamation Road, including all of the expected cuts, and varieties of scratch-made brats, pepperoni, bangers, salami, smokies, breakfast sausage and much more. The meat also comes in freezer packs, with one offering 25 pounds of chops, roast, sausage and ham. Another adds ribs and ground to that, and then there’s the Homesteader — half a hog. In the fall, the Ian and Kyersten will add more space for pigs on their 10-acre property, allowing them to further develop their farming philosophy, which they’re happily passing on to their 15-month-old daughter, Lily, and, early next year, her new brother or sister. “Ultimately, it affects us and future generations,” said Kyersten. “In order for them to have the Earth, we have to start to take care.” And while it involves a lot of work to return to traditional farming methods, it’s all worth it. “I love the challenge of what it takes to grow the best food in the world — in the world,” said Ian. Castlegar duo playing at Snoring Sasquatch SUBMITTED

Motes and Oats, a Castlegar duo named the best folk-country act in this year’s Kootenay Music Awards, brings their powerful harmonies and feel good songs to Creston’s Snoring Sasquatch on July 19. Melissa McCready and Shannon Moldenhauer co-write original songs inspired by their own lives. Over the last year, the duo has played around Western Canada in Nelson, Trail, Rossland, Grand Forks and Regina. With help from the Columbia Basin Trust, Motes and Oats released their debut EP, Simple Things (2012), which has been played by CBC and community radio. In the summer of 2012, Motes and Oats appeared live on Kootenay Co-op Radio on The Times They Are A Changing with Bonnie Baker. McCready (Motes) grew up in London, Ont., and was inspired by sing-a-longs that regularly took place at family gatherings. When she was six, she began begging for a guitar, and when she received one from her parents she taught herself to play. At 10, McCready took the city bus to St. Mary Choir and Orchestra School where she learned proper singing technique and classical violin. After four years of training, she returned to her home school and

formed a band with her brother called Karma. Upon graduating high school, McCready moved to Vancouver and recorded her first CD, The Paradox Project. In 2009, McCready moved to the Kootenays to follow her dream of beginning a co-operative farm with friends. She continues to pursue this dream along with music, work and school. Moldenhauer (Oats) originates from Regina, Sask., and was also surrounded by music at a young age. Although her father claims to be tone deaf, her mother was always interested in the arts and inspired Moldenhauer to explore her interests. After hearing the renowned Regina Pride of the Lions Band for the first time when she was 10, she was instantly in love with the idea of playing flute. After spending nine years as a part of that band, along with various choirs, private flute lessons and the South Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra, Moldenhauer pursued a bachelor’s degree in music, majoring in education at the University of Victoria. Teaching music in schools all across B.C., including Nelson, Prince Rupert, Nakusp, Trail and the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre, Moldenhauer Some things are just better together. now resides and teaches music in Castlegar.
