Based on descriptions of the pup provided by Baron, the rescue centre suggested the pup had been born prematurely. “They said it probably wouldn’t have survived if its mother took it into the water, as it wasn’t able to regulate its body temperature yet,” said Leine. The crew continued to watch for the mother throughout the day. But as the shift drew to a close, and with the Canada Day long weekend ahead, a decision had to be made about the little seal’s fate. “It couldn’t stay

Council Meeting Port Hardy parking area. Coun. Rick Marcotte commented that, “This would be mainly for school children coming from Eagle View to the beach. It seems appropriate.” Coun. Janet Dorward, acting as mayor in the absence of Mayor Bev Parnham, had a few reservations. She acknowledged the idea was a good one but said she was “concerned about the visibility if you’re coming from the northwest (from Tsulquate towards the clock).” Coun. Marcotte pointed out that the motion included signage for the crosswalk and drivers should take heed of posted signs. The acting mayor agreed, describing the motion as “a very good idea.” The council approved the motion.

The SPF number on sunscreens is a measure of how much UVB (sunburn-causing) radiation it blocks. Theoretically, a lotion with an SPF of 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays. An SPF of 30 blocks about 97%. If you have fair skin and burn quite easily, that extra 4% will provide extra protection. However, the important point about sunscreens is to reapply after swimming or if you sweat a lot. Weight-gain is one of the reasons people hesitate to stop smoking. However, the benefits of better heart health far outweigh the gaining of 5-10 pounds. Stopping smoking also lowers risk of diabetes. So if you are thinking of breaking the tobacco habit, don’t worry about gaining a bit of weight. You will be healthier in the long term. One good habit to get into during summer’s hot days is to drink water rather than sweetened soft drinks. One can of non-diet soft drink can contain sweetening products equal to up to 8 of those bags of sugar you find on restaurant tables. Water is a better choice to quench that summer thirst.

Tech to link North Island classrooms Gazette staff PORT HARDY— Approval of the budget bylaw for the coming school year was among the actions taken by the School District 85 Board of Trustees in its final meeting of the 201213 school year. Total revenues for 2013-14 are $20,409,459, a drop of nearly $700,000 from last year as student enrolment continues to fall in the District. Total expenditures are set at $20,386,710, reflecting a net surplus of nearly $23,000. Video classes A $20,200 pilot project that will link students at Port Hardy and North Island secondary schools via videoconference was approved for the 201314 school year. The Connected Classrooms pilot project, designed by PHSS teacher D’arcy Deacon and Trustee Danita Schmidt, will be used for Science 10, English 10 and English First Peoples 10 courses in the coming year. With in-kind and on-hand contributions worth $11,200, the program will cost the District $9,000. After presenting the proposal, Schmidt recused herself from the discussion and vote, which was unanimous. Earlier this spring, SD85 approved aligning the bell schedules for the two high schools, in part to facilitate simultaneous instruction of students
on each campus. “Declining enrolment in the school district has led to reduction in the number and range of courses/programs offered in the secondary schools,” the authors noted in their proposal. “The primary goal of this project is to be able to offer senior-level courses yearly instead of every other year.” Classrooms in each school will be outfitted with SMART boards, videoconferencing software and microphones and upgraded PCs, and teachers involved in the pilot project will receive training. The project will also have multiple reviews, including teacher and student surveys, to determine its effectiveness. Schmidt hopes the Connected Classrooms project is just the first step in expanding educational opportunities for the North Island’s students. “This can be much bigger than simply connecting our two high schools,” she said. “Other schools bring in experts from around the world.” Electoral review scheduled The new trustee electoral makeup, expected to go into effect in time for the 2014 municipal election, should be reviewed in January 2018, trustees agreed. Recognizing the board in 2018 may be made up of different trustees than currently
sit at the table, members agreed it would be prudent to schedule regular reviews of the board structure after changes, approved in May, go into effect. The recommended change, which requires ministry approval, will designate three trustees for a “north zone” made up of Port Hardy, Coal Harbour and the current Western Zone, and four more trustees for the “south zone”, with two selected by voters in Port McNeill and two voted on by all other areas in the zone, including Alert Bay, Sointula, Port Alice and Woss. It would mark the first change in more than 22 years, and was approved only
School Board after a series of community consultations and extensive series of debates and failed motions over several board meetings. The current board believes regular reviews of the trustee electoral areas will allow future boards to stay on top of demographic changes and more easily make adjustments deemed necessary. The 2018 review will follow the next census, in 2016, and the fall 2017 municipal election. Board chair Leightan Wishart also shared a copy of the letter he submitted to Don McRae, Minister

of Education, outlining the changes to trustee electoral areas approved by the board. Hot and cold A potentially costly change to an upgrade of the heating system at North Island Secondary School may have opened the door to a heat-swapping solution that will also benefit nearby Chilton Regional Arena. The school district received a low bid of $797,000 on the project from Archie Johnstone Plumbing and Heating, but its construction schedule would not have the work finished during summer break. When SD85 requested the project be split into two parts, over two summers, Johnstone Vancou
added $100,000 to its tender. “During negotiations, we were approached by the RDMW, and they have just the opposite problem at the arena. In trying to cool the arena, they generate waste heat. “We’ll be working with our engineers to see if we can capture that heat. It has great potential.”
Martin said the district ended the bidding process while looking into the heat exchange idea, but added the NISS heating system will need to be upgraded. “It uses the oldest still-running electric system in the province, dating back to the 1960s,” he said. “Somehow it escaped all the previous upgrades.”

New biz good for Cove The opening of Sea Wolf Adventures last week at Telegraph Cove marks a win-win-win scenario for both North Islanders and seasonal visitors to the region. The historic boardwalk “village” annually draws both short-stay tourists and a regular group of summer dwellers to fish, shop, dine, sightsee and generally enjoy the ambiance of the picturesque coast. But the one thing lacking at the former telegraph station, fish saltery and lumber mill has been a First Nations presence. Visitors might well have been at a coastal resort in Washington or Northern California. But Mike Willie changed all that with the opening of Sea Wolf Adventures, a cultural tour boat operation tied to the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay and the cultivated cedar “garden” of Hanson Island. Now, with just a brief, 10-minute cruise by water taxi, guests will be delivered into the heart of a culture that existed here centuries before Europeans brought their telegraph and their sawmills. To a time when Telegraph Cove was know as ’Tugwaxsu, or “Narrow Entrance” in the Kwak’wala tongue. We agree with Telegraph Cove owner Gordie Graham — this is good for business, it’s good for the tourists, and it’s good for the first peoples of our region.

Get ready for Hydro rate hikes VICTORIA – There’s a new sheriff in town for BC Hydro, and it didn’t take long for the political range war to resume. The new sheriff, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, found himself on the barricades as soon as he got the hugely complex responsibility for energy and mines. His saddlebags bulge with reports on BC Hydro’s seemingly runaway costs, along with Premier Christy Clark’s “core review” to cut $50 million a year from government operations. NDP energy critic John Horgan highlighted the latest BC Hydro troubles in his assault on the B.C. Liberal budget. First there was a $140 million cost overrun on the Northwest Transmission Line, under construction from Terrace to the tiny Tahltan village of Iskut and adjacent mine. Then BC Hydro revealed results of an audit of its earthquake preparedness. “Condition red” was the

key message. Basically, the sprawling utility has disaster plans for each of its dams or other power facilities, but no overall way to get the provincial power grid back up after a major earthquake. Horgan recited his list of BC Hydro sins after a decade of meddling by the BC Liberals: huge deferred debt, enormous liabilities, and more rate increases on the way. And now they can’t even keep us safe from the big one. Bennett fired back. About

$2 billion of that debt is for seismic upgrades for the 80-year-old Ruskin Dam in Maple Ridge, and the equally frail John Hart Dam on the Campbell River, built with wooden water pipes. Major BC Hydro works slowed down in the 1980s, and now the work is more expensive. The Northwest Transmission Line is a partnership with Imperial Metals, which wants to power its mine. Bennett said the company is not only paying for the last section to Iskut and the mine site, but pitching in for the main line as well. Ottawa paid $130 million to get remote communities off decades of dependence on diesel generators. Bennett takes over from the last sheriff, Rich Coleman, who put BC Hydro through the wringer in 2011. election, and saw the B.C. Utilities Commission jack up the rate increase to seven per cent to help slow the ballooning debt. What’s ahead for rates? The utility is looking for 32 per cent in the next three years, says energy lawyer David Austin. He calculates that only 2.5 per cent is attributable to increased private power costs. Among other things, BC Hydro needs regional emergency centres, plus expansion. Bennett came clean on another reason for rate increases – the government’s increasing dependence on taking a “dividend” as BC Hydro’s lone “shareholder.” The newly updated budget tells us this annual “dividend” is past $500 million and rising fast: $545 million this year, $611 million next year and $684 million the year after. A dog's life for Tonka Dear editor, My whole life as a dog is spent on Storey’s beach; I live and play there everyday. This is my true happiness but, sadly, this came to end for me Sunday morning. I was simply out for my morning beach walk when I stepped on some smashed beer bottles and tore my paw open. My owner rushed me to the vet, where I had to have treatment for my wound. I now have a bandaged up paw and I’m on antibiotics, but the worst part about all this is I can’t go back to
the beach for at least three weeks because my wound has to heal completely. One single act of stupidity has caused me to suffer greatly. My owners are asking the few people that think it’s OK to smash glass or litter the beach to please take a look at the consequences that follow this type of disrespectful behaviour. This truly needs to stop. This is not only about my injury; this is about the entire community. This is a public beach for families, other pets and wildlife to enjoy and feel safe. Please
Putting out the call for callers Dear editor, Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia can be a difficult experience for people with dementia and their families. A phone call from someone who cares can reminds them that there is help available and they are not alone. The local Resource Centre of the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. needs volunteers who can make outreach calls to caregivers for its First Link early intervention program. First Link connects individuals and families affected by dementia with services and support as soon as possible after diagnosis. One in 11 B.C. residents over age 65 if affected by dementia and the number of cases is projected to double over the next generation. The resulting need for assistance is soaring. And volunteers help ensure that the demand is met. Volunteers are absolutely invaluable to our team. It’s exceptionally rewarding work, to know that you are making a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Our volunteers tell us they get far more back in return
than they give. First Link volunteers follow up every three to six months to ensure families receive information about the disease, planning for the future, tips for day-today living, and services in the community. The positions have the following requirements: • Excellent verbal communication skills and supportive listening skills; • Knowledge of dementia and community resources or a willingness to learn; and • Formal or informal caregiving experience an asset. Volunteers are asked to commit to one three-hour shift per week, during the day. Excellent training is provided. For more information and to volunteer, contact toll-free at 1-800-4622833 or email jhope@ alzheimerbc.org. Residents can get more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias by visiting www.alzheimerbc.org. This has got to stop Are you kidding us? Just a couple of months ago, volunteers on the North Island were out and about, cleaning up trash in and around our communities in the annual Pitch-in B.C. cleanup. Now we stroll the logging roads on the edge of town to find your unwanted furniture, appliances and other garbage strewn among the salal. To those responsible, there is a landfill for this purpose. For those who might spot somebody else dumping illegally, the RCMP is in the phone book. Gazette staff

Full house for local artist J.R. Rardon Gazette editor COAL HARBOUR— When Port Hardy singer-songwriter Richelle Andre agreed to try crowd-sourcing as a way to raise money to record her first CD, she didn’t imaging she’d have this much of a crowd. But a house concert at the home of friends Michael Paul and Stacia Johnson June 30 drew nearly 60 people and resulted in the preorder of 70 copies of the CD she plans to record in California later this summer. It also drew nearly a dozen likeminded local musicians who got together afterward for a series of jam sessions for an appreciative crowd. “I didn’t expect this many. I was thinking, you know, if I got 10, 15 people it would have been pretty cool, Andre said after playing a short solo set of original and cover songs and another set accompanied by local guitarist/singer Mike Marquardson. “It’s phenomenal. I feel so much love, is the only way I could put it. It’s like, holy cow, what a great, supportive community.” For $15, invited guests got not only access to the house concert, but pre-purchased, autographed copies of the debut CD by Andre, who has performed locally as opening act for the North Island Concert Society and on the Filomi Days entertainment stage. She will play Filomi again July 21 and has also been booked as the opening act at this

Money raised at Sunday’s house concert has been dedicated to offset costs associated with the recording, which will take place in San Francisco from Aug. 22-Sept. 2 with producer/engineer/musician Phillip Milner of Okey Dokey Records. “Proceeds from #CoalHarbour house concert were sent to @ PhillipMilner.” Andre posted on her Facebook page a few days after the show. “He says we’ll make a cd to knock y’all out!” The concert, invitation only due to capacity of the private residence, featured a pot-luck dinner with a wide array of culinary contributions. A complete sound system was set up and run by Port Hardy musician Jamaine Campbell on the patio below the back deck, which overlooks Quatsino inlet. Guests arranged

themselves on lawn chairs or just on the grass of the back yard that slopes away from the home as Andre rolled through a mixed set of original and cover songs by some of her influences, including Neko Case, Lucinda Williams and Rickie Lee Jones. She was then joined by Marquardson for another set of original tunes. As a writer, Andre weaves a blend of personal and “story” songs typical of the folk genre. Likewise, her acoustic guitar style is a mix of lead and chord lines with bass notes and percussive scratches, all accomplished while singing lyrics. That skill has been honed through 15 year of playing and performing. She did not, however, develop expertise in negotiating the business side of recording. “I think it’s always been a dream, but there was no focus to it,”
Andre said. “I thought, sure, it’d be great, but I didn’t know how to get started, didn’t know how to go about it, didn’t know what I needed to do.” She did understand she needed to bolster her catalogue of original songs, and now has roughly 30 songs — “A lot of them won’t see the light of day,” she quickly points out. “I just kept writing and writing, until I was satisfied I had seven to nine songs that I felt comfortable with saying, ‘This is my product; please buy it.’” It was through discussions with another Vancouver Island performer, who recently recorded her second CD at Okey Dokey Records, that Andre was prompted to contact Milner and set up a session next month. For the large and varied crowd that turned out, Andre credited Paul and Johnson, who “know a lot of people, have a great place and throw great parties.” She also credited the many other musicians who grabbed instruments and jammed into the evening. “To have live music on top of (the party); I mean, live music is great,” she said. “When you live in a place like the North Island, where it’s a little bit isolated, you don’t get to partake in that. I mean, there’s a little bit, but not as much.”

Sea Wolf to offer cultural adventure J.R. Rardon Gazette editor TELEGRAPH COVE—A mix of tourists and summer residents were invited to take part in the latest attraction at this historic seaside resort Saturday. And local First Nations band members provided a sneak preview. Sea Wolf Adventures, a cultural tour and water taxi service offered beginning this month by Mike Willie, held a grand opening ceremony Saturday evening featuring drumming, singing and dancing by a multiband assemblage ranging from Alert Bay and Fort Rupert children to ‘Namgis hereditary chief William “Wa” Wasden, who led the drum circle and served as de facto master of ceremonies. “There’s a place called Yalis — Alert Bay — 10 minutes ride from here, so you do not have to go far to explore history and culture,” Willie told an audience arrayed along the end of the boardwalk near the Whale Interpretive Centre. “You don’t have to fly to Egypt or anything. There’s culture here thousands of years old and we will have a lot to offer.” Sea Wo l f Adventures, which
has an office right on the boardwalk of this popular summer destination, offers afternoon tours to both Alert Bay — featuring the U’Mista Cultural Centre — and the cultivated cedar gardens of Hanson Island. By morning, it provides water taxi service to Alert Bay to those who want to spend a half-day exploring Cormorant Island in unguided fashion. Saturday’s grand opening featured a variety of historical Kwakwaka’wakw dances and songs. Following speeches by Wasden and Willie, spectators were welcomed to take part in a social dance, and the vast majority jumped at the opportunity. “There are no rules to how you have to dance,” Wasden told the crowd. “As long as you’re enjoying yourselves.” Wasden introduced each dance by explaining the characters portrayed and the stories they represented. He also touched on the First Nations peoples’ ties to the region, sharing locations by their Kwak’wala names. Wasden also shared the darker period of Kwakwaka’wakw history, when the government outlawed the potlatch and confiscated historic masks
and other items in the 1920s, and shared how his ancestors stood strong in the face of this act, going underground and risking jail to continue their tradition until the potlatch was restored and many of the potlatch items returned to the U’mista Cultural Centre. The addition of Sea Wolf Adventures to Telegraph Cove’s attractions is the first specifically dedicated to First Nations cultural exploration and education. “This will add not only to tourism and business on North Vancouver Island, but this is going to add to the experience of visitors by exposing them to the culture of people who have lived here for thousands of years,” said Gordie Graham, owner of the resort. Willie, an educator at Gwa’sala’Nakwaxda’wx School in Port Hardy, said his ultimate goal is to raise enough money to fund a language revitalization program. “That’s the whole idea of this business,” he said. “I decided I had to think outside the box for a way to fund this kind of program.” For information on the tours or water taxi service, call 250-928WOLF or visit www. seawolfadventures.ca.

They conquered Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—Dave Macleod of Campbell River took home the men’s overall trophy and Janice Burns was the women’s champion as the Port McNeill Logger Sports Society hosted its fourth annual Lumberjack Competition at the local waterfront Saturday before approximately 200 fans. Dave Patriquin added the
Mike Murray Memorial Trophy as the overall novice winner in the logger sports competition, which drew more than two dozen entrants in men’s, women’s and novice categories. The event featured competition in classifications that included multiple hand- and powersawing divisions, axe chopping and throwing and the gruelling choker race. Competitors cov-
ered the spectrum of entrants, from Can-Log tour professionals and women to local novice loggers, including a pair of Port McNeill teens — sisters Ali and Dawn Briscoe — competing for the first time. Drivers push to breaking point Gazette staff A half dozen cars started the stock races at the Tri-port Speedway last Saturday, but none of the six finished the night unscathed as the drivers pushed their cars to the limit. The lineup included four regular drivers at the track; Daniel Hovey, Glen Day, Brock Shore and Paul Weeks. The veterans were joined by newcomer Jared Breitkreitz in his second full outing and a rookie car which changed drivers throughout the night to let a few potential drivers get a little time in the seat. Hovey set the pace at the time-ins, clocking the fast time for the night as the drivers set the order for the first race. The first yellow flag of the night dropped one lap into the Trophy Dash as Day went
off into the tires on turn one. After a little help from Shore, Day limped out to the pits and was replaced by Breitkreitz. Breitkreitz fared little better, pulling out on his second lap with a broken ball joint on his front right wheel, the damage keeping the driver busy on mechanic duty until the main event. On the track, Shore held off the remaining drivers to take the win in the Trophy Dash. Day rejoined the lineup for the heat races, and the field was joined by the rookie car which started from the back of the pack to take some pressure off the novice driver. Shore took the first heat, beating out Day by less than a car length with Hovey taking third. Hovey’s car had noticeable damage to the front inside
wheel by the end of the heat. News filtering up from the pits suggested that his car had suffered a similar fate to Breitkreitz’s but was still handling “not too bad,” according to the driver. The second heat saw Shore take his turn in the pits after slamming into the fence out of turn four while Weeks, who started at the front, took first place in the heat, with Day taking second and Hovey third. The race organizers allowed some extra pit time before the main event in an effort to get all the cars on the track. Down in the pits, the drivers showed their camaraderie as the more mechanically experienced drivers took over work on Breitkreitz’s car to get the newcomer back up and running. As all six cars lined
up for the 25-lap main event they were joined in the pits by Laurie O’Connor with his modified car in tow. While O’Connor got suited up the green flag dropped to start the finale at the Speedway. The four regulars jumped to the front early on and held their order until Shore pulled in to the pits to deal with a flat before rejoining and scrambling to make up for lost laps. Early front-runner Weeks’ night came to an premature end as he was forced to retire with Hovey and Day leaping past the stricken car to battle for the lead. Hovey’s damaged front quarter continued to worsen, the frame bending out after a collision, but the driver was able to hold his line and his lead. O’Connor joined the
rest of the field for the remaining laps, putting on a display for the fans in his souped-up racer while going wide of the competitors. After Shore lost his hood and continued with his improvedairflow version, Day threw a tire and had to pull off for a quick replacement. The repair left Hovey in the clear to take the top spot for the night, while Shore battled back for second. N e w c o m e r Breitkreitz’s troublefree finale earned him the third place for the race. Hovey remarked after the race that the car had been handling fine despite the damage to the inside wheel. As for the damage to the bodywork, “I guess I stuck my nose in where in didn’t belong,” he joked. As for O’Connor,
he quipped that his impromptu appearance came after the driver was “heading home from Port Alice and just needed a shot of adrenaline.” Another consideration was putting the car through its paces after having some work done under the hood. The driver, who regularly travels to the U.S. to compete, took advantage of the opportunity to open the engine up and check its performance ahead of an upcoming event and to give a little extra display for the fans who came out to the races. The drivers will reconvene in two weeks at the Speedway with organizers hoping for an expanded field next time around after several no-shows at this meet. For full results see Scoreboard, page 17.

Cops for Cancer fundraiser tees off Gazette staff The local community gave big last week as Seven Hills Golf and Country Club played host to the annual Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer golf tournament. This year competition on the fairway hot, with 72 golfers taking to the course for the eighteen-hole, fourperson best ball format tourney. This represents a jump from last year's 48 golfers, with registration closing early due to the full roster. The golf tourney tees off the Cops for Cancer fundraising efforts on the North Island which culminates each year with the Tour de Rock bike ride. The final total was still Island from Port Hardy to $9,000 for the society, with
being totted up at the time the Gazette went to press, but early indications were that the event had exceeded the previous year's total. At Seven Hills, the top spot went to team Amos, who earned first pick from the prize table for their low score. Port Alice RCMP officer and event organizer Darren Regush praised the generosity of local businesses who donated to the event. "It's been amazing," he said. "Every year they keep giving us this great stuff. A lot of them have just given to the Logger's Golf a couple of weeks ago and they still went 'Here you go.'" Even the items for the apres-fairway dinner was supplied by local businesses. "I haven't had to spend money on anything except the stuff for the prize
table," said Regush. Each golfer got their pick from the prize table for entering the tourney, while a separate table was laid out with donated items up for silent auction. This year the items up for bid included return flights to Vancouver, hotel stays, spa vouchers, artwork and many other items, all contributed to the event by local businesses. This 2013 Tour de Rock arrives in Port Alice on September 22 with the team of 22 riders, including 17 police officers, heading out for Port Hardy and Port McNeill the next day to kick off the tour. Between now and the ride events are scheduled all over the Island to help raise money for the cause. To get involved or for more information go to www.tourderock.ca.
Paddlers' on form for local regatta Gazette staff Tri-Port Dragon Boat Society teams continued a strong month of competition in last weekend’s Nanimo Dragon Boat Festival. Now they’ll set their sights on their own regatta, the fourth annual Tri-Port Dragon Boat Regatta in Hardy Bay July 20. In qualifying Saturday that was cut short due to high wind and waves, the Pussycats earned a spot in the Platinum A final
and went on to place fourth overall in the event. Two more Tri-Port teams, the Warriors and the Dragon Slayers, each qualified into the Jade division and came home with top-2 finishes in their class. The Dragon Slayers took silver in the Jade A final, while the Warriors were first in the Jade B final. One week earlier, three North Island entries ran the table at the Race the River
Regatta in Campbell River, finishing 1-2 in the women’s finals and also claiming the mixed team victory. Port Hardy-based Na’max’sala won the mixed category finals. The Dragon Slayers were the women’s champs and were closely followed by the Warriors in second place. Campbell River’s River Spirit claimed bronze. In late June, the Pussycats traveled to
Vancouver to compete in the Rio Tinto Alcan Regatta, the secondlargest Dragon Boat festival in the world with nearly 170 teams. Placed in the Ladies Rec B/C/D division following preliminary heats, the Pussycats claimed bronze medals for the division in the finals. They also qualified in the top 10 of 42 ladies teams overall to compete in the “Guts and Glory”, a 2,000-metre, 10-boat showdown.
The Tri-Port Regatta will take place during the height of Filomi Days activities in Port Hardy, in full view of revellers at Carrot Park on the waterfront. Heat racing begins in the morning and continues into the afternoon for finals. Also featured is a fund-raising auction of paddled which have been decorated by area artists and donated to the society. The paddles will be auctioned individually throughout the day.

Doubleheader to decide season standings Gazette staff HYDE CREEK—The Port Hardy Cubs blasted Port McNeill 21-2 in North Vancouver Island Baseball League play Monday, setting up a doubleheader showdown this weekend with the league title on the line. The league-leading Cubs (8-2) square off with the Hyde Creek Hillbillys (7-3) in games Saturday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday on the final day of the regular season. The Hillbillys, the three-time defending league champs, need a sweep to claim the top seed into the July 20-21 league playoff tournament, while the Cubs can clinch the top spot with a split of the doubleheader. Monday’s game was a makeup of a game originally scheduled for Saturday at the local ballpark. Earlier, Port Hardy downed Hyde Creek
17-6 Thursday to vault into the league’s top spot, and Hyde Creek bounced back with a 10-1 win over Port McNeill to remain one game behind. Cubs 21, Rangers 3 Jordan Campbell and Russ Taylor combined for nine hits and nine runs scored as the Cubs overwhelmed Port McNeill Monday in the final regular-season meeting between the teams. Five-run outbursts in the second and fourth innings staked the Cubs to a 13-1 lead and the Rangers (1-11) never threatened. Ryan Rushton went 3-for5 with four runs scored and Curtis Martyn and Warren Henderson chipped in two hits each for the winners. Chris Lamothe picked up the win on the mound and Taylor came on for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to
of RBI singles and Ray Bono doubled home a run. The Hillbillys also got RBIs from Bono on a bases-loaded walk, by Warren Henderson when he was hit by a pitch with the bases load, and by Chad Bell, who reached on an error in Hyde Creek’s five-run first inning. The Rangers’ scored an unearned run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Jordan Altmiks reached on an error, moved to second on a walk, and stole third base. He raced home when the throw from catcher Ryan Rushton on the steal attempt skipped past third baseman Rob Cessford into left field for another error. On inning later, Altmiks broke up Hall’s no-hit bid with a clean bloop hit to shallow centre field. Hall finished with 13 strikeouts and walked one in the win.

nail down his first save. Rob Kenny went 2-for-3, Brandon Proc hit a two-run single, and Greg Johnson was 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Rangers. Kenny took the loss for Port McNeill, which wrapped up its regular season and will face the No. 2 seed in the first game of the league playoffs July 20.
Hillbillys 10, Rangers 1 Ivan Hall homered and spun a one-hit complete game in his first appearance on the mound this season Sunday as Hyde Creek completed a season sweep of Port McNeill. Hall finished 3-for-4 with four RBI for the Hillbillys (7-3). Jason West added a pair
Cubs 17, Hillbillys 6 Curtis Martyn and Chris Lamothe each launched home runs to pace a 16-hit attack as the Cubs moved into the league lead last Thursday. Martyn, who also improved to 4-1 with the pitching victory, hit a bases-loaded home run in the top of the third inning — though it only counted for two runs due to the league’s five-run inning limit. Lamothe’s two-run blast capped another fiverun outburst in the fifth. The Cubs clinched the win with another five-spot in the top of the seventh, with Jordan Campbell and Martyn each lacing RBI doubles. On the mound, Martyn struck out 11 batters while allowing four hits and five walks through six innings.

The North Island Gazette would like to thank Lennox Brown and his family for their dedicated service for the past 11 years. The Brown family has passed the paper route down to all the children in their family for oveer a decade, delivering a dry readable paper to many of the Hyde Creek area subscribers. Without the Brown’s family dedication, many people would not have had the convenience of having the Gazette delivered at their door. Your pleasant, personal delivery will be greatly missed. —The Gazette Staff

Closing doors is not an easy task. Conversely other doors need addressing. Therefore I must express my gratitude for all the support and generosity that has enabled Hardy Lock & Key to provide security and emergency openings to residences, commercial entities and industry from Holberg to Woss and all other localities in between.
•
The list goes on and on, Regional District, 3 municipalities, School District 85 and many other government and private agencies. I trust that all goes well with so many with whom I’ve had this opportunity to resolve so many issues. Would I had this opportunity to do it all over again, I would say yes but for now my mind says “Thank you”. Hardy Lock & Key will be closed as of July 31, 2013. — Ron McLennan

Invasive giant a dangerous nuisance Attempting to capture the interest of the public and government when it concerns invasive plants is like attending a molasses race in the arctic, and sometimes it even turns into a Clayoquot event with invasive planthuggers. To most folks there is no impact to their lives from invasive plants. Therefore, it follows that there is no apparent issue, and thus the plants can make massive inroads, devastating native plant and wildlife populations before there is intervention. Scotch Broom is one plant I wrote about in the early nineties — it was first noted on the grounds of the loran tower off the Rupert 400, seeds most likely transferred by vehicles from down-Island. Today we can see virtual forests of broom dominating the landscape and in time, as with down-Island scenarios, there will be an impact to forestry as broom will compete with newly planted conifer forests, creating a negative economic impact to our region. Ironically, it wasn’t that long ago that government highway departments planted broom as a bank stabilizer because its deep roots promoted the distribution of this invasive species. Today broom still is not regulated by the B.C. Weed Control Act and won’t be until there is a serious negative economic impact. Thankfully there are stewardship groups working to eradicate local populations. As seeds lie dormant for years, it will take years to deplete the seed stock to destroy local populations. Besides Scotch Broom and other invasive plants on the north Island there is a new kid on the block known as giant hogweed, which also crowds out native plant species and has a nasty disposition towards human health. Giant hogweed is a huge, toxic plant that can grow to a height
Above: The leaves of the giant hogweed can grow to over a metre wide. Right: The plant itself contains a poisonous sap that can cause burns and irritation on Lawrence Woodall contact with skin and blindness if it gets into the eye.
Our Backyard with Lawrence Woodall of six meters or more and can burn skin and cause permanent blindness. This year I’ve run into two of the plants, one just south of the Seven Mile Landfill entrance and the other on a deactivated road near Marble River. Contact with the weed’s clear sap can cause ugly burns that create large blisters leave black and purple scarring for life, resembling scars from a fire or chemical burn. And if even a tiny trace of sap comes into contact with your eye, it can
cause temporary or permanent blindness. It’s not just exterior damage — chemicals in the sap known as furocoumarins are both teratogenic and carcinogenic, meaning that they can cause birth defects and cancer, a lethal mix. Giant hogweed closely resembles our native cow parsnip. Besides its huge size, their stems are five- to 10-cm in diameter and are marked with dark, purplish-red blotches and raised nodules, and covered in coarse hair. They have deeply
grooved compound leaves that can grow to 1.5 metres wide. In both cases that I ran into so far this summer, they were along roadsides, and can be found adjacent to vacant lots, right of ways, and in areas considered moist to wet, near creeks and streams. Like many invasive species, once they take hold in a region they are difficult to eradicate, as a seed can lie dormant for seven years or more. If you’re going to tackle a plant (when I returned to the Seven Mile location someone

to prevent reproduction. Removal of your safety gear will be just as important, as it will more than likely be covered in sap. To date, there is no provincial strategy in place to stop its spread, and if it’s allowed to
