It may be a simple (but tiring) mission to walk 1,100 kilometres from Hope, B.C. to Calgary, Alta., to raise $50,000 for the Children’s Aid Foundation, when a person has an able body. It may not be so simple to consider Bart Zych is walking after having both knees surgically reconstructed. Zych’s goal is twofold: one is to help neglected and underprivileged kids with a fundraising project for prevention, education and enrichment programs and the second is to celebrate overcoming the physical limitations he had before having knee surgery. Zych remembers waking up after surgery on Dec. 18, when he was so glad he could walk he decided he had to do some community activism. He felt he was given a second chance and decided that fundraising would give a second chance to youth who will have a lifetime to value it

and pass it on. Zych’s self-interest in the walk is his adventurous side – he has always been a hiker. Until Dec. 18, Zych had been restricted from any type of physical activities. After successful surgery, Zych wanted to combine his new-earned freedom with hope for disadvantaged children. His “I for Community Project” was born and it aims to provide a framework

for the individuals, the “I’s”, who can work for the benefit of everyone – the community. Secure donations to the Children’s Aid Foundation are made by clicking the donate tab on the webpage http://iforcommunity.org/ Zych’s route is on Highway 3 so he can personally visit many of the small rural communities. He hopes the face-toface connections he is able to make will
encourage people in the communities to take the next steps. “It has been a fantastic journey so far from Hope to Grand Forks,” Zych said. “People will pull over on the road and offer me drinks, fruits and vegetables and talk to me about how they work in their communities with youth.” Zych planned for 37 walking days with a maximum of 50 days. This flexibility is to include attendance at commu-
nity events, like the Canada Day parade and meeting with Mayor Brian Taylor in Grand Forks. Zych finished by saying what many people in Grand Forks can appreciate: “When I entered Grand Forks it was the first day in the entire walk from Hope where I could walk in a T-shirt and shorts. It seems as if the sunshine tap got turned on and the rain tap got turned off. The valley is just so beau-

Coroner’s service as Brian Hall, failed to show up at a friend’s house the previous evening after a day of dirt biking alone. Two friends then commenced a search on Wednesday morning and located Mr. Hall in a heavily treed area several kilometers from Casino, south of Trail. Scene examination revealed that the man had veered into a tree while riding his dirt bike and had sustained an instantly fatal injury as result. Due to the remote location and difficulty in accessing it, Rossland Search and Rescue was activated and attended the scene with a crew. The recovery of Mr. Hall from the accident site was completed via a helicopter long-line, brought in from Revelstoke. With the assistance of the Trail & Greater District RCMP, the Provincial Coroner’s office is conducting the investigation.

Health Listen to what your body tells you SUBMITTED
As a community dietitian, I am often asked about the latest trends and diets. I think to get to the heart of the subject, lets put the Google search away, get back to the basics and listen to our bodies. If you could ask your body what it needs to feel good and enjoy life — I think this is what it would tell you. Eat regularly. Whether you are working, hiking or travelling, your body needs fuel every three to four hours. Without regular fuel the body’s metabolism slows down and this can result in weight gain. Spreading your food intake throughout the day and eating balanced meals of three to four of the food groups will let your body perform it’s best.
Make Your Home Safe for Independent Living Are you a low-income senior or a person with a disability who wants to live safely and independently in the comfort of your home? Do you have difficulty performing day-to-day activities? Does your home need to be adapted to meet your changing needs? If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance under the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program. Find out today if you are eligible and if you meet all of the requirements as a low-income homeowner or as a landlord applying on behalf of an eligible tenant.
To apply or learn more, visit www.bchousing.org/HAFI You can also contact BC Housing: Phone: 604-646-7055 Toll-free: 1-800-407-7757 (ext. 7055)
Don’t cut out the good carbohydrates. Do you ever feel your energy levels dropping in the afternoon or during an activity? It might be due to a lack of carbohydrates (often called carbs) to balance your meal. Carbohydrates come from the bread and cereals food group. Many diets limit this group which is an important team player that supplies the body with fuel and vitamins. Check out Canada’s Food Guide to learn more about developing a balanced plan for you. Keep sugary drinks and treats in check. These choices have the sole purpose of pure pleasure but too much fun, too often can add up faster than you think. A small French
vanilla cappuccino can pack 10 teaspoons of sugar and two teaspoons of fat; a 591 ml bottle of pop has 17 teaspoons of sugar. It’s okay to enjoy the odd sweet treat but be sure to check in with yourself and ask how often and what else do I enjoy that might be better for me. Cool smoothies with fresh berries, fruit, and yogurt with 100 per cent juice are a delicious and healthier choice. Get a move on. Your body loves to move whenever it gets a chance. Base activities on seasons to provide a variety of fun activities that can keep you moving throughout the year. Activity has added benefits that we may not often think about like taking the time to clear
HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities
Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

our minds, notice our surroundings, connect with friends and family and challenging ourselves by trying something new. Enjoy real fresh food. Nothing beats home cooked, real, locally grown food. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy fresh picked colourful produce and herbs from your garden or local food markets. If your body could talk to you right now I think it would say “don’t worry so much about the trends and the fads - feed me regularly with good, fresh, tasty food and be sure to keep me moving … and by the way thanks for listening.” Author: Tatjana Bates is a community nutritionist with Inte-
easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help. Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

A Castlegar author’s recent biography of a distinguished relative has been named the top family history book of 2012 by the BC Genealogical Society. Sam McBride was on hand last month to receive the honour during the society’s annual book awards night in Burnaby for The Bravest Canadian, which examines the life of his muchdecorated ancestor, Capt. Fritz Peters. “It was quite a thrill to hear that I won first place,” McBride said. “Before the awards were announced I was among nine authors who made presentations on their books. Three other entries
were based on family letters, so it seems to be a popular approach these days.” A few years ago, McBride found a cache of letters from and about Peters that shed new light on his relative, who received multiple medals for bravery in two world wars. A local mountain was also named after him. Peters also worked with British secret intelligence in Africa, developed miniature submarine technology, and pioneered the use of plastic explosives and timedelay fuses. His files, however, were either destroyed or declared secret. McBride’s book finally sheds light on his mysterious relative.

“Brilliant...” Continued from P. 11
... by choosing the name Brilliant, the pacifist group wanted to erase Waterloo’s military associations. Brilliant was previously known by two other names: kp’itl’els was the Sinixt village located there. Its translation is unknown, but Randy Bouchard and Dorothy Kennedy write in Lakes Indian Ethnography (1985) that their contemporary informants believed it was related to “end of a mountain range” or “come to an end.” Kp’itl’els was soon displaced by the Doukhobor settlement, although in 2009 a stone monument was dedicated on the flats to the last Sinixt family to live
there. In 1883, Osoyoos judge and land and cattle baron John Carmichael Haynes (1831-88) applied to buy the land at what’s now Brilliant and had a townsite surveyed called Haynesville, but nothing came of it. The plan was cancelled in 1913. The Brilliant post office closed on September 8, 1970. Once the capital of Doukhobor industry, home to the Kootenay Columbia Preserving Works, Brilliant is today primarily a residential community, but also boasts the Brilliant dam, Brilliant Cultural Centre, Verigin Memorial Park, and Brilliant suspension bridge.

Nineteenth in an approximately alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Brilliant, at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers, was named in 1908 after Doukhobor leader Peter (Lordly) Verigin bought 2,700 acres of land there. According to A.M. Evalenko in his 1913 Message of the Doukhobors, “The first [tract of land] we give the name of the Valley of Consolation, village of Brilliant, from a brilliant diamond of first water, on account of the great river Columbia flowing through the land ...” Although near the Columbia, Brilliant is actually on the Kootenay, and Cominco Magazine in April 1963 suggested it was the “bright racing waters” of the latter river that suggested the name to local land owner Hiram B. Landis. Harold Webber in People and Places (1973) said Doukhobor leader Peter (Lordly) Verigin thought of naming the area Kavkaz, after the place in Transcaucasia where most Doukhobors had lived. Landis, however, “felt this would be wrong and advised against it.

Verigin agreed and suggested Brilliant, from the brilliant, sparkling waters of the Kootenay River.” A history of the Castlegar school district added: “Landis felt the foreign sounding name would always be mispronounced and would most likely carry a stigma to it.” Jon Kalmakoff ’s online Doukhobor Gazetteer [www. doukhobor.org/pndetails.html] says Verigin initially named the settlement Brilliant Chistoy Vody, before it was shortened to
Brilliant. Retired UBC librarian Jack McIntosh says a literal, grammatically correct translation would be “Diamond of Clear Water.” “ Historically, the phrase has been commonly used as a description of diamond quality, equivalent to Diamond of the First Water in English,” he says. The Brilliant post office opened on November 1, 1908. The earliest newspaper reference came in the Trail News 20 days later: “The Doukhobor Soci-
ety at Waterloo have their sawmill now in operation and houses are being erected. There is a post office there, the name being Brilliant.” The paper consistently referred to the area as Waterloo, despite the fact the mining ghost town was actually several kilometers downstream. Today it’s considered part of lower Ootischenia. George Woodcock and Ivan Avakumovic, in their book ...The Doukhobors, suggest that ...

Warfield pool still subject to weather Trail staff West Kootenay Advertiser
First it was too cold and wet, then it was too hot, now Village of Warfield staff is hoping it’s just right to complete the much delayed renovations of the Centennial Pool. Work has been progressing slowly on the pool since late April when village
works crews began stripping off the old tiles in anticipation of a full resurfacing of the 46-year-old pool. Warfield’s chief administrative officer Vince Morelli said the public had been patiently waiting for the work to be completed and the pool to open but with recent temperatures, patience might be wearing thin.
“People weren’t too concerned when it was raining constantly,” he said. “Now that it’s been 110 degrees (43 degrees Celsius) a lot of people are calling to find out when it’ll be open.” The village is hoping the public can be patient for at least a little while longer as the work is anticipated to take another two weeks to complete.

Bluegrass music is well known and appreciated for its wholesome nature and the sort of well-behaved crowd it attracts.
If you happen to be a picker, you likely know the drill like the back of your hand already. You’re familiar with the routine of impromptu jams running well into the night after the scheduled performances
have gotten everyone inspired. Bluegrass music is well known and appreciated for its wholesome nature and the sort of well-behaved crowd it attracts. This is true across the continent, from its birthplace in the American southeast to here in B.C. and up to Alaska. From hotbeds of enthusiasm in the Orient, to Europe… everywhere people enjoy hearing and playing this timeless acoustic music, they get together like an extended family. The members of the “Blueberry Pickers” are running the event. That’s this Friday through Sunday – a couple with a camper can stake a claim on a plot of bluegrass real estate for just $30 for the weekend. For all others, admission is by donation. The fun starts Friday at 2 p.m. It’s just outside Castlegar at the accommodating Pass Creek fairgrounds – an ideal location. See you there! And don’t forget your thumb-picks!

Sculpture Talk
2012
Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. cocted outlandish theories as to their origins – and continues to be now. Ehis’ two graceful works here are a testament to his ancestral lineage and the traditions and skills passed on from generation to generation.
Now residing in North York, Ontario, Ehis combines the artistic traditions he learned growing up in Nigeria with studies in industrial physics to better learn the properties and processes of bronze casting. The result: superb bronzes that pay homage to his roots but are contemporary and modern.
Felix Ehis
‘African Beauty’ (bronze) & ‘King Bird’ (bronze) Descended from Benin royalty, Felix Ehis continues the long line of bronze artisans that dates back hundreds of years in the area of the Niger Delta – now part of Nigeria. By the middle of the sixteenth century, the Benin empire covered much of the Guinea Coast in central west Africa. Artists, encouraged by the Oba (King), produced dazzling, exquisite bronze and brass works: heads, figurines, plaques and large pictorials, mostly for the monarchy. The sophistication of the work was outstanding – the colonizing British in the 19th century could not believe the sculptures were local and con-
‘King Bird’ is stately in its abstraction. Hollows at the head and tail provide balance and symmetry, while the elongated neck and short, sharp, inward beak leave a pleasant opening that compliments the work. Today’s North and South American kingbirds were originally native to Africa. In his stylised version, Ehis portrays a regal, mystical version that is part of African beliefs, as he indicates on the nameplate. His second work displayed here is stylistically similar but human in form. ‘African Beauty’ captures the simple, unadorned elegance of the African female. The long neck is countered by the open shoulders below and the deep-set rounded face above. The face features full, prominent eyes, shapely ears and parted, braided hair at the back. The sculpture is serene and meditative, full of reflection and contemplation. As in his piece Oracle, Ehis has conveyed the wisdom of the Benin parable, ‘ life is in the head’, in a bust celebrating the lovely counte-

an appropriate study for the Victoriabased sculptor to display here.
Ehis displayed both Oracle and African Beauty in the 2011 edition of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota Sculpturewalk, and he is excited about having two pieces in his inaugural appearance here. “It is a real honour. I hope that those looking at my sculptures are pleased with them,” he says. “Bronze is the natural medium for me to work in. I hope the artistic traditions behind these sculptures are apparent, in addition to reflecting my own personal interpretation and style. “From a young age I’ve been immersed in the Benin art tradition. My school teacher supported my talents early, and the time I spent with the late Ben Osawe (one of Nigeria’s most famous contemporary artists) was invaluable.” He smiles and concludes, “Now, all these factors plus my own foundry makes everything possible.” SPONSORED by

Dobbs’ cougar sits on its powerful haunches staring straight ahead, motionless and intently focused. Its long tail curls around the right flank and rests behind its front paws, sitting up on the left one slightly. ‘Ghost Cat’ captures the necessary stillness and coiled energy of the animal, ready to launch itself on its unsuspecting prey.
Fred Dobbs ‘Ghost Cat’ (bronze) With over 25 years of sculpting prowess in a wide range of mediums – bronze, sand, ice, concrete, even edibles like pumpkins and chocolate! – Fred Dobbs has numerous awards and honours under his belt. He sculpts primarily figurative and architectural pieces that dazzle, regardless of the material he is working with, and his life size rendition of a cougar does exactly that. Entitled ‘Ghost Cat’, the almost four foot high sculpture captures the elusive nature of the cougar in name and in reality. One of three wild cats native to Canada, the cougar is a rarely seen, highly efficient stalker and hunter. Healthy populations on Vancouver Island and in the Kootenays make it
“Like most people, I’ve never seen a cougar in the wild, Dobbs says. “So this sculpture is done primarily from museum and anatomical studies along with descriptions from people who have seen one outside of a preserve or zoo. I’ve tried to capture the cat’s ability to remain absolutely frozen, still, relaxed, but ready to strike in a single bound if the opportunity presents itself.” He originally envisioned the work as identical sculptures flanking a staircase, set on wall caps as guardians cast in concrete. When invited to display at this year’s event, Dobbs opted to cast it in bronze and mount it on a simple metal base. Either way, ‘Ghost Cat’ is impressively menacing and wonderfully detailed.
be more flamboyant and imaginative, even whimsical,” he says. “I like that these fantastical creations will provide happiness and pleasure in the here and now, then be gone. In other mediums there is a permanence that lends itself to getting the detail, scale and scope just so. I’m a perfectionist in everything I sculpt, but my imagination really takes off working with temporary materials.” ‘Ghost Cat’ displays that need for exactness and fine detail; it’s a gorgeous study of a magnificent, often maligned animal that depends on its skill as a hunter to survive in an everincreasing urbanized landscape.

Finding his inspiration in the cycles of nature, mythology and legend, and even in a storybook he read and reread to his son Shay, Dobbs combines painstaking research with artistic innovation to create his spectacular sculptures. “When I’m working in temporary mediums like sand and ice, I tend to

If your body could talk to you right now I think it would say “don’t worry so much about the trends and the fads - feed me regularly with good, fresh, tasty food and be sure to keep me moving … and by the way thanks for listening.” Author: Tatjana Bates is a community nutritionist with Interior Health.
easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
July 5, 2013
Tip of the Week:There is something very exciting and rare in the planetary alignments now. I am referring to a Grand Trine: 3 planets each exactly 120 degrees apart creating a great triangle in the sky. Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune are the planets involved. Because these are 3 of the 5 far planets, this configuration is rare and powerful. A ‘Trine” aspect in Astrology is linked to the element of fire and is generally considered the most creative and fortunate aspect of all. At worst, when too many Trines are present in one’s natal chart, it can produce laziness and excessive self-indulgence. In this case, each planet is pivotal. Neptune in Pisces (2011 – 2026) is in honour in its own sign and represents a process of mass spiritual awakening for all of humanity. Saturn in Scorpio (2012 – 2015) indicates where the cut is the deepest in terms of powerful change and transformation. Jupiter in Cancer as of June 25 is in one of its most auspicious sign placements. This cycle lasts for 1 year. For this reason, its influence is extra important right now. It will synchronize with mass emotional expression and sentiment. The recent uprising with mass emotional expression and appeal for democracy in Egypt is a good example. Jupiter will also play another key role by virtue of the fact that it will activate the ongoing Square aspect (90 degrees) between Uranus and Pluto (2011 – 2016). In that configuration, it will contribute to a T-Square, which is a very powerful and charged energy pattern that produces change. The apex planet is where the energy is released and in this case it is Uranus in Aries. The impact of that aspect will become evident starting this month and especially in August and remain potent until April 2014. More on that next week, stay tuned!
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Some big activations close to home will be evident now. It is yet another chapter in a series which will continue for many months and altogether indicative of a veritable metamorphosis. This change will likely impact the way you look as well as your overall outlook. Focusing to participate to direct this flow positively is ideal and important.
The time has come to lay a firmer foundation for the future. You want to extend your scope to encompass a larger vision and span of time. A consequent shift in your overall mode of perception is underway. It is influencing your thoughts and feelings regarding relationships. To succeed, certain modes of thought and behaviour must change.
A Desire to create a deeper and more reliable sense of security is on your mind. There are several areas of consideration gaining your attention. A change in your overall lifestyle is implied. Since good health is a cornerstone of security, it is a top priority. It may also be time to learn new skills for future income. Stretch your mind and your comfort zone.
Your confidence levels are rising and your focus is getting sharper. You have entered a time period when you will feel inspired to advance to the next level. Doing so will require extra effort. Fortunately, the impulse and energy to do so will be available to you. Still, you must cooperate consciously. The sooner you can get started the better.
Change is the law and sometimes it moves at an accelerated pace, like now. It is likely that many fears are stirring within. The key to overcome them is to not only acknowledge and accept the current flow of change, but to embrace it with faith and determination. It is as though you are in a grand process of graduation. Prepare, move and act to qualify for the next stage.
An expansion of your overall outreach, network and/or circle of associations is underway. The biggest issue to overcome now is a tendency to dream but not act and follow through. You are meant to be in an important learning cycle, yet unless you are proactively engaged you could suffer from lack of direction. Work the angles to blaze a trail.

Some fresh and fertile seeds have been planted in the garden of your public and professional life. While making good of past achievements will help, be careful not to lean on them too much. Acknowledge your will and determination to go forward with confidence that you have a lot to offer. As well, weave in a willingness to invest as necessary for future opportunities.
A potent creative cycle has begun for you. It requires that you look to the future and be willing to take new leads. Training of some kind is implied. Spiritually, your main challenge now is to be true to your core sense of individuality. A clear reflection of doing so will manifest as fresh starts in your attitude, philosophy habitual rhythms.
You have entered a deep cycle. It already began almost a year ago and will continue for a couple more yet. It implies a deep purge and purification process. What used to be important and of value to you is steadily melting away. At best, all things spent, used and false will fall away and be replaced with new perspectives and orientations. These have likely already begun.
The returns of past efforts and investments continue to roll in. These will reflect back to you the quality of your choices. Due to current influences, increased stimulation of your most important relationships is underway. The overall tone is likely to be charged, dynamic and dramatic, perhaps even aggressive. Work within to produce outer harmony.
A big activation of change in your daily rhythm, routine and overall lifestyle continues. You feel confident that there is more that you can have and achieve. Taking key calculated risks to prove your theory is on your mind. To succeed, you may have to let go of certain things, positions, situations and perhaps people. The time has come to make your move.
The time has come to expand your scope and vision to see a bigger picture. Yet, in order not to get overwhelmed by it, acknowledge yourself, your determination and resourcefulness. While you should be experiencing a steady rise in confidence, the danger is that you will scatter your focus. Aim to express yourself on a variety of fronts, yet not too many.

Bronze for Kootenay U/15 soccer boys staff writer West Kootenay Advertiser

Standing: (Coach) Neil Moon, Kevin Nutini, Quentin Lavorato, Blake Sidoni, Akira Engelbrecht, Nicholas Fantin, Sean Hogarth, Mathew Liszt, Mike Moon, Rowen Stevens, Devon Dunkley, (Asst. The Kootenay South Youth Soccer Association U/15 Boys captured the bronze medal this past weekend at the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial (B) Cup held in Prince George. The Kooteany South Big Horns had three wins against just one loss in the tournament, adding to their tally of a win and two other second place finishes at other tournaments this season. The boys lost their opening game to the Royal City Westminster United 4 - 1 with Mason Todevic scoring the only goal on a penalty kick. Their second game,
against the Quesnel Strikers, was a blowout as they marched their way to a 6 - 1 victory. On Saturday, Eli Voykin scored both goals in a shutout against the Gorge FC. Sunday was an identical scenario with Matt Liszt taking the lead on the two Big Horns goals. “We picked two Nelson players this year as the Nelson District did not have enough 15-year-old boys to field a team,” said team manager Dominic Isernia, in an email. “Tristan Jinjoe broke his collar bone in Kalispell furing a tournament and we recruited our alternate player Akira Engelbrecht for the remaining part of the season.”
The team is a true representation of the Kootenays with players hailing from all across the region and have competed in Canada and in the United States this year. Here’s the breakdown: From Trail: Mike Isernia, Mike Moon, Blake Sidoni and Dennis Grinblats. Beaver Valley: Bryden Tache and Jordan Kniert. Rossland: Nick Fantin and Rowen Stevens. Castlegar: Mathew Liszt, Devon Dunkley, Eli Voykin, Malcom Macleod and Sawyer Murdoch. Nelson: Akira Engelbrecht and Mason Todevic. Genelle: Quentien Lavorato

Lifestyles
Seven years in Erickson It seems hard to believe that Bob Johnson and Petra Flaa embarked on a dream to establish their Erickson winery only in 2006. A visit today reveals a lush, well-established vineyard and a large building containing a lovely tasting room, winery, barrel room and winemaker’s quarters. Toward the rear of the long, narrow property is a residence constructed two years ago, now home to the expat Calgarians. I arrived for a chat with Johnson on a pleasant weekday afternoon and he suggested we enjoy a glass of Gewürztraminer on the pergola-covered patio that affords a perfect 360-degree view of the surrounding area.
“We could speed it up by moving it into the (warmer) winery, but we’re not really about speeding things up.” Bob Johnson The Gewürz, spicy, crisp, aromatic and very, very clean tasting, was the perfect match to our wide-ranging conversation, one that was interrupted several times by return visitors to Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery who wanted to say hi to the congenial owner. In Johnson’s professional career he was a reservoir engineer for an oil company and he’s been winding down that part of his life for a few years now. He has returned to Calgary for several months each winter, leaving Petra and hired help to do all the pruning and gear up for spring. Despite pleas to stay on, he said he is

now officially out of the oil biz, free to focus year-round on the winery and, even more importantly, the marketing of B-G wines. Baillie-Grohman produced only 3,200 cases of wine in 2012, in a relatively light harvest, but Johnson expects that to jump to about 4,000 this year, still about 20 per cent short of his ultimate goal of 5,000 cases. In addition to grapes from the Baillie-Grohman vineyard, the winery contracts to buy grapes from a friend and neighbor across the road and has contracted Merlot and Cab Franc grapes from a Golden Mile grower this fall. I asked Johnson to give me his impressions of the wines currently available on site and in private and VQA stores around the province (and in some Alberta locations). 2012 Gewürz: Has a little Kerner and Schoenberger included to create additional weight. “This is our best Gewürztraminer to date and I’m really happy with it.” 2012 Pinot Gris:
“Another great Gris, this was 50 per cent barrel fermented.” Different yeasts were used in each of the three barrels, and the results in one “were amazing”, so that yeast will be used exclusively in the 2013 version. Johnson said the Gris will sell out this summer. 2011 Chardonnay: Spent a year in French oak. “In six months it will be phenomenal—it’s really coming on now.” Fewer than 200 cases were produced, a number that will increase by about 50 per cent this year. 2011 Pinot Noir: About to replace the nearly sold out 2010, this one “has a bit of a bite and in 2-3 months will be amazing.” 2012 Blanc de Noir: This very popular Rosé wine, made with Pinot Noir, is a little darker than the previous vintage, thanks to an additional day of cold soaking on skins before fermentation, which also brings out a cranberry component that customers rave about. “It has our signature balance, a bit sweet at the start, but
a dry finish.” Pairs with a huge range of food dishes. 2011 Merlot-Cab Sauvignon: Made from Similkameen Valley grapes, this blend is drinking nicely now and provides customers with another red to choose from. One more tantalizing wine remains in racks in the barrel room. About 120 cases of 2010 sparkling wine continue their slow secondary fermentation as a tiny amount of yeast converts the remaining sugar. “We should try some,” he suggested, heading toward the winery to put one in the freezer to chill it. A few minutes later he popped the top off and pushed the cap of dead yeast cells down the neck to pour us each a glass. Not much fizz yet—that will come in the next step, when an yet to be determined dosage is added in the final stage—but an amazing wine with strawberry notes is emerging. Credit Johnson, Flaa and Kiwi winemaker Dan Barker for not rushing the process. It’s always been stored in low temperatures to keep the secondary fermentation slow. “We could speed it up by moving it into the (warmer) winery, but we’re not really about speeding things up,” he said. Tentatively to be called Tête de Cuvée, this 100 per cent Pinot Noir will be Creston Valley’s first commercial sparkling wine. I can hardly wait to ring in the New Year with a glass, proposing a toast of thanks to this visionary couple who are completely focused on producing premium wines, and succeeding admirably.

Grand Forker found safe off Honduran coast GF Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
A relief to all concerned has thankfully been realized in regard to a tropical mis-adventure. Tasha Brown of Grand Forks, who went missing off the coast of Honduras last weekend, was found alive, suffering from a mild case of dehydration last Wednesday, July 3.
Brown, 20, was one of eight who had set out June 29 on a boat destined for Roatan, which is considered the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands, and was stranded at sea for about four days after the boat ran out of gas. Greenwood Rugby tournament to go ahead Oliver

I’m a perfectionist in everything I sculpt, but my imagination really takes off working with temporary materials.” ‘Ghost Cat’ displays that need for exactness and fine detail; it’s a gorgeous study of a magnificent, often maligned animal that depends on its skill as a hunter to survive in an everincreasing urbanized landscape.

for the

Trail investing in its online connection valerie rossi West Kootenay Advertiser
A Trail tourist visiting the city through its website or a resident checking up on current events will soon be able to do so with more ease. Trail council has dedicated $50,000 from this year’s budget to revamp www. trail.ca because it sees the importance and value in an upto-date, user friendly site that is on par with other municipalities, said Andrea
Jolly, Trail’s communication and events coordinator. “Because online communication and information is the No. 1 resource for most people, it is important the city’s site is structured to handle all of its information,” she said. “The site is currently outdated and unable to accommodate some of the newer applications available.” The improved site will give the city more choice in appli-
cations, will be easy to navigate and will tout a modern look, she added. The hope is that it will also lend itself to promoting the city through branding, which in tern will attract new people to the Silver City. Jolly and Duane Birnie, Trail’s information systems coordinator, plan to pick a candidate for the new design shortly with the intention to have the new site live by next year.

Immunize Canada
With the arrival of warmer weather, many Canadians will be spending time outdoors to play, garden, or start home renovations – but some could be placing themselves at risk of the vaccine-preventable disease, tetanus, if they are not up to date with their immunizations. Tetanus is an acute and often fatal disease caused by a toxin released by bacteria present in our environment. Most individuals associate tetanus infection with rusty nails. While this may be true, tetanus infection can also occur from a minor scrape or puncture while gardening, or renovating, or even an animal bite. The bacteria that cause the disease tend to live in dirt, dust and soil and can enter the body through breaks in the skin or wounds caused by contaminated objects. The toxin that is released by the bacteria blocks normal control of nerve reflexes in the spinal column, resulting in painful muscles spasms that can affect
the ability to breathe. Immunize Canada reminds Canadians about the importance of being up to date on their tetanus booster. “The Canadian Immunization Guide recommends that all Canadians receive a tetanus booster every ten years,” says Dr. Susan Bowles, Chair of Immunize Canada. “The tetanus booster is safe and effective, and free for all Canadians, so there is no
reason why anyone should be unprotected,” states Dr. Bowles. “At the same time, it is important for Canadians to be proactive about their health,” says Dr. Shelly McNeil, Vice-Chair of Immunize Canada. “Now is the perfect time for Canadians to talk to their doctor, nurse, pharmacist or local public health office about being up to date on their tetanus immunization.”

“Now that it’s been 110 degrees (43 degrees Celsius) a lot of people are calling to find out when it’ll be open.” The village is hoping the public can be patient for at least a little while longer as the work is anticipated to take another two weeks to com-

Bluegrass music is well known and appreciated for its wholesome nature and the sort of wellbehaved crowd it attracts.

“We could speed it up by moving it into the (warmer) winery, but we’re not really about speeding things up.” Bob Johnson The Gewürz, spicy, crisp, aromatic and very, very clean tasting, was the perfect match to our wideranging conversation, one that was interrupted several times by return visitors to Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery who wanted to say hi to the congenial owner. In Johnson’s professional career he was a reservoir engineer for an oil company and he’s been winding down that part of his life for a few years now. He has returned to Calgary for several months each winter, leaving Petra and hired help to do all the pruning and gear up for spring. Despite pleas to stay on, he said he is now officially out of

biz, free to focus year-round on the winery and, even more importantly, the marketing of B-G wines.
