Do you know how fast the province’s debt is growing? Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) British Columbia director Jordan Bateman says in his meteoric, 14-day B.C. Debt Clock tour launched in late June, people frequently mistook the dollar figure it displays as millions – and were shocked to discover it was billions. “This is why we have the debtper-person number on here, too. [One dad] said: ‘that’s $12,000 for every man, woman and child? I have five, so that’s $60,000!’ So, good reactions, and lots of disbelief.” During his July 9 visit to Tim

Interlakes region area hits high fire danger rating Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) and Wildfire Management Branch (WMB) weather stations report the fire danger rating has moved to extreme for the first time this season, near Middle Lake in the west Chilcotin. The fire danger rating is moderate throughout the rest of the CFC, with areas of high in the Quesnel region, near Riske Creek and Tatla Lake in the Chilcotin, and Deception, Prairie Creek and Windy Mountain in the Interlakes region. As of July 9, there have been a total of 57 wildfires in the CFC this season, 44 person-caused and 13 lightning-caused, burning 1,068 hectares. The Chilcotin has accounted for 26 of the person-caused fires. The CFC staff reminds the public there is an open burning prohibition in place for the entire Cariboo-Chilcotin region, banning any backyard and industrial waste, slash or grass fires, which went into effect on April 15. The public is also urged to be vigilant with any type of fire use, including campfires, and to properly and safely extinguish cigarettes. Meanwhile, the CFC’s Quesnel-based Blackwater Unit crew continues to work on a lightning-caused wildfire near Mount Brew, east of Likely and north of Quesnel Lake. Watch Lake & District Women’s Institute always welcomes new ladies For many years, the Watch Lake & District Women’s Institute (WL&DWI) members looked after both the concession stand and the “cook shack” at the annual Watch Lake/ Green Lake gymkhanas held the second Saturday in July and August (July 13 and Aug. 10 this year). It was a major fundraising project for our W.I. and a great deal of work, planning and effort went into making sure everything went well, WL&DWI president Ruth Kachur says, adding there was plenty of pop, hotdogs and chocolate bars for the hungry crowds. Over the years, however, with the decline of membership and the extreme difficulty of getting volunteers to help at these events, Kachur says they had to look for other ways to raise money.

One of the new fundraising ideas was to try a bake sale at the local mall before Christmas. “It was hugely successful – beyond our wildest dreams – and there were a lot of goodies to be had and everything sold out.” Now, the WL&DWI has an Easter bake sale for the end of March and there are always a lot of bunnies, Easter eggs and all sorts of Easter goodies for sale, she adds. Another fundraising idea, which has been successful and not nearly the work, is helping out at the meat draws at the Dusty Rose Pub in 70 Mile House on Saturday afternoons on a rotating basis, Kachur says. She adds it is a good money maker and does not entail the work of the gymkhanas. “We are looking for another prosperous year and we have even gained a new member.”

As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

The 100 Mile House Wranglers Junior B Hockey Club is looking for a few good men and women to help the local team put on the best show in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Folks who want to be involved with the brand new hockey club will want to show up at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre (SCRC) for the 100 Mile House Wranglers Volunteer Fair on July 18 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. There are all kinds of volunteer positions available this season – from ticket sales to bus drivers and everything in between. Club president Tom Bachynski says the Volunteer Fair is the “big callout” for volunteers this season, and prospective volunteers only need to bring some ID (for the club data base) and a willingness to help out. There will be a sheet with the list of the volunteer duties and there is a wide variety of tasks to pick from. Bachynski says the club’s board of directors chose the 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Seniors injured in a Fish report motor-vehicle incident with a moose

Two seniors were injured when their vehicle impacted a moose on Highway 24 on July 6. It also killed the moose and severely damaged the vehicle. 100 Mile House RCMP Sgt. Don McLean says the call came in at 9:45 p.m. and police, fire departments and BC Ambulance Service responded to the scene in the 6300block of the highway. Both occupants, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, were transported by ambulance to 100 Mile District General Hospital, he says, adding no update has been provided as to how they are doing now.

Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department chief Doug Townsend says it happened less than a kilometre west of Fawn Creek Road. He notes the Toyota careened off the road into the bush after hitting the moose. The man was extricated from the car by 100 Mile House FireRescue (OMHFR), which provided the highway rescue services, Townsend says. “It’s just amazing they are alive; it was a tremendous impact. Not only with the moose, but going off the road into those trees, that would be a secondary impact.” Townsend explains his department attend-

ed with two engines and a dozen members, including five first responders, and remained on scene for about three hours. Mutual aid was also provided by Lone Butte Fire Department and OMHFR, he adds. The fire chief notes drivers impacting moose are always going to incur severe vehicle damage and risk personal injury, so he reminds folks this is a wildlife area where animals are frequently on the roads. “With something the size of a moose, it is always going to be a horrendous accident.” McLean adds the RCMP left the highway open for the most

BC Coroners Service urges water safety

With the promise of another sizzling summer ahead, the BC Coroners Service is warning residents and visitors to take extra care when enjoying water-based activities at lakes, rivers, pools and the seashore. Last week, coroners in British Columbia have begun investigations into four drowning deaths, reinforcing BC Coroners Service statistics that show a high percentage of drownings in B.C. occur in the months of May through August. The four deaths occurred in different parts of B.C. and encompass four entirely different sets of circumstances: a three-year-old child in a backyard swimming pool; a teenager who slipped and fell while playing at the top of a waterfall; a middleaged man tubing on a fast-running river; and another man who died in a swimming incident in an Interior lake. The variety of cases shows the many dangers that water can hold and, thus, the need for extra vigilance whether swimming, boating or even just walking along the edge of a body of water. A review of drowning deaths over the past five years shows many victims are unfamiliar with the waters involved and therefore don’t see the risk or underestimate it. Those risks can include such things, such as unexpected currents, steep and sudden drop offs, or unusually high water levels because of heavy rains or late spring runoff. In a fast-flowing river, six inches of water can sweep a person downstream and two feet can carry away most vehicles. The BC Coroners Service also stresses that alcohol and water-based activities don’t go together, any more than drinking and driving do. The review showed that fully 40 per cent of the victims were impaired by alcohol or drugs.

CFEC goals set for 2013/14

At its May meeting, the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) board approved goals and objectives for 2013/2014. “These goals and objectives, which each have action plans and measures of success, ensure our accountabil-

ity and transparency to the South Cariboo community and our funders, including the Ministry of Children and Family Development,” said cochair Sheila Hart. The goals • Be a centre of

excellence; • Be an employer of choice; • Financial stability; • Increase community awareness; and • Enhance community collaboration. Some of the ways CFEC will achieve these goals include incorpo-

rating autism as part of its core services; providing educational and training opportunities for staff; launching a fundraising campaign; redeveloping its website; and participating with the South Cariboo Fo o d S ecurity Committee.

108 lady golfers practiced for Pud Griffin Memorial Tournament

The 108 Ladies Golf Club played a game of Two Ball, Best Ball on July 2, imitating the Pud Griffin Memorial Tournament, which took place on the following weekend. The team of Lynda

Lewis and Gisela Neuber won the lownet competition with a score of 30. Pauline Weigelt and Lorraine McCaffrey were second with 31 on a count back over Billie Scott and Millie Halcro who took third. The low-gross top

3 winners all came in with scores of 42, but after the count back, Joanne Garrow and Leslie Bell were awarded first place. Annie McKave and Cathy Waite took second and Kelly Bucknell and Angela Batalha were third.

Seniors enjoy puttering around at 108 Golf Resort

Twenty-one golfers attended Seniors Day at the 108 Golf Resort on July 4. It was a nice day for a round under the “total putts” format, except for a cool wind in the morning. Kris Anderson took first place with 15 putts. John Tomlinson had 16 putts and finished in a three-way tie for second place with George Tittel and Bonnie McColl. Maureen Menzies had 17 putts on her scorecard and settled for a fiveway tie for third place with Peggy Chenier, Gisela Neubert, Ervin Hannah and Dave Funk.

It features standard events, such as barrel racing, stake race, pole bending, key hole and a few novelty races for age divisions – peewee, junior, intermediate and senior. Events start at noon and rider registration is at 10:30 a.m. Competitors ride for ribbons and prize money, and there will be aggregate winners determined in each division. Points carry over to the Aug. 10 gymkhana in the race for overall aggregate prizes. Bring along a lawn chair and sit in the shade of the aspen trees or find a premium seat on the bleachers. A full concession stand and refreshment garden will be in operation. The gymkhanas are hosted by the Watch Lake/North Green Lake Community Association and have been a summer highlight for locals and visitors in the community for more than 50 years. Says spokesperson Dimps Horn: “It’s such a beautiful gymkhana ground and nice event for people to come to.” Gate admission for all ages is $2.

Lake Of The Trees open house makes a splash

Lake Of The Trees Bible Camp (LOTT) was its own oasis during its Community Open House on June 22. While heavy rain and flooding hit surrounding areas, LOTT saw clear blue sky and sunshine until its closing hour when clouds rolled in. It provided a clear window of opportunity for fun and enjoyment for the 100

guests of all ages who visited the camp for a free barbecue and to try out the many activities offered there. Camp director Tom McIntosh says the waterfront and its giant “Blob” water toy was a big attraction, with many of the adults giving it a try and having a lot of fun. The climbing wall, and pellet gun and archery ranges also saw a great deal of action. “It seemed to be a really posi-

tive event that really encouraged camping constituents and firsttimers into registering their kids.” The camp received a number of registrations that day and McIntosh says spaces are still available for the summer season, as are camperships for those who need financial assistance. While trying to maintain a normal life for her other two children, she also attends nursing school, which she is doing because she was inspired by her ailing son. In addition, she is doing a documentary and interviews for magazines to spread awareness of rare diseases. Shipley was chosen from among more than 24,000 nominations for Mom of the Year, and if declared the winner, will get $100,000 for the charity of her choice and $10,000 for herself. “It’s already such a huge honour and I’m in awe that I’m among these great women.
