This road is slated to be paved but continual rain that won’t give roads and sidewalks in town a chance to dry up, has meant road closure is necessary for an extended period of time.
Rimbey man drowns in Blindman River By Treena Mielke Attempts by police, emergency crews and a fellow kayaker to revive a Rimbey businessman after he capsized into the Blindman River turned out to be futile. Wayne Cameron, 68, drowned in the river west of Highway 20 and north of Highway 12, west of Bentley. Staff Sgt. Gary Rhodes said Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the call of a possible drowning on July 5. A woman at the scene told RCMP she had been kayaking with Cameron when he decided to take off his life preserver because he was too hot. “Shortly after this they heard water running and turned a corner in the river to see a cement flood control structure in the river. The man went over the structure, which caused his kayak to tip, and he fell into the river,” said Rhodes. “He struggled to stay above the water but was unsuccessful. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.” The woman with Cameron dragged him onto shore and provided CPR until help arrived. Cameron, who operated E&C Oilfield Services, was taken by ambulance to Red Deer Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Above average participation has hampered construction in Rimbey and crews are at a standstill waiting for roads and sidewalks to dry up enough for work to proceed. Treena Mielke Photos
Rain holds up road construction By Treena Mielke Construction in Rimbey has turned out to be a bumpy road filled with unexpected delays due to rain, rain and more rain but despite the above average precipitation, work is ongoing. Rimbey CAO Tony Goode said at least part of the million-dollar summer construction program was slated to be wrapped up by mid June but the wet weather has slowed things down. He noted construction on 53rd Street in front of the aquatic centre has been completed except for paving. “The sidewalks, curb and gutter
and road base is in but it still needs to be paved before you can drive on it.” Construction is also ongoing at two intersection on 51 Street and one intersection east of the cemetery due to drainage problems. The sewer has been lined and the road surface ground down to help level out the dips on 58th Ave. This road is also slated to be paved along with 53rd Street. A trail system in Rimbey, in the works for some time, will begin this summer. Goode said construction of 1.5 ki-

lometres of trails will begin next month with the first leg to run from the hospital to the recreation centre. The trail will continue on the south side of Highway 53 along the right-of-way of SJC Holdings and the west side of the Giebelhaus property until it connects with the trail at the Nesting Place campground. Council has budgeted approximately $140,000 for the trail system.

OPINIONS
A good start on the bucket list I’m not sure if I like summer or Christmas best, but, really, I think it would have to be summer. It’s cheaper, it lasts longer and Mother Nature does all the decorating. Plus, it’s much warmer. The downside, of course, is it’s over faster Treena Mielke than a wave on the ocean On The Other Side or a sunset that suddenly, without warning, drops out of sight. This year, I decided to make a top 10 list of things to do before summer mysteriously vanishes into oblivion like waves and sunsets. I decided to do the list so that one day, in the deep dark recesses of winter, I can pull up those memories and warm up. I decided on the list when I was sitting on the deck of an expensive home in Inveremere, B.C. I was lucky to be here. I knew that for sure. It’s not everyday a working girl such as I gets to live in such luxurious surroundings complete with fancy coffeemakers and expensive wines and hired help who do stuff I am perfectly capable of doing myself. The cabin was, by no stretch of imagination, not really a cabin at all, but one of those homes people look at when they drift by in a little boat, with an outboard motor that works sometimes, muttering to themselves, “Oh my gosh, look at those houses where all the rich people live. Must be in oil!” For a couple of days I lived in all this splendour, in the fancy cabin with people who had an even fancier boat that apparently never, ever broke down. And, it was then, when I was sitting on the deck, being humbly grateful for being there, I thought about the list. And as I pondered the idea, I realized a couple of my summer bucket list things had already happened. It had to do with flowers and children and doing that thing so many of us adults forget to do and absolutely nothing to do with the fancy cabin in which I was temporarily housed. Live in the moment. Stay in the room. Feel the sunshine. Hear the laughter. Watch a child. Do what they do! I was out walking through a brown ribbon of a trail with two of my grandsons; one in a stroller, one on a skateboard. The sun obligingly smiled on us and in the background these great huge craggy mountains filled in the rest of the postcard day into which we had been dropped. And so we walked and talked, with me stopping every now and then to pick a flower. They were dotted all over, these brown-eyed Susans, springing up in reckless abandon, the way Mother Nature does her decorating. My grandson was talking to me, seriously like he does and the baby was not, mostly because he can’t really talk a lot yet, only suck his thumb and rub his tummy and observe. I didn’t think about it until later but I realized I could check one thing of my list. Spend quality time with grandchildren. And, it simply happened because I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Traipsing through the woods with two handsome boys, feeling the sun warm on my hair and emerging with a handful of flowers. Does it get any better? Moments. They only need to happen once to provide a memory that will last forever. Life is good that way. Now for the rest of the list!
End of the Arab Spring? If the opposition leaders in Egypt had any strategic vision, they would not have launched the mass protests that caused the army to oust President Mohammed Morsi on July 4. They would have bided their time and waited for the next election because there will still be a next election in Egypt, despite the coup, and now the Muslim Brotherhood might actually win it. Morsi is now under arrest and the passionate demonstrations and sporadic violence in the streets of Egypt’s cities — close to 100 people have been killed since the coup — make it hard to imagine that any compromise is possible. But Egypt is not Syria: the population is relatively homogeneous, and there is little risk of a civil war. What is happening is a no-holds-barred struggle for power between rival political movements, in a system where the political rules are newly written, hotly disputed, and poorly understood. And all the players have made some serious mistakes. President Morsi got a narrow (51.7 per cent) majority in last year’s presidential election. The Muslim Brotherhood therefore assumed its core project of forcing its own version of Islamic values on Egyptian society had the support of half the population but this was probably not true. Many people voted for Morsi because the only alternative in the second round of the election was a leftover from the Mubarak regime or because they were grateful for the Brotherhood’s unfailing support for the poor. Even if they had all supported the Islamization project, trying to impose fundamental changes on a country with the support of only half the population was unwise. The constitutional changes Morsi imposed — and his ruthless tactics for pushing them through — convinced many people in the secular opposition parties that he was an extremist. He was actually trying to walk a fine line between public opinion and the demands of extremists in his own
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist
party but the secular parties responded with extraconstitutional tactics of their own. The mass demonstrations that began on June 30 were explicitly intended to trigger a military takeover that would sideline Morsi and the Brotherhood. They have succeeded, but the army knows it cannot stay in power. It immediately appointed Adly Mansour, the head of the Constitutional Supreme Court, as interim president. The schedule Mansour announced for constitutional revisions, a referendum, and new parliamentary and presidential elections has already been rejected by both the Brotherhood and the secular parties. Once the histrionics have died down, there will be new elections some time next year, and the Brotherhood cannot be excluded from them without turning the whole process into a farce. By then the Brotherhood will doubtless have seen some leadership changes that bring a younger generation of leaders to power, and it will benefit from a sympathy vote from those who see the military intervention as illegitimate. It might even win the next election, despite all Morsiís mistakes this time round. That’s the real irony here. If the opposition parties had only left Morsi in power, his unilateral actions and his inability to halt Egypt’s drastic economic decline would have guaranteed an opposition victory at the next election. Now it’s all up in the air again. Democratic politics is far from over in Egypt. Foolish things have been done, but the Arab Spring is not dead. Rimbey woman charged with assault in bar fight In the last week, the Rimbey RCMP responded to 32 calls for service. Highlights include domestic assaults, trespassing complaints, fraud, theft and other criminal matters. Dust-up sends one to hospital Late July 6, officers responded to a bar fight at one of the local watering holes. A 36-year-old woman had been punched and kicked by another female and was taken to the hospital. The victim was treated for minor injuries and later released. Police located the alleged assailant, a 23-year-old Rimbey woman and charged her with
assault. Alcohol was a factor in the incident. Making headway in oilfield thefts The RCMP in central Alberta are diligently working toward capturing thieves targeting oilfield sites in rural areas. Mounties from Breton and Rimbey are working together to solve these all-too common offences. To date, several offenders have been charged and stolen property recovered. However, this continues to be an ongoing problem. If you observe a suspicious vehicle or person lurking near a lease site, please call the police immediately.
Tyler Jordan DD (Honours)
Police investigate domestic violence Rimbey RCMP responded to several domestic disputes last week. In one case, a woman allegedly physically assaulted her husband. The accused, a 42-year-old Edmonton woman, was arrested and charged with the offence. As is often the case, alcohol was a factor in this and many other matters. The Rimbey Victim Services Unit assisted police in many of these cases. Be prepared for violent weather Police received a 911 call from a concerned citizen reporting a funnel cloud was sighted north of Rimbey. When the fierce looking cloud approached our detachment area it dispersed and disappeared into thin air. Mother Nature seems to be relentless this year and is always unpredictable. Please make yourself and your family aware

Rimbey Show ‘n’ Shine gets bigger Continued from page 7 “I have been rebuilding cars since I was a teenager,’ said Trevor Comfort. “And now, my body is tired, but up here (in my head), it’s still telling me to keep going.’ Eric Hornsey from the Rimbey Historical Society carefully drove the 1912 Auto Wagon back to its home in the Smithson Tuck Museum after the Show ‘n’ Shine. Tapping the wooden wheels gently, he explained they can become lose as the wood dries out and the utmost care and attention is required to keep it in tip-top shape. A 1935 International truck was also on display. The truck is significant because 1935 is the first year the International truck was made. Cheryl Jones, Pas Ka Poo Park administrator, said this year’s event attracted people from Edmonton, Rocky Mountain House, Calgary and surrounding areas. Trophies were given out for the best truck, won by L. L. Wheeler with his 1952 yellow Chev; the winner of the trophy for the best car went to Elle Jamart from Calgary with her 2002 SS Camaro; and the trophy for the best modified vehicle went to Phil Matosevic with his 1966 Pontiac Parisian. Bill Kenney’s 1946 Studebaker was the oldest vehicle entered.

Rodeo continues in Rimbey for almost half a century By Treena Mielke
Brianne Depont comes off her steer and lands on her back, cutting short her effort at last year’s Rimbey Rodeo. File photo
For almost half a century the Rimbey rodeo has been an exciting, action-packed event, giving local and outof-town cowboys and cowgirls a chance to step into the limelight and show off their talent in front of an admiring crowd. Despite a solid background of hardworking folks who keep the rodeo alive year after year, some things have changed since that first rodeo was held in 1966. ‘Back in the day’, Rimbey was the destination of choice for professional chuckwagon drivers, and they came in droves, their numbers even exceeding that of the Calgary Stampede. But that was ‘back in the day.’ According to the history book, Over the Years, one year at the Rimbey Rodeo even more wagons ran here than in Calgary. Jack Everden, former secretary of the Rimbey Exhibition Association, confirmed that statement. “When we had race meets here, everybody just came with their wagons. We had a huge number of wagons here in Rimbey.” However, it turned out that the days of the professional chuckwagon races were numbered and Everden said, “it got too expensive” to bring them in. The history book states the first rodeo was held 10 years after the Rimbey Exhibition Association held its organizational meeting in 1956. Prior to the first rodeo, held in May 1965, meetings were held with Tom Dorchester and Jack Daines. The original board of directors was Spen Muddle, Frank Watt, Tom Mellis, Ken Smithson, Sid Butler, Lawrence Calkins, Neville Roper and Vergil Stevens.
The first rodeo was a little britches rodeo held in conjunction with professional chuckwagon racing and flat races. The Rimbey rodeo drew contestants from as far as Manitoba and British Columba and, the history book states it was the largest little britches rodeo in Alberta. The little britches rodeo became a thing of the past in 1980 when the board of directors decided to go with an amateur rodeo. The professional chuckwagon races were replaced with pony chuckwagons at that time. The rodeo began thanks to a group of hardworking people who wanted to see it happen, said Hazel Street, treasurer and promotions director of the Rimbey Exhibition Association. Hardworking people and dedicated volunteers is still what keeps the rodeo alive, she noted. “We have gone big, gone little and gone big and gone little over and over again, but throughout the years our board just keeps working hard. Sponsors and businesses continue to stand behind us year after year so it all works.” This year close to 200 entrants took part in the rodeo; 38 bull riders, six bareback riders, 10 saddlebronc contestants and 80 barrel racers. The miniature pony chucks were also part of the action. Rimbey Exhibition Association board members are Sandi Taylor, president, Vykki Johns, vice president, Gloria Christianson, Hazel Street, secretary and promotions, Ken Dennis and Steven Boyce, grounds managers, Cory Lawes, rodeo manager and Billie Littau, rodeo helper and April McLean, cabaret manager and public relations and Jessica Husband, queens’ manager.

to the point sentence. “I’m too lazy to work and too nervous to steal,” he joked. His time on the rodeo circuit, both as a clown and a bronc rider, has left its mark. Although his wit is clearly as sharp as ever, he admits he is a regular visitor to a chiropractor where he gets “stretched out.” “I have had 96 breaks,” he confessed in a telephone interview, which he participated in, coincidentally, after a visit to the chiropractor. “I should have been the inventor of the soft cast,” he added, ruefully. Despite his many injuries and the fact he has come to an age when some men may be content to be an observer rather than a participant — especially when it comes to rodeoing — Wanchuk has no intention of retiring. “When the people quit coming to rodeos, that’s when I’ll quit.” That Wanchuk’s sons, Kolby, 17 and Kyle, 11, are also rodeo clowns and perform with him turns each performance into a family affair, and no doubt, gives the long time rodeo clown reason to keep on clowning. “They have been clowning for many Ricky Ticky Wanchuk was the clown at Rim- years already,” said bey’s rodeo. Wanchuk, who was the clown at Rimbey’s rodeo, has been inside the rodeo ring entertaining crowds while keeping cowboys and cowgirls out of harm’s way for 36 years. A crane operator by trade, Wanchuk, who lives south of Sherwood Park, loves the rodeo. He loves it for a variety of reasons; the roar of the crowd and the adrenalin rush when he performs his crazy stunts. He loves the unexpected and the expected, the camaraderie and the freedom. In his own words, Wanchuk sums up why he loves rodeo in a short and

Amateur and pro golfers will hook up on the links of the Gull Lake Golf Course to have some fun, support a worthy cause, and no doubt, in the process share a few laughs about the predictable, unpredictability of golf. The eighth annual Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake Pro-Am tournament will be held July 19 and July 20. Carla McCann, who owns the Gull Lake golf course with husband Eamon, said this year’s pro-am tournament promises to be the highlight of the summer. “It is an exciting time for myself and Eamon and everyone who comes always has a really good time. The pros keep coming back year and after year and the cool thing is they keep asking to come back.” The adult-child tournament will begin at 1 403-843-2217 Office p.m. on Friday. Dynamites girls’ fastball team captures provincial title By Treena Mielke Rimbey Dynamite girls’ fastball team exploded on the field, sweeping round robin play with resounding victories to capture the gold medal win and earn the provincial championship. The Dynamites defeated Millhurst Ballstars 19-11 July 7 in Rimbey in the final game. Twelve-year-old Ashley Weiss, a starting pitcher on the team, was a little surprised they won handily, but very happy about it. “We have won all of our games so I wasn’t totally surprised.” The young ball player will be going into Grade 7 this fall and also plays hockey. Shelby Lane, 11, plays second base and shortstop for the Dynamites. She has been playing with the same group of girls since she was six years old. “It’s fun and I get to be with my friends. Baseball is my favorite sport probably because I have been playing it the longest.” Coach Chris Weiss is proud of
all of his players and grateful for the parents for their continuing help and support. “The team has played well all year, but they saved the best for last. They were really swinging their bats. The pitching was amazing, too.” Weiss said the provincial tournament went off without a hitch. “There was great sportsmanship. There were no incidents and we were lucky to have the weather we had. The stands were full. It was good to see and it was nice to win in our hometown.” The Dynamites started off the tourney by defeating Meadows Rapters from Edmonton 21-6. They defeated Nose Creek Crushers from Calgary 20–8 later that day. They then went up against Okotoks, scrapping a 12-11 win against that team. “They were a really strong team,” said Weiss. “It was a close game.” They went on to defeat Beaumont 10–4, and won against Wellington Royals from Edmonton 13-7. The Coronation Steelers won bronze.
The Rimbey Dynamite Girls Fastball team won provincials July 5 to 7, defeating Millhurst Ballstars in the gold medal game. In the back row are coaches Arna Schatschneider, Byron Burchnall, Chris Weiss and Rick Boyes. In the next row are Shelby Lane, Shae Boyes and Sydney Burchnall. In the next row are Keely Park, Jordon Balan, Olivia Kwaiffe, Lacey Burrage, Ashlie Mounkes, Ashley Weiss, Jada Schatschneider and Tia Hopper. In the front are Loni Mounkes and Taryn Corkery. Repairs sinking aquatic centre By Treena Mielke Re-occuring problems with the drainage system and electrical components of the spray park has temporarily turned the $3.2 million Rimbey Aquatic Centre into a white elephant. However, town officials are not giving up hope the problems will soon be rectified for good, and the pool and spray park will be open to the public. Tony Goode, the town’s CAO doesn’t lay the blame on anyone for the problems, which have left the town without the use of the outdoor pool for most of the summer. However, he said lack of communication between all the parties involved didn’t help the issue. Meanwhile, he is doing his best to rectify the problems. “We have had issues with construction and we’re having to deal with them,’ he said. “Some parts are under warranty. Unfortunately, the structural deficiencies aren’t.” Goode said the drain wasn’t properly constructed and has had to be replaced. Electrical components of the spray park were purchased in Florida and are proving to be difficult to replace. “We’re working on it,” he said. Goode understands people are frustrated because the pool has been closed most of the summer, but is hopeful it will be operational soon. “It has been filled and the chemicals added and water testing has gone out. It should be open soon.” He is not sure when the spray park will open.

FARM
Producers raising good crops, making less money With prices dropping over the past three months like a new-born baby giraffe out of the womb, governments/international buyers have started to notice and started buying appropriately. Egypt, Mexico, Japan and especially China, have all put their foot through the front door to secure some supplies at these current lower levels. Ultimately, while this is positive for the demand side of the equilibrium and helps support prices to the upside, the story remains that global production this year will satisfy this demand and then some. Let’s take a look at what China’s doing: It’s estimated Asia’s largest economy will need to import somewhere between three and six million tonnes despite production coming in somewhere around 110 million tonnes. The sustained increase in grain imports is mostly due to rising labour costs and policies that boost local prices, making Chinese crops less competitive and profitable to actually buy internationally vs. the domestic market. Specifically, over the first week of July, China bought more than 1.7 million tonnes of U.S., Canadian, and Australian wheat! Speaking of the Land Down Undaa, crops down in Australia have enjoyed some decent rains recently after a fairly dry June. This has prompted some analysts to bump their total output estimates to above 25 million tonnes for the year.
Wheat isn’t the only crop seeing better forecasts though — the Australian Oilseed Federation recently said they expect a canola crop of 3.3 million tonnes. This is significant as China opened their borders back up to importing Aussie rapeseed in April (ultimately competition for Canadian exports). Switching gears, with the Brennan Taylor growing season of the northern FarmLead hemisphere in full swing (and harvest starting in some places), we’re entering a period off “what if” weather trade more than anything right now. As I’ve been calling farmers to introduce the risk-free FarmLead Marketplace to them, the large majority of them tell me that their crops look pretty darn good. With warm temperatures expected to remain for some time, heading and flower stages could be at risk for cereals and canola respectively. Granted, with the extra humidity in the air lately, there is an increased chance of some clouds bring hail with them unfortunately,
as seen in the Airdrie region recently. The rains that fall here and there also create the need for fungicide applications on fields, yet there are many reports of shortages for chemical out there. At the end of the day, whether it is the dinner bell or beer clouds rolling through, I find it ironic that as producers do a good job of raising their crops, they’re only rewarded with lower prices. Granted there is some justification for lower commodity prices in general with a fairly high U.S. dollar, the bottom of this current market downtrend appears to be near. However, reader beware: we may see this bottom for some time. Market/sell proactively — betting on a sudden change of the trend isn’t necessarily always the best game plan. Brennan Turner is originally from Foam Lake, Sask., where his family started farming the land in the 1920s. After completing his degree in economics from Yale University and then playing some pro hockey, Mr. Turner spent some time working in finance before starting FarmLead.com, a risk-free, transparent online grain marketplace. His weekly column is a summary of his free, daily market note, the FarmLead Breakfast Brief. He can be reached via email (b.turner@farmlead.com) or phone (1-855-332-7653).
