Future’s uncertain for Mars waterbombers FLYING TANKERS: | Loss of B.C. contract, red tape from White House stalling plans for both iconic aircraft based at Sproat Lake.

‘The job we do, no other airplane can do. We are like a wet blanket...’

Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

The world’s largest water bomber entered its last firefighting season in B.C., but Port Albernibased owner Coulson Flying Tankers is trying to change that. In May, the ministry of forest announced this summer will be the last time they contract the Martin Mars Hawaii aircraft to fight forest fires. A government press release cited age and the difficulty it would be to fix and maintain the 1946 built aircraft as it is the last of its kind in operation. Hawaii Mars owner Wayne Coulson of the Coulson Group of Companies, has been in contact with ministry officials and plans to meet with new forest minister, Steve Thomson, to discuss the issue. He hopes to convince the minister that the Hawaii Mars should remain as one of the many tools that could be used to fight forest fires. “The job we do, no other

airplane can do,” Coulson said. “We are like a wet blanket. The province drops retardant ahead of the fire but the Martin Mars goes right on top of the fire and smothers it.” The Hawaii Mars was in Powell River doing just that last week, as it helped

douse a slash fire that grew to two hectares. Coulson explained the province fights fires by primarily using the indirect attack method, which is the use of air tankers dumping retardant ahead of a fire. However, the Hawaii Mars is a direct

attack aircraft, which means it drops water on top of the fire. He admitted since being awarded with an annual contract since 2007, the Hawaii Mars hasn’t been utilized much by the province, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“We are cheap insurance,” Coulson said, adding that the aircraft costs $800,000 to keep around and the contract with B.C. pays for about half that amount. “Every aircraft has a place, like a tool in a toolbox.” The largest direct attack aircraft the province has, Coulson said, is the Bell 212 helicopter which carries up to 400 gallons (1,500 litres) of water whereas the Martin Mars carries almost 20 times more—up to 7,200 gallons (27,000 litres). He also questioned why the province relies mostly on the indirect attack method to fight fires, when places like Ontario, the United States, Australia and Greece rely primarily on

direct attack. “In the U.S., 85 per cent of firefighting is done the direct attack way, only 15 per cent is retardant,” Coulson explained. “Everyone everywhere else focuses on going on top of the fire.” The Hawaii Mars has been called upon to fight numerous major fires outside the province, such as the 2008 Mt. Shasta fire in California, 2009 Mt. Wilson fire in California and the 2011 wildfire in Mexico. Coulson spoke highly of the work the aircraft has done in those places and how it can continue on in the future. Forest ministry spokeswoman Vivian Thomas referred to a press release by the Wildfire Management Branch as to why the B.C. government will not continue using the Martin Mars. The release cited that the branch intends to tender a contract for a multi-aircraft, turbine amphibious scooper that would be used on an on-call basis.

Vietnamese pilots earn wings in Port Alberni Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

The Alberni Valley Airport and surrounding lakes have served as training grounds for the past year for Vietnamese naval officers learning how to fly. Victoria-based Viking Air sold six de Havilland Twin Otter planes to the Vietnam navy about two years ago and part of that deal included 20 months of training. Lessons incorporated six months of learning English in Victoria

and then 14 months of learning how to fly. The Vietnamese Navy is responsible for patrolling the coast of Vietnam and tend to search and rescue calls, which is what these recently purchased planes will be used for. “We came up here [to Port Alberni] with our students to do their first solo flights because it’s a good airport,” said pilot instructor Steve Stackhouse, who has a home on Sproat Lake. “It has all of the facilities with none of the traffic. It’s a good

base for a student’s first flight.” With a slight change to the landing gear, the Twin Otters became boat planes, allowing students to practice landing and taking off at Sproat Lake, Great Central Lake and even by Harbour Quay. “Only two of them have ever been on a plane before flying to Victoria,” Stackhouse said, explaining the first class of eight graduated last week. Another 12 cadets are currently in their sixth month of the 20-month training

program. Those 12 will now start flight training and Port Alberni airport and surrounding lakes will be used extensively again for this class and probably for future classes too. “We will be doing more training for other governments as well,” Stackhouse added. “And there might be more with the Vietnam government.” In 2006 Viking Air purchased the rights to build de Havilland planes from Montrealbased Bombardier.

12 hours in a boat Navy League cadets raise funds with boat-a-thon SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Four members of the Navy League Cadet Corps. Armour Ford will spend 12 hours this Sunday, July 21 sitting in a small puddle duck boat in front of Walmart. They will hop into the boat at 8 a.m. and aside from hourly bathroom breaks they won’t get out until 8 p.m. No, it’s not some odd training ritual: the cadets are holding a boat-a-thon to raise money to attend a four-day leadership camp in Sooke from Aug. 8-11. Instructor Todd Flaro decided it would be a unique way to raise both the profile of Navy League in the city as well as some funds. They would like to raise $1,150 to send up to 22 cadets to the camp. editor@albernivalleynews.com

Surrell buys old Shell property SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Mike Surrell of Lady Rose Marine Services has purchased the old Shell property adjacent to his dock and plans to develop a commercial building in the near future. “I have purchased

the property and we’re going to clean it up,” Surrell said Tuesday. The property, nestled between Lady Rose Marine Services and the Marine Building at Harbour Quay, was formerly occupied by the Columbia Fuels

fuel tank farm. The waterfront depot was shut down in the spring of 2008. Remediation work began in 2011 and the building was demolished. The property will remain behind fencing until Surrell gets the paperwork, and until

he receives the final OK from his insurance company. Surrell was mum on future plans for the site. “I’m going to do nothing with it at this point except make it presentable so it looks clean for the town,” he said.

Last Thursday afternoon, on the side of a dusty logging road about 20 kilometres down Alberni Inlet, Schmitt and a small handful of volunteers released 65,000 Chinook smolts that were raised at Omega for the past year and a half. “This is a treat,” said Jake Leyenaar, from the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association. He praised Schmitt for “thinking outside the box” when it came to rebuilding salmon stocks.

Wi-Fi waves causing sickness, says woman

‘It started with a blast of pain in my head.’

CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A new cell tower erected last month on Maple Way in North Port Alberni has caught the attention of a local woman who experiences sharp pains in her head along with nausea whenever she is near anything that emits radiation. Benita Schluschen suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, or EHS. Whenever the former Alberta Telecom (now known as Telus) employee is exposed to Wi-Fi or cellular phone radiation she immediately needs to get away from it. “I was surprised to see that in the area and with a medical centre nearby,” Benita said about first seeing the new cell tower when she and her husband drove by. “Marcus stopped the car to go in to tell them about the dangers of cell phone towers.

Benita Schluschen and her husband Marcus hold up a radio frequency meter and literature on electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

“I waited in the car and started to feel really [ill]. I was hoping Marcus would come back soon.” Port Alberni Medical Clinic co-owner Dr. Marc Puts declined to comment. Even in the Schluschens’ home,

which is free of CFL lightbulbs, microwaves and cordless phones, Benita says she can still feel the effects of electromagnetic radiation as Wi-Fi waves are prevalent in her neighbourhood. The smart meter is

boxed and covered with material to lessen the radiation she says seeps into her home. Looking out her backyard, she can feel the emissions from the antennae towers located on a hill some distance away. Benita started experiencing EHS four years ago. It was triggered during a driving trip with her husband to visit their kids in Victoria. “It started with a blast of pain in my head,” Benita recalled. “I then saw this cell tower on College Drive and the main highway going to the university, a big cell tower, and that’s when I made the connection because as we drove away, the sharp pain disappeared.” Benita thought nothing of it at first, but the pain and nausea became recurring and she started experiencing hypoxia (oxygen deficiency) as well. Last November, she and Marcus moved from Qualicum Beach to Port Alberni after searching for an area that has as little cell, Wi-Fi and radio radiation as possible, but in proximity of work opportunities for Marcus, who is a photographer, and accessible to their kids.

New company awarded water taxi contract Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Alberni school district’s $400,000 annual water taxi bill shuttling students between Meares Island and Tofino will drop to $140,000 this year as a new service provider has been hired. Last week the school district signed a five-year contract with Tofino Water Taxi, with an option to extend for three additional years. The water taxi service takes up to 12

students per trip from the Village of Opitsaht to their schools in Tofino. School District 70 secretary-treasurer Lindsay Cheetham said the contract allows for a three per cent annual cost increase to cover inflation. The contract is for eight trips per day during the school year. “If there are enough students then the number of trips would increase,” Cheetham said, explaining the school district would

have to pay for any extra trips. “We are forecasting 30 students in the first year.” Cheetham added the reason for eight trips instead of six is because the elementary and high school have different start and end times. He also said the contract allows for pick-up at three different islands during one trip at no additional cost. The new contract was initially awarded to West Coast Aquatics last month,

but Cheetham explained the company revised their proposal due to an error that company made. Due to their revision, Tofino Water Taxi was chosen instead. For the last eight years, the Tla-o-quiaht First Nation was contracted to provide water taxi service on the West Coast, which was subcontracted to an individual. The school district paid $306,000 in the 2009-2010 school year, $410,000 for 20102011 and $400,000 for

2011-2012. A meeting between the First Nation band and the school district was supposed to take place last month, but hasn’t yet. Superintendent Cam Pinkerton had said that the previous water taxi operator was charging per kid instead of per trip, to explain the high cost. However, he also admitted that the boat was often half full. The school district spent $1,700 hiring Qualicum Beachbased Woodsgift Enterprises to write

the request for proposal for the water taxi and school bus transportation service on the West Coast. Cheetham said hiring a professional to write the RFP was a must. “It’s not something we come about very often,” Cheetham said

about writing an RFP. “I’ve never done it before and I’m not sure if Jerry [Linning, former school district secretary-treasurer] did it before. “It’s not easy as it sounds to write something like that.”

Coulson can re-bid From / 3

“The Coulson group can bid for this contract,” Thomas said. The Hawaii Mars is a propeller plane. It directly employs 12 people and the Coulson Group employ about 250 people.

Second Mars to be retired The retired Philippine Mars seems to also be in government limbo. The Coulson group announced three years ago that the retired aircraft was being donated to the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. The plane was even repainted its original blue last year in anticipation of retirement at the museum. However, when it will be delivered remains unknown. “It has to be signed off by the White

House,” Coulson said. “This is such a high profile asset and there hasn’t been a trade since 1992 because of problems internally in the government.” Coulson explained his group is supposed to get some ex-military assets in exchange for the Philippine Mars, but wouldn’t elaborate on what it is or what it would be used for, citing it’s still in negotiation. Add the fact that a Canadian company is trying to get those ex-military assets, then even more bureaucracy ensues, Coulson said. “I didn’t know there were so many lawyers in Washington D.C. and how every government department has its own lawyers,” Coulson said. “It’s a work in progress.” Coulson added he doesn’t think the Philippine Mars will be leaving this year.

Hazards all around us Seats are empty for political theatre There are far more questions than answers about the horrific train derailment and subsequent explosions that destroyed part of the downtown of historic Lac Megantic, Quebec earlier this month. It is quite likely that the death toll will be close to 50 people, as 13 are officially dead and close to 40 are missing. They had little chance, with a 72-car unmanned train of tankers filled with crude oil piling up and quickly turning into a fireball, just metres from where they worked or slept. This tragedy is causing people all across Canada to think more closely about the trainloads of goods that pass by their homes and businesses every day. In Langley, for example there are two very busy rail lines. Both pass through heavilypopulated areas, and transport a wide variety of goods, including hazardous chemicals, explosives, refined petroleum products, coal and yes, even crude oil. One recent CP container train had a prominent sign on it, proclaiming that the box was filled with fireworks. These products are an important part of our daily lives, and rail is generally a safe way to haul these goods. But the Lac Megantic tragedy reminds us to be fully aware of what surrounds us, to insist that rail companies follow good safety practices and to ensure that local governments, and particularly fire departments, are fully aware of the scale of a fire involving petroleum products and other hazardous goods — no matter how they are transported. — Langley Times

ICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark didn’t win a seat in time to join her 48 fellow B.C. Liberal MLAs in the legislature for the summer session she ordered up. By the time the byelection in WestsideKelowna is certified by Elections B.C., Clark will be off to Niagara-onthe-Lake, Ont. to meet with her fellow premiers in what is now loftily called the Council of the Federation. These gatherings used to be called First Ministers’ Conferences, and there was a set ritual, largely designed for the consumption of network television. Provincial premiers ganged up on the prime minister to demand federal “funding” for every conceivable need, just as municipal leaders get together each year to present their demands to

the B.C. government. Prime Minister Stephen Harper ended the show, declining to play the role of villain in this bit of political summer stock theatre, and it’s unlikely that any future national leader would reverse this prudent decision. The result, at least among western premiers, has been a quieter, more pragmatic effort to work together, rather than clumsy attempts to play a shell game with taxpayers’ pockets. The public got tired of this routine some time ago. I don’t need a poll to tell me this is one of the reasons for the decline in voter participation and engagement in issues. Today, politicians frequently remind themselves out loud that there is “only one taxpayer” supporting the squabbling layers of this over-governed country. And yet, the same mistake keeps being

made over and over by opposition politicians, and dutifully reported by the news media. The notion that all problems can and should be solved by “more government funding” is now so engrained in our education system that it seems inescapable. One of the NDP’s big “gotcha” items last week was the failure of the B.C. government to buy the latest sonar technology to locate and recover the bodies of people who have drowned in one of our thousands of lakes and rivers. As with the health-care system, as soon as something is invented, some assume a right to it, regardless of cost. Another big opposition target was the province’s failure to buy up remote properties in the Kootenays that have been discovered to be at high risk of further landslides such as the one that swept through a year ago.

‘The public got tired of this routine some time ago.’

The question of limits for protecting people who choose to build homes in risky locations seldom comes up in our politicalmedia theatre. The media’s key ingredients are sympathetic victims to fit their narrative that all corporations and governments are greedy, stingy, callous and incompetent in everything they do. What the opposition has dubbed “Christy Clark’s wheelchair tax” is another case in point. A Fraser Health Authority official patiently explained what was really going on here. An average $35 monthly rent for wheelchairs is charged at the majority of care facilities, which are contracted by the health authority. Operators charge as they see fit for maintenance, disinfection and replacement of this equipment, for patients who don’t own their own chairs. In September, a $25 fee is to be extended to the few facilities still run by Fraser Health, which have aging equipment and no fees.

QUESTION of the week

!

No love lost over labour To the Editor,

Do you think Port Alberni needs more public art?

Yes – 28 No – 13 This week’s question: Does the tragedy in Lac-Megantic make you wary of a bid to redevelop rail freight service on the E&N?

Vote at: www.albernivalleynews.com See us also on Facebook.com

Reality takes a back seat In all facilities, the fee is waived for those who can’t afford it. It would be useful for our politicians to frankly discuss the trend towards contracted health services, and the role of user fees in forcing people to take more responsibility for maintaining their own health. But that is not

what happens. The narrative of dumping frail, impoverished seniors from their wheelchairs has no relationship to reality, but it’s how post-modern political theatre is done. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Water, sewer, hydro and cost of living rise each year. If the paper mill closes, taxpayers will have to make up $5 million in tax shortfall. Will this be just like our buy of a lifetime $1 price for the plywood mill? That Trojan horse’s demolition and pollution costs were a taxing gift. If most Port Alberni residents are fixed income retirees and minimum wage workers, will we lose our homes in tax sales if we can’t pay these rising costs? Former Premier Vander Zalm privatized the Department of Highways and the world did not end; nor did successive NDP governments resurrect this facility. NDP created paramedic bureaucracy that firemen performed for free and response time was quicker. If government workers and Crown corporation remuneration remains above private enterprise, will we have to contract out some services? “We wish for

others what we have ourselves” is labour mantra but can export industry that determines our currency value and must compete on world market, ever achieve parity with public sector that doesn’t and just squeezes taxpayers? (i.e. does gouging by monopoly or by government deplete the pocket more?) Since Liberals aren’t funded by government unions, will they make firemen paramedics again, level the public and private sector playing field and outlaw the red circling of seniors? Is this inequality justified because union senior majority passed it in a democratic vote?

R. Frankow, Port Alberni

No praise for industrial ‘junk’ To the Editor,

I applaud our mayor’s support of the initiative to place more industrial junk in the South Port downtown area. It will simultaneously remind us of our industrial decay and decline of employment and of the fact that our downtown looks

like a dump, vacant buildings and all. Well done, indeed! Such new developments will well complement the pile of junk now outside city hall, doubtless a symbol of revitalization and growth. And what of a certain restaurant on Third Avenue that has gobbled up four parking spaces for an outdoor patio? Looks like undue favouritism to me.

Richard Berg, Port Alberni

someone who is shipwrecked and grabs whatever might float by. It’s a good survival technique; better than drowning. But if we want more than floating around the ocean amid a pile of debris, we need to plan better—for the 22nd and 23rd centuries, not the 18th and 19th centuries. And we have to preserve what is already working and build on it, not destroy it to develop something else.

how fortunate I am, to be able to go into my garden and pick peas or kale or tomatoes. My garden is doing very well from the care and nurturing it has had. So, I think this is a great time to dig it all up. Put in something new. Develop the area. Sort of like we are thinking of doing at Harbour Quay in “digging up” the businesses there along with the joy and the jobs they bring. Sometimes, when things aren’t going great, people grab on to whatever comes along. Kind of like

To the Editor,

Re: Get ready for Hydro rate hikes (B.C. Views, July 10). Yes, the BC Hydro rate increase tsunami is coming after the earthquake of BC government debt. This will hit lower income people – hard. All levels of government are increasing fees and service rates rather than raise income taxes on those who can contribute more and pay more property tax. I don’t want to see any drastic action to increase job loss, but governments at all

levels need to limit their spending growth to the level of inflation and get borrowing under control.

Phil Harrison, Comox

Bitterness unwelcome To the Editor,

I just want to say I am proud of your news coverage of this city. I am new to this community and love it. But my one major gripe is the people who think that they have the right to tell everyone who might consider investing here to go somewhere else. We should be greeting these possible investors with open arms to encourage investing in our city. I don’t mean to allow them to destroy what is ours, but instead to build on the strength of what we have. Many people might think I should not say the things I do but at least I have an open mind when it comes to the future of our greatest assets—our children. I am confident they will bring about the growth we so much need in this city.

Who is My Neighbour?

Shared Summer Services

Jesus tells a parable of a ‘Good Samaritan’ who acted as a neighbour. He suggests that a neighbour is not the one who looks like us, lives near us, or attends the same church or groups. Rather a neighbour is a person who reaches out to share God’s love. In a time of sharing worship, many of us are discovering that beneath the surface differences that make us feel sometimes that we are strangers, that there is a deep core of common faith that makes us neighbours.

goes to Lewis

Avrielle Lewis has won a home makeover from Coast Realty Group of the Alberni Valley. Lewis, who lives in the 2800-block of Third Avenue, has always been a hard worker and volunteer, but a rare medical condition has resulted in a reduced ability to continue working, according to her sister, Susan Cootes, who nominated Lewis for the contest. “A proud homeowner, Ms. Lewis has had a difficult time watching the exterior of her home degrade over time, unable to keep up with the work,” Coast Realty Group spokesperson Chris Fenton said. Coast Realty Group, Colyn’s Landscaping and Benjamin Moore are joining forces to give Lewis’ home a makeover this Saturday, July 20. Volunteers with the Coast Realty

team will give the home new external paint, some general maintenance, as well as a landscaping upgrade. “The time and money donated by Coast Realty, and its partners, will benefit Ms. Lewis while simultaneously helping to beautify the Alberni Valley’s downtown core,” Fenton said. This is the second annual Coast Realty Group Home Makeover contest. For the second year in a row, Benjamin Moore has donated the paint, while Colyn’s Landscaping has donated time, equipment, and expertise.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help. Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

If you own or run a business in the Alberni Valley, chances are you know who Bill Collette is. Collette is the executive director of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce and has been since March. The chamber is the voice of business for the Alberni Valley and Collette works to promote and support local businesses within the community. And considering he has run a couple of his own companies, he knows what he’s doing. Collette started working at the age of 12 for a fly-in fishing resort at Bluffy Lake in Northwest Ontario. It was an experience he enjoyed and repeated every summer. “I lived on my own in a log cabin there since I was 12,” Collette said. “I just loved it.” When Collette finished high school, he studied human resources development at the University of Winnipeg. Realizing that a career in the National Hockey League was probably not in the cards—although he loved to play ice hockey—he traded the jersey and fishing pole for a shirt and tie and started his career at Western Inventory Service. He worked at the company for eight and half years and moved up the ladder to become a regional vice-president, based in Vancouver. Collette left Western Inventory Service

when his joint business with his wife Jennifer, Mad Science of B.C., took off. Mad Science was a children’s entertainment and education-throughscience program employing more than 20 part-time people, based in Parksville, with a satellite office in Surrey. After nine and half years, Collette and his wife sold their shares as they were increasingly needing to be in the Lower Mainland, but wanting to remain on the island. He and Jennifer then opened up a Boston Pizza franchise in Parksville and after six years, sold it last year. He also did a

short stint at the Alberni Valley News’ sister paper, Nanaimo News Bulletin as the circulation manager. While Collette dismissed dreams of playing professional hockey, he didn’t completely hang up his skates; nor the fishing pole. He still fishes and he still plays hockey, albeit old timers’ hockey. He also officiates for minor hockey. “It’s a fun way to stay in the game,” Collette said. “I’m a pretty restless guy and I like to stay healthy.” Collette owns a 20-foot boat and on the day of this interview, he had just gotten back from a little trip up the

Alberni Inlet where he saw a mother bear and two cubs. Collette also ran a government funded summer camp with Jennifer from 1997 to 2012 designed for mentally and/or physically challenged children between the ages of five and 18 years. They hired university students to work as camp leaders. Collette and Jennifer have three children. Danielle is getting a Masters degree in occupational therapy at UBC, Rachelle is also in Vancouver pursuing an acting career and their youngest, Jackson is studying engineering programming at the University of Victoria. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Christopher Sun The Vancouver Island Health Authority has hired 119 nurses, six of them for Port Alberni’s West Coast Hospital. Of the six new WCGH nurses, five were hired to work in medical surgery and one hired to work in community and mental health. “We hired them as casual nurses,” said Joanne Maclaren, VIHA director of practice services. “It’s a nine-month, temporary full-time rotation.” Maclaren said the health authority normally hires this many new graduates around this time each year. During the nine-month contract, nurses can apply for permanent positions as they become available.

PUBLIC NOTICE

RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, September 9, 2013 may sign the initiative petition. Individuals may only sign the petition once, and must sign the petition sheet for the electoral district in which they are registered at the time of signing. Signed petitions are available for public inspection. For More Information: The initiative application and draft Bill are available for public inspection on the Elections BC website and at the Elections BC office at the address below. Sensitivity limiting in age of Wi-Fi From / 6 However, technology is constantly expanding its reach. “I’m limited as to where I can go,” Benita said, explaining she no longer visits shopping malls or restaurants and even had difficulty visiting city hall recently to pay their property tax. “The cellphone radiation is like having a clamp on my head. It squeezes, builds pressure and it doesn’t leave you until you are away from all these elements.” Even visiting a hospital is problem because of all the wireless technologies they have, Benita explained. To cope, Benita wears a hoodie made partially with silver threading and a hat that she lined with a fabric and copper mesh material when she goes out. It looks like normal clothing and seems to block out cellphone radiation, but not Wi-Fi as that’s a different kind of radiation.

‘The cellphone radiation is like having a clamp on my head.’ – Bonita Schluschen

Marcus demonstrated how the material worked by holding up a radio frequency meter towards the antennae towers which can seen from their back deck. The meter emitted a loud, screeching sound and the number on the screen jumped. However, once a sheet of the mesh material made partly with copper was placed in front of the meter, the screeching and number dropped. Dr. Joanna Oda is the public health and preventative medicine resident for Vancouver Island Health Authority. She sympathized with Benita’s ailment, but explained there is no universally agreed

upon definition for EHS in the medical community. “I am sure her symptoms are real and I don’t want to dismiss her symptoms,” said Oda, who has never met Benita. “But unfortunately there is no way to attribute her condition to electromagnetic activity.” Oda said blind tests have been done to people suffering with EHS, but they failed because people felt the same when exposure to electromagnetic radiation was taken away and then put back. She also said there is no evidence that fabrics that are supposed to shield people from radiation actually work. The Schluschens disagree. They said medical doctors in Europe are increasingly agreeing that EHS is real and on the rise, citing a paper by the Austrian Medical Association and various papers by doctors in Sweden

and Germany. “Wi-Fi was used as a stealth weapon in the Cold War,” Marcus said, citing information he found from his research. “The problem is you can’t see it, you can’t smell it and you can’t hear it and if the government says it’s safe then people think it must be safe. But they forget that Health Canada has dropped the ball so many times. Asbestos, DDT, formaldehyde, they were all deemed safe before.” Benita and Marcus are members of a group called Citizens for Safe Technology. The website provides information and contacts for EHS. “It just changes your life,” Benita said. “It can come later in life and once it does, you’re paralyzed with it.” Last Monday, Marcus went to city hall to speak about the negative effects of cellphone and Wi-Fi radiation to city council. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

An 1898 horse-drawn Watrous pumper, pictured in front of a fire station in Victoria in this historical photo circa 1900, has been restored and will be at the Steam-Up and Antique Machinery Show this weekend at McLean Mill.

Steaming up at the mill SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

McLean Mill National Historic Site will be steaming this weekend for the Steam-Up and Antique Machinery Show. The Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society, Alberni Valley Museum and Alberni Valley Tractor Club have teamed up for this event, which will feature all manner of

steam machinery both past and present. Ray Barron of Port Alberni was instrumental in getting a 1898 horse-drawn Watrous pumper from the Victoria Fire Department restored. the pumper will be at the mill this weekend. The 1917 Farquhar steam traction engine restored by Les Stevens, Russ McCoy and Bob Pfannenschmidt will make its debut at the

mill this weekend as well. The R.B. McLean Lumber Co. bought the tractor to run as an auxiliary steam engine to power the planer mill, but it was never actually fired up. Numerous other displays will be up around the mill site. To book a ticket on the steam train, please call 250-7231376. Walk-ins can pay admission at the mill gate on Smith Road.

Blazers ready for U16s The U16 girls provincial fastball championships kick off at Echo Minor in Port Alberni this Friday, July 19 at 9 a.m. The Alberni Valley Blazers 97 play host to the 16-team tourney, which includes Langford Lightning, Sooke Cyclones, Nanaimo Breakers, Vancouver Lakers, Richmond Islanders 98, Surrey Storm 97, Surrey Storm 98, Langley Rebels 97 (unofficial), Abbotsford Outlaws 97/98, Kelowna Heat, West Kootenay Rockers, Prince George Thunderbirds, PoCo Ravens, Ridge Meadows Rage 97, and South Delta Invaders 97. “This is high-calibre

play and we are thrilled to be hosting the event,” Blazers coach Shannon Charlesworth said. The Blazers have a core of seven players who have been with them the longest, and they are coached by Tony Schutte, who played to hometown crowds in the Midget A provincials four years ago. One of three team

captains, Chelsey Charlesworth, 16, has played in five consecutive provincial championships. She won gold last year, played on the bronze medal Summer Games team in the U14 division representing Vancouver island select team, she pitches and brings a strong bat to the lineup. Captain Shellsea Steed, 16, is also a big part of the core group or returning girls who have been together for six years, Shannon Charlesworth said. group of girls is the quarterback of the team, playing the catching position and controlling the plays. She leads with a strong bat. She has her work cut out for her this weekend with temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius and playing behind the plate underneath all that catcher’s gear. The team is hoping to attract good crowds for the championship. “It’s nice to play at home with the support of the community because it really pumps the girls up to see friendly faces in the crowd,” Charlesworth said. “It also helps to be familiar with the playing fields.”

Cass Parker won low gross. Yvette Pedersen took low net. Nancy Blair had the low putts. Pars were made by Katy Lekich on No. 11, Kathy Toms No. 13, Kelly Gauthier and Louise Berlinski on No. 17 and Mara Williamson on No. 18. Chip-ins were carded

Gord Brooks, Angel Veller, Louise Waller in car, Brett Brenneman of Van Isle Ford and CO-OP manager Glenn Downton all stand by the vehicle that will be going to Sylvia Shiell when she comes back from her holiday.

Shriner Bill Allen was kept busy making pancakes at the CO-OP Member Appreciation Day on Saturday.

Louise Waller picked the lucky key that opened the brand new Ford and is seen here with CO-OP manager Glenn Downton talking to the winner, Sylvia Shiell, on the phone. Shiell is away on holidays and had her friend pick the key. Shiell drives a 14 year old Ford Escort and was extremely excited that she won.

The Uchuck Years

By David Esson Young

In The Uchuck Years, David Esson Young shares a quintessential coastal tale about his life on the Uchuck vessels—the historic steamships that played a central role in the communities on the west coast of Vancouver Island. In the Alberni Inlet, and later in Nootka Sound, the Uchuck— with Esson Young at the helm—carried groceries and liquor, freight and even beach-bound day trippers to and from civilization. There are few people who lived or worked in any of the coastal towns or camps in the area that would not recognize the name ‘Uchuck’. Esson Young spent 50 years with the company, growing from a teen working on Saturdays to co-owner and shipmaster. For those who have traveled aboard any of the Uchucks or who are familiar with the coastal waters of Vancouver Island, the terrain will be familiar and Esson Young’s tales will leave you reluctant to put the book down. Port Alberni visitors can see Esson Young’s memories up close at the Maritime Discovery Centre’s Ken Hutcheson Gallery, where memorabilia from the Uchuck and MV Lady Rose is on display until the end of summer. Published by: Harbour Publishing Available at: Maritime Discovery Centre, Salmonberry’s, Curious Coho List price: $24.95

Silk and Stitch is the current exhibit showing at the Rollin Art Centre. The show features a group of six local artisans: Janet Finch, Caroline Leger, Beverly Smith, Susan Shead, Elizabeth Yuen and Cynthia Bonesky. This is a unique exhibit of artistry that comes from working with fibres in a painterly way. This exhibit runs until Aug. 3.

Businesses can still get in on the action of promoting an Art Rave Festival artist for the month of August. Organizers are hoping businesses across Port Alberni will help promote the two-day inaugural art festival, taking

place at the Alberni Train Station and other locations on ‘Kingsway Corner’ and Argyle Street. For more information on hosting an artist, please call Wes Bloxham at Islands Gallery, 778-421-0090.

The importance of wearing a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) or lifejacket can’t be understated. It is a simple task that has the potential to reduce terrible loss in lives. 90% of drowned boaters were not wearing a PFD or lifejacket at the time of the incident.

DON’T DRINK AND BOAT!

• Supplies and Accessories

There’s only one way to responsibly mix alcohol with boating. Don’t. As a boater you are encouraged to boat smart, boat sober and make a commitment to staying safe on the water. Drinking and boating can be just as lethal as drinking and driving. In fact, alcohol is an element in over 40% of recreational boating fatalities. Local, provincial and federal law enforcement bodies take the matter very seriously. Boating while impaired is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada and alcohol-screening devices are regularly used on boaters.

A BOATING SAFETY COURSE! Not knowing the Navigation Rules, drinking alcohol or taking drugs while operating a boat, or choosing not to wear your life jacket is clearly not the smart thing to do. Taking a boating safety course is a good idea to ensure every trip is also a safe return trip.
