This button blanket, Gwiis-ganm’ala’a (button blanket) circa 1900, owned by the Laxgibuu, Nisga’a is being reproduced at the Nisga’a Museum this summer. It’s size is 180 x 130 cm (71 x 55 inches).
Century-old button blanket to be reproduced By Margaret Speirs THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - A 100-year-old button blanket is getting a new life as the Nisga’a Museum prepares to make a reproduction of it. The museum is creating a full-scale replica of a button blanket from the Laxgibuu (wolf) tribe of the Nisga’a Nation. “We are making it so that it can be handled and part of our ‘education collection,’ said museum director Darrin Martens, adding that although the museum also has the original, the reproduction will let visitors see how these types of blankets were made traditionally. The original blanket was repatriated to the Nass Valley in 2010 from the Royal British Columbia Museum as part of the
historical Nisga’a Treaty. It is currently at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa being cleaned and repaired so that it can be put on display under glass at the Nisga’a Museum “so that visitors and schoolchildren can see the differences and similarities between the two and why taking care of things is so vitally important,” said Martens. The history and narrative behind the original button blanket are unique: the “people at [the] time of [the] story were starving. The chief went hunting and saw a gaunt wolf which came up to him. The wolf was gaunt because he could not chew, having a bone stuck in the roof of his mouth. On seeing this, [the] chief immediately extracted the bone. Wolf then started talking and said that when the man heard wolf

howl, he was to come to the place where the howling was going on. “One day, chief heard [a] long howl and immediately went to [that] place. He found the wolf and near him some mountain sheep and two bear which wolf said he must take home. This was in payment for the operation. This did not happen on the upper Nass but somewhere between Prince Rupert and Inverness.” According to one of Dr. Charles S. Newcombe’s notebooks in the Royal British Columbia Museum archives, the blanket was originally sold to Newcombe in 1911 from Henry Smart of Gingolx. In discussions with Bill Moore (Sim’oogit Duuk) of the Laxgibuu, a descendant of Smart and symbolic owner of the image and its story, approval was grant-
ed to create a replica of the original button blanket. Fran Johnson, the museum’s manager and a member of the Laxgibuu, will lead the project, and will be assisted by two summer students from Laxgalts’ap. “We want the blanket to [look] like the original piece, so therefore we are using a three point grey Hudson Bay blanket, red melton wool fabric and mother of pearl buttons. Also, to ensure the blanket is pretty close to the original piece, the design and all buttons will be hand sewn,” she said. The project has begun and continues through August and the public is invited to come see the work being done. The team will work on the project in the museum’s education room Monday thru Friday from 1:30-3 p.m.

TERRACE - Hawkair has hired a person from Yellowknife to take over the running of the regional airline with the departure of Rod Hayward to a teaching position at the University of Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. Jay Dilley started his new job as president July 15 and comes to Terrace after eight years as vice president for Summit Air in the Northwest Territories. The company offers both passenger and cargo service to destinations within the Northwest Territories. Dilley holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Economics, and a Master of Science in Management. He has also worked at Arctic Sunwest Charters. “I’m very excited to be joining Hawkair,” Dilley said of his
new company. “Lots of good things ahead.” “Jay brings a tremendous range of experience in leadership positions within the aviation industry. The board is confident in Jay’s ability to build on the legacy of success Rod is leaving; he has the right skills, experience and values.” said Lindsay Clougher, a member of the board of directors of Hawkair. Hayward was in on the ground floor of the formation of Hawkair which began operations in 1994 as a cargo service before switching to passenger service in 2000. It now flies to Vancouver from Terrace, Smithers and Prince Rupert and, as of June with partner airline Central Mountain Air, has added service to Calgary. Hayward said he is confident Hawkair will continue to see growth in the coming years.
Kitimat Food Share program gets money boost to come here from other parts of the province and we need some provincial help,” he said. He was referring to a surge of people coming to Kitimat seeking employment, and who are not finding the path to a better life they were seeking. “There definitely is a disconnect between the skills the unemployed people have with what the industries are looking for,” said O’Neill. “There also is...the barriers that some of the un-
employed people bring to the table when they look for work.” Those barriers include attitude, life problems and history of violence and abuse, she said. The new surge of money for KCSS is immensely helpful to the organization, which doesn’t have any specific funding for the Food Share program, which is operated under the society’s literacy program. O’Neill said that the society has helped pay for the program by di-

many budgets they simply couldn’t take from to keep Food Share running. The literacy program, for instance, doesn’t run in the summer so there is no money to divert. The $50,000 from the District to carry Food Share into 2014 will be drawn from the District’s $200,000 reserve set aside for ‘social issues.’ When that money was set aside in April of this year, the intent
was to make the money available to front line social services. It would be used to provide a buffer against the strain many areas are already feeling with an influx of people into the community, many seeking employment. Back then, and in this latest debate as well, there were some minor concerns that the District providing money to front-line services might detract from their ability to get funds in the future from higher levels of
government. That is part of the reason KCSS didn’t get their originally proposed request from the District for the Food Share, which would have committed to two-year funding at $127,476. In explaining the Food Share’s need, O’Neill said that following the Canada Day long weekend, there were 16 people waiting at the doors of the WorkBC office, all asking for a service such as a soup kitchen.

Haida Gwaii, Alaska quakes may be linked By Quinn Bender The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - Preliminary research indicates the two powerful earthquakes that shook the north several months ago may be linked, offering seismologists a rare research opportunity into the predictability of earthquake and tsunami behaviour. Scientists in Washington State are preparing an article on the topic for peer review, while Natural Resources Canada seismologist Dr. John Cassidy has undertaken his own field studies that are pointing toward the same conclusion. “This is something that’s not really understood,” says Cassidy. “There’s a potential triggering by smaller earthquakes from a larger, distant earthquake, as waves from somewhere around the world pass through a certain region. That was discovered just over a decade ago. Our research will provide better assessments of hazards and how earthquake hazard varies with time. So when a large earthquake happens you may be able to high-
light areas that are more susceptible to future earthquakes.” Since the two powerful temblors that struck just 70 days and 300 kilometres apart – a 7.7-magnitude earthquake near Haida Gwaii last October, and a 7.5-magnitude earthquake Jan. 4 off the coast of Alaska – Cassidy installed instruments on Haida Gwaii to measure surface movements from the smaller aftershocks to get an accurate picture of the seismic fault and how it slipped. Instruments were also added to the sea floor to help determine whether the quakes have added pressure to the fault. The research is expected to show what controls an earthquake, and what dictates where where it stops slipping along the fault. Cassidy’s ultimate goal is to improve earthquake and tsunami response for Haida Gwaii but also Vancouver Island. The Haida Gwaii quake is seen as a miniature version of the mega-thrust earthquakes in these highly-populated areas. Haida Gwaii is still experiencing small aftershocks on a magnitude of one and two, which Cassidy says is normal

Fire crews head to the Yukon TERRACE - Fire crews from the northwest are in the Yukon helping fight wild fires ravaging the territory. Two initial attack crews from the Northwest Fire Centre are being sent to the Village of Carmacks, a community of 500 people located 177km north of Whitehorse. The Yukon is reporting an ‘extreme’ fire rating for Carmacks, where there are currently 15 fires, burning an area of nearly 12,000 hectares. tre and another unit crew from the Prince George Fire Centre. The B.C. crews are able to be deployed because most of the northwest region is seeing a low risk of wildfires, with the exception of the far north. There are still enough fire personnel available in B.C. to respond to fire activity here. According to the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources, B.C. crews can stay in other jurisdictions for up to 19 days, but can be recalled back to the province at any time.

Nishga Girl will be part of Canadian Museum of History
By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, QC has decided the Nishga Girl has a place in Canadian history after all. Following public outcry over the museum’s plans to remove the Nishga Girl from the Canada Hall, representatives from the Canadian Museum of Civilization have reversed their decision. Mark O’Neill, president and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and Chantal Schryer, the museum’s vice-president of public affairs, met with boat donator and Nisga’a Chief Harry Nyce, his wife Deanna and Ken Noma, president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, in Winnipeg on July 8.
“We concluded together after consulting and talking it out that the Nishga Girl can have a home and present a very important history in the future Canadian Museum of History,” O’Neill said. “This particular boat has taken on a far greater meaning, and far greater symbolism than perhaps people here at the museum thought.” The Nyces donated the 8.3-metre wooden gillnetter to the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1998 to represent the West Coast fishing industry. Nyce fished on the waters of the West Coast with the Nishga girl from 1968 to 1990. When Nyce was informed the museum was removing his old boat he was disappointed. “I couldn’t find any words,” he said. “I knew in the back of my mind that we weren’t going to let this happen.”
The Nishga Girl was built by Jack Tasaka, a JapaneseCanadian boat builder who lived in Port Edward. The National Association of Japanese Canadians raised money to have the boat transported to the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the late 90s. Noma told the Ottawa Citizen the decision to give away the Nishga Girl was an insult, and he was upset the organization wasn’t consulted prior to the decision. Following last week’s meeting, both Nyce and Noma are happy the Nishga Girl will remain at the museum. Nyce said he was pleased with the tone of the gathering. “[Museum representatives] were very respectful at the meeting. They apologized many times for the mistake,” said Nyce, who wore full hereditary chief regalia to the affair.

TERRACE - A new agreement between the Coast Mountains School District (SD82) and the Nisga’a School District (SD92) will see the districts sharing a business model and the services of CMSD secretary treasurer Alanna Cameron. Cameron will split her time between the districts, with the two districts each paying half of her salary – resulting in savings for both of the districts. The Nisga’a district passed the two-year agreement on June 18, with Coast Mountains passing it on June 19. “The intent of this agreement is for me to continue to work the same number of hours ... but to take on the additional responsibilities of another district,” Cameron said. “I will be one secretary treasurer working part-time for SD82 and part-time for SD92.” The agreement makes note of the challenges of attracting and maintaining quality candidates for senior po-
sitions in northern areas and smaller districts, and notes that Boards of Education are being challenged to find alternative and cost efficient methods to provide business services. “It is my understanding that that they were not wishing to fully replace the retiring secretary treasurer due to budget pressures/and an anticipated lack of qualified candidates,” she said. The change will see Cameron travelling to SD92 a few times a month – the agreement states she is required to be there at least two days a month for board and committee meetings. “I would anticipate commuting more than that at first just provide time to familiarize myself with processes/procedures and to build relationships with staff, ultimately the long term plan is for me to do much of the work remotely from my office here at SD82,” she said. This is only the second partnership of the sort in the province – Gold Trail, (SD74) and Okanagan Similkameen (SD53) are also operating under the same shared services model.

City wants help with surge of environmental assessments By Martina Perry

THAT’S IT. THAT’S ALL. THAT’S RIGHT.
T:14”
PRINCE RUPERT - With an abundance of projects proposed for the North Coast comes an abundance of environmental assessments. The City of Prince Rupert wants to the government to help lighten the load. The city will bring a resolution to the Union of British Columbian Municipalities (UBCM) convention later this year calling on the government to provide financial or other assistance to communities overwhelmed with a large number of environmental assessments. Coun. Joy Thorkelson brought up the idea after attending a recent meeting held by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) on a proposed project. Thorkelson said she wasn’t familiar with a number of issues, and felt it was unfair to consider the meeting part of project’s consultation process. “If that was a consultation it was very difficult to respond to... I have lots of information regarding fish, but I don’t have any information regarding bats or
air shed or any of the other things that were discussed,” she said. The CEAA does not offer funding opportunities to municipalities, leaving members of city council worried important questions and concerns will be missed. Coun. Judy Carlick-Pearson suggested the city have more than one councillor attend working groups to allow a greater level of expertise. But Anna Ashley, city councillor, said even with more than one councillor attending there’s likely to still be areas of uncertainty. She also said it could become an overwhelming commitment for council members. Ashley said if the city cannot get financial help from higher levels of government, the city should begin asking municipal and local governments to get an expert to help with environmental assessments. “There’s so many different issues... no matter how much research we do we’re probably never going to be experts,” Ashley said.

Tax creeps onto natural gas bills The Northern connector
TERRACE - British Columbians may have thought they got rid of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) this spring but the provincial government has now quietly tacked another levy onto natural gas heating bills. Called the Innovation Clean Energy (ICE) Fund, the tax amounts to .4 per cent of natural gas consumed. It appeared on natural gas bills as of April 1, the same date the HST disappeared, and also applies to fuel oil and some propane consumption. The tax is intended to subsidize companies and governments of various kinds developing so-called “green energy” technologies such as ones using solar, wind, wood waste or geothermal power. It’s actually the second time a tax of this type has appeared – it was also called the ICE Fund when it first surfaced in 2007 as an addon to heating bills. Payments to companies began the next year. The tax disappeared in 2010, the same year the HST was introduced, but not before handing out approximately $60 million of the $68 million collected over its lifetime. The remainder of the

money was disbursed to various projects after the ICE tax ended and new projects were financed with money from the province’s general revenue account. The province says it has provided more than $77 million to 62 clean energy and technology projects. This time around provincial officials expect the tax to bring in approximately $7 million a year for subsidies to green technology companies and projects. Authority for the ICE levy is contained within the provincial Social Services Tax Act which is why it was stopped when the provincial sales tax was replaced with the HST in 2010. So when the HST was stopped, the provincial sales tax reappeared and with it, the ICE tax. The original ICE monies went to companies such as Earth Renu Energy Corp of Delta which received $1 million to turn urban organic waste into natural gas. The T’Sou-ke First Nation at Sooke also received $1 million for a green heating and cooling system for use in an industrial greenhouse. But not all of the an-
nounced projects in the first ICE go around actually did receive money. That list includes Pytrade, a company which had its eyes fixed on Kitimat, and which, according to a July 2011 provincial government press release, was to receive $1 million. Pytrade’s plan was to use a fast-heating process to convert wood waste and other bio mass into oil to create electricity and to create bio-coal and biogas. Kitimat’s municipal council embraced the project but nothing has taken place since early announcements. “Pytrade did not enter into a contribution agreement with the province and no portion of the $1 million was administered,” said the provincial government in response to questions. “In March 2012 funding was rescinded as the project did not sufficiently meet the program’s guidelines.” In all 17 initially approved projects either withdrew from the program or were rescinded, a value of $18.5 million, the province added. That money was then reallocated to other projects within the ICE program.

Bryant said it’s important to note RTI is a 40-year-old facility that’s currently looking at new technologies to mitigate coal dust. The facility used a water cannon system last year which they determined wasn’t effective because of wind in the area. “We are looking at what other terminals are doing and try to look at solutions here,” she said, adding there are currently two water trucks on site and spray towers to keep coal dust down. Mayor Dave MacDonald said rail cars carrying coal may be part of the reason coal dust is sometimes heavy in Port Edward. Franzen said while he was travelling to Terrace on July 6 a train carrying coal was travelling toward Prince Rupert. “The way the light was hitting it you could see the coal dust billowing off each car that went by. It was absolutely horrible,” Franzen said.

Prince Rupert looks to educate boarders By Martina Perry
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Many of Prince Rupert’s young skateboarders and longboarders need a lesson in safety. That’s according to the City of Prince Rupert, which is planning to start dialogue with RCMP in hopes of avoiding potential tragedy involving boarders and vehicles. Coun. Anna Ashley suggested creating an educational campaign on skateboard and long-board safety after hearing concerns from numerous Rupertites, and witnessing risky incidents herself. “I’m not interested in trying to take away kids fun... but I think we have an accident waiting to happen,” Ashley said at the last city council meeting. On a dark morning Ashley said she witnessed two young people coming down a street while laying on a long-board, and didn’t notice the riders until the last minute. “Kids have fun and think nothing can harm them,” she said, adding some boarders act like the rules of the road don’t apply to them. Another issue Ashley has is that many of the young people on boards she’s witnessed haven’t been wearing helmets. “I don’t think they realize how dangerous it is,” she said. Coun. Judy Carlick-Pearson said she’s also seen many boarders without helmets, and suggested the city search for funding to
give helmets away to underprivileged kids. Const. Matt Ericson, community and media liaison for the Prince Rupert RCMP, said police have received complaints regarding long-boarders and skateboarders. Under the British Columbian Motor Vehicle Act there aren’t any regulations pertaining to skateboards and long-boards making riders wear protective equipment or rules on roadways. “When it comes to an enforcement standpoint, it makes things rather difficult,” Ericson said. While RCMP cannot punish riders for not wearing safety equipment or being a hazard to vehicles on the road, Ericson said RCMP try to bring awareness to young riders. Ericson said RCMP try to push skateboard and long-board riders to wear proper safety equipment, obey the rules of the road and most importantly be aware of their surroundings. “We really impress upon young people participating in these types of activities to do it in a safe, responsible manner ensuring their safety and others around them,” he said. “Impending traffic by driving in the middle of the road way and that sort of thing causes a real safety hazard for not only the skateboarder, but other motorists that are trying to use the road ways as well.” The city will instigate a discussion with the RCMP to for the campaign, possibly including the recreational department and school district in the process.

The Rainbow Warriors were a fraction of a second behind them, finishing at 78.81. During the day, the RTA Dragons recorded the fastest time in race two, finishing at 64.09. BC Hockey awards Terrace player King of the Mountain By Anna Killen THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Terrace hockey player Rhett Munson is one of three high school graduates in the province to be awarded a scholarship from BC Hockey to put towards post-secondary education. The District Scholarship
– North West recognizes students who have excelled in both their academic achievements and contributions to their communities and the sport of hockey. Munson made honour roll for all four terms of high school and was a leader on the Terrace Midget Reps’ squad – a team that showed
grace under pressure this year after their hopes of travelling to provincials were crushed following a controversial appeal process. But now Munson is off to Okanagan College to study civil engineering, where he will continue to play hockey for fun and fitness.
And with his graduation from both hockey and high school, that means his father, Darren, will be taking a step back from Terrace Minor Hockey – an organization he has been heavily involved in for the past seven years in a number of roles, including board member, vice-president, and team manager.
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - There might not be a fall run this year, but the date for the King of the Mountain Trail race is set and the 10km race on Terrace Mountain will be Sunday Aug 25. at 10 a.m. For anyone interested in the trail race, sure to be a
popular event, Willie Muller will be showing participants the route and teaching some trail running techniques during a practice run one month before the event. Meet at the Terrace Aquatic Centre at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, Contact info is Willie Muller 250-635-1129 or kookamal@gmail.com.

A new highrise…
Cameron Orr / the NORTHERN CONNECTOR
It’s a new highrise on the Kitimat landscape, but depending on who you ask it’s either a sign of better cellular service from Telus in the area, or an eyesore, according to some readers. Telus spokesperson Liz Suavé said that the company usually attempts to put antennas on top of existing, tall buildings but no such location was available in the area, that would bring the coverage they wanted. The 45 metre tall tower is expected to be fully operational by the end of July. She notes that Telus held consultations with the District of Kitimat during planning, which included showing plans at an open council meeting, and sent information packages inviting comment to about 200 residents and businesses. The tower costs about $500,000.
Carol Leclerc takes newly created post in school district By Cameron Orr The Northern connector
The BC Liberals’ candidate for the Skeena riding in the last general election has taken the position of District Trades Careers Coordinator for the Coast Mountains School District. The District announced Carol Leclerc’s new position last Thursday, and it takes effect August 1. Leclerc joined the school district in
1990 as the secretary to the director of instruction for special services. In 2003 she became executive assistant of human resources, and has had that job ever since. The role of District Trades Careers Coordinator is a new position in the school district, and according to their press release will “provide district leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive Career Education Program.”

Another power line moves ahead in northwest B.C. The Northern connector
TERRACE - Another significant step to provide power north of here is scheduled to take a step forward with the selection of a contractor. The project involves a 287kV line running 93km north of Bob Quinn on Hwy37 North to Tatogga Lake where a smaller line will then run east to connect to the Red Chris copper and gold mine now being built by Imperial Metals. Imperial has formed a subsidiary for the project which is to be finished next spring. It’s a crucial time period for that’s when the Red Chris mine is to be completed and when BC Hydro’s 344km Northwest Transmission Line, which starts at the Skeena Substation just south of Terrace and which stops at Bob Quinn, is also to be completed and ready to supply power to Red Chris. “Contractor selection for line construction is expected by the end of July,” says Red Chris vice president Steve Robertson. “Local residents, especially Tahltan, will make up a significant component of the workforce, particularly in areas such as right of way clearing, earthworks and environmental supervision. The total workforce number will fluctuate with a peak of about 130.” As vital as the new project is to the Red Chris mine, it is also part of the overall strategy of providing power to the north using the Northwest Transmission Line
as a foundation. At 287kV, the new project, called the Iskut extension, is larger than what’s needed by the Red Chris mine. Under a deal signed with BC Hydro this spring, the line will be sold to the crown corporation for a flat fee of $52 million with the Imperial subsidiary on the hook for any amount above that. It means BC Hydro will be ready to supply power through the extension to other customers, primarily mining companies, should their projects prove viable. BC Hydro officials say the deal is a good one for its fits both the needs of Imperial Metals and of itself and comes with a fixed price. It expects to recover the $52 million it will pay for the extension by charging customers based on the amount of capacity of the line they wish to use. But those customers will also pay for other costs associated with the project, adds BC Hydro. “That comprises the fixed price cost to purchase [the extension] as well as the costs to upgrade the Bob Quinn Substation and build the new Tatogga Substation, and also the costs of the distribution line from Tatogga Lake Substation to Iskut, for a total project cost of approximately $127 million,” said BC Hydro in background material. The extension is also important to BC Hydro for another reason – it moves power closer to
the small community of Iskut which is now dependent upon diesel generators for electricity. That’s because BC Hydro is getting a $130 million federal green infrastructure grant to help defray the costs of the increasingly expensive Northwest Transmission Line on the condition it take Iskut off of diesel power within a year of the transmission line being finished. To date, BC Hydro estimates running a small distribution line north of Tatogga Lake, where the Iskut extension is to stop, to Iskut, a distance of about 16km, will cost $5 million.

PR RCMP bust suspected cocaine and ecstasy dealers By Martina Perry
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Two Prince Rupert men are facing charges after RCMP raided an India Ave. home in June. Although the raid took place nearly a month ago, Prince Rupert RCMP are still reluctant to release many details. Police did say that after the Prince Rupert RCMP Drug Section executed a search warrant on the evening of June 20, an undisclosed amount of cocaine, ecstasy and cash was seized. “As a result of this seizure, illicit drugs were kept from being distrib-
uted within the community of Prince Rupert,” Const. Matt Ericson, “When these drugs are produced in facilities with no quality control or sanitation control there is no way to know what you are ingesting. There is no safe dosage when taking these types of drugs. Even a single use can lead to serious illness or death.” Const. Ericson said RCMP are not releasing what triggered the search warrant, or the exact amount of drugs taken into police custody due to what he called the sensitivity of the investigation. The Prince Rupert RCMP have executed eight search warrants for drugs so far in 2013.

Snowbirds will perform but no community celebration
By Quinn Bender
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Snowbirds have confirmed an Aug. 14 aerobatic performance in Prince Rupert, but spectators shouldn’t expect the day-long festival they enjoyed two years ago. The event this year will feature a 45-minute aeronautic performance only. In 2011 Prince Rupert was treated to a pre-show celebration with live music, vendors and children’s’ activities, costing the city $11,000, but this year budgetary constraints have forced organizers to scale drastically back. “It will be a lean show in terms of the community activities, but the SnowComing Events is complimentary service by The Northern Connector for non-profit groups or organizations who do not charge admission for their events and meetings. Submissions are published on a space available basis. Our deadline is Monday 3 p.m. each week.
Inside
birds show itself will still be amazing,” says Snowbirds Committee chair, Nancy Eidsvik. “We’ve been put on a very limited budget, and the funds were all raised through community support people. We’re very limited to what else we can do.” Spectators can best view the show from the waterfront, in addition to the Rupert Square parking lot and Mariners Park which will both be wheelchair friendly. People are encouraged
“It will be a lean show in terms of community activities...”

to bring radios, as a Snowbirds official will be broadcasting live commentary throughout the show. Financial approval for the Snowbirds performance barely passed a City Council vote last February, as quesNancy Eidsvik members tioned the expense during a time of deep budget cuts. The initial $20,000 request was turned down, but $7,000 eventually approved. The money came from the remaining centen-
nial celebrations fund that was set aside for future community activities. An additional $5,000 was raised though the community. Still, the City of Prince Rupert’s $7,000 contribution has raised eyebrows as there is no guarantee bad weather won’t cancel the performance yet again. Nonetheless Eidsvik is both optimistic for good weather, and says the aerobatic team is anxious to give Prince Rupert a long-awaited show. “When they [Snowbirds] couldn’t do it last time, the guys all said they would come back. They’re keeping their promise, because for a municipality to get them back a second time is really highly unusual.”

GORJANC, ANTON (TONY) Passed away at home with all his family by his side on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the age of 84. Survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Amelia; daughter Daniela (Ian) Macdonald; sons Louie (Sherri), Tony (Joanne); grandchildren Michael, Kenzie, Nicole, Devon, Megan; sister Maria Lenarcic and many, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Alojs and Francisca Gorjanc, his brothers: Joseph, Louie and Ivan and his sister Teresa. Grampa was born on January 6, 1929 in Tolsti Vrh, Slovenia. He served in World War II with the partisans. Shortly after the war, he made his way to Austria and other parts of Europe. He immigrated to Canada in 1955, unable to speak English and with no money, making his way to Toronto, Winnipeg, Northern Alberta and Northern BC. After several stops in Northern BC, he met the love of his life, Amelia, in Prince Rupert, where they raised their three children and where he worked at the Pulp Mill for 32 years. Tony worked extra jobs in home construction and landscaping, where his strength and work ethic was demonstrated and admired. He retired and moved to Kelowna in 1992, where he enjoyed his passions for the outdoors, hunting, gardening, collecting his own firewood and mushrooms, Bocce, Dominoes, Yahtzee, golfing, photography and most of all spending time with his family and friends. Tony cherished all of his grandchildren and they treasured him in return. Grampa was a big man in stature and had great strength. With a simple hand shake he would crush one’s hand and would then shower one with tremendous hospitality, if they could still hold a glass! The family wished to express their gratitude for the compassion, guidance and assistance of the nurses and staff of the Central Okanagan Hospice Palliative Care Program. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250-860-7077.

[fishermen] are not getting the males and they’re only getting female soft shells, you can’t ignore that. In all likelihood, with the handling and the depth, it’s probably going to kill [the females]. The Area A Crab Association, the of-
ficially recognized advisory organization to the DFO for the north coast, spends more than $100,000 per year on surveys scientists use to determine whether the fishery should stay closed due to moulting males. Paul Edwards, president of
the Area “A” Crab Association argues the DFO’s refusal for an early season, based on the presence of soft-shell female crabs, “has no scientific basis.” “To start using moulting female crabs as a trigger to close the fishery is unheard of.
It’s taken us a long time and a lot of science to get us to this point. To see it all thrown out the window, after 15 years, is really depressing… crab fishermen are incredibly proud of the strict monitoring and rigorous science we have pioneered and
funded for the sustainability of our fishery.” According to the Area A Crab Association the north coast dungeness crab industry is worth about $15 million annually in landed value, and employs about 300 people.
“We’re not embarrassed to say an area has to close down because there are conservation concerns.”
