Local brownfield sites get provincial funds for cleanup Submitted

The B.C. Government is investing up to $96,000 to help clean up two brownfield sites in Cranbrook and Elkford, and get them ready for redevelopment. This is part of a $1.5 million brownfield renewal funding pro-

gram, which supports 19 projects in 13 B.C. communities. It is helping to turn former industrial sites into usable property. “Brownfield sites lower property values, provide minimal tax revenues, and impact the growth of communities. They can even pose health risks,” said

Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “This funding and the ensuing redevelopment is a step toward a healthier community, as well as economic spinoffs for the people of Cranbrook and Elkford.” Projects receiving funding: Tembec Inc. in Cranbrook is receiving up

to $94,288 to help redevelop the site of a closed sawmill. The City of Elkford is receiving up to $2,125 to help turn a decommissioned waste water treatment facility until a community recreational area. Since its creation in 2008, the brownfield renewal program has

provided close to $6 million for 101 projects in more than 50 communities. The funding is available to private property owners including local governments, First Nations, non-profit agencies and businesses. The program assists projects in their initial stages by funding site Rocky Mountain

contamination studies and research, to develop options for site restoration and redevelopment. A brownfield is an abandoned or underused industrial or commercial property, often contaminated and with strong redevelopment potential. Renewing brownfield proper-

Grant for Arts Council The Cranbrook & District Arts Council will benefit from a $7,500 Community Gaming Grant from the Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development. Community Gaming Grants help local groups provide important services for B.C. families. Across British Columbia, 42 recipients will share $1,363,010 in the latest rounds of grants. “This organization does so much to improve the community’s access to the arts, and this grant is intended to do the same thing,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “These funds will support the ‘Artrageous Gallery,’ which showcases and celebrates the fine work of our local artists.” Last fiscal year, in 2012/13, our government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services.

All weekend long Madison was treated as one of their own, included in their team cheers, she felt part of the team and was honoured to be part of such a ﬁne group of young women. To the coaches and parents who also made Madison one of their own you all added to the excitement this past

Recently, members of the Cranbrook/ Kimberley RCMP together with community members, laced up and hit the streets to show their support for the Special Olympics Athletes, by participating in the 3rd Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).

There were 61 participants who ran, walked or cycled the 3/5 km route. The run was followed by a BBQ and fun softball game between the local Special Olympics softball team and members of the Cranbrook RCMP. Since 1990, the Law

Enforcement Torch Run in BC has raised more than $3 million to support Special Olympics athletes & programs. Cranbook RCMP would like to thank Cranbrook Canada Safeway for their generosity & continued support.

Dependable and fun, the new Volkswagen Beetle has more room and more pep than before.

Overall: The mid-size 200 remains in a holding pattern for 2013 while it awaits a complete makeover, and possibly even a new name. Drivetrain: A 2.4-litre four-cylinder mated to a four-speed automatic is the choice of frugal shoppers; a six-speed automatic is optional with the 2.4, but standard with the 3.6-litre V6. The 200 remains in the shadow of the Camry, Accord, Altima plus the remainder of the big shooters of the mid-size sedan category. But that hasn’t stopped Chrysler from making it as appealing as possible while work continues behind closed doors on its 2014 Alfa Romeobased replacement. The car’s knot of attributes in-

Drivetrain: Two gasoline engines, one diesel powerplant and three transmissions offer plenty of choice for Beetle buyers. The hatchback is about to be joined by a Beetle Convertible that will show up as a mid-2013 or early 2014 model. The Beetle is wider and longer than the old New Beetle, which means more interior room for all. The contemporary cabin features easy-to-read dials and massive air vents that flank a carbon-fibre-look dashboard. On up-level models a trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pressure and clock/ stopwatch) seem inspired

Where it loses steam is in fuel economy, which is nowhere near that of its peers. Underneath, the suspension offers reasonable ride quality and outside noise abatement (acoustic laminated front and side glass is part of the package). Inside, you’ll ﬁnd an attractive instrument panel and supportive seats. There are also plenty of what Chrysler calls “soft-touch” features, such as the armrests. While the base powerplant is a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, buyers can select the 283-horsepower “Pentastar” 3.6-litre

V6. The four-cylinder is coupled to the price-leader model’s four-speed automatic transmission, or you can specify a six-speed automatic that helps improve overall mileage. The latter is your only choice when it comes to the 3.6. The 200 has to cover a broad spectrum of buyers and is therefore available in LX, Touring, Limited and 200 S trim levels. The latter jumps off at the Limited’s trim level and adds 18-inch wheels, better interior appointments and stereo, and, of course, the V6.

The TDI offers a very real alternative to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial purchase cost are factored in. The top-rung and most performance-focused Beetle gets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s also the only model to include a standard rear spoiler. A five-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed automatic are offered on fivecylinder Beetles, while a sixspeed manual or an available six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (DSG) can be had on either the TDI or turbo 2.0-litre gasoline editions. Entry-level

Beetles showcase numerous power-operated accessories plus air conditioning, cloth-covered seats and an eight-speaker stereo. Opting for the automatic transmission adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free cellular communications. Among the variety of options is a panoramic sunroof, 400-watt Fender-brand audio package with ambient lighting, keyless entry with pushbutton start, extra-bright bi-xenon (high- and low-beam) headlights and a navigation system with 12.5-centimetre touch screen. The Convertible’s power-controlled softtop features an Automatic Rollover Safety Support System that instantly deploys twin roll bars from behind the back seat, if needed.

OBITUARY Donald Frank Mogielka 1941 - 2013 It is with heavy hearts that our family tells the community that we have lost a very kind, loyal friendly man. Don Mogielka passed away at 72 years of age on Thursday, July 11, 2013 after suffering a heart attack in Birch Bay, Washington. Don was on holidays enjoying his retirement years with his lovely wife Marje Bridgman-Mogielka. Together they had more travels and plans than years to live. Don was born on February 20, 1941 in Fernie, British Columbia and worked hard all his life. In retirement he redirected that hard work into hard play. He was living life the way everyone should, enjoying friends, family, travel and the Love of his new wife. Don is survived by his wife Marjorie Bridgeman-Mogielka, daughters Cathy (Jerry) Mogielka and Kayla (John) Macaulay, sons Dale (Marianne) Mogielka and Robert (Sheri) Mogielka, grandchildren Mike and Dawn Macaulay, Devon Gilchrist, Braden and Noah Samsonoff, step-son Troy Bridgman, step-daughters Nicole Bilton and Leah Belik, and two sisters Marlene Lalonde and Joanne Schiebout. He was predeceased by his first wife Betty (nee Schmaltz), father Joe Mogielka and mother Beatrice Mogielka (nee Sweet). There will be a Celebration Of Don's Life on July 28, 2013 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at 2025 - Kokanee Drive North. Please come and bring your stories of "Big Don" to share with his family and friends. HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities. Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently. Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in. Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats. Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the HAFI program may be able to help. Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.
