Cup riot charges sought against Ridge hockey fighter Daniel scott Amesbury, 22, faces eight counts By Michael Hall, staff reporter

A former junior hockey player from Maple Ridge is the latest person charged in connection with the 2010 Stanley Cup riot. Crown laid charges last Wednesday Amesbury against Daniel Scott Amesbury, born Nov. 17, 1990. He’s the 14th suspect to be charged out of 15 identified by police in the brutal swarming attack on Good Samaritan Robert Mackay, who tried to keep looters from breaking into The Bay during the riot.

The security requirements are comparable to what’s expected at a financial institution.

The District of Maple Ridge doesn’t yet have a medical marijuana grow-op bylaw, but it’s already hearing from an applicant who wants to set up a large-scale shop. John Moonen, a lobbyist for a company called Agrima Botanicals, was at council’s committee of the

whole on Monday. Agrima is based in New Westminster, but already has a comparatively small-scale medicinal marijuana operation on farmland in Maple Ridge, growing for a limited number of patients under the current Health Canada system. The federal Health Ministry announced in January that it will phase out individual licences, which allow medical marijuana users to grow pot in their own homes. Instead, all medical pot will be grown and distributed by highly regulated and secure commercial

operators. The present system has been problematic, in that neither municipalities nor police even know where the legal grow-ops are, and local officials have claimed the loosely regulated operations are targets for criminal grow rips, and are fire hazards. The new system will come into effect in April 2014, and Moonen said Agrima wants to hit the ground running with a new licence under the incoming regulatory regime. Moonen has not heard that there will be limits on the number of li-

cences, but, in his opinion, Ottawa is making the new requirements so stringent that few operators will have the financial wherewithal and expertise to meet them. For example, the new grow ops must have zero pollen or odour emissions. He said Agrima has a three-tiered air purification system with charcoal filtering to meet this requirement. Moonen added the security requirements are comparable to what would be expected at a financial institution or “diamond cutting operation.” see Bylaw, p5

Pitt residents peeved about new park Fear proposed trails would cause more drainage issues by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

A proposal to build a 35-hectare park at the south end of Pitt Meadows is already meeting stiff opposition from nearby residents who believe the city is using green space as a guise to hide drainage problems. Manager of parks Bruce McLeod presented a preliminary proposal to council last week, detailing a plan to extend an existing community garden as well as enhance wetland and wildlife habitat on the property located at Bonson Road and Airport Way. McLeod showed a sketch with an undulating water course which would eventually connect with the Katzie Slough. Ken Joyner, who lives nearby, isn’t enthused by the scenic vistas and water features. “This is a cover-up for mismanagement of drainage in the area,” he said following a meeting July 16. Joyner points to the soggy backyards behind homes on Wildwood Crescent and a broken culvert under Airport Way that has yet to be fixed. He bristles at another “aqua” area built in 2011 to alleviate drainage problems and add fish habitat, which is adjacent to the proposed park that features a 260-metre-long (853 feet) channel, which connects to Katzie Slough. He claims that water feature is a haven for mosquitoes and has done little to attract wildlife or birds. “The problem with the new park is they are going to create two more stagnant water ponds. They are go-

Contributed

The City of Pitt Meadows is mulling a plan to create a 35-hectare park near Bonson Road and Airport Way. ing to breed mosquitos. They are going to kill off the wildlife that’s already there,” he says. Joyner rather have the area, currently zoned agricultural and green space, left as is. “The people are enjoying it now. It’s wonderful,” he added. “To destroy over 33 [hectares] is the wrong thing to do.” The city and parks department assure residents that the park is only at the proposal stage and that nothing is set in stone. Mayor Deb Walters said right now

is a good opportunity to explore ideas for the area. The community garden is already pegged for expansion sometime in 2015. “We are sensitive about the drainage,” she added, acknowledging the issues voiced by several residents of the surrounding neighbourhood. “Basically, it’s a brainstorming. There is nothing on paper. It’s just what would the community like to see.” The city intends to form a design group comprised of residents, and once plans are drawn up, they will be

shared with the public. No money has been set aside for the project and the parks department did not respond to a query about the price of it. There may be federal or provincial grants that the city can apply for. Mike Stark, a resident who continues to lobby city hall to fix drainage issues along Wildwood Crescent, expressed his concern about the park during a televised council meeting July 16. Stark does not want the proposed park to have paved areas or com-

pressed asphalt trails, similar to a bike and walking path off Wildwood Crescent built behind his home. He and his neighbours believe the paved trail is trapping water behind their homes, although a city suggested, the flooding was most likely being caused by “natural ponding” due to an undulating or rolling terrain. “Is it already a done deal that there is going to be a park there?, Stark asked council, adding he’d prefer the area to remain natural. “Forgive me if I get a little nervous when people mention trails.”

City to investigate building indoor pool, again City staff recommend hiring consultant to review plans by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

Pitt Meadows will consider hiring a consultant to investigate whether the city should proceed with building an indoor pool. A staff report to council recommends the city hire Brian Johnson of Professional Environmental Recreation Consultants Ltd. for $2,000 to review whether the city actually needs an indoor pool and what type of facility would best serve the city. The last study that investigated an indoor pool was done in 2004, by PERC. In a report to council, director of recre-

ation Wendy McCormick said planning reports over the past eight years have been consistent in indicating significant community interest in an indoor pool. “The 2004 PERC report identified that there is a defined need for an aquatic facility and this was repeated in the 2010 Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan for Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge,” said McCormick. Johnson has many years of experience and expertise in planning aquatic facilities. He recently worked with Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam to analyze outdoor aquatic infrastructure and the Township of Langley to assess the needs for an indoor aquatic facility in Aldergrove. The city’s long-term capital plan anticipates constructing an indoor pool by 2017. With the clock ticking, Mayor Deb Walters said it makes sense to investigate whether that plan should remain on the

books or be pushed further into the future. “I would like to see a business case on it,” she added. “My opinion is it would be nice to have, but is it a necessity? We have pump stations that need replacing and infrastructure we have to be concerned about. It’s kind of like your own budget at home. Do you go on the trip or replace the fridge that’s dying? You have to weigh out Walters the importance of it.” As part of the review, staff recommend the consultant investigate what type of pool should be built, current trends in other municipalities and recommend how the city should proceed. “Do we even have the population to support it? Maybe that’s why it’s a good idea to bring in a consultant to make a business

case and figure out if it’s feasible,” said Walters. “If we don’t have a population to support it, it doesn’t make sense to go ahead.” Council was set to discuss hiring a consultant at a committee meeting Tuesday but won’t make a final decision until its next regular meeting. Walters said the city will need support from the federal or provincial government or another third party to build the pool. “We have always said we can’t build it unless we have third party funding. It’s a project we just can’t afford to take on.” The costs of construction will be paid for by Pitt Meadows but Maple Ridge will share operating costs, under its joint service agreement, once the pool is built.

‘Too early’ for cause in drowning death Get to know area before swimming: Lifesaving Society by Monisha M ar t ins staff reporter

The B.C. Coroner’s Services continues to investigate the death of a young man who drowned while swimming in Alouette Lake last week. The 21-year-old from Port Coquitlam and his friends were in a public swimming area in Golden Ears Provincial Park, where he disappeared under the water around 3:40 p.m. Thursday. He was pulled from the lake by friends and brought to shore. Nurses on the beach administered CPR before emergency personnel arrived, but attempts to resuscitate him failed. “It is too early to say what the cause was,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop, with Ridge Meadows RCMP, who are investigating his death along with the coroner’s service. “It does not appear there is any indication of foul play.” The man has been identified as Jacob RutzenGibbs. He is described in his obituary as a devout Canucks fan, who loved the outdoors, road hockey, the Grouse Grind and Vanilla Coke. Services for RutzenGibbs will be held Wednesday, July 24 at 10

Rescuers tried to revive the young man. a.m. at Burquitlam Funeral Home, 625 North Road, Coquitlam, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canuck Place, in his memory. His death comes on the eve of National Drowning Prevention Week, which takes place annually from July 20-27. The Lifesaving Society of B.C. and Yukon says 2013 is shaping up to be one of the worst years in recent memory for accidental drownings. As of Tuesday, there have already been 44 drowning deaths in 2013, compared to 30 at this time last year. One factor for the increase in accidental drownings this year is the hot weather, said Wendy Schultenkamper, education director of the Lifesaving Society of B.C.

think of it,” she adds. “We get to the lake and beeline it to the water without ever thinking what’s underneath water.” A review of drowning deaths over the past five years by the B.C. Coroner’s Service shows that many victims are unfamiliar with the waters involved and, therefore, don’t see the risk or underestimate it. Those risks can include such things as unexpected currents, steep and sudden drop offs, or unusually high water levels because of heavy rains or late spring runoff. In a fast-flowing river, six inches of water can sweep a person downstream and two feet can carry away most vehicles. The Coroners Service also stresses that alcohol and water-based activities don’t go together, any more than drinking and driving do. The review showed that fully 40 per cent of the victims were impaired by alcohol or drugs.

and Yukon. Metro Vancouver hasn’t seen a drop of rain for 25 days and forecasts predict the dry spell could break all-time monthly records. Research also shows that 80 per cent of drowning victims are male, with a good portion of them being in the 18 to 24 age group. “Part of that reason is young males tend to be bigger risk-takers,” Schultenkamper said. The Lifesaving Society encourages people to take swimming courses and lifesaving courses. Schultenkamper also recommends people get to know the area before going in the water. “How deep is it? Is there a drop off? Is there an underwater current? A lot of time we don’t

• Always wear a properly fitting personal floatation device when engaged in boating or tubing activities. Children, non-swimmers and weak swimmers should also wear a PFD when wading or playing in the water at a river or lakeside. • Be aware of the area where you are planning your activities. Check the weather forecast before heading out, and also do a visual inspection of the area. • Warn visitors about steep drop-offs, rapids and any other hazards. • Alcohol and water-related activities do not mix. Alcohol impairs co-ordination and judgment, substantially adding to the risk inherent in swimming or boating. • Always supervise children anywhere near water.

He would not elaborate as to precisely what security measures will be required. Nor would Moonen say where the existing facility is, or even whether any of the principles involved are from Maple Ridge. “There are a lot of security concerns, and that has to be paramount.” Agrima has already begun talking with neighbours of the proposed medical marijuana facility. He declined to characterize their reaction. “That’s between us and the neighbours.” Council will deal with Agrima’s proposal under its new medi-

cal marijuana zoning bylaw. An earlier bylaw that had been given two readings by council has been rescinded, and the new bylaw was slated to get first and second readings at last night’s regular council meeting. The debate as to whether these operations should be located on industrial or agricultural land has been settled. A resolution passed in May by the Lower Mainland Local Government Association (LMLGA) urged the Union of B.C. Municipalities to lobby for the industrial-only land restriction. However, Maple

Ridge’s view that these large-scale growing operations should be located on farmland has been backed up by the Agricultural Land Commission, which has decided growing pot is a bona-fide agricultural use. That means no municipality can prohibit marijuana grow ops on farmland.

and exterior lot lines, 30m from wells and streams, 30m from residences, a separation of 200m from schools and a minimum of 1 km separation from other commercial medical marijuana facilities. Planner Diana Hall said the district is putting the new bylaw forward knowing

it may be challenged, and changes may be necessary to amend or clarify it. However, she said the district wants to have some controls in place. The topic was first raised with the question of whether the district could ban the facilities outright. Coun. Corisa Bell asked what other mu-

nicipalities are going ahead with a medical marijuana bylaw. Hall said the district has been in touch with neighbouring cities, and “this is something they’re all taking on.” Council’s bylaw would go to the ALC for comment, then be offered for public input prior to being passed.

It also means these “farmers” could enjoy a big tax break. Coun. Mike Morden pointed out that pot growers will now be able to apply for farm tax status, which is a far lower tax rate than industrial property owners pay. The district’s bylaw includes setbacks of 60 metres from front

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Anything but smart They’re called smartphones, but the way some people use them is anything but smart – giving us all legitimate cause for concern about public safety. A new poll that shows that 64 per cent of adults in B.C. own a smartphone also reveals, more disturbingly, that about 18 per cent of those who do consider themselves “strongly addicted to the device.” Predictably, the majority who placed themselves in that particular category describe their addiction as ‘manageable.’ It’s a rare addict, after all, who acknowledges his or her addiction – whatever it is – is galloping out of control. That all changes, of course, when the addict is faced with incontrovertible evidence – usually some severe crisis or tragedy – that calls for an immediate change in behaviour. The question is, should we, as a society, be expected to pay the price of such a crisis or tragedy? Particularly when it’s something like an accident caused by driving without due care and attention? Smartphones offer entertainment and information through a multitude of apps, and they have very practical uses in terms of communication, particularly in emergencies, that have, so far, merely scratched the surface of their potential. But it’s no news they also function as a distraction. According to the recent poll, those who describe themselves as addicted estimate they spend an average of 2.5 of their waking hours staring at their diminutive keypads and screens. If that 2.5 hours were spent in one block of time, it might be a different matter – but it’s spread throughout the day, usually while the users are multi-tasking in some way. We should all be more aware of the imminent dangers such devices present – and to make sure that we are actually controlling them – and not the other way around. The human animal is, inevitably, flawed – and there is always the temptation to make just one short call, check that one detail, complete that half-finished text or glance at that incoming message. A quick look, a few more words, just this once – who could it hurt? The answer is not only ourselves, but others, as well. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Green MLA on coal, controversy After climate scientist-turned-Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver had a taste of debate in the B.C. legislature, I asked him for his impressions on that and other issues. Excerpts from that discussion: TF: You did a study comparing burning B.C. Views all the world’s coal Tom Fletcher reserves and all oil reserves, showing how big coal really is. The federal government says that when you add up what’s actually being used in North America, carbon emissions from coal are about 30 times more than from oil. Now we have a symbolic coal export ban in Vancouver, which doesn’t apply to Port Moody or Point Roberts or Prince Rupert. Do you think there’s any significance to this? AW: There is no question that the biggest issue around is coal, because coal use is on the rise world-wide. Not in the United States, because they’re converting [power production] to natural gas. This is why American producers are saying, ‘let’s ship it to Asia.’ California says no, Oregon says no, Washington says no. Vancouver says no, British Columbia, not sure. It’s pushing us to start thinking about what I think is going to be the greatest industrial revolution the world has ever seen, which is transformation of energy systems away from our combustion ap-

proach, which is essentially what we’ve been doing since we were in caves. We’ve gone from burning wood to now fossil wood, and fossil plants and fossil algae, to a much more modern era of production of energy through natural means – solar, wind, geothermal etc. TF: Liquified natural gas. The NDP says they are absolutely in favour of that now. AW: I have questioned the economics of it from day one. There’s a market differential that exists now. There’s that small window because Japan is moving from nuclear to natural gas. But we’re way behind everyone else. TF: Thirty years ago, Japan played Australia and B.C. off for metallurgical coal. Those northeast B.C. coal mines are back up and running again, but you’re seeing a similar thing here? AW: Yes. And if we start shipping natural gas to Asia … the Asian price comes down, the North American price goes up. British Columbians haven’t been told that. TF: How has the legislature session been for you? AW: I sit there and watch the two parties. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. And I hope more British Columbians watch this, because this needs to change. And I think it can change. TF: The NDP opposition decides when you and Delta South Independent Vicki Huntington get your occasional moments in question period? AW: Yes, and if I’ve asked it’s been no problem. TF: Grudgingly no doubt. If the NDP

had [its] way, the closest Green Party member would be in Holland. AW: [Laughs] Yes. Certainly not in North America. There’s this sense of entitlement within the NDP to the ‘green’ vote. And I sense that the B.C. Liberals very much like our existence, as being not NDP. The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger. It’s kids going to school, talking about conservation, and going home to talk to their parents. That’s where our votes are coming from.

“The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger.” TF: Are you going to be found standing in front of a coal train any time soon? AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience. Many other ways to keep fit

Conspiracy on wireless radiation?

Editor, The News: Re: Happy and healthy on my bike (Letters, July 17). Tracey Eide, you may have been biking all of two years to lose weight and get fit, but my family has been biking in this community since 1979. I have two avid mountain bikers in the family, and grandkids who keep fit by playing soccer, dancing, doing gymnastics and swimming. My husband cycles regularly in the community and comments on the lack of cyclists on Abernethy Way.

Editor, The News: Re: Fee proposed for smart meters (The News, July 17). Is it just me, or does the article cleverly use code words to imply that citizens who question the safety of wireless are ‘deniers’ who threaten their fellow citizens with extra costs, and all because of their misguided fear of radiation, which the article states has been brushed aside by B.C.’s medical health officer? Dr. Perry Kendall, has been written directly by international experts, warning him of the dangers of wireless radiation and imploring him to enact the precautionary principle. He ignored them. Perhaps it is time The News, which dedicated 40 per cent of that page to wireless advertising, overcame its small-minded biases and does an honest article on the well known dangers of wireless radiation. Ron McNutt Maple Ridge

Weeds, though, are plentiful. We are spending a lot of money on a biking network for a limited number of people, mostly because jobs and family requirements restrict the time parents have available to them. Not everyone has the ability, nor the interest in riding a bike for shopping or leisure. There are many other ways of keeping fit. Of course, I am not on Abernethy Way 24/7. I am too busy volunteering in my community with a wonderful group of seniors.

I am too busy working out at the gym with another wonderful group of seniors, all in their 60s, 70s and 80s, doing yoga, Pilates, aerobics and Zumba. I am too busy hiking the local mountain trails, walking the dikes and, yes, my little cycling trips, too. It is not seniors whose butts were glued to the Lazyboy. Most were too busy working and paying taxes. Seniors spend countless hours volunteering in their communities and if they have medical needs, it’s not be-

‘Councillor should work within the system’ Editor, The News: Re: Citizen seeks unedited video (The News, July 19). Okay, enough already. For weeks now I’ve read with interest, and occasional amusement, about this mystery video and the ongoing dispute between a particular councilor and the administration at our municipal hall. The letters and stories finally seemed to abate, then, there it was again – front page. The entire debacle has taken on a life of its own, pitting

one lonely council member against the rest of council, and the entire district – lawyers and all. Citizens are appalled at her treatment, past council candidates have rushed to her defense, and, yet, no one really gets what happened in the first place. There was a meeting, the councilor asked questions, she didn’t get answers, apparently a senior administrator made a comment to her at some point, a comment that upset her, and subsequently, she asked for his suspension. Now, any reasonable person who

has ever been on a committee, involved in anything remotely official or political, or been responsible for tens of millions of taxpayers’ dollars, would recognize this as a game changer. Comments made to an elected official by a paid official at a meeting or soon after that cause the elected official to demand a suspension is the kind of thing that makes all the lawyers on the city’s payroll shudder and shuffle and loosen their ties. Come on, people, this became a serious situation the moment things were said and

cause they were lazy, or obese or drug addicted, like some of our young people today. Two wars and many deprivations contributed to health problems many seniors face and we cannot alter that fact. Enjoy your biking, but don’t presume to judge others by your own past bad habits. We all have to make our own way in this world and that includes deciding how we keep fit. I will continue with all of my many activities, even my little bit of riding. Joan Carr Maple Ridge

demands were made, and, only those directly affected should be involved. Our mayor made it clear in his comments a couple of weeks ago, this is an internal matter, must be dealt with properly and with due diligence, and that’s that, period. The councilor involved is irresponsible in taking her case to the streets so quickly. Her next action should have been to consult a lawyer, follow procedure internally, and work within the system. If whatever was said to her is truly actionable, then she has a legal case to work with. We, the voting public, as she is obviously aware, have no need or right to access this information at this time. Morgan Jensen Maple Ridge

Amesbury is charged with assault, participating in a riot, disguising his face to commit an offence, break and enter, and four counts of mischief. Amesbury is a former member of the Ridge Meadows Flames junior B hockey team. During the 200910 season, he had 368 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Flames. The following season, in 37 games with the Abbotsford Pilots, he had 413 penalty minutes – a Pacific Junior Hockey

League record. He was the league’s most penalized player both years and can be found online in numerous hockey fighting videos. Amesbury, listed at 6’1’’ and pounds, played 31 games last season with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, recording 113 penalty minutes and 15 fighting majors. “He did play with us last season,” said Rob Loeber, broadcast and media relations with Tulsa. “We had no idea about any involvement

with the riots.” Loeber was not sure if Amesbury would be returning to the Oilers this coming season. Amesbury also played two games with Columbus, Georgia in the Southern Professional Hockey League last season, recording 21 penalty minutes. Amesbury is among five men from Maple Ridge who were implicated in the riot. Vancouver Police are seeking charges against another 27 suspected rioters. It’s the final bulk batch of charges VPD

say they’re requesting related to the night of mayhem and violence more than two years ago in downtown Vancouver. VPD Supt. Dean Robinson said many charged and convicted rioters continue to ignore court-ordered conditions. Random checks by investigators have found 28 in breach of conditions who have since been charged. Thus far, police have sought a total of 1,204 charges against 352 rioters.

In 2½ Hours!

Even if you’re 40 or 80 yrs old, a total beginner or a frustrated player. You’ll be playing your favourite songs with both hands (and sounding really good) with my powerful & easy system! “It is so nice to be able to find a piano at a friend’s house and be able to sit down and play rich full sounding popular songs without any sheet music. Thank you for finally giving me the gift of music!”----- Gord Hopkins, age 61, Ottawa Ontario

Play Beautiful Music Without YEARS of Expensive & Frustrating Lessons At last, your AGE doesn't matter (most of my students are 40 to 80; average age 55!) You can learn how to play REAL music on the piano or keyboards fast and easy with virtually NO FRUSTRATION. Sounds too good to be true? Thousands upon thousands of adults all over North America have already discovered the 2½ hours you invest in this amazing workshop will start your lifetime of playing pleasure!

Play Hundreds of Songs Right Away! Like most piano wannabes, I endured years of boring and mind-numbing “traditional” lessons. Not fun! Later I also learned how to play chords. Not only did I finally begin enjoying the piano, I discovered you could

do lots of fun things like playing in parties or jamming with friends. Playing in church for example (where you had to learn new songs often) became easy! You see, unlike the traditional method where you worked on ONE music piece for a long time, with chords, you could play dozens of tunes right away!

Finally a Method for Adults…Even Older Adults, That Absolutely Works! This is not the same as other chord methods you may have tried in the past. Those methods still have you memorizing chords note-for-note and then work on learning how to play them. I discovered and developed rich sounding chord patterns that even total beginners can play right away with both hands. You'll be playing all your favourite songs before you know it! very year Pitt Meadow Museum relies on summer students and youth volunteers to open our two sites five days a week and to run our summer programs and collections projects. This year we have two great students, both graduates of Pitt Meadows secondary in 2011. Nikki McLaren is this year’s Government of Canada, HRSDC employee at the museum. Nikki is currently a student at Capilano University and is studying studio art. She is also an active member of Girl Guides of Canada and has been a youth volunteer at the Muse for many years. In her free time, Nikki enjoys sewing, designing T-shirts, and playing the banjo. This summer she is the organizer of the 2013 Heritage Thursdays for Children program and is excited to welcome kids of the community to join her Thursday afternoons, 1-3 p.m., when we will be exploring “Pastimes from the Past”. Some highlights include candle dipping, stepping stone mosaics and fashionable bow

Nikki is also involved in much of the daily workings of the General Store site, opening the museum from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and always has a craft or hands-on activity waiting for you and your family to come and try out. She invites you to stop by some time this summer and get historical. Donated by Hans and Freida Hoffmann in 1998, the Hoffmann shop is filled with great reminders of a bustling business that once played an integral role in the agricultural development of Greater Vancouver. Here you can see countless items used by Hans himself or check out the forge and gigantic lathe. Stop by the shop this summer and you will find our summer museum technician, Nick Pochailo, manning the post. documentation process of Hoffmann site artifacts such as drill bits, engine cranks and various hand tools. Nick also opens the shop to the public Wednesday to Sunday, 1-4 p.m. and is the guy to talk to about our 100th year anniversary Memory Band project, which is currently in progress at the site. Busy as he is, Nick is always available to tour you through the site. Also at the museum, the countdown to 100 continues. Check in on Aug. 28 to find out what our first council was concerned about accomplishing way back in the spring of 1914, and don’t forget to drop by to pick up or drop off a Memory Band nomination form. – Leslie Norman is curator at Pitt Meadows Museum.

Signs for True North Pitt Meadows is going ahead with a new roadside signage program to make easier for locals and tourists to find agriculture-related destinations. The city has launched The True North Fraser signage program, a regional project partnering with Maple Ridge and Mission. The true North Fraser brand was supported by a $14,175 grant provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development through its Invest Canada – Community Initiatives program and the Maple Ridge Agriculture Advisory Committee. The grant was matched by Pitt Meadows. “This program will attract people to our community ... supports and grows our local economy and enriches our community,” Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said. Walters said the cooperation between the city’s economic development office and Maple Ridge and Mission will help reiterate that farming is an important economic driver in the area and that all three communities are open for business. Don MacDonald, a Pitt Meadow’s blueberry grower, was quick to get on board, being one of the first local farmers to order a sign. “People love to come out, visit the farm, meet the farmer, and pick some berries,” said MacDonald. “It’s great to share our vibrant farming industry with others and now it will be even easier for visitors to find us.” There are two sign options for farmers. Costs are $105 for a one-sided sign. An additional sign is $30. Two-sided signs are $140, with a second sign costing $65. Farmers participating in the program have to remove the signs at the end of the season and a sign permit. Municipal signs will be installed in several key intersections in Pitt Meadows and will include the True North Fraser logo and a directional arrow. Agriculture-related businesses can apply to have up to two True North Fraser signs installed per property. Lori Graham, coordinator of the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation, said the new road sign program will also raise public awareness of the Invest North Fraser region’s high quality agricultural products and the farmers, growers and processors behind them. Farmers, growers, and processors in Pitt Meadows who are interested in the program can call 604-4609481 or email EDinfo@thinkpittmeadows.ca or visit www.thinkpittmeadows.ca. • In Maple Ridge they can call 604-467-7319 and in Mission call 604-820-3789.

Green Fighter is maintaining a healthy lifestyle Contest reminded Paige Charron how much she likes fitness by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

“H

ow’s the Zumba going, Paige?” a stranger asks. It’s been that way since Paige Charron’s public participation in the Kin’s Green Fighter contest. Her pictures and stories in the paper and online were seen by a lot of people, and her fearless and funny selfassessments in her blogging made Charron known around town. A month after the 13week competition, Charron is still living healthy, and is optimistic that she has made lasting lifestyle changes. “I think I will stick with it. It [the competition] has reminded me how much I love exercising and being able to move.” The self-styled “change

A month later, the weight is still off. She feels better in the mornings, and has much more energy throughout the day. She wants to be active, even while working at the Hospice Society Thrift Store. “I help everyone lift their couches – I want to be moving.” A 3.4 per cent increase in bone density was another significant gain, and she was advised that continued resistance training will keep her fracture free as she ages. As for Zumba, the dance fitness craze, a weekly session has stayed part of her new healthy lifestyle. “I love it.” The Kin’s Green Fighters challenge was won by Vancouver’s Kristen Macgregor, who lost 26 pounds and increased her bone density. She won a cruise for two, a year’s worth of produce from Kin’s and three months at the Live Well exercise clinic. Between the 13 contestants, they raised $7,600 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

transition is simply that half of her dinner plate is now vegetables. Salads with blueberries and nuts and now a staple, while toast, pasta and white flour are no longer on the menu. “It has been easy to cut out white flour,” she said. “I just eat more protein.” Charron can’t resist a burger if she’s at the Billy Miner Pub, but when 90 per cent of what she’s consuming is healthy, she feels she can afford it. She is replacing the spin classes with riding her bike to and from work. Last weekend she went hiking at Elk Mountain in Chilliwack, and this weekend it will be Manning Park. She has joined the dragon boating team with the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club. “I’m back to where I was in my early 30s, when I wanted to exercise all the time.” Through the competition she lost 17 pounds, including a pound of muscle, despite some grueling resistance training.

or Bob D’Eith, a frustrating foray into the political arena wasn’t without its rewards.

After failing in his bid to land the NDP nomination for the Maple Ridge-Mission riding, D’Eith found he needed a place to release his energies. For the past 22 years, he has worked as an entertainment lawyer in Vancouver, helping artists navigate the tricky waters of the music industry. As well, he has spent the past 12 years as executive director of Music B.C., a trade organization aimed at nurturing musicians and the music industry throughout the province. But before his professional career took shape, he was a musician. A classically trained pianist with a love of jazz, D’Eith’s musical career included seven albums that featured a Juno nomination and a pair of Western Canadian Music Awards. But his work on the business side of the industry had consumed him. The loss on the

political front left D’Eith needing to bring his career back to the middle. “For me, personally, I was missing that other side of my life,” explains D’Eith, who set to work on his first album in six years with musical partner Paul Schmidt under their band name Mythos. “I just sort of happened organically. I just got into this sort of manic, creative frenzy and just created the album. My balance had been tipped so far to the one side. I originally got in to the industry because I am a musician. But recently it had gotten to the point where all I was doing was the business side of the industry, so it was fantastic to be able to reconnect with that side of my life.” Journey, also the title track from the album, was the first step in bringing harmony back into his life. But its completion didn’t drain D’Eith’s pent-up frustrations. So along with using his two-hour commute time on the West Coast Express to help write the music for his album, he set down to pen his first ebook, entitled A Career in Music: The Other 12Step Program. His decision to publish a book was a way to share his two-plus decades navigating the complicated and ever-changing world of the music industry. “Because I am a musician, a lawyer, and I’m

involved in B.C. Music and its education component, it gave me this more broad view of the industry. So the book is very much an accumulation of knowledge over the last 22 years.” he noted. In those two-plus decades, D’Eith has seen a number of aspiring artists stumble along the way. Whether it’s through their lack of understanding the business side of the industry or a good singer with bad recording sessions, potential careers can be dashed if an artist can’t put the whole package together. “Getting into the business side is a huge learning curve, especially for someone who has devoted so much of their energy on the craft of being a musician. Now, all of a sudden, you have to be an entrepreneur. How do you do that? “It’s hard work. That’s the main thing. It’s treating your music career as a day job. It’s getting up and doing the hard work every day. And that’s a hard thing for artists.” D’Eith said now more than ever, an artist must be able to use social media to engage their audience. He said you show him any successful musician and he will show you a successful business person. “It’s a do-it-yourself world,” he emphasized.

But as important as social media is, D’Eith said live performance is more important than ever. He said it wasn’t that long ago that a strong music video was all that was needed to launch a music career. And while that similar model has shifted to YouTube, if you don’t have the live performance to back it up, you will ultimately fail. He said you may achieve your 15 minutes of Internet fame, but in order to stay in the public eye, you have to be able to perform. He points to an artist like Mission’s Carly Rae Jepsen, who he said was able to take her “luck” from being discovered on the web and back it up with her talent as a live performer. But he points out that Jepsen is the exception, not the rule. Whether it’s in the studio or through the written word, D’Eith continues to create with the future in mind, added with a sprinkle of helpful advice. “It’s fantastic to be able to create again.”

Adanacs catch Burrards by Neil Corbet t staff reporter

Unable to hold onto a big lead, the Maple Ridge Burrards and their fans watched their playoff hopes slip away on Sunday night at Planet Ice. The Burrards were leading the Coquitlam Adanacs 9-5 heading into the third period, but lost 12-9. The Adanacs scored 1:20 into the period. Then gave up a breakaway for another goal five minutes in. It was already 9-8 after six minutes of play, and then the Adanacs tied it 9-9 by scooping up a rebound on a long shot and depositing it behind goaltender Chris Levis, who appeared to be completely at their mercy. He was credited with only 21 saves on 33 shots, and appeared injured at one time. Fans waited for a Burrard rally, but it never happened. The Coquitlam netminder Adam Shute was perfect for the period. With the

score 10-9 Adanacs, the rebound off an Aaron Pascas shot was bouncing at his feet, but Shute was lucky enough to pin the ball under him as he dropped to the floor. He made 33 saves on 42 shots, and was the game’s second star. With 2:54 left the Burrards went on the power play, but the Adanacs did a good job of stealing possession time, and then scored a shorthanded goal. Both Ben McIntosh and Curtis Dickson both had two goals and three assists in the loss, and Jarrett Davis had two goals and four points. Adanacs Brett Hickey and Matt Dinsdale both had hat tricks in the third period to upset the Burrards. Players and many in the organization appeared stunned by the collapse, which was a microcosm of the last half of the Burrards season. See Burrards, p22

Fighters from the Maple Ridge Boxing Club punched their weight at the First Canadian Golden Glove Championship, which west held in Cornwall, Ont. last week. Siblings Sara and Sasan Haghighat-Joo each brought back gold medals. Connor Rankin lost a split decision 2-1, in a controversial judgement that some watchers said should have gone his way. Sara also has won a scholarship for her first year of tuition at UBC. Now the club’s “Triple Threat” will train for the Canadian National Championships, which are being held in Regina, Saskatchewan in October.

Ladd invited to Olympic camp With the announcement that NHL players would be part of Winter Olympic hockey in Sochi came the release of all the players Team Canada would be inviting to tryouts. It is a sign of how far Maple Ridge’s Andrew Ladd has come, that he is included in the camp. The Winnipeg Jets captain was known early in his career as a hard-nosed player, but has scored at close to a 30-goal per season pace for three seasons.

that was never held out of double-digit scoring. Then came a mid-season scuffle, with three wins and four losses, and finally a complete collapse of five straight losses, and a now a record of 7-10. The Adanacs leapfrogged into the fourth and final playoff spot with Sunday’s victory in Maple Ridge, holding down a record of 7-8-1. Team president Lance Andre was clearly stunned after Sunday’s loss. Pulling his head off the plexiglass, he explained that his team could still climb into the fourth and final playoff spot, but they would need to win their last game, and have the Adanacs lose their last two. “We lost four straight games by one goal,” he pointed out. “What can you do.” The Burrards close out the regular season on Saturday in Nanaimo.
