The Extreme Lawnmower Races on the Aldergrove Athletic park BMX track proved to be a big attraction for fairgoers at Aldergrove Fair Days this year.

101st Fair attracts record crowds By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Brilliant, sunny weather brought out families by the droves for a record-breaking 101st edition of the annual Aldergrove Fair on the weekend. Fair spokesperson Karen Long said attendance over the three days was in excess of 5,000, resulting in record gate receipts. The fair also enjoyed a record number of vendors with more than 100 booths, as well as a record number of volunteers helping out on the fairgrounds. This year’s wide range of activities and good weather helped bring about the big bump in attendance. For example, the Friday evening Fair Days Show ‘n’ Shine attracted 137 entrants, compared to a third of that figure for last year’s car show, held under grey, drizzling skies. The fair’s time-tested favourites — the

Canadian Fast Draw Championships, the Farmhand Challenge, the Antique Tractor Pull, the Chili Cook-off — were as successful as ever. The Agricultural Association’s display of garden produce and crafts also featured over 160 exhibits this year inside the Kinsmen Community Centre. However, several new features proved to be big hits. One of the most popular attractions on Saturday and Sunday was the Extreme Lawnmower Races. The modified little riding garden tractors are usually raced on flat farmland where they can easily achieve speeds of 80 k/ph, but the riders were challenged by the converted BMX track at the Aldergrove Athletic Park. The humps and bumps of the track slowed them down somewhat, as the tractors have virtually no suspension, but the derring-do of the

riders and flying mud that caked the racers was highly entertaining to watch. The return of the midway rides and carnival games was well-received by young and old alike this year, and the main stage featured a wide range of local musicians and performers. This year’s raffle of a weekend in Aldergrove, worth over $2,000, was a successful fundraiser for the Fair Days Society. Winner of the grand prize was Madeline Crozier. Amanda Stillwell was picked for the second prize of $1,000 worth of garden equipment, and Jennifer Packham was third prize winner. The FarmHand Challenge winners for 2013 are: first - Cody Utas, second Natasha Busch, third - Stephanie Busch. See page 3 for more photos from the Fair and check for updates on the Star’s website: www.aldergrovestar.com

The Township of Langley will either have to find another $15 million or start cutting features from the planned Aldergrove recreation centre. The news was delivered to the Monday afternoon meeting of council ( July 22) by way of a consultant’s report. BTY Group of Vancouver estimated the cost of constructing a community centre with a new three-storey aquatic centre and two-storey ice arena at $50.3 million, more than the $35.5 million “spending envelope originally approved by council. The report was the first detailed conceptual design cost estimate prepared for the project. The document was filed by Recreation, Culture and Parks director David Leavers along with his own report. The Leavers report said some of the increased cost is because the consultant measured the gross floor area of the conceptual design at 84,000 square feet, up from the architect’s estimate of 76,250 square feet. “It is important to note that [the original projected cost of $35.5 million was based on] this total gross area and these costs had not been confirmed previously by a qualified quality surveyor Leavers stated. The director said start of construction should be delayed until the funding issue can be sorted out. “Staff would only be confident in moving forward at this time with a total project budget of approximately $50,000,000, Leavers said. He added staff believe some savings can be found to reduce the figure below the consultant’s estimate, including funding from other sources such as federal and provincial grants. On top of the new $50 million construction cost estimate, Leavers said staff have also identified another $3 million in “off-site costs connected with upgrading roads, water and sewer connections to accommodate the new centre. Councillor Kim Richter called the revised figures “shocking and said for that cost, the community should get the 50 metre, eight-lane pool residents originally wanted instead of the 25 metre, six-lane pool approved by council. Councillor Charlie Fox hinted some cuts to the project could be required. “It may take longer to get some of the amenities we planned for, Fox said. “It may not be all that we wanted, Councillor Steve Ferguson said much the same, sounding doubtful additional funds will be found. Waterman is a 17 year old who has shown outstanding talent on both the Aldergrove Secondary boys soc-

cer team and the High Performance League team in Surrey. It will be his second foray into the national level, as he was picked for the B.C. U-13 team prior to high school. He is going into grade 12 this September at Aldergrove. Wterman earned his way onto the B.C. team with his performances at tournaments this past month in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. He made the final cut on the 18-man team headed for Montreal, where they will play Quebec and Manitoba in the first pool.

Pool plan costs go way up

FROM FRONT:

“We have to do the best we can with the money we have, Ferguson said. Councillor David Davis, who has often questioned the need for a new ice arena in an area of Langley that already has one, was protective of the pool. “We need to stick to the plan, Davis said.

Council made no decision on the funding matter at their Monday meeting, the last before they took the month of August off from public meetings. Neither the consultant or Leavers reports addressed the impact on the cost estimate of council’s decision to build a larger pool than the four-lane, 25-metre “short course pool recom-

mended by staff, a notion that drew heat from pool supporters. At the time, an “Aquatic Needs Assessment report by Professional Environmental Recreation Consultants (PERC) Inc. said going from four to six lanes would add $600,000 to $1 million to the cost of the project, plus an extra $150,000 to $200,000 a year to operate.

After climate scientistturned-Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver had a taste of debate in the B.C. legislature, I asked him for his impressions on that and other issues. Excerpts from that discussion: TF: You did a study comparing burning all the world’s coal reserves and all oil reserves, showing how big coal really is. The federal government says that when you add up what’s actually being used in North America, carbon emissions from coal are about 30 times more than from oil. Now we have a symbolic coal export ban in Vancouver, which doesn’t apply to Port Moody or Point Roberts or Prince Rupert. Do you think there’s any significance to this? AW: There is no question that the biggest issue around is coal, because coal use is on the rise world-wide. Not in the United States, because they’re converting [power production] to natural gas. This is why American producers are saying, let’s ship it to Asia. California says no, Oregon says no, Washington says no. Vancouver says no, British Columbia, not sure. It’s pushing us to start thinking about what I think is going to be the greatest industrial revolution the world has ever seen, which is transformation of energy systems

away from our combustion approach, which is essentially what we’ve been doing since we were in caves. We’ve gone from burning wood to now fossil wood, and fossil plants and fossil algae, to a much more modern era of production of energy through natural means, solar, wind, geothermal etc. TF: Liquified natural gas. The NDP says they are absolutely in favour of that now. AW: I have questioned the economics of it from day one. There’s a market differential that exists now. There’s that small window because Japan is moving from nuclear to natural gas. But we’re way behind everyone else. TF: Thirty years ago, Japan played Australia and B.C. off for metallurgical coal. Those northeast B.C. coal mines are back up and running again, but you’re seeing a similar thing here? AW: Yes. And if we start shipping natural gas to Asia … the Asian price comes down, the North American price goes up. British Columbians haven’t been told that. TF: How has the legislature session been for you? AW: I sit there and watch the two parties. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. And I hope more British Columbians watch this,

because this needs to change. And I think it can change. TF: The NDP opposition decides when you and Delta South Independent Vicki Huntington get your occasional moments in question period? AW: Yes, and if I’ve asked it’s been no problem. TF: Grudgingly no doubt. If the NDP had their way, the closest Green Party member would be in Holland. AW: [Laughs] Yes. Certainly not in North America. There’s this sense of entitlement within the NDP to the ‘green’ vote. And I sense that the B.C. Liberals very much like our existence, as being not NDP. The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger. It’s kids going to school, talking about conservation, and going home to talk to their parents. That’s where our votes are coming from. TF: Are you going to be found standing in front of a coal train any time soon? AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Last summer’s inaugural Ride Into History featured an entire weekend of fun activities for the whole family including a concert within the walls of the Fort Langley National Historic Site, a poker run and a traditional First Nations banquet — all in support of the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope and their mission to end homelessness in our community. This year’s event, taking place July 26-28, promises to be even more exciting with an all-ages concert on Friday evening featuring Steve Elliott as Elvis Presley and The JC Celebration Band paying tribute to Johnny Cash as well as fun family activities, including a carnival, on Saturday. The Ride into History is a weekend long celebration of motorcycling and the history of B.C., organized by a group of volunteers from the City and Township of Langley, Fort Langley, Kwantlen First Nations, the motorcycle community and the Fort Langley National Historic Site. The goal of the event is to raise money and awareness for the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope, which recognizes that all people have histories and are working towards bettering their futures. Fundraising activities throughout the weekend will include pancake breakfasts hosted by the Fort Langley Lions Club; a motorcycle show-n-shine; prime rib dinner (provided by Milestones); and for motorcycle riders, a three hour scenic ride that starts and finishes at the Fort Langley National Historic Site. “The Ride into History promises to be a lot of fun, but it highlights an important issue that affects us all,” says Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “We encourage everyone to come out to this unique event this summer, to support the Gateway of Hope and help those in need in our community.” Inspired by a common desire to give back to the communities they serve, three local credit unions — Envision Financial, Aldergrove Financial Group and Prospera Credit Union — have once again come together as the title sponsors of this event. “The Gateway of Hope touches the lives of so many members of our community and makes such a positive and lasting difference in those lives,” says Aldergrove Financial Group CEO Gus K. Hartl. “Along with Prospera Credit Union and Envision Financial, we are proud to support the second annual Ride into History event and to be working together again this year to help end homelessness in our community.” Serving the community of Langley, the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope is much more than a homeless shelter. In addition to providing emergency shelter and the community meal program, the Gateway of Hope offers training opportunities like the Cooks Training Program and our Community Kitchen Program; family services which include: an income tax service program, a school supply program, clothing and furniture for fire victims and emergency clothing and food for those in need; and the Opportunities Program which supports residents as they learn life and employment skills.

Animal ‘voices’ chosen Aldergrove Star

The Greater Vancouver Zoo announce the winning voices from their voiceover contest for their new television commercial. The voiceover contest ran from June 7 to June 16, and received over 100 entries. Contest entrants had to record themselves saying specific lines for an animal to be featured in the commercial. Entrants could choose to be the voice for Hazina the Hippo, Hagrid the Owl, Boomer the Lion, Shadow the Grizzly Bear, Boris the African Spurred Tortoise, Chulva the Parrot, or Skittles the Capybara. Submissions were then carefully reviewed by JoyTV, and the winning voices were Asia Mattu of South Delta, Callyn Dorval of Burnaby, Dennon Stein of Kamloops and Hunter Golden of Surrey. Each of the winning voices wins a family day pass to the zoo and has the exciting opportunity of being the featured voice for that animal in the commercial. The new commercial is already airing on JoyTV, CTV, Global TV and Fairchild TV.

Police warn of thefts from vehicles in parks By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star

The Abbotsford Police Department is reminding the public about the risks of leaving valuable in their vehicles, following three incidents over the weekend. Const. Ian MacDonald said two of the thefts occurred at Mill Lake Park. In one, a woman locked her purse in her trunk, but left her win-

dows rolled down. The culprit was able to get into the car and activate the button to open the trunk. In the second incident, the individual had locked his/her vehicle but left money, an iPod and cigarettes in plain view. The thief broke into the car and stole the items. The third theft took place at Matsqui Trail Park. In this case, the woman had placed her purse in the trunk of her

locked vehicle, but the thief broke into the trunk when she left. MacDonald said it’s possible that the culprit watched the victims place the items in their trunks prior to the thefts. He said these types of crimes are common at this time of year, and advised the public to either take their valuables with them when they vacate their vehicles or leave the items at home.

The Aldergrove Soccer Society is one of the beneficiaries of the Community Gaming Grants announced this month. The Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development provided grants worth a total of $41,500 to Langley-area organizations, MLA Rich Coleman announced. Local organizations receiving grants included the Buffalo Celtic Music Society ($10,000) and the Aldergrove Soccer Society ($31,500). Across B.C., 42 recipients shared $1,363,010 in the latest rounds of grants. “Local non-profits have a tremendous impact in our communities, and bring people together through sports tournaments, music recitals and all the other events they host every year. These grants will allow them to continue delivering the programs that Langley residents enjoy, said Fort LangleyAldergrove MLA Rich Coleman.

Keep your old power meter, for a fee By TOM FLETCHER Aldergrove Star

VICTORIA – People who insist on refusing new wireless electrical meters can keep their old mechanical meter as long as it lasts, if they pay a monthly fee, Energy Minister Bill Bennett announced Thursday. Customers can keep their mechanical meters until they break down, their Measurement Canada accuracy seal expires or the customer relocates, the ministry said in a statement. The mechanical meter option is added to an earlier compromise with BC Hydro customers who still don’t have a digital smart meter, which transmits power consumption and status via radio signals. Customers can have a digital meter with its transmission function turned off, or keep their old meter, as long as they pay the cost of having the meter read manually. Bennett said the cost of meter reading will be about $20 a month. Customers who accept

a deactivated smart meter will also pay a fee of about $100 to have it adjusted. The fee to keep a mechanical meter will be higher, because it will require a separate system to manually record and bill for power consumption, Bennett said. NDP energy critic John Horgan said he is pleased that the proposed fees will be reviewed by the B.C. Utilities Commission before being implemented. The opt-out provision should have been made available from the start, instead of rushing to meet the government’s artificial deadline to install smart meters, Horgan said. BC Hydro reports that 60,000 smart meter installations have been delayed due to customer request, while 1.8 million or 96 per cent of customers now have a functioning smart meter. Some people persist in the belief that the radio signals from smart meters are a health hazard, despite the fact that the periodic meter signals represent a tiny

The Fraser Valley Biennale returns this month, drawing artists from both sides of the river to Kariton Gallery in Abbotsford. The upcoming show has a distinctive local connection. A pair of Langley visual artists Alex Stewart (painting/reproduction) and Aldergrove’s Susan Gorris (ceramics) are among the 15 participants who will display their work, during the exhibit, which opens this weekend at the gallery in Abbotsford’s Mill Lake Park. The Fraser Valley Regional Biennale is a collective art exhibition that celebrates and explores local and regional visual artmaking. The project was created in 2011 through a partnership between The Reach Gallery Museum, Abbotsford Arts Council, Mission Arts Council, Maple Ridge Art Gallery and the Langley Arts Council to present a wide range of artwork created by both emerging and professional artists throughout the Fraser Valley. Adding to the festive atmosphere will be Langley’s Robyn and Ryleigh, who will perform as part of the Envision Concert in the Park series on the show’s opening weekend. The country pop duo will be on stage from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. Concert goers are also invited to take part in Envision Financial’s Full Cupboard program by bringing non-perishable food or cash donations to Mill Lake Park. Since its launch, more than 2,600 pounds of food and $25,500 has been collected, region-wide, through The Full Cupboard campaign. All food and cash donations will remain in the communities where they are collected.

Tough Call for the Umpire

‘Her-icanes’ ready for Bantam Baseball BC Championships By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

LFC Dynamite capture silver Aldergrove Star

The Langley Dynamite U14 team placed second overall in B.C. during Provincial Cup play, July 4-7 at Inter River Park in North Vancouver, after losing a close 2-1 finish against Vernon Selects. The girls played their hearts out in the final game Sunday, but just couldn’t put the ball in the net during an exciting second half of the final game. Leading up to the finals, they played hard against Nelson with a 2-0 victory on Thursday with Kylie

Poohachoff and Hannah Plowman scoring a goal each for the Langley squad. They defeated Powell River on Friday with an outstanding 4-0 outcome, with two goals coming from Kylie Poohachoff and a goal each from Rachel Lamborn and Jade Nemeth. They went into Saturday’s game against Prince George, who had the same record as the Langley team at 2 and 0, and ended up with a 2-2 tie after a hard fought battle, with both goals being scored by Taylor Cahill. The Langley Dynamite finished

first in their pool which put them up against Vernon, who also finished first in their pool. The game was tied at half time 1-1, with the team coming out strong in the second half. Langley’s only goal of the game was scored by Jordan Hagen. Vernon ended up a goal, but the Langley girls did not give up, pouring their hearts and souls into trying to put two more goals in the net to win the championship. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for our Langley squad, but they came home with the silver medal.

For the first time in the history of B.C. Minor baseball an all-girls team, the Her-icanes, will be representing Aldergrove as one of the co-hosts of the Provincial Tournament. The U-15 girls will be facing the other 11 all-boys teams for the title of B.C.’s Bantam A champions. Co-hosted by the Aldergrove Dodgers and the Her-icanes, the tournament takes place at Aldergrove Athletic Park, July 31 to August 4 (or August 5 in event of rained-out games). Wayne Bampton, the general manager of the Aldergrove Peewee and Bantam girls teams, as well as the Okanagan Halos, says the girls baseball program has come a long way since it started five years ago. The U-15 Her-icanes are also the B.C. Select team that is going to the National Championships in Halifax, August 22. The team’s players are from Kelowna,

Vancouver Island, Chilliwack and Abbotsford. The Her-icanes are scheduled to play the Aldergrove Dodgers in the Bantam A Provincial Tournament here on Saturday, August 3 at 3 p.m. The U-13 Her-icanes are Peewees and feature a pair of sisters from Aldergrove. They are also the B.C. Select team which will be going to the Girls Western Championships in Redcliff, Alberta, August 8-12 (the original hosts, Medicine Hat had to cancel due to heavy rains). Bampton says, “A couple of weeks ago the Blue Jays Academy came to Nat Bailey Stadium for Girls Day, one of four Canadian cities to have such an honour. Most of the Her-icanes were in attendance — the story behind this all-girls team in the Provincials is newsworthy our U-13 team and the Okanagan team (Halos) are going to Alberta for the Girls Western Championships.”

Formula Vee Invitational a ‘family affair’ Aldergrove Star

The Family Affair Racing Team is presenting its fourth annual Formula Vee Invitational Race on August 3 and 4 at Mission Raceway Park. Formula Vees are open wheel race cars with a 1200cc Volkswagen Beetle engine. Drivers from as far away as Oregon and California come to compete in this eagerly antici-

pated event. Former SCCA Formula Vee Champion Dennis Andrade from Brush Prairie, Washington, has won this race the last two years. Multi-Formula Vee Champion, 80 year old Al Ores of Burnaby, will be competing for top spots, giving his son-in-law, Scott Arthur of Mission, a run for his money. Scott is also a two-time Formula Vee Champion.

Also vying for top spots is Pam Williams, a Formula Libra Champion, and her mother, Gayle Baird, also of Ladner. The team was started in 2009 by Scott and Jennifer Arthur of Mission and Bob and Pam Williams of Ladner. This is an arrive-and-drive program for racers who don’t want the upkeep of a race car, or who just want to try an open wheel car.

The Family Affair Racing Team is working with Covenant House, an organization which provides shelter, food, guidance and support for street youth to get them off the streets. Donations will be accepted at the track, and all monies will go directly to Covenant House. For information, see websites: www.unionracing.ca and www.covenanthousebc.org

‘Recycling Ambassador’ inspires change Aldergrove Star

Catherine Forsythe was in Grade 5 or 6 when she first became aware of the impact people had on the earth. Taking her father’s old 8mm movie camera, she went down to a nearby river and filmed the garbage, pollution, and dead fish floating on the surface. “I didn’t like what I was seeing,” she said. Since then, Forsythe has been doing her part to keep the environment green and sustainable through recycling and composting, and encouraging others to do the same at work and at home – even if that home is shared by dozens of others.
