Trudeau stops at Truscott Farms BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

TODAY'S WEATHER

Over 150 people attended a reception for federal Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau when he stopped at Erickson’s Truscott Farms on Sunday afternoon as part of a whirlwind tour of Western Canada. The meet and greet event was a rela-

tively casual affair, with Trudeau circulating through the crowd to chat and take photos with as many people as possible before he headed to his next stop, in Nelson. During the last federal election, “there was tremendous interest from around here,” the 41-year-old Trudeau told the Advance after the reception. “I’m not giving up on any places in Canada

as places where the Liberals aren’t relevant.” Those places include small towns, which, he said, are just as important as larger centres. “People tend to forget that’s what Canada is,” said Trudeau. “We’re a country of big cities but with small towns scattered across this beautiful land.” See TRUDEAU, page 3

Events at the Creston and District Community Complex are going unnoticed, says a local committee, and a digital message board on Canyon Street would increase awareness. Signe Miller and Nicole Nilsson are seeking input from user groups to present to the Creston Valley services committee (comprised of Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay area A, B and C directors) at its 10 a.m. Aug. 8 meeting. Since the community complex’s expansion and renovation three years ago, there has been no signage whatsoever to list events. “We used to have a board on the face of the rec centre, but, of course, that was only good if you were in the parking lot,” said Miller. She has been told by people from out of town — and even some locals — that they have driven right past the Canyon Street-19th Avenue North intersection without realizing the community complex is even there. RDCK funds are too limited to purchase the $20,000-$25,000 board, but Miller’s committee has already researched grants and found a non-profit organization willing to apply for one. One Kootenay has kept regional readers busy trying to decide which of the three shortlisted books should get the nod. Each year, booklovers read, discuss and vote on the book they think all Kootenay folk should read. The deadline for voting for the 2013 One Book, One Kootenay selection is Aug. 2. This year’s shortlist is comprised of Never Going Back by Antonia Banyard, Confined Space by Deryn Collier (a former Creston resident) and The Dolphin’s Tooth: A Decade in Search of Adventure by Bruce Kirkby. Since May, these Kootenay authors have been reading in libraries across the region, either in person or virtually through film. With several days left to read and vote, the Kootenay Library Federation that hosts OBOK is urging people to pick up copies of the books at their local libraries, and vote. Trudeau From page 1 In order to get to know all of the country’s residents and earn their respect, it’s vital to actually meet them. “You don’t do that from an office in Ottawa,” said Trudeau, the son of former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau, who served from 1968-79 and 1980-84. In the hour or so he spent at the Erickson fruit stand, Trudeau said he learned that local farmers are concerned about water systems infrastructure and high water rates. “It’s an opportunity to start a conversation that gets heard by people in the halls of power,” he said. Trudeau’s tour is part of a family vacation, with the goal of hiking with his children, Xavier and Ella-Grace, to Kokanee Lake, the site where an avalanche killed his younger brother, Michel, in 1998. Trudeau said he visited Creston about 12 years ago for the Kokanee Summit, the now-defunct music festival held by the Columbia Brewery, while raising funds in honour of his brother for the Kokanee Glacier Cabin. In a brief speech, he expressed his excitement to be back among the hard-working farmers of the Creston Valley. Trudeau also took the opportunity to educate the crowd about the federal Liberal Party, which would create a government “based on facts and best practices, not on partisan electoral advantage.” Although he doesn’t see the Conservatives as meanspirited, he does feel that the ruling party is “unambitious for our country.” Challenges — such as the economy, First Nations, education and health care — are not being met with any decisive action. “They throw up their hands and say, ‘You know what? We’re better than Spain.’ ” He hopes that, should the Liberals form the next government of Canada, it would encourage more citizens to see a purpose in getting involved. “We’re tired of having to be cynical about politics,” he said.

Japanese guests tour valley Advance Staff

Three Japanese visitors, two of them from Creston’s sister city, enjoyed a week of touring the Creston Valley, with activities including brewery and winery tours, a visit to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area and art galleries, fishing and boating. Mitsuya Akshiba, from Japan’s Yokohama region, is in Canada for one year on a

teacher exchange and has been tutoring Creston Mayor Ron Toyota’s grandson, Bryan Dumas, who leaves Aug. 23 on a Rotary youth students exchange to Yamaguchi prefecture, staying with three host families for 10 months. Shoji Nagao visited Creston last year with others from Kaminoho (Creston’s sister city, now part of the city of Seki), and wanted to bring his wife, Chidori, for her first visit.

“They have a small farm and grow their own rice ... and also green tea, which they sell,” said Toyota in a report prepared for town council. The Nagaos spent 10 days in Canada, arriving in Calgary on July 12, and staying in Banff with translator Yoshie Kawamura, who brought them to Creston on July 15. They flew out of Cranbrook to return home on Monday.

David Skretting in a press release. “Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the motorcycle and suffered significant injuries.” The male driver, from Salmo, suffered serious injuries, and the passenger, a Ymir female, suffered critical injuries. They were transported by ground ambulance to the Creston Valley Hospital and were both later airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alta. The pair

Creston residents can save energy and money in a FortisBC program supported by the Town of Creston. The Kootenay Energy Diet helps residential customers reduce electrical consumption by providing a home assessment, energy-reducing accessories, rebates and low-cost renovation loans. At the July 16 regular council meeting, a resolution was passed to pay $30 towards the original KED energy assessment fee of $60 to the first 200 Creston registrants. “I am very supportive of this initiative,” said Coun. Joanna Wilson. “It provides people like myself who have older homes with the information and assistance we need to reduce energy costs.” “We thank the Town of Creston for the resolution to further support the Kootenay Energy Diet and the newsletter assistance to promote the program,” said Patricia Dehnel, who manages FortisBC’s Power Sense program. “We also thank Coun. Wilson for being the first council member to join the ‘diet’.” When homeowners sign on to the KED, a representative will conduct a home assessment and install free energy efficient products like low-flow showerheads and CFL lighting, an approximate $400 value. FortisBC has a rebate program for some home renovations and upgrades, and has partnered with Creston and District Credit Union, which will a offer low interest, long-term amortization loan program to participants. A local “energy coach” will also provide personalized service and information. In Creston, the KED launch will take place on Sept. 11 with a presentation and sign-up opportunity at Creston and District Credit Union from 7-9 p.m. More information can be found by clicking on Kootenay Energy Diet at www.fortisbc/Electricity. The next Town of Creston newsletter will also include information.

RDCK directors made $800,000 in 2012 BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

Regional District of Central Kootenay directors and their alternates paid themselves a combined $803,000 in stipends and expenses in 2012, according to annual financial statements released last week. That’s up from $773,000 in 2011. “It seems like a lot of money for 20 directors, but when you look at the overall operation of a $60 million a year business, it’s not very much,” said chair John Kettle, himself the top earner at $69,000 plus $19,000 in expenses. The 11 rural directors each made $31,836 while the nine

RCMP

municipal directors each received $12,348 on top of the salary they earned from sitting on their respective councils. Directors can make additional money for attending board meetings and chairing various committees. They can also be reimbursed for costs incurred while on the road for regional district business, including accommodation, mileage at 57 cents per kilometre, and meals to a maximum of $75 per day, although they don’t always claim their full entitlements. As chair, Kettle made an additional $30,288 on top of his director’s pay while vice-chair Hillary Elliott took home an extra $2,640. Salaries are expected to cover the cost of a home office and travel within sometimessprawling constituencies. Rates are adjusted annually based on the consumer price index. Although the chair’s salary ranks somewhere in the middle compared to other regional districts, basic stipends for rural directors are among the most generous in the province. In the neighbouring Kootenay Boundary, they receive about $19,000 per year, in the Cariboo $22,000, and at the low end, in Alberni-Clayoquot, $7,500. Central Kootenay’s municipal

From page 4 •No injuries were reported when a blue Hyundai pulled out onto Highway 21 and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. •A serious fire might have been averted when a police officer checking on an alarm in a residence thought he could smell smoke. Fire department personnel attended and found a hotplate had been left on when the resident left. They determined that a fire would likely have broken out in the next hour if the problem hadn’t been noted. •A male broke into a residence in the 1400 block of Vancouver Street and assaulted another male. He was arrested and remained in custody at press time. July 19 •Police could not locate a barking dog that was the subject of a complaint in the 1800 block of Ash Street. •An iPhone was reported stolen in an unspecified park. •Police continue to investigate a break-in to a Canyon Street store. They were unable to locate the thief, despite the fact he left a trail of Kit Kat chocolate bars in his wake. •The driver of a semi has been charged with failing to yield the right-of-way after an oncoming Chevrolet Tahoe ran into his vehicle when he was making a left turn from Northwest Boulevard onto Highway 3 at the Highway 3/3A junction. •A scene that looked like it was created by Gallagher, the malletwielding comedian, was all that remained after a truck loaded with watermelons took a corner too fast and tipped over on Highway 95 near Kingsgate. No injuries were reported but the melons did not survive the impact. •A driver was ticketed for reversing unsafely and leaving the scene of an accident after he backed into a

LocaL News compensation also ranks amongst the highest in BC, although at least two regional districts, Cowichan Valley and Thompson-Nicola, pay their directors more. As far as expenses, the most frugal director last year, not including alternates, was rural Castlegar’s Gord Zaitsoff who billed for $2,712. Among municipal directors Castlegar’s Lawrence Chernoff had $3,709 in expense claims and when combined with salary, was the lowest-paid board member at $18,396. “The directors I know work hard for their money,” Kettle told 103.5 The Bridge. “Municipal directors have an advantage in that they have mayors and councils to work with. Rural directors are mayors and councils of their own areas. We work out of our trucks and houses.” Kettle added he’d never had a problem accepting his paycheque, and doesn’t think others should either: “You don’t want people to suffer financially by taking this job. This isn’t a volunteer job. It’s fulltime for most of us.” On the staff side, the financial statement showed 17 people made $75,000 or more in 2012, and five earned $100,000

parked vehicle in a Helen Road parking lot. When contacted at his home in Calgary he said he had checked and couldn’t see any damage to the other vehicle. He has agreed to pay for any repairs. •Police are investigating a report of bullet holes in an outbuilding in the 3800 block of Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road. •A black GT Racer snow sled was found in the back yard of a residence in the 1400 block of Vancouver Street. It can be claimed at the police station by its owner. •An intoxicated female was arrested in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue North and held in cells until sober. •A female who complained about a barking and untended dog on Majestic Road in Kingsgate was referred to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Regional District of Central Kootenay. July 20 •When police investigated a complaint about a youth making threats, the family agreed to deal with the issue. •After a break-in to a residence in the 15000 block of Crawford Creek Road, a suspect threatened and assaulted a male, then fled. Police are attempting to locate the assailant in what is believed to have been a retaliatory crime. •A white Samsung Galaxy cellphone was found on a bench behind Millennium Park. The phone is locked with a password and can be claimed at the police station by its owner. •Police could not locate a male and female reported to be fighting outside a local motel. •Despite driving slowly with windows down and playing loud country music, a patrolling officer was unable to locate a horse reported to be loose on Hood Road. July 21 •Police are investigating a complaint about an unwanted male who got into a Riverview Road residence. •Two occupants of a vehicle that

struck a power pole in the 3600 block of 46th Street required hospital treatment. •A driver was warned after police received a report about a black Chrysler speeding and passing on a double solid line in the 5000 block of Highway 3A. •A motorcyclist had left the scene when police arrived to investigate a crash into a concrete barrier on Highway 95 at Railway Avenue. •Two fire extinguishers were set off during a break and entry to the unoccupied Pioneer Villa on Ash Street. •Both vehicles were damaged in a crash in the 1300 block of Northwest Boulevard. Alberta dries out

We drove to Calgary on Friday, and as we headed east on Tongue Creek Road to the north side of High River there was a spot where traffic was instructed to slow to 50 km/h. On the north side of the road was a cluster of heavy-duty equipment beside a large number of Atco-type portable housing units. Oil patch camp, I assumed, as there has been lots of new exploration going on in the area not so far from where the oil boom started in 1914 when the Dingman Discovery Well began spewing natural gas in Turner Valley. Then we turned north on Highway 2A, near the often malodorous Cargill beef processing plant, and there was another similar construction site. It was only then that I realized that that these were temporary communities meant for those who have been displaced by the floods. Our younger son, Ryan, is an RCMP constable and he had told us earlier that the devastation in High River had to be seen to truly appreciate it. A member of a federal drug, commercial crime and security detachment in Calgary, he had been seconded to High River immediately after floodwaters did their dirty deed. He did general duty work, responding to calls and patrolling the area. Whenever he saw people in their front yards, he stopped to chat, asking how things were. The stories, he said, were heartbreaking. That night we drove toward downtown Calgary, along Fourth Street Southwest. Payne Street centreline not straight To the Editor: I have owned a business on Payne Street for the past 15 years, and the town suddenly decided that the road should have a yellow centreline. Looking down the road, the line is as crooked as a dog’s hind leg, so I talked to a town worker and asked who had painted it. His reply was that the work was that of a contractor and not town staff. I was under the impression that the town was being frugal with taxpayers’ money, so I must assume that this crooked line must be that of the lowest

bidder. I hope there were penalties for this substandard work. If I drove the way this contractor painted, I would expect to be pulled over by the RCMP and asked to take a sobriety test — well, if it meant walking a straight line, it better not be a centreline on Payne Street. Dave Fowler Creston

More and more local food is available. The valley could be nearly food self-sufficient, and export instead of import could be the order of day. Recent floods and extreme weather conditions all over the world should be another wake-up call. Climate change is with us, CO2 levels have gone to 400 parts per million and leading scientists have put out the warning. If we don’t change the way we live, pollute and overconsume, climate change will be irreversible. Will future generations have a liveable Mother Earth? WRITING ON THE WALL

Columbia Bottle Recycle

By Pastor Ian Cotton

Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church Perhaps you have used the expression, “the writing on the wall,” but did not know where it came from. Many phrases we use come straight from the Bible! You will find this one in Daniel chapter 5. King Belshazzar made a great feast, and to show the superiority of his gods, he used the holy vessels taken from God’s temple in Jerusalem. They drank wine from them, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. Then the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote on the wall of the king’s palace. The colour drained from the king’s face and his knees knocked together. He called for his wise men. But again, none could read the writing on the wall or determine its meaning. The queen heard of the dilemma and said, “O king, live forever! Let Daniel be called, and he will tell you what it means. In the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him.” King Nebuchadnezzar had made him chief of the wise men because Daniel had an excellent spirit, knowledge, and could understand and interpret dreams, and solve problems. Daniel was brought before the king, who disparagingly said, “You are that Daniel, one of the exiles of Judah. I have heard that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. Now the wise men could not tell me the meaning. If you tell me the meaning I will make you the third ruler in the kingdom.” Daniel replied, “Keep your gifts; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king and make known the interpretation. O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father, kingship and greatness and glory and majesty. But when his heart was lifted up and he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his throne, until he knew that the Most High God rules the kingdom of men, and sets over it whom he will. “And you, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, but you have rebelled against the Lord of heaven; and you have not honored God, in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, and from His presence the hand was sent. “It says that God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting; your kingdom is given to the Medes and Persians. … That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.” The wise men could not give an answer but again, Daniel showed that God knows the future. Ian Cotton is the retired pastor of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Perrin point leader during volleyball world series BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Canada didn’t make it into the final four in the FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) Volleyball World League series but the team did beat Russia, the eventual champions, before losing to Brazil to end a great run. Winner of the C pool, Canada drew into a grouping with Russia and Brazil, teams that would emerge as finalists in games played in Argentina. Russia had won the only three previous matches against Canada and the reigning Olympic gold medalists were heavily favoured to roll over the team ranked No. 18 in the world when World League games started last month. The July 19 match started off according to prediction, with Russia winning the first two games, 25-20 and 25-21. Canada then roared back, sweeping the next three games, 25-23, 25-21 and 15-11. In making the dramatic comeback, Canada joins Korea as the only team in the last 15 years to win a World League match after being down two sets. Creston’s Gord Perrin led all players with 20 points. Canada exited the competition with a 3-0 loss to Brazil, but would end up with a best-ever fifth-place finish in the 2013 World League. Russia swept Brazil in three games to win the 2013 championship. "We showed we can play on the big stage in the world and beat great teams in the future,” Canada’s Gavin Schmitt said in a press conference. Perrin, interviewed on CBC Radio shortly after his team’s historic win over Russia, was one of Canada’s top performers throughout the international league season. The 23-year-old now returns to Turkey for the winter, where he plays professionally. As a result of Canada’s strong showing, the team has moved up seven places in world rankings and is now rated as the 11th best men’s volleyball team on the planet.

Rootsy tunes part of Sean Ashby concert SUBMITTED Chances are, if you’ve had a radio on today you’ve heard his guitar playing. As one of North America’s go-to guitarists, Sean Ashby has played and recorded with Sarah McLachlan, Delerium, Ginger (formerly Grapes Of Wrath) and many more. Ashby, a singer-songwriter-guitarist-producer who released his debut album, Brass and Gold, in April 2008, plays at Creston’s Snoring Sasquatch on July 31. Brass and Gold, Ashby’s first solo outing after 10 years as leader of the award-

winning band Jack Tripper, was an eclectic record that showcased an impressive musical palette. The album received favourable reviews in important Canadian publications such as Exclaim magazine and the Vancouver Province, and received airplay on college radio and across the country on CBC Radio. McLachlan’s guitarist on the original Lilith Fair, as well as the Mirrorball and Afterglow albums, Ashby appeared with her on Just Like You (Cats In The Cradle) for Darryl McDaniels’ (from Run-DMC) solo CD. Also with McLachlan, he received two four-time platinum U.S. discs and one diamond Canadian disc for studio and live CDs. He has appeared on the Grammy Awards twice, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno five times, Saturday Night Live and David Letterman three times, as well as other major TV shows. Ashby’s guitar playing has appeared on CDs with sales in excess of 10 million copies worldwide — so far. “I am working at building an audience for my music, playing shows and improving as a songwriter and performer,” said Ashby, when asked about his hopes for his solo future. Since Brass and Gold’s release, Ashby has been tour-

Diamond tribute playing at legion BY KRISTI PATTON Penticton Western News From a rockstar’s swagger to belting out tunes of an iconic crooner, former Penticton man Jason Scott — who presents Diamond Forever: A Celebration of Neil Diamond at Creston’s Royal Canadian Legion on July 26 — has found his brass ring. “It is kind of like a gunslinger from the old days,” said Scott. “You are the lead singer in a rock band and life is at your beck and call. You get whatever you want and have people eating up your music. That is power. Then it all disappears. Now the brass ring isn’t getting the record contract.”

Getting down the look, the sound and moves of Neil Diamond became Scott’s new mission. And he jumped in with both feet, but it took a big slap in the face to get there. After signing a record contract with a label in Vancouver in 1989, Scott’s friend Brian MacLeod (of the Headpins and Chilliwack fame) began producing it. Six months in, MacLeod was diagnosed with cancer, and shortly after, Scott’s good friend died and so did the distribution deal. One night he ended up at a karaoke bar with his sister and she asked him to sing a song for her, picking out Love On The Rocks. “The Vancouver Canucks were playing on the TVs and the only screen for the lyrics was on the sport screen at the front so you sung with your back to the crowd. I started singing and all of sudden there was this big whoop in the crowd and I thought the Canucks had scored. I spin around and the crowd are all on their feet screaming about this Neil Diamond thing.” Despite being completely disillusioned after McLeod died, everything started to fall in place for him to become a Neil Diamond tribute artist. That was 15 years ago. Since then, Scott was awarded the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Tribute Artists award in 2010, second place in the

“When you pull something off like this you get tears in your eyes,” said Scott. “Diamond is very charismatic and when he swings his arms to the left everyone looks to the left. I have seen him live twice and it is electric and only a few people in the world have that presence.” Tickets (which include snacks and appetizers) are $15, available at Black Bear Books and the legion. With a voice like a “warm blanket on a cold winter’s night” (Jericho Folk Club) or a “shady tree on a hot summer's day” (Scott Cook), Steve Palmer — who plays at the Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 2 — is equally at home on six-string or 12-string guitar, performing for folk festivals, house concerts and soft seating theatres.
Forty years as a travelling musician is a lot of road, and Palmer is still playing and still touring, grown enough to sing about life and simple pleasures with all the unhurried authority of a quiet and simple folksinging road-survivor. Drawing his inspiration from country and folk

legends like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Merle Travis and the Carter Family, Palmer presents a joyous blending of original and traditional country, folk, gospel, blues, and ragtime. “I perform solo, backing myself on six- and 12-string guitar,” he said on his website. “I play a lot of Travis-style guitar and quite a bit of Carterstyle, too. I feature some of the music of these country roots legends in my shows. About one third of my show is instrumental.” Tickets are $15 in advance at Black Bear Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Kingfisher Used Books, and $18 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show starts at 8.

PCSS class historians look back on 13 years The following speech was delivered by historians Grant Gailius and Rylan Lavallee at the June 7 Prince Charles Secondary School graduation ceremony held at the Creston and District Community Complex:

Grant Gailius

Grant Gailius: Greetings esteemed family, friends and graduates. Rylan Lavallee: ‘Sup. GG: I am Grant Gailius. RL: And I am Rylan Lavallee. GG: We RL: have GG: decided RL: to GG: share RL: the GG: work RL: load GG: equa RL: lly.

GG: Just kidding, we’re not gonna put you through that. RL: Well, here we are in Grade 12. We made it this far with most of the class. GG: Thirteen years of being a cog in the machine of the public school system. RL: Y’know, it’s weird to think it’s been 13 years already. I remember it like it was yesterday. GG: Do you really? RL: No, actually, just shaving. GG: You started shaving in kindergarten? RL: Well, see, I attended kindergarten in Erickson, where our class had Mrs. Husband, Cooper’s mom, for a teacher. The way it worked is that there were different “stations” situated around the room for us to

play at once our work was complete — things like a reading station, with books, or a LiteBrite station, housed in an overturned refrigerator box. There was even a wedding station, with dress up clothes so you could join your childhood sweetheart in holy matrimony. If I recall, I married Emma Lamontange. I’m pretty sure those weren’t legally binding, though; a shame because 13 years of alimony really would’ve helped pay for university. But I digress… Perhaps most popular of all the stations was the shaving station. “What business did fiveyear-olds have shaving?” you ask. Well, it wasn’t quite shaving. See PCSS, page 20

PCSS historians’ speech

From page 19 There was shaving foam and popsicle sticks, so we’d smear the shaving foam on our faces and then scrape it off with popsicle sticks to our little hearts’ content. Unfortunately the shaving station was so popular many of us developed slight rashes from “shaving” so often. Little did I know how inconvenient shaving your face would actually become. GG: Or your legs. RL: Yes, Grant. Or your legs… (uncomfortable pause) GG: Speaking of shaving… Both: Puberty! RL: Ah, yes. Grade 8. It was a time of transitions. GG: Girls were becoming curvier, guys were becoming long and awkward and gangly. RL: Some guys never stopped being long and awkward and gangly… (sideways glance at Grant) GG: Speaking of long and awkward… (long and awkward pause) High school dances. RL: Those were certainly a misadventure in butterflies and sweaty palmed romance. GG: The room was always too hot, and music was always too loud, but we always had a good time. RL: And y’know, that music was such a big part of our high school experience. GG: Well Rylan, how’s about we fire up the musical time machine? (Low starts, they sing along) RL: We’re sorry for that little outburst, but, y’know… (“It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late”) GG: But just hearing all this music again is making me wanna (“Just dance, gonna be okay, da-da-doo-doo, just dance”) RL: Grant, we really need to hurry this segment up. We’re running out of time! (“Tick tock, on the clock, DJ blow ma speakers up, Tonight, I’mma fight, til we see the sunlight”) GG: Rylan, Rylan, Rylan — we gotta stop! All these sweet tunes are gonna blow out the speakers! (“Cause we gon’ rock this club, we gon’ go all night, we gon’ light it up, like it’s dynamite”) RL: Well Grant, I think this bit has overstayed it’s welcome.

GG: One more Rylan, pleeease. RL: Oh, all right. (“Party rock is in the house tonight, Everybody just have a good time”) GG: These songs will forever be tied to our high school experience. RL: But another big part of the high school experience was the teachers. GG: Multiple lessons with them have given us timeless memories that we’ll cherish for years to come. RL: Things like Ms. Seldon’s ugly shirt, GG: Gribbin’s glasses, RL: Mrs. C’s los Pandas, GG: Mr. Hawton’s mullet, RL: Mrs. Douma’s purses, GG: Mr. Nelson’s “Morgan wrasslin’ ”, RL: Mr. Fischer’s grumpy bears, GG: Mr. Ferguson’s moustache, RL: Mrs. Breeden’s boccelism, GG: Mrs. McNiece’s wood cookies, RL: Mrs. Miller’s accent, GG: Mr. No’s fool children, RL: Mr. Coe’s dulcet tones, GG: Mr Monsen’s beating stick. RL: And just a word to those not mentioned, don’t feel offended. GG: It just means we didn’t have something to make fun of you for. RL: Speaking of making fun of people… GG: By no means should our esteemed peers be exempted. RL: Let’s start with those who aren’t here to defend themselves. Both: Patrick Stewart. RL: Not to be confused with the Star Trek actor of the same name. Patrick was a former student, and one time was showing off his new heavy duty iPhone case, throwing his phone around, before promptly breaking it. Both: Ha ha, Patrick. GG: Remember that time Brett talked about hockey? RL: Also there was that time Bishop put a softball through that guy’s windshield. Both: Ha ha, Bishop. GG: There was also that one time, when the whole

final exam, of calculus 12, weighed on whether or not Marcus Range did his homework. Both: Ha ha, Marcus. RL: When Emma told everyone that Madi got hit by the handi-bus and everyone thought it was true? Both: Ha ha, Madi. GG: Remember all the stuff Jesse did in classes? Both: Us, neither. GG: But, on a more serious note, we’ve always looked forward to graduation. It feels like the whole reason we’ve spent thirteen years here, but I’m sad it’s over. RL: “I can’t wait until I get out of this school,” we used to all tell each other. Being in a town this small, it was fun to imagine something new, meeting different people. It always used to frustrate me that no matter what activities I was doing, which class I was in, which parties I went to, everyone was always the same. But now as I’m standing here on one of our last days all together, I’m wishing these five years hadn’t gone by so fast. But I can take solace in having good memories of pretty much every one of you; that’s the positive of such a small class. It’s a long ceremony, though, and I don’t want to exacerbate it, so I guess I just want to wrap things up with a joke Ashley Sommerfeld absolutely insisted I say while up here: So two cannibals are eating a comedian, and one turns to the other and says, “Does this taste funny to you?” GG: I must say, having come here from a homeschooled childhood, expecting the high schoolers to all be bad people, you guys turned pretty awesome! You’re all excellent to hang out with in the art room, to break taquitos and drink Tims coffee with. I don’t have a lot of memories with you guys, but most of the memories I have are good ones. Those trips to get snacks, the stealthy smuggling of to-go mugs through the halls, the ceiling tiles, the art room music, the forestry field trips — there are a lot of good memories. Thanks, guys, for a great time in high school!

before any further progress can be made. And if the project goes ahead, Miller is looking forward to passersby knowing what the community complex has to offer. “It’s time to move up a step and bring people in off [the] main street,” said Miller.

From page 1 The Town of Creston and the owner of the Kal Tire property have also been consulted, and the sign could go on either the tire shop’s property or a small strip of adjacent town land. “All of that has been checked and looks promising,” said Miller. If the local services committee approves the proposal, it would then make a recommendation the Submitted RDCK board must approve The proposed location for a digital message board.

L. Rand Archibald

February 19, 1944 ~ July 14, 2013 Rand has passed from us after a sudden but short illness, in Vancouver, BC.

Rand was born in Ponoka, Alberta to Wallace (Bud) Archibald and Ruth Archibald (Madison). He spent his early years in Nanton, Alberta and high school in Kimberley, B.C. Rand had a varied career spending over twenty-five years in Cranbrook in a variety of positions including being City Administrator. A huge part of his life was the Armand Theatre, where Cranbrook folks will remember him as the innovative and enthusiastic manager. In 1990 he moved to Creston as the Campus Manager of the College of the Rockies. Rand was instrumental in establishing the Horticultural Tech program, the many online programs and the Greenhouse program as well as establishing the building of the present campus. Rand will be mostly remembered for his commitment to enriching the communities wherever he worked and lived. He was the epitomy of the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” An active member of Rotary for over forty years, he was named as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was particularly proud of his thirty year perfect attendance pin. Five times elected to the board of the Creston and District Credit Union, he served as Chairman for the past five years. Long involved with the Handi Capable Housing Society, he actively participated as a member of the board. He served as a board member of the Creston Economic Development Committee and xKootenay Employment Services. As the first GoGo Guy with the Creston GoGo Grannies, he was dedicated to the cause of supporting the Stephen Lewis oFoundation.

Rand was not only generous with his time in the community but also with his family. He loved to cook for family and friends, puttered with woodworking and photography and was inspirational in Barbara’s quilting creations. To his grandchildren he was a hero. Though his life may have ended too soon, it was a life complete in so many ways. He is survived by his soul mate and love of his life Barbara (nee Holditch); his son Chris and daughter Kelly McLean (Brian) and their mother Gail Carey; and grandchildren Michel Hetu, Brooklyn and Brandon McLean. He was stepfather to Colin Sivorot (Michelle) and their children Jordan, Ryan and Daniel, and to Ron Sivorot (Kristy) and son Griffin; his sister Janet O’Brien (Frank) and children Lori (Lowell) and Todd(Cathy) and their children; his sister Karen (Sid) Barton and children Terri (Perry), Nancy and Jamie (Jill) and their children; sisterin-law Brenda Stewart (Allan) and children Allison and Lindsay; mother-in-law Helen Holditch. Rand will be remembered by so many who called him a friend. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday July 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Creston Room of the Creston and District Community Complex with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating.
