one of our major fundraisers for the year East Kootenay Crime Stoppers. With your support we are hoping that the local media can help us get this impor-

tant information out to the citizens in the East Kootenay area. I have also attached a draft Public Service Announcement for your consideration. For your information a statistical sheet is provided with all statistics to July 2013 since May 1991 when the society was incorporated. That is over 22 years serving the East Kootenay area. All canvassers will be dressed in the orange and black jacket with Crime Stoppers Fund Raiser embroidered on the left front area along with photo ID around their necks. We encourage all citizens to ask to have a look at their ID if they so wish. They will be starting the fundraiser in the East Kootenay area almost immediately. Crime Stoppers is a “community based” program and as such, does not receive government funding or any funding from police budget monies, so the generosity of our citizens, Service Clubs and area businesses is integral to the continuing success of our program. We would like to thank all of the businesses that will be participating by offering discounts for services they have provided in our “coupon booklet” and encourage residents of the East Kootenay area to patronize the supporting businesses whenever possible. The cost of the booklet will remain at $28.00 including the GST, for over $1,000.00 in savings! The East Kootenay Crime Stoppers society would like to thank everyone in advance for their consideration in supporting our program and helping to keep our communities safe for all. Should anyone have any questions or concerns pertaining to this fundraising campaign or the canvassers please contact Eric Ausman – East Kootenay Crime Stoppers Coordinator at (250) 417-4234. We would like to express our sincere thanks for your help in this very important Crime Stoppers fundraiser and believing we can make a difference in our community.

3 Facts you need to Know About...

Smart Meter Opt-Outs

1. British Columbians have embraced wireless digital technology with 96% of hydro rate payers accepting Smart Meters. Smart Meters enable better management of the electricity grid, reduced costs, better law enforcement and opportunities for conservation. 2. For the 4% who don’t want a wireless digital meter, they now have two opt-out choices - keep their old analog meter until it quits working or take a new digital meter with the radio off. Those without a Smart Meter today must advise BC Hydro by December 1st if they want a new digital meter with radio off. 3. Those of the 4% who chose one of the opt-outs will be charged the cost of having their meter read manually plus the other costs associated with not taking a Smart Meter. The 96% of British Columbians with a Smart Meter will not be subsidizing those who chose to opt out. More details are available on the BC Hydro web site. Cranbrook now a Welcoming Community

Cranbrook is officially a Welcoming Community! The Immigrant Welcome Centre opened at 19A 9th Avenue South. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1 pm staffed by Settlement

Worker Anna Jordan. Grand opening is June 25th at 2 pm, the public is invited. The lead agency in Cranbrook and Kimberley is the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). Katherine

Hough, the coordinator for CBAL in Cranbrook, stated, “This is a natural fit for our organizations as we already offer immigrants English as a second language training. It is important to realize we offer these settlement services to anyone who has immigrated with in the past 10 years, not just those who are newly arrived.” The Immigrant Welcome Centre in Kimberley has been open for a couple of months and Settlement Worker Pam Bailie is pleased with the number of people who have already used the service. “We’ve helped people fill out forms for their school age children, accompanied a couple of individuals to vari-

Reminders

David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay—Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced funding for an important safety improvement project at the Canadian Rockies International Airport. The Canadian Rockies International Airport is receiving $33,715 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for a runway condition reporting system which will enhance safety by providing timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions. “The Canadian Rockies International Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism,” said MP Wilks. “This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in this region.” “The Canadian Rockies International Airport is a vital economic catalyst for the Kootenay Region,” said Wayne Stetski, Mayor of Cranbrook. “The City of Cranbrook appreciates that the federal government continues to invest in airports through ACAP. This equipment will enable staff to send surface condition reports directly to NAV CANADA from their vehicles, making the information available to pilots more quickly during winter conditions.” To date, through ACAP, the Canadian Rockies International Airport has received more than $8 million for 13 projects, including today’s announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 751 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/ replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. only 18 kilometers, but will experience of the many hardships that their own ancestors did in the 1850’s. Dress for the trek will be authentic pioneer clothing as sewn by many of the youth. Many adults will be along as well to act as ma’s, pa’s, aunts, uncle’s, grandpa’s and grandma’s. All will be reorganized into new families for the four day trek and encampment. The mode of transportation for the trek will be walking with fifteen handcarts used to carry the limited provisions needed for the four day trek. No modern conveniences will be permitted. During the trek, the youth will be involved with many actual duties that their pioneer ancestors had to deal with. These includes making their own bread, and butter, baking cornbread and biscuits on an open fire, and cooking their evening meals with dutch ovens. They will also experience visits by the local sheriff, a pony express rider, the native people, and famous Mormon historical characters. There will be square dancing, firesides, and story telling around the camp fires. Many hymns will be sung and played on various instruments that the early Mormon pioneers composed and sang on their treks. In the 1850’s, 62,000 Mormons walked across the American plains to the Salt Lake Valley as this was the least expensive way of reaching their new land and future homes. Many died along the way due to cold, lack of food, sickness, and other hardships. One of the first of these travellers to arrive in today’s Utah in the 1850’s was Brigham Young. He was instrumental in organizing the many treks to the Utah territory. The youth participating come from the many communities of the East and West Kootenays. Many are descendants of the early Mormon pioneers of the 1850’s. Two of the organizers of the event are Jason Mallard of Fort Steele, and his wife, Linnea Mallard also of Fort Steele. The handcart treks of the 1850’s to the Utah territory enabled the Mormon Church to develop and grow. These early treks are an important part of the history of the Mormon Church. Likewise, today’s treks bring to the young people of the Church an understanding of the faith that the early pioneers had in overcoming obstacles and in living their religion. The Cranbrook B.C. Stake includes all the communities of the East and West Kootenays including Trail, Creston, Castlegar and Nelson to the west, Golden and Invermere to the north, and Sparwood and Fernie to the east and to the Canadian border to the south.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

On the Shady Side of the Street

The last few days, summer has been treating us well in the East Kootenay - hot and sunny, with just a threat of thunder showers. With all the warmth and sunshine, the plants in our yards and gardens are thriving; especially sun-loving flowers are displaying all their splendor. However, what of those shady spots in the yard, such as that nook beside the garage or the corner under the shade trees? Some people think that having shade means not being able to garden. This is far from the truth as gardening in the shade presents unique opportunities. Shade gardens are not as thirsty - and often not as plagued by weeds - as locations in the full sun. This means, in general, they tend to require less maintenance and if you need to tend to it, even on a hot day it is more comfortable and without the danger of getting sunburnt. A couple of things you have to consider are how many hours of sunshine are you actually getting in this location and at what time in the day is the sun shining in this spot. Most shade-loving plants are happy with four to six hours of early morning sun, so an east facing spot is ideal. If you are looking to plant under or near a large tree, remember that the roots of those can deprive your plants of water and nutrition. It is a popular belief that plants struggle under trees because of the needles making the soil too acidic where in fact, it is more often the lack of moisture, nutrients and sunshine that is the culprit. You want to create the best possible growing environment for your shade garden, so another important step is to amend your soil. Dig in some organic matter, such as compost or manure, to help keep the soil moist. Watering each plant as you set it in and mulching immediately with an organic material such as bark or rough compost will help with holding moisture as well. The roots will get a good start if you use bone meal and transplanter fertilizer when you plant. Shade gardening offers the opportunity to use a whole new variety of plants. Think fifty shades of green with some colourful accents. One of the perennial favorites is the early spring blooming, old fashioned Dicentra, commonly called ‘Bleeding Heart’. Bleeding Heart plants will spread up to 30" in height and 24" in width and are very hardy, low maintenance, deer resistant, as well as relatively pest and disease free. They come in various colours and varieties to fit any planting scheme. Heuchera, which some people call ‘Coral Bells’ are mounding plants grown mostly for their colourful foliage, but they do send up exquisite spikes with small bell-shaped flowers. There are again many choices for colour and variegation. Astilbes come in a wide variety of heights, leaf and bloom colours. The foliage is always attractive and when the blooms start, each feathery plume has hundreds of tiny flowers and makes for excellent cut fresh flowers or dried in a natural bouquet. The list would not be complete without what is probably the most popular of all shade plants - the Hosta! This plant comes in a huge assortment of sizes, shapes and colour, from blues to greens, variegated shades of yellows to white, some with more textured leaves, and some with more upright leaves. When planting Hostas, be certain you check the tags and allow space for the height and spread of the each variety, as the sizes can be deceiving when they are still growing in the greenhouse. For even more colour, add some annuals, such as light-coloured impatiens, wax begonias or variegated coleus to your shade garden in the summer months. As you can see, the possibilities for a shady spot are almost endless and these are far from problem areas in your yard. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

Summer Fire Prevention & Emergency Preparedness

The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund would like to remind everyone to take extra care in their summer activities to avoid preventable burns and scalds. Barbecue - Propane & Natural Gas Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time

each year by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose. If there is a propane leak, it will release bubbles. If you do find a leak and there is no flame, do the following: 1. Turn off the gas tank and grill. 2. If the leak stops, have the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. 3. If it does not stop,

Buyers and Manufacturers of western red cedar and lodgepole pine poles and piling.

call the fire department. If you smell gas at any point while cooking, get away from the grill immediately and call the fire department. Never store propane tanks in buildings or gargages. If you store a gass grill inside during the winter, disconnect the cylinder and leave it outside. Never use a barbecue indoors or in an enclosed area such as a tent; doing so can cause a fire hazard and a build-up of poisonous carbon monoxide gas. Prevent cooking grease from dripping onto hoses

or propane cylinder. Grease build-up is a fire hazard. Barbecue - Grills Charcoal If you use a ‘charcoal chimney’ to start charcoal for cooking, use a long match to avoid burning your fingers when lighting the paper. If you use starter fluid, only use charcoal starter fulid and never add charcoal fluid when coals or kindling have already been ignited. Never use gaoline or any other flammable liquid to get the fire going. Keep charcoal fluid away from children and

heat sources. Position the grill well away from siding, deck railing and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Campfires Obey all fire laws, ordinances and regulations for your area. Never use gasoline to help ignite a campfire. Make sure that small children are placed well away from campfires. Keep campfires small and never leave them unattended. Soak hot coals with water to douse flames. Make sure your campfire is out before you leave.

of last century. In 1896 Trail, British Columbia was the home of the first smelter, which, in a much changed and more sophisticated format, still dominates the skyline and the local economy. Trail is also known for its significant Italian community. Before the end of World War II Italian immigrants were largely responsible for shaping the community’s social and cultural structure. Castlegar (population 8,992) is situated at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers in the

southwestern corner of the Kootenay Rockies. This relatively new (incorporated in 1966) mill town sits in a valley that is steeped in the heritage and culture of the Doukhobors, who migrated here in the early 20th century. Tucked into lush Selkirk Mountains, is the soulful community of Nelson, British Columbia. There is plenty of tranquil-
