day it had struck a deal with the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to build a new integrated traffic signal similar to the one on Kenney St., and will share the $350,000 cost. Once these new traffic lights get installed next spring, the final restriction on long truck traffic crossing northbound will be lifted as well. “Very, very good. Excellent work,” mayor David Pernarowski said, congratulating council and staff for their behind-thescenes negotiating with government. The Frank St. rail crossing has been closed since June 11 when CN Rail responded to an order from Transport Canada to block it following two near miss incidences between trains and trucks stopped on the crossing.
On July 23, the city installed signs along Frank St. to notify drivers about the continued restriction on long trucks. The signs were up and bagged temporarily until the government gave the official goahead, which it can do now that council has passed the recommendation. There was some discussion during the council meeting about enforcement. Councillor Bruce Bidgood asked if there are any special requirements about policing to make sure the remaining traffic restriction is being heeded. “That was not a requirement from Transport Canada,” Avison said. “They did not raise that issue in the discussion.” Councillor James Cordeiro asked if Transport Canada might

order the block again to CN if drivers disobey the new signs. “If it does become an issue of compliance with the signage, is there a possibility that it could be revoked and the section re-closed completely?” he said. Avison responded that, “If there were another incident, yeah, they would likely reissue the order.” Pernarowski added that spring 2014 is the most likely start date for construction of the new traffic lights, but that council will bring the matter up at a planned meeting with Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure officials in the fall. “We will certainly have some conversation about that at the UBCM convention... to see if there is any way to expedite [this process],” he said.

Old pulp mill land still not for sale By Quinn Bender
The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - The City of Prince Rupert may have to wait a couple more years before they can sell the potentially-lucrative lands at the old Skeena Cellulose Pulp Mill. A BC Supreme Court struck down Sun Wave’s petition to nullify the city’s tax sale and return the lands, but the Chinese-owned company has already filed a notice of appeal, that prohibits the city from putting the site up for sale. Should this latest appeal fail, Sun Wave has one final option with the Supreme Court of Canada. It’s unlikely the company will be granted that step as it’s very difficult to get leave for Canada’s highest court, but if they do it could be two years before the city can put the legal wrangle behind them. The city has disputed ownership of the lands on Watson Island since 2010. “Someone’s always got the right of appeal,” says Prince Rupert mayor Jack Mussallem, “and therein lies the problem. First and foremost, the city has won three times now. I think in the eyes of the law it’s
pretty conclusive.” Faced with the potential of a years-long wait before the appeals processes runs its course, Mussallem is pushing forward on a resolution with the BC Union of Municipalities to change legislation so litigation like this doesn’t prove so crippling to municipal budgets. He says the city has paid approximately $250,000 on each of Sun Wave’s appeals. In the meantime, Mussallem is also pursuing the BC minister responsible for municipal affairs to use provisions under the Municipal Enabling and Validating Act to force an end to Sun Wave’s appeals. “It’s gone through the legal process enough times, that it’s now starting to be considered an abuse of the legal process. Enough is enough.” In 2006 the City approved a multi-million-dollar tax break to help Sun Wave restart the shuttered pulp mill on Watson Island, but when the company stalled on their commitments the city seized the property for unpaid taxes, after amending the tax bylaw that paved the way for the tax break. The City wants to sell the land to a consortium of stakeholders for a new industrial park and port facility, but that can’t happen until SunWave’s lawsuits are resolved.

1991 for the Ministry of Transportation. That 1991 study concluded the town did not need a second crossing. The last study followed heavy construction in Kitimat during the 1980s. “The traffic in 1981 when Ocelot was being constructed was a much larger effect on our community than with the construction so far today,” he said, noting that traffic could have been backed up from the Service Centre to Haisla Hill. An attempt to refer the motion to following the council’s strategic planning meeting failed, and the motion to do the study passed, with Mario Feldhoff and Phil Germuth opposed.

KITIMAT - District of Kitimat staff will gather statistics on how well used Haisla Bridge is. Councillor Mary Murphy put forward the motion, in the hopes the information gathered could be brought to higher levels of government for future discussions on whether Kitimat should build a second river crossing. The talk of needing a second Kitimat River crossing has been rising over the past several months, after the issue went quiet following a 1991 report saying the town didn’t need one. But with construction and proposed more construction coming for across the river, the topic has been coming up again. Murphy said she’s been seeing, especially through social media, many people talking about a bridge. Not everyone was in favour of rushing into an investigation into a bridge. Mario Feldhoff said council should hold off for the time being. “What we’re doing is putting staff resources into this,” he said. “Is this more important than some other things we’ve discussed?”
He noted an upcoming strategic planning meeting with councillors regarding LNG impacts, and said they should talk about the issue further there, before committing staff time to the study. “We don’t have the money to paint the existing bridge right now,” he added. “We need to engage the province and put in our prioritization list.” Murphy noted that while the bridge has handled heavy loads of traffic for years, she’d still rather see a study for its current use. Director of Engineering Tim Gleig told councillors that there had been two studies for a second bridge, one in 1970 and another in

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert and Region Music Society raised $1,135 for the Charles Hays Secondary School Music Studio at the Summer Swing Dance held on Saturday, July 20. The 18-piece Muskeg Swing Band provided entertainment for the dance, lead by Peter Witherly. The group consists of saxophone, trumpet, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, and percussion players mainly from Prince Rupert. Three Terrace musicians travelled to Prince Rupert to lend a hand in Saturday’s show. The Prince Rupert and Region Music Society has held a number of fund-raising events for the Music Studio since the project was announced. The group will be able to utilize the studio once complete, allowing for more freedom in musical groups practicing schedules. Currently students in Prince Rupert’s school district and members of community music groups must all share the band room at Prince Rupert Middle School.

itimat’s first big promoter was Charles Clifford. He was an entrepreneur/politician who had great faith in Kitimat’s future. But who was this man who has a Kitimat street named in his honour? Mr. Clifford was an Englishman born in Sittingborne, Kent in 1842. His reverend father was a vicar whose religious ways may have contributed to his son’s rebellious nature, independent thinking, and decision to immigrate to Canada. After marriage to Harriet Young, a Catholic Irish woman, further aggravating his Anglican father, Clifford became a manager with the Hudson Bay Company, taking up a variety of posts in Canada’s

North. He had lots of experience in B.C’s Cassiar region. As a businessman, he was always investing in new opportunities. As an MLA, he became Early on he became firmly entrenched in a fierce politics. He was officially a Conservative and promoter of eventually became a three term Member of the the North and B.C. Legislature. As an MLA, he became a fierce in particular, promoter of the North and in particular, Kitimat. In those days you could ignore conflict of interest Kitimat. concerns. Twice, Clifford was an MLA for Cassiar and in 1903 he was elected in the new riding of Skeena, with 197 votes. He was a member of Premier Richard McBride’s government, earning an impressive 800 dollars per year as pay for being an MLA. Clifford was a landowner, purchasing land at the north west corner of Douglas Channel, including the present day area of Moon Bay, the barge terminal, and Alcan Beach. Despite his religious upbringing, Clifford had no problem profiting from liquor. He built the first Kitimat Hotel, a seven room structure near the Anderson Farm. According to Gordon Robinson in a 1956 Northern Sentinel article, liquor could be purchased by the glass, crate, or barrel. His wharf, which was likely built with government money, was located close to Moon Bay. Clifford gambled heavily on Kitimat becoming the terminus of the northern railroad from Ontario and the Atlantic coast. Besides his wharf and hotel, he helped develop plans for the
townsite at Minette Bay (the inner harbour). He was a partner in the KitimatCharles William Digby Clifford Omineca rail line proposal October 14, 1842 - May 10, 1916 and helped with obtaining improvements on the mail route trail through to Lakelse and Terrace. Two improvements were the cablecar ferries across the Kitimat, one of them at Chist Creek. In 1907 Clifford’s plans came crashing down when Prince Rupert, not Kitimat was chosen terminus for the Grand Trunk Pacific. By then, he was a 65 year old retired MLA. He lived on another nine years, dying in Victoria at the age of 74. Clifford’s greatest contribution was the confidence and vision he had for Kitimat’s future as a port. Unfortunately, he never did witness the success that he knew was inevitable. Today, Clifford’s assets within the valley are all erased. The wharf disappeared in one particularly heavy winter storm, his hotel was dismantled by a disapproving, pioneer rancher, George Anderson, and the mail route he helped to improve became obsolete and was swallowed by the encroaching rain forest. Charles Clifford’s picture is proudly displayed in the pioneer settlement section at Kitimat Museum and Archives. Pictures of his hotel and wharf are also available in the Kitimat Archives. Additional information is available through the Library at the Legislature in Victoria.

Twice daily flights on WestJet’s newest Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprop aircraft will be offered as of November 25, 2013, said the July 22 announcement, released by the Northwest Regional Airport and WestJet. The growth of natural resources and de-
velopment in the region drove the decision to bring in the new flights, said WestJet, which also noted the diverse economic projects around the region. “The Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society welcomes WestJet Encore as the newest partner providing service to
northwest British Columbia. The addition of Encore service completes another step in becoming the true Northwest Regional Airport,” said airport manager Carman Hendry. And this could mean lower prices for passengers. “It will bring prices
down, we’re seeing that in Fort St. John,” Diane Francis, owner of Uniglobe Courtesy Travel said, as other airlines price match. WestJet’s Fort St. John flight was one of
the first destinations announced for the Encore service launched in February of this year providing service to and from smaller communities in British Columbia. “We’re seeing some
great prices for Vegas and Mexico this winter,” Francis said. The biggest way this service is reducing costs is the elimination of overnighting in Vancouver, Francis explained.

You can recycle virtually all of your unwanted electronics. Gaming systems, calculators, electronic musical instruments and now e-toys. Environmental The Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) is a not-for-profi t extended producer responsibility program that responsibly recycles your unwanted electronic products. Running the Return-It Electronics™ program for EPRA is Encorp Pacific (Canada). Encorp manages the electronics stewardship program, with 152 Return-It™ collection sites across BC. As of August 1st, 2013, collection sites will also be accepting electronic toys for recycling. This will include remote control vehicles, handheld gaming devices, battery powered ride-on toys and more (for a full list of accepted products, visit return-it.ca/electronics/products). Because of the growing Return-ItTM recycling network, consumers and businesses in BC have an environmentally sound recycling option for all of their unwanted electronics. Drop-off at designated Return-ItTM sites is free of charge, as an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) is paid at the time the products were purchased. The EHF is used to cover the cost of responsibly recycling all unwanted electronics, and includes items purchased many years ago before the EHF existed. Since EPRA’s program began in 2007, more than 94,000 metric tonnes of unwanted electronics have been recycled. That’s over 20 kilograms per person that did not end up in our landfills and were not exported illegally to become someone else’s problem. Electronics collected in BC for recycling are sent to approved recyclers in North America where they are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. RCMP warning public of telephone scam By Martina Perry The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT The RCMP are reminding people to keep their personal information private following a recent telephone scam of a Prince Rupert resident. “The Prince Rupert RCMP wants to warn the community of this suspected phone scam to prevent any further victimization. One of the best precautions one can take is to never give out personal information over the phone, internet, or to people you don’t know or trust,” Const. Matt Ericson, spokesperson for the Prince Rupert RCMP, said. The Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment received a complaint on July 5 regarding a suspected swindle that cost the victim more than $150. A male resident of Prince Rupert told RCMP he received a telephone call from two individuals posing as affiliates to Microsoft. During the conversation the alleged scammers, which the victim said sounded Indo-Canadian in ethnicity, offered to “clean up” the person’s computer to help it run faster. The callers originally said the service was free of charge, but when they were granted remote
access to the computer they requested the complainant pay $159 to repair the issues they discovered. The victim paid the amount on a major credit card, and was told the process would take time to complete. After noticing changes hadn’t been made later that day, the complainant contacted RCMP. Ericson said there has only been the one scamming incident in Prince Rupert, however RCMP around the province have been advised of very similar complaints from members of the public. RCMP want to remind the public to never give any personal information over the phone, internet or unknown people. “In this day and age information is very valuable and sensitive in nature,” said Ericson. Citizens can report attempted frauds, actual fraud or suspicious correspondence to PhoneBusters toll free at 1 (888) 495-8501, by emailing info@phonebusters.com, or by fax at 1 (888) 654-9426. Anyone with information regarding this incident or similar ones is encouraged to call the Prince Rupert RCMP at (250) 6270700 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222TIPS (8477).

Heritage signs go up on Hwy 37 By Anna Killen
FURLONG CAMPGROUNDS
The Northern connector
TERRACE - It’s a bit easier to learn about the region’s history, thanks to four new signs erected on Hwy 37 last week. The Regional District of Kitimat Stikine erected the signs in order to bring awareness to some of the 11 heritage sites the district has added to its registry since the Heritage Conservation Service was created in 2005. The signs are for the four most northern heritage sites in the district. Three of the interpretive signs were paid for through a grant from the Heritage Legacy Fund under the Heritage Awareness Program. And a fourth, telling the history of the Yukon Telegraph Line & Trail, was funded by BC Hydro as compensation for the Northwest Transmission Line crossing the Yukon Telegraph Line in the Ningunsaw Pass near Bell II. “These four heritage interpretive sign will provide the resident and tourist traveler of this highway with a greater understanding and appreciation of the region and its history,” said Ken Newman, planner for the regional district. He details the signs below: “The first sign is for the Meziadin Fish Lad-

There has been some form of a fish ladder on the Meziadin River since 1916. The second sign is only about 40 km north on Hwy 37 at the Bell 1 rest stop and tells the story of Simon Gunanoot and his epic tale of living in the wilderness with his family for 13 years and avoiding capture for the alleged murder of two men in Hazelton. His grave site at nearby Bowser Lake is the heritage site recognized by the district. The third sign is located at a Hwy 37 rest

stop near Bob Quinn Lake. This sign tells the history of the Yukon Telegraph Line and relates the story of some of the men (including lineman Bob Quinn) who lived in remote cabins and maintained the line for the Dominion Telegraph Service. Associated with the line was a trail used by the men to service the telegraph line but it was also a vital transportation link to many a wilderness traveler long before there was a highway. Today Hwy 37 parallels much of the telegraph trail/line from Bell 2 to Eastman Creek. The final sign was located on the edge of the Stikine River in the
historic community of Telegraph Creek. Long before Dease Lake was a community Telegraph Creek was the hub in the northwest. As the head of navigation on the Stikine it was a jumping off point for those heading to the northern interior of BC. It was also part of a major route for many gold seekers during the Klondike Gold Rush and the community received its name as a result of one failed and one successful attempt to construct of a telegraph line.” More information about the heritage sites can be found in the culture and heritage section of the district’s website at www.rdks.bc.ca.

Hawkair flight declares an emergency By Martina Perry The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT Passengers flying from Vancouver to Prince Rupert on July 14 received a scare when the DeHavilland Dash-8 (DHC-8) aircraft they were travelling on declared an emergency and had to turn around and land in Vancouver. John Cottreau, manager of media relations at the Transportation Safety Board, said the Hawkair DHC-8 aircraft was about 600 feet above sea level after take-off from Vancouver when an issue arose. The plane’s torque, fuel flow and power turbine speed began to decrease on the No. 2 engine. With that, the DHC-8’s propeller auto-feathered. “Propellers can change their pitch so that they’re either gathering more air or less air. They can either slice into the air better which provides torque, or they can feather [where] they go into a neutral position and basically become fans,” Cottreau said. “They keep turning but they’re not producing power for the aircraft... to give lift.” The crew shut the engine down, and with the remaining one engine managed to climb to 1,500 feet above sea level. The crew complet-

ed the “failure in flight” checklist items and then declared an emergency. Cottreau said when an aircraft declares an emergency air traffic control clears the way for the plane to land, putting it as a priority over any other aircraft attempting to occupy the runway. “They got back to [the air traffic control] and were cleared to land in Vancouver where they landed uneventfully,” Cottreau said. After the plane returned to YVR maintenance found and replaced a faulty torque signal condition unit, and the aircraft was reentered into service. Cottreau said he doesn’t want to speculate what could have happened had the failure occurred later in the flight, but focus on the fact that the emergency landing was uneventful. Statistics by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada show there were 260 incidents where Canadian aircrafts declared an emergency in 2012. Aircraft incidents are circumstances where no one is injured.

Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 11th TERRACE, BC
New: Historic tour of old Pioneer Cemetary By Amara Janssens The Northern connector
TERRACE - The Heritage Park Museum is adding a new historical tour to the River Boat Days festival this year. For the first time, a guided historical tour of the Kitsumgallum Pioneer Cemetery (located off of the Nisga’a Highway) will be offered by the museum. The tours will take place during the afternoon of Sunday, August 11, and during the evening of Tuesday, August 27. Each tour will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour to complete. “This will be the first guided tour offered of the Pioneer Cemetery,” Veronika Kurz, community programmer with Heritage Park Museum said. Tour participants can expect to learn the stories behind well known graves, such as Terrace
founder George Little. The Mills family who was instrumental in the construction of Terrace’s first hospital is also buried in the cemetery, as well as the Franks, a prominent farming family. Kurz will also lead tour guests to one of the cemetery’s larger monuments, which is the site of the Serbian workers who passed away during the fatal Grand Trunk Pacific Tunnel accident on 1911. Additionally, Kurz said many of the people who owned buildings at the Heritage Park Museum are burried in the cemetery, such as the owners of the Kalum Lake Hotel and the dance hall. But the tour will also include a history of some of the lesser known graves. “There’s a lot of people there [at the Pioneer Cemetery] we don’t have information on,”
Kurz said. There are also stories around unmarked children and baby graves which were discovered while the edge of the cliff gave way. “The graveyard started shifting down towards the river,” Kelsey Wiebe curator of Heritage Park Museum said in describing how the unmarked graves were discovered. Terrace’s connections to the First and Second World Wars will also be shared. One such story is of Marino Scirelli, an Italian-Canadian soldier who fought for both Canada and Italy during the First World War. Kurz said he fought with the Italians for two years prior to joining the Canadians. Anyone wanting to attend should register ahead of time by calling the museum at 250-6354546. Tickets are $10, and water will be provided.

Riverboat Days 2013
Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 11th TERRACE, BC
Plenty of historic walking tours offered this year The Northern connector
TERRACE - Two historic walking tours showcasing Terrace’s exciting past are being offered at this year’s Riverboat Days. Both Heritage Park Museum and the George Little House will be celebrating Terrace’s past on Tuesday, August 6. The first tour of the day, is “My Town: A Walk with the Founder of Terrace,” offered by the George Little House at 1 p.m. Led by Yvonne Moen and Debbie Letawski, guests on this tour will be taken on an interpretive walk through downtown Terrace from the perspective of Terrace founder George Little. “It’s to keep the history of George Little alive,” Letawski said. Guests will also receive a copy of the booklet, “My Town: A Walk with the Founder of Terrace,” written by historian Cindy Hansen. Letawski said it will lead tour guests through an exciting history, beginning with the history of pre-emption, to the first saw mill, to the railroad coming through, all spearheaded by George Little. Tour guests will meet at the George Little House, before heading out to the police station, then to the lookout at the Old Skeena Bridge, and will end coming back towards the George Little House to discuss passenger train traffic. Letawski said tour guests should be pre-
pared to walk for a couple of hours that afternoon. She also said this year’s walk is extra special as it is gearing up for the next year’s celebration of 100 years of the George Little House. “The goal is to make people aware of 100 years,” Letawski explained. Things turning 100-years-old include the railway coming through Terrace, and the Kitsumkalum School, which will all be discussed on the tour. To reserve your spot, call George Little House at 250-638-8887. Tickets are $10. The second tour of the day is offered through Heritage Park Museum, and it is the second annual historical downtown walking tour. This tour will take place at 7 p.m. and will take approximately an hour and half. Tour guests will be guided throughout the downtown core of Terrace, to various historically significant buildings, Veronika Kurz, community programmer of Heritage Park Museum said. Kurz said a highlight of the tour will include a stop at the Old Meat Shoppe on Lakelse. This building used to be a Royal Bank, with a scandalous past of a bank robbery. The tour will begin at Brolley Square (the corner of Emerson and Lakelse) and will finish at the old Dog ‘n’ Suds on Lakelse Avenue. To register, call the Heritage Park Museum at 250-635-4546. Tickets are also $10.

TERRACE - Riverboat Days has something for everyone – concerts, parades, the chance to get thrown in fake jail. And it also has something for every level of athlete – serious slo-pitchers, neon-clad volleyballers, calm and collected horseshoe enthusiasts. And of course, spectating is always encouraged. Here’s a quick guide to the sporting events shaping up for this year’s Riverboat Days. For the mature men, there’s the 35 and over “B” Division Men’s Soccer tournament, starting 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and going to Aug. 5 at the Thornhill Jr. Secondary School field. This year’s theme is “The Older I Get, The Better I Was”. For 30 years the Mixed Slo-Pitch tournament has been a Riverboat Days mainstay. This year’s tourney goes from Friday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. to Aug. 5 at various parks across town. Car aficionados have a couple of options – Stock car racing at the Terrace Speedway Aug. 3 and Hot August

The annual Mixed Slo-Pitch tournament is a main fixture of Riverboat Days, with teams coming to Terrace from all over the northwest. Nites Drag Racing at the airport Aug. 4 and 5. Rugby 7s – a faster game of rugby – will be going off at the Northwest Community College field Aug. 3. The Northcoast Nightmares roller derby team are hosting a roller dome at the arena Aug. 3, complete with old-school quad skates and a killer soundtrack. Beach volleyball on the sandy Mr. Mikes’ parking lot is known to attract a crowd – catch this on Aug. 4 and 5. One new event is the Horseshoes Doubles Tournament, at the horseshoe pits on the bench Aug. 4.
Even if you can’t skate, you can watch skateboarders at the 14th annual Ruins Skateboard Comp at the Terrace skatepark Aug. 4. Mid-week take a jaunt to Water Lily Bay to see the dragon boaters “Get Dragon Boating” Aug. 7. The final weekend sees a hands-on open house at the Rod & Gun Club in partnership with the Whiskey Jack Archers. And the Terrace Peaks Gymnastics Club asks “Are you up to the Challenge?” at the second annual Community Fitness Challenge and Display Aug. 10.

Terrace honours Les with silver By Anna Killen
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - In provincial soccer, what was formerly called the Boys Provincial B Cup is now the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup – in honour of Terrace’s late Les Sinnott, who was passionately involved in provincial soccer, who passed away last year. And seeing as this is the first year the tournament was played in his honour, it’s only fitting that a Terrace soccer team would do well for the first time since 2009. Terrace’s U17 Boys soccer team travelled to Prince George for the tournament, held July 4 7, alongside many other Terrace teams and more than 800 players from around the province. The team, who has been together since they were U11’s, hadn’t medaled at a tournament since 2009, where the team won gold. But this year was different. The tournament started off the round robin with a game against Vernon on Thursday, which they won 2-0. On Friday, the team took it 2-1 to West Vancouver, a solid game against a solid team. On Friday, they went up against Surrey – one of the best teams in the tournament. The highlight for Terrace came when they tied the game 1-1, but then Surrey scored off a bouncing ball in the six-yard box to win it 2-1. Next up, the team met Nelson, which they shut out 2-0, before falling to Juan de Fuca in the final game of the tournament. “Our boys were pretty well

Especially considering that this could be their last year as a team – they are eligible to play one more year, but Struyk said it remains to be seen if there is enough interest. And as is typically the case for northwest teams, the tournament itself was a learning experience. “One of the challenges we have up here is we don’t get a lot of competitive games against other teams,” he said. Struyk’s co-coach Steve Turner
points out that when Terrace teams travel to provincials, teams from down south have played a full season with 40 - 50 games whereas our teams have only played six or seven. Turner’s proud of his team for the success and appreciative of the support system – coaches and team managers – who’ve been together since the beginning. “All the players did really well,” he said. “It’s a whole team effort.”

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Rockies U16 team travelled to Clearwater from July 5 to 7 for the BC Provincial Championships. Among the tournament’s highlights, the Rockies’ fourth game was against the Chilliwack Vipers, the BC representatives for the Western National championships, who were undefeated until Kitimat beat them 4-3. While the Vipers would go on to win gold in the A/B Division, the win against the B.C. reps was big for the Kitimat boys, and a big moment in the tournament. As for the general results, in game one Kitimat fell just one point behind the Merritt Stars, finishing 5 to 6. The MVP was Joel DeMelo. In game two Kitimat thoroughly beat the Prince George Timberwolves, 15 to 5. MVP for the game was Marcus DeMelo. Game three, The Fleetwood Marlins finished 18 to Kitimat’s 2. MVP was Cole Carriero. Game four was the famous match against the Chilliwack Vipers, 4-3 for Kitimat. MVP was

PRINCE RUPERT - Ian Robinson overcame a six-shot deficit heading into the final round to win his third straight Prince Rupert Golf Course Men’s Club Championship on Sunday. Robinson opened up with a disappointing seven-over 77 on Saturday but fired a 72 on Sunday to defeat first round leader Rob McDonald, who struggled to an 82 in the second round, by four strokes. “I didn’t have a very good day [on Saturday] but I thought if I could shoot in the 60s I might have a chance ... but Rob had a tough day,” Robinson said. Robinson had cut McDonald’s lead to two by the turn but it was a double bogey on No. 10 that was the turning point. Robinson’s drive went into the trees and he was forced to take a penalty. He overdrove the green and a mediocre chip left him with a 20-footer for double bogey. “Yeah, that 20-foot save was big. Sometimes a double bogey still feels good ... it could’ve been worse.” Robinson tied it up on No. 11 with a birdie after McDonald bogeyed. “After that it was anyone’s game,” Robinson said. “I was up one by 15 and I made birdie but Rob double-bogeyed putting me up by four ... after that it was pretty much mine to lose.” Cody Forsell signed off on rounds of 79 and 76 to pick up third spot. Ten-handicapper Sandy Anderson carded a final round 78, net 68, to edge Teru Yamamoto, a 12 handicap, by two strokes to capture the Low Net Championship. Arnold Parnell, a 21 handicap, fired back-to-back 91s to finish in third place.

Is Hinchcliffe Canada’s next athlete of the year? By Bruce Penton
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
Hockey great Sidney Crosby, Olympic soccer star Christine Sinclair and PGA Tour player Graham DeLaet will garner their share of votes this December as Canada’s athlete of the year, but a relatively new name – James Hinchcliffe – will be part of the mix, too. In fact, the Indy Car driver, already the winner of three races in 2013, could run – sorry, drive – away with the award. It’s been years since Canada has had a strong presence in Indy Car racing. Paul Tracy was one of the world’s best at one time and Greg Moore had great potential but he died too soon. Before that, the Villeneuves, Jacques and Gilles, were among the world’s best. Now, it’s Hinchcliffe. The Oakville, Ont., native was the Indy Car Series’ rookie of the year in 2011 and was signed by Andretti Autosports to replace Danica Patrick in the Go Daddy.com car on the circuit. “I hope I can fill her heels, cracked Hinchcliffe. He has, and more. Driving the No. 27 car for Andretti (the same car number driven by the two Villeneuves), Hinchcliffe won two of the first four races in 2013 – the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla., in March and the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy in Brazil in May. Just to prove those two wins weren’t flukes, he captured his third checkered flag June 23 at the Iowa Corn Indy 250. He’s tied for the lead in wins this season with Scott Dixon, who won three races in a row in July. Hinchcliffe would have loved to thrill his hometown fans with a win at one of the two races in Toronto in mid-July, but he came up short, finishing seventh in the first race and 21st the next day when a stuck accelerator got the team off to a bad start. Still, mark down 2013 as the year Hinchcliffe became a household name in the world of autosports. “It’s so cool to see how far we’ve progressed and more and more fans are taking notice and they’ve got a Canadian to cheer for and that’s what it’s all about, Hinchcliffe told Jonathan Brazeau of Sportsnet. The next time Hinchcliffe presses down hard on the accelerator will be Aug. 4 at the Honda Indy at Lexington, Ohio, going for victory No. 4. Canadian driver of the year? For sure. Athlete of the year? Three wins in one year should probably be enough. Four would lock it up.

Here’s a look at the damage caused to the helicopter at the Fortune Minerals camp earlier this month.
Helicopter shot up at camp By Josh Massey THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - People who knew the Lakelse Air pilot who suffered what the police report called a “severe emotional breakdown” say they didn’t see it coming. The company’s operation manager said that the employee was also a close friend. “He’s an amazing pilot, I’ve known him for a long time,” said James Carr. “Nobody saw this coming. He’s one of my very good friends so it makes it even harder. This is something that came out of left field.” On July 12, the Dease Lake RCMP detachment flew officers into a Fortune Minerals exploration camp in the Klappan Mountain area, approximately 103 km southeast of Dease Lake, to respond to a call about a pilot shooting a gun at a helicopter owned by his employer, reported police July 18. The man, who according to police had veteranlevel 7,000 hours flying experience, was armed with a shotgun and safety flares, and rode an ATV up and down the camp air strip with witnesses saying they observed him shooting the gun several times at the helicopter and attempting to set it on fire, said police. Corporal Brian Blair, who was one of two police officers flown in to the remote camp, said that there was no violence done except to the equipment, but that there were questions surrounding the shotgun. “It’s part of the ongoing investigation,” Blair said about the fact that the pilot had a gun in the tent with him.

“From my understanding, there is only supposed to be one firearm in camp, and that’s part of the investigation.” Blair said that it isn’t unusual for people going into the backcountry to bring a gun for safety. “You know there’s grizzlies and black bears with cubs so it’s not unusual for people to have firearms up here,” he said. “We’re trying to understand it. The pilot is very well respected,” Blair said. The corporal had to ask him several questions on-site and during the flight back, and he said it was a challenge to understand what exactly had caused the unforeseen breakdown. “There was parts of it that was logical but there was the disconnect between what happened and his logic,” Blair said. “It was really an odd situation, because he seems very articulate and very intelligent very hard working, very responsible, but what he was talking about wasn’t tied in to what happened.” Officers arrested the 37-year-old Ontario man without incident and transported him to the Dease Lake RCMP detachment for a full assessment of any medical needs by a medical practitioner. He continued to be assessed by doctors at the end of last week. The man was released from police custody with a promise to appear in court August 27 in Dease Lake with a proposed charge of mischief, said police. Police continue to investigate and said firearmrelated charges may be considered as well.
