News We are all addicted to something health of your children. In the months before I butted out for good I only smoked outside, but it still felt wrong. I was a Mom. My kids needed me. And I wanted so badly to quit. It took four tries but I finally put out my last cigarette 23 years ago. I don’t miss it. For years I enjoyed the occasional glass or two of wine, especially at the end of a challenging day. After the boys grew up and left home I fell into a bit of a funk. I started having a glass or two of wine several evenings a week and soon it became a nightly ritual. Darcy had quit drinking about the time I quit smoking, so I often drank alone. Of course, that is seldom a healthy sign. Some nights the two

It’s usually women who worry that their biological clock is ticking when they desire to have a family. However, men should also be concerned about their own clock. The age of the new father can have an effect on the health of their children. It’s important that if you are a new father-to-be, you be fit physically and mentally to give your children the best chance of a healthy life.

So I quit. In November I will have gone five years without a drink. I think of it now as the greatest gift I ever gave myself. if I still think I need a bowl of popcorn when I return then I can have it. By the time I return the craving, that desperate gnawing need for a numbing escape, is usually gone. I find I have bid it a gentle adieu somewhere along the road. I have learned the best thing we can do is simply stay with the discomfort of our thoughts and not try to numb them at all. Thoughts rise like blobs in a lava lamp only to break into pieces and drop away again. If we know this, we can simply learn to observe our thoughts as they rise with curiosity instead of panic, knowing they will disappear the same way they arrive. We don’t need to fix them. We don’t need to escape from them. We don’t need any outsource to distract us. I suppose

turn to whenever I’m under stress. I can go for weeks eating healthy, only to find myself stuffing my face with a bowl of heavily buttered popcorn or a large dish of ice cream whenever the crap hits the fan. Like smoking or alcohol, it never makes me feel better in the end, but I always think it will. Since I don’t seem to be the type that can “cut back” but instead needs to quit cold turkey, food has been the most difficult addiction to kick. After all, everyone has to eat right? But of course, I don’t have to eat junk food. And let’s be honest. Junk food kills you as surely as heroin, it just takes longer. I try to make myself go for a long walk whenever I get stressed instead of throwing food at the problem. I tell myself

A mind that drops people into judgemental slots based on appearance or circumstance or religion and then feasts on the hit of superiority these thoughts provide is just as addicted as a heroin addict, even if the outcome isn’t as deadly. I never did any hard-core drugs, but for almost 14 years I was a slave to nicotine. I started smoking in my early teens. I quit while I was pregnant with our two sons, only to start up again after they were born. I would probably still be smoking if our oldest son hadn’t had asthma. The loss of Glee star Cory Monteith at the age of 31 to an overdose of heroin and alcohol is heartbreaking. Here is a guy who had it all by North American standards; a flourishing career, a beautiful girlfriend, money, fame and what promised to be a brilliant future. All this and a humble personality that always took time out for his fans and never seemed to let fame go to his head. Some people are angry that in one misguided evening he accidentally threw it all away. But addictions are like that. Who among us isn’t addicted to something? Who hasn’t tried to outsource their pain, disappointments or insecurities? Who doesn’t look for ways to soften the raw edges of life? It might not be

No preference for local ferry bidders By Tom Fletcher Black Press BC Ferries has received approval to construct three new medium-sized vessels, and the B.C. government is leaving it up to the corporation to decide where they are built. “Certainly we’d be very supportive of the ships being built in British Columbia,” Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Tuesday. “Government does not have the purview to dictate to BC Ferries who can and cannot participate in their procurement process. That’s internal to BC Ferries.” BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee announced approval Tuesday to replace two old ferries scheduled for retirement in 2016. The 48-year-old Queen of Burnaby

serves the Comox-toPowell River run, and the 49-year-old Queen of Nanaimo sails on the Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands circuit. BC Ferries announced Tuesday it will invite qualified bids for two replacement ships with capacity for up to 145 vehicles and 600 passengers. A third with room for 125 vehicles and 600 passengers will be used for peakseason service on the Gulf Islands run and replacement duty when the other two are undergoing maintenance. Qualified Canadian and international shipyards will be invited to bid, with a contract to be awarded by January 2014. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said the focus is on cost savings and standardization of vessels, many of which now have differ-

ent deck heights and dock requirements. The last major contract was for three Coastal-class ferries, completed by a German shipyard in 2007 and 2008. They now serve the main Vancouver Island runs. Corrigan said BC Ferries will examine whether new ships can be run on liquefied natural gas instead of diesel. That increases the construction cost, but fuel savings are projected to pay for themselves in as little as eight years. The Coastal Ferries Act requires the BC Ferries Commissioner to approve capital expenditures. The order

for these ferries specifies that construction must be open to a pool of bidders, and that food and retail services on board must not be subsidized by fare revenue. Brian Carter, president of Seaspan Shipyards, which operates two facilities in North Vancouver and Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt, said the announcement is “great news for B.C. Ferries and great news for the overall marine industry in the region.” Seaspan is currently five months into design work, with construction due to start next spring or summer on a contract

to build vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard. The company will assess its capacity to take on such a B.C. Ferries contract once it determines the specifics of the request, Carter said. While Seaspan has never built an LNG powered vessel, Carter said the manufacture of LNG equipment would likely take place off site. In terms of competing against foreign firms, he said the federal shipbuilding program is giving the company and the B.C. industry in general more competitive capabilities every day. “True efficiencies [will be] gained once we start constructing vessels.”

Kitimat ocean research set for oil tankers Tom Fletcher Black Press

A little-noticed federal ocean monitoring program around Kitimat is the clearest signal yet that the federal government is preparing the region for crude oil tanker traffic, Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver says. Weaver was catching up on his scientific reading after the B.C. election when he stumbled on a line – “almost a throwaway” – in the April issue of Canadian Ocean Science Newsletter. “A major initiative in planning is the complementary measures project for the area surrounding Kitimat British Columbia to support planned oil traffic,” it says. Government scientists who developed the system in the Gulf of St. Lawrence say it is to help “search and rescue, oil spill response and to ensure safe and navigable waterways.” Weaver said the project goes well beyond research, and represents a major ongoing budget commitment by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to forecast ocean con-

ditions for oil tanker traffic. “My conclusion is, come hell or high water, the intention of the feds right now is to ship bitumen to Asia through Kitimat,” Weaver said in an interview. “Whether it be through rail or through pipeline, it’s going to happen, and I don’t think that British Columbians are getting the whole picture here.” Environment Canada spokesman Mark Johnson issued a statement confirming the program was funded in the 2012 federal budget, under the government’s “responsible resource development” initiative. Its purpose is to

improve the scientific understanding of diluted bitumen products and to improve operational capabilities to provide timely scientific assessment in the event of an oil spill. “The Government of Canada is increasing research into n o n - c o nv e n t i o n a l petroleum products to fortify Canada’s marine prevention, preparedness and response capabilities. “In terms of ocean forecasting, Environment Canada Meteorological Service of Canada will bring specific contributions to the this overall goal in the provision of high-resolution surface winds forecasts along the complex waterways from Kit-

imat to Hecate Strait area, as winds play

an important role as input to oil spill modelling assessment.” A federal assessment panel is preparing recommendations for the federal cabinet on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project, which would deliver diluted bitumen from Alberta to the Kitimat port. Weaver said Ottawa’s apparent rush to export heavy crude increases the pollution risk on land and ocean, and also works against development of a petrochemical industry in Canada.

Oh, the joys of summer! “Yippee, it’s vacation time! Time to get away, time to relax, time to enjoy life! Let’s have fun, let’s do something.” This is the time of year when most families seize the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, especially work. It is a chance to unwind, to unload the stress of life and get prepped for another year of busyness. Now, some may wonder, “Is it good Christian behaviour to take vacations?” I was thinking about all of this the other day as I was driving down the road, pulling an RV. And I recalled that my parents could usually only manage a day between chore times or if they were blessed enough to be able to find someone to do the chores for them, they could stay away till later in the evening. These ‘one day’ vacations were precious to them but I am sure that such short breaks did little to relieve stress and allow them to relax. For them vacation was simply a matter of doing something different, a break from the routine. Why do we all so desperately need time away from work, from our busy lives? Why do we need to ‘destress’ and rejuvenate ourselves?

PARSONS PEN

BY GERRIT APPERLOO What is it about our life style that makes this such a critical thing? We could write books about that, couldn’t we? In fact, there are books dealing with just that issue and some of them contain excellent suggestions. As I was pondering these questions, I remember reading about Jesus taking a break from the stress and the busyness of life as well. John 6:15 records one time when the people were plotting to force Jesus to be an earthly king and “he withdrew again to a mountain by himself”. Jesus took a vacation from what

he was engaged in, took the time to regroup, to become revitalized, to get refocused on the true course of his life. And if Jesus did this, perhaps taking a vacation is a very Christian thing to do. I know that to take time to rebuild family relationships is a good thing, though these relationships should not have deteriorated in the first place. But then, that is the stress of life interfering with our good intentions, isn’t it? But while Jesus took time away from the crowds and spent time just with his close friends, his disciples, or spent time just by himself, Jesus also did one other thing: he spent time in prayer with his Father in heaven. If we accept that vacations from work and normal activities of life is a Christian thing to do, then let me also ask this question: “Are you also doing the other Christlike thing of building yourself up spiritually by spending time in prayer and devotions?” Taking vacations is fun and often helps in eliminating stress. But taking the time to do a spiritual retreat, even if it is just in your own back yard, is much more effective. Have a great summer!

Farmers’ market coupon program expands A successful program that provides lower-income families, pregnant women and seniors with coupons for locally produced food is receiving an additional $2 million investment, Health Minister Terry Lake announced recently in Kamloops. “We know that having access to healthy, fresh foods makes a huge difference in health,” said Lake. “Unfortunately, for some British Columbians, it can be hard to access these nutritious necessities. This program will help us improve the health of B.C. families by offering improved access to locally produced food for those most in need.” The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program runs from July through October 2013 and is administered by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. The program offers $15 worth of coupons each week to individuals and families enrolled in the nutrition and skills building programs offered by community agencies associated with each participating market - participants must be enrolled with these community agencies to

income families.” This year, the program has added 13 new markets for a total of 34 participating markets located throughout the province. Coupons are treated like cash at the participating markets and can be used to purchase a variety of B.C. food products including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, dairy and herbs.

“This program had great success last year, and we are thrilled that it is expanding this year, with additional markets and communities participating,” said Jon Bell, president, BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “The program is really a win-win, for both local producers and local families.” The program is expected to support about 1,300 families and 400 seniors in 2013 and will continue to expand. The $2 million in funding provided through the Provincial Health Services Authority in 2013 builds on an initial $2 million investment in 2012. The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets accepts joint applications from farmers’ markets and community agencies on a yearly basis for the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program. “We are so pleased to be participating in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program,” said Suzan Goguen, executive director with the Seniors Outreach Society. “Each week, our seniors are able to use the coupons to visit their local market, where they can access fresh, nutritious food and engage with their

Green MLA on coal and controversy

B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER

After climate scientistturned-Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver had a taste of debate in the B.C. legislature, I asked him for his impressions on that and other issues. Excerpts from that discussion: TF: You did a study comparing burning all the world’s coal reserves and all oil reserves, showing how big coal really is. The federal government says that when you add up what’s actually being used in North America, carbon emissions from coal are about 30 times more than from oil. Now we have a symbolic coal export ban in Vancouver, which doesn’t apply to Port Moody or Point Roberts or Prince Rupert. Do you think there’s any significance to this? AW: There is no question that the biggest issue around is coal, because coal use is on the rise world-wide. Not in the United States, because they’re converting [power production] to natural gas. This is why American producers are saying, let’s ship it to Asia. California says no, Oregon says no, Washington says no. Vancouver says no, British Columbia, not sure. It’s pushing us to start thinking about what I think is going to be the

greatest industrial revolution the world has ever seen, which is transformation of energy systems away from our combustion approach, which is essentially what we’ve been doing since we were in caves. We’ve gone from burning wood to now fossil wood, and fossil plants and fossil algae, to a much more modern era of production of energy through natural means, solar, wind, geothermal etc. TF: Liquified natural gas. The NDP says they are absolutely in favour of that now. AW: I have questioned

the economics of it from day one. There’s a market differential that exists now. There’s that small window because Japan is moving from nuclear to natural gas. But we’re way behind everyone else. TF: Thirty years ago, Japan played Australia and B.C. off for metallurgical coal. Those northeast B.C. coal mines are back up and running again, but you’re seeing a similar thing here? AW: Yes. And if we start shipping natural gas to Asia … the Asian price comes down, the North American price goes

up. British Columbians haven’t been told that. TF: How has the legislature session been for you? AW: I sit there and watch the two parties. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. Rhetorical question, condescending answer. And I hope more British Columbians watch this, because this needs to change. And I think it can change. TF: The NDP opposition decides when you and Delta South Independent Vicki Huntington get your occasional moments in question period?

AW: Yes, and if I’ve asked it’s been no problem. TF: Grudgingly no doubt. If the NDP had their way, the closest Green Party member would be in Holland. AW: [Laughs] Yes. Certainly not in North America. There’s this sense of entitlement within the NDP to the ‘green’ vote. And I sense that the B.C. Liberals very much like our existence, as being not NDP. The reality is, we take as many Liberal votes, if not more. It’s because what it means to be ‘green’ has

moved out of what the NDP view as green, which is a tree hugger. It’s kids going to school, talking about conservation, and going home to talk to their parents. That’s where our votes are coming from. TF: Are you going to be found standing in front of a coal train any time soon? AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

1,801 guns, 30,700 rounds secured in June amnesty B.C.’s latest monthlong gun amnesty found its mark, with 1,801 firearms, 155 other weapons and approximately 30,700 rounds of ammunition turned in for destruction, furthering public safety throughout the province. The goal of the program, which ran through June, was to encourage British Columbians to safely dispose of unwanted weapons that might otherwise fall into the hands of criminals, children or others, potentially leading to tragic consequences. “Regardless of whether a weapon’s history is distinguished, shady or simply unknown, gun amnesty means its future is secure,” said Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton. “Ultimately, all of these weapons are destroyed. They’re not at risk of being found in a drawer by a child, or of ending up on the street after a break-in. I want to commend police and British Columbians for making this latest program a success in furthering public safety throughout our province.” British Columbians were encouraged to surrender weapons - ranging from high-powered firearms and crossbows

to pellet and replica guns - as well as ammunition, by calling their local police to attend, secure and remove the items. The latest results show the sustained value of periodic gun amnesty programs. Back-to-back programs in 1997 and 1998 yielded an average of 2,500 firearms and 100,000 rounds of ammunition. In 2006, the number of firearms rose to more than 3,200, plus another 725 unwanted weapons, while the number of rounds was relatively stable at 96,500. As with past campaigns, some interesting items were turned in, including: • 1,026 rifles, 394 handguns and 380 shotguns. • A machine gun received by Kelowna RCMP. • Historical firearms, including a Lee-Enfield .303 rifle from World War II. • Bayonets from the 1800s, turned in to Ridge Meadows RCMP. • A well-publicized military missile more than six feet long, turned in by the relative of an individual who reportedly kept it as a souvenir of a tour of duty overseas. The program, endorsed and announced by the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police in

February, was led by RCMP E-Division on behalf of the provincial RCMP, with support from B.C.’s municipal police departments. “The misuse of firearms can take many forms,’” said Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens commanding

officer of the RCMP in British Columbia. “Whether it involves a child’s curiosity, a domestic incident, a theft or some other turn of events, the impact is too often instantaneous and tragic. By calling police and arranging for safe disposal of their

unwanted weapons and ammunition, thousands of British Columbians have helped to prevent potentially dozens of dangerous incidents.” Quick Facts • The amnesty did not apply to weapons or firearms used to commit crimes.

• The RCMP, which is responsible for the Canadian Firearms Program, provides direct operational and technical firearms-related support to law enforcement across Canada. • According to the RCMP, about 5.3 per cent of British Colum-

bians have a firearms licence, slightly below the national average of 5.7 per cent. • StatsCan reports that in 2011, the last year for which a figure is available, 158 homicides (27 per cent) in Canada were committed with firearms.

Where to go, what to do. Studio Theatre plans plays for new season Tara Sprickerhoff The Williams Lake Studio Theatre’s performance of Over the River and Through the Woods entertained audiences and gained recognition from adjudicator Dean Paul Gibson at this year’s provincial Mainstage theatre festival in Kamloops earlier this month. The festival featured 10 awardwinning plays from

around the province in a nine day theatreintensive event. Williams Lake came away from festival with an adjudicator’s merit award for “Continuing the Tradition of Most Improved,” as well as honourable mentions for Best Supporting Actor for both Curt Sprickerhoff and Michael Rawluk who played the grandparents in the heartwarming production.

Now the theatre is preparing for its next season which will feature four plays: The Big Five-Oh, written by Brian Mitchell and directed by Brad Lawryk, will open the season, with performances between November 6-9 and 13-16. This funny play tells the story of a man who is about to turn 50, his family, and his terrible week. Auditions will be

held late August. Glengarry Glen Ross written by David Mamet and directed by Shane Tollefson will follow the season opener. Set in a Chicago real-estate office, the script follows the story of salesmen desperate to make a sale. Urinetown, the Musical, a hilarious play set in a world where you have to pay to pee, will be onstage sometime in March.

The musical, written by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollman and directed by Jay Goddard, is a musical satire that will keep audiences laughing. The final play of the season, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and directed by Becky Stickland will transport audiences into the early 1800s and the trials and tribulations of young women looking for love.

WORKING WITH ONE REALTOR = COMMITMENT!

Have something to sell?

If you are planning to purchase a home, you will be faced with many decisions. Some buyers like to leave their name with three or four salespeople with the thought of it being an advantage to have a number of people working for them. In real estate, this is generally a very ineffective approach. When too many people are involved the sense of total commitment between Realtor to Buyer, and between Buyer to Realtor can get lost in the shuffle. Choose one Realtor whom you feel comfortable with and who will understand you and have compassion and empathy for your particular situation. By giving your commitment to the Realtor, he/she will work with enthusiasm and diligent efforts to successfully complete your transaction.

A dryer and the attached vent system require regular cleaning and maintenance. Lack of such regular cleaning and maintenance has been identified as causing fires. Improper dryer venting also poses a carbon monoxide risk on gas supplied dryers. The dryer vent system removes moisture and the gas by-products from your appliance to the outdoors. When a dryer/venting system is clogged with lint, air flow is restricted, your dryer then has to work harder which leads to overheating. As the dryer ducts remove lint and moisture from clothes, not all of the lint is captured by the screen or makes it to the outdoors; this builds up on the sides of the vent system and eventually dries to a hard material. This material attracts more lint, where it eventually creates a restriction that leads to overheating, potentially resulting in a fire. It is recommended that dryers and all fuel burning appliances are maintained or serviced on an annual basis at least, or as per the Certified Appliance instructions by a Licensed, Qualified Gas Contractor. Day of Caring helps kids LeRae Haynes A local business faced off with a local non-profit recently when a team of five from Williams Lake and District Credit Union arrived at the Boys and Girls Club as part of United Way’s Day of Caring. The Credit Union staff members, along with Boys and Girls Club staff and Melissa Newberry from United Way in Williams Lake, took on a project that increased the space available for kids to work on their bicycles and do shoprelated projects. Days of Caring is a United Way program that invites businesses to donate staff hours to do a project for a non-profit organization. These projects can include things like painting, gardening, installing playground equipment or picnic areas, building fences or assembling food hampers. When Kimberli Tugnum, Cathy Albrechtsen, ToniRae Myckatyn, Daryl Cyr and Lyla Floberg from the Credit Union arrived at the Boys and Girls Club, they took on the cleaning and organizing of a large storage room. “That room is where all our equipment, including bikes, are stored and it was a big mess,” Boys and Girls Club executive director Matt Neufeld explained. “We made a plan ahead of time and with everyone there to help, we pulled everything out, sorted and organized – now there’s space for staff to work with kids on shop projects.” Neufeld said that it was hard work, but very successful and informative.

Williams Lake and District Credit Union staff members Kimberli Tugnum, Cathy Albrechtsen, ToniRae Myckatyn, Daryl Cyr and Lyla Floberg joined David Faubert, Stefanie Hendrickson and Matt Neufeld from Boys and Girls Club and Melissa Newberry from United Way in Williams Lake for a Day of Caring project. Photo submitted “Days of Caring also let us share what we’re all about and promote what we do in the community,” Neueld said. “United Way supplied lunch for everyone and we all sat and talked about what we’re all about. The Credit Union learned about our preteen programs, our Keystone Leadership group and our Sprockids biking program for kids.” Creating and strengthening relationships with the business community can only be a positive benefit to kids, said Neufeld, who added that community support helps them offer free programs. “Our motto is ‘no kid is left behind’ and we believe that every kid deserves a place to go,” he explained. “Kids who face challenges, barriers and difficulties need that more than anyone and the Boys and Girls Club is a place where everyone

can come.
“Our staff members are energetic, enthusiastic and caring and we have the time and the facilities to offer these kids, where others may not.” He said that it’s very positive when influential adults provide mentorship and guidance to kids. “In our youth centre we don’t always have organized activities – if a kid comes and wants to do something, we do our best to accommodate them,” he continued. “For us, the process is always more important than the outcome, and some great conversations are initiated during casual activities.” Establishing positive relationships with youth isn’t a straightforward, easy process that happens overnight, Neufeld said. He said that when kids feel at home at Boys and Girls Club it means there are adults there they can trust.

“Trust is huge with these kids and this takes time,” he noted. “They know that there are boundaries and lines here and that they are safe. We can also connect them with other resources that can help.”
The next Boys and Girls Club event is the annual street party on Aug. 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. open to all kids and families throughout Williams Lake and surrounding communities. “It’s completely free and open to everyone, and there is something for every age of kid,” Neufeld said. “There will be live entertainment, games for families, kids and youth, fun activities, free food and a water fight with the RCMP.”
For more information about the Boys and Girls Club and their range of activities visit www.bgcwilliamslake.com, phone 250-392-5730 or follow them on Facebook.

Bard of Barkerville and Wells return engagement Many people in the Cariboo know of Ross Douglas for his nine years as musical director, actor and song-writer at Theatre Royal in Barkerville. During that time Ross also wrote some of the most poignant, funny and honest songs about life in the community of Wells and the Cariboo in general. His songs may be set in the recent past or the present, but they still carry a timeless message. To the rest of the world Ross Douglas, lives in Vancouver, has produced three independent CD’s, acted, wrote and sang in such hits as Billy Bishop Goes To War, Angry Housewives, Rocky Horror Show and more. In addition he’s won international awards for his jazz, folk, and roots songwriting skills, and has fans in a hundred and fifteen countries around the world. The Bear’s Paw Cafe will be hosting Ross Douglas for what has become his annual visit to Wells, on Tuesday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Stage. His live

shows are a fabulous blend of a wide variety of musical genres. They are played on an equally varied collection of musical instruments, from keyboard to mandolin. In addition, he interjects history, comedy, and theatre in a show that guaranteed to please crowds. Ross is promising to play a wide selection of his Cariboo favourites, including the gold standard of song-writing...Wells, from his second al-

bum Cariboo Eclectic. This song describes Wells in its hey-day in the 1930’s. The lyric: “I’d rather be a miner with a smell, than a dis-infected hobo begging nickels in Quesnel,” is just part of a tender and romantic ballad, written to describe the heyday of Wells during the dirty thirties. This handsome two-storey home, with its steeply pitched roof-line, offers everything a contemporary family requires for today’s busy lifestyle. Entry is through a covered porch and into the ground-floor foyer, which boasts a dramatic double-height ceiling. A coat closet is located near the stairs to the main floor, and the laundry room is tucked behind the closet. Extra storage is located under the staircase. To the left of the foyer is a den, ideally located for a home office, since visitors and clients won’t have to traipse through the home to reach it. Upstairs, the great room occupies the front of the home. With a vaulted ceiling to add flair, this room also enjoys access to a large L-shaped sundeck. Open to the great room, the dining room features a distinctive dropped ceiling and an optional built-out buffet. A covered deck area beyond French doors will make the perfect spot for year-round barbecuing. The kitchen is separated from the dining room by an eating bar, just the place for casual meals and snacks. The efficient U-shaped counter configuration will save steps for the cook, who will also appreciate the spacious pantry and easy access to a covered patio that overlooks the back garden, making outdoor meals a breeze. A touch of luxury pervades the master suite, situated at the back of the house for privacy and featuring its own built-in entertainment unit. French doors that open on to a secluded patio, a vaulted ceiling and a spacious walk-in closet all add to the atmosphere. The large ensuite features

a soaker tub with its own window, as well as a corner shower stall. The second and third bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom, and a linen closet is conveniently located nearby. The second bedroom’s built-in desk is sure to make studying less of a chore. On the exterior, shingles and wood siding lend an air of old-world charm, enhanced by the mullioned windows, painted trim and stone chimney. The front door boasts a side window, and a wooden pilaster with a stone base echoes the other stone accents. All interior ceilings are nine feet high. The double garage is roomy enough to include a small workshop. Measuring 39 feet wide and 55 feet, six inches deep, this home contains 1,453 square feet of living space. Plans for design 2-3-730 are available for $579 (set of 5), $657 (set of 8) and $702 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C.
