Lakecity man rescues woman just before vehicle explodes A Williams Lake man is responsible for rescuing a women involved in a vehicle crash jus before the car exploded, report 100 Mile House RCMP. On Sunday, July 21, 100 Mile House RCMP responded to a motor-vehicle incident near Crystal Lake involving a single vehicle. The lone occupant of the vehicle was impaired by alcohol and drugs when she drove head on into a tree. Williams Lake resident Teddy Bruce, who happened to be camping adjacent to the scene, heard the collision take place,

police report. When he went to see what happened, he saw the female driver still in the vehicle. He went out of his way to extricate the woman from the vehicle, injuring himself in the process and carrying her to safety prior to the vehicle exploding. Bruce’s heroic actions saved the woman’s life. Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department arrived and successfully extinguished the fire, which had spread into the tree the vehicle struck. The female driver was transported to 100 Mile District General Hospital by BC Ambulance

paramedics. She was later detained for impaired driving, and after being assessed at the local hospital, provided two breath samples showing that she had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. The female has since been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act and Issued a Driving Prohibition. ***

RCMP in Williams Lake are looking for information after a break-and-enter at the Mountview Store at 1124 Dog Creek Road early Thursday, July 25.

At 4:05 a.m. Thursday RCMP responded to a report of the break-and-enter. The front glass window had been smashed. A suspect reached in and took cases of beer. Witnesses observed a male throwing cases of beer in the rear of an older model two-tone Ford pick-up truck. Suspect(s) then drove off south on Dog Creek Road. I try to make myself go for a long walk whenever I get stressed instead of throwing food at the problem. I tell myself

I quit while I was pregnant with our two sons, only to start up again after they were born. I would probably still be smoking if our oldest son hadn’t had asthma. No preference for local ferry bidders By Tom Fletcher Black Press BC Ferries has received approval to construct three new medium-sized vessels, and the B.C. government is leaving it up to the corporation to decide where they are built. “Certainly we’d be very supportive of the ships being built in British Columbia,” Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Tuesday. “Government does not have the purview to dictate to BC Ferries who can and cannot participate in their procurement process. That’s internal to BC Ferries.” BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee announced approval Tuesday to replace two old ferries scheduled for retirement in 2016. The 48-year-old Queen of Burnaby

serves the Comox-toPowell River run, and the 49-year-old Queen of Nanaimo sails on the Tsawwassen-Gulf Islands circuit. BC Ferries announced Tuesday it will invite qualified bids for two replacement ships with capacity for up to 145 vehicles and 600 passengers. A third with room for 125 vehicles and 600 passengers will be used for peakseason service on the Gulf Islands run and replacement duty when the other two are undergoing maintenance. Qualified Canadian and international shipyards will be invited to bid, with a contract to be awarded by January 2014. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said the focus is on cost savings and standardization of vessels, many of which now have differ-

ent deck heights and dock requirements. The last major contract was for three Coastal-class ferries, completed by a German shipyard in 2007 and 2008. They now serve the main Vancouver Island runs. Corrigan said BC Ferries will examine whether new ships can be run on liquefied natural gas instead of diesel. That increases the construction cost, but fuel savings are projected to pay for themselves in as little as eight years. The Coastal Ferries Act requires the BC Ferries Commissioner to approve capital expenditures. The order

for these ferries specifies that construction must be open to a pool of bidders, and that food and retail services on board must not be subsidized by fare revenue. Brian Carter, president of Seaspan Shipyards, which operates two facilities in North Vancouver and Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt, said the announcement is “great news for B.C. Ferries and great news for the overall marine industry in the region.” Seaspan is currently five months into design work, with construction due to start next spring or summer on a contract

to build vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard. The company will assess its capacity to take on such a B.C. Ferries contract once it determines the specifics of the request, Carter said. While Seaspan has never built an LNG powered vessel, Carter said the manufacture of LNG equipment would likely take place off site. In terms of competing against foreign firms, he said the federal shipbuilding program is giving the company and the B.C. industry in general more competitive capabilities every day. “True efficiencies [will be] gained once we start constructing vessels.”

Kitimat ocean research set for oil tankers Tom Fletcher Black Press

A little-noticed federal ocean monitoring program around Kitimat is the clearest signal yet that the federal government is preparing the region for crude oil tanker traffic, Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver says. Weaver was catching up on his scientific reading after the B.C. election when he stumbled on a line – “almost a throwaway” – in the April issue of Canadian Ocean Science Newsletter. “A major initiative in planning is the complementary measures project for the area surrounding Kitimat British Columbia to support planned oil traffic,” it says. Government scientists who developed the system in the Gulf of St. Lawrence say it is to help “search and rescue, oil spill response and to ensure safe and navigable waterways.” Weaver said the project goes well beyond research, and represents a major ongoing budget commitment by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to forecast ocean con-

ditions for oil tanker traffic. “My conclusion is, come hell or high water, the intention of the feds right now is to ship bitumen to Asia through Kitimat,” Weaver said in an interview. “Whether it be through rail or through pipeline, it’s going to happen, and I don’t think that British Columbians are getting the whole picture here.” Environment Canada spokesman Mark Johnson issued a statement confirming the program was funded in the 2012 federal budget, under the government’s “responsible resource development” initiative. Its purpose is to

Let’s have fun, let’s do something.” This is the time of year when most families seize the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, especially work. It is a chance to unwind, to unload the stress of life and get prepped for another year of busyness. Now, some may wonder, “Is it good Christian behaviour to take vacations?” I was thinking about all of this the other day as I was driving down the road, pulling an RV. And I recalled that my parents could usually only manage a day between chore times or if they were blessed enough to be able to find someone to do the chores for them, they could stay away till later in the evening. These ‘one day’ vacations were precious to them but I am sure that such short breaks did little to relieve stress and allow them to relax. For them vacation was simply a matter of doing something different, a break from the routine. Why do we all so desperately need time away from work, from our busy lives? Why do we need to ‘destress’ and rejuvenate ourselves?

BY GERRIT APPERLOO What is it about our life style that makes this such a critical thing? We could write books about that, couldn’t we? In fact, there are books dealing with just that issue and some of them contain excellent suggestions. As I was pondering these questions, I remember reading about Jesus taking a break from the stress and the busyness of life as well. John 6:15 records one time when the people were plotting to force Jesus to be an earthly king and “he withdrew again to a mountain by himself”. Jesus took a vacation from what

he was engaged in, took the time to regroup, to become revitalized, to get refocused on the true course of his life. And if Jesus did this, perhaps taking a vacation is a very Christian thing to do. I know that to take time to rebuild family relationships is a good thing, though these relationships should not have deteriorated in the first place. But then, that is the stress of life interfering with our good intentions, isn’t it? But while Jesus took time away from the crowds and spent time just with his close friends, his disciples, or spent time just by himself, Jesus also did one other thing: he spent time in prayer with his Father in heaven. If we accept that vacations from work and normal activities of life is a Christian thing to do, then let me also ask this question: “Are you also doing the other Christlike thing of building yourself up spiritually by spending time in prayer and devotions?” Taking vacations is fun and often helps in eliminating stress. But taking the time to do a spiritual retreat, even if it is just in your own back yard, is much more effective. Have a great summer!

Farmers’ market coupon program expands A successful program that provides lower-income families, pregnant women and seniors with coupons for locally produced food is receiving an additional $2 million investment, Health Minister Terry Lake announced recently in Kamloops. “We know that having access to healthy, fresh foods makes a huge difference in health,” said Lake. “Unfortunately, for some British Columbians, it can be hard to access these nutritious necessities. This program will help us improve the health of B.C. families by offering improved access to locally produced food for those most in need.” The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program runs from July through October 2013 and is administered by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. The program offers $15 worth of coupons each week to individuals and families enrolled in the nutrition and skills building programs offered by community agencies associated with each participating market - participants must be enrolled with these community agencies to

income families.” This year, the program has added 13 new markets for a total of 34 participating markets located throughout the province. Coupons are treated like cash at the participating markets and can be used to purchase a variety of B.C. food products including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, dairy and herbs.

“This program had great success last year, and we are thrilled that it is expanding this year, with additional markets and communities participating,” said Jon Bell, president, BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “The program is really a win-win, for both local producers and local families.” The program is expected to support about 1,300 families and 400 seniors in 2013 and will continue to expand. The $2 million in funding provided through the Provincial Health Services Authority in 2013 builds on an initial $2 million investment in 2012. The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets accepts joint applications from farmers’ markets and community agencies on a yearly basis for the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program. “We are so pleased to be participating in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program,” said Suzan Goguen, executive director with the Seniors Outreach Society. “Each week, our seniors are able to use the coupons to visit their local market, where they can access fresh, nutritious food and engage with their

Bard of Barkerville and Wells return engagement Many people in the Cariboo know of Ross Douglas for his nine years as musical director, actor and song-writer at Theatre Royal in Barkerville. During that time Ross also wrote some of the most poignant, funny and honest songs about life in the community of Wells and the Cariboo in general. His songs may be set in the recent past or the present, but they still carry a timeless message. To the rest of the world Ross Douglas, lives in Vancouver, has produced three independent CD’s, acted, wrote and sang in such hits as Billy Bishop Goes To War, Angry Housewives, Rocky Horror Show and more. Position Title: Research Assistant Classification: Temporary Part-Time Position based on renewal of contact (Contract ending March 2014) Salary: TBA Location: Tsilhqot’in National Government Tsilhqot’in Stewardship Department – Our office is seeking to hire one (1) Research Assistant for a part time position beginning August 2013. The Research Assistant will work with the principle investigator to collate data collected as part of the community based project, assist in data interpretation and conduct a literature review on environmental contaminates. Research assistant is also responsible for supporting all deliverables for a community based environmental health project, working with field technicians to ensure samples are collected in a timely manner and delivered to the lab for analysis. Training will be provided.
