RCMP impounds vehicles

On July 26, around 6:15 p.m., police observed a male operating a motorcycle on Second Street by the airport – the vehicle was stopped and it was determined the rider was prohibited from driving. Grand Forks RCMP’s Cpl. Richard Lanz said the driver of the vehicle is to appear in court at a later date for driving while prohibited and was also given a violation ticket for speeding. The motorcycle was impounded for 30 days. Also that day, there were a number of complaints that the driver of a White Mazda Protégé between Rock Creek and Grand Forks, was a possible impaired driver. “At about 8:25 p.m. the vehicle was located on Highway 3 by York Road. As a result of the investigation, the driver did show signs of impairment and a roadside breath test was given,” explained Lanz. The driver of the vehicle blew a fail and upon a second sample, also blew a fail. “As a result of the two failed tests, the driver was issued a 90-day IRP (immediate roadside prohibition) and her vehicle was impounded,” Lanz said. The driver was from Kelowna. No liquor infractions on Christina Lake but infractions at Christina Lake Over the last week, Grand Forks RCMP continued its patrols of Christina Lake and according to Lanz, there were 17 warnings issued for various violations ranging from not having a lifejacket to no boat registration. He said there were no liquor infractions on the waters, however the same could not be said of the land and surrounding area. “Patrols were made at Christina Lake over the weekend and several youth were checked going to and from parties in the area. There was one young person charged for ‘minor in possession’ and one person charged for consuming liquor in a public place,” explained Lanz. “Also, one intoxicated youth was located and

was taken home to their parents,” he said. Assault reported, RCMP say ex-boyfriend to be charged On July 23, a female was at the Grand Forks detachment office and reported being assaulted. “She reported being assaulted by her exboyfriend and as a result, an investigation was started and the suspect had been arrested and released on a promise to appear in court at a later date,” Lanz explained, adding that no serious injuries occurred as a result of the assault. “We’re submitting charges but nothing’s been officially laid yet,” Lanz said. As a result, no names have been released. Lock your car doors Grand Forks RCMP are once again reminding residents to lock their car doors. Police have made many reminders over the past year, as there has been car thefts reported – many involving unlocked cars, such as the following. On July 24, police received a report that sometime over the evening, a vehicle had been entered on 80th Avenue in Grand Forks. There was loose change taken but more importantly a passport – Lanz said it appeared the vehicle had been unlocked at the time. That same day, a similar incident was reported at Christina Lake at 2 p.m. “An unlocked vehicle had been entered while it was parked behind the (Kool Treat) at Christina Lake and stolen from the vehicle were a cellphone and pink wallet containing numerous cards,” according to Lanz. Theft from purse reported at local Overwaitea A shopper at Overwaitea reported that her wallet had been stolen from her purse, in her shopping basket – Lanz said she had set the basket down. The incident took place on July 25. Motor theft On July 25, there was a report that a motor and battery had been taken from a gravel pit at Christina Lake. The theft was thought to have occurred between July 16 and 23 and Lanz said the value of the theft is about $900. RCMP said there wasn’t any additional information on the incident.

At the July 22 regular city council meeting, Grand Forks city council discussed ways of dealing with the problematic deer issue around town, including a controversial deer education program. The program, entitled WildSafeBC, is run by the B.C. Conservation Foundation and is designed to reduce human-wildlife conflicts. Coun. Cher Wyers suggested council take the issue to the September Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) conference in Vancouver, B.C., while Coun. Gary Smith wanted the city to have the “teeth to fine people (who feed deer).” Coun. Bob Kendel said that the best and fastest education is to implement the WildSafeBC program. “Some of the councillors feel we should be saying ‘no’ to getting involved in the cost of it and going to (the provincial) government and saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got a responsibility here to assist us and share the cost’,” said Mayor Brian Taylor. “On the other side, you’ve got government saying, ‘You’ve got the apple orchards that are unfenced; the gardens they get into that feed the deer.’ There (are) various responsibilities on us as citizens. The government is pointing to us and saying that if you can change things in your community the deer problem would be mitigated.” Taylor said the deer problem in Grand Forks is certainly not unique in the province. It’s a problem in so many communities, he said. “It’s a very costly matter (for the provincial government) to get involved,” said Taylor. He said the starting point with dealing with the deer issue is education. To that end, council carried a motion to spend $15,000 on the WildSafeBC focusing on white-tail deer. Variance permit delayed After carrying a motion to approve a variance permit for a property on 12th Street at the July 22 meeting, council later voted to table the motion after hearing a complaint from a neighbour. The development variance permit would allow the property owners to construct a 74-square metre garage/storage building. A concerned resident said he had received a letter from the city stating he could come to city council to voice any complaints about the permit. Mayor Brian Taylor said the city does not hold public hearings for

minor variances. “There was no public hearing. What he was sent was just a letter stating this was taking place, not that there was a public hearing,” said Taylor. “But that is confusing. That’s why we backed it up. I think governments need to be flexible enough so that when you get yourself into a corner, you don’t just forget the customers, who are the people we serve. It’s not hurting anyone to back up and hear from both parties who are concerned.” The resident and the property owner are expected to meet with Sasha Bird, the City of Grand Forks manager of development and engineering. Bird will then make a recommendation to council for a final decision on the variance. Economic development During the council reports Councillors Kendel and Smith both gave a recap of a recent visit to an economic development conference. “It was all the economic development officers and representatives from various ministries all in attendance,” said Smith. “It was a real melting pot of ideas and policies that different communities around the province have in place. We were pretty much the only two politicians there but we were welcomed.” As the chairs of the Grand Forks Economic Development Committee, the two councillors wanted to gain insight into what was going on throughout the province. Smith thought the conference was worthwhile with some very intense but educational presentations from experts from throughout B.C. The pair was able to show off the new branding for the city and were very pleased with the positive feedback. “We had great feedback – hands down, it was all positive,” said Smith. Bylaw readings Council looked at several city bylaws as part of its continuing effort to streamline. Repealed were bylaw numbers 1979 (traffic regulations), 1980 (municipal ticketing information), 1981 (park access), 1982 (unsightly premise), 1983 (noise control), 1985 (minimum maintenance standards) and 1986 (fire and life safety). Seeing final reading at the meeting were rewritten bylaw numbers 1956 (new traffic regulations), 1957 (new municipal ticketing information), 1959 (new park access), 1962 (new unsightly premises), 1963 (new noise control), and 1965 (new fire and life safety).

‘Lock doors’ broken record continues It’s not that the Grand Forks Gazette is re-using old editorial material and it’s not that there aren’t a variety of other topics to discuss but people in Grand Forks, Christina Lake and area should lock their car doors. Don’t just consider locking doors but actually lock vehicle doors; using keys or keychain devices until a beep, a click or both are heard. While there are incidents of break-and-enters (B&E) into cars frequently reported to the local RCMP, there have been some notable items reported stolen over the past two weeks – a camera and a passport. According to police, in both instances, doors were unlocked. Some might be of the mind that Grand Forks is a small town, with a population of just under 4,000 (as of 2011), and everyone knows one another and as such, it is a safe place and they wouldn’t be wrong to think that. However, just because it is considered safe, doesn’t mean there isn’t crime that takes place in the area. According to numbers from the local RCMP, there were 48 total B&Es in Grand Forks in 2012 and 60 B&Es into cars during the same time and although a proliﬁc offender was charged in a string of car B&Es last year, in some of the instances car doors were unlocked – making it easy pickings for anyone wanting to enter and steal. The situation is similar to a parent telling children to lock both ways before they cross the street. The child doesn’t necessarily or initially listen to the parent but the advice is sound and just like the “lock your car doors” refrain it needs to be followed. Yes Grand Forks and the Christina Lake area are safe places to live by all accounts and yes, it seems like everyone knows one another but it isn’t a hard task to make sure doors of vehicles, whether it is cars, trucks or the like, are locked. Police have been asking people to lock their car doors seemingly forever and it may seem annoying that the topic is constantly being mentioned and many likely want to stop hearing it. If more people heed the advice, it will.

As anyone can tell you, settling into a new job in a new community is not an easy process. I am grateful that people in Grand Forks and everyone at the Gazette has been very accommodating and patient. The people in this community are truly of a friendly sort. But as with anything new, there have been more than a few bumps along the road for me in settling in. Finding a place went relatively smoothly. Moving mid-month wasn’t easy, especially when I had already paid for the full month in Merritt but so be it. Trying to get money to pay the rent in a town without my bank wasn’t so easy. A local ATM liked my debit card so much, it decided to keep it. After several phone calls and meetings, I was told the banking institute could not return my card until I proved it was mine. Fortunately, after answering many

skill-testing questions about myself, I was able to get the card back and I got to thinking; it’s amazing how much we truly rely on debit cards these days. If this went on I would have had no way to pay for anything. Really, who carries cash around these days? After that was taken care of it was time to get a post ofﬁce box. That required proof of residency but unfortunately, my landlord doesn’t live here and could not just drop off a letter with the tenant agreement. After an aborted fax attempt (I don’t have a fax machine), he ﬁnally was able to scan and email it to me. That did the trick.

I then had to go to city hall to get the power switched over to my name but, of course, that requires a signature from the landlord as well. Oh boy. Surely getting the cable and Internet hooked up won’t be that much trouble. What? That’s a two-week wait? Apparently the technician has to come from Prince George (I assume) to my place to call in to head office to flip the switch that turns on the cable and Internet. Meanwhile while I wait, I might as well head to the river for a float. Anyone know the directions? Turn right at the firehall? I don’t even know where the firehall is. Yes, it can be daunting getting things set up as well as trying to find where everything in town is. But that’s part of the fun and adventure of living and working in a new town. I say bring it on!

Work on animal bylaw now Editor: It has been four months since the public meeting which mainly concerned the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s (RDKB) new “omnibus” bylaw covering many aspects of domestic animal and pet husbandry. It mostly dealt with dogs and the dog pound; cats were not mentioned. The reason for combining several separate

bylaws was never explained. It produced a lengthy document, not easily understood, containing many contentious issues – unreasonable fines; euthanizing animals after brief periods of time; defining vicious dogs purely by breed and unrestricted access to private property. It did not touch on everyday and routine aspects of breeding, boarding kennels, grooming, training, the adoption of “orphaned” animals, or any provision for working dogs. At a recent Grand Forks city council meeting, Mayor Brian Taylor mentioned in an informal comment that the ‘dog bylaw’ is still in a state of flux and that, perhaps, the city should start writing its own.

z OPINION Grand Forks is an industrial, urban area; RDKB Area D is a generally an unimproved, rural area. It is highly likely that one bylaw will not fit both situations. Area C has already dealt with itself; as have Areas A and B, Trail and Rossland (as far as can be determined). At the March public meeting, there was unanimous support for an organized pet “industry,” including licensed boarding kennels and breeding facilities. Senior citizens and young families tend to have more pets; we need a thriving industry to support this necessary aspect of modern life. Let’s get to work … Nigel James, Grand Forks

Thumbs down to coupon thieves that raid newspaper stands Thumbs Down: To the person who went into Overwaitea and grabbed the weekly West Kootenay Advertiser paper and then put it back on the rack when they were “done” with it. When I got home I discovered that they took out all of the flyers that should have been inside but I see they left behind some of a coupon digest after of course they picked over their favourite coupons. They are thoughtless and inconsiderate. Either take the whole paper home with or leave it alone!! Tsk, tsk, tsk! Thumbs Up: For those people who have enough sense to leave their pets at home especially in this heat! Take them for a car ride some other time! Better yet, bring them home some ice cream! Thumbs Down: Noisy neighbours who peel in and out of their driveways at all hours of the night. You’re back and forth like a yo-yo. And then you’re setting your car alarm (beep, beep) and then unlocking your car (beep, beep) over and over and over again. Is this what a bunch of grown people do? Besides that, do you realize how many very late nights there have been when you’re all outside talking as if the Grand Canyon was separating you? I heard one of the neighbours asking you politely to tone it down.

Shark finning is a disgusting practice

Recently I had a chance to see the documentary Sharkwater and watched how sharks are caught, their fins are cut off and they are thrown back into the water. ALEX This practice is repulsive, ATAMANENKO immoral and is largely driven by an underground market controlled by organized crime that exploits threatened and endangered species to maximize profits. To combat this barbaric practice, Bill C-380, An Act to Amend the Fish Inspection Act and the Fisheries Act was introduced by my colleague, Fin Donnelly, MP for Burnaby-Coquitlam on Dec. 11, 2011. Some elected members have suggested that Bill C-380 is unnecessary because Canada already has enough laws and that Canada bans the trade of shark products from species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) or the Species at Risk Act (SARA). According to the Canadian branch of Humane Society International, this is false. Both CITE and SARA only protect three species of shark: basking sharks, whale sharks and great white sharks. In other words, out of 141 threatened or near-threatened shark species only three are protected by Canadian federal laws. Another myth we hear is that Canada bans or restricts the trade, possession or sale of shark products that present human health or safety concerns. This is also false. Shark fins, which continue to be legally imported into Canada contain high concentrations of a potent neurotoxin, BMAA, which scientists have linked to neurodegenerative diseases in humans such as Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease. This is not unlike, for example, the link between phenylbutazone in horsemeat and aplastic anemia in children. The third myth states that working through regional fisheries management organizations to ensure strong global management and enforcement practices is the most effective way to prevent unsustainable shark fishing practices such as finning. This is also false. As long as there is a demand for shark fins, there will be local industry pressure on governments not to prohibit the practice. This demand will also perpetuate the poaching of sharks in the waters of countries that already prohibit finning. Canada has already been identified, for example, by CSIS as a destination country for poached shark fins from Australia, even though some Australian states have some of the world’s strongest shark finning laws. Eliminating the demand removes incentive for fishermen to continue finning and poaching sharks. We had a chance in the House of Commons to take a major step to end this disgusting practice. However, during the vote on March 27, 2013, Bill C-30 was defeated 143 to 138, denying this bill being sent to Committee. As a result, this bill regrettably died in second reading. It is my hope that C-380 was able to generate enough support across this country so that one day soon, we will have the necessary legislation to put an end to shark finning. Community Ambassador Program to be launched

Volunteers are being sought for a program that will see what amounts to walking tourist information booths. The Community Ambassador Program is the brainchild of Coun. Bob Kendel and will see volunteers roaming areas like the downtown core, providing information to tourists and residents. The program is based out of the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce (BCRCC) office at Community Futures. The Visitors’ Information Centre at gallery 2 is a key partner and community ambassadors will be able to refer people to the centre for information about the area, including events and accommodations. Volunteers would walk around with a shirt and lanyard that identifies them as an ambassador and the BCRCC, Grand Forks Credit Union, the City of Grand Forks and the Visitor Information Centre are amongst those teaming up for the initiative. “I just think that the community is always in need of a volunteer base for all kinds of things. You would be a volunteer but you would be a volunteer to be an ambassador for the city and hopefully it will turn into a regional program,” Kendel explained, adding that the program will be a work in progress, as the “nuts and bolts” of the program are currently being established. BCRCC executive director James Wilson said ambassadors would be invaluable, not only to help tourists during the week but during times where there are events and festivities taking place. “Depending on if it’s an event, i.e. the fall fair, you would walk around and talk to people and help them with any kind of questions and we would like to target tourist people because they’re always looking for things to do or wondering what’s going on around here,” Wilson said. “It’s a good chance to showcase events and say, ‘Hey, if you’re interested in camping, we have these spots,’ or just to bring more tourists into this community.” Kendel said the program takes ideas from similar programs from Pitt Meadows, B.C., Langley, B.C. and Tofino, B.C. and volunteers will be able to fill out applications beginning at the Farmers’ Market this Friday (Aug. 2). “You’ll need to make an application and then there’ll be training, which would be a World Host program,” said Kendel. “There will be a code of ethics that we’ll expect everyone to adhere to and other than that, exactly how it’s going to work, we’re hoping that it will be something where, if you want to be part of an event, or just be an ambassador for the day, you stop in at the visitors’ centre, make sure you have all of the current information of what’s going on in the city.”

Claire Yallits was there for Bowling and her team mate Maria from Trail won a gold medal for a score of 242. Noah Trainer brought home one bronze medal, Brogan Belliveau 2 bronze and Brad Goosen two gold, one silver and two bronze medals for swimming. Christina Lake resident Beverley Reid has been making artwork for more than five decades. Following her graduation from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 1956, she worked in Vancouver and England as a display designer for many retailers and television. Subsequent to her return to Canada in 1964, she began making traditional quilts. Over the past 43 years, Reid

has refined a distinct affiliation with fabric, revealing an intimate appreciation for its qualities. Although mainly known for her fabric assemblages, Reid’s works on paper – her drawings, monoprints and watercolours – stand on their own as wonderfully composed works, as well as becoming stepping stones into experimentation and expansion for her fabric practice. Hanging by a Thread contains 23 mixed media artworks on paper created in 1990 in addition to 40 fabric works produced over the past seven years. This exhibition demonstrates Reid’s mastery of a wide array of tools and application

techniques. The fabric assemblages presented feature a variety of surface treatments including the use of dyes, chlorine, and hydrogen peroxide to manipulate shading and dimension. Stitches are used as “drawing marks” to further enhance texture. Just as a painter develops a unique palette of colours, so Reid incorporates and manipulates a diverse collection of fabric prints to produce her images. The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. at gallery 2. Reid will be in attendance and available to discuss her work. The exhibition runs until Oct. 19.

We’ve got some great new summer reads on our shelves, and I want to tell you a little bit about some of them. We now have one of Stephen King’s most riveting novels, The Long Walk – he wrote it in 1979, under the pen name Richard Bachman. We also have one of the most talkedabout romantic comedies of the year, The Rosie Project, which tells the story of a brilliant, autistic scientist who tries to find love

in all the wrong ways. And our graphic novel collection continues to grow, with our latest addition, Sugar Falls, based on the true story of a residential school survivor. To our non-fiction collection, we’ve added How Can I Be Your Lover When I’m Too Busy Being Your Mother: The Answer to Becoming Partners Again, and Sewing Green: 25 Projects Made with Repurposed and Organic Materials. Flour power

It has been two years since flour was last made at the Pride of the Valley flour mill but it is being made again by miller Wallace Dergousoff with non-genetically modified wheat from Rock Creek. The mill is the only Doukhobor commercial business left that is still operating as it was intended. Pride of the Valley flour will be sold out of the mill, which is located near the USCC hall. On July 23, several budding gardeners at Hanneke’s Place – Kettle River Community Garden – learned about the new drip irrigation system the garden is now using. There were several volunteers on hand to show people how to use the new system, including Mike Jones from Y&R Water, who installed the system, and Graham Watt, director of community service for the Grand Forks Rotary Club and volunteer with the community garden. “We switched them from an overhead system to the drip system,” said Jones. “They were having trouble with people growing garlic who didn’t want to water. With the overhead water, it waters everything including the weeds in between the (garden) beds. This way it conserves water and people have control over how much

water goes into their own bed.” Jones said the drip irrigation is pretty easy to use once shown. The Kettle River Community Garden originally came from an initiative from the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society. “They launched it as a project to give locals without access to garden space a chance to grow food,” said Watt. “The city donated the land and the water for the project.” Watt said the Grand Forks Rotary Club was involved with some of the initial set up for the community garden in 2010, and stepped up again this year to pay for the drip irrigation system. “It’s a great way of conserving water in the garden,” Watt said. “For a little bit of up-front cost you can save a lot of water and a lot of time watering your garden. It’s a big savings for water conservation and provides a lot of options for the gardeners.”

On Sunday, Aug. 11 at the stage at City Park, Habitat for Humanity Boundary (HFHB) will be sponsoring an evening festival of local storytelling, song, dance and music. All the performers are donating their talents to the event, which will be a fundraiser for the latest HFHB project, the Multi-Agency Accommodation Project or MAAP. The stage will be all dressed up with a colourful backdrop, lights and a ring of bleachers

for the audience. To add to the fun, food vendors from around the Boundary will be selling dinner, drinks and goodies to the audience. During the performances HFHB will be passing the hat, seeking the audience’s donations to help “raise the roof” for the new combined Whispers of Hope thrift store and BETHS emergency shelter. The entertainment will start at 4 p.m. with an hour of storytelling and children’s songs for the younger set. Performances by Rosemary Phillips, Sheila Dobie and Lea Barkhizen are meant to get the kids up close. Then there is two hours of the mellow songs of the Not Yet

Duo, Dave Soroka and Christopher Stevenson. After that, two rock bands will crank up the atmosphere before Luminosity salutes the darkness with its own unique dance entertainment. Bugsy Blues (a.k.a. Gary Smith) will not only MC the entire event, his rock band the Sputniks will raise the energy level right until 10 p.m. The community is encouraged to come enjoy the music and the food. By giving a donation at the event, people will be “Raising the Roof” on a much needed facility. Please come to enjoy and to contribute to this unique celebration.

KCM and CMC magazines take awards z Regional Submission

A f t e r 12 years of publishing, a local group of magazine makers has landed an extraordinary honour,

two in fact. Kootenay Mountain Culture (KMC) has been named Magazine of The Year for B.C./Yukon by the esteemed Western Magazine Awards (WMA), an organization that for the past three decades has represented all of the magazine titles throughout B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Yukon. What’s more, KMC’s partner publication, Coast Mountain Culture (CMC), has been awarded the Best New Magazine. “We were really honoured,” says KMC/CMC publisher Peter Moynes, who attended the 31st annual WMAs with editorial director Mitchell Scott and CMC editor Mike Berard last month. “The first thing we thought of was all the support we’ve had from so many folks throughout the Kootenays, some for quite a while now – our families, all our readers, contributors and all the businesses who’ve put their trust in us.” “The crowd at the awards let out a huge cheer and applause when we won Magazine of The Year,” says Scott. “We’ve been the little guys that the big guys have been watching. We’ve had all kinds of kudos from all sorts of major league print and web media titles before – everyone from the National Post to National Geographic. But to have been chosen by all our peers for this, well, it’s really something extraordinary.” KMC was up against a number of iconic Western Canadian publications including BC Business, Vancouver Magazine, Western Living and Geist. While the honours took the KMC cohorts by surprise, the awards are more than well-earned

according to well-wishers at the WMAs and Canadian magazine veterans alike. “When I first saw a copy of KMC, I couldn’t believe how polished a product it was, nor that it had emerged from a small town in B.C., of all places,” says Calgary-based writer Kevin Brooker. A journalist for the past 30 years, Brooker is a multiple WMA winner who contributes to publications including The Globe and Mail, Outside, Powder, ESPN and Applied Arts. “Most of all, however, I was heartened to see that at a time when budget constraints and changing times are forcing a lot of magazines to lower print standards, replace custom photography with stock and reduce their editorial staff, KMC and CMC were forging a really sophisticated visual and literary voice,” says Brooker. “The products go light-years beyond anything that one normally encounters in the mountain/ outdoors genre, or most any other genre for that matter.” What onlookers say is most extraordinary about the KMC/CMC product, is the fact both magazines are free, relying entirely on advertising and distribution support. Launched in 2001 as a tiny 28-page handout, and today still run from over top Moynes’ backyard garage, Kootenay Mountain Culture (KMC) has been supported by small businesses, resorts and destination marketing organizations from throughout the West and East Kootenay and Columbia regions. Moynes credits the magazine’s well-targeted distribution for the success, noting that the publications are essentially calling cards for the places and people the magazines’ writers and photographers tell stories about. “We live in one of the greatest places in the world. We’re blessed. And to be able to work with so many people in the communities all around us, and help build their businesses, we consider ourselves very fortunate. Our sincere thanks go out to everyone.”

Vancouver Whitecaps FC regional head coach David Broadhurst will WHITECAPS be in Nelson FOOTBALL CLUB from Aug. 10 to 18 to lead the evaluations for the Whitecaps FC Kootenay Prospects Academy. Boys and girls ages U-10 to U-18 will have the opportunity to be evaluated for selection and invitation to the Kootenay Prospects program, which will include up to four boys and four girls’ training groups with 16 to 20 players per training group. “We really enjoyed our inaugural year in the Kootenays and learned more about how the program can have the greatest impact and benefit for local players,” said Whitecaps FC director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. “Based on that, we have made some adjustments this year that will provide a regular Whitecaps FC presence in the Kootenays, more regular contact with the players, and increased communication.” The program, including all sessions, will be run by Whitecaps FC Okanagan regional head coach David Broadhurst and will include a 10-month program with three phases, running September through June, with weekly

There will also be one travel weekend per phase, which last year included an MLS weekend in Vancouver featuring an on-field training session and a Whitecaps FC MLS match. “The club’s desire is to have an overall regional program strategy that will allow the prospects’ academy to be accessible to the best players in the Kootenay region,” said Broadhurst. “In this coming 2013-14 cycle, we will operate a west program, which will primarily be open to players from Nelson and Kootenay South. The objective will be to work towards a similar east program for the fall of 201415. This will then provide the ability to connect the two programs for select training and events.” Whitecaps FC currently provide technical services to the Nelson Youth Soccer Association and hope to expand these services to other areas of the Kootenays. To be selected for the Whitecaps FC Prospects Academy, all players must register for the evaluation process. Evaluation sessions will be held at Lakeside Park in Nelson during the weekends of Aug. 10 to 11 and again from Aug. 17 to 18. Parents can save cash with early sign-up It may be a heat wave outside, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start

Grand Forks Minor Hockey Association (GFMHA) President Ron Vautour wants to remind people that early bird registration is already under way and parents can sign up on the association website at www.grandforksmha.ca. “We want people to start thinking about hockey because the season will start in another six weeks,” said Vautour. “The key thing is we want people to get registered.” Parents can save $50 on their registration fee if they sign up before the Aug. 19 early bird registration deadline. Vautour said that all registrations are now done online. GFMHA is also looking for volunteers to fill several vacant board positions such as: secretary, fundraising co-ordinator, initiation co-ordinator and coach co-ordinator “Information on these positions can be found in the ‘downloads’ section on our website,” said Vautour, “Or by contacting any board member.” Last year, GFMHA had over 100 players registered on six teams including a bantam rep team and a peewee rep team. Vautour said there is financial assistance available through KidSport for families that qualify. “We have a link on our website to that program,” he said. “Lots of families take advantage of that opportunity.” For hockey players looking to improve on

Christina Laker off to world juniors

Christina Lake’s James Dergousoff has taken another major step in his THERESA swimming caDERGOUSOFF reer. Earlier this month in Montreal at Canadian Summer Nationals, he qualified for the FINA (international swimming federation) World Junior Championships, to be held in Dubai, UAE, from Aug. 26 to Aug. 31. At age 16, Dergousoff will be competing against the best 18-year-old and under swimmers in the world. His qualifying race at nationals was the 200-metre breaststroke, where he set a new provincial record and earned a silver medal in the open category. He is currently in Sherbrooke, Que. with Team BC preparing for the Canada Summer Games, which start this Friday (Aug. 2). After the summer games, his Team Canada World Junior teammates will assemble in Barcelona for a one-week staging camp before heading to Dubai. Dergousoff started off his swimming career at a very early age at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre; his first swim lessons as a two-year-old were taught by another Christina Laker, Dayna Esson. At five years old, James joined the Grand Forks Piranhas Swim Club, where his first swim coach was Cora Ludwar. He made the transition to winter swimming in 2008, and joined the Chena North Shore Swim Team in North Vancouver, B.C., where he has trained ever since. He is currently coached by Patrick Paradis.

Also at summer nationals, Chena’s junior men’s team set a new Canadian national record in the men’s 17 and under 4x100-metre medley relay, with Dergousoff swimming the breaststroke leg of the race – he now holds six provincial records and one national record. Earlier this year, he travelled to Sydney, Australia with a Team Canada tour team to compete in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Another highlight happened this past May, when he swam against world record holder Ryan Lochte in the 200-metre Individual medley finals at the Canada Cup (Mel Zajac) swim meet in Vancouver. Dergousoff is looking forward to coming home to Christina Lake where he can rest up, kick back, relax, enjoy the lake, and visit with friends.

Whether you’re running, playing a game of pickup basketball or going for a power walk, take care when the temperatures rise. If you exercise outdoors in hot weather, use these common-sense precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. How does heat affect your body? Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. If you don’t take care when exercising in the heat, you risk serious illness. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature increase your core body temperature. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate. If the humidity also is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. That pushes your body temperature even higher. Under normal conditions, your skin, blood

vessels and perspiration level adjust to the heat. But these natural cooling systems may fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures and humidity for too long and you sweat heavily and you don’t drink enough fluids. The result may be a heat-related illness. Heat-related illnesses occur along a spectrum, starting out mild but worsening if left untreated. Heat illnesses include heat cramps, which are painful muscle contraction mainly affecting the calves, quadriceps and abdominals. Affected muscles may feel firm to the touch. Your body temperature may be normal. With heat exhaustion, your body temperature rises as high as 40 C (104 F) and you may experience nausea, vomiting, headache, fainting, weakness and cold, clammy skin. If left untreated, this can lead to heatstroke. Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency condition that occurs when your body temperature is greater than 40 C (104 F). Your skin may be hot, but your body may stop sweating to help cool itself. You may develop confusion and irritability. You need immediate medical attention to prevent brain damage, organ failure or even death. Most dragon boat festivals hold a special race for breast cancer survivors, since so many women’s teams have been organized to provide emotional and physical support to survivors and to raise awareness in communities across the world. For this race, the Robusters blended with a team from Cranbrook (Abreast in the Rockies) since neither team had enough survivors to compete on their own. Despite never having paddled together before, the combined group managed a second place finish, only one second behind the winning team. the age of 93. She died peacefully at Hardy View Lodge where she has been cared for since May 2011. Mable was born in Kylemore, Sask on August 14, 1919 to Mike and Mary Arishenkoff. Mable met and married Mike Konkin in Kylemore and shortly after their marriage they moved to Salmo, BC. In 1979, they moved to Grand Forks where they spent many happy years gardening, traveling and socializing. Mable was predeceased by an infant son, Timothy, her parents, her half-sister Mary Makortoff, husband Mike and brother George Arisenkoff. She is survived by daughters Edna (John) Verschoor, Kathleen (Jim) Cherry, Gail Scherr, 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Mable is also survived by her sister Edna Cazakoff, brother Mike (Vera) Arishenkoff and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at Grand Forks Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a burial at the Evergreen Cemetery. Sharon Rose Olson, born Feb. 3, 1948 in Calgary, Alta, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2013 in Grand Forks. She is predeceased by her father Harry Williams. She is lovingly survived by her husband Michael; sons Todd and Graham (grandkids Michael, Tina and Olivia); and her mother Olive Williams, along with three brothers and two sisters, all from Calgary. She was a long-time employee of the oil industry in Calgary. Sharon enjoyed painting, golﬁng, curling, gardening, cooking, was a very talented musician, and was a long-time community volunteer. She served on the Christina Lake Golf Club executive and became president of same in 2012, and then gave this up when she became ill. She was captain of the Match Committee for three years for Tuesday Ladies Golf; also, she was co-chair for the B.C. Women’s Amateur and Mid Amateur Open Championship held at CLGC in 2012. Sharon was a long-time volunteer and was in charge of scoring at the Christina Lake Men’s Open Championship in June and the Senior Men’s Open Championship in September. Her love of curling led her to serve on numerous committees, cooking, taking care of lunches, decorating, setting tables, serving and cleanup; she also set up and ran the concession for Men’s Curling bonspiels. She received the Service Award for 2011/2012 for Volunteer of the Year. Sharon was also a long-time volunteer for the GFI. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grand Forks Curling Rink. Casual dress.
