In most of the fishing areas anglers are coming back home with good catches of Chinook and Coho salmon. George Bates reports that Salmon Caught at the Hum p fishing for Coho is excellent. Fishing from 40 to 70 feet deep using a white hoochie seems to be the best bet. Fishing for springs has been good with fish up to 30 pounds caught in the 180 to 200 feet of water. Bottom fishing has been good for halibut and cod. At Bates Beach small boat rentals are available. A creel survey was taken last Sunday on the Campbell River and no catches of pink salmon were reported. It may be a little early for the pink run but that can change as August is a very good month to start fishing for pinks using spinning gear or flies. To my amazement I used a Carey special fly on a in t number 6 hook tied with Trou ase Rele & Catch Campbell River a pheasant tail body and fished with a sinking line. Trout were hitting this fly all afternoon. On the Campbell River water levels are low and using spinning gear for trout or pinks can be fun for the family to get out and fish the Campbell. All trout are catch and release. The Tyee Club at Campbell River has started another season that will end September 15th. The rowers and fishermen head out around 7pm and return at dark, 3 boats were out last week and as many as 60 can be spotted during the late days heading in to September. No catches of Tyee at present.

The Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society (CVTRS) will host one of Canada’s most recognized icons, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride, next

While they may have received great support from the community, the Port Hardy Baptist Church will hope last weekend’s garage sale will be the last for a while. In a repeat of last year’s event, the church took in donations for the sale hoping to raise funds for the ongoing project to raise a new church building. This time around though, the end of the project’s first phase is in sight. “It went well last time and there were still things people wanted to donate,” explained Vern Braun, vice-chair of the church’s leadership team. Last weekend’s multi-family event raised over $2,100 for the cause. Braun said that the group was awaiting inspection on portions
