Pas Ka Poo Park opens medical museum By Amelia Naismith As another summer came upon Pas Ka Poo Park a new building opened up in the museum. The medical museum took three years to raise funds for, which was done in several stages, making the total cost of the building hard to tally. “There was a lot of volunteer work that went into putting the building together,” said park administrator Cheryl Jones, who added without volunteers the building wouldn’t have opened until next year. “The medical building itself showed we really needed one based on the amount of medical equipment donated,” said Jones. The museum features a complete set of dental equipment donated by the Leboldus family, as well as an operating table from the Rimbey hospital. The Gulf ambulance 1961 Chevy truck, previously housed at the truck museum, is also a part of the new displays. The originally white vehicle was painted red and used at the Rimbey Gas Plant until 2001, when it was repainted and given to the museum. “It’s pristine, it looks fabulous,” said Jones. The medical museum features displays and stories from across Rimbey’s medical past, including St. Paul’s Hospital, the three-way convalescent hospital Park administrator Cheryl Jones says a complete dentistry set was donated to the new medical and the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. “It was a much needed addition and museum by the family of Dr. F.J. Leboldus. it received wonderful reviews,” said Jones. Museum staff is compiling stories and expanding the exhibits with more artifacts. “I think it’s fun to see all the different bed pans used over the years,” said Jones. Another favorite of the museum is the maternity ward display with three incubators and forceps. The medical museum is the third heated building at Pas Ka Poo Park and boasts energy efficient lighting. “Why they decided to do it as a heated building is there’s a lot of medical texts we wanted to same from (uncontrolled) environ- Jones wipes down the operating table donated by the Rimbey Hospital. Because of a broken femur Mike couldn’t work and he began drinking and smoking; then a friend introduced him to oxycodone. After six months Mike was taking four ur to six of the expensive pills per day. To fund his habit he started selling fake concert tickets, and nd as his bank account grew so did his usage. Mike was caught and charged with five accounts of fraud. With no money he wass feeling the effects of withdrawal. “I felt like I was dying.” A doctor used prescription oxycodone ne to attempt to wean him from the drug but Mike ke began to buy street oxycodone and heroin instead. d His father told him about Teen Challenge but Mike refused and disappeared for a day. “My dad was pretty livid. He said you can either go or talk to this guy. So I did and something stirred in me.” Mike decided to attend Teen Challenge. “I usually lied to people but when I said that I really meant it, it was weird.” Before he could attend the program Mike went to detox for 10 days because of the amount of drugs he was talking. Mike hadn’t been to church in a while and once at the faith-based, residential program he felt people were over-welcoming and he had no personal space. “Looking back now I really appreciate it.” “Growing up I went to church but I never really liked it. Sometimes I still don’t like it,” said Mike. He feels church speaks only of the Bible and portrays God as a being looking down at Earth taking notes on everybody. To Mike, God is someone always walking beside him keeping him on the straight path. “This is my bro, this is my homie,” he said, waving his hand through the air next to him. His parents forced him to attend Notre Dame High School but the drug use increased. “This is when I first left home, broke,” said Carter, who was stealing to be able to afford his habits. From 15 to 18 years old Carter was homeless and ccouch surfed as much as he could. When two friends friend died in a car accident his life spiralled further ddownward. He attempted to return to Notre Dame Dam twice but was kicked out both times. During this time Carter overdosed on MDA, Durin a psychedelic, psychoactive drug. “This scared psyche me away from drugs for a little while.” But sobriety didn’t last long and eventually he was sent to the hospital a second time for mixing and alcohol. i i drugs d By age18 Carter’s life revolved around drinking, drugs, sex and organized crime. “And I glorified it. I didn’t care about human life.” Carter encouraged drug use and addictions for his own personal gain. “In a weird way, through it all, I still believed in God,” Carter remembers, when in bad situations, thinking it wasn’t his time to die and God had created him for a reason. His parents convinced him to enter the Teen Challenge program and he told his mother he’d stick it out for three months — he recently completed his seventh month. Manigault feels the Teen Challenge program helps addicts stay clean is because it focuses on the root causes of the addictions; a personal relationship with God. The program comprises 14 courses that address an addict’s relationship with God and other people. “The personal rights deal with the Charter and individual rights. We talk about how those individual rights deal with God and anger,” said Manigault. Continued on page 13

That doesn’t mean council nity is achieving steady growth — and is going to cave in to the unreasonable return to the baseline of a few years demands of the electorate — like it did ago — and we have to recognize that
an increase in the population does more than simply add new neighbours on our streets and customers in our stores; growth has a more widespread impact on the community, its needs and desires. It is a planning challenge to accommodate new, land-intensive housing developments without destroying the small town qualities that attracted the newcomers here in the first place. Creating new residential subdivisions doesn’t lower your taxes or create jobs; it requires the town to buy more snowplows and lawnmowers, maintain more buried utilities and provide more firefighters and Mounties. The alternative is to close the door to new development entirely. Cap the population of Rimbey at 5,000. Once, we’re all in; quick, close the door. Small town atmosphere means
security and safety, peace and quiet, friendliness and community spirit. We need to achieve a reasonable and sustainable balance of commercial and industrial assessment versus residential assessment. We must face the challenge to increase our self-sufficiency in creating local jobs — the more opportunities residents have to work here, the more opportunities they will have to spend here. Rimbey’s common vision should be to ensure a positive business climate that supports expansion and diversification of the local economy; and one that contributes to an improved quality of life for all residents while maintaining the community’s agricultural roots and protecting the natural environment. Election time is a great time to get the discussion started.

The first decades of the 20th century were the heyday of art deco, the most beautiful architectural style of the modern era. Even in Detroit, where so much has been lost, many art deco buildings still add a touch of class to the landscape. George Brown Photo
As it happens, I was in Detroit this month. It’s broken, and it’s broke, and now it’s officially bankrupt too. But bankruptcy is actually a device for escaping from unpayable debt — and although twothirds of Detroit’s population have fled in the past 50 years, there are reasons to believe it could flourish again. It was the race riots of 1967 that triggered the city’s decline. Large numbers of African-Americans from the southern states migrated to Detroit to meet the demand for factory workers during and after the Second World War. They started in the unskilled jobs — and even after they had acquired the skills, they stayed in low-paying jobs because of racial prejudice. Spurned by the unions and victimized by a racist police force, they eventually rioted in the summer of 1967. Brutal policing made matters worse and hundreds were killed, but the worst consequence was the fear that the violence engendered. The great majority of the whites just left town. The big automobile companies also took flight and the new car plants were built elsewhere. As the jobs disappeared and the population dropped, the tax base fell even faster. The city could no longer afford to provide good police or medical services, so even more people left. This vicious circle has lasted half a century but the bankruptcy might give the city’s government enough leeway to begin rebuilding public services. If they are restored, much else could follow. Let me explain what brought me to Detroit early this month. We were doing what we dubbed the
“Rust Belt Art and Architecture Tour”: driving from Buffalo to Cleveland and then on to Detroit. All these cities took a terrible beating as the industries they were built on died or moved overseas. But three generations ago, when they were the industrial heartland of the United States, they were very rich — at just the right time. The first decades of the 20th century were the heyday of art deco, the most beautiful architectural style of the modern era. That was also the period when newly rich captains of industry could scoop up bucketloads of new European and American art: impressionist, expressionist, abstract, the lot — and they lived mostly in what are now the Rust Belt cities. So they put up dozens of art deco towers. They also filled their homes with best of modern art — and, in the end, donated most of it to the local art galleries. Even in Detroit, where so much has been lost, more than half of those buildings are still there. So is all of the art. In a post-industrial economy where people have more choice about where they live, these are assets that can actually attract population — especially since, in Detroit’s case, the people who left didn’t go far. Most of them are still out there in the suburbs that surround Detroit. The city of Detroit’s population has fallen from two million to 700,000 over the past 50 years but the metropolitan area’s population has stayed stable at around 4.5 million for all of that time. The job, really, is to bridge the devastated middle ring of low-income Detroit housing and reconnect the outer suburbs with the city centre. Detroit can rise again. It just takes the right strategy. First run at National Simmental Cattle Show ends in victory By Amelia Naismith Stepping far beyond her comfort zone led a young 4-H rancher to winning the first national cattle show she’s ever entered. Mackenzie Skeels, 14, entered the Young Canadian Simmental Association National Classic in Okotoks July 15 to 18, and competed in showmanship, conformation, show team judging, marketing and the herdsman quiz. “I wanted to try it out, I thought it’d be really fun. It was a really fun experience, even before the show,” said Skeels. “I thought it was just a show. I didn’t know it was so much more,” she added. Skeels and brother Garren are members of the Bluffton 4-H Club. Skeels and her Anchor D bred heifer, Kate, took home Grand Champion Purebred Female of the show while her bull café, Jedi, was named Reserve Champion Bull Calf. The other youths competing in the classic provided a surprise for Skeels and her family. It was such a great environment. Those older kids just took Mackenzie and Garren (9) under their wings, said their mother, Karen Skeels. Thanks to the direction of the competitors Skeels learned how to judge and show cattle better.
“It was an experience for us. It was so great to see the kids help the kids. Sometimes you walk into situations and the groups stay groups and the outsider stays an outsider,” said Karen. “If our cattle industry could work together like those kids did . . . We could move forward,” Karen added. The classic hosted competitors from across Canada, with youths travelling from as far as Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island; some of them even bringing their own cattle. “It didn’t matter who won but it was fun to win,” said Skeels. “It was pretty exciting when I did win. I was pretty happy.” Mackenzie Skeels: First in marketing Second in team judging Third in Junior Class with heifer Angelica Champion Purebred two-year-old cow/calf Grand Champion Purebred Female Reserve Champion Bull Calf Reserve Champion Purebred Bull Garren Skeels: Fourth overall in showmanship First in team grooming Second in team judging Second in herdsman Third in the aggregate

Blindman Hall receives financial boost from Ponoka County By Amelia Naismith After several setbacks Blindman Hall Society is receiving a $20,000 grant from Ponoka County to help finish their additions project. Steeves said they decided to have the contractor work on the inside of the hall through another winter, removing the old stage and other smaller projects. “He did that . . . He did not come back to our hall until July (2012) to start working on our hall again,” said Steeves. The project moved slowly and pumps had to be brought in because the ground was so waterlogged. Before the third winter Smawley had erected fourfoot cross walls, flooring and started on the addition on the north side of the hall. For the additions, Steeves says the hall and the contractor didn’t use blueprints. “What we had to have is a drawing of what our footings would be and what our walls would be. That was all we needed to do our additions.” On May 2, 2013 Smawley email Steeves saying he wouldn’t be able to finish the job; she believes the decision was tied to family reasons. “Being no blueprints, nothing, it’s all in his head; we had to get another contractor,” said Steeves. Python Contracting Ltd, along with Rimbey Builders, was brought onto the contract and priced the project at $18,000 for materials and $20,000 for labour. Combining two accounts the society was using to pay for the additions totaled only $40,258. “And if you take the estimate here that’s $38,603. That doesn’t leave us very much. We still have to pay for our electrician and to do the inside of the hall,” said Steeves The grant won’t completely pay for the rest of the project but will ensure the hall is able to pay to the point that the hall’s additions are functioning. “I guess one of the principles that we’ve always had is helping communities that help themselves and you folks aren’t coming with a blank slate, you’ve actually been obliviously fundraising for quite a few years,” said Coun. Paul Payson. To date, $33,218 has been spent on the additions project. “The other thing I would like to mention is that we are out in the west part of the county of Ponoka and we have a lot of — I’m not going to say vandalism — as much as things Tyler Jordan DD beings stolen. It’s really (Honours) bad out our way,” said Steeves. The hall uses interior and exterior cameras but about three weeks ago the exterior camera was knocked down and stolen. Like they’ve recently done for Liberty Hall FREE Consultation Ponoka County decided with Tyler to cover Blindman Hall’s contraction insurance. “I think that goes without saying we should cover this as well,” said CAO Charlie Cutforth.
the project. “He has done a lot of work in our hall,” said Steeves. “He is very good as our contactor,” she added. Along with using resources from different accounts the Blindman River Community Hall Society has fundraised approximately $40,000 for the hall’s additions. Smawley quoted the price of the project at $64,524. “Right then and there we knew we did not have enough money in our account to be able to finish this project,” said Steeves. The society applied for a provincial Community Initiatives Program (CIP) grant. Winter passed with no real progress on the project. “In July 2011 CIP notified us that our application had been reviewed and we did not receive it.” The Blindman River Community Hall Society also wanted to apply for the community spirit program. However, due to the provincial government’s large deficit the $15 million program was cut this year.

Hoadley church hit by crippling storm By Amelia Naismith The heavens opened up over Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church July 20 and a large hailstorm caused plenty of damage. Pastor Barry Klassen doesn’t know how much the damages will amount to but has informed church officials responsible for the buildings. Trees on the property were broken and the garden, singles and siding were also wrecked. “On our Sunday School building three windows were broken,”
said Klassen. Klassen is thankful there was no flooding to follow the storm. “There was lots of hail but not that much rain.” “As nasty as the storm was I can’t imagine what the people in Calgary and High River are going through. We lose
a garden and some plants — they lost their houses,” he added. The week after the storm, the church held its Vacation Bible School and schedules didn’t have to be rearranged to accommodate Mother Nature’s wrath.

By Treena Mielke The adult/child tournament held at Gull Lake Golf Course wasn’t just about golf. And it certainly wasn’t just about winning, though nine-year-old Cole Bergheim, who aced the tournament with his partner and friend, Grandpa Bob Jamieson, was pleased to accept the $50 gift certificate given to the top team. Even without winning, it seemed youngsters who participated in the tournament really enjoyed the day and a chance to golf with a family member or friend. Bergheim is proud of his grandpa and no less proud to be his partner. “He’s hard to beat,” he said. “He’s a really good golfer.” Bergheim and his grandpa, who are both from Red Deer, golf four
times a week at a course in the city. “Golfing is my favourite sport,” he said with a big grin. “We do about 13 holes each time and I golf off the reds.” Jamieson is equally proud of his grandson. “He’s been swinging a club since he was about two and a half. He’s pretty good and he certainly enjoys the game. You never have to twist him arm to get him to come golfing.” Seven-year-old Cooper Moore from the Rimbey area also participated in the tournament. “I like golf because you can have fun and if you work hard sometime you might get a hole-in-one,” he said. Fifteen-year-old Taryn Szarka from Edmonton has golfed in the adult/child tournament for three years. Continued on page 9

Tournament brings golf pros Continued from page 8 “It’s a lot of fun to golf with friends and family and to work with the pros. There is a different pro on every hole.” Clare McMahon, also 15, from Red Deer, has participated in the tournament for seven years. “I’ve made a lot of friends and it is just a really good environment here. And coming back every year is great. It’s like a big family reunion.” The weekend event also brings many professional golfers back year after year. “It is wonderful to see the kids grow and the junior golf program grow,” said Laura Witvoet, head pro at the Wolf Creek Golf Club. Witvoet, along with other pros from Wolf Creek, teach junior golf lessons at Gull Lake Golf Course Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“It is a unique program,” she said. “There is nothing else that comes close to it as far as teaching young golfers learn the game of golf.” Stuart Hendley, a pro from Midland, Texas was pleased to be back. “I’ve been here every year since it started,” he said. “I used to bring my daughter, Kamryn, here to play golf.” Hendley threw out the idea of a skins game with the pros to the McCanns and they ran with it. “I just gave them the idea and they took off with it. It didn’t surprise me.” Hendley has golfed all over the world and never fails to be impressed with Gull Lake Golf Course. “This is pretty rare here,” he said. “It is so well run and it’s so pretty. I notice it especially coming from West Texas. It’s not pretty there like it is here.” Eamon McCann said the skins game with the pros is no longer held, but now the event is composed of the adult/child and the pro-am tournies when the pros play with the amateurs. He said it has been successful and he and wife Carla are pleased every year with the support and participation from everyone involved.

New, and tried and true Bentley Fair events By June Norvila
The popular horseshoe events are back again at the Bentley Fair. File Photo
This year’s Bentley Fair and Rodeo Aug. 8 to11 has many tried and true, long-running events and some new events added. The Salute to the Cowboys concert by country music legend Dick Damron will take place at the Bentley Ag Centre on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 8 featuring the Bobby Gosse band. It is expected to be sold out. Advance tickets are available. The concession and doors open at 5:30 p.m. More music will inspire families when One Way Traffic takes to the Bentley Ag Centre stage on Friday, Aug. 9 starting at 1:30 p.m. The local band consists of Joshua Johnson, 15, playing guitar and drums, and doing vocals; Nathan Woyke, 16, on guitar; and Austin Woyke, 18, playing drums and doing vocals. Zach Solberg, 16, who plays guitar and drums, will fill in for Austin for this gig. They play light, popular rock, Christian music. Following right behind at 2 p.m. will be the Canadian a cappella group HOJA from Calgary. They do all music and sounds without any instruments and it is truly amazing to hear what they can do. They perform songs from the Fifties through to the present and can cover every style of music. Something for every age group. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. with a light concession available. Proceeds will go to the Bentley School Chest and Bentley Firefighters Foundation. This is definitely an afternoon family event. Another new free event for kids will be some Giggle Gang Clowning and Entertainment equipment set up in

Also new are come-and-go style events for kids hosted by the Bentley Municipal Library at the library and in their parking lot on the Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bazaart Show & Sale, new last year, has been cut back to one day — Saturday only — at the Bentley Community Hall. Good old proven events include three days of pancake breakfasts, a parade on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m., a senior’s pie social by the Outlet Get-Together Club, and Kids Wool Bustin” (sheep riding). There are also old-fashioned bench exhibits to peruse and free children’s face painting and a magic show in the curling rink. Free laser tag still takes place close to the 16th annual Kroozin’ West Show and Shine along Railroad Avenue along with the Bentley Fire Department’s Concession. The renowned Bentley Farmer’s Market takes place Saturday afternoon. The museum is open with free admis-
sion. There is a two-day horseshoe tournament at the horseshoe courts and two days of rodeo, the 47th edition, and a beer gardens in the arena. There is a rodeo cabaret and dance with live entertainment scheduled on Saturday night in the curling rink. Saturday night winds up for many with the traditional fireworks and a drivein movie shown on the side of the old grain elevator. A cowboy church service takes place Sunday morning at the Bentley Community Church with special guests Ron Friesen, Dwayne Neufeld, and Norm Bonk followed by a free noon chili lunch with potluck salads and deserts in the church’s gymnasium so weather is not a factor. Missing this year will be the farm implement show, the Country Living Fair that was tried last year, and the Cowboy Mounted Shooting competition. Camping is available at the municipal campground; reservations are recommended. Many volunteers and organizations band together at this one time of year to make the four days of the Bentley Fair and Rodeo a great family experience that makes memories.

By Treena Mielke An equestrian coach from Rimbey has once again coached a young rider who represented Canada in the North American Junior Young Rider Championships. Christina Seidel enjoyed working in Lexington, Ky. with Georgia Tooke, a 15-year-old rider from Vernon, B.C. who competed in the North American Junior Young Rider Championships held July 17 to 21. “I travel to Vernon several times a year to do dressage clinics and that is where I connected with Georgia,” she said. “She is lucky enough to have gotten the ride on Magic, who is owned by a friend of ours, also from the Vernon area. Magic is the horse she competed on here in Kentucky.” Seidel said Tooke competed at the FEI junior level, which is open to riders from 14 to 18 years of age. Seidel previously attended the North American young Rider Championships three times with her daughter, Lindsay. “That has given me a good background in what is expected in terms of level of competition, expectations, etc., which certainly makes it easier to take another student like Georgia on the same journey.’ Seidel also has another student from the Sundre area who is planning to tryout for the competition next year. “Lindsay and I are hoping to continue to help young riders achieve their goals of competing at the international level. We both really enjoy teaching juniors and young riders,” she said. Seidel also volunteers as a dressage instructor at the Blindman Valley Pony Club.

Library summer program introduces the arts to children

By June Norvila The Summer Reading Program for 2013 is almost over. Lasting six weeks, there are only two weeks remaining. “I am really enjoying it and the participants seem to look forward to it to,” says Bentley program co-ordinator Sheila Kelba-Warawa. “We have a lot of repeats,” she says, “and average 12 to15 youngsters each session. I want to offer them something that is not junk: something they will treasure to take home each week. And it is a wide age range (to satisfy) each week.” That number is enough for the Bentley Library program room as they work at the tables. Each Wednesday session starts at 1 p.m. with mind games as the youth enter, then there is a book club session where three kids give a verbal book report on one of the books they read. Story time is followed by a bigger craft and then a smaller one before they claim their passport tickets, little prizes, and are dismissed at 3 p.m. There is a small charge and participants are asked to pre-register each week so enough supplies are available and prepared for everyone. On week 4, Warawa was assisted by young volunteers Nina Boettger, Victoria Pacholko and Daphne Boettger. Most of the time these girls volunteer each week. Week 1 was Making Monsters; Week 2 was Creating a Book; Week 3 - Frog Masks; and last week was Drum Making. Participants decorated empty coffee cans and were given a drum stick to ‘beat the beat’ and were allowed outside in the library’s sunny back yard where you could hear the drumming sounds. Hospital receives large donation from developers By Irene Wegmann and Amelia Naismith A huge appreciation for Rimbey’s community, people and services is being funnelled into the Rimbey Hospital Foundation. Herman and Irene Wegmann, on behalf of the development group for Westlake Estates on Gull Lake, presented a $7,000 donation to Colleen Connolley, area manager for Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, on July 22. It’s to be used for items on the foundation’s wish list. The Wegmanns have been part of the lake communities since 1981 and have always taken an active role in local activities. Herman serves as president of the Rimbey Curling Club, and often takes a leadership role in organizing community social activities. He can be observed frequently driving his red tractor in the development, cutting grass or clearing snow, and always welcoming visitors to the area. Irene says Herman likes to be a friend to the community. “That’s just the kind of person he is.” Irene plays accordion, performing regularly at Rimbey Extended Care with groups The Amigos and Mel Fisher and Friends. The Amigos play lake Estates is The Tammy Lynn Wegmann Meweekly at Ponoka’s Centennial Centre for Mental morial Wildlife Preserve. Man bites Mountie in arrest altercation In the last week, the Rimbey RCMP responded to 55 calls for service. Highlights include apprehending mental health patients, domestic disputes, theft and other criminal matters. On July 19, officers responded to a call at a campground in Rimbey where it was reported an intoxicated man was brandishing a large knife in a threatening manner. When police arrived on scene they located the man and a struggle ensued. The 30-year-old man, a resident of Calgary, was arrested and treated for minor non-life-threatening injuries. During the arrest, the man bit one of the officers, who was later

HINDE Joseph Gordon
May 11, 1943 - June 9, 2013
Joe Hinde, beloved husband of Carollyne Hinde of Chestermere, Alberta, passed away on June 9, 2013 at the Agape Hospice after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Joe was born at Trochu, AB to Joe and Rosalind Hinde. He grew up on the family farm at Elnora, attending school there until high school. He then went to Red Deer for his senior high years. After graduation he worked for Shell Oil then joined AGT. He received his Electrical Certification from SAIT in 1985. Farming was always Joe’s passion, and, in 1974 he took over the Hehr farm east of Crossfield where he still has his farm. As well as being a farmer, Joe was also a Grain Buyer. He bought grain for many years in the Crossfield, Cochrane, Olds, Carstairs, Hanna, Drumheller, Water Valley and Hight River regions. He started his career with Elders Grain out of Australia in 1974 to establish a pea grain industry in the Calgary region. He worked for Can Amera/Bunge for eighteen years before retiring. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Rosalind Hinde, and first wife, Donna (Hehr).
