Roan one Heck of an ambassador JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor The greatest pass in the Canadian Football League this season might come from a four-year-old Stettler boy. Roan Heck and his friends from the Calgary Stampeders are passing on a safety message in a TV commercial scheduled to air this fall. “Whatever game you play, play it safe,” Heck reiterated from his backyard last Friday, a week after he filmed the commercial at McMahon Stadium with Keon Raymond and Brandon Smith of the Stampeders. Heck was just one-anda-half years old when he lost his left leg in a lawnmower accident in June 2010. Three years later, he’s been chosen as the War Amps national safety ambassador for 2013. A visit with Roan at his family’s farm south of Stettler indicates how natural a fit he is to spread the safety message on TSN football broadcasts, beginning on Thanksgiving weekend. At home, he can be heard even before he’s seen. “Hello,” he greets a visitor while sporting a big smile and his personalized Stampeder jersey — Roan, No. 13. He runs around the house on his prosthetic leg and shows the personality that’s already made the energetic kid a winning ambassador. His parents, Neil and Jolene, and siblings Cole and Gabby witnessed Roan do likewise a week earlier during a day of filming in Calgary.

Four-year-old Roan Heck of Stettler jumps on the trampoline in his backyard last Friday, repeating his War Amps play-safe message. “He did a great job,” Neil said. “We’re really proud of him. “He liked the experience. They did some real neat stuff that you’ll see in the commercial. It kind of shows what Roan is about and where he comes from and all that stuff.” His parents were among those people impressed with how well Roan handled almost three
hours of filming with the Stampeders in the afternoon heat, and more voiceovers taped that evening at the hotel. “It showed what he’s capable of,” Jolene said. “After we were done filming, we kind of look at Roan differently now. How he could step up and be so mature, because he’s only four years old. And how they’d have him repeat his
lines over and over again. It was so hot, and he’s wiping the sweat off his forehead., but he just kept on going.” Seemingly at home on the football field, Roan’s animated ways set the pace for the Stampeders participating in the publicservice announcement. “He was involved with it all,” Neil said. “The players were good, too. If he wasn’t quite in the mood, they’d
get him going in the mood. And lots of time, he’d get them in the mood, too. It was kind of a trade-off back and forth. “At 1 o’clock, they came out of the dressing room and right away, they were, ‘How ya doin’ little man, give me five.’ They were all over him. “Keon Raymond has four kids of his own, so he knew exactly what he was
getting into. There were no surprises for him. It’s just like another day at the office at home. “Brandon Smith was fantastic, too. There was a reason they were chosen for the commercials. They’re good characters and they do a lot for the community around (Calgary), as it is.” ‘Heck’ continued on Page A2
Mirror man goes missing in Alix area The Bashaw RCMP detachment is requesting public assistance in the search for a 66-year-old Mirror man missing since last Friday. “William (Bill) Graham left the Alix dump at noon on Friday, July 26, and hasn’t been heard from since,” Bashaw RCMP Const. Charla Ethier said Monday afternoon in a news release. “Bill is described as five-foot-six, medium build, with grey hair, and was last seen wearing a blue diamond print shirt, blue slacks and loafers.” Police said Graham uses two walking canes and can’t travel fast on foot. “Bill left the dump in his two-tone blue and grey 1991 Chevrolet extended cab pickup truck,” Const. Ethier said. “The Alberta licence plate on the vehicle is YVF 602 and the tailgate is being held on by two bungee cords.” Police say they’re concerned about Graham’s well-being and are searching for him on behalf of his family. “Should you have any information in regards to his whereabouts, please contact your local police agency,” Const. Ethier said. — Independent

Communities in Bloom judges Steve Preston (second from left) of Brampton, Ont., and Evelyn Alemanni (middle) of Escondido, Calif., admire the downtown Stettler streetscape last Friday with town representatives Rob Spencer (left), Graham Scott, Lee Penner and Grace Fix.
Stettler shows its stuff to judges JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor For miles en route to Stettler from the Edmonton airport last week, two Communities in Bloom judges marvelled at the colourful and expansive canola fields that dot the Prairie landscape each summer. “I was busy looking at all the beautiful countryside,” said Steve Preston of Brampton, Ont. That backdrop set the tone for the international judges’ tour of Stettler last Friday in the company of representatives of the town
and the Heartland Beautification Committee. “We came in through the canola,” said a smiling Evelyn Alemanni of Elfin Forest, Calif. “My first impression of Stettler was it’s so clean. It’s very wellorganized and clean.” Such cleanliness is one of the considerations in the judging criteria, Preston said. “Wherever you go in town, it’s just spotless. Litter is not an issue with this community, which everybody should be very proud of.” Already decorated with awards in past Communities in Bloom
contests, Stettler has enhanced its case this year with the completion of a downtown streetscape project that not only includes bright and blooming planters, but also a community trademark in railwaydesigned sidewalks. “Our main downtown streetscape is probably our focal point, now that it’s reached maturity and is completed,” Lee Penner, the town’s director of parks and leisure services, said during the judges’ daylong tour on a sunny Friday. “The judges’ reaction is quite positive. You can certainly see when they perk up to the information
that’s being given to them. They’re well-studied. They know exactly what they’re looking for.” Indeed. Communities in Bloom is not an outdoor beauty pageant, so to speak. “We’re not here to peek in people’s yards and look at their flowers,” Alemanni said with a hearty laugh while touring — and photographing — the Stettler Town and Country Museum. “(It’s a misconception) because of the name. People think, ‘Well, it’s a flower contest.’ Continued on Page A9

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT NEWS A GREEN TIP: “No more bottled water”
Keep money in your pocket and water bottles out of the landfill by using a refillable container with tap water. Each litre of bottled water requires 3 litres of water to produce. Plastic bottles increase our dependence on fossil fuels since they are made from petroleum products and are often transported long distances. Bottled water privatizes a public resource by making water a profitable commodity controlled by some of the world’s largest corporations. Your local municipal tap water, which your tax dollars have already paid to purify, is your best option. No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the

The CFL players left an indelible impression on Roan. “My favourite football team is the Stampeders,” he declared. “I roped them and pulled them across the field. I ran with them and high-fived them, and I tackled them.” Watching the Stampeders live in their 38-27 win over the Montreal Alouettes that same weekend, “there were (fireworks) shooting up into the air,” he said in demonstrative fashion. “I was cheering for them, waving my flag. (When they scored a touchdown), Quick Six was running as fast as he can.” Jolene said the Hecks “already had a soft spot” for the Stampeders, because the organization had been supportive when Roan was hospitalized in 2010. The War Amps and its child-amputee program, CHAMPS, became familiar with the Hecks after Roan’s accident and believed that he would represent the group and its mandate well. “They had called us early in the spring and asked us if we would be interested in participating in the CFL commercial and doing some footage of our family,” Jolene said. “We thought it would be an honour and a good way to give back to the War Amps for everything they’ve done for us. “Roan is only four years old and they usually want a six- or seven-yearold, so he’s a little bit young, but they had seen him at CHAMPS seminars and saw how much energy he has. They just thought he was a neat little guy that would represent the War Amps well. “So they followed through and did the commercial and all their filming. And after it was all done, they had named him the 2013 national safety ambassador.”
While they’ve embraced all of the attention that has come with Roan’s celebrity role, the Hecks say his smooth adaptability into everyday life makes him “one of the kids” back home in Stettler. “He’s just like another little guy around here,” Neil said. “Everybody knows him. The kids at school, at the arena, everywhere, they know who Roan is. He’s just another guy running around out there. He’s a lot of fun. “And the community support has just been phenomenal.” Roan not only follows his siblings to the rink, he’s going to give hockey a try this fall. He’s bound for kindergarten in September, the same month he celebrates his fifth birthday. The Hecks aren’t dwelling on the past. They’re excited about the future. “We’re making the best of the situation,” Jolene said. “And we owe that (attitude) largely to our community and to the War Amps and specifically the CHAMP program. “Every year, Roan goes to a CHAMP seminar hosted throughout Western Canada, and he has an opportunity to go see kids with the same disabilities he has. It also gives the parents an opportunity to speak to other parents about what it’s like raising a child (who is an amputee).” This year’s seminar is in mid-September at Calgary, where the Hecks hope to see a preview of the commercial that features Roan. “They don’t make reference to Stettler in the (football) commercial part, but in filming the War Amps material, they do talk about Stettler,” Jolene said. “They asked us about our community that we live in, and how that’s been beneficial to Roan through his accident and recovery, and the support in the community. “We had the opportunity to talk about how much support Roan has and how grateful we are, and we couldn’t
imagine living in another community to raise Roan and to be able to give him all the opportunities he’s had so far and in the future, because everywhere we go (in the area), everybody knows Roan and are very supportive of him.” Most of all, he has the daily backing of a supportive family, including siblings Cole, 11, and Gabby, 9. Joining them on the backyard trampoline, Roan belts out his message: “Whatever game you play, play it safe.” He’ll share his story when he gathers with fellow amputees at the CHAMPS Western Canadian seminar this fall. “Roan lost his leg above the knee — he’s an above-knee amputee,” Jolene said. “So he’s just passing on the message to other kids and people out there, ‘Whatever game you play, play it safe,’ is their actual slogan. “It’s just nice to pass that message along to everyone, and hopefully it hits home with people, and they think twice about (the potential hazards of) lawn tractors and operating them. And just whatever you’re doing on a daily basis — or whatever game you play, to play it safely — to maybe avoid future accidents like his.” Roan’s words of wisdom will hit homes across Canada through the Grey Cup. “Although Roan and the players were having a lot of fun filming the PSA, they were also spreading a hardhitting message that will reach thousands of people,” Rob Larman, the War Amps PlaySafe/DriveSafe director, said in a news release. “The Stampeders and the Canadian Football League were tremendously supportive in helping to make this event possible.” The Hecks encourage people to support the War Amps through its keytag and address-label service.

The Stettler Skateboard Park was vandalized last weekend as graffiti tarnished the facility, police reported.
RCMP report
Vandals paint skate park with graffiti-fuelled ‘attack’ SGT. DUNCAN BABCHUK Stettler RCMP detachment Late Friday night or early Saturday morning, vandals spraypainted graffiti inside the Stettler Skateboard Park. The painting was noted early Saturday morning by RCMP investigators driving past the park. The outdoor-arena park is used by young and old skateboarders,
inline skaters and BMX riders from the area — and the mischief appears to be a direct attack on the users of the facility. On Monday morning, Stettler town maintenance workers began removing the fresh paint from the park area, in an effort to prevent further acts of vandalism. Everyone is reminded that spraying graffiti is not a victimless crime, as business owners and residents must incur the cost of removing the
offending paintwork. It’s believed that the offenders threw the empty spray-paint cans into the nearby creek. Their criminal activity comes just as the town is conducting major fundraising to build a new park. The RCMP asks the public for assistance in solving the skateboard park crime. Anyone with information is asked to call the local detachment at 403-742-3381 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

SGT. DUNCAN BABCHUK Stettler RCMP detachment Last Tuesday, at 5:23 a.m., Stettler RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting a break, enter and theft from the Stettler Esso on 50 Avenue. At the service station, the large front window had been smashed, there were a number of food and clothing racks knocked over and the spot where the ATM was previously located had four bolts remaining in the floor. Local video surveillance showed that a pickup truck drove to the front of the store. A male wearing a ball cap, dark hood and gloves exited from the driver’s door, went to the back of the truck, opened the tailgate and pulled out a tow strap. Someone appearing to be a female exited the passenger-side door and then stood near the gas pumps. The truck then pulled forward and backed up to the window. The male then smashed the window with what might be a hand cart, then placed the cart in the back of the truck. The female then entered the store through the window with the strap, placed it over the ATM and then exited the store. The truck pulled forward, pulling the ATM toward the window, where the strap came off of the ATM. The female and male entered the store again and the male carried the ATM and placed it in the back of the truck. The truck then departed west from the station. The truck appeared to be a Chevrolet diesel, as the truck had a distinctive rumble when idling. There was a large amount of cash in the ATM at the time of the theft. It was found by a County of Stettler grader operator on Friday at 3 p.m. on Range Road 212, two miles west of Erskine. It was one of three ATM thefts in the central Alberta area that occurred within 48 hours of each other. Last Tuesday, along with the Stettler theft, an ATM was stolen from the Spruce View Esso. Last Wednesday, an ATM was stolen from the UFA at Alix. All thefts appear to be related. The RCMP asks the public for assistance in solving the crimes by calling the local detachment at 403-742-3381 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Egypt: it’s even worse than a crime
1906 ❤ 2013 Established 1906 The leading weekly newspaper of Central Alberta Dedicated to the advancement of the well-being and the preservation of the heritage of our community, which includes Stettler and the County of Stettler.
By Gwynne Dyer Global affairs columnist Two massacres committed by the Egyptian army in one week. At least 130 people killed in the streets of Cairo for protesting against the military coup. It’s worse than a crime (as the French diplomat Talleyrand remarked when Napoleon ordered a particularly counter-productive execution). It is a MISTAKE. It is also a crime, of course. The killing has been deliberate and precise: only trained snipers could produce so many victims who have been shot in the head or the heart. General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Adly Mansour, the tame president he has installed, tell the kind of lies that generals and politicians always tell when this sort of thing is going on, but the reports of the journalists on the scene leave no room for doubt: this is murder. But it is, above all, a mistake. When the army fulfilled the demands of the anti-government demonstrators in Tahrir Square on July 3 by overthrowing the elected president, Mohammed Morsi, after only a year in office, it must have known that his supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood would protest in the streets. And it must have had a plan for dealing with those protests. Soldiers always have plans. The simplest plan would be just to wait the protesters out. The Muslim Brotherhood could put large numbers of people on the streets, but at least in Cairo, even larger number of people would go to Tahrir Square and support the coup. Use minimum force, contain the demonstrations by both sides, and wait for people to get bored and go home. In the meanwhile, push on with the process of rewriting the constitution to remove the Islamic bits inserted last year by Morsi’s party and hold a new referendum to ratify it. By the time fresh presidential and parliamentary elections are held early next year, the Muslim Brotherhood will presumably have found more modern and moderate leaders to replace Morsi — and in any case the secular parties will win the election. Was this really General Sisi’s scenario for the future when he overthrew Morsi’s government? Perhaps: the army’s moderate behaviour in the first week after the coup could support that hypothesis. But it wouldn’t have taken long for the soldiers to understand that things were unlikely to work according to plan. The problem was not so much the imprisoned president’s refusal to legitimise his overthrow by co-operating with the military, or the tens of thousands of peaceful pro-Morsi demonstrators camped out in the streets. Morsi’s non-co-operation was predictable and so were the pro-Morsi crowds, but his supporters were patient and peaceful. Wait another month or so, and most of them would probably go home. In this scenario, the turning point would have come when Sisi or his advisers finally realised that the Muslim Brotherhood could wait it out, too. Whatever the intervening process, if the Brotherhood was really free to run again in the promised election next year, it might win again. That would be catastrophic for the army’s very privileged position in Egypt — so the Brotherhood had to be excluded from politics. That is a charitable take on the army’s motives. The likelier explanation, alas, is that Sisi planned to ban the Brotherhood from the start. Democracy be damned: the “deep state”, that permanent collusion between well-fed Egyptian soldiers and bureaucrats and the foreign military and commercial interests who feed them, is making a come-back. And the political idiots on Tahrir Square are cheering it on. Either way, the army’s political project now requires the massive use of force: the supporters of the Brotherhood must be driven from the streets, by murder if necessary, and its leaders must be criminalised and banned. And other political idiots, in Washington, London and Paris, are going along with that, too. President Barack Obama is uncomfortable with what is happening, but he won’t call it a coup because then he would be obliged to cut off $1.5 billion a year in aid to the Egyptian army.Instead, he calls it a “post-revolution transition,” and promises that the United States will be a “strong partner to the Egyptian people as they shape their path to the future.” His loyal sidekick William Hague, the British Foreign Secretary (also known as “Tonto”), asks the Egyptian authorities politely to refrain from violence because “now is the time for dialogue, not confrontation.” ’Fraid not. Now is the time for murder, and foreign democrats are holding the murderer’s coat. Egypt is the biggest Arab country by far, and so long as the democratic revolution prospered in Egypt, you could still say that the “Arab Spring” was changing things for the better, even despite the calamity in Syria. But it’s very hard to see how the Egyptians can find their way back from where they are now. Even worse, the Egyptian coup is stark proof that political Islam cannot succeed by taking the democratic path. The message it conveys to devout Islamists all over the Arab world is that Osama bin Laden was right: only by violence can their political project succeed. Thanks a bunch, General Sisi. Materialism, money still ‘a serious matter’
Published by Stettler Independent Management
More and more, I hear Christians being accused of being materialistic. It’s probably true. I remember reading about Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) in dialogue with a religious leader of his day. The churchman said, “We can no longer say as Peter did in Acts 3:6, ‘Silver or gold I do not have.’ ” Aquinas replied (insinuating that a rich, powerful church is also likely to be a weak one), “Nor can we say, ‘But what I do have, I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.’ ” It’s a pretty tricky deal. Somehow we have to exist within the country and culture we find ourselves in, which in our case happens to be quite an affluent one ... yet not be taken with and or controlled by material possessions and money. I spoke with a missionary, who’d recently returned from a teaching foray in the Republic of Cameroon in West Central Africa. In a conversation with a group of African pastors, he happened to mention that he had a savings account in Canada. They were not very impressed with him at that point. They asked him how he could possibly set money aside when there are so many people who are in need. Yet, as Canadians, we understand that if we don’t set something aside for the proverbial “rainy day” or retirement, we will become dependent upon others, or the system. Just to make it more interesting, there is the “prosperity gospel” crowd who believe that it’s God’s will for true, faithful Christians to be prosperous. I happen not to be of this persuasion, though I do believe that the application of biblical principles relative to finance and stewardship

might very well result in our financial status improving. (Incidentally, I define prosperity as having all that we need to sustain us in order that we may serve the Lord better). Materialism is obviously a serious matter. Jesus warned His followers, saying, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15) The apostle Paul wrote later in 1 Corinthians 6:10 that the covetous will not be inheritors of the Kingdom of God! Paul presents a clear, concise comparison in 1 Timothy 6:5,6. He states that those “... who have been robbed of the truth ... think that godliness is a means to financial gain.” In the sixth verse, he presents the proper alternative, explaining that, “… godliness with contentment is great gain.” His focus is clearly on contentment, not collateral. “I have held many things in my hands and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.” — Martin Luther Pastor Ross Helgeton is senior pastor at Erskine Evangelical Free Church.

Rowley rich with buildings, charm from past Last Saturday, July 27, was a very special day in Rowley. As with many towns throughout Alberta, it was their centennial anniversary. Located five kilometres off of Highway 56 on the western edge of the Drumheller-Stettler constituency, it has the old-world charm that’s hard to find these days in our modern society. One of my favourite responsibilities as MLA for Drumheller-Stettler is attending celebrations like the one held in Rowley. This little Prairie gem has only about a dozen permanent residents, but many of the local rural folks show up to express their pride in this richly historic part of Alberta. The town’s appearance is much like it would have been in the early part of the 20th century, with several time-period storefronts that line the main street. The locals have lovingly restored, repaired and rebuilt many of the authentic buildings inside and out. Upon my arrival in this lively little town, the first thing I took notice of was the overwhelming number of people in attendance, enjoying the festivities. My tour guide through many of the historic buildings was Lorraine, who with her husband, have devoted a great deal of time into preserving the treasures that make this little town a must-see. Our first stop on the tour was the train station that comes complete with
From the Legislature MLA Report by Rick Strankman family heirlooms, left to the town by the descendants of the early settlers in the area. Many of the items in the station are authentic equipment that would have been found in a train station in the early 20th century. Our next stop was the schoolhouse that featured the teacher’s living-quarters, which would make even the smallest modern apartment seem palatial by comparison. Posted there on the wall were the rules, circa 1915, that the teacher employed by the community was expected to follow. These rules the teacher was expected to follow, which left little opportunity for anything but work, included “you will not marry during the time of your contract” and “you must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.” The tour continued through town with stops at the grain elevators and the bank, which were critical pieces in the town’s infrastructure during the early 1900s.

Sam’s Saloon is one of the landmarks that makes Rowley “a little Prairie gem.” Lorraine saved the best part of the tour for last — Sam’s Saloon. She had mentioned it several times as we walked through the town, saying, “Once you get in there, I won’t get you out, so we’ll go there last.” After stepping through the swinging saloon doors, I understood clearly what she was talking about. As I stood there in the sawdust that covered the floor, I realized that it was a place filled with
All too often, flood mitigation proves short of common sense Just as the floods receded in southern Alberta, and right on schedule, various government politicians earnestly declared that steps will be taken to avoid the problem in the future. To show their determination to take action — myriad committees, task forces, expert panels, senior officials and other suspects have been ordered into motion to come up with a plan to avert a major flood disaster in the future. If all of that sounds familiar, welcome to the cynics’ club. Past flooding calamities going back to the 1890s have at one time or another seen studies and reports made to deal with the problem once and for all. To be fair, flood-mitigation efforts have taken place over that time and were no doubt instrumental in avoiding many potential disasters. But like generals who are always planning to fight the last war again, those mitigation efforts tended to deal with the most recent flood — not the next big one. Human nature tends to govern that approach. Planners figure that there won’t be a bigger flood the next time. When the inevitable happens, the excuse is that they can’t plan for that one-in-thousand flood scenario. Well, actually you can — but you have to have the courage to not just take
the action, but commit the financial resources to carry it out. There are plenty of reports gathering dust about what should have been done, but the political will and vision was always lacking. It always seems that there is much enthusiasm immediately after a flood to do something — but alas — if in subsequent years there is no flood problem, then the issue seems to fade away. High River continues to be the classic case of flood-planning procrastination that governments continued to support against all common sense, and not the slightest concern to mitigate the real problem. Even today, discussions are about rebuilding the town — for what — to have more buildings ready for the next flood? But I digress. Flood mitigation is not all that difficult. It’s been done in a major way in many parts of the world. All of these panels, experts, etc., don’t have to re-invent the wheel. For instance the Netherlands has had to deal with flooding for the past
2,000 years. Forty per cent of the country lies under sea level and they spent 50 years on a project to push back the North Sea and divert the Rhine River. Those efforts make dealing with Bow River flooding look absolutely trivial. Now common sense might indicate that perhaps we should import Dutch water control experts to resolve our flood problems once and for all. But that’s not likely to happen. In Canada and the U.S., we prefer to reinvent the wheel and learn the hard way. I cite the BSE outbreak as a classic example — Europe went through that nightmare 10 years before Alberta. Did we learn from them — no, our officials actually went out of their way to repeat their mistakes. But I digress — again. If our self-righteous experts are too proud to accept Dutch expertise, then they could actually find it here in Alberta. In southern Alberta, we have a hundred-years’ experience in diverting rivers, building canals and reservoirs for the irrigation
industry. We actually have world-class expertise. That expertise already sees major diversions on the Bow and Oldman rivers into canals. Is it really such a leap to use that experience to create emergency diversions structures to avert future major floods. For instance, much of irrigation infrastructure renovation is now seeing large pipelines replacing canals. So why couldn’t a couple of major pipelines not be built to divert overflow from the Bow River around Calgary. Alberta manages to transport millions of barrels a day of oil out of the province every day. Surely we have the expertise to build a relatively short pipeline to divert a major overflow of water, or is that too much common sense? It’s not like it’s a new concept — the city of Winnipeg in the 1950s built a major floodway around that city and they haven’t seen a flood since. Surely, pipeline technology has advanced enough that Calgary could achieve the same end. But there’s that perennial problem — short memories. As the floodfree years pass — spending say $500 million on a short pipeline would be deemed unnecessary and a waste of money. So don’t hold you breath waiting for any immediate common-sense approaches to flood mitigation.
character and an atmosphere that exemplifies the true values of Albertans. The last Saturday evening of every month is pizza night at the saloon. If you’re in the mood for a great evening out, I highly recommend Rowley. The saloon is owned and operated by the community. Thank you to Lorraine and everyone that made Rowley’s centennial an event I’ll always remember.

hen we depart our earthly home for God’s resting place, it is not how long or brief our stay, but how we lived our lives that counts. Though we may mourn the passing of a loved one, we should also take comfort in the memory of the many kindnesses he or she has performed. We conduct every funeral service as to be a source of comfort and inspiration to the living as well as a worthy and memorable tribute to the departed.

It is definitely important, but only a small part of keeping your car young for a long time. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. Every other oil change some type of inspection should be performed. There are generally two guides: normal and severe service. Look close at the details; if you live in California, Arizona or Florida, the normal guide will work, north of the 49th is all considered severe. Your professional advisor can help decide what items are most relevant to your type of driving, thereby saving you money and breakdowns. The easiest way to stay on top of the maintenance is to follow the seasonal maintenance specials. This gets your professional more closely involved with your car, and they can then give you the best advice. If you can’t find your guide we can get the schedule printed off for your vehicle.

Q: What is an RAHT? A: An RAHT is a Registered Animal Health Technologist,
and they are trained in an assortment of skills to better help the Veterinarian. They monitor anesthesia, assist in surgeries, prep for surgeries, and maintain sterility of instruments and packs used in surgical procedures. They perform x-rays and lab work; including sample collection, complete blood counts, urinalysis, and fecal analysis, and they fill prescriptions under the direction of a veterinarian. They are nurses, looking after hospitalized patients and assisting with appointments. RAHT’s are trained in client care as well as animal care, and are an excellent resource if clients have questions. The Animal Health Technology course is a 2 year program and is offered at a handful of colleges around the province. RAHT’s are a valuable asset to a veterinary team.

It depends on your individual situation. For example if you don’t have enough savings to cover three months bills if you get sick or disabled and unable to work. Then a TFSA is the ideal choice to start a rainy day savings plan, as there’s no tax on the growth. In my opinion, those Canadians making only minimum contributions to their RRSP’s would be better off contributing to a TFSA. This is especially true for those who make regular withdrawals from their RRSPs to cover off emergency cash needs. Seniors with company pensions and collecting CPP and OAS should consider setting up TFSA’s as withdrawals from these plans don’t impact their eligibility for income tested benefits such as OAS or their Seniors Pension Credit. As with all things financial, it’s best to sit down with a qualified advisor and review the pros and cons of TFSAs verses RRSPs for your individual situation. When a company produces a drug, that company is granted a patent on the drug for a certain period of time. During the life of the patent, no other manufacturer is allowed to produce or sell the same drug product without the patent-holder’s approval, which allows that company to market their drug at an increased price. After the patent expires, other pharmaceutical companies may develop, test, and market the same drug, thus producing drug price competition. These identical products contain exact quantities of the same active ingredient in the same dosage form as the original brand name product. Generic drugs are essentially the same equivalent drug as the brand name product, but are a less expensive alternative. Because of this, most drug plans will only cover a percentage of the cost of generic drug, and not of the brand name drug. Ask your pharmacist about ways to save money on your prescription drugs.

Q: I am selling my house. What is the best way to
add value to our home without spending too much money?
A:
Trying to add the most value to your home with the smallest investment can be tricky. You should first consider the location, what the home is worth, who are your prospective buyers are and what the market is doing. Consult your realtor for answers to these questions before doing any Reno’s for resale. I can tell you that if it is acceptable for your situation, vinyl siding is relatively inexpensive and easy to install. It adds curb appeal and can be installed right over some kinds of siding. For the inside, laminate floor can totally change the feel of a place with minimal cost and can be installed in a small amount of time with little inconvenience. A small amount of faux stone may be all you need to add to your curb appeal (although it’s not cheap per square foot) in strategic locations. It may make the difference. Whatever you decide, you should consult a professional prior to proceeding to determine the best product to use to meet the criteria needed to sell your home in a profitable and timely manner.

RUMSEY RECORD By Patty Steen What a weekend of celebrations! First off, Rowley had a big birthday party to celebrate their 100+ years of being a town/village. There is some debate as to how many years they have under their belt but as a grand old lady would say; “It isn’t the number of years that matter, it’s the number of friends that help you blow out the candles!” Lorraine Foesier submitted the following information to me, so thanks for that. Both sides of the street were lined with old cars as the Cruise group “Old cars and an Empty Town” were on hand. We had 4 different cakes, decorated by Jamie Foesier that were magnificent and enjoyed by everyone. Our MLA Rick Strankman and his Drumheller fellow, Pat Turnbull, really enjoyed themselves and were part of the cake presentation. Allen Avramenko, County of Starl a n d C o u n c i l l o r, m a d e a presentation of an old cowboy statue to the community of Rowley that will be placed in a prominent place within the village. We also had a couple weddings and a birth to announce this weekend. Congratulations to Derek Krywcun and Claire Swanson on the exchanging of vows this Saturday. The wedding was held in Huxley at Claire’s parents farm then the reception and dance was held in the Rumsey Hall lat-
er in the evening. Derek purchased Doug Warren’s farm place a year or so ago and they can be found there for the next 50-plus years or so. Also, I would like to send out congratulations to Nicole Johnson and John Clapholt who also celebrated their wedding this past Saturday. Nicole is daughter to Leo and Donna Johnson who have been a part of the Rumsey/Rowley 4-H club along with their three daughters for many years. T h ey w i l l b e r e s i d i n g in the Delia/Craigmyle area as John is a farmer (yeah!!) and Nicole has just completed her nurses degree; well done, Nicole! I heard the flowers for the wedding were exceptional — and I am sorry we missed it. New to our community is Taya Grace Kiemele, born this weekend to Lee and Logan Kiemele; Grandparents Ron and Leone Kiemele. She arrived on Saturday, right on time with a weight of 7lbs 5 oz, healthy, happy and ready to start her new life on the farm NE of Rumsey. Congratulations to the Kiemele Clan. The birthday club was hosted this month by Kendra Kiemele and the celebrants were Henry Greig who has reached the amazing age of 101 years olds! Also, Dorothy Empey, Nora Scheurer, Marie Lorenz, Margorie Austin, Marie Bursen and Watson Reed celebrated their birthdays so congratulations to all of them. Next month will be hosted by Dariel McNaughton.
ENDIANG ENTERPRISE By Les and Rosemary Stulberg The Ron Grover family of Olds and the Don Grover family of Endiang spent a relaxing five days last week touring the area with three horse-drawn covered wagons and one kid’s sized wagon. The wagon train camped a couple nights at Smiths as well as at Boehlke Pond. The group was joined by other family members for camp visits during the trek. It was rather nostalgic to see a wagon train go by. Maureen Wasdal, along with her daughter Mandy Pusey, sister Wilma Paetkau, niece Janean Paetkau and DeAnna Groundwater were in Las Vegas at a NuCerity conference. Maureen was recognized by the company for platinum sales of the skin-care product and Mandy achieved the ruby level, one level above platinum. Congratulations to Maureen and Mandy on their success. Congratulations to Delaine Green, daughter of Dale and Dee Green of Byemoor, and Jonathan Bennett who were married in an outdoor ceremony in Innisfail on Saturday. The Byemoor-Endiang community was
well represented at the wedding. The happy couple will be residing in Calgary. Best wishes to this fine young pair for a long and happy marriage. DONALDA DIARY By Darlene Tantrum You may wonder what is happening at the “Lamp” it is being sandblasted and repainted, to give it a new polished look, this should be completed in the next week. There has been vandalism around the village, with the railway station being broke into, damage at the gazebo and most recently windows broken at the creamery. The museum has taken the challenge to install security cameras in and around the museum properties, including the inside of the village complex.
We hope this deters the culprits from continuing to destroy village property. Mark your calendars August 10th will be a busy day in Donalda, opening the 32nd Annual Bench Fair, starting with a “Gourmet Pancake Bar” not just pancakes but with sausage, bacon or ham, at a cost. Town’s cleanliness, sidewalk concept stand out Continued from front page “But we’re looking at heritage preservation — that’s why we’re here at the museum today,” Alemanni said. “We’re looking at environmental efforts, we’re looking at community involvement, urban forestry, tidiness, landscapes and, of course, flowers. But flowers are just one-sixth of what we’re looking at.” Town officials briefed the judges on many of those elements during a morning presentation in the council chambers. Afterward, the visitors toured the main street and other Stettler focal points. Sporting running shoes and casual summer clothing, the judges looked the part of tourists, albeit with notebooks in hand. They went home armed with a mental scrapbook of Stettler images. “Oh, first of all, the cleanliness (stood out),” Preston said.“Secondly, the new sidewalk concept. Obviously, this history with the railroad seems to be quite prevalent, and to establish it with the sidewalk as a train track motif is really quite unique and very impressive. “What a great idea.” Great ideas are considered a byproduct of the town’s involvement in the Communities of Bloom competition, which goes beyond winning awards. “I think we win by entering and by trying to improve our town,” Penner said. “The improvements I’ve seen over the years, because we’ve entered the contest, I think are the win. And the plaque on the wall is cool, too, but I think we win because of an improved town. “A lot of the time, (the judges’) recommendations are right on. A lot of them, we’ve been able to implement over the years. It’s very valuable.”
Alemanni, also a judge for America in Bloom, said it’s evident Stettler has applied many of the innovative ideas inherent with the Communities in Bloom mandate. “I’m impressed with the investment that (the town) has made in the downtown and the town in general,” she said. “Especially for a town this size.” Preston and Alemanni are judging the international small category, which covers towns with “small” populations. “We started a couple of weeks ago in Lakeside, Ohio,” Alemanni said. “From here, we go to Jasper, and then we go to Fogo in Newfoundland and Antigonish in Nova Scotia. “We get about a five-day break and we’re heading

We’ll visit three communities in England, Wales and Ireland.” The judges are volunteers passionate about what Communities in Bloom represents. “We get to see towns in a way that most people don’t generally get to see them,” Alemanni said. “We get to meet with volunteers, councillors, chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, business owners, and they really open up to us and tell us things about the town that you would never find out about any other way.” It’s a reciprocal relationship with the participating towns. “It’s almost a free consultation,” Alemanni said.

Stettler mosquitoes catch provincial gold JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor The Stettler Sliders didn’t leave anything to chance in winning the provincial mosquito A Tier 3 baseball championship at Red Deer’s sprawling Great Chief Park. The Sliders crushed their competition in both the preliminary and playoff rounds. All of their victories ended prematurely, because of the mercy rule, including a 10-1 win over Coronation in the five-inning final. From their opening 13-1 victory over Red Deer Red, the Sliders — ages eight to 11 — looked and played like the class of the six-team tournament. “They came out flying,” said Stettler head coach Brent Kranzler, whose assistants were Troy Anderson, Glen Morbeck and Jamie Muhlbach. “It’s the same core group for hockey and for baseball — they’re all used to each other, they’re comfortable with each other, and that meshes a team together. Not only are they athletic, they’re friends as well. “They love baseball. It’s unbelievable, just the things they talk about, the things they do, the little things in practices and games. It’s quite neat to watch how, at this age
already, how much they’ve matured. I’m just very excited about the future of these kids, because they’re going to be something else.” The Sliders opted not to add any of the allowable overagers, which in their case would have been two 12-year-old peewees. Stettler’s mosquito travel team was made up of 11 players selected from tryouts involving kids from the town’s three mosquito teams, Kranzler said. “We had to make a few cuts. “In June, we try to pick the team and get a bunch of practices in, because our first provincial playdowns were the third week of June, so we had to have the team picked by the start of June.” The Sliders’ best competition actually came before the provincials in playdowns featuring east-central Alberta teams. Those worthy opponents locally included Wainwright, which won the Tier 1 provincials, and Provost, which took home provincial gold at the Tier 2 level. “In my mind, I think the (regional) playdowns were as good as the Tier 1 provincial round-robin,” Kranzler said. “I mean, all the teams were so close. We tied the Tier 1 champion, we tied the Tier 2 champion, and we ended up
winning Tier 3 quite handily. “But Coronation did give us a run in the playdowns, so we expected a little bit better competition (in the provincial final), but we threw our best pitcher, our bats came alive, and the better team obviously won in the end.” Facing a pair of Red Deer teams, Barrhead, Sherwood Park and Coronation at the provincials, Stettler was seemingly in a league of its own. “I was kind of surprised that (our scores) were lopsided,” Kranzler said. “But for the most part, I knew that the round-robin games weren’t going to be hard. Getting into semis, depending on your pitch count, you could run into problems. But I knew going in that us and Coronation were definitely going to make the final. I thought the final was going to be a lot closer. “But we rested all our good pitchers and our kids’ bats came alive. They came out in a timely fashion. We were getting amazing defence and exceptional offence.” Stettler was 4-0 overall, including a 16-5 preliminary victory over Barrhead and a 14-7 win over Red Deer Blue in semifinal play. Coronation, which beat Red Deer Red 14-11 in the other semifinal, was unbeaten before falling to Stettler in the gold-medal game.

Monday was a day of excitement and joy for Red Deer Rebels defenceman Haydn Fleury. For Rebels forward Conner Bleackley … not so much. Fleury was named to the 22-player Canadian national under-18 hockey team after a four-day camp in Toronto, while Bleackley fell short in his bid for selection. Both players are ranked by Central Scouting as first-round picks in the 2014 NHL entry draft. Fleury lived up to his lofty ranking by being one of seven rearguards picked to the national squad, while Bleackley was simply in too tough amongst a group that was top heavy in top-flight forwards. Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter fully expected Fleury to make the grade and represent Canada in the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, beginning next week in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. “I’m not surprised,” Sutter said. “Haydn has made himself a top-level, elite defenceman. He’s not ranked where he is because he’s an average player. He’s the topranked defenceman in the WHL for next year’s NHL draft.” As for Bleackley . . . “Really, the depth across the country is in the forward group,” Sutter said. “There’s an abundance of real top-end forwards. “I’m sure it’s disappointing for Conner, but for him to be asked to go there (to the under-18 selection camp) is a big plus in itself. “From what I’ve been told, he had a good camp, but they just had a lot of talented forwards in that age group.” Both players will be in the “go-to” category for the Rebels during the 2013-14 WHL season, the second major junior season for both. “They will be two key players for us,” Sutter said. “They’re 17 years of age, but they’ve already been put in key situations as rookies. Now they have to take their game to another level this season. They’ll be counted upon more heavily and they have to step up their game. “For Haydn, going to the overseas tournament will be a great experience and Conner has the experience of playing with those top-end players at the selection camp. Just being part of an evaluation camp like that will certainly help him.” Other Western Hockey League players named to the Canadian under-18 squad are defencemen Joe Hicketts (Victoria Royals) and Ryan Pilon (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and forwards Jayce Hawryluk (Brandon Wheat Kings), Rourke Chartier (Kelowna Rockets), Brayden Point (Moose Jaw Warriors) and Jake Virtanen (Calgary Hitmen). Coach Sutter, meanwhile, will depart Friday for the Canadian national junior team summer selection camp in Brossard, Que. The national team head coach and his staff will run the 35 hopefuls through a two-day camp that will precede a fourteam exhibition tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y., an event that will include the national junior teams from Finland, Sweden and the United States.

COE, Brenda Lea, Sept. 25, 1966 - July 14, 2013 Brenda was born in Drumheller, the younger daughter of Peggy and Doug Nielsen. She received all her schooling there. She passed away at her favorite place, her and Greg’s summer place near Bashaw. Brenda married Greg on June 2, 1990. They lived in Fort McMurray where Greg was employed with Alberta Power. While there she obtained her diploma in Early Learning and Child Care from Keyano College. Brenda worked with special needs children in Central school in Drumheller prior to and after her marriage. Upon moving to Stettler in 1992 she managed and taught at the Share Bear Play School. Her next job took her to the Erskine Hutterite Colony where she taught classes and even coached hockey as part of Phys Ed. She got a huge hoot out of that. Even after illness forced her to resign that position, her former pupils kept in touch and brought her presents for many years. She loved children and they loved her. Brenda was a collector. Her favorite collection was probably her clocks as anyone who was at her home “at the hour” could attest. She loved to cook and entertain. Brenda’s last 10 years were filled with a series of painful and debilitating illnesses. She tackled each with determination and a never failing effort to overcome them. Greg and families did their best to help her through these challenges. However she could not overcome the heart attack that took her life so suddenly. Brenda is survived by her husband Greg; her parents, Doug and Peggy Nielsen of Red Deer, her sister Shawna Forgo (Michael) and their children Chelsea, Cassie and Kyle of Airdrie. She will also be dearly missed by the Coe family; Dick and Mary; Steve (Johara); Brian (Theresa) and their children, Lyndsie and Sam. Caesar, her beloved Shih Tzu will also miss her. If friends desire they may donate in her memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1400 - 522 University Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5G 2R5 or online at their website. In keeping with Brenda’s wishes there was cremation. Her ashes will be interred at Memorial Gardens in Calgary at a later date where there will be a graveside service followed by a private celebration of her life. Brenda was a free spirit who spent her life with a cheerful, sunny outlook that endured in spite of her many challenges. Rest in peace Brenda, you lived your life with good humour and dignity. We will hold your memory in our hearts forever.

It’s a dog’s life — at least some of the times LORI WELBOURNE Independent columnist Last week, while vacationing in B.C., I took my children out for lunch to The Waterfront Grill and Pizzeria in Peachland. It was a hot, sunny day, so we decided to sit in a shady spot on the patio and enjoy the fresh air and sweet view. As I was ordering, I noticed the server’s attention wasn’t focusing entirely on me, as she kept looking at the table behind us as we spoke. I wondered what was distracting her, but I didn’t turn around until I heard voices being raised. By that time, she was at the table she had been looking at, and was politely trying to explain to an older couple that their dog was not permitted on the premises. “I’m really sorry,” I heard her saying. “It’s not up to me, we’re just not allowed to have animals where people are eating.” The couple couldn’t understand why their small dog wasn’t welcome to rest under the table as they ate lunch, and they were annoyed when the server wouldn’t bend the rules for them. When she suggested they set up their pup on the sidewalk, directly beside the table, they were infuriated since the spot wasn’t in the shade. “We’re not eating here then,” the man exclaimed, and they left in anger. I watched them walk down the street, stopping other people with dogs, seemingly explaining their frustrations as they pointed aggressively towards the restaurant. I felt bad for the server. She was just doing her job and may have gotten herself, or her employer, into trouble had she ignored the rules and allowed the dog to stay. She also seemed like the type of person who would have tried to figure out an alternative solution that might have made her customers happy. Maybe seating them at the other end of the patio where there was a shadier spot on the sidewalk could have worked. But the couple left in such haste there wasn’t much of a chance to figure out a solution to their dilemma. “Who in the world brings their dog to a restaurant?” my friend asked as he passed by, walking his own pooch. “They should have ordered a pizza to go and eaten unMoney To Loan

der that tree across the street.” I had to agree with him. As much as I love dogs, and animals in general, I don’t think allowing them in the dining area of restaurants is a good idea. Personally, I wouldn’t have minded if that pup had sat at his owner’s feet since he seemed well mannered, clean and quiet. If the restaurant allowed for him, though, they’d have to allow all dogs wouldn’t they? Even the dangerous, filthy and noisy ones. This isn’t a decision the individual restaurants can make in B.C. anyway. Health bylaws state that, with the exception of guide animals, dogs are simply not allowed in a food-primary

place, and those who don’t comply with those regulations could be heavily fined or even shut down. People walking their dogs and wanting to enjoy a meal while they do have to be creative and plan ahead. As much as some of us love our pets and might want them around at all times like they’re our children, we don’t live in a society where we can do that. Maybe the couple in question could take an umbrella with them the next time they’re out so they can easily create shade on the other side of whatever patio they wish to dine at. Or perhaps they can somehow convince the restaurant that their little Shih Tzu is a seeing-eye dog. You never know, stranger things have happened.
