Million dollar ‘care centre’ opens at zoo By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

KURT LANGMANN PHOTOS

Greater Vancouver Zoo animal health technician Clair Stead shows the distinctive underside of the local western painted turtle. This creature is considered threatened in this area but in recent years the zoo has successfully implemented a breeding program that has released the turtles back into their local environments. The zoo has previously bred and raised the threatened Oregon spotted frogs for release into the local environment, also with success. More photos, page 3.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo officially opened its new Animal Care Centre on Thursday, July 25. It was the culmination of several years’ work in meeting requirements and garnering approvals from various government agencies as well as almost a full year of construction work, but the long-awaited results were worth it, said zoo manager Jody Henderson. The 5,400 square foot facility at the north side of the zoo property will provide all aspects of animal care, from quarantine to food preparation to medical service, all under one roof, in a secure, efficient and safe environment. The custom-designed facility boasts many special features, including treatment and quarantine rooms that are individually climate controlled for the needs of different types of animal species, and skylights that allow natural light for the animals and ponds in the rooms. The building has a total of 23 rooms including: one walkin cooler, one walk-in freezer, a modern kitchen area for food preparation and nutrition, hospital area for the treatment of sick and injured animals and minor surgery with five rooms for overnight or longer term guests, six rooms for animal quarantine, a laundry, veterinarian technician office and laboratory area. The building has a propane heating and cooling system that is environmentally friendly (natural gas is not available in the area), and has back-up generators in case of power outages. A large and modern septic treatment system was especially built for the facility. The final cost of the new centre is approximately $1 million dollars. Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony the group of 80 invited guests were led on a guided tour of the new facility. The tour began in the quarantine section, followed

by the food preparation and nutrition area, and lastly the operating room, where guests learned about the Western Painted Turtles, a new conservation program for the Zoo, and observed a basic health check up on a Savannah Monitor lizard by animal care technician Clair Stead. “After months of eager anticipation the day has finally arrived‌ for the disbelievers in the world, we are truly a bunch of determined people who do not give up easily,â€? said Henderson. “We are so proud to be standing in front of our new Animal Care Centre, even though we are in the very early stages of developing our new facility. We will begin operating immediately as a basic centre for minor check-ups, vaccinations, food preparation and nutritional analysis, and animal quarantine purposes.â€?

Township plan passes — despite Wall farm objections By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

The document which will guide the expansion of Langley Township into a community of more than 200,000 people over the next 28 years was approved last Monday night, by a 6-3

vote of council. The new Official Community Plan (OCP) was opposed by Councillors David Davis, Kim Richter and Michelle Sparrow, because of its vision of a much bigger community and the inclusion, in a new university district

7KH &22/ SODFH WR

around Trinity Western University, of the much-criticized Wall project that puts a housing project in the middle of farmland. The OCP aims to update the existing community plan, which was created back in 1979, with a more modern ap-

proach to planning and development. It projects the near-doubling of the Township population to more than 211,000 by 2041. That will require 37,000 additional housing units, or an average of 1,300 new homes every year.

Richter was worried about the effect the growth will have on the 19 wells that currently supply half the Township’s drinking water. “If we’re going to double our population, water won’t stay cheap, Richter said. SEE: Page 3

Charity barbecue stolen By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Numerous charities across Langley will be left scrambling after a heartless thief or thieves made off with one of Otter Co-op’s commercial-sized barbecues, which are lent out to non-profit organizations. “It’s booked all summer long for charity events. We also supply the propane,” said Jack Nicholson, Otter Co-op general manager. “The thief didn’t just steal a barbecue, he stole from the whole community.” For five years now, Otter Co-op has lent out a barbecue to all sorts of associations, sports and school

groups to help them raise funds through barbecue sales. It was so necessary and successful, Otter Co-op actually went out and bought another. On Sunday night, at 2 a.m., thieves cut the the locks of the enclosure that a barbecue was stored in, at Otter Co-op’s store at 248 Street and Fraser Highway. Police are on the case but members of the community are too. “We posted it on our Facebook page and that day we had 116,000 people view it,” said Nicholson. “We’ve had great community support on this.” Numerous people have com-

mented on the theft, many saying how low the thief went to steal from a charity. Others are reposting across the Lower Mainland and others are saying they have seen sightings of it. Insurance will replace the barbecue, but it will take a while. Nicholson is just hoping the thief does the right thing and return it so charities can use it again for the summer. The barbecue has “Otter Co-Op” logo on it. A similar industrial-sized barbecue was taken from Lepp Farm in Abbotsford last week. If you know anything about this theft, call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

“I don’t feel the need to double the population of Langley,” Davis said. “It’s too rapid.” Davis called the Wall proposal a “huge issue” for him. “I can’t support the university district with Wall’s piece of property in there.” Both Richter and Davis tried to get the wording of the OCP adjusted to address some of those concerns, but couldn’t muster enough support. Mayor Jack Froese spoke for the majority when he said the new plan might not be perfect, but it represents a big improvement over the old plan and it can be adjusted over the future. “It does provide us with a road map to get us forward,” Froese said. “This is a very important document.” The OCP now goes to Metro Vancouver regional district for review, and hoped-for approval, before it comes back to council for a final vote and implementation. However, the Township and Metro Vancouver are also embroiled in a lawsuit involving the university district, so approval is far from a done deal. Residents of Forest Green manufactured home park, who staged a protest at the July 10 council meeting, were on hand to speak about the OCP. Their presentation followed an information meeting for the residents on July 17, attended by most council members.

Pool project putting tax payers in the deep end

Founded in 1957

Owned by Black Press B.C.

27118 Fraser Hwy. Aldergrove, B.C. V4W 3P6

Editor: The Aldergrove pool/arena project now has a planned cost of $53 million, up 50 per cent from the original $35.5 million forecast. Could not our well-paid Township politicians sense that the project would be way over budget? I wonder how many of our Township employees who make $100,000 or more a year worked on this, and how they could be so wrong. The news article quotes Township parks and recreation director David Leavers as saying “Staff would only be confident in moving forward at this time with a total project budget of approximately $50 million.” The excuse offered, according to the news article, was that there was a nine per cent discrepancy of square footage from concept to detailed plan. The financial plan offered is that they hope to get some cash from the federal and provincial governments, and trim a few features. Then they say “we have to add another $3 million for roads and services.” Council set some parameters and approved a $35.5 million project, but staff are comfortable at a $53 million total. When the project opens, you’ll find the taxpayers in the deep end of the pool and the penalty box of the arena, while the politicians and civil servants have a photo-op, cutting a ribbon and congratulating themselves. VICTORIA – B.C. NDP president Moe Sihota says an external review of the party’s performance in the May election will “look very much at the DNA of the NDP.” Early signs are not encouraging. Start with the fivemember panel announced to conduct the review. The required “labour” representation is in the person of Cindy Oliver, president of the union representing college and university instructors, and Andy Ross, ex-president of COPE 378, which represents BC Hydro employees among others. Another appointee is NDP MP Jinny Sims, a former president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. If the party wants to further solidify its image as a lobby group for pension-subsidized government unions, it’s off to a great start. The terms of reference defy parody. In addition to unions, the panel required “more than one woman.” A sub-committee may be struck, if it has representation from “youth, women, labour, visible minority, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisesexual, transgendered, questioning).” I presume the party’s lengthy anti-harassment policy will be read out to begin all meetings. Once they finally get down to business, the list of election campaign details they must examine is long. In addition to that, they must review “stakeholder relations includ-

NDP soul search Cull the crows, please going nowhere

ing community leaders, business, social movement, ethnic communities, environmental movement, affiliated unions and the labour movement.” One of the excuses offered by leader Adrian Dix for the party’s defeat was the loss of 40,000 jobs in the B.C. forest industry. The suggestion is that those people left for Alberta, and if they were still here, they would have voted NDP. That presumed solidarity has never existed in the private sector, and in fact the highestpaid union workers have good reason to vote for lower taxes. To confirm B.C. and Canada’s “progressive” tax system, all they have to do is look at their pay stubs. The mandate for this review mentions not one actual public policy issue. Here’s one the committee might kick around. Having lost the 2009 election campaigning against the carbon tax, the NDP is now calling for it to be increased and extended to greenhouse gases produced by industrial process emissions. A simple example is a cement kiln, which burns fuel to reach the temperature at which the components are partially burned and cement is produced. Cement manufacturers pay carbon tax on the fuel, whether it’s natural gas or shredded tires, but not on the process. B.C. cement makers are

already pleading for relief, because the fuel-intensive process puts them at a price disadvantage with U.S. and Chinese producers. Further unilateral tax action by B.C. would only further increase imports, and potentially push B.C. firms out of business. Goodbye unionized private sector jobs. Dix’s last foray in question period before the summer legislature session adjourned was a demand for the government to order BC Ferries to build its next three ships in B.C. Leave aside the NDP’s uncritical zeal for state control, and their ill-fated experiment with aluminum fast ferries. The most likely bidder for this work is Seaspan, with shipyards in Esquimalt and North Vancouver. Seaspan is hiring almost 2,000 people to build ships for the Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard. It will be flat out to get that done, and the company president can’t yet say if it has the capacity and skilled labour to bid on BC Ferries ships too. Seaspan has to operate in the real world of limited resources. So does the NDP, but it’s not clear if they can find a way out of their thicket of special interests and stale economic notions. As a longtime resident of the Bradner/Mt. Lehman area, I have long been aware of the controversy regarding blueberry cannons. The crows are the prime culprit in our valley which grows blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, among other produce. I had to shut down my roadside stand because I couldn’t keep the crows away. The crows invade our property by the hundreds every time cannons in the distance blast them away from somewhere else. Streamers and scarecrows don’t work. It is extremely frustrating. My question is: Why can’t we cull the crows? They are basically flying rats. They came over originally from Asia just like the rats did. They spread disease. They also are highly susceptible to West Nile virus. They are constantly spreading garbage all over. If our city was overrun by rats, wouldn’t we cull them? Then why not the nasty crows that have made farmers’ and residents’ lives miserable for so many decades? They have no natural enemies and can multiply uninterrupted. Nobody likes having to kill anything, and I know there is always going to be opposition to any kind of cull, but please, let’s revisit the possibility and get a handle on this over-blown population. C. Perry, Bradner

No to industry in ALR

Editor: Most recently I have read the very disturbing news of more land being removed from the ALR in the Bradner area. As a transplanted city dweller moving into Abbotsford I am very concerned and disappointed to hear of this proposal. I have moved to this area to get away from the hubbub of industrial city life to live in the country. One only needs to drive by this vibrant, growing farming community to see the diverse and wonderful quality of life Bradner affords us in the “City in the Country”. Soon if things go the way of our council we will just be another giant city using up arable space. I fail to see the argument of the developer stating this would be to the benefit of Abby and the Airport? Really do we need more truck traffic on Bradner Road and the congested Mt. Lehman intersection? Does the money he offers per acre reflect on the needs of the city or the need for the purchase of cheap farm land? Seems to me this land grab is about the developer trying to purchase land at the expense of agriculture and the future of our children. The world cannot support its ever growing population and at this time can not feed itself with the shrinking farm lands in this world. Would another high density industrial park help? No! I ask that those involved at the ALC look to our future need for food and not a cement factory or fabrication shop for some trivial want. Food is our future not a new TV or couch. To err is humorous: Bard in the Valley By BRENDA ANDERSON Aldergrove Star

What’s more fun — and causes more chaos and confusion — than a pair of separated identical twins? That would be two pairs of twins, in the capable hands of the Bard. And that is just what William Shakespeare has given audiences with The Comedy of Errors, this summer’s offering from Langley’s Bard in the Valley theatre company. The play about a pair of wealthy aristocratic brothers and their sibling servants — who wind up in the same city after each was separated years earlier from his identical twin during a storm at sea — will run on the Spirit Square stage in Douglas Park in August. Then it will move to the International Festival in Willoughby at the Langley Events Centre for two performances. Directed by Langley’s Darcy J. Knopp, the fourth annual BIV production features performers from New Westminster and south of the Fraser – from Surrey and Cloverdale to Abbotsford and Chilliwack – with seven Langley actors in the mix. For two years, Knopp was one of those performers – acting in the first two Bard in the Valley productions in 2010 and ’11. After taking last summer off, he is excited to be returning to take charge of this year’s production. “I was looking for a chance to do a show in Langley, said Knopp, who now calls Sts. Aldergrove Dodgers Ready to Host B.C.

A new scoreboard was installed at Aldergrove Athletic Park’s big ball diamond last week, in time for the B.C. Bantam Baseball Championship tournament this week. The tourney runs from July 31 to August 4 at Aldergrove, hosted by the Aldergrove Dodgers and Her-icanes.

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

Aldergrove Dodgers’ Liam McKinnon slides back into first base safe in their game against Surrey Angels, Friday, July 26 at Aldergrove Athletic Park.

In Senior Men’s Baseball action, the Aldergrove Giants have started to climb their way back up the standings. After starting the season a disappointing 1-6, the Fox and Hounds Giants have gone 5-3 in the tough Bill Mather’s Division of the LMBA. Giants’ pitching continues to be their strength, and veteran Giants’ starters Jacob Harder and Trevor Cieszecki have been outstanding. Harder is among league leaders in several categories including innings pitched, wins, strikeouts and ERA. Cieszecki, despite work commitments, has been solid in his starts or relief efforts. Trevor Kuby has come in when needed and continues to improve with each outing. Second year pitcher Mark Filiatrault has seen limited innings but has the potential to be a starter. The Giants have missed Robin Fuller this year and hope he will be available for upcoming games. Veteran Giants players Gavin MacLeod, Trevor K, Jacob H, Trevor C, and Tyler Jones have led the way offensively. Trevor K leads the team in hitting with a 404 average and two home runs. Jacob H is next, hitting 383, workhorse catcher Gavin Mac is hitting 348 and two home runs and leads the team in RBIs. Tyler Jones has been one of the most consistent Giants all year and slugged his first LMBA grand slam and is hitting 343. Trevor C has found his power stroke and has also smacked two homers. Several key Giants veterans have struggled at times due to lack of games played, because of work, family or school commitments. Greg Moffat has only played in eight games this year, but is still hitting a respectable 274, but has the skill to turn the game around with one swing. Dan Kivinen has worked hard to come back from serious injury and continues to improve each game— he is one of the bunters in the league and has laid down some beauties, is hitting 254 and is the league’s best right fielder. All star centre fielder Jordan Fatkin has missed several games due to work commitments but his defence has been great. Domingo Guarenas has struggled at the plate this year due to injuries but

like Greg M can win a game with one swat. Rookie Trevor Lowrie has a good eye at the plate and his average will climb as he gets more at bats and experience, much the same for second year Giant Mark F. Steve Borth has provided the Giants with solid defensive play at several key positions including shortstop, catcher, second and third base. Steve has hit for a lower average than previous seasons but can provide a key base hit at any time when needed. Giant newcomer Tyler McMillan has only played five games but he has a high skill level at the plate and on the field, Giants are looking to sign Tyler to a long term contract. Will Beatty has played only six games but has the ability to be contribute both on offence and defence. Spares Brian N and Mike S have only played two games each. The Giants were counting on two very good players Ryan Jensen and David Butler but each has only played two games due to work commitments and injury. The Giants have one league game left on August 10 in South Surrey, this will celebrate the LMBA’s 25th anniversary of existence. They are one of the largest organized leagues in Canada with 30 teams spread out in three categories: +18, +30, and +45. All games will be played Aug 10 and 11 at South Surrey Athletic Park. The Giants would like to thank the Fox and Hounds for their continued support. The Giants would also like to thank AMBA for the use of their field box, and for their help with our schedule. Special note and good luck to the AMBA’s Bantam AA and AAA teams. AMBA will be hosting the Bantam AA Provincial Championships this weekend, and our Bantam AAA team will be hosting the Bantam AAA Western Canadian Championships, August 14-18. This will be the first time a team from Aldergrove will compete in a AAA Western Canadians. Job well done to AMBA President Patrick Sellinger and field coordinator John Begg, Lyall Sharman, all the coaches, executive and volunteers. Once again our community has shown that we are among the best in Canada.

‘Legion Track’ champ-volunteer continues on Olympic path By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star

Georgia Ellenwood was a three-time participant at the Canadian Legion track and field championships, but the first time they are being held in her own back yard — Langley’s McLeod Park — she will be volunteering instead of competing. But that’s OK with the Langley teen. “I prefer to travel (for my competitions) anyways,” she said with a laugh. Instead, Ellenwood will help out as part of the hurdles crew. The championships, which will also be held at McLeod Park in 2014,

run from Aug. 9 to 11. They feature 1,000 of the top youth athletes in the sport from across the country, and many of them may be just like Ellenwood and go on to represent Canada in their later years. Ellenwood, who turns 18 on Aug. 5, is one of Canada’s preeminent track and field stars. She is representing Canada at the Pan American junior championships in Colombia at the end of August — her third international competition — and then leaves for her freshman season with the University of Wisconsin

Badgers track and field team. All of this is in pursuit of her ultimate dream of representing Canada at the Olympic Games. She is being touted as a potential participant for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Competing at the Legion track and field championships in 2010 as a 15-year-old was a real eye-opener for Ellenwood. The Legion championships are an annual track and field meet for the top Canadian youth between the ages of 12 and 17. Prior to that event, Ellenwood was accustomed to dominat-

The month before the Athletic Excellence at the Legion championships, B.C. Summer Games. But this was her first she won four gold medals and was awarded the time at a national meet

and while she still did extremely well — a gold in the high jump, silver in the long jump, 1600 sprint relay and the 4x100 relay, and also fourth in the 200m hurdles — it was an eye-opener for someone who was used to finishing first in every event they entered. “Before that, I was winning everything,” Ellenwood said. “And then I got there, and saw the competition and it was kind of humbling.” The experience taught her something. “After that, I knew what it took to get to the top,” she said. “I realized I really needed to work if I

wanted to get there.” Ellenwood attended the Legion championships twice more, winning gold in the heptathlon in 2011 and then gold in the 200m and long jump in 2012. She has already represented her country internationally, both at the world youth track and field championships in 2010 in France and then at the world junior track and field championships in Spain last year. Both times she competed as an underage athlete. Next up will be Colombia and then hopefully, in three years time, Rio de Janeiro and the Olympics.
