Town testing compost program BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

HOT DIGGITY DOG — Betty Martin grilled hotdogs to perfection and then served them for free on Friday during National Hotdog Day festivities sponsored by Creston Valley Realty, which had a hotdog tree and cake (on page 2) at its office. Although it was celebrated a few days late (it actually falls on July 23) this year, Creston Valley Realty plans to make it an even bigger event next year.

A pilot program to test the viability of a compostable material program is underway in Creston. For the past two months, 20 residents around town have set out small green wheeled bins for pickup each Saturday. In those bins is a surprising variety of waste material, including meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and bones — virtually any kitchen waste. Also, yard debris and even torn-up pizza delivery boxes are included. “This is a council strategic priority,” said Iain Bell, engineering and public works director. “Compostable material is picked up every Saturday by the town crew and dropped at the waste water treatment plant.” See PROGRAM, page 3

Schedule conflict bumps roller derby from CDCC BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

TODAY'S WEATHER

A scheduling conflict has forced Creston’s Black Eyed Cherries and the

East Kootenay Roller Derby League to move their Aug. 10 games to Sparwood. “There are a few different stories going around town,” said Amanda Kerr, one of the team’s founding players, on Monday.

oting is now underway for the We Heart Local Awards, which celebrate local food and agriculture across B.C. According to buylocaleatnatural.com, which runs the contest, it is “a first-of-itskind popular choice awards program inviting all British Columbians to recognize and elevate your favourite key players across the food and agriculture industry throughout our province.” Nominations were open July 1-15, and voting runs until

Aug. 5. All voters and nominators are automatically included into a prize draw for a chance to win 1 of 20 $100 gift cards to their local farmers’ market, as well as a weekend wine getaway in the Okanagan. Locally, the Creston Valley Farrmers’ Market has been nominated for favourite farmers’ market, Kootenay Alpine Cheese Co. for favourite cheese maker, Purple People Feeder for favourite food truck, and Cherrybrook Farms in both the U-pick farm

and orchard/fruit supplier categories. For more information and to vote (once

Arena scheduling From page 1 When the local services committee (Binks, Area B director John Kettle, Area C director Garry Jackman and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota) “asked if putting the ice in early would affect any bookings and the staff said no,” Binks said. “Apparently the computer scheduling system didn’t pick up the conflict until it was too late. Nobody feels good about this.” Kerr said Creston fans are biggest supporters of the league, drawing several hundred to league games. “This could mean a loss of $4,000 to $5,000 in income to the league,” she said. Binks is contributing $500 from Area C funds to help offset the expenses incurred by the Black Eyed Cherries, a gesture Kerr said is appreciated by the team. “The rec centre has tried to make it work and they are trying to make

it right, but it’s still frustrating. We booked the space last November,” Kerr said. “We’ve worked really hard this year and we have had lots of ups and downs, but we are still pushing through.” An offer to use the arena for free on the August long weekend wasn’t accepted because most players on the four teams scheduled to play had already made other plans. “We called around and Sparwood was the only arena that was available on Aug. 10,” she said. On that day, Creston will take on the Avalanche City Roller Girls in the first game and then the Mountain Town Maulers will play the Killer Rollbots. Cranbrook will play host to the league’s championship weekend on Sept. 14/15. “We will make sure to schedule our August games earlier in the month next year so we can be sure this won’t happen again,” Kerr said.

Goat River swimmers urged to be careful near Canyon bridge BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The popular swimming hole upstream of the Goat River Bridge on Canyon-Lister Road empties into a 20-foot waterfall.

CARRIERS NEEDED for these available routes:

Swimmers in Goat River upstream of the Goat River Bridge on Canyon-Lister Road need to exercise caution, warned Creston Fire Rescue Chief Michael Moore after a male in his early 30s became trapped in the canyon on July 24. “The popular swimming spot on the north side of the bridge is near a cascading waterfall that drops down about 20 feet,” he said. “The water is rapid and could easily pin or trap a person against a rock, being too swift to get out of [and] would lead to a drowning easily.” The call that the fire department initially received was that there was a possible drowning in the canyon, but it turned out that the male was stuck.

Firefighters planned to make a rope rescue, but the male managed to climb up the west bank before Creston Fire Rescue arrived. He was checked over by BC Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene, and was released. As this situation proved, it is possible to survive being washed down the falls, but once a person is at the pool below, getting out of the river is difficult — it continues about a quarter-mile to the hydroelectric dam with sheer rock walls making an exit difficult. “In some cases over the past several years, rope rescues have taken place where individuals purposely go down into the area below the bridge thinking they can get out, but once down into the bottom it is virtually impossible to climb their way out,” said Moore.

Water saving measures in effect Advance Staff

Lack of rainfall, and high demand due to hot weather has prompted stage 2 water conservation measures to be put in effect for Creston and Erickson. At this time, watering of lawns is permitted only from 6-10 a.m., and watering of gardens, trees and shrubs is permitted only from 7 p.m.-10 a.m. Watering of gardens, trees and shrubs by watering can or handheld hose is still permitted anytime. “Stage 2 water conservation measures will remain in effect until further notice, and stricter water conservation measures will be implemented if demand does not decline,” said a press release issued by the Erickson water office. Erickson water conservation measures are available on the Regional District of Central Kootenay website, www.rdck. bc.ca, and Town of Creston measures are available at www.creston.ca.

Creston resident killed in Oyama ATV accident

Program will determine composting future

Advance Staff

From page 1 At the same time, there are two bins available at the farmers’ market every Saturday for public use.” The pilot program is intended to provide data to help determine what it would take to extend pickup throughout town. “At the end of the pilot we will have to assess the amount of diversion from the landfill, cost of pickup, reduction of greenhouse gases and present an option to council or their partners (Regional District of Central Kootenay/First Nations) for a town-wide initiative,” said Bell. “This would obviously have a budget impact as there would be additional costs in the form of increased staffing, purchase of containers, possible vehicle purchase, management of the compost (mixing and turning, etc.), disposal/sale of compost, possible odour issues, permitting with Ministry of Environment, site selection, etc. “As a participant, I used to put out a “kitchen catcher” size bag weekly for pick-up, now I can go up to three weeks before that has to go out, so I notice a big change.” Door-to-door pickup of compostable waste isn’t entirely new in town. Each spring and fall pickup days are announced so that residents can have their yard and garden waste hauled off by town employees. Extending the program to include regular pickup has been discussed by past town councils. With data from the pilot program, town staff will work under council’s direction in 2014 to create a business plan for the pickup and recycling of “green waste.”

A Creston resident was one of two people who died July 18 in the Okanagan, the BC Coroner Service reported on July 23. An all-terrain vehicle left Oyama Lake Road and went down a 30-metre embankment, killing Maria Casandra Karountzos, 30, of Creston, and former Creston resident Joshua Mitchell Hoffart, 30, of Lake Country. They had gone for a ride on a quad to the Oyama Lake Road lookout, about 15 kilometres south of Vernon, on July 18 at 9 p.m. a search began when they did not return.

Understanding our differences

A news story caught my attention shortly after I read an article on the Tyee (thetyee.ca), one of my favourite Internet news sources. A CBC Radio news report said that the federal government will not move to ban neonicotinoids, the insecticides which are being blamed for at least part of the growing death of bee populations around the world. A federal government spokesman said that Canada will continue with its own study until 2018 before it determines if any action is warranted. This decision comes despite a recent European ban on the nicotine-based substance, and studies that indicate the insecticides might also be killing birds, mammals and soil organisms. The Tyee article, by Geoff Dembicki, is titled How to Talk to a Conservative about Climate Change. He begins with the obvious, that climate change debate has become a left-wing issue, then goes on to reveal ways in which important issues become marginalized by the way they are perceived by people with different “moral foundations.” Research by New York University psychologist Jonathan Haidt breaks down human morality into distinct categories, he writes. “People who identify as politically liberal tend to have strong emotional reactions to questions of ‘care/harm’ (protecting vulnerable elements of society) and ‘fairness/cheating’ (making sure that justice is upheld).” And “conservative morality tends to emphasize questions of ‘loyalty/ betrayal’ (staying true to your cultural group), ‘authority/subversion’ (upholding long-held institutions) and ‘sanctity/degradation’ (fending off defilement).” Note that Dembicki is not talking about morality and immorality, but simply about different types of morality. This argument fits in with my puzzlement about why leaders

haven’t been able to rouse the public into action to take on issues that seem obvious to me, mostly environmental and economic.

This is the Life Lorne Eckersley And it reminded me of a quote from a former high-ranking U.S. elected official who said that when man cuts down the last tree on Earth, God will step in and resolve the problem. It sounds facetious to a non-believer, but a very large proportion of humans have a conservative morality that makes them loyal to the status quo and gives them a strong belief in institutions. To suggest that humans are responsible, or at least major contributors, to climate change, or even that there really is climate change, is an affront to their morality. Perhaps it is useless to attempt to convince conservatives about the need for economic and environmental police changes. After all, the very conservative approach of bailing out banks and saving themselves from their own stupidity seems to have worked, doesn’t it? So why risk imposing changes on how they operate? Same with the environment. Impending environmental disaster has been promised for more than a generation now — several if you go back to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. The oceans haven’t begun to boil, the surface temperature of the planet hasn’t soared, low-lying populated areas like Manhattan haven’t been covered by rising water levels. The arguments go on and on. Things that seem patently obvious to scientists (97

per cent of environmental scientists believe human activity is responsible for measurable, if not especially obvious, climate change) and liberals simply make no sense to conservatives. People do change their morality. I was once a conservative and I eventually concluded that it no longer suited me. As a liberal (not Liberal), I think we could be doing better in many, many ways, and I don’t trust a free and unfettered marketplace (“a long-held institution”) to make those changes. Perhaps I need to take solace in areas where small changes are being made, and people are proving that different approaches can work. I spent some time at Summerhill Pyramid Winery recently, talking at length with Ezra and Gabe Cipes, who are completely committed to farming in a way that does not sap the soil of nutrients or require the use of poisons to control pests and diseases. One can choose to look at them as a couple of kooks, but when Ezra said, “This is farming,” I was reminded of how not so many years ago the earth’s population was fed without the reliance of things that we know make us sick. If the population explosion has come as a result of our refusal to act in ways that benefit humans and their health instead of seeking endless ways to create wealth for a small proportion of the population, then we must also recognize that we are on an unsustainable path. I’m left to wonder, though, if liberals are pessimistic and believe we are doing irreparable harm to our environment, and conservatives believe that the status quo is fine and that it will all work out in the end, why can’t we tell the difference between these opposing moral views when we walk down the street. Shouldn’t one group look happier than the other? Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

IH saves by hiring halftime nurse To the Editor: Rejoice, taxpayers, and bow in gratitude to the Interior Health Authority and its master, the provincial government! IH, you see, has just saved the taxpayers a bit of money — a pittance in the overall scheme of things, no doubt, but we taxpayers don’t turn up our noses at anything that eases the pressure on our pocketbooks, do we? How was this small miracle achieved? Through a bit of luck, it seems. Here’s the story as reported by Sally Macdonald of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

In May, a nurse with 17 years’ experience and special pediatric training retired as co-ordinator of IH’s Nursing Support Services program for the East Kootenay — which, in this context, includes Creston. Her job was to work with health nurses, through consultation and the provision of information, regarding the assessment and care of about 30 special-needs children in the East Kootenay. It was a full-time position, and according to Patt Shuttleworth, chair of the East Kootenay region of the B.C. Nurses Union, full-time was barely enough to do the job properly. So what does IH do when this nurse retires? Replace her with another experienced, full-time one, you say? Not on your life. The position has been reduced to a half-time one — and filled by a recently graduated nurse. It evidently makes sense to IH. You see, in the West Kootenay the position

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 7

has been half-time for a long time. And according to Linda Basran, community integration health services director of Interior Health (east), “So when we took a look at being equitable ... it was important that we put both sides equally.” Now there’s logic for you. Shuttleworth and many others may rightly worry whether the East Kootenay’s special needs children are going to be adequately assessed in terms of their health-care and schooling needs. And, given the vulnerability of special needs kids, some of us may wonder why IH didn’t equalize the other way, by having full-time positions in both regions. But what’s really important to IH, it seems, is that east and west be treated “equally” — at the lowest common denominator, of course — and, incidentally, that B.C’s taxpayers save a few pennies. Community complex getting busier as third anniversary passes

We missed you at our third anniversary party the other week — just kidding; of course we would never have a celebration without inviting you. This one kind of slipped by as time usually does, but it’s hard to believe it has been three years since our grand opening in June of 2010. A lot of people have crossed the threshold since that time and while the numbers have somewhat stabilized, they continue to climb in the various areas (programs, fitness, aquatics) which is what we strive to encourage. We should probably start thinking about a five-year party as it will be upon us faster than you think. If you have any ideas, drop us a comment card; we are always open to reasonable suggestions. Notice I said reasonable — no Rolling Stones, Tom Jones or anything like that. Summer camps are booming. We finished our art camp, which had some pretty innovative stuff happening, and we just finished our first Sweaty Boys Summer Camp which is, well, you can probably guess, but the kids should sleep well at night once our instructors have finished running them through the paces. Add to that 30-plus degrees out-

side and yes, there will be sweat. We still have a bunch more camps happening so check out the leisure guide or online at www.rdck.bc.ca/creston. Last week we also had our Drowning Prevention Week activities in the pool,

around the community complex are a repair to our parking lot, where a narrow strip running north-south has been replaced. This repair was a small chunk of a large section of the original pavement, which predates me and which wasn’t budgeted to replace as part of the facility enhancement project. For those of you that remember, it was where the dividing strip of noposts sat between the lampposts. We have also added a bulletin board at the top of the field stairs by the bus stop for various programs and events down on either the baseball or soccer field. Finally, there are some new bike racks just to the right of the main entry for you to secure your Schwinn DX to (if you happen to be Peewee Herman). They are kind of funky looking black hoops with our logo cut into the metal so some people aren’t really sure what they are for, but rest assured, you can lock your bike to them. Hopefully, in some small way, it encourages a more active approach to the building. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

I’m not sure if you have heard but there is a spike in drowning deaths currently happening in B.C. — this is not a good thing. Currently, we are at 43 drowning deaths this year compared to 25 this time last year, so be careful out there! Other things you may have noticed

Vehicle payments impact debt ratios

The question of whether it’s better to lease or buy a vehicle is a common dilemma. And do you buy or lease a new or used vehicle? The answer depends on the specifics of your situation. It’s important to realize that many consumers overburden themselves with car leases or loans they simply can’t afford. While most of us require a vehicle to get to and from many destinations throughout the course of

Q

any given week, we don’t need a highend vehicle to serve this purpose.

The key to remember when you’re looking to purchase a home and obtain a mortgage or refinance an existing mortgage is that, if you overspend on a vehicle, it affects your debt ratios and may restrict or negate your mortgage financing ability. I see this a lot: People that come in to qualify for a mortgage, but can’t because of a large car or truck loan.

Consider debt ratios when deciding to lease or buy

From page 7 Leases and purchase loans are simply two different methods of automobile financing. One finances the use of a vehicle while the other finances the purchase of a vehicle. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks. When making a lease-or-buy decision, you must, therefore, look at your financial abilities in terms of your debt ratios. And if you’re unsure about how leasing or purchasing a vehicle will affect your ratios, it’s best to speak to a mortgage professional prior to making your decision. When you buy, you pay for the entire cost of a vehicle, regardless of how many kilometres you drive. You typically make a down payment, pay sales taxes in cash or roll them into your loan, and pay an interest rate determined by your loan company based on your credit history. Later, you may decide to sell or trade the vehicle for its depreciated resale value. When you lease, you pay for only a portion of a vehicle’s cost, which is the part that you “use up” during the time you’re driving it. You have the option of not making a down payment, you pay sales tax only on your monthly payments, and you pay a financial rate, called a money factor, which is similar to the interest on a loan. You may also be required to pay fees and a security deposit. At lease-end, you may either return the vehicle or purchase it for its depreciated resale value. As an example, if you lease a $20,000 car that will have, say, an estimated resale value of $13,000 after 24 months, you pay for the $7,000 difference (this is called depreciation), plus finance charges and possible fees. When you buy, you pay the entire $20,000, plus finance charges and possible fees. This is fundamentally why leasing offers significantly lower monthly payments than buying. Lease payments are made up of two parts — a depreciation charge and a finance charge. The depreciation part of each monthly payment compensates the leasing company for the portion of the vehicle’s value that is lost during your lease. The finance part is interest on the money the lease company has tied up in the car while you’re driving it. Loan payments also have two parts — a principal charge and a finance charge. The principal pays off the full vehicle purchase price, while the finance charge is loan interest. Since all vehicles depreciate in value by the same amount regardless of whether they’re leased or purchased, however, part of the principal charge of each loan payment can be considered as a depreciation charge. Just like with leasing, it’s money you never get back, even if you sell the vehicle in the future. The remainder of each loan principal payment goes toward equity — or resale value — which is what remains of your car’s original value at the end of the loan after depreciation has taken its toll. The longer you own and drive a vehicle, the less equity you have. With leasing, you may have the option of putting your monthly payment savings into more productive investments, such as your mortgage, an investment property or a vacation home, which will increase in value. In fact, many experts encourage this practice as one of the benefits of leasing. However, there are always other factors to consider. If the vehicle is being used for work, it would be wise to speak to your accountant to determine which is the best option from a tax standpoint. Duo offering lounge jazz Alice, Wonderland in concert at Sasquatch characters guests at museum tea

SUBMITTED

Moon Glow, featuring Shauna Clapp and Eric Moon, will take the stage at the Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 9. Clapp and Moon came together to play at an anniversary party and just kept on going. They do mostly lounge jazz with songs like Mood Indigo, Blackbird and Quiet Nights, and some contemporary songs like Sting’s Fields of Gold. Clapp began performing a few years ago, and hopes to have a vibrant career in song underway soon. She grew up with some of the music she now sings, as her grandmother was both a soloist and a lifelong musician. Her mother and daughter continue the tradition with piano. She has appeared locally at Starbelly Jam and Kaslo May Days, as well as numerous local eateries. Her influences include Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington and, of course, Ella Fitzgerald, and some of her favourite songs are Holly Cole’s I Can See Clearly , Etta James’ At Last and almost anything by Fitzgerald. Moon is a mild mannered teacher of computers and other technology but his first love is music. His mom sat him down in front of a piano at age five where he learned the basics. Then it was on to violin for six years, three years

of clarinet and sax in high school band, then a million years of guitar and voice. He also took a couple years of music in college. His musical influences are many and varied. Growing up in a very musical family, Moon had parents that listened to classical, big band and pop, and siblings that listened to opera, folk and rock. Early influences include Rush, Loverboy and Rick Springfield, and later, the Police, Sting and Dave Matthews Band. Guitar heros include Jimi Hendrix, Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe

Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Vernon Reid. Moon has played in musicals including Grease (guitar), The Wizard of Oz (bass) and Guys and Dolls (Casio DH-100 horn), and was musical director for a production of The Fiddler on the Roof. Some of Moon’s favourite songs are Skylark, Red Barchetta, Soul Cages and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Tickets are $10 in advance at Black Bear Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Kingfisher Used Books, and $13 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show starts at 8.

Characters from one of the most famous literary tea parties will be on hand at the Creston Museum on Aug. 10, when the museum hosts its 15th annual Old-Fashioned Tea, this time with an Alice in Wonderland theme. “Last year, we had our suffragette theme, and the challenge was out there,” said museum manager Tammy Hardwick. “As people were leaving, they asked how we were going to top it this year.” At the 2012 tea, members of Footlighters Theatre Society attended as real-life suffragette Dorothy Davis and her entourage, and led a rally for the cause. This year, members of the troupe will return, this time playing notable characters from the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, including the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Queen of Hearts and Alice herself. Anyone planning to attend should note that the actors don’t have to be the only ones in costume — guests are also welcome

to dress for the theme, although most usually need very little encouragement. “We’ve noticed that whenever we do a theme, people are really good at participating,” said Hardwick. This year, three guests — one from each of the 1, 2 and 3 p.m. seatings — with the maddest hat will win a prize, a uniquely styled teapot discovered by museum board member and Imperial Gift Shop co-ordinator Janet Holder. These same teapots inspired the theme for this year’s tea. “They are very cool, funky things,” said Hardwick. Matching perfume bottles will be on the tables as vases, but without the usual dainty, embroidered tablecloths that typically cover the tables — they didn’t fit this year’s theme. “They will not be making an appearance,” said Hardwick. Admission to the OldFashioned Tea is $8, which includes tea or lemonade, finger sandwiches and dainty goodies, and a museum tour. Reservations are strongly recommended by calling 250-428-9262.

Creston golfers sweep seniors open tourney BY PHIL THOMAS

Perfect golfing conditions were welcomed by 89 golfers at the 2013 Senior Open tournament held July 4 and 5 at the Creston Golf Club, in a season noteworthy for bizarre weather patterns. Ladies were divided into two flights, 69-and-under and 70-plus. The men had four divisions: 50-59,

60-64 years, 65-69 and 70-plus. All golfers compete for the major trophies, which, unusually for this year, were won by golfers in the younger divisions. Bryan Smithson (50-59) was awarded the low gross trophy with a score of 152. His first round of 75 was tied with one of his older rivals, John Gilmour. His 77 on the second day was good enough to edge out

Don Price, also from the 70-plus flight. Larry Walker, (60-64) won the net trophy for the first time with a score of 138, followed closely by Vern Ronmark with 141. Leslie Harbison, in the younger ladies’ division, won the low gross trophy with 173, five shots ahead of Virginia Harder. Marlys Joy, with a net score of 146, six shots ahead of Lila Murtack, won the net trophy. Participants agreed that the course has never been in better condition thanks to Devan Davidson and his crew. Regular visitors especially appreciated the new fine sand in the greenside bunkers. In the clubhouse, Dennis Munroe and his staff lived up to their usual high standards of catering and service. Senior open organizers and rules committee, Price and Harbison, ensured that the tournament went smoothly,

aided by hard-working volunteers Wally McDevitt, Joanne Prodaniuk, Lexi Loseth, Mary Sawyer and Angie Pawson. Finally, kudos also to the O’Keefe family and other pro shop staff for their professional transition into their new post. Local golfers and visiting participants from as far away as Stoneridge, Idaho, and Kelowna were suitably impressed by the whole event.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC regional head coach David Broadhurst will be in Nelson from Aug. 10-18 to lead the evaluations for the Whitecaps FC Kootenay Prospects Academy. Boys and girls ages U10 to U18 will have the opportunity to be evaluated for selection and invitation to the Kootenay Prospects program, which will include up to four boys and four girls training groups with 16-20 players per training group. “We really enjoyed our inaugural year in the Kootenays and learned more about how the program can have the greatest impact and benefit for local players,” said Whitecaps director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. “Based on that we have made some adjustments this year that will provide a regular Whitecaps FC presence

in the Kootenays, more regular contact with the players, and increased communication.” The program, including all sessions, will be run by Broadhurst and will include a 10-month program with three phases, running September through June, with weekly training sessions. There will also be one travel weekend per phase, which last year included an Major League Soccer weekend in Vancouver featuring an on-field training session and a Whitecaps MLS match. “The club’s desire is to have an overall regional program strategy that will allow the prospects academy to be accessible to the best players in the Kootenay region,” said Broadhurst. “In this coming 2013-14 cycle, we will operate a west program which will primarily be open to players from Nelson and Kootenay south.

The objective will be to work towards a similar east program for the fall of 2014-15. This will then provide the ability to connect the two programs for select training and events.” Whitecaps FC currently provides technical services to the Nelson Youth Soccer Association and hope to expand these services to other areas of the Kootenays. To be selected for the Whitecaps FC Prospects Academy, all players must register for the evaluation process. Evaluation sessions will be held at Lakeside Park in Nelson during the weekends of Aug. 10/11 and 17/18. Players interested in registration for the evaluation can visit whitecapsfc.com/academy and select Kootenay Academy or contact David Broadhurst at dbroadhurst@whitecapsfc.com or 250-550-5489.

KRACL seeking community input on Endicott Centre future KOOTENAY REGION ASSOCIATION FOR COMMUNITY LIVING

Since 1962, the Endicott Centre has capably served the Creston community of developmentally disabled persons. In 1965, through co-operative funding, a dormitory housing 30 children was constructed on the former Archibald estate. In 1970, an adult residence was constructed. Dr. William Endicott firmly believed in the worth of all persons. The 1980s saw the closure of institutions, with residents moving into the community with continuing support. The Erickson Road property is currently owned and managed by Kootenay Region Association for Community Living (KRACL), a non-profit charity, which is operated to benefit persons with disabilities throughout the Kootenays. One of the important existing components is the operation of

the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program on the property under an agreement that allows low riding fees. The directors of KRACL have undertaken a study of the potential uses for the property, and how those uses might benefit Kootenay adult persons with any disability by providing tolerant employment and accessible independent living housing on the site. Currently there are six employment segments being studied: •Farming — sheep and chicken raising; •Retreat/B&B/agri-tourism operation of Archibald House, with respite and training centre; •Orchard, vegetable/berry production and small scale food processing, as well as horticultural therapy programs; •Small engine repair and craft woodworking; •Retail farm gate store; and

Unreserved Public Auction

•Seed saving, sorting and sales. The project will provide approximately 14 part time jobs plus many seasonal jobs in a sustainable paid environment. The capital requirement will be about $1 million and while KRACL is investing considerable funds, help will be needed from private donors, foundations, government agencies, trusts and other funders. The property committee is sponsoring an open house from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 9 at Trinity United Church hall in Creston. Interested self advocates and caregivers of adults or soon-tobecome adults are invited to express their views on employment and housing needs to the committee in writing or in person. Tax deductible donations can be made at www.kracl.org if you want to help this project along, or contact Creston director Eric Kutzner at 250-4285061.

Help Wanted

It is with great sadness that the family of Ada Mary Smith announces her passing away on July 17, 2013 at the age of 83 years old. Ada was born to Hugh and Mary Smith on September 17, 1929 in Bellevue, Alberta. She grew up in a loving household with her older sister Ellen, her younger sister Anne and her two older brothers Edward and Joe. Ada moved to Creston with her family in 1946 when she was 16. She loved living on the 'Farm' in Erickson and spent many happy years in her simple yet satisfying routine. She was always with family including many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Ada loved children and never said "no" to reading a story or playing a game. She was devoted in her daily task of walking to the mail box and delivering mail. She also helped on the farm with picking up prunings, moving irrigation pipes and selling fruit. Ada enjoyed being around people and loved when visitors came to the farm. Ada was known, especially at family dinners, for her creamy rice pudding, her tapioca pudding and her Ă uffy angel food cake. Ada also appreciated spiritual things and had faith in the Bible's promise of a peaceful paradise on earth and of the resurrection when loved ones will reunite. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on April 20, 1957 and enjoyed being with her spiritual family at the Kingdom Hall every week. Ada was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Hugh Smith, her brothers Edward and Joseph and her two sisters Ellen and Anne. She will be missed by her brother-in-law John, sisterin-law Pat and nieces and nephews: George, David, Robert, Judy, Roger, Kathy, Doug, Joanne, Larry, Michael, Ted, Peggy and Pixie and their families. Anyone who knew Ada has known a very special person.

Regional magazine named best by Western Magazine Awards KOOTENAY MOUNTAIN CULTURE

Submitted

Kootenay Mountain Culture publisher Peter Moynes (left) and editorial manager Mitchell Scott.

After 12 years of publishing, a local group of magazine makers has landed an extraordinary honour — two in fact. Kootenay Mountain Culture (KMC) has been named magazine of the year for B.C./Yukon by the esteemed Western Magazine Awards (WMA), an organization that for the past three decades

has represented all of the magazine titles throughout B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Yukon. What’s more, KMC’s partner publication, Coast Mountain Culture (CMC), has been awarded the best new magazine. “We were really honoured,” says KMC/ CMC publisher Peter Moynes, who attended the 31st annual WMAs with editorial director Mitchell Scott and CMC editor Mike Berard last month. “The first thing we thought of was all the support we’ve had from so many folks throughout the Kootenays, some for quite a while now — our families, all our readers, contributors and all the businesses who’ve put their trust in us.” “The crowd at the awards let out a huge cheer and applause when we won magazine of the year,” says Scott. “We’ve been the little guys that the big guys have been watching. We’ve had all kinds of kudos from all sorts of major league print and web media titles before — everyone from the National Post to National Geographic. But to have been chosen by all our peers for this, well, it’s really something extraordinary.” KMC was up against a number of iconic Western Canadian publications including BC Business, Vancouver Magazine, Western Living and Geist. While the honours took the KMC cohorts by surprise, the awards are more than well earned according to well wishers at the WMAs and Canadian magazine veterans alike. “When I first saw a copy of KMC, I couldn't believe how polished a product it was, nor that it had emerged from a small town in B.C., of all places,” says Calgary-based writer Kevin Brooker. A journalist for the past 30 years, Brooker is a multiple WMA winner who contributes to publications including the Globe and Mail, Outside, Powder, ESPN and Applied Arts. “Most of all, however, I was heartened to see that at a time when budget constraints and changing times are forcing a lot of magazines to lower print standards, replace custom photography with stock and reduce their editorial staff, KMC and CMC were forging a really sophisticated visual and literary voice,” says Brooker. “The products go light years beyond anything that one normally encounters in the mountain/ outdoors genre, or most any other genre for that matter.” What onlookers say is most extraordinary about the KMC/CMC product, is the fact both magazines are free, relying entirely on advertising and distribution support. Launched in 2001 as a tiny 28-page handout, and today still run from above Moynes’ backyard garage, Kootenay Mountain Culture has been supported by small businesses, resorts and destination marketing organizations from throughout the west and east Kootenay and Columbia regions. Moynes credits the magazine’s well-targeted distribution for the success, noting that the publications are essentially calling cards for the places and people the magazines’ writers and photographers tell stories about. “We live in one of the greatest places in the world,” he says. “We’re blessed. And to be able to work with so many people in the communities all around us, and help build their businesses, we consider ourselves very fortunate. Our sincere thanks go out to everyone.”

COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES

College of the Rockies adventure tourism business operations graduate Greg Snell has the best job in the world — or at least one of them. Snell, an Oshawa, Ont., native, was announced as the winner of the Best Jobs in the World – wildlife caretaker by Tourism Australia in June. Wildlife caretaker was one of six positions up for grabs in addition to chief funster, outback adventurer, park ranger, lifestyle photographer and taste master. With over 330,000 applicants from 196 countries, Snell was the only Canadian to make it to the finals. After being named a finalist and flying to Australia, Snell competed in a week of adventure, nature-based, culinary, social media and photography challenges against two other finalists in the wildlife caretaker category before being named the winner. As wildlife caretaker, Snell will live on Kangaroo Island in South Australia for six months and spend his time swimming with great white sharks, snorkeling with sea lions, hanging out with kangaroos and helping to conserve the

pristine natural environment of the island. He will document his experience through videos and blogs. “I am incredibly elated to have won the position of wildlife caretaker,” Snell says. “I can’t wait to take my passion and enthusiasm for life, travel and conservation to beautiful South Australia. There is so much there to offer the adventurous traveller and I am looking forward to sharing all of my amazing experiences with the world.” Since completing the adventure tourism business operations program at the college’s Golden campus in 2009, Snell completed a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded internship in Ecuador, focusing on sus-

tainable development through tourism. He then moved on to work for a Canadian adventure tourism company as tour leader in the Southern Cone of South America, leading small group adventure travel trips through Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Patagonia. Snell will begin his role of wildlife caretaker in early December. In the meantime, he planned to remain in Australia for a couple of weeks, getting to know the area better, before travelling back to Brazil and then spending some time with friends and family in Canada before starting the six-month position. Sleeping IHA move bad for paddlers special rescued in needs kids, West Arm says BCNU Nelson Star

Nelson Police Department's marine unit assisted a couple paddlers asleep in their drifting canoe on Sunday morning. Police received a call to report the seemingly-empty canoe floating just past the Big Orange Bridge. However, one of the dispatch officers in the department had recalled seeing two people sleeping in a canoe by the boat launch on his way to work moments earlier. Officers with the Marine 1 unit went out on the lake to check the canoe and found the people still sleeping inside, unaware they were being carried down the lake by the current. Police used their boat to tow the canoe back to the Rotary dock at Lakeside Park.

BY SALLY MacDONALD Cranbrook Daily Townsman East Kootenay children with special needs may not be getting the attention they need after cuts to a nursing program based in Cranbrook. According to Patt Shuttleworth, chair of the BC Nurses Union (East Kootenay region), a full-time nurse retired in May as the lone co-ordinator of the Nursing Support Services program for the region, overseen by the Interior Health Authority. She was replaced by a part-time nurse working half of those hours. “The senior experienced nurse with 17 years of on-the-job and specialty pediatric training retired from the position and the position was then reduced to a 0.5 position which was accepted by a new grad,” explained Shuttleworth. The Nursing Support Services program covers about 30 children throughout the East Kootenay, from Golden to Cranbrook and Creston to Sparwood.

Thursday, August 1, 2013 Creston Valley Advance

“We really are concerned that those children will not get their assessments in time for school in the fall, and their caregivers won't get timely education for treatments and thus timely interventions will not happen,” said Shuttleworth. According to Interior Health, children from birth to age 18 with special needs can access the program for nursing care. Nurses provide information and consultation about health issues relating to the special need, create a plan for community care, train alternate caregivers, and can provide an athome assessment of medical and respite benefits. “The nurse must assess the children's needs, develop care plans and assist families and care providers to learn how to implement the required care. Following this the school teachers need to be assisted with the same learning,” explained Shuttleworth. “Where the children are infants, assistance with special needs breastfeeding is often required and due to the cut of the only lactation consultant in the East Kootenay there is no longer a resource for this much-needed and very important skill.” Now, the part-time nurse works alone, with her manager based in Kelowna. “The management person is supposed to be part of the team that does the work, but she’s based out of Kelowna, so it’s highly unlikely that she’s going to be on the ground here,” said Shuttleworth. The workload was almost too much for the full-time nurse, who needed every minute of her hours to provide care for the children, Shuttleworth said. She doesn’t know how the part-time nurse will manage.

“There is just too much work for the nursing time allotted and nurses are concerned that these children will not be receiving the care they need,” she said. But Linda Basran, director of community integration health services for Interior Health (east), said that the nurse in the Nursing Support Services program is not a hands-on caregiver but a co-ordinator. “There are people who are delivering the care; this is a co-ordinating role,” said Basran. “She would co-ordinate what the direct caregivers are doing. She would teach or delegate care to the caregivers, and that would be individual to each client.” The program is a contract with Interior Health by the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Basran said that for a long time, the program in the West Kootenay was coordinated by a part-time nurse, while the East Kootenay had a full-time registered nurse. “So when we took a look at being equitable, and we knew we had a natural attrition, it was important that we put both sides equally,” said Basran. “The timing was around the retirement of the incumbent; we did not lay anyone off. “But when any job becomes available, we always look at what makes the most sense for the future.” Basran said that since the part-time nurse is handling the workload in the West Kootenay, she is confident that the same will be true in the east. “But we will continue to monitor the situation,” Basran said, adding that Interior Health will take remedial measures if the situation is not working.
