New tech takes business tours to a new level SAM VAN SCHIE West Kootenay Advertiser
A year ago, Google Street View came through the Kootenays on a mission to put our area on the digital map. Now there’s another photographer who has arrived in town to bring local businesses even further into the digital age. Jody Wall is a Google-trusted photographer who uses Street View technology for the purpose of creating virtual tours inside businesses, serving proprietors and shoppers alike. He arrived this month with plans to photograph at least 100 businesses from Rossland to Revelstoke. The West Kootenay Advertiser caught up with Wall in Nelson, where he was set to shoot a handful of hotels and guest houses, as well as a couple of downtown retail stores. “I’m going to set a new record [among Google-trusted photographers] for the most businesses photographed in one month,” Wall says, noting

he’s still accepting appointments. The Lower Mainland resident jumped at the chance to spend a month in the Kootenays. Some of the first tours Wall created in Rossland are already online. Do a Google search for “Ferraro Foods,” and get to the tour by clicking on “see inside” in the Google Places menu that comes up alongside the search results. Clicking through the tour inside the business is similar to looking through a neighbourhood on a Google’s Street View

It takes the entrepreneur about an hour to photograph a business, which he does during the shop’s regular hours of operation. Customers and employees in the photos will have their faces blurred for privacy. For more details on this service, go online to insideview4business.com.

Twice-burned, Fruitvale mom warns of ticket scam more trust in people, as in Fruitvale everyone is like a neighbour. She has learned her lesson and won’t be so trusting next time around and wants to
Valerie Rossi West Kootenay Advertiser
A mother’d bid to surprise her daughter with concert tickets cost her $650 and a scam story to share. Karen Halifax is warning residents to think twice before buying anything online after she twice fell victim to a ticket scam. Halifax had planned on rewarding her 13-year-old daughter Joanna with birthday tickets to her favourite boy band, One Direction, which played in Vancouver at Rogers Arena late last month. The treat was initially decided after Joanna helped with her ill grandfather. “My dad passed away in my arms and Joanna was there and witnessed his passing, too,” she said. “The thought of tickets for the concert went on the back burner until Joanna’s birthday in June.” Because of Joanna’s great behaviour and help with her granddad, Halifax started searching for tickets to the “Take Me Home” tour and she turned to Kijiji, a free classified website, to score some to the sold-out show. She found four ninth-row tickets for $150 each, sent out an email and one blurry photo later, it was a done deal. “The picture wasn’t clear but the seller

the matter and anyone else who thinks they’ve been victimized by a similar scam involving One Direction tickets is asked to call the Vancouver Police.

said their phone didn’t take very good pictures,” said Halifax. “I explained to them that I didn’t feel comfortable sending $500 – the price we agreed on – without having the tickets in hand so the seller said she would take half now and half when I got the tickets.” She then transferred the money on June 28, with the intentions of receiving the tickets by July 2. Shortly after that she felt sick to her stomach when she read an ad on Kijiji about a ticket scam that noted a circulating email that was exactly the same as the seller sent her. But her efforts didn’t stop there. Determined to get her daughter tickets, Halifax went back online, a little bit wiser this time. On July 3, she found an ad on Craig-

slist for two floor tickets in Row 6 for $500. She received an “authentic” photo and then offered the seller $400. Negotiations were made for Halifax’s cousin to meet the seller in person at Metrotown in Burnaby. “Joanna kept asking me if her present came yet so when I received the tickets and looked at them, I was excited,” said Halifax. “I couldn’t wait to see Joanna’s face when she opened up the envelope; but instead of just giving her the tickets, I thought I would do a treasure hunt type thing with the prize being a basket with some One Direction items and the tickets.” To her dismay, on July 12 she read an article in the Province that included a picture of fake tickets being sold. “My heart sank as I looked at the tickets,”
she recalled. “They were my tickets!” After shedding some tears, Halifax contacted the mother who was also duped and they shared stories, realizing they both had been played by the same girl. Through tears she told Joanna what happened and that she could no longer afford to buy her tickets after two scam artists took advantage of her pocket book. “She came to me and gave me a big hug and said to me, ‘It’s okay mom, don’t cry. I’d love to see One Direction and I’m disappointed the tickets aren’t real but just knowing that you wanted to do something so special for me is good enough.’” A defeated Halifax is not the only one replaying her naive choices. She wonders if living in a small town in the Kootenays makes her put

Save the date for the 2013 Columbia Basin Symposium
Basin residents are invited to connect with each other at the 2013 Columbia Basin Symposium, to be held October 18 to 20 in Creston. This event will focus on “Community Change Through Collaborative Action” and is hosted by Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “Many of the complex issues facing our communities require collaboration across a broad range of organizations and agencies,” said Greg Deck, CBT Board Chair. “The Symposium is an opportunity for Basin residents to network, learn ways to enhance collaborative efforts and mobilize the forces that will create a
difference in our region.” The keynote speaker will be Paul Born, President and Co-founder of Tamarack: An Institute for Community Engagement, which helps people collaborate, and achieve collective impact on complex community issues. He is the author of the bestselling Community Conversations: Mobilizing the Ideas, Skills and Passion of Community Organizations, Governments, Business and People. Along with other presenters, the event will also feature Ray Bollman of the Rural Development Institute of Brandon University. Ray is the former Chief of the Rural Research Group of Statistics Canada and a focus of his research interests is the socio-economic aspects of rural populations.
The Symposium will also be an opportunity to learn more about the work CBT is doing in the region and to provide input into its current planning initiatives. In addition, an evening of cultural entertainment featuring local and Basin talent will be open to the public on Saturday evening. Watch CBT’s website for details to come. Symposium registration will open in early September and space is limited. The Symposium is free of charge. For more information visit www.cbt. org/2013symposium. CBT supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. Through the Walls of Time Grey Cup’s namesake named Boswell greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Twenty-second in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Boswell, located on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, is reputedly named for land surveyor Elias John Boswell (1870-1956). Governor-General Earl Grey — the man who donated the Grey Cup, emblematiic of Canadian Football League supremacy — visited Kootenay Lake in the fall of 1906 and bought prime orchard land there for his son, Lord Howick. Boswell was hired to survey the ranch and it was named in his honour, according to former provincial geologist Dr. Stuart S. Holland, a distant relative. In a 1942 history of Boswell, D.V. West said Earl Grey joked that buying the property from prominent fruit rancher James Johnstone and naming it Boswell suggested James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson. (Guess you had to be there.) The Boswell post office opened on March 1, 1907. The BC geographical names database indicates this place was known as McGregor as of 1900, after original pre-emptor D.C. McGregor of Trail. A creek is also named for him. According to Early Land Surveyors of British Columbia, Boswell was born in Cannington, Ontario and made his way west after graduating from the University of Toronto in 1895. By 1901, he was in Nelson and obtained his BC provincial land surveyor commission. His other noteworthy surveys included three miles of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline through the Monashees and many CPR town-

sites. In 1915, he moved to Toronto where he eventually became chief engineer of surveys for Ontario Hydro. Boswell Lake in the Cariboo may also be named after him. Bosworth This flag station on the CPR’s Lardeau and Gerrard branch four miles from Howser, was on the timetable by September 1907. Roger Burrows in Railway Mileposts Vol. II says it was named for CPR vice-president George Morris Bosworth (1858-1925). Mount Bosworth, in Yoho National Park, is also named after him. Boulder Mill This spot 2.5 miles north of Salmo was home to a logging camp, sawmill, and post office that opened April 1, 1920 and closed November 10, 1922. It took its name from Boulder Creek, which appeared on George M. Dawson’s 1890 “Reconnaisance Map of a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic]

Presumably named after the width of Lower Arrow Lake at this point, opposite Renata. A post office opened on December 1, 1912 and closed August 31, 1954. According to The Story of Renata 1887-1965 by Mary Warkentin and Rose Ann Rohn, “It was first called Little Deer Park, then Lakeside, and finally Broadwater. The Indians who used to winter there called it Immitoin, meaning sheltered place.” It’s unclear where the authors found the latter, although a Google Books search returns what appears to be a home by that name in Renata in 1912, occupied by George and Ruth Illingworth. Although it no longer exists as a community, Broadwater is remembered in the name of the road that stretches from Brilliant to beyond Deer Park.

A look at Rossland’s complicated fiscal scenario pality is not allowed to pass a deficit budget according to the Community Charter, but it is allowed to come in at a deficit at the end of the year. However, under the charter, the city now has some work to do. “You have to clearly address that in your next plan as to how you are going to deal with that deficit,” she said. As a result, there will be a $4 million borrowing undertaken this year by the city to offset the existing deficit—and the current alternative approval process is underway to gain the community’s blessing, and to set the terms of the borrowing. Currently, cash for the city coffers compared to last year at this time is down nearly $6 million. And, although the city has reserve fund balances of $4.3 million, it is actually in a deficit of $3.7 million because it has used the money to fund
TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser
The multi-million dollar renovation of Rossland’s downtown has left the municipal government cash poor but asset rich and has sunk the city into debt. According to the latest financial audit by Berg, Naqvi, Lehman chartered accountants of Nelson, the City of Rossland has dipped into a financial debt position after it spent over $4 million worth of its cash reserves to fund the $5.8 million it owed for the Columbia Avenue/Washington Street project. The deficit was not due to mismanaged city operations, but the timing of the funding for the project eroded the city’s cash position, meaning it had to draw down its reserves to pay for the project when the bills came due, said Rossland chief financial officer Cecile Arnott. A munici-
the project without having the borrowing in place.
“You have to clearly address that in your next plan, as to how you’re going to deal with that deficit.” Cecile Arnott Rossland CFO Grants and accounts receivable rose from $440,150 to $2.9 million, after the city received cash from the provincial Ministry of Transportation for the Columbia/ Washington project, as well as the money the city receives back from the HST (around $600,000). Liabilities remained similar at $6.7 million down slightly from $6.9 million. Those figures gave the city a net financial debt of $2.85 million, as opposed to a net financial asset of
$259,981. “We are really in a financial debt position,” Arnott said. While the city sits in an accumulated surplus of over $40 million, nearly all of that is tied up in tangible capital assets—assets that have a physical form. Tangible assets include both fixed assets, such as machinery, city buildings and land, and current assets, such as inventory. The city has reserve funds of $4.258 million but it is in an operating and capital fund deficit of $3.7 million. This is where the anomaly exists. The city says it has reserve funds of over $4 million, yet it does not have the cash to cover the reserves. “And when we put the $4 million back that we will borrow we will have that cash back,” said Arnott. That is why the city went from a cash basis of $6.38 million down to $468,000.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS
PETS on PARADE Moving is hard on all animals... One of the main reasons that animals are surrendered to BCSPCAs around the province is because people have to move and are not allowed to keep their animals with them in their new place of residence. This is very hard emotionally on the owners involved but it is devastating to the animals. Moving is hard on all animals, but to then have to lose your human family and learn to live in a shelter is especially trying. New sights, sounds and people are hard on the animal in question and the shelter staff does everything in our power to lessen the blow that the animal is going through, but there is only so much that can be done. Imagine losing your family and home all in one day, then just when you think it can’t get any worse, you are forced to live in an unfamiliar environment with new people. That is what hundreds of companion animals go through every year. We believe that if landlords new the benefits of pet friendly housing, they would be more prone to offer it. Increased rental income would probably be the greatest benefit that a landlord would first see. People who have pets would be willing to pay 20-30% more to be able to keep their pets. People with pets also stay longer -- an average of 46 months, compared to 18 months for people without pets -- saving landlords from having to spend time advertising for, finding and screening new reliable tenants. Other direct benefits are increased security for not only the inside of your apartment or home, but also the outside for the full complex or area you live in. Having a few loyal dogs in the building will ensure that bad people will be more likely to stay away. The BCSPCA recognizes both the need for pet friendly housing, and for responsible tenants who do not abuse the privilege of having pets in their homes. Please go to www. spca.bc.ca to read the information that was created to help tenants prepare to find a new home, discuss options with current or new landlords and to better understand the issue at hand.

Community Former professor raising TC Trail awareness in honour of wife Craig Lindsay West Kootenay Advertiser
Ed. note: The WKA is pleased to welcome Craig Lindsay back to the Kootenay-Boundary Country after his stint of several months away. Edmund Aunger was overcome with grief after his wife was struck and killed by a car while cycling in in Prince Edward Island last year. Aunger, a former university professor from Edmonton, and wife Elizabeth Sovis had been cycling the Trans Canada Trail but had been forced to pull off and ride on a narrow highway with no paved shoulders in order to find lodging during their trip. Sovis was hit and killed by a drunk driver. In order to help deal with his grief, and to honour his wife, Aunger decided to undertake a cross-Canada cycling trip to raise funds for the Trans Canada Trail and to raise awareness of cycling safety. “When our children got older and moved out of the house, my wife and I took up cycling,” said Aunger. “I’d been cy-
cling since I was nine years old. My wife didn’t start until she was in her 50s. I had the idea that it would be fun to take our holidays on our bikes and cycle different parts of Canada.” Aunger has always been a big proponent of the Trans Canada Trail, which is an 18,000-km greenway and 5,000-km waterway meant to link Canadians from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans. “Since my wife wasn’t very confident on her bike, she wouldn’t ride on the highways or roads with the cars,” he said. “So I organized the trips so we would stay on the Trans Canada Trail. We ran into problems right away.” The trail project began in 1992 and is meant to be completed by 2017 for Canada’s 150th anniversary. But with each province and territory responsible for their own section, certain areas have either not been completed or are in complete disrepair, said Aunger. “My wife resolved to work on getting the Trans Canada Trail finished so ordinary people would have a safe place to walk and ride their bikes,” he
Edmund Aunger stops at the Trans Canada Trail sign at City Park in Grand Forks on July 23. Craig Lindsay
said. Aunger quit his job and began his journey in Victoria in July of this year. On July 23, Aunger passed through the Kootenay/Boundary, stopping in Grand Forks at the Trans Canada Trail sign. “(The trail) can’t get done in the remaining four years unless the people stand up and say, ‘This is important to us’,” he said.
“I believe most Canadians don’t want to ride their bikes on the highways. They want a safe place for them and their children to go, and unfortunately, most Canadians like that aren’t aware of where the Trans Canada Trail is, and how hard it is to get from one part of it to another.” For more information visit www.ridethetrail.ca.
Grand Forks player skates with the “Wayne’r” Grand Forks Brief A local hockey player had the rare and coveted opportunity to practice with hockey legend Wayne Gretzky at a recent camp in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Chase McKay had heard rumours that Gretzky would be at a power skating camp (through the Compete Hockey development program) but was still excited to see The Great One in the flesh.
“One of my friends went to the camp the week before and he had told me that Gretzky went and was maybe coming back because his kid (Tristan) was there,” McKay told the West Kootenay Advertiser. “I wasn’t 100 per cent sure but there was a good chance,” he explained. “I was really hoping he would be there, especially after finding out he was there the week before.”

Leap of Faith A small group gathered outside St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Castlegar the morning of Friday, July 26 before boarding a bus to the “One Rock 2013” celebrations in Cochrane, Alta. This is a festival designed to coincide with Pope Frances’ visit to the World Youth Day events taking place this weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event has been described as “a vibrant faith-filled Christian festival for young adults and their families.” “It’s a time where we come together, away from the noise of the world, to make a noise for God,” said Father David John in a media release. Sixteen participants, from Castlegar, Trail and Grand Forks, joined others from Nelson and Cranbrook enroute to the festival. Submitted
The hills are alive with the sound of whirring gears. Launching the first week in August is a new mountain bike photo contest, open to all who have camera and will travel to the trails around Rossland on their two-wheel steeds. It is a great way to promote what has become a growing sport and form of tourism in the region, said Rossland News’ Monika Smutny, but also to share what people around here do and see in the summer. “It’s what we do in the community,” she said. “We thought it would be a great idea because there are so
many avid bikers who also have an interest in photography.”

The contest runs until the end of September and prizes will be handed out to the top three vote getters. People can submit photos and vote online at www.rosslandnews.com (at the top of the page). You must be 13 years of age or older at time of entry to be eligible.

Garden gets drip system Grand Forks On July 23, several budding gardeners at Hanneke’s Place – Kettle River Community Garden learned about the new drip irrigation system the garden is now using. There were several volunteers on hand to show people how to use the new system, including Mike Jones from Y&R Water, who installed the system, and Graham Watt, director of community service for the Grand Forks Rotary Club and volunteer with the community garden. “We switched them from an overhead system to the drip system,” said Jones. “They were having trouble with people growing garlic who didn’t want to water. With the overhead water, it waters everything including the weeds in between the (garden) beds. This way it conserves water and people have control over how much water goes into their own bed.”

Sculpture Talk
2012
Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. dio Arts at Selkirk College in Nelson. His years of practice as a metal engraver, a sub-contractor for Kootenay Forge and now as owner/operator of his own forge give him a unique perspective on metal forgery to pass on to his students.
is beauty all around us, and it’s found in everything. Often an object many would not even stop to consider lends itself to re-creation and realization in metal.”
The nearly three and a half foot high ‘Fir One (1)’ is angled to best show off the detailed, overlapping parts that make up the whole. Tapering as expected to a nearly enclosed top, the scales of the cone are interspersed with mature pointed bracts throughout in an irregular but pleasing to the eye manner. As in Patient Hunter, the viewer marvels at the complexity and intricacy of the work while appreciating the overall beauty of it.
Kevin Kratz ‘Fir One (1)’ (steel) Along with Ridgeline Metal Works partner James Karthein, Kevin Kratz was the recipient of last year’s prestigious Peoples Choice award. The resulting purchase by the City of Castlegar of their iconic study of a blue heron titled Patient Hunter for $15,000 was proof of the talent the two demonstrate collectively. This year, Kratz is going it alone with another spectacular metal sculpture divined from the nature that surrounds him. “I got the inspiration for the piece while out for a morning walk,” he says. “The symmetry of the cone, the relative perfection of it, made me want to recreate it on a larger scale. There
“[It] has been a crucial building block of civilizations but regrettably this art form has often given way to modern machinery and mass production. I try to emphasize to my students that passion, patience and old-style hand work are keys to the art and practice of good forge work. “Every piece - whether for practical purposes or as a sculpture - should reflect yourself as a craftsperson and an artisan. I’m part of everything I make, whether it’s a coat hook or a sculpture like the work I’m currently displaying.”
Kratz (along with Karthein) has an affinity for trees and their components, often working leaf motifs into some of their elaborate fence works, fireplace covers and decorative art pieces. Sculptures the two have produced include end of season apple trees, maple leaves, grapevines and now, of course, Kratz’ fir cone. “Both of us live and work in a magnificent nature-filled valley,” says Kratz. “Our singular skills meld together very cohesively work-wise, but we’re also attuned regarding the importance of respecting the nature we’re lucky enough to be surrounded by.” To this end, both Ridgeline Metal Works and Goose Creek Forge make an effort to buy, and employ, locally whenever possible.

Lee Badger ‘Waldgeist’ (weathered steel and rock)
Badger’s stylized interpretation of the mythical forest denizen is delivered in weather steel and mounted on an irregular rock base. A mask-like face is discernable at the top of the piece created by the swirling leaves, with other leaves and branches flailing about as they are tossed in the wind and transform collectively into the guardian of the forest. It is a haunting, wonderfully balanced piece that allows the imagination to be fully engaged while viewing it.
In German, waldgeist translates loosely to ‘woodland spirit’. Now settled in the West Virginian panhandle, Lee Badger’s abstract portrait of this mythological creature seems appropriate given the location of his workshop and studio – the hollows and forests of the Appalachians are renowned for their general spookiness. Mists and fogs are common and its rural isolation is especially daunting at night; spectral and supernatural happenings abound in legend.
“I’m inspired when I can take my imagination into tangible reality,” says Badger. “[When sculpting] I choose to do this in metal because of its strength and durability. At the same time though, the formal and serious side of art can come on too strong, so I like playful work that has fun and jiggles sensibilities in an amusing way. I think with ‘Waldgeist’ there is a nice balance – it is playful and exuberant but at the same time there is the deeper, legendary aspect too.”
A waldgeist is a mythological phantom of the woods, a protector of nature and those who respect and champion it. For those intent on destruction or

from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Its just over a hundred and a half or so to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia or Richmond, Virginia. Even New York City is an easy 4-5 hour drive.” Besides creating beautiful, inspired metal sculptures, Badger and his business partner and assistant blacksmith Steve Dykstra produce sublime furniture, garden pieces, gates, light fixtures and much more. All are uniquely made with infinite craftsmanship and comfort is particularly important for the furniture pieces. “In its functional purpose, in it’s craftsmanship, in its time and space, and to behold,” says Badger. “I think a piece of furniture only becomes a work of art when the design and the craftsmanship inspire each other and meld into a single accomplishment.” To clientele, his furniture is art. His impressive imaginative talents are evident in the work displayed here as well.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week August 2, 2013
Tip of the Week: With the rare and powerful Grand Trine in Water (July 17) and Mars Opposition Pluto (July 27) and the Star of David (July 29) and Mars Square Uranus (July 31) now behind us, but all still reverberating powerfully, and the New Moon in Leo (August 6) and Jupiter opposition Pluto (August 7) this is a major time of change for us all! Right in the midst of all this on July 22 less than an hour before the exact Full Moon and the Sun entering Leo, Prince George was born. A close examination of his Birth Chart certainly reveals all the grandeur and complexity that might be imagined of the new prince. There are certainly some pluses there in baby Georges chart, and it has its full fair share of challenges as well. I will bring closer attention to it in my upcoming newsletter which you can subscribe to on my website and is posted on my Facebook Fan Page (Sunstar Astrology). But the really big news is the steadily emerging global village and the changing economy. This morphing process is moving faster with each new day and we are all challenged to keep up. This requires that we are more aware and in-tune with both the outer flow and our own true destiny line. This is where Astrology can help you significantly. We are living in a new paradigm now. It can be described as the quantum age. Our times require a more spiritually conscious, accepting, open, flexible and dynamic mode of whole brain thinking than ever before. Our individual and collective challenge now is to tune-in and flow with the dynamic and dramatic flow of changes happening in every sector of modern civilization. Thanks to many years of experience assisting people using Astrology and Numerology, I can help you to tune in to your authentic nature and identify and align with your destiny line.

The New Moon in Leo on August 6 will activate a more playful, creative and perhaps romantic mood than you have felt for a while. This will contribute to boost your confidence to beautify your home and/or create more harmony with your family. There does remain a more sobering element all the while linked to deeper changes brewing within. The pace of things is steadily speeding up for you. Demands of your time, energy and focus are coming from many fronts. Fortunately, your energy levels are running high. You feel moved to get to the bottom of things somehow. At best, this pace is activating your creative dynamism. Commitment to a brighter future is the rock in your roll. Your sights are set on creating a more secure foundation. Health is the key word here. It can be applied in a variety of directions: attitude, body, diet, mental and emotional balance, lifestyle habits…. This theme will continue for a couple of years but this is an important time to take a fresh start. You will have to be clear, disciplined and willing to do the work to succeed. A big, bold, brassy and exciting cycle has begun for you over the past several weeks. You should feel it as a boost of confidence. It will inspire you to take some risks and makes some moves that you would not have previously. Now that the start shot has been sounded, focus to establish a steady momentum and a determined stride. This week’s New Moon in your sign will spark some key initiatives. You may feel the need to dig deeper than usual to access deeper reserves of faith to follow through. You are deeply in a cycle that requires that you ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. This includes opening up and perhaps exposing some of your vulnerabilities. This could prove extra apparent over the coming weeks. All being well you have expanded your scope and stimulated your network. Now it is time to follow through on the leads you have activated and otherwise work behind the scenes, lay low and/or retreat for a little while. You can still be productive and may in fact be even more so than usual. Be willing to multi-task as necessary.

Some key initiatives and events in your public and/or professional life have been keeping you busy. These have brought you more exposure. Yet, have also likely required extra efforts. Making key investments has and will continue to be an important theme. Now it is time to play. Accept invitations or make your own. Circumstances and key players have been pushing you to see a bigger picture. Now it is time to more fully engage your imagination to create new opportunities. Approaching authority figures for favours and earned rewards over the coming weeks should prove favourable. Assuming a more philosophical and perhaps spiritual perspective will linger longer yet. A time of clearing, purging and purifying is entering a new stage. It has caused you to go deep and has likely stirred your emotions in a big way. At best, it has inspired your passions and even synchronized with a new flow of abundance. Now, the Leo cycle is activating a more playful and adventurous mood. Catch the spirit of fun and games. Many new and big beginnings on relationship fronts are occurring these days. Some of these are causing you to let go of things, attitudes, approaches and/or perspectives you once valued. Their time is up and it is important for you to move on to your next set of experiences. The good news is that the cycle that has just begun will open your whole world wide. The seeds of new lifestyle rhythms have been sown. To achieve this you have had to take some very calculated risks which were not so easy to do. For the sake of increased abundance, prosperity and overall fulfillment though, you did it. Now it is time to stimulate new relationships. Put on your diplomats cap and start shaking hands. A creative cycle continues and is keeping you busy on a variety of fronts. Now it is time to improve, refine and complete what you started a couple of months ago. This process may take a few weeks, especially considering the spectrum of fronts, but now is the time to do it. Consequently, this is probably not the time to start anything new, until month’s end anyway.

Ongoing issue in Salmo concerns a persistent reek from trash Continued from P. A15
“While it is good to see so many citizens interested in the business of council,” she said. “There has to be a de-
gree of decorum, and public time after the meeting is a courtesy.” Henderson reminded the residents in attendance that interruptions would not be tolerated,
and only current agenda items, which didn’t include the garbage contract, would be addressed during public discussion. During the tense
hour-long council meeting, the elephant in the room, the dissolution of the Salmo Garbage Services contract, was opened up for discussion after Coun. Jennifer Peel
went on record during her report to address the matter. “The contract was tendered out because it came to an end,” she said. “Moving forward the
contract that was awarded was, in my opinion, in the best interest of the community,” adding, “it will save our community copious amounts of money.”
