Hugh Rose, Captain Derek Masaro, Jason Fahl and Scott Alleyn are part of the Burnaby Fire Department’s crew at No. 7 Hall that is deployed to fight bush and brush fires. Some of their specialized equipment includes a wildland pack that carries up to 50 foot lengths of 5/8” hose plus couplers and nozzles, and a wildland pumper truck that can douse a fire with special suffocating foam.
Dry weather has fire crews on alert Mario Bartel

Darrell Smith loves the sunny dry weather. But when he’s on duty as the assistant chief for the Burnaby fire department, he casts one eye on the forecast and knocks on wood with his knuckle. “All things considered, it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it was going to be,” said Smith. As of Wednesday, it hadn’t rained at Vancouver International Airport in 34 days. And while that’s well
short of the record dry spell of 58 days set in the summer of 1951, the more than 390 hours of sunshine through late June and all of July have left Burnaby’s grasses, parks and forests tinder dry. It’s ideal conditions for a carelessly discarded cigarette butt, perfectly placed shard of glass or random lightning bolt to spark a brush or wildfire. Even the hot muffler beneath a car parked in tall, dry grass can be a firestarter, said Smith. Luckily, his department has only had to deal with the odd spot

fire along a railway right of way, including three in an industrial area near Brentwood last Friday. Smith credits the lack of fires to greater public awareness. But if that vigilance falters, or bad luck ignites a bush blaze, Smith said his crews are more than up to the task. “We’re ready for anything,” said Smith. “Our guys are well-trained, they’re ready to respond.” Part of the training includes firefighters with previous experience battling forest fires.
“We want to use our strengths,” said Smith. They’re stationed at Hall 7, at Canada Way and Gilmore, where specialized equipment is ready to roll into action. That equipment is comprised of a 4X4 hooked to a trailer carrying a six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle that can carry firefighters and gear into areas inaccessible by trucks, where they can pump special foam onto burning vegetation to suffocate the flames.

Construction work on Highway 1 and the Willingdon overpass this weekend means drivers will have to find alternate ways to get between north and south Burnaby. The overpass itself will be closed to northbound traffic between Canada Way and Still Creek Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Drivers are advised to take Gilmore Diversion or Douglas Road. The eastbound exit from Highway 1 to Willingdon will also be closed. Instead drivers are advised to exit at Boundary Road or Sprott Street. Drivers wishing to access the eastbound Highway 1 are advised to use Grandview Highway or the Kensington exit. The closures will allow crews to continue their work on the new Willingdon interchange. The Port Mann/ Highway 1 Improvement Project aims to significantly reduce congestion and travel times on Highway 1.

New mural near Royal Oak may eventually span Pacific Ocean Mario Bartel
photo@burnabynewsleader.com
The 220-foot long expanse of cinder block wall beneath the SkyTrain guideway just east of Royal Oak station will be the canvas for Todd Polich’s biggest mural yet. Eventually he hopes the art will span the Pacific Ocean. Polich and a team of 15 kids from the leadership group at South Burnaby Neighbourhood House have started putting paint to the barren side of a storage warehouse owned by Alpha Technologies, transforming it to the blue-and-green undersea world of migrating humpback whales. He’s currently in negotiation with officials in Hawaii and Australia to extend the scene to walls in communities there, paralleling the real world migration pattern of the gigantic mammals. For Polich, a veteran muralist whose paintings decorate more than 30 walls throughout Metro Vancouver, the process of creating his out-sized art has become less about brushstrokes, more about storytelling and connecting communities. “This has been a much more organic process,” said Polich during a break under the hot summer sun. “There’s more of an opportunity than just creating art.” That process started more than a year-and-a-half ago, working with the City of Burnaby and their ongoing effort to beautify neighbourhoods and prevent unsightly graffiti. The wall is right along the BC Parkway, busy on a sunny afternoon with walkers, cyclists and commuters hurrying to catch SkyTrain. Some stop to ponder the emerging scene. “People are pretty amazed at the transformation of the wall,” said Mohammadi. “Sometimes I turn around, I can see the people and the look they have on their faces says a lot,” said Trengove. Some ask what’s going on, question the sanity of painting such a huge wall. Polich plays coy to “keep a bit of the magic of the project” alive in their imaginations. Regulars on their way to work or to play pickup basketball at nearby Burnaby South secondary ask how the work is going. “You get to know people in the area,” said Polich. “It’s less about the art and more about the engagement.”

Firefighters responding to a brush or forest fire are also equipped with a wildland backpack containing all the tools they need to hack their way into an area and evaluate the scene. While Smith recalls only one recent instance where a helicopter was called in to drop water on a fire at Burnaby Mountain near Mammoth Studios, he said the city’s urban environment means most of its natural areas are in close enough proximity to roads that crews can lay 1,000 feet of hose from a pumper truck into the bush. “I’ve been doing this for 36 years,” said Smith. “Each season there’s a different type of situation.”

PuBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9
ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Hampered Harper Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other political party leaders will be hitting the barbecue circuit across Canada, trying to keep ground troops motivated with a federal election two years away. Harper may come to this area again — he has often attended former senator Gerry St. Germain’s barbecue at his South Surrey ranch. The public likely won’t know if he does come, as the media are usually barred from attending. Interestingly, this is one reason why the barbecues are more important than ever for Harper this summer. For the first time since he has become Conservative party leader, he has an opponent with a formidable brand name — Justin Trudeau of the federal Liberals. While Trudeau is an untested commodity, thus far attack ads mounted by the Conservatives have had almost no effect. The Conservative brand itself has been badly tainted by the Senate expense scandal, and particularly by Senator Mike Duffy, a former member of the media who is facing numerous investigations. Because the prime minister has so little time for local media, most of whom have no interest in the battles between the Ottawa press gallery and the government, he foregoes the chance to get his message out. He has let himself become defined as an angry man, barricaded at 24 Sussex Drive, ranting at a long enemies list. While Trudeau is untested, and the Trudeau brand has glaring weaknesses in Western Canada, Harper may have finally met his match after demolishing three earlier Liberal leaders. He could have had trouble with the NDP under Jack Layton, but thus far Thomas Mulcair hasn’t done too much damage to him. Harper needs to reach the public without the Ottawa filter — and the barbecue circuit is one of the few ways he does so. —Langley Times/Black Press

Are rising gas prices changing habits? The soaring price of gasoline is on the minds of many people this summer. There is some evidence, mostly anecdotal, that it is starting to change people’s habits. I’ve heard that Vancouver Island is hungry for tourists this summer. While gas prices are just one factor—the main one being the huge expense of taking the ferry—they can’t be dismissed. Additionally, the long lines going to and from the U.S. are at least partially driven by gas prices. Even though gas prices there have also risen steeply, gas remains cheaper south of the border, largely because there is far less tax on gas in Washington state. Unfortunately, the cheaper gas price leads to more Canadians doing other shopping in the U.S. and killing two birds with one stone. They are also hurting local businesses and reducing local tax revenue.
Frank Bucholtz I was driving in a number of areas of Surrey last Sunday and was quite surprised at how few vehicles there were on the road, particularly as the Fusion Festival was on—an event that was supposed to attract 100,000 people. While many used transit, which is great, one would think some people might drive. But judging by the few vehicles I saw in the middle of the day, many people weren’t driving anywhere. The high levels of taxation on gasoline are the prime reason that gas is often $1.50 per litre in most parts of the Lower Mainland. When it hit that level in 2008,

people were outraged. This time around, it seems people are quietly fighting back. In my area of Langley, prices have been a little lower, mainly due to Costco opening up a gas bar and lowering their prices. This has caused other retailers to follow suit, although the prices just across the Surrey border in Cloverdale are often up to 10 cents a litre higher. TransLink and the provincial and federal governments aren’t about to lower gas taxes, even by half cent a litre. They are addicted to the revenue. That’s why we will never see the carbon tax go away. Even if it was scientifically proven that the earth was cooling, that tax is staying. And when a politician judges that he or she can get away with it, it will be boosted. While most people would live with high gas taxes if there was an alternative, that alternative

does not often exist in Langley and other areas of the Lower Mainland. People in these places have poor or no transit service, and that’s why they get angry when they hear about subways to UBC and gondolas to Simon Fraser University. World oil prices have risen, and that has something to do with our gas prices. But according to experts, it seems they have more to do with refinery shutdowns, wholesale prices and even the lack of pipeline capacity. One thing is for sure: Most people have no more money in their pockets than they did last summer. So with the price of gas as much as 20 cents a litre more than it was a year ago, that means many people are driving much less than usual. Frank Bucholtz is editor of The Langley Times.

Enjoy Delta blues down by the Fraser The Hyack Festival Association’s summer concert series Concerts on the Quay continues this weekend in New Westminster with a performance by award-winning blues duo Hans Theessink and Terry Evans on Saturday, Aug. 3. Theessink and Evans are two experienced and respected musicians who are from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean but work together beautifully. Dutch-born Theessink is a roots and blues institution in Europe with a rich baritone voice and unmistakable guitar work. Evans hails from Vicksburg, Mississippi in the heart of Delta blues country and may be best known for his long working relationship as a backing vocalist with the legendary Ry Cooder. Timeless blues, gospel and soul come alive in the capable hands of these two masters. With just two guitars and two remarkable voices, they bring forth a stripped-down and unhurried vibe that is contagious and soulful.
Their new release, Delta Time, was recorded in Los Angeles and is receiving widespread acclaim. Sharing the stage with Theessink and Evans are Tonye Aganaba, Ben Rogers and Alex Maher. Aganaba is a sultry soul singer originally from the UK. She will be accompanied by her big band. Ben Rogers’ the commander of storytelling through song accompanied by tasty guitar licks. Lastly, Alex Maher is a talented pianist and vocalist. Concerts at the Quay is a summer waterfront concert series that takes place outside the River Market. They are presented by River Market and put on by Hyack Festival Association. The show begins at 5 p.m. The anticipated schedule is as follows: 5 pm - Alex Maher 6 pm - Ben Rogers 7 pm - Tonye Aganaba 8 pm - Hans Theessink & Terry Evans
+
Hans Theessink (left) and Terry Evans perform with a warm Delta blues sound, and will take the stage at about 8 p.m. on Saturday night, just outside New West’s River Market. ConTRibuTed phoTo

Life among the trees at Intergulf’s Cedar Creek By Kerry Vital
There’s nothing as wonderful as coming home after a long day and relaxing. The townhomes at Intergulf Development Group’s Cedar Creek North are like a breath of fresh air on Coquitlam’s master-planned community of Burke Mountain. “When you buy at Cedar Creek you can rest assured that you are getting the best-built townhomes the industry has to offer,” says Intergulf ’s Sasha Faris. “Our townhomes offer luxurious
finishes, great design and a palatable price to go along with it.” The homes at Cedar Creek are spacious and inviting, with their open floorplans and beautiful features. The kitchens are particularly gorgeous, with their stainless-steel appliances, custom-built Shaker-style wood cabinetry, natural granite countertop and island and chic glass mosaic tile backsplash. The bathrooms feature their own custom-built Shaker-style cabinetry, complemented by a natural granite countertop with a granite backsplash, vanity mirror with matching wood frame

and a modern custom-built cubic vessel sink. A soaker tub and rain-head shower nozzle adds to the feeling of calm in the space, along with a sleek ceramic tile bath-shower surround and porcelain tile floor. The electric fireplace in every home is perfect for gathering around for some cozy downtime, or if you’re in the mood for some sun, the lush landscaping draws you outside. You’ll also find private balconies, patios and decks in the homes at Cedar Creek. Burke Mountain features several parks and schools in the neighbourhood, with shopping, dining and recreation opportunities just minutes away in the Coquitlam Centre area. The community is a highly sought-after location, so Faris notes that time is running out to purchase. “With this being the last phase of the Cedar Creek townhouse project, this is the final chance to own affordable luxury atop Burke Mountain,” she says. Homes at Cedar Creek North start at $419,900 and are move-in ready. For more information about Cedar Creek, visit www.cedarcreekhomes.ca or call 604-880-1880.

The homes at Citadel Heights are built in a Craftsman style, with private decks and porches. Among the gorgeous features you’ll find in your new home is a convenient kitchen island, stainless-steel appliances and plenty of space to entertain, bottom right.
Exceptional homes at Citadel Heights By Kerry Vital
Bluetree Homes is hitting new heights with Citadel Heights, its single-family home community in Port Coquitlam. With an established location, gorgeous homes and the peace of mind that comes with buying from a well-known developer (Bluetree comes from ParkLane Homes), there’s no better time to buy than right now.
The surrounding Citadel Heights neighbourhood is becoming a popular place to live, and these 29 homes are selling quickly. “The response to this new community has been outstanding,” says Bluetree’s General Manager, Sales and Marketing Yosh Kasahara. “We’ve already sold all of the homes in our initial release and are now pre-selling homes that will complete later this year.” Bluetree is known as your friendly neighbourhood builder, and the reputation continues with Citadel Heights. The Craftsman-style architecture and rich exterior colours combine to make for a striking picture as you arrive home. There’s definitely no shortage of curb appeal here. “Our buyers love the Craftsman-style architecture of these homes,” says Kasahara. “These homes will retain their value because they have that timeless look.”
Join GVHBA Wednesday, Aug. 14 and network with the best!
The four- and five-bedroom floorplans range from 2,800 to 3,515 square feet. Big windows and a great room layout in some homes combine for an airy, spacious feeling that lets the natural light flow from room to room. You’ll especially love the dramatic vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom. Every home includes plenty of outdoor living space, with either decks or patios and front porches. You’ll also find a neighbourhood with mature landscaping, and established parks and schools just minutes away. The gourmet kitchens are centrally located in every home for maximum convenience. That continues with their eating nooks, breakfast bars and kitchen islands, making entertaining or a quick meal extremely easy. Buyers are able to choose between traditional shaker-style cabinetry or a modern flat-
panel style. Stainless-steel appliances are complemented by the quartz composite stone countertops, ceramic tile backsplash and sophisticated undermount cabinet lighting. Hand-set porcelain tile flooring is included in the entrance, kitchen and nook, powder room and laundry room, with elegant engineered hardwood throughout the rest of the main livings areas. The gas fireplace with its contemporary quartz composite stone surround and custom-designed mantel is sure to be a showpiece, or just the perfect place to relax. In the ensuite, you’ll find quartz composite stone countertops, a spa-like tub and shower with a decorative ceramic and glass accent and your choice of shaker-style or chic flatpanel cabinetry. Citadel Heights is perfectly situated, with shopping, dining, schools and recreation very close by. You’ll also have easy access to the rest of the Lower Mainland via Lougheed Highway or Highway 1, giving you the best of both worlds: a quiet neighbourhood within easy reach of every amenity you can imagine. “This community is unique because the surrounding neighbourhood is already established,” Kasahara says. “We know these homes won’t last long because there simply isn’t anything like this available in the market today.” Homes start at $829,900. For more information, visit bluetreehomes.ca, call 604468-2169 or visit the sales centre at 2195 Nova Scotia Avenue, Port Coquitlam, open daily except Fridays between noon and 5 p.m.
