Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Creating Texture With Grasses
With the growing season in full swing, this is a great time to go for a walk through our local neighbourhoods to have a look at the various plant creations displayed along roadways, in front yards, on porches and patios. It is inspiring to see the different approaches, from mass plantings of one flower to borders and baskets stunning with different colours and textures. If there is one group of plants that can instantly add interest and drama to any space, it is ornamental grasses. They are unique as their blades sway gracefully in the slightest breeze, capturing the magic of the wind and bringing a sense of motion to a garden like no other plant can. The sound of grasses rustling in the wind also gives a new and truly special experience to the senses. Grasses can be subtle or extremely dramatic and offer year round interest, including giving a fabulous effect in the winter. With ornamental grasses you have many planting options, using them as lowgrowing edging, the centre piece for an exciting planter, or large, back-of-the border specimens and everything in between. Leaf size and texture can change from variety to variety and their range of colour is truly amazing. Ornamental grasses can be green, metallic blue, silver, purple, yellow and even blood red. One grass in particular has grabbed the attention of gardeners in the area - in large part thanks to great public garden designs by the City of Cranbrook and Communities in Bloom. The answer to the question: “What is the name of that grass growing up town and on the highway?” is Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’. This grass is an early bloomer, which is an asset in areas with a short growing season. The blossoms change colour throughout the season and remain on the plant until winter snow brings them down. You can pick the blooms at different stages of their development to add them as accents for a colourful arrangement. In 2001, the ‘Karl Foerster’ even took the honour of being named Perennial of the Year. A really cool grass which is a relative of the famous ‘Karl Foerster’ is Calamagrostis Brachytrichia, also called 'Korean Feather Reed Grass'. It is a mid-sized plant, with clumps between 36” and 42”, topped with fluffy bottle-brush like plumes that open slightly pink and dry to a bronze hue. Other varieties in the Calamagrostis family are 'Avalanche', 'Overdam' and 'El Dorado'. With their variegated foliage, they make a great complement and contrast at the same time. The varying heights and colour combinations are truly spectacular both from afar and close up. Another popular landscape choice is Helictotrichon otherwise known as ‘Blue Oat Grass’. It truly makes a statement with its perfect dome-shaped clumps of intensely blue leaves, sending up tan spikes and huge plumes of seed heads. The Carex and Sedge families of plants, though not true grasses, are also great accent plants. They prefer a more shaded moist location such as a marginal plant beside your pond or just to brighten up a shady spot in your yard. They are also a great accent in pots or containers and hold their shape and colour well into fall. Grasses are quite easy to maintain. Usually, all you need to do is cut down and clear away the previous year's growth in late fall or early spring. A very interesting factor is also that most grasses are deer resistant, although - like with all plants - a curious ungulate might take a nibble. So if you are searching for that perfect accent for your landscape, take a closer look at grasses for drama and texture. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

Premier sworn in, launches core review
BC Government Photo
Clerk of the legislature Craig James administers the oath of office to Premier Christy Clark, making her officially the MLA for Westside-Kelowna. The private ceremony was held outside cabinet offices at Canada Place, Vancouver Tuesday. by Tom Fletcher Premier Christy Clark took a break from cabinet meetings in Vancouver Tuesday to be sworn in as MLA for Westside-Kelowna. One of the cabinet’s first tasks is to launch a “core review” of government programs, with a target of reducing overall program
spending by $50 million this year. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett is in charge of the cost-cutting exercise, and is to release terms of reference for it on Wednesday. Clark has described this core review as different from the one that former premier Gordon Campbell led after the B.C. Liberal Party
formed government in 2001. The new review will focus on identifying functions that don’t need to be done by government, and reducing excessive regulation that Clark described as a natural accumulation of all governments over time. Clark led the B.C. Liberals to a 48-seat majority in the May 14
election, but lost her own seat in VancouverPoint Grey. WestsideKelowna MLA Ben Stewart agree to step aside so Clark could run in that seat, which she won handily in a July 10 by-election.
Separate detachments for cities Submitted
The cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley in consultation with the South East District RCMP, are pleased to announce the re-establishment of separate detachments for both cities. The service delivery provided to each community will be seamless in the transition to the former model of stand alone detachments. There will be no visible impact to either community and jail cells for Kimberley will remain in Cranbrook, under a separate agreement between the two cities. This initiative will allow the new Kimber-
ley Detachment Commander to open the communication lines between the Kimberley detachment and the South East District in Kelowna. “It does not have any financial implication for either Cranbrook or Kimberley”, said Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae. “It has no affect, other than allow our Kimberley RCMP detachment the ability to consult and communicate with the Regional Office directly, while maintaining support services we currently have in place.” With the recent retirement of the former Inspector in Cranbrook, a review of the integration took place
and both communities have opted to establish two independent Detachments. The two communities are different in a number of ways despite their close proximity. It is felt that these differences are better served with an independent detachment model. “We are proud to provide policing services for a variety of municipalities in the Southeast District region of BC. The BC RCMP is committed to providing the most effective policing services requested and required based on the needs of the individual communities and the region. We can assure the communities of Kimberley and Cran-
brook will continue to be well served by the RCMP,” stated Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela. Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski added, “Cranbrook City Council is comfortable with having separate detachments for our two cities, because we know that both detachments will continue to support one another whenever it is required.” As part of their next steps, the City of Cranbrook with the assistance of the RCMP, plan on implementing a new Staff Sergeant Detachment Commander sometime later this year.

The Cranbrook RCMP enlisted the help of a crisis negotiation team that made contact with the man and were eventually successful in having the male exit the residence and surrender to police without incident. The male was arrested and immediately transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital where he was assessed for any medical needs and eventually released into police custody on Friday morning. The 44 yr old man has since had a bail hearing and has been ordered released from police custody pending appearance in Cranbrook Provincial Court August 12th facing four charges for Uttering Threats. On Thursday, members of the Cranbrook RCMP were successful in de-escalating a tense situation involving a male at a residence who was uttering threats of violence. Cranbrook General Duty members were assisted by RCMP provincial resources including the Southeast District Crisis Incident Negotiators Team who were successful in having the man brought into custody without incident. On the 25th day of July, 2013 at approximately 5pm, the Cranbrook RCMP responded to a complaint of a distraught male inside his residence in the Standard Hill Trailer Park. It was reported to police that the man was behaving erratically and was emotionally distraught. The RCMP responded and were confronted by an aggressive and agitated male who refused to cooperate with police. Members of the Cranbrook RCMP established a containment 1

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. On Friday July 26, the East Kootenay Energy Diet was officially launched in Cranbrook with dignitaries and community members enjoying the good weather and a barbeque lunch. Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski welcomed the crowd on behalf of the City, and representatives from FortisBC, BC Hydro, Columbia Basin Trust and the Regional District of East Kootenay all spoke to their sup-
port of the initiative. Minister of Energy and Mines, Bill Bennett officially kicked off the event, and confirmed the Province’s support for innovative approaches to saving energy. “The BC Clean Energy Act emphasizes the need for energy conservation. The East Kootenay Energy Diet is a perfect example of an initiative that directly supports the policy direction of the Act, while also helping residents realize cost savings on their energy

bills.” Community-specific launches are planned this fall in Fernie, Sparwood, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Invermere, and Radium Hot Springs. The RDEK, Sparwood and Fernie are the first local governments to confirm that they will provide a $50 discount on an energy assessment to the first fifty people who sign up for the East Kootenay Energy Diet in their communities. Further to that, Fernie and Sparwood will be subsidizing post-retrofit assessment, which have a value of $150. This means that early birds get a detailed energy assessment and savings recommendations for their home for as little as $40. In combination with an incentive from LiveSmart BC, this is a substantial savings from the typical $300 cost for a home energy assessment. Len Luders of Fairmont Hot Springs was the first registrant for the East Kootenay Energy Diet: “We have been thinking of doing an energy assessment for some time. The timing of the Energy Diet is perfect. We look forward to learning how we can improve the efficiency of our home.” By receiving this initial assessment, homeowners will have access to a variety of incentives and rebates to help implement the recommendations. Mayor Giuliano of Fernie explained: “We are committed to saving energy and money. We’ve reduced energy consumption in our own municipal operations and have realized significant savings as a result. Now it is time to help our citizens do the same.” The East Kootenay Energy Diet is delivered by Community Energy Association and is made possible by funding from BC Hydro, Columbia Basin Trust, the Regional District of East Kootenay, and FortisBC, as well as partnerships with LiveSmart BC, East Kootenay Community Credit Union and Kootenay Savings Credit Union. Local gardening and permaculture expert Chris Vassallo discusses the benefits of the “no-dig” potato growing method at a previous One World Gardening Workshop in Kimberley.
More gardening workshops offered Submitted “The One World Garden Workshop series has been lots of fun so far, and there are still 4 more to come,” commented Shannon Duncan, coordinator of the One World Garden Project. As well as learning tricks and tips from a variety of local experts, there has been great food sponsored by the Snowdrift Café and prepared produce from the garden. For upcoming workshops, Hot Shots Café will also be offering up some of their delights and local gardens are producing abundantly so we are guaranteed more great food! The goal of these workshops is to welcome newcomers to our community, along with increasing the amount of food grown locally. If you are new to Canada or if you have a friend or neighbor who is new to Canada, invite them along with you for an evening of garden fun. There are written notes provided after each workshop, so don’t worry if you’ve missed the first ones. These workshops are a great opportunity to learn more about grow-
ing food in our area, as well as mingle with people in a casual atmosphere. It’s easy to relax in the garden, and a wonderful way to meet new people. The garden provides a neutral backdrop where people relax and open up to their surroundings naturally. They are also a great introduction to local community gardens that anyone in the community is able to access free of cost. These workshops are part of the Welcoming Communities initiative and are a partnership between Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook and Cranbrook Food Action Committee, made possible through funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of BC. The next workshop, Berries, Roots, and New Shoots, is August 6 in Kimberley and August 7 in Cranbrook, 6-8pm. The workshops are free and a light meal included, but registration is required. Call Shannon at (250)427-7981 or email (Cranbrook) cranbrookfood@gmail. com (Kimberley) Shannon@wildsight.ca .

Burn Camp celebrates another year
Photo submitted
Burn Camp participants, campers and counsellors enjoyed a motorcycle and classic car show during this year’s camp. by Murray Robertson Burn Camp 2013 has come and gone and I was lucky enough to be part of this amazing experience. This year 72 kids from across British Columbia were brought in to Camp Latona on Gambier Island. This year in my cabin we had 8 boys aged 6-10, 4 returnees and 4 new campers. The campers all have one thing in common; they are all burn survivors who have spent some time in a burn unit. The camper’s burn injuries have occurred from many different causes. There are campers who have been burned by hot liquids, electricity, campfires, structure fires and other means. The leading cause of burns to the campers seems to be from hot liquids and the majority of these could have easily been prevented. Hot liquid
scalds can come from hot water from the tap, spills from coffee pots, crock pots and hot liquids in mugs. A small amount of hot liquid can do severe damage to young children as their skin is four times more sensitive than an adult. Burn Camp provides the campers with an opportunity to interact with other kids who have gone through similar traumatic experiences. It allows them to connect with others and provides a refuge where they can just be kids and not have to worry about their scars. It is evident that some new campers are uncomfortable showing their scars at the start of camp however by the end of camp they have no worries about them. Camp gives the kids an opportunity to work on the emotional healing that is very necessary with such injuries. It provides the kids with
a support network that they can rely on for years to come. The campers and counsellors form a close knit group and liken it to a second family. At camp the campers take part in challenging activities such as obstacle courses, zip lines, as well as low and high rope challenges. These activities are meant to push the campers past their comfort zone and help build trust and confidence. It is amazing to see the kids and how they improve at these challenges every year. While taking part in these activities the campers are split up into groups of boys and girls aged 6 to 18. This allows the kids to interact with many different individuals of all ages. While at camp the kids are kept quite busy but there is lots of time for them to hang out with their old friends and to make new
friends. Camp activities such as hip hop dancing, self defense training, cheerleading and skit night are encouraged as they are fun activities for all. The weather held out this year and most of our down time was spent swimming and fishing in the ocean. The highlight for many campers and counsellors this year was the cruise ship that was rented for our annual dance. We had the chance to tour the harbour while dancing the night away. Burn camp is a truly up lifting experience and it puts one’s life into perspective, I feel blessed that I am able to partake each year. Many burn injuries are preventable; whether caused by electricity, candles, hot liquids, camp fires or playing with flammable substances, most burns can been easily prevented with a little education or parental supervision. Fire Prevention/Burn Awareness are very important subjects that all families should discuss with their children and it is important to eliminate the opportunity for children to misuse fire. For more information on fire prevention/burn awareness Please visit burnfund. org or call the Cranbrook Fire department at 250-426-2325 Please take the time to watch the “Too hot for tots” video at burnfund. org. Murray Robertson is the area’s local Burn Fund representative.
Whitecaps FC announce local academy Submitted Vancouver Whitecaps FC regional head coach David Broadhurst will be in Nelson from August 10 to 18 to lead the evaluations for the Whitecaps FC Kootenay Prospects Academy. Boys and girls ages U-10 to U-18 will have the opportunity to be evaluated for selection and invitation to the Kootenay Prospects program, which will include up to four boys and four girls training groups with 16 to 20 players per training group. “We really enjoyed our inaugural year in the Kootenays and learned more about how the program can have the greatest impact and
benefit for local players,” said Whitecaps FC director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. “Based on that we have made some adjustments this year that will provide a regular Whitecaps FC presence in the Kootenays, more regular contact with the players, and increased communication.” The program, including all sessions, will be run by Whitecaps FC Okanagan regional head coach David Broadhurst and will include a 10-month program with three phases, running September through June, with weekly training sessions. There will also be one travel weekend per phase, which last year included an MLS weekend in Van-
couver featuring an onfield training session and a Whitecaps FC MLS match. “The club’s desire is to have an overall regional program strategy that will allow the Prospects Academy to be accessible to the best players in the Kootenay region,” said Broadhurst. “In this coming 2013-14 cycle, we will operate a West program which will primarily be open to players from Nelson and Kootenay South. The objective will be to work towards a similar East program for the fall of 2014-15. This will then provide the ability to connect the two programs for select training and events.” Whitecaps FC currently provide technical
services to the Nelson Youth Soccer Association and hope to expand these services to other areas of the Kootenays. To be selected for the Whitecaps FC Prospects Academy, all players must register for the evaluation process. Evaluation sessions will be held at Lakeside Park in Nelson during the weekends of August 10 and 11 and again on August 17 to 18. Players interested in registration for the evaluation can visit whitecapsfc.com/academy and select Kootenay Academy or contact David Broadhurst at dbroadhurst@whitecapsfc.com or by phone at 250.550.5489.

Johann Klantschnig "John" - "Opa" - "Hans" 1922 - 2013 Johann Klantschnig of Cranbrook passed away peacefully in the East Kootenay Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 91 years of age. John was born on April 30, 1922. He immigrated to Canada from Austria in 1953. John lived and worked in the Columbia Valley upon his arrival in Canada. He worked in Sawmills, and as a mechanic, owned and operated "Little Valley" at Canal Flats and later operated the Fairmont Esso in Fairmont Hot Springs until his retirement. After retiring, John enjoyed fishing, camping, travelling to the USA, Alaska and Austria with Erna. John had many "fish tales" to tell from White Swan to Kookanusa and other BC lakes he fished. He loved his "OomPaPa" music and could dance a "mean" polka. He was also very crafty with his metal work and welding, creating many pieces for family and friends. John was known for his work hard, play hard ethic and would like us to raise a glass of wine or schnapps in remembrance. John will be sadly missed by his family and friends, but never forgotten. ...Till we meet again. John is survived by his number 1 fishing partner and loving wife of 64 years Erna, his daughter Gabby of Calgary, his son John of Creston, his number 2 fishing partner his grandson Michael of Calgary, and several nieces in Austria. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
