blistered my fingers. It was that hot.” Barely a minute after she heard the first pop, the house was filled with thick, black smoke. “It was so thick I couldn’t even see my daughter near me.” Georgelin, her daughter, their great Dane George and English mastiff Ginny all escaped through the front door and watched in horror as flames engulfed their cars and quickly swallowed their home, located near Haney Nokai Park. “We were all scared the cars were going to blow up,” Georgelin said.

A freedom of information request to view the video of the entire Maple Ridge committee of the whole meeting on June 17 has been rejected by the district’s freedom of information officer, Ceri Marlo. The request was made by The News after the video was removed from the district website, then reposted with some parts of the video excised. According to Mayor Ernie Daykin, the video was removed because some comments by Coun. Corisa Bell could be considered defamatory, according to the district’s lawyer. “Legal counsel has offered an opinion that the possibility exists that your remarks could give rise to an action in defamation,” Daykin told Bell in a June 25 letter. The legal action could come from the staff member involved. The district could be liable if it republished those comments by posting the video on its website, the mayor said in a letter to Bell. But in the letter from Marlo, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is cited as justification for not releasing the video. Under the act, the district can’t disclose information that would “unreasonably invade the personal privacy” of a third party. “The act gives the district no discretion in such cases – we are legally obligated to refuse access.” She writes in her explanation that the comments can be described in general terms as a “negative, critical assessment” of the performance of an identifiable employee.

Almost nothing was salvageable from the fire.

A fire that destroyed a house early Saturday in Maple Ridge leaving a family homeless is being investigated as an arson. The blaze tore through the two-storey house on Dunbar Street just before 3 a.m., burning the structure to its frame. It’s the second arson fire in the neighbourhood and the fifth in the downtown core in the past

three months. Joanne Georgelin was sound asleep when the fire started, but woke up to a loud pop, followed by a bang. She ran out of her bedroom to the front door and saw an orange “fireball” on her deck. As the blaze grew, Georgelin ran back into her bedroom, grabbed her phone, one of her dogs and frantically yelled for her daughter Rebecca, who was asleep on the same floor. “I was screaming at my daughter the whole time to get out,” says Georgelin. “When I put my fingers on the chain to unchain the door, it

s a lifeguard, Karlie Erickson regularly trains to save lives. More often than not, a typical shift of a life guard at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre means treating minor bumps and bruises, twists and strains on the pool deck and around the building. Monday, July 29 seemed no different. While on the evening shift, Erickson got a call from the weight room upstairs. “At first, I thought it was one of those routine calls – and when I went up there, I found him not breathing.” Lindsey Bennett, in his early 60s, had just replaced some weights back into the racks, then collapsed and was face up on the floor, eyes wide open, heart stopped. Erickson went into autopilot. First, she did a breath check. Bennett was doing what they call

chest compressions, then giving two more breaths, followed by 30 more compressions. “We just kept on going.” Close behind her was fellow life-

guard Anthony Salitra, with an automated external defibrillator. As Erickson continued CPR, Salitra prepared the defibrillator, then placed two electric pads on Bennett’s chest and administered two shocks within two-minute spans. With each shock, Bennett’s body convulsed and his arms and legs splayed in four directions. After seven minutes, paramedics took over. On the third shock, Bennett showed signs of life. Within 15 minutes, he was on a stretcher on his way to hospital, breathing on his own. “I just did my job and responded to the call like any first aid call,” Salitra said. “There was no panic at any point.” Together, they saved a life. “I definitely couldn’t have done it without him,” Erickson said of Salitra. After the incident, he just continued his shift of keeping people safe in the water. “I’d say, I’m extremely proud of

our staff and how they responded,” Leisure Centre manager Janice Forsyth said. “Everybody just teamed together. It was phenomenal.” Rose Bennett, Lindsey’s wife, said she wanted to get the word out after hearing from the cardiologist at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Without the leisure centre’s staff help, the family would be planning a funeral, the doctor said. “His heart stopped four times while he was there,” she said. “He’s had absolutely no heart damage that’s permanent. Without their response time [using CPR and the defibrillator], he would have had permanent heart damage and he wouldn’t have made it.” After such incidents, Leisure Centre staff are debriefed, Forsyth explained. “It’s definitely one those things that you have to work through,” Erickson said. She was happy to hear that Bennett is coming back to the gym. “I’m looking forward to seeing him happy and smiling.”

Mediation ‘died’ after last council meeting Coun. Bell no longer willing to meet after ‘ambush’ by counterparts by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

Mediation late last month could have resolved Coun. Corisa Bell’s complaint against a senior staff member with the District of Maple Ridge. But chances of that died following the council meeting July 23, when two councillors and the mayor read out statements and stirred up feelings all over again. “It’s pretty astonishing,” Bell said Saturday. “The mayor hasn’t called to say anything about what’s happening.” Couns. Cheryl Ashlie and Judy Dueck read out statements directed at Bell, while Mayor Ernie Daykin wanted to clarify that council is open and respectful to all its members. Bell said that before council met, mediation was in the process of being set up that would include herself, the mayor and her consultant, Wilf McIntyre, as well as the district’s chief administrator, Jim Rule, along with a mediator. Bell had complained about Rule following a conversation between them after a June 10 council workshop meeting. Rule, in response, previously said he has private conversations with individual councillors on district matters, but doesn’t want to discuss those private conversations. “The mayor is aware of the issue and I have every confidence he will deal with it appropriately,” Rule said then. Wilf McIntrye, a labour consultant, said

the meeting could have settled the issue. Initially, the meeting was supposed to take place between Bell, Rule and the mediator, but Bell wanted McIntyre present. The mayor was also included. Bell then agreed to that composition. But after the July 23 council, during which comments were directed at Bell, she didn’t want to continue the process. “If they’re going to treat her like Coun. Bell that, might as well carry on and wait until the next election and see how it all falls out,” McIntyre said. But there has to be some resolution, he added. “The whole council is a mess. Sometimes there’s no control there.” Daykin said mediation has always been offered to Bell and that she seemed in favour of a broader meeting, but that he hadn’t received anything in writing. “There had been discussion about it, but to say it had been set and ready to go is not correct, in my opinion.” That offer of mediation still stands, he added. Daykin said he decided to prepare a statement for the July 23 meeting after reading a letter to the editor. Ashlie then called him, saying she wanted to issue a statement. “There was no meeting coordinating anything. That is absolutely ridiculous,” said Ashlie, adding she just wants to move on from the issue. Ashlie also said Dueck previously had been working on her own statement. Bell said the comments weren’t just short points to make their views known, but all together, went on for 50 minutes. Bell called three points of order to get the mayor to intervene, but was refused

each time. Usually, council reports given at the end of the meeting highlight events or meetings councillors attended in the past few weeks. “They carried on as they wanted to. We just don’t follow proper procedure,” Bell said. “He’s our mayor. He’s not supposed to have a bias the way he does. The mayor led the ambush to attack me in a council meeting.” Ashlie has said that media is mixing issues – Bell’s complaint about Rule and the removal and editing of the video recording from the June 17 committee of the whole meeting, where Bell is said to have made possibly defamatory comments. Daykin asked that a lawyer review the video and was told that parts of it should be removed from the video that’s posted online. While Bell and her lawyer could review the video at the municipal hall, Bell still wants to know what she said during budget discussions that were possibly defamatory. Bell’s lawyer can also get a copy of the video. Meanwhile, Bell’s been told by her lawyer that she also could have a case of defamation against the district implying that she was making defamatory comments. But costs to pursue that would be huge. “I really believe, 100 per cent, that the tape is public property. It should never have been kept from the public.” Bell said she’s been on the Lower Mainland Local Government Association for two years now and sees how other municipalities function and says Maple Ridge needs to improve the way it works. “At the very least, we need to practise proper governance.”

‘Tape is public property’ FOI from front

Marlo adds that “public exposure of untested allegations by a council member about an employee’s performance may unfairly damage the employee’s reputation …” – something which must be considered under the FOI act. That’s why such matters are usually dealt with in closed meetings. The comments also were ruled out of order by the chair, which is a critical factor because it shows that the chair considered that the matter wasn’t fully discussed. However, media lawyer David F. Sutherland said earlier that comments in a public meeting are unlikely to lead to a lawsuit. “There’s a very wide protection for a fair and accurate report, which a videotape would be, of a council meeting,” under Sec. 4 of the Libel and Slander Act. Sutherland said if publishing what happens at a council meeting has an ulterior motive, there is a limit to the privilege, but it’s not exceeded by a councillor’s questioning of budgets at a council meeting. “That is really highly unlikely,” he said. “There are so many other checks and balances.” Councillors are in the business of public service, he added. “The idea that somebody’s private reputation should interfere in the dissemination of information about what goes on in the public sphere is really troublesome to me.” Bell has seen the video and her lawyer can view the video at municipal hall. Her lawyer also can get his or her own copy. Bell maintains the video should be public.

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

The natural way A lush green lawn, freshly mowed and without weeds, is something to behold. The outfield grass of a professional baseball park or the green on a championship golf course are part of sports lore and are not achieved without much care and effort. Such grass is also the stuff of great gardens, the blanket between floral beds. And in the suburbs, it is the stuff of status – not the mention, it can help the resale value of homes. Companies make millions of dollars a year selling tools and agents to those whose job or passion it is to maintain such stately presentations. But all that is compromised in the summer by the sun, and watering restrictions, such as those in Metro Vancouver. From June 1 to Sept. 30, sprinkling residential properties can only be done three days a week, 4 a.m. to 9 a.m., on odd or even numbered days. Yet some sprinklers are working overtime. After a record-dry July, some lawns are as green as they were in April, a stark contrast to the plots as golden as a Saskatchewan wheat field. The latter is pretty in its own right, and hardly needs to be mowed. Nor does it require any more water than what falls from the sky, benefitting reservoirs in times of moderation. These lawns deserve respect, as do their owners, for being responsible and following the rules. We much admire the manicured green yards, and the attention they require. But unless you are moving soon, they are a nod to vanity, and unnecessary. Groom within reason – mow, pull weeds, water when allowed. But for the most part, let nature take its course. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

B.C. aboriginal progress fragile VICTORIA – The ceremonies have become common at the B.C. legislature. Government officials and aboriginal leaders gather to celebrate resource sharing agreements that allow economic development in areas that need employment but B.C. Views are hampered by a century of uncertainty Tom Fletcher and dispute over treaties, or lack thereof. This approach emerged a decade ago with forest agreements. The B.C. Liberal government bought back timber cutting licences from big forest firms and made them available for community forests and aboriginal communities, who claimed the areas as their traditional territories. Recently the approach was extended to mining revenues and water licence fees paid by private power developers. These are substantial steps forward for the only province in Canada in treaty limbo. A 2010 sharing deal worth more than $30 million in royalties for the Mount Milligan copper-gold mine north of Prince George helped the McLeod Lake Indian Band recover from the pine beetle and forestry slump that devastated its business base. After many years of struggle, Mount Milligan expects to go into production this year. Another agreement with Kamloops-area communities shared revenues from an expanded Afton mine. Perhaps the most ambitious agreement was concluded in March of this year when the government signed a deal with the

Tahltan Nation for mining and hydroelectric development in remote northwestern B.C. The deal clears the way for a major extension of the B.C. Hydro grid to power the Tahltan village of Iskut and also the Red Chris metal mine, opening up the region to other mining and Hydro potential, as well. To get that deal, the province put up $20 million last year to buy back Shell Canada’s coalbed gas leases in the Klappan region, headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers. Those leases had become a target of international protest. Even after these expensive concessions, it would be an error to conclude that all is well between the Tahltan and the province. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson questioned Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad on this point during the recent legislature session. The Tahltan Central Council was pleased about shared decision-making on resource projects, until they found out that B.C. had handed the environmental assessment of a new open-pit coal mine over to the federal government. The proposed mine is in the Klappan, known around the world as the Sacred Headwaters. Rustad said shared decision-making deals such as the Tahltan agreement do not cover activities of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Whether the review of that coal mine is federal, provincial or combined, it requires extensive consultation with affected parties. That’s great, but all that goodwill could evaporate quickly if a coal mine ends up getting a permit despite Tahltan objections. Rustad’s Nechako Lakes constituency is also a focal point for oil and gas pipeline

proposals. Donaldson highlighted another problem. Last year the government signed a reconciliation agreement with the Gitanyow First Nation near Terrace, one of many communities struggling to get through the B.C. treaty negotiation process. That agreement included a joint landuse plan. Then the Environmental Assessment Office asked the Gitanyow for its input on proposed gas pipelines through its territory, to feed the government’s liquefied natural gas plans. Again, the joint land-use plan has no provision for pipelines.

The Gitanyow hereditary chiefs wrote to the B.C. government in July, threatening to go to court over the pipeline proposal and questioning the value of their hard-won reconciliation agreement. The Gitanyow hereditary chiefs wrote to the B.C. government in July, threatening to go to court over the pipeline proposal and questioning the value of their hardwon reconciliation agreement. Resource revenue sharing agreements and shared land-use plans are well-intentioned and represent real progress. But these situations show how fragile they are. The News/letters NDP no road map, no destination Editor, The News: Re: NDP soul search going nowhere (B.C. Views, July 31) A significant aspect of NDP post-election soul searching, following its catastrophic defeat by the forces of free enterprise, will no doubt have to be coming to terms with the need to move the party further to the centre, away from its ideological far left-wing base. While the federal NDP appears to have decided to delete references to “socialism” from its guiding party preamble to make it more palatable politically and competitive electorally, merely removing “socialism as a founding principle, without jettisoning its politically outdated doctrine, will not convince Canadians that the NDP is anything but a socialist party. Shakespeare perhaps said it best in Romeo and Juliet: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Confronted with the political reality of the concept of socialism proving itself to be an abysmal failure throughout the world, being replaced by more free enterprise, less government and less social engineering, the question naturally arises as to whether B.C.’s NDP party will be able to jump over its own ideological shadow and abandon its traditional stand on the principles of democratic socialism, as defined in the B.C. provincial NDP constitutional preamble: “The New Democratic Party believes that social, economic and political progress in Canada can only be assured by the application of democratic socialist principles to government and the administration of public affairs ... including, where necessary, the extension of the principle of social ownership.” Stripped of its defining political raison d’être, however, NDP soul searching to remain a legitimate electoral contender in the province would make it a journey of heading somewhere into the future without the benefit of a road map and without a clear sense of its destination, always carrying the baggage of its political past. Scarred for life normal now Editor, The News: Re: Four years for daycare assaults (The News, Aug. 2). Just read your front page article on this and am truly appalled. I have raised two now grown girls, and am a hard working law abiding person. However, if this had happened to either of them, I would have been up on a murder charge. Four years minus time spent, and these children will be scarred for life. Seems the norm now. Barry McKeevr Maple Ridge

online comments What’s the big deal? Val Patenaude · Museums Director at Maple Ridge Historical Society: Re: Councillor hires councillor (mapleridgenews.com). I don’t see why people are making such a big deal over this. Being on council is a part-time job. Also, the two positions are very different in terms of their relative power within the respective organizations. Political people taking political jobs is not exactly unprecedented. • Roald Liset: Re: Dual role (News Views, Aug. 2). The clash between small town politics and ... the other.

‘Making an informed decision’ Editor, The News: Re: Taxpayers footing bill for both positions (Letters, Aug. 2). Cheryl Baron, I sincerely appreciate your concern and would like to answer on my own behalf, as, although I did speak with the mayor prior to taking on the role of constituency assistant, he should not bare the burden of explaining my decision. As for fulfilling my duties during the election, I fulfilled all of my council duties during my time as Dr. Doug Bing’s campaign manager. As a matter of fact, I am known for attending more events than that of my colleagues, who hold down full-time jobs, and that pattern did not change during my time as Dr. Bing’s campaign manager. My family was the part of my life that took a back seat, but they fully supported me, as they knew I viewed it as important. Just for your own information, the councillor role is part-time and people who are elected have many other activities going on in their lives. As far as what I do on my personal time outside of council duties, I am not aware of anything in law that prohib-

its me from being a campaign manager during an election. To the contrary, I believe the constitution would support my right to do so. On your point of partisanship, I think my record speaks for itself at the council table, as I have supported all issues and topics that assist in making Maple Ridge a great community, regardless of party lines. Ashlie There is nothing in law that prohibits me from being a constituency assistant. As a matter of fact, there is an NDP constituency assistant who is a city councillor in Port Coquitlam. I have noted this, as when I did my research as to whether I could accept this role, part of the confirmation came from the collective agreement that guides the NDP constituency assistant role. The agreement allows for a leave of absence if a CA is elected to a position. There is no language within the agreement that prevents the dual roles. It is worthy to note that collective agreements are structured to ensure they are not ultra virus to the laws of the land.

I looked over the qualifications of the role, as defined by the Liberal Party’s individual contract structure, and I assure you that I have all of the qualifications. Dr. Bing would never have offered me the role if I could not do the job. It is important that every citizen who walks through the door of the constituency office is served to the best of our ability and that will be

my goal. I understand conflict of interest and, like all others who must be aware of appearances of such, I will make sure I apply due diligence to ensure none occurs. And as assigned under the legislation, I will call my own conflict. I have stated all of this, as I want you to understand that I took this decision seriously and made sure that my decision was informed. I care deeply about this community and my focus will be what it has always been, to make this the best community it can be and assist citizens where and when needed. Coun. Cheryl Ashlie Maple Ridge

People flocking to corner of ‘Rocky’ Bell Editor, The News: Re: Councillors ‘ambush’ rookie Bell (The News, July 26). I attended the council meeting on Tuesday, July 23 to watch our elected representatives at work. What I witnessed was totally unprofessional conduct by three councillors and the mayor. Good ol’ boy Mayor Ernie Daykin went on a rant about how the new councillors were causing all the problems on council. He assumed no responsibility of any kind for the

turmoil. This opened the door for the verbal assaults by Couns. Cheryl Ashlie and Judy Dueck. Mayor Daykin woke up just in time to slow down another one from Coun. Mike Morden. The time used by these councillors is supposed to be for describing what they have been doing on behalf of the electorate, how they are earning their wages. Instead, they used this time to speak to their own private agendas, all of which were for personal

reasons, it seems. Wily old veteran Coun. Al Hogarth ( never one to back away from controversy) seemed fit to observe the proceedings and stay out of things. Coun. Robert Masse tried his best to lighten the mood at the table. He is a true asset on council. Coun. Corisa Bell quietly acknowledged the ambush, then went ( very professionally) to giving her report. A councillor with respect for the system, and she refused to lower herself to the

level of the mayor and his triumvirate. This ability to ‘take a licking and keep on ticking’ has earned her a new nickname to me, ‘Rocky Balboa’ Bell. A true home-grown champion, standing up and fighting for the people that elected her. People from all over the municipality are flocking to her corner. I will stand beside this councillor and the ethics that she brings to council. Go get’, Rocky. Gary J. Graham Maple Ridge

Rotary Duck Race raises $89,000 by T im Fit z geral d contributor

The Alouette River was awash in yellow Sunday as almost 9,000 rubber ducks made their way down it as part of the third annual Rotary Duck Race. The event raised $89,555 for a total of 27 non-profit organizations and Rotary youth projects in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The amount was up slightly from last year’s $88,500, said organizer Bob Schantz. “We didn’t know if we could top last year’s efforts, but we are very pleased at the support from the community.” He said organizers were encouraged by the number of youth groups who took part in this year’s

event, almost double from last year. Shantz said the funds will be distributed by the Rotary clubs on Sept. 18. He said the actual race, which takes about 10 minutes to

run, was the result of the hard work of a number of club members and a dedicated group of volunteers. “We couldn’t do this without their hard work.”

Race winners • Maria Scaglione was the first place winner of the 2013 Fiat 500, valued $25,000. The prize was donated by Fiat of Maple Ridge and Maple Ridge Chrysler. • Nancy Bilodeau was the winner of the $3,500 household furniture or appliances package thanks to Fuller Watson. • Amy McCallum won a one-week Alaskan Cruise, valued at $3,200, and donated by RBC Dominion Securities and Port Moody Travel. • Linda Ravenor won a one-week stay at Whistler, valued at $3,000, thanks to Mark’s Work Warehouse. • Lynee Douglas won a pair of rounds of golf for four, valued at $870, at Meadow Gardens Golf Course. • Carrie Booth won a $500 32’ flat screen TV from Audio Video Unlimited at Haney Sewing and Sound.

Top cop leaves RCMP detachment Dave Fleugal acting officer in charge by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

The officer in charge of Ridge Meadows RCMP is leaving the detachment after four and a half years at the helm. Supt. Dave Walsh is moving on to a role as a criminal operations program support officer at ‘E’ division headquarters. His departure was announced on the detachment’s website July 24. “I thank the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, as well as the mayor and council for all their support over my years as the RCMP detachment commander,” said Supt. Walsh. “It’s been a great experience and I look forward to my new

Dave Walsh is now a criminal operations program support officer at ‘E’ division headquarters. role.” Insp. Dave Fleugal will step into the role of acting officer in charge until a new command-

er is named. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin was not surprised by Walsh’s departure, saying most

commanders rotate out of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows after four or five years. “That’s the reality.” The new commander will be picked by RCMP headquarters, but both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will be allowed input. “We have had input in the past, so I don’t think that would change,” Daykin added. Walsh took charge of Ridge Meadows RCMP in 2009, replacing Insp. Jim Wakely, who passed away from cancer that year. The municipalities would prefer a new commander who is familiar with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and has spent time policing the area. Daykin doesn’t foresee any drastic changes once a new officer takes charge. “I’m happy with the level of service the RCMP provides us,” he said.

The Great Dane, George, went back into the house shortly after they escaped, but eventually ran back out. “We think he may have ran back in to round up the cat,” said Georgelin, who has yet to find Susie, the family’s 14-year-old Calico cat. Firefighters believe the cat escaped. Neighbours have spotted her, with distinct half black, half white face, in the area. Georgelin is thankful her second daughter Elizabeth was not home when the arsonist hit, since her bedroom is on the ground floor. “She might have not got out,” Georgelin said with relief. The family lost everything in the fire. Georgelin works as a clerk for the District of Maple Ridge and rents the house from the municipality. She managed to salvage some jewelry from the charred remains. Elizabeth, who teaches music, managed to find her guitars, but her

fire trucks focused on protecting neighbouring properties as soon as they arrived. Spence said it was too late to try and save the Georgelins’ home. “There is nothing left,” said Spence. “A total loss of contents. It was a harrowing experience for the two occupants.” Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating the fire and have already deemed it suspicious. “This very easily could have been a horrific tragedy, and possible loss of life,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Police and fire investigators are working around the clock to determine the cause, and find the persons responsible for this fire.” Monday morning, a car was torched near 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway, an incident that has also been classified as an arson. Investigators say it is too early to determine if a string of deliberately set fires lit in the neighbourhood three months ago are linked.

In April, two old vacant houses on Lougheed Hwy., some patio furniture on Cliff Avenue and a shed on Dunbar St. went up in smoke in the span of a night. The shed was adjacent to the Georgelin’s home. That fire spread from the shed to bushes and destroyed the home’s back deck. “I heard the same sound when that house got hit a few months ago,” said Georgelin, referring to the pop that woke her up early Saturday. • Anyone with information on the fire or anyone witnessed suspicious people in the area of Dewdney Trunk Road, Dunbar Street, or Nokai Park on Saturday, Aug. 3 around 2:45 a.m. is asked to call Corporal Clay Copeland at 604-467-7602.

The Hartnells of Hammond Cedar I n 1914, Richard Hartnell and his son Doan, two lumbermen from Michigan, took over a bankrupt and abandoned sawmill in Port Hammond during a financial depression and made it the largest red cedar mill in the British Empire. Under their management, from 1914 until 1946, the Hammond Cedar mill provided work and prosperity to the community. Today the mill, now the world’s largest western red cedar manufacturer, is still an integral part of the community. Born in England, Richard Hartnell came to Canada in 1871 with his parents and siblings at the age of 13. There were 10 children in the family. After eight years in Ontario, the entire family, including Richard and his Canadian-born wife, Eleanor, moved to Michigan. That is where Doan Maroni Hartnell, their son, was born, in 1881. Around that time, Richard and one of his brothers started running a lumber mill. When brick making began in Clayburn in 1905, Richard and two of his brothers moved from Michigan to British Columbia and started the Maple Grove Lumber Mill south of the brick plant. The following year, Doan joined his father and uncles as bookkeeper of the mill. The Maple Grove Lumber Mill provided slab-wood for the kilns, ties for the rail tracks and building material for the brick plant and the houses in the new village. In 1912, the mill

Should Hammond Stadium be renamed Hartnell Stadium in his honour? burned down and was not revived, because the timber resources in the area were almost depleted and the brick plant started burning coal instead of wood for the production of highergrade types of` bricks. Now the Hartnells turned their attention to Port Hammond. The first mention of a sawmill at Port Hammond is found in the Fraser Valley Record of 1908. The newspaper reports that the mill of the Port Hammond Lumber Company produced mainly lumber for the “immediate vicinity.” This mill was located “about three fourths of a mile back of Hammond.” In November 1908, J.A. Bailey, at that time the owner of the mill, reportedly exchanged the old machinery for machinery “of a different type.” He also moved the plant to a site along the Fraser River. It was all for nothing. One year later, his creditors moved in and

he was forced to sell. In 1911, George Boulton resurrected the mill. Keeping the name Port Hammond Lumber Company, he purchased some new machinery and started operating a fir sawmill. As Bailey before him, Boulton had great plans for the future of the mill. But in November 1912, Messrs. Heaps, supplier of the machinery, closed down the company for payment of a debt. This time the mill stayed closed for even a longer time, since, in 1913, a general financial depression put a halt to Vancouver’s building boom of the preceding years. In April 1914, Richard and Doan Hartnell took possession of the mill. Their first priority was adding a shingle mill, taking advantage of a healthy demand for red cedar shingles in the United States. They also put the sawmill back into working condition and used it mainly to fill contracts for spruce needed in Washington State for the building of airplanes. In that way, the mill managed to survive the lean war years. There was even enough work to hire “strong husky girls” to work in the plant when able workmen were scarce because of the war – a first in Canada.

At the end of the war, the city directories show the names of two companies in Port Hammond: the Hartnell Lumber Co. and the Hammond Cedar Company. The name Hartnell Lumber Co. disappeared after Richard returned to Michigan for good around 1918, selling his interest in the Port Hammond mill to the partners of the Westminster Mill Co. Ltd. of New Westminster. The mill continued operating under the name Hammond Cedar Company. One of the partners of Westminster Mill, Carl Judson Culter, originally from Texas, managed the sales and finances of Hammond Cedar, while Doan Hartnell took care of the operations in Port Hammond. There was sufficient capital to entirely rebuild the plant and to make it exclusively a cedar mill. The factory had spread to a surface of some 10 acres. Also, the work force grew from about 100 in 1922 to 250 in 1924. Thanks to Richard Hartnell and his son Doan M. Hartnell, the lumber industry had become and would remain the leading feature of Port Hammond. Fred Braches is a local historian who lives in Whonnock.

Hiker rescued off Golden Ears mtn. by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

A Maple Ridge woman injured while hiking Golden Ears mountain Sunday was rescued by helicopter. The woman had climbed to the summit with a group of friends and was coming back down when she took a tumble on a snowfield just after 5 p.m. A helicopter chartered from Talon Helicopters flew Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue volunteers to help the injured hiker off the peak. The chopper landed at the Panorama Ridge shelter. “While coming down, many hikers leave the trail and will boot ski down the snow field,” said search and rescue manager Rick Laing. “She got a little bit out of control while coming down and whacked her elbow.”

A Talon helicopter took Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue volunteers Panorama Ridge to rescue the woman. The woman dislocated her elbow during the tumble and Laing said the hikers did the right thing by calling for a rescue. “It would have been a painful

hike for her. There are areas of the trail where you need both hands,” he added. “We walked her into the helicopter and flew her back down.”

of summer camps

Photos by Tim Fitzgerald Rowan Grout works on a painting as part of her four-day summer camp geared towards learning the style of famous artist Gustav Klimt at 4Cats Art Studio in Maple Ridge.

Rowan mixes her paint before adding flowers as part of her work paying homage to Klimt, an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement.

Rowan carefully places the finishing touches on her clay sculpture.

Maple Ridge’s Julien Benek kicks up some dirt while practicing to improve on his fourth-place finish in the 50-cc division at last year’s TransCan National Motocross Championships in Walton, Ont.

Benek leaves the competition in the dust by T i m Fitzg e r ald contributor

W

ith his hand revving the throttle, nine-year-old Julien Benek patiently waits for his father Oliver to open the gate on their farm, allowing pent-up energy inside both the young rider and the 65 cc KTM dirt bike to be released. An overnight rain has made the small track on their twoplus-acre property a little slick. But with a few laps under his belt, Julien starts increasing the speed. Corners come faster as large chunks of mud are chewed up and spit out at a quickening pace. Then it’s on to hitting jumps, as lap after lap he pushes himself to find the perfect line. If practice makes perfect, Julien should have a long career in motocross. It’s all he known. His dad, an avid motocross racer, modified an old plastic three-wheel ATV bike when he just learned to walk. Whether he was rip-

ping through the living room or barreling down the small hills on their property, Julien got what would be considered a ridiculously early start. Then, the day before he turned two, a friend brought over a small dirt bike. Oliver decided to let his young son take a quick ride up a hill. Despite a slight crash into a blackberry bush, the boy was hooked. Now, as Julien prepares for his second crack at the 22nd Annual Parts Canada TransCan National Motocross Championship in Walton, Ont. from Aug. 14 to 18, he says he can think of only one thing better than riding. “Winning,” he laughs. “That’s what I love most about it.” There’s been no shortage of that. His house is a shrine to his trophies, most of which are almost as tall as him. Whether it’s his back-to-back first place finishes at the 2012 and 2013 Western Canadian Amateur Nationals or lapping the field at the race track in Mission,

Tim Fitzgerald/The newS

Julien Benek shows off his trophy from his win in the 50 cc class at the Western Canadian Amateur Nationals. Julien has quickly established himself as an up-and-comer in the sport of motocross. Oliver attributes much of his son’s success to the fact that he’s a quick study. He said his son can pick a line in two short laps, regardless if he’s raced on the track or not. Technically, he says that’s where Julien pulls away from his competition. He says it’s not just being the fasted rider on the track.

“Sometimes I kind of want Julien to have that style. But then as he goes around and picks away at the track, he’s calculating the corners, he’s calculating the jumps. He’s kind of picking the pieces slowly, and it frustrates me,” says Oliver. “I think can’t you just go out there and hold the throttle open and blast through everything But Julien’s dad ultimately

sees the wisdom in his son’s approach. “Definitely he’s a technical rider. He think’s he’s the fast guy, but he’s the technical guy, picking the smart lines. He’s not attacking the track until he know’s it.” Julien and his father hope to take their technical skills and show them off at the TransCan National Motocross Championships. Last year Julien was the only rider in his 50 cc class that represented B.C. “He really didn’t have a lot of competition here,” notes Oliver on his decision to travel to Walton for the national championships. “If you’re basically lapping the field, we had to go see what the East has to offer.” While he was pleased with his fourth place finish, he’s confident he can win this year. Oliver said last year’s winner was a nine-year-old from New York state who towered over the competition. “He basically muscled all the kids off the track,” Oliver recalls. “Now you’ll be nine and you can be the big kid on the

track.” Julien agrees. “It’s my turn to smoke them,” the nine-year-old laughs. While they are confident of their chances, they know nothing in sports is guaranteed. One bad corner can be the difference from first to fifth. Oliver also says just competing at an event so far away provides its own challenges. Last year the family loaded up the RV and head out on the road for the 50plus hour drive to Ontario. The taxing trip certainly took its toll on their stamina. This year they decided to fly to the event. The trip was made easier when the company BigSteelBox offered to ship the four members of Team B.C.’s bikes to the event. Oliver feels the added rest should benefit them come race day. “If you want to race their you have to be determined. I know he has the speed and technical skills, so it will be worth it so see where he stacks up to the rest of the country.”

Kwon goes wire-to-wire to Canadian Junior title contributed

Maple Ridge’s Kevin Kwon went wire-to-wire to take home the 2013 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at the Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury, Ont. Kwon, a member of Team Canada’s developmental team, fired a three-underpar 69 in the final round to win his second national junior title, his first coming in an 11-stroke victory in 2011. Kwon finished with an overall 12-under-par, winning by five strokes over runner-up and Team Canada teammate Matthew Scobie of Ajax, Ont. “It feels great,” Kwon said following his victory. “I was really nervous today, but I tried to do the same thing I did the past few days and I found a way to win.” The Swan-E-Set golfer opened the tournament with an eight-under 64 and never looked back. “When you shoot 64, it means everything is really working well for you,” said Kwon. “I hit the ball in the right places, I putted fantastic and didn’t make many mistakes, so it was kind of like I was in cruise control.

Patrick Eugster/Golf Canada

Kevin Kwon fired a final round 69 at Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury, Ont. to capture his second Canadian Junior National title. I think I’m a smarter golfer than I was last year and I think that’s going to help me a lot this year.”

The only hiccup for Kwon was a two-over 74 on Day 2. He said the gusty conditions made for a difficult round.

Still the field couldn’t catch Kwon. Consecutive 69s on the final two days secured the title for the Maple Ridge

golfer, who will be starting his freshman season at the University of Washington in the fall.

“There was a lot of pressure with this being my third and final Canadian Junior,” Kwon continued. “The first one I had zero expectations, but with this one there were more expectations because I wanted to end my career well – two different kinds of happy.” Kwon was cruising to victory on Friday with a fivestroke lead before posting a pair of bogeys on the par four Nos. 15 and 16. However, Kwon responded in true championship form with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. Kwon lead the tournament with 22 birdies. The Canadian Junior Boys Championship dates back to 1938, and saw 156 golfers play in a four-day, 72-hole stroke play event. The field was cut to the low 70 players after 36 holes. The win earns Kwon an exemption into the 2013 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, Aug. 6 to 9 at Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria, B.C. The winner of the Canadian Men’s Amateur receives an automatic berth in next year’s Canadian Open.

Team avenges opening game loss to Richmond with decisive win The Maple Ridge Burrards of the B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League are provincial champions after thouroughly routing the Richmond Roadrunners 12-6 in the gold-medal game Monday at Planet Ice. The Burrards exacted some retribution for their only loss in round robin play, when they dropped the opening game Friday 9-8 to the Roadrunners Friday night. Doug McQuarrie, head coach of the team, said the opening game loss was exactly the motivation his team needed to win the title. “I’ve never been a fan of going undeafeted in round robin play and making it straight to the finals,” said McQuarrie. “I feel you need that adversity to motivate the team. We knew we had to win the rest of our games and we’ve thrived all season in these tyopes of situations.” The Burrards and Roadrunners, were joined by the Victoria Shamrocks and the Coquitlam Adanacs at Planet Ice for the provincial crown. After the opening loss, the Burrads bounced back with a 14-10 win over the Shamrocks on Saturday and a 13-9 decision over the Adanacs on Sunday to set up the rematch with Richmond. McQuarrie said a complete team effort, led by Connor David in net, made all the difference in the final. The Burrards only gave up two goals in the final 40 minutes of the game, sealing the victory. McQuarrie said his coach-

Tim Fitzgerald/The newS

Burrards forward Riley Glemnitz makes his way around Richmond Roadrunner’s defender Nick Jensen during Friday night’s 9-8 loss. ing staff had emphasized conditioning all season and it was evident in their wins against Coquitlam on Sunday and Richmond in the final. “We came out flying in the second period and they couldn’t handle the pressure. They just crumbled,” said the head coach. He said his team also fed off the packed house for Monday’s final. “There wasn’t an empty seat in the

house. The energy in there was absolutely incredible,” said McQuarrie. David, who led the league with the top save percentage at 84.15, was named MVP of the tournament and top goalie at the provincials. He joined teammates Brett Kujala and Jesse Gillespie on the leagues’ all-star team. Kyle Heiling was the provincial’s leading scorer and was named gold medal game MVP.
