Military called in to lake for mortar mission A military dive team was called to Kalamalka Lake Tuesday after the discovery of a possible unexploded military mortar shell. A local resident was on a SeaDoo on Kal Lake at about 2 p.m. Monday, approximately 100-feet offshore from Cosens Bay, when he discovered what he thought was a mortar shell in about 20 feet of water. The resident called Vernon RCMP. “Our officers contacted one of the local military police officers who all attended in the area by boat,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

“The location has been recorded by the military and they will send an ordinance team out of Esquimalt later today (Tuesday) to determine if it is a mortar and deal with it.” The resident described the object in the water to police as about four inches round with fins on top, and was partially buried in sand. The North Okanagan has a history of unexploded ordinances being discovered by residents, mainly in the Commonage and Coldstream as the Vernon Army Camp was used a training facility in the Second World War. “The Coldstream area was a test range so they anticipate some (mortars) are still in there,” said Molendyk.

“The area was used during the war as a training ground. There are various areas within our community where they have found ordinances. Some areas are posted.” A piece of land on Okanagan College where a new track facility is to be built was recently swept for ordinances and given a clean bill of health. Molendyk said anybody from the public who finds what they think is a mortar should call police right away. “Do exactly what the individual in this case did,” he said. “Call us. In summer, we have the military camp operating, they have military police and we call them. They deal with the majority of it.”

Fire threat heats up with forecast Thunderstorms sparked 78 wildfires throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre over the weekend, but only four spot-sized fires in the Vernon area. The four lightning-caused fires, which are all extinguished, were: north of Sugar Lake, near Vigue Creek (in the Monashees), at Hidden Lake and near the Hartnell Forest Service Road. Relative humidity throughout the district has helped crews contain the fires, but there is concern with the hot forecast this week (30 to 32 through Monday with no precipitation).

“We’re returning to those hot and dry temperatures, which for us is concerning because of all the lightning we’ve had,” said Michaela Swan, fire information officer. Lightning can spark fires which can hold over underground, in the roots and other sources, for up to three weeks. Along with air patrols, the fire centre relies on reporting to help identify fires in the region. “The number of phone reports received from the public allowed us to respond to these fires fast and efficiently, and we thank all those that took the time to notify us of fire starts,” said Swan. With the threat of lightning-caused

fires popping up, the campfire ban will remain in effect to ensure resources are allocated to naturally-occurring wildfires. “At this point we will not be rescinding the campfire bans,” said Swan. Despite a few campers not getting the message, most campers have also been respectful of the ban over the long weekend. “The fire wardens were reporting very high compliance,” said Swan, noting that many people are using propane-fueled fires while outdoors. A Shuswap man has thrown his hat in the ring for the top executive posting with the B.C. Conservative party. Tom Birch of Salmon Arm has announced he’ll seek the presidency at the party’s annual general meeting next month in Vernon. “I believe that British Columbia needs the voice of the B.C. Conservative Party now more than ever,” said Birch. “Having considered how I might most effectively Tom Birch serve my party and my province, I believe that I could do that best as president.” Birch, project manager for a Vancouverbased forestry software company, ran under the Conservative banner in May’s provincial election in the Shuswap riding. Birch placed third behind Greg Kyllo (Liberals) and Steve Gunner (NDP). “We have begun already to prepare for the next election,” said Birch. “This coming year, we will be setting the pace and direction. There are great things ahead for us and for British Columbia.” The annual general meeting is slated for Sept. 13 and 14 at the Best Western Plus Vernon Lodge. The party is in need of a new leader after John Cummins stepped down following the provincial election.

hours and 19 minutes. “All in all, the event went very well,” said Johnson. Next year’s awareness swim is set for Thursday, July 31, and organizers believe it will be a multi-team event to continue raising water safety awareness for North Okanagan rivers and lakes.

Gaming grants lift local groups Morning Star Staff

Four local organizations that keep residents active and healthy will benefit from $84,500 in Community Gaming Grants. Cross Country BC in Vernon is gaining $50,000 for its Coaching Development, Provincial Team, and Training Centre Programs. Enderby curlers, of all abilities, will benefit from a $17,500 grant for the Enderby & District Curling Club. “This local organization is helping people of all ages and abilities enjoy the sport of curling,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo. “I’d like to thank the staff and volunteers who are doing so much to keep our community active and engaged.” Vernon’s Okanagan Extreme Lacrosse League will boost its Senior Mens’ Lacrosse program with

The Summer Swim Club in Lumby is also gaining $7,000. “These grants will help these local groups continue to offer programs that develop our local athletes, sports enthusiasts and coaches,” said Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster. “The grants also acknowledge the tireless work of staff and volunteers, who are helping to keep our community healthy and vibrant.” Community Gaming Grants allow non-profit organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues. Last fiscal year, in 2012/13, our government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services. Enderby looks at one-way street Morning Star Staff

Enderby council wants to hear from the public on a proposed one-way street system. Council will consider implementing a oneway street system for Belvedere Street, running north from Cliff Avenue to Mill Avenue. The proposed one-way street would involve eliminating the south-bound traffic lane of Belvedere Street between Cliff Avenue and Mill Avenue. There will be no change to the traffic pattern on Belvedere Street north of its intersection with Mill Avenue. The proposed traffic pattern change is the

result of safety concerns at the intersection of Cliff Avenue and Belvedere Street for motorists attempting to gain access onto Cliff Avenue. It is anticipated that a one-way street system would improve vehicle access onto Belvedere Street from Cliff Avenue. Residents and businesses will be provided an opportunity to voice their comments and concerns at the regularly scheduled Aug. 12 council meeting. Written submissions will be accepted before the meeting and read out before council. All written submissions must indicate the name and address of the author.

Crews contain attic fire Jennifer Smith Morning Star Staff

Fire crews managed to contain an electrical fire, sparked in a south Vernon home, to the attic Sunday. Vernon Fire Rescue was called to the home, in the 2300 block of 34A Street, at noon Sunday. “It appeared to be a bit of an electrical fire in the attic of the house,” said deputy chief Jack Blair.

Despite sawdust insulation in the attic of the older home, crews contained damage to the area. Crews were also called to report of an electrical fire near Dairy Queen Sunday afternoon. The caller reported hearing a ‘pop’ and saw flames on the Hydro pole at the transformer. “There was no visible damage and no visible fire when we arrived,” said Blair.

Traffic keeps police busy roger knox Morning Star Staff

Speeders, impaired drivers, seatbelt infractions, heavy traffic volume. It put the long in long weekend for local RCMP traffic officers. “The North Okanagan traffic members were out keeping the highways safe on the long weekend,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “At one time officers reported traffic was backed up on Hospital Hill (32nd Street) to the top at 15th Avenue from the lights at 25th, and right through 32nd Street to 48th Avenue.” On Monday, three members were working the highways and impounded five vehicles for excessive speeding. The vehicles were stopped south of town on Highway 97 and the speeds recorded were 157-, 141-, 138-, 138- and 136-km/hour in a 90 zone. Two of the vehicles were from out of province and were heading home after the long weekend. “One vehicle was a rental unit so this will likely cost the driver even more before the vehicle is returned,” said Molendyk. On Friday at 3:30 p.m., a northbound traffic member recorded one speed reading of 132km/h in the 90 zone by Bailey Road. Due to heavy traffic and a concrete divider, the member was not able to turn around and stop the vehicle. The member radioed the other officers working south of him and gave the vehicle description to his partner who he knew was operating a laser set for speed by Crystal Waters Road. “The traffic member got a second speed reading on the vehicle of 138 in the 90 zone,” said Molendyk, adding the vehicle was from out of province and was impounded as a result of the driver’s actions. One of the traffic checks that bothered one of the officers this weekend was a vehicle he stopped on Monday. There were five children as passengers, four of them were of the age and size that they required car seats. The four children were not in a child seat and two of them were sharing one regular seatbelt. The driver was charged for the seat belt offenses and proper transport was arranged for the children. Overall, for the holiday long weekend, there were seven vehicles impounded for excessive speed. Officers wrote 117 speeding tickets, 20 seatbelt infractions and two tickets for drivers using their

A member of the public called in a possible impaired driver on Highway 97 coming from the Falkland area. A traffic services member located the vehicle by Westside Road. The driver was checked and found to be impaired. A 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP} was given and the vehicle impounded for 30 days. Later that evening, another traffic member issued a 90-day IRP to an impaired driver that claimed they had just come from a local bar. The vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

Success beyond high school

ou go to your high school reunion and all those people you thought were going to be successful ended up being losers and all those who you thought were losers ended up being successful. Why does that happen? It happens because success isn’t related to being popular in Grade 12, being involved in sports or having parents who have money. Success beyond high school is much more than that. It tends to come Jane Muskens down to finding something that drives you to work hard - regardless of what it is or what it pays. You can be successful if your life is fulfilling no matter what the state of your bank account is. This is why you see people who come from rich countries to work for next to nothing in South and Central America, South East Asia and Africa helping the less advantage. This is where you see doctors, nurses, engineers and teachers leave Canada to find more fulfilling work in very poor and often violent nations. When you meet these people it doesn’t take you long to realize that your first-world problems don’t hold a candle to the things they encounter on a daily basis. Maybe that’s why those who don’t seem nearly as concerned about the daily issues we face in Canada aren’t that interested in accumulating things such as real estate, vehicles and having money in the bank. They probably don’t even have the time

or effort to attend their high school reunion, you just hear about them through other friends. So what does this have to do with education and getting a job? It means when someone tells me “I don’t know what to do - I want to go back to school I just don’t know what to take,” I usually begin with a number of questions asking them what drives them, are there things they enjoy doing and what would be their dream job. Most people have a hard time answering these questions, but given time to think about them they usually start to look at careers and work in a much different way. A good example of this is someone who did well academically in high school, loved to draw and enjoyed wood working in shop class. A student like this would be pushed away from the trades or even art school and told to go to university – and ultimately, in many cases, into a job which has them sitting in an office eight hours a day. Chances are this would probably be the worst choice for this person who needs some kind of creative work and pushing paper and staring at a computer screen isn’t going to cut it. This is why you meet so many people who don’t always enjoy their work and wish they did something else. Long before you have kids and a mortgage is when you have the luxury to make the best career/work choices you can. If you make the right decision, chances are you won’t regret it 20 years later. Living in one of the most beautiful places to be in the summer, it’s no wonder so many people flock to the Okanagan. The abundance of sun and surf, not to mention the plethora of recreational opportunities, makes this a tourist town. From the southern wine country up to the lakeside cities and on, each area has a unique draw. Unfortunately, the cities aren’t always equipped with bypasses to direct motorists out of the busy downtown areas. Therefore bottle necks occur on a regular basis. While it makes great business sense for tourists who can quickly pull off into a service station or shopping mall, it can create some significant challenges on the roads. Those of us who live here year-round sometimes forget that the summer months are some of the hardest to get around town. Like the winter, we should be giving ourselves a little extra time to get to and from places. Slow down and drive safe, because you won’t get there any faster if you get in an accident or get pulled over the RCMP. But even more importantly, make sure you’re equipped with extra patience on the roads. It may be frustrating fighting traffic on your daily commute, but keep in mind that all those visiting our beautiful area are also contributing to our local economy. The long weekend may be over, but summer is still in full swing. And with the week’s forecast you can bet there will still be a swell of visitors in town, soaking up all we have to offer. So keep your road rage in check, offer a kind wave or smile to the nice motorist who lets you in line and do unto others as you would want done unto you.

Reconsider Smart Meter policy

ear Bill Bennett, MLA: I am one of the 60,000 B.C. residents and Canadian citizens that has expressed my right to not have an information transmitting device installed on my home. You have stated that “the remainder of B.C. Hydro customers has agreed to have a Smart Meter installed on their property.” This is an outlandish overstatement. I would like for you to present documentation that proves that every person that presently has had a transmitting device installed did so willingly. I am positive not one person in British Columbia was ever asked if they agreed to have one installed. I live in a gated community of 300 homes owned and occupied by seniors. There are several of us that have refused the “Smart Meter.” Many others were blindsided by having a transmitting device covertly installed without notification or permission. I ask if you have personally read up on any of the research done both pro and con with regards to these meters? You are being told they are harmless by your friends and political hacks. They are deceiving you. All you have to do is read the latest word from the World Health Organization which has agreed, "wireless radio systems, memorial bench Monday – July 29: I like to think that most people are good at heart and most will do the right things in most circumstances. Recently, however, my faith in human goodness was shaken to the core when a peaceful setting met with a costly and thoughtless act of theft. We lost our daughter to cancer a couple of years ago - far too soon. She had been married for just three years to a wonderful man who was at her side every day. One of the last decisions they made together was that he would dedicate a bench to her memory in a spot that was special to them. This is easier said than done and our son-in-law embarked on a long involved process of learning who to ask for permission, what locations could be considered and which could not, what type of bench is permitted and on and on.......... After considerable searching, a couple of let-downs and learning just how much ‘red tape’ exists in even the smallest venture, he was given permission to have a bench placed in Sovereign Park adjacent to Mackie House. This meant the world to all of us as Mackie

including smart meters, cell phones, Wi-Fi routers and a host of other wireless microwave consumer products, all of which emit toxic EMR (electromagnetic radiation) which the World Health Organization (WHO) now classifies a "Class 2B" carcinogen, (i.e. a possible cause of cancer.)" I also ask if you are aware of the European countries and U.S. states and many cities that are reconsidering the use of these transmitters. Your governments supposed change of policy is apparently the next step in the bullying process. You are trying to convince us through

financial threats and penalties to accept these devices. I feel I am being held hostage and must pay a monthly fee for the same services that I have been receiving for 50 years. By my calculations this means $20 times 60,000 equals $1,200,000 per month or $14,400,000 per year. We will be paying these same meter readers who already exist and have existed since the first meter was installed, and they will only read the meter every two months or six times per year just like they do now. My old meter will last 50+ years (it is now 20 years old) vs. only five years for a

This was a substantial piece of granite and had been secured by a method thought to be more than sufficient. It would have taken a preconceived plan and team of people to budge – let alone steal it from its resting place. To those responsible you may have

acquired a lovely bench to adorn a garden somewhere – without its sudden appearance raising any eyebrows, but if you read this, you will now know that what you took from all of us was much more than a piece of stone. We have already lost a daughter and now we have lost a final tribute to her memory as well. While I still believe that most people are good and kind – I guess there are exceptions. Tuesday – July 30, 2013: The bench has been located, dismantled and hidden in the surrounding bushes. It would appear that in realizing how heavy it was, those responsible worked hard to dislodge it from its moorings and planned to transport it out of the park later. My son in law has re-installed the bench once more (although we are still waiting for the plaque) and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the memorial to our daughter will stay where it belongs and that many people will be able to enjoy it in the future. Disappointed in the vandalism but grateful for the recovery. The family of christy maygard (Sedge)

Smart Meter which is the life time as stated by your Corix (Hydro) representative. My present meter costs $50 vs. $500 and according to your estimate will cost $100 to $200 to service. I ask you what is going to be the cost to BC Hydro (us) to repair and replace the “transmitter.” Will the cost be the same as the present cost, one billion dollars, and who will end up paying for this? The sad and unconscionable part is that this will go on for the foreseeable future. In essence the 60,000 holdouts are saving Hydro $30,000,000 at $500 per transmitter. Perhaps you should reconsider and credit us with the savings instead of penalizing us for standing up for our right of choice. Are you kidding? Is this what the Liberal Party interprets as saving us money? This thinking is worse than the fast ferries auction. For a system that your government said would save us money you have already changed the goal posts and have publicly stated, “that we will be paying more”. It is government policies like yours that give politics a bad name. Jim mellors

Art history’s masters meet Lake Country in lecture series Submitted to The Morning Star

For every exhibit at the Lake Country Art Gallery, gallery manager Petrina McNeill and curator Katie Brennan develop public programming to engage the community. Last month Queen’s University student Peter Green lectured on art history’s greats and their relation to the work on display at the gallery. A highlight for many, Green’s lecture quickly sparked discussion at the event. In his lecture The Self Portrait as Therapy, Green insightfully wove a course throughout art history’s masters tracing the evolution of self portraiture. “Artists like Rembrandt, Frida Kahlo and Picasso immediately became relevant to the work we had in the gallery,” said Brennan. In wake of his first lecture’s success, McNeill has slated Green to speak three Saturdays this August in a lecture series entitled Art History’s Masters Meet Lake Country.

“If you were here for his talk on self portraiture, you know you won’t want to miss these next talks,” said McNeill. “For anyone else, I highly recommend that you catch his August lectures.” Green’s first lecture Pride, Propaganda & Rebellion: The Evolution of Public Art, will take place Saturday. It will trace Michelangelo’s David (originally outside Florence’s seat of civic government) through to the infamous political street graffiti of England’s Banksy. A number of district officials are expected in attendance. On Aug. 17, Green will present Forces of Nature: Landscapes, Natural Disasters & the Rebirth of Springtime in Art as the gallery’s current exhibition From the Soot & Ashes observes the 10th anniversary of Kelowna’s devastating 2003 forest fires. Green is expected to speak to Japanese prints like the iconic Great Wave of Kanagawa and their influence on Van Gogh’s landscapes. Art nouveau, Alphonse Mucha and

Canadians Ed Burtynsky and the Group of Seven will also be highlights in his lecture. In his final lecture Dutch Masters & the Ceaseless Golden Age, Aug. 24, Green will speak about his time living and studying in the Netherlands. He will delve into the likes of Hieronymus Bosch, Vermeer and Rembrandt, linking them to the modern masters Van Gogh and Mondrian. His lecture will also feature Dutch works currently on display at the Vancouver Art Gallery. All lectures will be held Saturdays at 3 p.m. at the Lake Country Art Gallery. Highly anticipated, the gallery expects to open its doors to a number of newcomers. Open to the public, admission to all lectures will be free of charge. The Planza makes plans to play the North Okanagan this week Morning Star Staff

An organically grown rock band from Vancouver, The Planza is in the North Okanagan Friday and Saturday. The band is rooted in the blues with a natural love for funky riffs. “The band plays everything from the heart; originals and other peoples’ music,” said bassist Joni Miller. Born on stage at Vancouver’s Libra Room,

a live music venue that puts on shows seven nights a week, The Planza have gone on to record a soon-to-be released album Planza: Greatest Hits. Craig Anthony fronts the band with his soulful voice and smokin’ guitar. He studied music and recording at Queens’ University. In his spare time, he manages a restaurant. Bruno Hubert, drummer and percussionist, is best known as a jazz pianist. He

just returned from a tour of Eastern Canada with Brad Turner, playing places such as the Montreal Jazz Festival for 40,000 people. Besides drumming for The Planza, Hubert heads a jazz trio, is the artistic director at the Libra Room, and the star of Bruno’s Blues, a mocumentary released in 2011. Miller holds down the bottom end on five-string bass. For a decade, she worked with the

late Vince Eastman as a principal in the MillerEastman band, which spent five years in the Okanagan after breaking down outside of Grindrod in 2005. This time Miller joins The Planza back in Grindrod to play the Riverfront Pub Friday. The band also plays Lorenzo’s Café in Ashton Creek, east of Enderby, Saturday. Make it a movie night by moonlight Morning Star Staff

Interior Savings and its community partners are inviting the public to grab a picnic blanket and head down to their local park to watch a moonlight screening of a family-friendly movie this month. Eight movie nights will take place throughout the Thompson-Okanagan, including a screening of Madagascar 3 at Vernon’s Polson Park Aug. 18 to benefit the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club. The movies will be shown on a giant inflatable cinema screen at sundown. Everyone is encouraged to arrive early to get a good viewing spot and take part in some of the many family-friendly pre-show activities. “The Interior Savings Moonlight

Movie Night events have been going for six years now, and are always a lot of fun,” said Kathy Conway, Interior Savings’ CEO. “To date, these events have raised more than $70,000 in support of important youth programs in our communities. Please join us for a wonderful night of family entertainment in your community.” While there is no charge to attend the event, a donation of $3 per person or $10 for a family of four is suggested. All funds raised will benefit a local nonprofit organization in each community. Pre-show activities will start at 7 p.m. with the movie scheduled to start at sundown. Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs. Warm clothing is also recommended.

Someone to listen in a confidential, non-judgmental place can go a long way towards sorting out life’s challenges. The Family Resource Centre Community Support Volunteer Program trains volunteers to offer free, shortterm counseling on life issues. The volunteers, who are of all ages and backgrounds, have one thing in common — they want to use their natural ability to be good listeners to help others. “I admit I was interested in the program for personal reasons at first because my family and friends tend to come to me for support and I thought I could use these resources to help them as well,” said volunteer Gloria Dupont, who took the training last year and has been seeing clients. “The training was more indepth than I thought it would be but everything was so wellpresented and so interesting. I learned that being a good listener isn’t enough, you have to actually hear what is being said and what is not being said. I learned how to help people find their own path in their situations.” The training includes personal growth, communication skills, empathetic listening and

There was a lot of bonding in

the class and we helped each other find the best in each other. I liked the wide range of ages of the people in the class,” said Dupont. When the volunteers start seeing clients on their own, they have access to profession-

al counsellors on working with issues with the clients. “We have a mentoring program and people coming to the counsellors with complex issues are pre-screened and will see one of the centre’s professional counsellors,” said Karen Swales, Community Support Volunteer Program coordinator. Dupont said the training left her feeling well-prepared to see clients. “We meet with clients at the centre at a time that is convenient for both of us and it’s a comfortable atmosphere. You realize how much courage it takes for a client to come in and be willing to work in problem solving,” she said. “To me, it’s just helping one person at a time and there’s a lot of satisfaction in that. nother month went by and it seems that all I did was water the garden. I am picking beans, all the lettuce is gone and somehow I haven’t seeded more. I should do this next week hoping that August is not as hot as July. I harvested all the garlic and onions and I only have one batch of potatoes left growing. My fig tree (in a pot) produced 13 fruits this year. On July 26, my dad would have been 100 years old. Jocelyne Sewell We celebrated this centennial by having my family coming west instead of me going to Quebec. Two of my nieces were here at the end of May and last weekend, we had a nice reunion at our house. We could not be together all at once, but by the end of September, only two nieces will be missing. One of my sisters and husband came by car and my only brother made it on his motor bike all the way from Quebec City and is now on his way back home. One more visit in September and I can testify to a fantastic reunion that extended over the summer.

My sister was so happy to be able to get fresh herbs from the garden. She had a chance of picking fresh raspberries, blueberries and other small fruits. I cut a big bouquet of flowers and chose the main ones as rudbeckia because of my father’s fondness for the shades of these flowers. These are amazing cut flowers that last for days. Even on the same plants, there are many colour variations. As I was picking tomatoes, I noticed a few with rot bottom. These tomatoes have a condition called blossom-end-rot (BER). This is caused by either a lack of calcium in the soil or the plant’s inability to draw calcium from the soil due to stress. Inconsistent watering can also cause it, which is very common when growing in containers. The tomatoes are still edible as long as the BER did not spread above the top half of the tomatoes. During drier conditions, the plants have a more difficult time absorbing nutrients. Since calcium is normally low in content in most home gardens, the first few tomatoes will experience this problem. The good news is that it does not spread to other tomatoes and will normally correct itself after a few weeks.

Even better news is that you can prevent the problem by using corrective measures in early spring. Epsom salts, composed primarily of magnesium sulfate, have been proven to help prevent BER. Simply mix one or two tablespoons of epsom salts to the soil when planting. Once the plant begins flowering, apply 1 tbsp. epsom salts to one gallon of water and spray liberally on the plants. Then mulch the plants with three inches, or about seven cm, of straw or dried grass clippings to help retain moisture and keep down weeds. This should be sufficient enough to prevent this problem in the future. One other trick for established tomatoes is to crush a few Tums and carefully work them into the soil around the plants. Tums contain calcium and will sometimes serve as a quick solution to BER, but I have not tried that yet. Amend your soil every spring by adding ample quantities of compost, shredded leaves, aged manure and peat moss. These organic supplements increase the fertility of the soil and provide a steady supply of nutrients to the plants throughout the growing season. For more information: 250-558-4556.

t’s been a tough last 10 days preparing for the inevitable good-byes to a wonderful mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend and I haven’t had time to think about much else, save feeding the hungry mobs of wonderful relatives and family arriving to share in our celebration of a life well-lived. And so with that in mind, I offer a couple of recipes Mom would enjoy. Apple Strudel 6 cups sliced apples, tart 3/4 cup raisins Rind of one lemon, grated 3/4 cup sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 cup almonds, ground 8 ounces phyllo pastry, 1/2 box, thawed (also called Filo Pastry) 1 3/4 cups butter, melted (no margarine)

1 cup breadcrumbs, finely crushed Mix apples with raisins, lemon rind, sugar, cinnamon, and almonds; set aside. Place 1 phyllo leaf on a kitchen towel and brush with melted butter. Place a second leaf on top and brush with butter again. Repeat until 5 leaves have been used, using about 1/2 cup of butter. Cook and stir bread crumbs with 1/4 cup of butter until lightly browned. Sprinkle 3/4 cup crumbs on the layered phyllo leaves.

Mound 1/2 of the filling in a 3-inch strip along the narrow end of the phyllo, leaving a 2-inch border. Lift towel, using it to roll leaves over apples, jelly roll fashion. Brush top of the strudel with butter and sprinkle with 2 tbsp. crumbs. Repeat the entire procedure for the second strudel. Bake the strudels at 400 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes, until browned. NOTE: Frozen phyllo leaves for strudel can be found at most supermarkets in the frozen foods sections. red CAbbAge 3/4 - 1 kg / 1.6 - 2.2 lbs. red cabbage 40 g /1.4 oz. butter or olive oil 1 tablespoon sugar 1 medium onion 2 - 3 tart apples, peeled and cut into small cubes

4 tbsp. red wine vinegar Salt 1 cup red wine 3 - 4 cloves 2 - 3 bay leaves 1 tbsp. flour 2 tbsp. blueberry or red currant jam (optional) Wash the red cabbage, remove trunk and cut into fine strips. Brown the sugar in the butter until light brown in colour. Add the finely chopped onion and apples. Sauté for a few minutes. Add the red cabbage and mix everything to combine. Immediately pour a little of the red wine vinegar on the cabbage so it retains the red colour. Season with salt, add a little red wine, bay leaves, cloves and steam, covered, on medium heat until cabbage is tender, about 45 - 60 minutes. At the end, dust cabbage with

After 39 years, the renowned Kimberley Accordion Festival was cancelled in December. But accordion players who enjoyed the camaraderie there still wanted to get together, so Nyla Hirsch, leader of the Vernon Accordion Club, and her husband John organized a casual get together at the Enderby Riverside RV campground in July. “Accordion players are great,” said Nyla Hirsch. “When you ask them to spread the word they get right to it. As a result, the Accordion Get-together held July 8 to 11 in Enderby had a bigger turn-out than expected. “It was planned as laid back but it should have been more structured for the public because there were crowds of spectators.” George Jaegli of Leduc, Alta. became the official camp cryer with a wake-up call of accordion music as he strolled through the park every morning. No ‘showdown’ with teachers Tom FleTcher Black Press

The B.C. government is pressing ahead with its goal of a 10-year agreement with B.C. teachers, appointing a “public administrator” to replace school trustees on the board of their provincial bargaining agency. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the change is temporary, and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will continue to play an important role in talks with teachers and Fassbender support staff. BCPSEA will be under the direction of Michael Marchbank, CEO of the Hospital Employers’ Association, when talks with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation resume in September. Fassbender’s announcement surprised school trustees around the province. He said he spoke to or left messages for trustees on the BCPSEA executive before making the announcement in Vancouver last Wednesday. The move is to meet a demand of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to bargain directly with the B.C. government, Fassbender said. The government also intends to eliminate essential services rules that keep schools open with minimum staff during strikes. Fassbender denied the suggestion he is setting up a “showdown” with teachers that would shut down schools and turn the public against unions. The structural change is needed to achieve the stability for students and parents promised by Premier Christy Clark, he said. “It’s not about pitting them against us,” Fassbender said. “It’s about finding a new road map where we can achieve that goal.” A two-year contract extension and wage

The province is opening the lines of communication so British Columbians can speak up about the future of digital services and the tools that deliver them, including the BC Services Card. This fall, government will undertake a provincewide citizen consultation process to gain a better understanding of British Columbians’ priorities, expectations and vision for the future delivery of government services digitally, with a specific focus on how the BC Services Card may be used as a key tool to enable this vision. The first step in the engagement process is the recent presentation to the public of a white paper entitled “Designing the Digital Service Consultation.” The white paper outlines government’s proposed consultation plan - which includes plans for a BC Services Card user panel, a broad public consultation and a specialist forum. Government will seek public feedback on the plan itself. This feedback will then be used to help finalize the consultation process, which is scheduled to take place beginning this fall. The white paper contains a detailed description of the proposed approach to this consultation, as well as information on how to submit feedback and can be found online at: http:// www.gov.bc.ca/digitalservices

Stars bounce Brandt’s Morning Star Staff

It was a game of two completely different halves with the Vernon Liquor Store Stars rallying for a 6-4 win over Brandt’s Creek Monday night at Parkinson 16 Field in Kelowna. The Stars got two goals each from Dave Hawes and Phil McNally as they improved to 7-6-2, moving one point back of sixthplace Rutland Spirit in the Capri Insurance Men’s 45+ Soccer League. Brandt’s Creek (2-10-3) went up 4-0 in the opening 20 minutes with Blair Gautschi scoring a pair, and singles coming from Kelvin Brown and Dave Hughes. Following a red card to Vinnie Jones of Brandt’s for a dangerous high kick to Dennis Berg’s face at 35 minutes, the Stars began their comeback. Brandt’s enjoyed a 4-2 lead at the break, but the Stars erased the deficit with 15 minutes to play. Barry McKay and John Matejka supplied singles for the Stars, who gave the Sleeman’s Man of the Match to Hawes at central midfield. Hawes buried a 25-yard corker top cheese for his first goal. Big O Tire/Turn-Key Ogopogos brushed back the RPM Automotive Rutland Spirit 4-2 at Marshall Field #1. Roland Reidstra buried a beautiful pass from Ruben Cerventes for the Ogopogos’ opening goal in the first half. Big O (5-8) controlled the majority of play with short passes and got their second goal from Cerventes after a feed from Volker Otto. Cerventes beat several defenders before converting from 10 yards. Otto registered the third goal, a 25-yarder that was punched into the top corner, while John Garner capped the scoring by nut-megging the keeper late in the game. Rutland dipped to 7-5-3. Dave Short scored with 30 seconds remaining as the Pushor Mitchell Advocates gained a 4-4 tie with winless Bosman Accounting at Marshall #3. Defender Greg Thalheimer, the Harries Construction Man of the Match, Laurent Dansereau, Kerry Correia and Gerry Geelkerken scored for Bosman, who led 4-2 with 14 minutes remaining. Thalheimer raced upfield and outhustled a defender for Bosman’s first goal. Dansereau rushed in and belted in the rebound of a Gerson Betman penalty shot which was stopped by a diving Advocate keeper Paul Hart. Correia took a nifty feed from Ian

In a high-intensity clash between the league’s heavyweights, Brown Benefits bounced the North Country Appraisals Kickers 3-1 at Parkinson 9. Brown’s forward Tony Gonzales was in top form as he converted two breakaway chances in the first 25 minutes, turning the North Country defence inside out and slotting the ball coolly into alternate corners on each shot. North Country keeper David Gadd was left grasping at thin air on both occasions. Just before the intermission, North Country clawed one back as Will Kruiper rose to meet a Matt Cherrille corner and put a bullet header past a helpless Brown’s keeper Steven Heiss.

After the break, both teams took turns pouring on the pressure with North Country’s Greg Bevandick coming close with a header off the post, and Gadd then keeping out numerous shots. North Country kept pushing hard to get back into the game, forcing a number of good saves from Heiss. Brown’s added the clincher at 75 minutes when left fullback Cam Bakala sent over a precision cross that was met by Steve Nader with a crafty tap in. North Country fought hard to get back into it but Brown’s defence of Dante Zanatta, Grant Campbell, Rich Woodhouse, Bakala and Colin Burton closed the door and limited North Country (10-3-1) to long-range efforts in the last 10 minutes. Brown’s engine room of Jim Kruiper and Donny Brown both played key roles in the centre of the park as 14-0 Brown’s faced their toughest opponent of the year, adding North Country have really gelled as a team.

The Vernon Source For Sports Tigers had high expectations heading into the B.C. Junior B Lacrosse Championships last weekend in Burnaby. The Okanagan champions left Bill Copeland Arena disappointed after going 0-4 in the four-team tourney, which ended with a 13-9 loss to the West Coast champion Delta Islanders in Sunday’s bronzemedal game. “It was a tough pill to swallow,” said Tigers’ head coach Myles Brumpton. “We definitely didn’t expect to go 0-4. “In a small, tight tournament, these guys played four games in less than 48 hours. Anything can happen.” Brumpton said penalty troubles played a big part in Vernon’s result. The Cats averaged nearly 30 minutes in penalties per game, five more than the next nearest team. “We were in the box for half of every single game,” he said. “You’re not going to win games when you do that. “We definitely had some commendable performances from our captain Brett Hanna, Bayne Bosquet and Darrell Landels for their work on the shortman. They logged a lot of minutes and were tremendous for us.” Liam Drabiuk counted three goals and two assists to lead Vernon’s offence in the bronze-medal tilt. Mason Limb (2), Hanna, Craig Bigsby, Nolan Frame and Ryan Sarazin rounded out the attack in front of Joel Fruncillo (31 saves). Vernon finished the round-robin with a 11-9 loss to the host Burnaby Lakers. Limb (3+1), Jordan Orr (2+1), Sarazin (2), Frame (1+2), Quinton Harrish, Hanna and Braden Barr handled the offence. Aaron Jensen recorded 33 saves. In their lone Saturday game, Drabiuk and Sarazin potted singles as the Tigers fell 13-2 to Delta. Despite going winless, Brumpton said the boys maintained a positive attitude throughout the weekend. “There was no fracture in our team. The guys had a great time. Each game they came in fresh and came out working hard. The chemistry these guys had is unbelievable. “In the periods where we had some flow established, we were in the thick of it. 5-on-5 we matched up well with all the teams.” The Tigers’ Guts and Glory Award was shared by Bosquet, who played the entire weekend on a fractured foot, and Frame, who was hospitalized after taking a spear to the throat in Vernon’s third game. He came back to play in the final game. Frame, Bigsby, Theo Wagner and Matt Kolb are the Tigers’ graduating players. The Island champion Saanich Tigers outlasted the Lakers 12-10 in the gold-medal game.

Paddlers cruise for Kin Morning Star Staff

The Vernon Paddling Centre is welcoming more than 200 athletes this weekend as it hosts the National Iron Outrigger Championships at Kin Beach. The two-day competition starts Saturday morning with the OC-6 (six-person outriggers) races for women, novice and junior racers leaving the beach at 9:30. The men and mixed crews will hit the waves at 1 p.m. Vernon is the only club that starts the race Le Mans-style, meaning teams start on the beach and then run down to their boats. The juniors and novices will complete one lap of the 12-kilometre loop, while the women, men and mixed do two laps. The route takes the teams from Kin Beach to Adventure Bay Point where they turn a buoy and head over to the east shores of Okanagan Lake. The teams then turn again and head back to Kin Beach. Spectators can watch the race from Kin Beach as the teams come around for their second lap. A total of 35 teams from all over B.C. and Alberta will be competing for CORA Cup (Canadian Outrigger Racing Association) points. The cup will

be awarded to the club that has accumulated the most race points over the season. The women’s team from False Creek in Vancouver is favoured to win, but they will be challenged by crews from Kelowna and Calgary. Vernon’s mixed team will be looking to dethrone the defending champs from Penticton Racing Canoe Club. Vernon will also enter a men’s team which will be up against some very strong competition from False Creek and Kelowna. Sunday’s events, again from Kin Beach, will have 50-60 single and double outriggers, and surf skis competing in a 10-km race. Women and novice racers start at 9 a.m., followed by the men and mixed at 10:30. The Vernon Controllers and North Okanagan United battled to a scoreless draw in the extreme heat at the World Masters Games in Torino, Italy last weekend. Jenny Currie enjoyed a semi-breakaway in the opening minutes, but put her shot over the bar with keeper Dar Wiese beaten. Both teams traded chances in the first half, with NOU getting more chances in the second allowing keeper Michelle (Mickey) Embleton to shine. “Mickey stood tall, taking away a couple of sure goals even reaching back and taking one off the line,” said Controllers’ coach Doug Macdonald. The Controllers’ back line of Michele Wernicke, Brandie Hunter, Jody Pope and Val Percy were outstanding. A strong showing was turned in by midfielders Currie, Jodi Hawthorne, Angela Durfeld and Felicia O’Gorman with a stellar effort from Leslie Epp, Michelle Mercer, Krista Backer, Sherrie Kineshanko and Jacquie Nuyens up front. The Controllers toured

NOU, who has picked up a few players from around the globe, then bowed 2-0 to a Washington entry. “It was super hot, the hottest ever known to man,” said NOU Wendy Stevens. “Big defensive game. Kudos to Janet Townsend, Pat Neilson and Shelly Johnston. Sprinting in the heat: not so priceless. Dar Wiese was priceless as our keeper.” Neilson’s husband, John, is coaching a Calgary women’s volleyball team, full of former national teamers. Kokanee reach Canadian finals Morning Star Staff

A pair of Vernon Kokanee went up against Canada’s best at the Age Group National Swim Championships at Parc Jean Drapeau in Montreal. Competing in the 14-year-old girls division, Meredith Levorson reached two finals in eight events. She placed ninth in the 200-metre freestyle with a personal best (PB) two minutes, 10.49 seconds, and was ninth in the 100 free in 1:00.63. Levorson was 14th in the 400 free (PB 4:40.02), 15th in the 200 backstroke (2:31.03), 15th in the 50 free (28.60), 16th in the 400 IM (5:21.86), 22nd in the 100 back (PB 1:10.87) and 27th in the 50 back (33.95). Zac Benn made finals in two of his U13 boys events, placing fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:24.34, and fourth in the 50 fly in 28.48. Both results are 11-12 boys club records. Benn’s other results include 13th place in the 100 fly (1:09.02), 19th in the 400 IM (5:26.83) and 22nd in the 200 back (2:37.01). “To make finals for Meredith and Zac is very rewarding after working hard in the 2012-13 swimming season,” said Kokanee head coach Renate Terpstra. “Each week the swimmers train 16.5 hours in the water, and two hours on land.” Nationals drew 902 swimmers (ages 12 through 18) from 159 clubs. Terpstra swam a 2:18.71 to rank 39th in the 200 IM, and clocked a 59.12 to take 41st in the 100 fly.

The Vernon Canadians finished ninth in the B.C. Bantam A Baseball Championships in Aldergrove. The boys opened the 12-team tournament with an 11-5 loss to the Victoria Blue Jays and then lost 13-10 to Ridge Meadows and 4-0 to the all-girls Aldergrove Her-icanes. Nathan Nesbitt was on the mound for the C’s against the Canes for five strong innings, and was relieved by Arron Fairbairn who shut the Hericanes down. Fairbairn went 2-for-2 at the plate to earn the Player of the Game. Saturday morning, the C’s brushed back Vancouver Minor 10-4, with Jacob Soucy pitching the best game of his life, striking out eight and allowing one earned run for game MVP. On Saturday afternoon, the C’s fell 4-3 to pretournament favourite Cloverdale, with game MVP Tyler Wellman fanning 10 and allowing one earned run over six innings. Wellman left the game with a 3-2 lead going into the final inning. The 1-4 record was a disappointment for the C’s. Chris Wellman, Ken Liefke and Carl Vardon are proud to have coached the U15 boys, and greatly appreciate the hard work shown all summer. “Every practice, they put the sun down and had a very successful run in the summer season, winning silvers at the Valley of Champions and the Burnaby Summer Fun tourney,” said Wellman. Sebastian adds to skill set Kevin MitChell Sports Editor

Clean the dorms for an hour to start the morning. Clean the dojo for an hour. Group training begins at 11 a.m. and includes 300 push-ups and squats, 60 back extensions, and 50 crunches and leg raises. Takes 90 minutes. Then you wrestle, with short water breaks, for 90 minutes. It was all part of a three-month Japanese pro wrestling camp with Noah Wrestling, an outfit which scouted Kelowna’s Kyle Sebastian last October at the Harley Race Wrestling Camp in Missouri. “It took me three weeks to get into the groove and then I was able to do it pretty easily,” said Sebastian, 24, who fights his former tag team partner Adam Ryder in a main event of a Thrash Wrestling card Saturday night at the Schubert Centre. “Now that I’ve trained in Japan, fans will see a completely different wrestling style from me, more aggressive and hard-hitting with more innovative moves,” said Sebastian, who works fire protection by day. Originally from Lethbridge, where he was born Kyle Kristensen, the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder inherited interest in wrestling from his father, Jim. “He used to train at the Hart Dungeon,” Kyle told The Morning Star. “I can’t be sure of the years, but he did train for a while and then met my mom (Susan) and figured out love was more important.” Kyle was a young boy when he pulled off his first serious wrestling move. He told SLAM! Wrestling: “I remember one day when I was about nine, I was wrestling with my dad on the bed. I went up to the top of the dresser and gave a huge crossbody onto him. Then, I hit the headboard and busted myself open the hard way. I had to get six stitches. I felt pretty tough. And that’s when I fell in love with wrestling.” Sebastian trains nights and weekends and has plans to return to Japan permanently. “My goals is to do this full-time in Japan. I want to go as long as I can. I saw wrestlers in their 60s over there.”

Kyle Sebastian will showcase his expanding skill set as he battles in a thrash Wrestling card Saturday night at the Schubert Centre. While in Japan, Sebastian also fell in love with chanko stew, or sumo soup, as it’s called. “It was simply delicious. The young guys made it with five different flavours, including chicken and tofu.” Former WWE and Stampede Wrestling veteran referee Kevin Jefferies, of Kelowna, will work Saturday night’s card (8 p.m.). The other main event has Thrash Wrestling champion Black Dragon taking on Scotty Mac, who has held several wrestling championships in the Pacific Northwest. Jefferies is impressed by Sebastian. “Ever since I saw Kyle wrestle four years ago, I have been very high on this young man,” said Jefferies. “As myself and The Honky Tonk Man have said many times, if there is a young man from the British Columbia independent wrestling scene who has the best chance and potential to make it big time, it is Kyle Sebastian.” Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Bridge by Phillip Alder AUDITION THE AUCTION TO PLACE THE CARDS Lea Michele, an actress and singer, said, “I didn’t know I could sing until I auditioned for ‘Les Miserables.’ My friend was auditioning, and I wanted to audition too.” Many bridge players would find out that the game isn’t as hard as they thought if they spent longer auditioning every auction, asking themselves what each call means. In today’s deal, how should South plan the play in four spades? West leads the diamond ace, continues with the diamond king (East dropping the queen), and follows with the diamond jack. When North entered the auction following an opposing pre-empt, he assumed that his partner had six or seven

points. Here, South had slightly more than that, so jumped to three spades. It was borderline, but he was assured of at least an eightcard fit and had three working honors. Note also East’s play at trick one. If he had dropped the queen under his partner’s ace, that would have shown either a singleton or the queen and the jack. The bidding marks West with six diamonds and East with two. So if South ruffs the third diamond low in the dummy, surely East will overruff. And then declarer will also lose a club trick. Similarly, if South ruffs the third diamond high with dummy’s spade king, he will lose two diamonds, one spade and one club.

Instead, declarer should discard dummy’s automatic club loser. He wins the next trick (perhaps overruffing East if West perseveres with a fourth round of diamonds), draws trumps, and takes a safe club ruff in the dummy. His 10 tricks are five spades, two hearts, two clubs and the club ruff.

Norman Gustav Schulz

We regret to announce the death at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on March 11, 2013 of Norman G. Schulz at the age of 77 years. Norm was born and educated in Vernon and started a long career with the Government of BC in the Vernon Courthouse. Over the years Norm rose through the ranks and was the Government Agent in several northern B.C. communiƟes. He also served as a judge and as a coroner for many years, both in the north and in more recent years, here in Vernon. Norm loved hockey with a passion and was a fan, referee, coach and acƟve player most of his life. Norm was predeceased by his parents, brothers Dick and Eric, sister Erica, and son Norman Jr. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis; son Michael and granddaughter Dominique. He is survived by brother Hugh, sister Erma, and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family members. A private graveside commiƩal service was held with Pastor Zichard Schulz oĸciaƟng. At 4:30am on Thursday, August 1, 2013, exactly 50 years to the minute from the date and time of his dad’s passing, Jack Cole slipped peacefully from this life with his wife and children at his side. Jack believed in hard work, honesty and laughter, which was evident in the number of good friends he made throughout his life, but his priority was always his family. This sense of family commitment was a factor when Jack completed his electrical apprenticeship and joined the workforce. From 1969 to 1992 Jack worked with his brother Marv at Gateway Electric. After moving to Vernon, he started JC Electric with his son, Bob in 1992. They worked hard to make JC Electric the success it is today. Jack and June opened Westside Pro Hardware in 1997, which they ran together until it closed in 2011 when Jack retired at the age of 70. The hardware store was one of Jack’s great adventures. He had a true appreciation of his customers and was often heard saying how great they were. Jack was happiest spending time with his family boating, fishing, playing cards or enjoying some time at the casino. His kind, generous spirit showed in his ability to make everyone in his presence feel welcome and appreciated. Jack will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, June, his daughter Lorrie-Rae (Mike) Flynn and his son Bob (Nicky) Cole. Jack is further survived by his sister Dorothy Turick and his brother Jim (Sharman) Cole. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Jim and Annie Cole and his brothers, Norman and Marvin Cole. Prayers will be held on Friday, August 9, 2013 at 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11:30am, both at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home (4303 Pleasant Valley Road). Following the service, the Cole family invite Jack’s friends and family to join them for refreshments in the reception room. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation in Jack’s memory.

Your hearing care practitioner should, as part of your visit, explain what & how these results apply to your hearing. Speech testing, as a part of a hearing test, does a number of things. One, it verifies the pure tone testing. Two, it helps us to understand how a person understands speech. “MCL” is the level at which speech is “most comfortable level” This is the level at which speech is most comfortable (in most cases from 45 to 70 dB HL). “UCL” is the “uncomfortable level”. This is the level that speech becomes unbearable (in most cases from 85 to 110 dB HL). MCL and UCL are also used in the design of hearing aids to set volume and the maximum level of output a hearing aid will produce.

My crawlspace has exposed soil in it. Is that a problem and if it is, what should I do about it? Yes it is a problem. It depends on a few other things such as the type of soil, the location of the home, is it an area where there is a high water table or other ground water issues, or how well ventilated your crawlspace is. Sealing of the crawlspace floors is currently a requirement of the British Columbia Building Code. Even though the soil under the home can appear dry there is still a large amount of water vapor coming up through the soil & into your home. I have seen some crawlspaces in cold weather with enough moisture in the air that it was almost ready to rain in the crawlspace. The amount of damage that can be done can cost a fair amount to repair. The moisture in the air seeks out a cold spot to condensate on - this is usually the rim joist & floor joist ends of your floor system. These joists will rot and result in a big repair job. The moisture can also find its way up into the attic, condensating on the underside of the roof deck where it can grow mold. The moisture barrier will help reduce the amount of moisture entering the home from the ground & will also help to prevent radon gas from entering the home. Adding an approved moisture barrier to the basement or crawlspace to cover all exposed soils is a good plan & really not that costly.

I have heard chemicals in sunscreens aren’t good for you but I am concerned about keeping my skin healthy. What should I look for when choosing a sunscreen? There is no question that sunscreen is important. However there are increasing reports about the harmful chemicals in sunscreens and personal care products. In sunscreen, avoid oxobenzone, and retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A). Oxobenzone is a synthetic estrogen and hormone disruptor and data is showing that tumors and lesions develop sooner on skin coated with Vitamin A-laced creams. Vitamin A, listed as “retinyl palmitate” on ingredient labels, is in one-fourth of sunscreens on the market, and these sunscreens should be avoided. Instead, look for sunscreens containing zinc, titanium dioxide, avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. In addition, avoid sprays and powders that can get into the lungs and may be harmful if inhaled. Also avoid SPF above 50 because we tend to stay in the sun longer and reapply sunscreen less often when wearing it. High SPFs offer minimal added protection over SPF30. Instead look for sunscreens that come in cream form, are water resistant for beach, pool and exercise, and are SPF 30+. Be sure to apply sunscreen as directed. Make sure to apply it before going out into the sun, use enough of it as necessary, and reapply it as often as directed. Keep your cool. Avoid heatstroke.

You’ve been outside in the sun for hours and suddenly you’re not feeling well. You could be suffering from heatstroke. Usually, your body can get rid of excess heat by sweating. But sometimes it can’t – especially if you’re working or exercising in extreme heat or high humidity and haven’t drank enough fluids. Then heatstroke can be the sudden result. Heatstroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not treated immediately; That’s why it’s so important to recognize the signs. If you notice any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately: • hot, red, dry skin • headache • rapid pulse shallow breathing confusion Tips to avoid heatstroke: Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re working or exercising outdoors. Refrain from doing heavy outdoor activities during peak temperature periods. Avoid consuming anything that dehydrates the body, such as coffee and alcohol.

Will stretching before my workout help prevent injury?

It’s important to first clarify the difference between stretching and warming up. Stretching involves taking a pose (such as sitting and reaching for your toes) and holding that pose for 20-30 seconds or longer. In comparison, warming up is doing something dynamic like reaching for your toes 6 or 8 times in a fairly quick succession. Before a workout you’ll want to focus on warming up. All you’re trying to accomplish is to increase your body and muscle temperature to reduce injury, and to psychologically get ready for the workout. If you stretch before your workout, you will decrease the strength of your muscle by something like 5.5%. In addition, stretching also causes instability. So keep your stretching for after your workout!
