Derek Snelson will bring his jet-powered funny car to Thunder in the Valley this weekend for several runs down the runway at Alberni Valley Regional Airport. Except he hopes to keep his car safely grounded.

Away to the (drag) races! AUG. 10–11: | 13th annual Thunder in the Valley offers quarter-mile racing not seen on the Island. SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

The weather promises to be hot and the cars even hotter as the 13th annual Thunder in the Valley kicks off Friday, Aug. 9 with a show ‘n shine at Harbour Quay and culminates in two days of quarter-mile drag racing at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport. As happens every year, the racing classes filled quickly and there is a full slate, event spokesperson Darren Willis said. This year’s race features the largest contingent of doorslammers—about 25, Willis said. Raising the

prize money helped boost numbers in the popular category. Other classes of cars that run include street cars, mod, pro, super pro, doorslammers and bikes. They will run in that order, Willis said. This year’s feature car is Alaska-based Derek Snelson’s jet-powered funny car, Warhawk. “That’s likely going to be the fastest thing we’ve ever had run out there,” Willis said. The car can top out at 483 kilometres per hour (300 miles per hour), and Willis expects the thrustpowered car might reach 435 kph (270 mph) on the

quarter-mile strip. “With the jet car, because it’s all thrust he can run as fast as he normally does,” Willis said. Some of the past feature cars rely on traction, and with Thunder in the Valley only running once a year— and being used as an airport runway the rest of the time—there isn’t much traction on the track. Warhawk will run in the late morning on Saturday, after all the classes have run, then again in the late afternoon. Willis said he hopes Snelson will run a similar schedule on Sunday.

City escapes municipal computer hacking SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

The City of Port Alberni’s website has escaped a municipal software hacking that hit the District of Maple Ridge, City of Abbotsford, Oak

Bay, City of Victoria and others. City manager of information services Jeff Pelech said the issue was first discovered elsewhere in early July in land utilties software that many municipalities in B.C. use.

y! er

edy Deliv e p S

“There was a vulnerability found within a piece of software a lot of municipalities were using for [people paying] taxes and utilities,” Pelech said. “The website hacks have been quite a topic of conversation among

municipal IT techs.” Adobe started notifying people a couple of weeks ago about a possible breach and putting out patches for their product to correct the vulnerability.

time and the wrong place for the liquor store. He cited traffic concerns as there is no intersection for cars coming in from Cathedral Grove to safely turn into the proposed liquor store location. He also said the area does not have the population to sustain another liquor store, so the new store would be catering primarily to tourists. The proposed location is not far from the Westwind Beer and Wine Store. “Just look at that area, there are two churches and it’s on the wrong side of the road,” Danroth said, adding that there are enough liquor stores in Port Alberni, serving a small population. “It’s like having three Walmarts in Port Alberni. Is there a need for that? It’s saturated already.” ABC liquor store licence owner Andrew Hanson has asked the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District board to rezone the property at 2970 Alberni Highway, near Athol Road, from C4 highway commercial to C2 general commercial, to allow a liquor store. A blueberry stand is currently stationed outside the vacant building on the property, which also has a house and ninestall parking lot. The applicants are Jim and Darlene Lane, who run the private liquor store in Ucluelet. Hanson has also applied to sell his liquor store licence. Danroth added that the liquor control board does not allow the relocating of a liquor store within one kilometre to an existing one, so the province should not allow this relocation because he believes the new location is less than one kilometre from his store. According a Ministry of Justice spokesperson, a private liquor store can apply to relocate elsewhere within the same municipality, or up to five kilometres away in a different

– Chris Danroth municipality, as the crow flies (in a straight line as opposed to driving distance between two points). The spokesperson added that a liquor store is restricted from moving within one kilometre of another private liquor store unless the proposed location is the same as the existing site, the proposed location is not closer to an existing or proposed store than the current one, the travelling distance between and existing store and proposed stores is one kilometre or more because of a natural barrier or the relocation is occurring because of a fire or natural disaster that destroyed the store. The Alberni Valley News drove between the proposed site’s current parking lot to Westwind’s parking lot. The distance clocked on the odometer was 1.2 kilometres. Danroth also said he had met with the applicants before as they were interested in purchasing the Westwind, but he wasn’t interested in selling. “Their overall offer was close enough but I was not in the mood to sell it,” Danroth said. “It’s a family asset and I want to give it to the kids.” Danroth has owned the Westwind for almost 20 years. The ACRD is expected to make a decision in late August or early September after input from various stakeholders, such as the city, is received and a public hearing is held. Calls to Hanson were not returned by newspaper deadline.

QUADRA: | Port Alberni cadets learn new skills at Comox camp. COMOX – Daniel Cochrane returned home to Port Alberni last weekend after spending the past three weeks completing the Basic Drill and Ceremonial Course aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Quadra, Cadet Summer Training Centre. Daniel is an active member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in Port Alberni. He spent the past three weeks learning how to do various forms of marching drill, such as flag drill, fifle drill, and his favourite of course, the naval field gun drill. The naval field gun is more than 100 years old and was last used in service during the Boer War in Africa. “I loved it! I made friends from across Canada, it was all free, and I even got paid to go,” said an ecstatic Cochrane, who

Cougar sightings cause for caution B.C. aboriginal relationship still fragile Many communities on the west coast, and even here in Port Alberni have reported cougar sightings in the past few weeks. In Langley-Surrey, where cougar sightings are rare, residents are concerned, as they should be. But communities such as Parksville, where two dogs were attacked, or Port Alberni, where a cougar has been sighted near Maquinna Elementary School, should also be on guard. Cougars are quite capable of attacking animals and small children, and the areas the cougar was seen in both Langley and here are within a block of a dense urban area, where many families reside. Cougar sightings in Langley are rare, but not uncommon. Cougars have been spotted on numerous occasions in areas of South Langley for generations, and rural properties near the U.S.-Canada border seem to be a favourite haunt. Members of larger wildlife species, including bears and cougars, seem to have been on the move more in recent years. This is likely due to increased human encroachment on wild areas, making way for homes, schools, apartments and shopping centres. The wild animals which have inhabited those areas have to go somewhere else. It is not at all surprising, but when they come face to face with members of the human species, there can be conflicts. In the case of bears, it is often over food. Bears love rotting fruit, garbage and almost anything else. Cougars tend to be more selective, but in some ways that is even more problematic. They are voracious predators and tend to seek out smaller and weaker prey. That means small animals, deer and, in some cases, smaller people. People who live in the area near the latest sighting need to be cautious, and this applies particularly to children. Adults need to take extra care to supervise them at all times. — Langley Times, Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – The ceremonies have become common at the B.C. legislature. Government officials and aboriginal leaders gather to celebrate resource sharing agreements that allow economic development in areas that need employment but are hampered by a century of uncertainty and dispute over treaties, or lack thereof. This approach emerged a decade ago with forest agreements. The B.C. Liberal government bought back timber cutting licences from big forest firms and made them available for community forests and aboriginal communities who claimed the areas as their traditional territories. Recently the approach was extended to mining revenues and water licence fees paid by

private power developers. These are substantial steps forward for the only province in Canada in treaty limbo. A 2010 sharing deal worth more than $30 million in royalties for the Mount Milligan copper-gold mine north of Prince George helped the McLeod Lake Indian Band recover from the pine beetle and forestry slump that devastated its business base. After many years of struggle, Mount Milligan expects to go into production this year. Another agreement with Kamloops-area communities shared revenues from an expanded Afton mine. Perhaps the most ambitious agreement was concluded in March of this year when the government signed a deal with the Tahltan Nation for mining and hydroelectric development in remote

northwestern B.C. The deal clears the way for a major extension of the BC Hydro grid to power the Tahltan village of Iskut and also the Red Chris metal mine, opening up the region to other mining and hydro potential as well. To get that deal, the province put up $20 million last year to buy back Shell Canada’s coalbed gas leases in the Klappan region, headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers. Those leases had become a target of international protest. Even after these expensive concessions, it would be an error to conclude that all is well between the Tahltan and the province. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson questioned Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad on this point during the recent legislature session.

‘...all that goodwill could evaporate quickly if a coal mine ends up getting a permit.’

The Tahltan Central Council was pleased about shared decisionmaking on resource projects, until they found out that B.C. had handed the environmental assessment of a new openpit coal mine over to the federal government. The proposed mine is in the Klappan, known around the world as the Sacred Headwaters. Rustad said shared decision-making deals such as the Tahltan agreement do not cover activities of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Whether the review of that coal mine is federal, provincial or combined, it requires extensive consultation with affected parties. That’s great, but all that goodwill could evaporate quickly if a coal mine ends up getting a permit despite Tahltan objections. Rustad’s Nechako Lakes constituency is also a focal point for oil and gas pipeline proposals. Donaldson highlighted another problem.

Progress fragile From / A6

Last year the government signed a reconciliation agreement with the Gitanyow First Nation near Terrace, one of many communities struggling to get through the B.C. treaty negotiation process. That agreement included a joint land-use plan. Then the Environmental Assessment Office asked the Gitanyow for its input on proposed gas pipelines through its territory, to feed the government’s liquefied natural gas plans. Again, the joint land-use plan has no provision for

pipelines. The Gitanyow hereditary chiefs wrote to the B.C. government in July, threatening to go to court over the pipeline proposal and questioning the value of their hardwon reconciliation agreement. Resource revenue sharing agreements and shared landuse plans are well-intentioned and represent real progress. But these situations show how fragile they are. Mailbag: NDP takes a beating from letter writers this week We need good disaster plan To the Editor,

Two more notices of trouble to come hit west Vancouver Island in the past two weeks. The first occurred when a magnitude 5.1 quake rattled a region under the Pacific about 170 km west of Port Hardy. A few days later, a 5.5 quake at 6:20 a.m. woke many residents of Port Alice, Port McNeill and Port Hardy. The resulting tremors rattled windows but caused little damage. Quake seismologist John Cassidy said the area is one of the “seismic hotspots”. And if heavy tremors hit, people should “crawl under strong furniture for protection from falling objects”. If and when a tsunami came roaring up the Alberni inlet, the siren alarms would be sounded and radio station PEAK FM will broadcast directions to “high ground”. But one important detail is still fuzzy. A specific gathering location should be given where people would register for food and accommodation. Such as the Glenwood Sports Centre, the

Multiplex or other large buildings in the Echo/Fairgrounds area.

Harold Hamilton, Port Alberni (Editor’s note:

The parking lot at the AV Multiplex is designated a mustering or gathering area in the event of an emergency.)

No NDP rise in cement tax To the Editor,

Re: NDP soul search going nowhere (B.C. Views, July 31). Climate change is a reality, and bold political leadership is needed to address it. During the election campaign, New Democrats put forward a plan to expand the base of the carbon tax to include venting emissions from oil and gas operations, capturing an additional five per cent of carbon emissions in the province, but that plan didn’t include all industrial process emissions. We believe that government should work with the oil and gas sector to make sure companies pay their fair share for the emissions they produce. This is particularly important as the B.C.

Liberal government pursues an aggressive schedule of LNG expansion which, if realized, will make it nearly impossible for the government to reach our legal emission reduction requirements. New Democrats will hold the government to account for their green promises, and continue to advocate for policies that help reduce emissions and spur efficiency, innovation and best practices.

Spencer Chandra Herbert, New Democrat environment critic

Socialism not just a word To the Editor,

Re: NDP soul search going nowhere (B.C. Views, Aug. 1) A significant aspect of NDP post-election soul searching, following its catastrophic defeat by the forces of free enterprise, will no doubt have to be coming to terms with the need to move the party further to the centre, away from its ideological far leftwing base. While the federal NDP appears to have decided to delete references

to “socialism” from its guiding party preamble to make it more palatable politically and competitive electorally, merely removing socialism as a founding principle, without jettisoning its politically outdated doctrine, will not convince Canadians that the NDP is anything but a socialist party. Confronted with the political reality of the concept of socialism proving itself to be an abysmal failure throughout the world, being replaced by more free enterprise, less government and less social engineering, the question naturally arises as to whether B.C.’s NDP party will be able to “jump over its own ideological shadow” and abandon its traditional stand on the principles of democratic socialism. The party defines democratic socialism thusly in the B.C. provincial NDP constitutional preamble: “The New Democratic Party believes that social, economic and political progress in Canada can only be assured by the application of democratic socialist principles

to government and the administration of public affairs ... including, where necessary, the extension of the principle of social ownership.” Stripped of its defining political raison d’être, however, NDP soul searching to remain a legitimate electoral contender in the province would make it a journey of heading somewhere into the future without the benefit of a road map and without a clear sense of its destination ... always carrying the baggage of its political past.

E.W. Bopp, Tsawwassen

MLAs pull wool over our heads To the Editor,

NDP MLAs seem to just shoot from the hip without doing any research when speaking. For example, George Heyman, MLA, for Vancouver-Fairview (rumoured to be a replacement for Adrian Dix) makes statements in question period that are not backed by any research. Thank God the NDP did not form government.

‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ So often we get caught up the the busy-ness of life. I confess that even though I live a few hundred yards from the inlet, it can be more than a week in which I do not see the harbour or smell the cool fresh air. As I write I am sitting outside my church at a ‘lemonade stand’, offering free drink and conversation... and watching the world go by. This is such a wonderful world, God’s creation, in which we live and move and have our being!

n 1958 my older brother was delivering orders for a local pharmacy on an Italian Vespa motor scooter. At the time, I thought that Arthur’s Vespa was the most wonderful machine that I had ever seen and vowed that when I grew up I would have one of my own. As we well know, life often gets in the way of vows, and dreams are often put on the back burner to be chewed over later when there is time. Since those early days I have owned numerous Honda and BSA motorcycles, all of them lots of fun and very fast, but I have never owned a scooter or a Vespa, until now. Last month we took the ferry to Vancouver to look at three used Vespas for sale, one in

kilometres an hour downhill and as low as 80 kms going up hills. It was the most fun that I have had on two wheels. So by now you are asking yourself “why is he talking about Vespa scooters when this is supposed to be a photographic column”? The answer is freedom—freedom to travel anywhere on the Vespa Virgin (VV) with my camera slung across my chest looking for that photographic opportunity, the freedom to not worry about parking spaces or the price of fuel. The VV and I have travelled to Harbour Quay, Victoria Quay, around Sproat Lake, our local airport, the far end of Beaver Creek road, the far end of Cherry Creek road taking photographs. So far on my VV travels I have been using just one lens, the Sigma 10~20 mm fisheye lens (the lens is so wide that I have to step back so that my feet will not show) with incredible results. Playing with depth of field and using the ISO to get the proper aperture have resulted in excellent photographs. The photograph of the sea walk at Victoria Quay was taken with the extreme wide

Craft market grows CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

CHRISTOPHER SUN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Sunday Craft Market co-organizers Beth Larsen and Gwen Lowe show some of the items for sale at the weekly crafts market at Harbour Quay’s Spirit Square.

Travel light

The Sunday Craft Market at Harbour Quay’s Spirit Square is slowly becoming a destination of its own after branching out of the popular Saturday Farmer’s market three years ago. Craft market co-organizer Gwen Lowe said the market has seen a slow, but steady rise of shoppers over the years, but there are still many people who don’t know about it. “Like everything else, it just takes time,” Lowe said about increasing the market’s exposure. “The farmers’ market has been going on for [almost] 20 years and there are still people who come down who don’t realize that it’s open 12 months of the

OP E N I D N A NG R G

year.” The Sunday Craft Market attracts mostly local, homebased vendors selling crafts ranging from knitted items, ceramics, woodwork, glassware and art. Lowe said most of the items for sale at the market are unique and cannot be found in stores because they are homemade. “People should come down and enjoy the crafts and the

food down here,” Lowe said. “You can buy unique things here as gifts or for yourself and some of these knitted items, if you don’t see a colour you want, [the vendor] can make it a different colour.” Vendors from outside the Alberni Valley are also welcomed to set up a tent, offering variety to the market every week. “We don’t know

who’s going to show up until 9 a.m.,” said co-organizer Beth Larsen, adding the market charges $10 to vendors for a table. “We average about 20 vendors, but we don’t usually know because they just show up.” The Sunday market is held from May to the end of September every year. It is open between 10-3 p.m. every Sunday, rain or shine. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

lens set to the maximum width, 10mm, the ISO was 200, the aperture was f 13, the speed of the lens was 1/160 of a sec. Of course, I used a lens shade on the lens and the camera was hand-held. Good shot but I really wanted to use the Widelux film camera to shoot Port Alberni, and I will as soon as I can figure out how to transport a tripod on the Vespa without scratching the scooter. The Widelux uses 35mm film, has a 25mm wide angle lens that rotates, and uses two pieces of film to shoot creating a panorama scene. If you see me around town on my Vespa loaded down with photographic paraphernalia, wave. Any questions? E-mail me at nsilverstone@ telus.net or see me online at www. silverstonephotos. com. Thunder automates registration for racers

| UNIVERSITY TRANSFER

Something new this year that racers will appreciate is the event website: www.thunderav.com. “We’re going to be able to automate the registration process,” Willis said. Elaine (Mani) Blight has been handling the registrations by hand every year until 2013; now that the system will be automated, Bight is retiring as registrar. “The automated system will allow (racers) to know how many cars are registered in a class,” and racers will receive immediate confirmation of whether they are registered. (Registrations open in May and are always full by June. There is always a waiting iist, Willis said.) After 13 years of holding the drag racing event at the airport, the Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association finally completed its return road. The 10-foot-by-1,200foot road connects the end of the drag strip with the existing taxiway of the airport, and eliminates the need for racers to return via the dirt. “A lot of people stepped up and made big contributions for the return road,” Willis said. Those donating more than $2,000 to the road project included the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, Catalyst Paper, Bowerman Excavating and Holtzman Construction.

HandyDART rides down Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

HandyDART ridership was down four per cent, with revenues down three per cent in the Alberni-Clayoquot region last year, causing at least one regional director to wonder if the service

should be replaced with taxi service. BC Transit regional manager for Vancouver Island Myrna Moore told the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District board that the ridership decrease is equivalent to 700 less rides. That got Beaufort director Mike

Kokura wondering if changes need to be made. “If ridership is going down and cost is going up, wouldn’t it be better off to hire taxi rides for these people,” Kokura asked. “HandyDART is a fixed cost if one person is on it or not. A taxi would not

charge if it’s empty.” In 2012-2013, HandyDART operated 5,368 hours for the year, providing 18,155 rides. About 3.3 rides per hour. Moore said taxis are used to augment the HandyDART service, but it wouldn’t be a viable replacement as it would actually cost more if all HandyDART rides were replaced with taxis. She also wasn’t concerned with the slight drop, which mostly occurred in Port Alberni and Cherry Creek, because the numbers increased in Beaver Creek, Sproat Lake and Beaufort. Moore said HandyDART has been trying to increase ridership outside the city, but with no increase in service hours or number of buses, the rural increase is at the expense of the city. “In the city, we can do a trip within 15 minutes,” Moore said. “For someone in Sproat Lake, it takes longer.” Moore added that HandyDART ridership is expected to fluctuate as the primary users are the elderly and disabled. For the first three months of this year, she said ridership actually increased by five per cent from last year. The HandyDART service costs between $2 and $4.50 one way for a passenger and escort depending on the distance to be travelled, according to BC Transit’s Port Alberni website. The ACRD pays 33 per cent of the cost and BC Transit pays 67 per cent. Four HandyDART vehicles will be replaced, which has already been factored into the budget, Moore added. HandyDART provides door-to-door service to people with physical or cognitive disabilities. It operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no Saturday service. Diversified Transportation Limited has the contract to provide HandyDART service in the Alberni-Clayoquot region.

Coast Realty Group would like to thank our partners in the Coast Realty Home Makeover 2013. Without the generous support and help from Colyn's Landscaping and Benjamin Moore Alberni Color Corner the remarkable transformation would not have been possible.

The Rusty Anchor Inn, known as the Somass Hotel, has been sold to the Uchucklesaht First Nation.

Uchucklesaht buys Somass SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

The Uchucklesaht First Nation has purchased the Rusty Anchor Inn, formerly known as the Somass Hotel, in uptown Port Alberni. The sale finalized on July 31, said Scott Coulson, the Uchucklesaht First Nation’s chief administration officer and director of finance. “We’re going to be renovating the entire building,” he said. The Uchucklesaht plan to transform the building into their new administrative home and cultural centre; they are presently occupying a building on the Hupacasath Reserve on River Road. “Now that we’re treaty we don’t have to be on the reserve anymore,” Coulson said. The Uchucklesaht are one of five nations of the Maa-nulth Treaty. Chris Ashby of Appello Properties Inc. previously owned the Somass, and renamed it the Rusty Anchor Inn after purchasing it in 2006-07. In 2012 he renamed it Somass Station Inn and tried to make the restaurant and lounge more upscale. However, a fire in one of the hotel rooms upstairs forced Ashby to close parts of the establishment and fix the fire damage Ashby could not be reached for comment on the sale. “This is a very exciting time for the Uchucklesaht Tribe government as we move forward with economic development,” Chief

Charlie Cootes said in a statement. “After construction is complete this building will be home for our government and administration, will create a cultural home for our citizens and assist in creating employment and training opportunities for all of our people.” The current hotel is home to three bars and 42 apartments, many of them “uninhabitable,” Coulson said. The Uchucklesaht plans to reconfigure the rooms into 23 larger units. When the estimated $3 million project is complete, the building will also have government facilities, administration offices, boardrooms (some of which will be available for public rental) and retail space. The cultural centre will including a carving room and gallery at the back of the building, where a strip bar was located, Coulson said. The tribe will consider re-opening the restaurant, previously called Timbers, Coulson said. The new building might also provide a training facility for First Nation people, he added. Coulson said the tribe still has five months of engineering work ahead of them before they can even think of putting out tenders for the renovation work. He estimates the renovations won’t be complete for a year. editor@albernivalleynews.com

veryone has their own personal reasons for riding in the Tour de Rock. All three of the Saanich Police Department’s members have witnessed loved ones fight cancer, and all three have felt the pain of losing loved ones to the disease. For Const. Doug Franklin, he lost a grandfather, two aunts and an uncle on his mother’s side. For Const. Lisa Bruschetta, she lost a grandmother to complications from throat cancer. Her mother was also twice diagnosed with cancer – and beat it both times, and her close friend just recently completed treatment and is now in remission. And for civilian employee Kevin Nunn, a British expat, he lost his father to lung and liver cancer hours before he was to get on a flight back to England to be with his dad. “It’s affected everyone, directly or indirectly. Given the opportunity to make a difference monetarily or emotionally or physically, I had to jump at the chance,” Franklin said, explaining his motivation to ride. The Saanich bicycle patrol cop has three kids, and says meeting families going through the emotions that come with having a child with cancer has put his life into perspective. “I thank my lucky stars because

Saanich police officers Const. Doug Franklin, left, and Const. Lisa Bruschetta, joined by Saanich police quartermaster Kevin Nunn, are part of this year’s Tour de Rock squad. I’m not burdened by the demands of having to care for one of my kids – who are all thankfully healthy. This is my way to give back,” he said. Bruschetta, a mother of two, isn’t as lucky when it comes to the health of her children. Her eight-year-old son Dominic has neurofibromatosis, a disease that makes him susceptible to growing cancerous tumours under his skin or on his brain. She’s riding this year to give support to families and health care officials who have given her and her family the love and support they’ve needed.

“I want to give families the same level of support I’ve received. Being in hospitals, being in cancer clinics and seeing how well they’ve taken care of my loved ones, I believe it’s a mirror image of what the Canadian Cancer Society is doing for the children and families who benefit from Tour de Rock,” she said. Nunn, the equipment manager for Saanich police, holds a special place in his heart for Tour. For the past two years he’s held physically gruelling and financially successful fundraisers to benefit Tour de Rock. Being named to this year’s team

as a special guest rider has been lifechanging. Visiting Camp Goodtimes in July, the camp for kids who’ve been diagnosed with cancer, reaffirmed to him just how good a cause he’s fighting for. “Going to Camp Goodtimes and seeing children who are going through cancer who actually don’t realize it; they’ve forgotten that they are (going through cancer) because they’re having so much fun being a child,” he said. This year’s Tour de Rock team is made up of 22 police officers, media riders and special guests. The team will cycle nearly 1,100 kilometres from Port Alice to Victoria Sept. 21 to Oct. 4 raising money for pediatric cancer research and support programs like Camp Goodtimes. All three Saanich riders say their experiences up to this point in their lives – as parents, as police officers, as former military men (both Franklin and Nunn) – haven’t prepared them for the emotions they’ll feel on Tour. “I think that the riding is honestly going to be our easy part. I think meeting these children and families – their stories, that’s where we’re going to need to prepare ourselves,” Bruschetta said. “I’m a very emotional person, so that’s going to involve keeping my focus positive and giving out as many hugs as I can.” “I’m a strong person,” Nunn added. “I did 22 years of the British Forces, so I’ve seen a lot of trauma, a lot of pain throughout the world. But this is something different. This is about children. This is something special.” kslavin@saanichnews.com

Golf for Kuu-us society So you think you can golf. But have you ever done it at night? Kuu-us Crisis Line Society is holding its 17th annual Night Golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Hollies Executive Golf Course on Johnston Road. The event kicks off with a steak barbecue and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. courtesy of Quality Foods and

Circle Dairy, followed by nine holes of golf in a best ball format. This isn’t your regulation golf game, though. There will be wacky tee-off and putting contests before teams of six are sent out with their night golf accessories: glow-in-the-dark golf balls, necklaces and bracelets. The fairways will be decorated with glow

sticks so golfers are able to see where they and their golf balls are going. There are many prizes, including a hole-in-one for $10,000, sponsored by MacDermott’s Insurance. Tickets are $60 for both golf and dinner, or $25 for dinner only and are available at the Kuu-us office, 4589 Adelaide St.

Nominated by her sister Susan Cootes, Lewis’ house on Third Avenue near Montrose Street was treated to a fresh coat of paint, some minor exterior repairs and new landscaping. “It’s like they took the exterior of my house and yard, picked it up, took it away and put something beautiful there,” Lewis said. “It’s that big of a difference.” Lewis suffers from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes fluctuating muscle weakness. Carrier of the Week KYLE THOMSON

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Kyle has been delivering his 77 papers on his South Port route since November 2012 with no complaints! Kyle likes to hang out with friends and play video games. Kyle says he likes to deliver the Alberni Valley News because it is good exercise.

Along with our thanks, Kyle received a $10 gift card from Walmart!

Principles For Living

ONLY

29.95

Are you breaking any basic rules of health as you live your life? There are basic laws governing all of human life on planet Earth. For that reason, they’re called universal laws. Here are some examples: We need to breathe deeply on a daily basis. If we don’t, the parts of our lungs that aren’t aerated will be more susceptible to viral and bacterial invasion. The bugs move into the dormant parts of our lungs turning us into a mobile smorgasbord for themselves and their immediate family and friends. We need to drink fresh, clean water throughout the day. Not pop, not juice. Not tea or coffee. Water, just water. Enjoy whole foods that are as fresh as possible. Hopefully, your meat is free from chemicals, coloring and preservatives, your fruits and vegetables are as spray free as possible, your dairy intake agrees with your genetics and your wheat intake is refreshingly blended with whole grains such as brown rice, spelt, quinoa, amaranth, millet or kamut. One neglected but significant law includes the effects of gravity on our spine. Gravity constantly pushes us closer to both the ground and our grave over time. Without our continuous vigilance, gravity can age us quickly as our spines bow under the mass of our upper bodies and the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual weight we create for ourselves. So which rule is your favorite to break? I’m willing to bet you’ve heard about the importance of breathing fully, hydrating fully and eating well, but have you ever given thought to the fact your spine takes a roughly 18 hour postural beating to maintain an upright position? How is that rule going? Have you abused it? How important is it to you to have a spine that is still comfortable and user friendly to retire into? It’s your life, it’s your health, and it’s your spine. Take good care of it. Peace, Carl

Canada Post collects for food drive CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni’s main post office will hold a food drive beginning next week, with proceeds going towards the Salvation Army and Eighth Avenue School. Starting on Aug. 12, approximately 1,500 paper bags donated by Quality Foods will be delivered by Canada Post letter carriers to select areas in Port Alberni. Neighbourhoods that don’t receive the paper bag will get a flyer instead, asking for donations to be made to the Canada Post office at Pacific Rim Shopping Centre on Johnston Road. Canada Post letter carrier Colin Minions said he and a few other carriers got the idea to start this food drive from their counterparts in Parksville. “A few of us volunteered at the food drive in Parksville and thought it would be a good idea to do it here as well,” Minion said. 3/17/09 9:03: “Food banks go really dry in the summer.” No set goal has been set, but Canada Post letter carriers in Parksville collected about 5,000 lbs of food and $700 in cash when they held their food drive in June, Minions said. The Port Alberni food drive ends on Aug. 23 and all collected items will be delivered to the Salvation Army on Aug. 24.

vermiculite

July 11, 2013

Vermiculite is a silver-gold to gray-brown shiny mineral that was commonly used as insulation, especially in older homes. Some vermiculite insulation contains asbestos fibres that, when inhaled, can cause severe lung disease. To be safe, if you have vermiculite insulation, do not disturb it. Instead call a professional to determine whether asbestos is present and if so, have it removed. ProPacific Hazmat Services are experts in vermiculite assessment and removal.
