IT’S THE most delicious, laid-back, down-to-earth community celebration of the year, and it’s all happening in Cloverdale this Saturday, when the annual homage to the tasty and nutritious blueberry takes centre stage in the historic town centre. There will be a little something for everyone at the 10th annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival, the ultimate community event, blending an old-fashioned Show ’n Shine for cars, trucks , and motorcycles, along with live, retro music, plus blueberry pie-eating contests, homemade blueberry pie sales, and blueberry pancake breakfasts, along with free trolly rides, vendor markets and an arts Q Show ‘n Shine festival. “We have everything Q Pie-eating that moves and has contests wheels,” says organizer, Paul Orazietti, executive Q Food, fun and director of the Cloverdale free family Business Improvement entertainment Association. killed in a hit-and-run crash near the Surrey-Langley border early Wednesday morning. The victim of the fatal hit-andrun was a 37-year-old man, said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger. Police haven’t identified where he is from yet and still have to contact next of kin, he said. It was around 3 a.m. when a semi truck without a trailer travelling in Drew Grainger the eastbound curb lane in the 19500-block of Langley Bypass struck and killed the man. The investigation into Matias began in March, when gang task force officers seized a Glock 9-mm pistol, a semiautomatic KRISS rifle loaded with .45 calibre shells and an SKS rifle. “In the hands of criminals, the guns he is alleged to have trafficked are extremely dangerous and we want him in custody before he can sell more,” said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton last month. Matias’ next court date is Aug. 26.

Police seek home invasion suspect

ing for a man suspected in an interrupted home break-in last Wednesday (July 30). A man allegedly entered a house near 145 Street and 76 Avenue between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. He was confronted by a resident, from whom he demanded money and jewelry. After getting some money, he left and was last seen running on 76 Avenue. He is described as a black male in his early 20s, about 5’6” with a medium build. At the time, he was wearing red and white Adidas pants and a black hoodie. Police also believe an unknown woman who was walking along 76 Avenue at the time might have seen the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502.

Keep the cougar in front of you at all times. • Never run or turn your back on a cougar. Sudden movement may provoke an attack. • If a cougar shows interest or follows you, respond aggressively. Maintain eye contact with the cougar, show your teeth and make loud noise. Arm yourself with rocks or sticks as weapons. Crouch down as little as possible when bending down to pick up things off of the ground. • If a cougar attacks, fight back. Convince the cougar you are a threat and not prey. Use anything you can as a

weapon. Focus your attack on the cougar’s face and eyes. • Remain calm. The cougar was likely just passing through the neighbourhood and will hopefully move on. • Keep away from the cougar and tell others to do the same. • Bring children and pets inside until the cougar has left. • Determine if the cougar has been in the area for while. Are you aware of any pets disappearing in or missing from the neighbourhood? • Cougars will often prey on house cats that are allowed to roam freely. • The disappearance of household pets can be an indicator that a cougar is active in a residential area. • Phone the Call Centre

(1-800-663-9453) if you suspect that a cougar is hanging around in a residential neighbourhood or killing pets. • If the cougar becomes threatening or aggressive towards people phone the Call Centre. • Determine if the cougar has been attracted to the location or is in the locale as a result of household type attractants being present. • If any attractants are noted get information from the Ministry on how to eliminate or reduce the effect of the attractants. For example, a bird feed attracting squirrels (prey species). • Cougars are not to be fed. It is an offense under the Wildlife Act to feed dangerous wildlife.

Bose Farm last week, said Ron Sousae, one of the organizers behind the Save the Bose Forest group. The Aug. 1 protest along 64 Avenue in front of the 3.69-hectare property (located at 16420 64 Ave.) comes after Surrey council passed a third reading in early July permitting the developer to remove the trees to make way for a residential development. The developer submitted a revised plan this year that spares 122 of the trees and preserves heritage buildings on the site, but opponents want all 300-plus trees saved and say the development will put an additional burden on already overcrowded schools and congested streets.

THE SUN IS SHINING brightly and

it was the hottest July we have had in 60 years. Families are going to the beach, water parks, and out for ice cream to beat the heat – kids and the pooch in tow. It’s 5 p.m., time to think about dinner as we head home. “Just going to run into the store for five minutes.” It’s something we all do and don’t think twice about... except there is a dog in the party. Media has done its job by making the public aware of the dangers of leaving kids and pets in cars. It has not gone unnoticed. I take my children out of the car, tuck my four-pound Chihuahua in my daughter’s arms and head into the store as I’ve done countless times. I’m met with smiles. Then I encounter a problem. A store clerk tells me “no dogs.” I tell him I’m not leaving my dog in the car to cook. I’ll be done in five minutes and she’s not harming anyone and not on the ground. I get followed around like a criminal by this person, told over and over “no dogs.” By this time I’m angry and frustrated and walk out of the store as he calls for management saying I’m causing trouble. I decided to take the high road and leave as it was for the best to avoid confrontation. My dog is four pounds, silent, and harming absolutely no one in

TransLink is not for us Defend farmland

THE TRANSLINK message is finally getting through. TransLink does not benefit South-of-the-Fraser cities and municipalities, only those who live north of the Fraser River. We have to remember, then-GVRD chair and soon-to-be TransLink chair, former Vancouver councillor George Puil, only inked the TransLink deal when the province promised to pay two-thirds of SkyTrain construction, west of Commercial Drive in Vancouver. From the start, TransLink was only about Vancouver and how

everyone else must pay for Vancouver’s grand metro schemes. Fast forward to 2013: TransLink now hovers near bankruptcy, demanding massive new tax hikes and user fees to fund SkyTrain subway construction in Vancouver, not caring a wit about transit, nor transit customers, in Surrey, Delta, and Langley. A South Fraser transportation authority, made up of people directly elected to the board, would add some democracy and desperately needed fresh thinking, to the organization. A separate South

Fraser transit authority would add some muchneeded competition to transit planning and show the ossified central command at TransLink that there are cheaper and just as efficient ways in moving people. The time has come to talk about Surrey and the rest of the South Fraser municipalities leaving Vancouver’s sphere of influence and plan for transit that best benefits transit customers on our side of the Fraser. Surrey continues to grow at an astounding rate. Mayor Dianne Watts and the current council have a huge responsibility. They have done a yeoman’s service in park perpetuation and expansion. Many of our parks, especially Bear Creek Park, provide a wonderful sanctuary of recluse and beauty. At the same time, council has a heavy responsibility to perpetuate farm land. This land provides food, aesthetics and lungs. It’s very tempting to allow opportunists to convert these valuable assets into cash. And when need is great, deception follows. The land’s arability is not an issue. This land was purchased at a low price because it was classified as farm land. The taxes were commensurately low. Now the owners want windfall profits. Greed and hypocrisy can be understood, but should never be condoned. Council knows, as did its predecessors, that nature provided Surrey with generous assets of soil, trees, and water, and that we are simply its custodians. This legacy must be passed on. G.L. Zaklan

Summer a terrible time to gather public input WITH MANY residents away from

home for the summer, the planning of North Delta’s future goes on without their valued input. When I emailed the city asking to include all North Delta residents in the plan by adding another open house in September and postponing the close of the survey to the fall, the reply I received stated that because it was summer and many residents were away, the open houses were held in July only. The arrest of a 53-year-old man and the seizure of a BMW X1 in connection with the incident were announced by police on Dec. 6. A court date of May 13 had been mentioned, but further proceedings did not materialize. “The investigators are at the stage of formalizing the charges against the driver in collaboration with Crown counsel,” Paquet said. Paquet said that while the public is often surprised by how long it takes such cases to come to court, comparable delays are not uncommon “in the world we live in.” “It’s partly to ensure as thorough an investigation as possible, and partly just the process,” he said.

for the RCMP has been named as defendant in a civil suit alleging sexual harassment. The statement of claim against Insp. Tim Shields, the Attorney General of Canada, and the B.C. Minister of Justice was filed in B.C. Supreme Court last Thursday by Atoya Montague, identified as a civilian member of the RCMP’s B.C. communication services, who has been on medical leave since August 2011. Last week, the chief officer of her division termed the allegations “uncorroborated and unsubstantiated.” Montague’s statement of claim details specific complaints against Shields, who at one time was the Surrey detachment’s media relations officer, and subsequently in charge of the strategic communications unit, to whom Montague reported. She alleges Shields made several unwanted sexual advances to her starting with a trip they made to the B.C. Interior in 2003 to drop off supplies to wildfire victims; and that he had continued to make inappropriate, sexually harassing comments and send text messages to her throughout their work association. that Shields’ alleged actions were in a context of “persistent and ongoing” sexual harassment practised by male officers with whom her job called for her to be in contact. She also alleges systematic harassment from the RCMP on the terms of her employment, remuneration, promotions and subsequent issues of her deteriorating health, which she attributes partly to the conditions she experienced on the job. The harassment even extends to threats from RCMP health services to cut off her medical leave and pay, Montague alleges. None of the allegations have been proven in court. In the statement released last Thursday, Insp. Ed Boettcher acknowledged Montague’s allegations are serious. He said the RCMP had become aware of many of the allegations “through a third party” prior to the suit being filed and had launched an immediate investigation, however, repeated efforts to gather information directly from Montague had been unsuccessful. “Notwithstanding these efforts, Ms. Montague did not provide any information that would have allowed for a fulsome investigation of the allegations,” Boettcher said.

Car-jacking and crash by Sheila Reynolds ONE MAN was arrested

by Surrey RCMP Friday afternoon following a bizarre car-jacking incident that began and ended with a crash. Police said a 26-yearold man of no fixed address was driving a vehicle stolen in Langley Aug. 2 when he came across a car accident near Fraser Highway and 182 Street. In the process of trying to go around the accident, he tried to drive over a median. His vehicle, however, got hung up on the median and he wasn’t able to drive any further. RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said the man then approached the accident scene and tried to steal a couple of vehicles, before getting into a Mini Cooper that had stopped at the scene. The suspect drove off at an “erratic rate of speed,” and ended up getting involved in another collision near 80 Avenue and 176 Street. A passerby flagged down firefighters,who detained the driver until police arrived to arrest him. No one was injured, said Grainger. Police are recommending multiple theft and dangerous driving charges against the driver.

shooting that sent two men to hospital on Friday afternoon was targeted. Surrey RCMP were called to an area in the Panorama Ridge neighbourhood just before 3 p.m. Aug. 2 after a report that two vehicles had

exchanged gunfire. Shortly after, police heard from a local hospital that two men had been admitted with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Mounties were quickly able to link the victims in hospital with the shooting incident and said it has “all the earmarks” of a targeted shooting.

Witnesses described the two vehicles involved as a gold-coloured compact car and a darkcoloured sports car. Two men – a 19- and 21-year-old – underwent treatment. One was listed in critical condition, but is expected to survive. The second sustained less serious injuries and is expected to fully recover.

sessing stolen ID, and two weapons charges.Â Yaroslawsky was originally charged with almost 60 offences, but did not plead guilty to any of the multiple break-and-enter counts he faced, claiming he was a â&#x20AC;&#x153;fenceâ&#x20AC;? for the stolen property and was not involved in the break-ins. Gahunia detailed a long list of residences that experienced break-ins and which had items stolen that were later found in Yaroslawskyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possession. These objects included cameras, computers, iPods, TVs and other electronics; car and house keys; jewelry; cash; prescription drugs; and various forms of ID, including passports, Care Cards, social insurance cards, and credit cards. One of the break-ins involved a Fido store in Surrey in which two men stole $500 cash, cellphones and SIM cards. Three guns were also pilfered in two separate thefts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one from a vehicle and the other from a home. In several of the break-ins, the suspects urinated on the floors and furniture. Gahunia asked the judge, in reaching a sentencing decision, to consider that Yaroslawsky has a criminal history dating back to 1995 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when he was 13 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and has 46 prior convictions for crimes such as assault, break and enter, and drug possession and trafficking. He was on probation at the time of his arrest in Langley.Â The defenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s submission and the judgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision on sentencing have not yet been made. The matter is next scheduled for Nov. 1.

profit organization benefiting widows and orphans in Zimbabwe are filling and sending a 40-foot shipping container with muchneeded items to Africa. The Zimbabwe Gecko Society – founded in 2008 by South Surrey couple Susan and Frank Janetti – aims to have the shipping container arrive in Zimbabwe by mid-January 2014. The large blue container will be filled with art supplies, baking utensils, clothes, medication and many other desperately needed supplies. Once emptied, the container will then be converted into a community library. While most items are readily accepted, furniture and electrical items are not, with the exception of old sewing machines. It is requested that items be in new condition, complete and clean. The society was founded as a response to the “horrendous circumstances facing orphaned children in Zimbabwe” according to the website. The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society (FVHRS) inaugurated operations of the Heritage Rail Demonstration Project and officially opened the replica Cloverdale Station. Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) horticulture students made sure the station looked picture perfect for its debut. Under the leadership of KPU instructor Betty Cunnin, the University’s School of Horticulture Landscape Design students created a number of hanging baskets, which are currently on display at the station. The students are also developing a landscaping plan for the heritage station – a plan that is set to be complete in December 2013. As part of KPU’s horticulture class in landscape design, students practice the basic principles of landscape design, including plant composition, creative problem solving, and functional and design uses of landscape materials. They also prepare working drawings, such as concept and planting plans for clients.

Minor Baseball Association will be sending two teams to interprovincial championship tournament. The Cloverdale Spurs won B.C. Minor Baseball’s 15-and-under (Bantam) provincial championship in Kamloops and will play at the national tournament Aug. 22-25 in Vaughn, Ontario. Cloverdale placed second in their group in round robin play, winning two of four games. In Sunday’s playoff round, they topped Abbotsford 11-0 then edged the Vancouver Mounties 4-3 in the championship game. The Spurs trailed 3-1 after six innings, but got a two-out, three-run home run from Aiden Mordecai in the top of the seventh. Broden Bydeweg was the winning pitcher, getting a strikeout to end the game with two Mounties on base. The Spurs also claimed the provincial championship in the 18-and-under (Midget) age group in Chilliwack, and will play at the Western Canada tournament Aug. 22-25 in Winnipeg. Cloverdale won all five games at the eight-team competition in Chilliwack, edging the Richmond Chuckers 3-2 in a semifinal contest before scoring seven runs in the first inning of the final on their way to an 11-2 victory over the South Okanagan Tigers. Cloverdale Minor Baseball also hosted a pair of Mosquito (11-and-under) tourna-

The team advanced to the championship game of the Junior Little League national tournament yesterday (Wednesday) with a 14-6 win over the host Lethbridge Giants in a semifinal contest. They will play in the final at noon, with the national champion heading off to the World Series Aug. 11-17 in Taylor, Michigan. Arjun Sharma with four hits, Marcus Cleto with three, and Jordan Baxter, Brendan Yip and Clayton Sandover with two each helped Whalley get past the host team. Whalley went 5-1 (won-lost) in the round robin to place second among the seven teams at the tournament for 13-14-year-olds. The B.C. champions got off to a perfect start by defeating the host team 7-0 Wednesday evening, then defeating the Saskatchewan champions 10-4 on Thursday. Sandover, Baxter and Zach Eastman each had a pair of hits Wednesday. Sandover’s two-run single capped a four-run sixth inning for Whalley. Sandover was also the winning pitcher, throwing four innings and allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four batters. Thursday morning, Whalley defeated the Saskatchewan champion Kiwanis Nationals, with Yip and Joshua Jawanda leading the way, each with three hits and a pair

of runs scored. Cleto drove in three-runs, two on a two-out single in the fifth inning. Keenan Wong was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk. Baxter threw four and two-third innings in relief, collecting four strikeouts. He surrendered a run on two hits and a walk. The only loss of the tournament was a 2-1 setback against the unbeaten Rocky Mountain Red Sox in a game that took nine innings to decide. Yip drew a walk in the third inning, and scored on an infield out by Jawanda for the lone Whalley score. After a day off Sunday, Whalley won twice on Monday to improve to 4-1 (won-lost). The first win was a 3-2 decision over the Sidney Mines Ramblers of Nova Scotia. The B.C. team scored twice win the first inning as Cleto singled to score Yip from second, then scored himself when Baxter drew a bases-loaded walk. Wong crossed the plate for the winning run in the third inning, scoring on a single by Jawanda. Wong and Jawada both had a pair of hits. Whalley blew a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning against the East Nepean Eagles. The Ontario champions scored six times to take a 7-4 lead, but Whalley exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-7 victory. Wong, Yip, Cleto and Jawanda each had a pair of hits, with Yip and Cleto collecting two RBIs each.

We say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;almostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; because, however you measure it, cycling ranges from 33% to 50% of trips taken in Copenhagen, and from 38% to 60% in Amsterdam. So not really â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;universalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, but enough, in Amsterdamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case, to earn it first place on the 2013 list of the 20 most bike-friendly cities in the world published by the Danish urban planning consultancy, Copenhagenize Design. Copenhagen was a close second. Each of Holland, France, and Germany has three cities on the list, followed by two each for Spain and Japan. The rest are European cities, except for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Montreal, Canada. For more see: copenhagenize.eu/index/index.html. In an aptly headlined article, The New York Times newspaper recently reported on the challenges of the widespread embrace of urban cycling in Amsterdam: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Dutch Prize Their Pedal Power, but a Sea of Bikes Swamps Their Capital.â&#x20AC;? Bike traffic jams are ubiquitous, and more biking has done nothing to change the near universal urban pattern of a morning and evening rush hour, except to add streams of bicycles into the mix. The newspaper article quoted a railway official responsible for bikes around

Amsterdamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Central Station (the main train station) as saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a war zone, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the next thing to it.â&#x20AC;? It cites government estimates of 880,000 bicyclesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; four times the number of carsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; for a population of 800,000, a number that may have reached â&#x20AC;&#x153;what was simply unthinkable just a few years ago: â&#x20AC;Śtoo many bikes (!)â&#x20AC;? With such numbers comes the related problem of where to park them all. A bike locked to a lamppost, bench, railing, treeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;any solid structure that will support it and allow for lock abilityâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; could replace the wooden windmill or the wooden clog as Hollandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s modern symbol, at least for Amsterdam tourists. Part of this problem stems from multiple bike ownership and the tendency to also use public space for parking seconds and thirds. This in turn leads to the other related problems, such as of high rates of theft, despite the prevalence of substantial locking devicesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;many of which look more valuable than the bikes they are securingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and high rates of abandonment. Annually 12,000 to 15,000 bicycles are reportedly fished out of the canals and the city regularly collects scores of junked bicycles. Pedestrian vulnerability, especially for tourists, is also an issue. One responder commented on the danger of walking on the smooth, wide bike paths, especially now that these are shared by motor scooters traveling at twice the speed of the bicycles. It is almost impossible to avoid doing so, especially at intersections where crossing involves negotiating first the bike lane, then the roadway, and then sometimes a track-lined tram way.
