Region New map celebrates Kokanee Glacier Park’s 90th anniversary SUBMITTED Friends of West Kootenay Parks

Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park users are getting a much-needed update to the topographic maps which have served them for decades. This summer, Friends of West Kootenay Parks and Mighty Bighorn Maps are collaborating to create a map which reflects the community’s deep attachment to the park,

the park’s history, and its future. Over the next few months park enthusiasts will delve into historical archives, head out to the park to survey trails and climbing routes, and collect detailed photographs and measurements of Kokanee Glacier. Created in 1923, Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park has played an important role for area mountaineers, backcountry skiers, and nature lovers.

Created in 1923, Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park has played an important role for mountaineers, skiers and nature lovers. To fully represent the public’s intimate knowledge of the Park, Friends of West Kootenay Parks

has chosen a community-based model to research the material for the map’s content. A map committee has been convened by the Friends and is actively pursuing research for the map’s content. Members of the public are being encouraged to join the map committee to contribute to content, and share park photographs. Trevor Campbell, owner of Kootenay-based

Mighty Bighorn Maps, is leading the survey of park trails and climbing routes. Along with trails and climbing routes, Trevor plans to conduct a glacier survey in September that will provide measurement data of Kokanee Glacier. It is hoped that glacier measurements and photographs can be used in the future to monitor the glacier’s retreat. The park survey is an arduous task that requires lots of planning and sup-

port – volunteers are being sought to accompany surveyors and act as base camp support. The Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society is a registered non-profit society formed in 1988. Among its purposes is to support protection and preservation of West Kootenay Provincial Parks. Mighty Bighorn Maps was founded in 2011 and has published backcountry ski maps in the West Kootenay.

If you saw a stand up paddle board (SUP) armada making its way down the Columbia River near Castlegar last Thursday, they were there because the waterway they were scheduled to be on was closed. Andrea Ryman, of Endless Adventure based in the Crescent Valley, said she had no choice but to change the venue for the group after being unexpectedly displaced from the Slocan River after a jet fuel spill on Friday, July 26. “We’ve had to make some adjustments to our tours,” she said. “Its pretty devastating what’s been going on as far as the river goes and especially for the people living in the community.” A number of people in Thursday’s group were from Manitoba and Ryman said at the time she and her co-owner husband, Chris, just wanted to offer clients as much as possible. Tim Putnam from Winnipeg said it was the second year he has come to the Kootenays to enjoy the outdoors with Endless Adventure. “The depth and quality of instruction and ratio of instructors to guests is unbelievable,” said Putnam. Endless Adventure mostly offers instruction for whitewater kayaking, recreational kayaking and standup paddle boarding but also sells kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. They also started offering youth camps and run a free “Flat-water Social” from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Monday nights at the boat launch across from the Lion’s Head Pub in Robson. Kayaks and SUP boards are available for those eager to learn. In a followup conversation Monday, August 5, Ryman said they have been told to “sit tight” for about

two weeks until crews have a better sense of when they may be allowed back on the river. “I’ve had a few people say, ‘Oh, we will just postpone and I’ll get on the river at the end of the summer’ and I’ve been telling people we shouldn’t think like that,” she said. “If you want to do something fun, let’s do it now because it’s possible we won’t be on the Slocan again this year.” The Slocan River is currently under a “Vessel Operating Restriction” in order to protect workers and the public while efforts are made to contain and clean up about 30,000 litres of jet fuel that spilled from a tanker. Additionally, a “Do Not Use” order issued

by Interior Health for drinking water and recreational use for Lemon Creek, Slocan River and Kootenay River above and below Brilliant Dam, is still in effect. Ryman said there are a lot of tourists coming into the area who have heard about the spill and are wondering what to do. Now in their seventh summer, Endless Adventure has 12 staff in Canada and has also operated an all-inclusive kayak/ surf vacation in Ecuador from November through February for the past five years. They employ anywhere from three to five guides, including at least two locals while in Ecuador. Between tours and instruction, Ryman estimates they prob-

Through the Walls of Time Arrow Lakes community recalls involvement of Burton brothers GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Twenty-third in a more-alphabetical-than-not series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Burton, on Upper Arrow Lake, is named after Reuben S. Burton (1868-1912) who pre-empted land there in August 1893, a few months before it became a jumping off point for a short-lived Cariboo Creek gold rush. The earliest mention is in the Nakusp Ledge of July 5, 1894: “R.S. Burton and the other ranchers along the Narrows have decided to call the new town springing up at the mouth of Trout Creek Burton City, in honor of the owner of the townsite.” The townsite was not surveyed, however, until June 22, 1897 by Allan Poyntz Pat-

rick — the man who found the first oil in Alberta, though it didn’t make him rich. Burton’s streets included Slocan, Alberta, Bow, Cariboo, Victoria, Kootenay, and Lardeau, and its avenues were Columbia, Vancouver, Kamloops, Golden, Calgary, Galena, and The Strand. The Burton post office opened on May 1, 1896. Curiously, the Nelson Daily News of May 23, 1909 stated: “A post office has lately been established at what was formerly known as Burton city … and which has been renamed Burton.” None of the usual postal history sources indicate it closed around this time. Reuben Burton, postmaster from 1896-1900, died in California in 1912 of typhoid fever. He’s buried in William-

stown, Ontario. His brothers Byron (1874fl. 1901) and Arthur (1878-fl. 1911) also located pre-emptions in the area. When a school opened in 1909, it was called Burtondale, presumably to distinguish it from another Burton in the Dewdney riding. But in 1930, Burtondale school became just Burton. Following the construction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam in the 1960s, the original Burton townsite was flooded out and the community relocated to higher ground at what was first called New Burton, but soon just Burton. It’s not very widely known that Burton had originally been known as Perksville, after Nakusp hotelkeeper John Vincent Perks (1868-1957). The first reference was in the Nakusp

Ledge of January 18, 1894: “Almost the entire population of Perksville, a thriving little hamlet at the lower end of the Narrows, came up last Thursday evening, in charge of Commander J. Dawson.” Perksville only received a few more mentions before being renamed Burton. The key one on February 1 read: “F.G. Stapleton-C otton and W. Long departed for Perksville last Thursday, their example being imitated by Messrs. Perks and Burton, who left for the same place on Tuesday.” Perks may have been a cousin to the Burtons, for his brother was named Harry Burton Perks. Ethnographer James Teit recorded a Sinixt name, xaé’kEn, for a creek below Burton, but provided no translation.

Boundary takes no back seat in terms of arts and culture Grand forks staff West Kooteany Advertiser

It may be August already but there are still plenty of fun and exciting events to come in the Kootenay Boundary region. The Kettle River Festival of the Arts organization, which is a subcommittee of the Boundary District

Arts Council, is sponsoring several events throughout the summer. “We don’t actually create the events,” said Ray Lafleur, treasurer for the Kettle River Festival of the Arts. “We help coordinate things and promote them with our advertising. Its basically to showcase local talent.

We picked August partly because Christina Lake has so many visitors. Our intention is to hold them across the Boundary. This year we got them into Greenwood, Rock Creek, Christina Lake and Grand Forks.” Some events have already passed, such as the Riverfest and

Art Walk in Rock Creek on August 3 and 4 but there are still plenty of great events to come. “We have a network of festivals,” added Karen Mauro, chair of the festival of arts. “Coming up today is Fiestaval out at the (Christina) lake, there’s the Columbia Basin Cultural Tour

at the lake, there’s the downtown merchant’s day (Wild West Day) in Grand Forks this Friday (Aug. 9). There’s a Raising the Roof Event in Grand Forks on Aug. 11, which is the closing.” The Fiestaval takes place tomorrow at Christina Living Arts Centre in Christina Lake and features a

Our website, which we’re very proud of, posts all the events on it. Grand forks staff West Kootenay Advertiser

The actions of three individuals prevented a forest fire at the scene of an Aug. 1 accident on Highway according to Grand Forks RCMP. The truck rollover accident and subsequent fire occurred near the Wilgress Lake rest area, between Grand Forks and Green-

wood, and Grand Forks Fire Rescue was dispatched but Const. Neal Kalnin said passersby assisted greatly in containing the fire. “The fire travelled up the hill and three people took the time to stop and put out the fire that was travelling up the embankment and I believe due to their actions, we did not have a forest fire,” Kalnin said.

Independent candidate Hughes was top choice of Arrow Lakes voters greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

There’s something to be said for being the hometown candidate, even if it doesn’t win you the election, poll-by-poll breakdowns from the last provincial election suggest. Neither Joseph Hughes, a Nakusp village councillor who ran in Kootenay West as an independent, nor Greg Garbula, the Liberal candidate in Nelson-Creston came close to winning their respective races, but they did top some polls in their own backyards. Data released by Elections BC from the May vote shows that Hughes, who campaigned on the Columbia River Treaty and finished third among four candidates with 13 per cent of the vote, was the top choice among Upper Arrow Lake residents. He won seven of the 11 ballot boxes in that area, securing 37.5 per cent of the vote to incumbent New Democrat Katrine Conroy’s 34.4 per

cent. Conroy still won a landslide re-election overall, with heavy support everywhere else in the riding, including the Slocan Valley, Castlegar, and Greater Trail. Liberal candidate Jim Postnikoff only won a single poll, in the Glenbank area of Nakusp, although he finished second in most others. Garbula, formerly the longtime manager of Kokanee Springs Resort at Crawford Bay, won three

polls on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, earning strongest support in the corridor between Boswell and Wynndel. However, incumbent New Democrat Michelle Mungall easily took polls that included Crawford Bay, Gray Creek, Riondel, Pilot Bay, and Kootenay Bay. Garbula also won several polls in Creston, but so did Mungall. Green Party candidate Sjeng Derkx didn’t win any

polls en route to a thirdplace finish, but was runner-up in many, especially in and around Nelson. Mungall won the overall race by a wide margin. In Boundary-Similkameen, Grand Forks residents were much more likely to vote New Democrat than elsewhere in the riding: Sam Hancheroff took 15 of 17 polls over Liberal challenger Linda Larson. Hancheroff also won both Greenwood polls and two of three in Midway. Things were closer in Christina Lake, where Larson took two polls, Hancheroff one, and they tied in another. They also tied in Rock Creek. Larson saw strong support in the western part of the riding, including Oliver, where she was on town council, and Kaleden, where Hancheroff lives — in this instance, he didn’t enjoy a home-town advantage. Larson was ultimately elected with 46.6 per cent of the vote to Hancheroff ’s 39 per cent.

Church & State – is all about balance Of the many stops I made on a recent tour through the Okanagan, Church & State Wines was one of the truly memorable ones. First, about the name. It isn’t as complicated as one might expect: “Symbolizes a balance between the many elements involved in creating the highest quality wine we can produce,” says the literature. I arrived late one afternoon, without an appointment. The drive to the winery takes one straight into the centre of a huge vineyard on the Black Sage bench, one of the best growing areas in the country. A grey industrial-type building belies what the visit was about to reveal. Over to the north was huge tent set up on a wood floor. At another winery I had been told that it has served as owner Kim Pullen’s home in recent months. It wasn’t a question I pursued while there, but wine shop manager Trish Lynn told other guests that it could be used for events in the future.

Lorne Eckersley

La Dolce Vita A successful businessman, Pullen founded Church & State on Vancouver Island in 2004 when he purchased a 25-acre estate on the Saanich Peninsula. The existing building was renovated to become a Napa Valley-like destination for visitors and to accommodate events. First, fruit was brought in from contract growers in the Okanagan, and then Pullen purchased a 15-acre parcel on the Golden Mile, where Merlot, Viognier and Malbec now grow. He then acquired the

A7

land that has become Coyote Bowl Vineyard, which is now home to the winemaking facilities and fabulous wine bars and shop. Plantings there include Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Bordeaux, which allow Church & State to make their flagship Bordeaux blend, Quintessential, from grapes grown on site. Another purchase of property nearby allowed for the planting of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier to produce a Rhone blend, Trebella. Last year, Coyote Bowl had added to it an outdoor tasting bar, “where guests can sit and enjoy one of the most cutting edge winery experiences in B.C.” Visitors can enjoy wine samples or a glass while looking out from their seats under the awning-covered bar to a remarkable view. Inside the building is a long granite bar with plenty of seats for wine samplers. Behind the bar a glass wall shows off the barrel room behind. Wine

writer Anthony Gismondi writes that the winery has “The two best wine bar experiences in the Okanagan.” When I arrived, hoping to meet with Trish Lynn to do a magazine story interview on Church & State Wines, a couple of small groups were seated, and clearly enjoying what they were tasting. I assured Trish I was not in a hurry and sat back to watch her conduct tastings for a half dozen women who had arrived in a wine country touring limo. They were out for a day of fun, but they clearly knew plenty about wine, too. They also knew what they liked, as evidenced by the stacked wheeled cart that was used to haul cases out to the limo. I was at the end of a long day, too tired to do much in the way of sampling, but my sips of Cab Franc and Syrah were over-the-top good. No surprise there, though, because at the outset Pullen set a goal to have one of the top three wineries in B.C. Continued on P. A10

Pickleballers prep for...

SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser

The tennis courts in Trail’s Butler Park were a hub of action this week as 11 Greater Trail pickleball athletes honed their skills in preparation for the 16th annual BC Senior Games. This summer, from Aug. 20 to 24, Kamloops will host the multi-sport event to 3,500 participants from all over the province. With close to 30 sports ranging from pickleball to ice hockey, and cribbage to one-act-plays the games are a unique event that promotes health and lifestyle of athletes 55—plus with the mission “to promote active participation by seniors in sport, recreation, fitness, culture and self-education.” Trail, Castlegar and Nelson collectively hosted the Games in 2011, attracting more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and supporters to the area. For Fruitvale native John Wurflinger, a two-year member of the Greater Trail Pickleball Community, the games

will be a first-time experience “I am excited,” said Wurflinger. “I am really looking forward to seeing how we measure up compared to the rest of the province.” To qualify for the games in Greater Trail, a system is in place in the pickleball community, based on ability of play, rather than age group. “I have no super expectations of my game but I am looking forward to playing,” he said. “And it gives me an opportunity in a competitive scene to find out how well I am doing.” Wurflinger been serving up his competitive spirit with fellow pickleball members all year, but in July his grandchildren gave him a run for his money. “It is an easy and fun game to play,” he said. “My six and eight-year old grandchildren were visiting this summer and hit the ball with us. And they did very well for first-time players,” he chuckled. Wurflinger frequently travels outside his home turf to rally a friendly game, and

Monday he challenged pickleball enthusiasts in Grand Forks to a round. “Just yesterday we went there to play some really great people,” he said. “Not only is great teamwork and exercise involved, but it is a very sociable game which is why most of us play.” Last week the Greater Trail Pickleball Community jumped into a project and began converting a Butler Park tennis court into a dedicated pickleball court, an initiative that has been on the back burner for a few years awaiting approval from the City of Trail. Earlier this year, the city allotted $10,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program to the Greater Trail Pickleball Community for conversion of a Butler Park tennis court into a dedicated pickleball court. “What we are finding is that with the number of people playing pickleball, three courts just aren’t enough,” Wurflinger explained.

“We figure that we can get four pickleball courts on just one tennis court, but we’ve had to convince the city that it is possible.”

Although pickleball appears to be very similar to tennis, it is more accessible to a wider range of players, particularly children and seniors. The game is played with a hard paddle

and plastic wiffle (pickleball) ball, and a net similar to that used in tennis, but mounted two inches lower. The pickleball ball typically moves at one-third the average speed of a tennis ball

and the court is just under one-third the area of a tennis court. “There is a move afoot because the sport is growing and we think it should grow some more,” said Wurflinger.

Mika Fortin is a happy sevenyear-old girl who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (autism) at age five. Her family knew their amazing daughter was developing atypically and they started varied therapies from age two. She is making steady progress: seeks out her family’s company, shows more eye-contact and has developed a greater attention span and she now uses around 15 words regularly, expresses her wants more clearly and has been known to contribute to the dinner table conversations from time to time. But the fundraising effort to help pay for her education and special needs continues and the family has turned to the community of Rossland for help. So far the family has raised $8,000 towards their $13,000 goal. They’ve also made it to the Option Institute for a total of three advanced programs in the last 18 months to solidify their home program. Mika’s mom Genevieve Fortin will continue to home school Mika through the summer and started training a new facilitator that will start in September. They will be doing an intensive program with Mika starting Sept. 30. This is awesome and scary news as they are still in need of more funds to make it happen, $5,000 more to be exact. The July and fall sessions will run at $2,000-$3000. The family used their personal funds as much as they could and the school

funding helps a long ways to pay a teacher/facilitator at home to help Genevieve, but between running a gluten and corn free diet with probiotics supplements and the costs of tuition/training they cannot do it alone. Hence their need to fund raise, again. “We are so grateful for the contributions of the community. It’s a real lesson in humility every time we receive donations, but we love our daughter and we will do everything to offer her the best chance to find her voice,” said Genevieve. “We do what we believe in and if it means asking for help, so be it. In exchange, people that give can really impact the life of a little girl, her family and the community she belongs to.” If you’d like to help, contactFinding Mika’s voice: Box 2035, Rossland, BC, V0G 1Y0

the 2009 Coyote Bowl Syrah was named Red Wine of the Year at the Canadian Wine Awards. The same wine captured the imagination of no less than Jancis Robinson, who this year named it Canada’s Best Red Wine. Church & State Wines is one of the province’s must-visit experiences for wine tourists, with fabulous wines, incredible location and very knowledgeable staff. An added incentive is that some wines are available exclusively at the Coyote Bowl winery. I can hardly wait for my next trip through the area and I plan to make the time for a more leisurely tasting. –Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance - a Black Press Publication.

WKA Editor

Whoever the dog-lover was who coined the phrase: ‘man’s best friend,’ was pretty close to the mark. The only revision would be ‘man, woman and kids’ best friend.’ Yes, we all love our dogs and there are a million reasons why. The West Kootenay Kennel Club has been celebrating purebred dogs for the past four decades and is holding an event in Castlegar Friday through Sunday, August 16-18 at the Castlegar Community Church field. It’s up the hill near Kinnaird Park. “This year we will be hosting our 39th Annual All Breed Dog Show and Obedience and Rally Obedience trials,” says club planner Donna Konkin. “Over the years the

dog show has been held in various locations throughout the area.” It’s fascinating to see this wide variety of dogs, especially when they’re put to the test in their various trials. The public is welcome to come out and enjoy the spectacle. These competitors don’t see any difference between themselves and world champions and neither would a casual observer. The West Kootenay Kennel Club encourages interested folks to join the group which currently stands at 28

members. The club meets monthly, is governed by the Canadian Kennel Club, and currently has 20 beautiful breeds represented. “We support each other in all aspects of training and just enjoying the time we spend with our dogs,” says Konkin who, in 2012, earned the distinction of ‘Owner/ Handler of the Year.’ Keep this August 16-18 event in mind and if you want more information, please contact Shirley Hubel at 250-365-7038 or email mhubel1@telus. net

gar. Featuring artists from across North America, viewers can vote for their favourite via ballot: The People’s Choice is purchased by the City of Castlegar for the permanent collection. Joining us

this year is Jillian Davis who is a painter who received her BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Jillian’s work is bold, contemporary, and often based on concepts or intuitive states.

Sculpture Talk

2012

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

Lee Leuning & Sherri Treeby ‘School’s Out’ (bronze) It’s nearly summertime, that glorious moment when schoolchildren the world over can abandon learning and enjoy two months of unbridled freedom. Appropriately, the talented duo of Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby celebrate the rite of passage with ‘School’s Out’ in their second appearance at Sculpturewalk Castlegar. Two years ago, their whimsical bronze of a book-engrossed young man oblivious to his dripping ice cream cone and beneficial terrier - Summer Distractions – was a favourite here. The imagery is not dissimilar in ‘Schools Out’ but the mood certainly is. Young Chet is all action, schoolbooks abandoned at his feet and report card (unflattering; he’s had trouble focusing it says) jammed unheeded in the back pocket of rolled up at the cuff jeans. It’s baseball time! Our protagonist rears back imitating the great Satchel Paige’s unorthodox style, his right hand clenching the ball nearly touching the ground. His left leg is kicked high as he readies

to throw smoke at an unseen batter. Glove resting on his left hip, spindly arms in a t-shirt, his face is a study in concentration under his ball cap as he stretches fully and prepares to uncoil a fastball. Perfectly titled, ‘School’s Out’ is a classic pose of a favourite summer pursuit, capturing the pleasure of the game and the finally-realized joy of being free to play it.

“Over a decade ago we were chosen as part of a national group of four sculptors commissioned for the American Presidents project in Rapid City, South Dakota,” says Leuning. “Over the life of that massive project we’ve sculpted ten of the life-size, exact bronze monuments. Now historical figure commissions make up much of our busy schedule.”

“The human form, especially the female, offers so many possibilities to me,” he says. “More important though, is to visualize and embrace that form as the essence of something much deeper. I try to capture the intrinsic ‘being’ when I create. I aim to sculpt the soul of the form, it enables my soul and heart to be transferred to the piece.”

The two South Dakota artists have worked together for many years, first collaborating while both attended Northern State University in Aberdeen; Treeby while completing a Master’s degree in art history and Leuning in the course of evening art classes. Eventually they launched their own company – Bad River Artworks – and became more serious about fulltime sculpting. Leuning is a retired wildlife enforcement officer while Treeby continues to teach, both at the high school level and as a college art instructor.

That said, the duo are adept at creating almost anyone, or anything ( university mascots, dragons, animals), in beautiful, life-like bronze. The detail is incredibly exacting in every instance, whether it’s a president, a soldier, a shepherd, an eagle or a playground baseball player.

He has succeeded brilliantly with ‘To Love Is To Be’. The five foot tall work rises from its granite beginning in a swirl of flourishes, his characteristic initial abstraction merging into the clean, exact anatomy of a young goddess looking and raising her arms heavenward. Clad in gauzy fabric, her wavy hair tied in a full bun behind her head, she stretches her fingers imploringly. The second in the four ‘breaths’ in the Meditation series, ‘To Love Is To Be’ speaks from and to the heart.

Initially, their forte was highly detailed animal studies, gaining them a national reputation through featured artists status for conservation organizations like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Ducks Unlimited. These and other charity/conservation organizations sold their wildlife sculptures at auctions and fundraising events. While they still do scale replicas and original works of animal studies, nowadays they specialize in high-relief figurative bronzes, with an emphasis on historical figures or representations emblematic of a particular period of time in American history.

town C a s t l e g a n w o

‘School’s Out’ is Treeby and Leuning at their best: artistically imaginative, detailed, and playful too. It’s a wonderfully cast bronze that celebrates one of America’s favourite sporting pastimes personified by youthful exuberance at a special time of year.

Martin Eichinger ‘To Love Is To Be’ (bronze) Currently touring the United States with his latest collection of stunning bronzes – the Meditation series – Martin Eichinger is never one to rest on his considerable laurels. His evocative studies capture the wonder and beauty of the (predominantly) female form in thematic series of delicate, gracefully styled bronzes painstakingly envisioned and crafted in his Portland, Oregon studio. Meditation features four linked sculptures that are distinctively Eichinger’s; his style is undeniably romantic, personal, and narrative. Last year, he displayed the ethereal, beautiful Three Options Are Open from the same series at Sculpturewalk.

“This breath is all about emotive release, of loving and being loved,” Eichinger explains. “There is plaintive longing here. The need for, in addition to the desire to give, comfort, tender caress and requited love is emphasized in her expression, her physique and her reach forward.” Dynamic, self-exacting and insistent on perfection in his studies, Eichinger’s narrative, emotive limitededition sculptures can be found in private and public collections around the world. His work is carried by more than two dozen galleries across the United States.

A professional member and Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, he is also a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Sculpture Association. He has done numerous commissions and is the recipient of many major awards, but his proudest achievement is the years spent instructing and mentoring young artists in figurative sculpture techniques. Many of his students have gone on to enjoy successful careers of their own. “To impart knowledge and share the passion invoked by creativity is truly a joy,” he acknowledges. “I’m an emotional person – it’s apparent in my work – and I want to fire the emotions and stoke the souls of my students when I’m instructing. Desire and heart are a must.” The qualities Eichinger instills in his students is plainly evident in his lovely sculpture displayed here this year. ‘To Love Is To Be’ is aptly titled, lovingly created and spectacularly cast.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week August 2 to 9, 2013

Tip of the Week: With the rare and powerful Grand Trine in Water (July 17) and Mars Opposition Pluto (July 27) and the Star of David (July 29) and Mars Square Uranus (July 31) now behind us, but all still reverberating powerfully, and the New Moon in Leo (August 6) and Jupiter opposition Pluto (August 7) this is a major time of change for us all! Right in the midst of all this on July 22 less than an hour before the exact Full Moon and the Sun entering Leo, Prince George was born. A close examination of his Birth Chart certainly reveals all the grandeur and complexity that might be imagined of the new prince. There are certainly some pluses there in baby Georges chart, and it has its full fair share of challenges as well. I will bring closer attention to it in my upcoming newsletter which you can subscribe to on my website and is posted on my Facebook Fan Page (Sunstar Astrology). But the really big news is the steadily emerging global village and the changing economy. This morphing process is moving faster with each new day and we are all challenged to keep up. This requires that we are more aware and in-tune with both the outer flow and our own true destiny line. This is where Astrology can help you significantly. Those who continue to parrot the notion that Astrology does not work are simply expressing their prejudice and conditioned closed mind. They are still stuck in the old paradigm that is founded upon mechanistic physics and materialistic conclusions. We are living in a new paradigm now. It can be described as the quantum age. Ironically, this ‘New Age’ may also be called the New Ancient because many ancient truths are unearthed and re-awakened. In this new paradigm, purely linear logic, dogmatic attitudes and reductionism will all go extinct and this is happening right now. Our times require a more spiritually conscious, accepting, open, flexible and dynamic mode of whole brain thinking than ever before. Our individual and collective challenge now is to tune-in and flow with the dynamic and dramatic flow of changes happening in every sector of modern civilization. Thanks to many years of experience assisting people using Astrology and Numerology, I can help you to tune-in to your authentic nature and identify and align with your destiny line.

The New Moon in Leo on August 6 will activate a more playful, creative and perhaps romantic mood than you have felt for a while. This will contribute to boost your confidence to beautify your home and/or create more harmony with your family. There does remain a more sobering element all the while linked to deeper changes brewing within. The pace of things is steadily speeding up for you. Demands of your time, energy and focus are coming from many fronts. Fortunately, your energy levels are running high. You feel moved to get to the bottom of things somehow. At best, this pace is activating your creative dynamism. Commitment to a brighter future is the rock in your roll. Your sights are set on creating a more secure foundation. Health is the key word here. It can be applied in a variety of directions: attitude, body, diet, mental and emotional balance, lifestyle habits…. This theme will continue for a couple of years but this is an important time to take a fresh start. You will have to be clear, disciplined and willing to do the work to succeed. A big, bold, brassy and exciting cycle has begun for you over the past several weeks. You should feel it as a boost of confidence. It will inspire you to take some risks and makes some moves that you would not have previously. Now that the start shot has been sounded, focus to establish a steady momentum and a determined stride. This week’s New Moon in your sign will spark some key initiatives. You may feel the need to dig deeper than usual to access deeper reserves of faith to follow through. You are deeply in a cycle that requires that you ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. This includes opening up and perhaps exposing some of your vulnerabilities. This could prove extra apparent over the coming weeks. All being well you have expanded your scope and stimulated your network. Now it is time to follow through on the leads you have activated and otherwise work behind the scenes, lay low and/or retreat for a little while. You can still be productive and may in fact be even more so than usual. Be willing to multi-task as necessary.

Some key initiatives and events in your public and/or professional life have been keeping you busy. These have brought you more exposure. Yet, have also likely required extra efforts. Making key investments has and will continue to be an important theme. Now it is time to play. Accept invitations or make your own. Circumstances and key players have been pushing you to see a bigger picture. Now it is time to more fully engage your imagination to create new opportunities. Approaching authority figures for favours and earned rewards over the coming weeks should prove favourable. Assuming a more philosophical and perhaps spiritual perspective will linger longer yet. A time of clearing, purging and purifying is entering a new stage. It has caused you to go deep and has likely stirred your emotions in a big way. At best, it has inspired your passions and even synchronized with a new flow of abundance. Now, the Leo cycle is activating a more playful and adventurous mood. Catch the spirit of fun and games. Many new and big beginnings on relationship fronts are occurring these days. Some of these are causing you to let go of things, attitudes, approaches and/or perspectives you once valued. Their time is up and it is important for you to move on to your next set of experiences. The good news is that the cycle that has just begun will open your whole world wide. The seeds of new lifestyle rhythms have been sown. To achieve this you have had to take some very calculated risks which were not so easy to do. For the sake of increased abundance, prosperity and overall fulfillment though, you did it. Now it is time to stimulate new relationships. Put on your diplomats cap and start shaking hands. A creative cycle continues and is keeping you busy on a variety of fronts. Now it is time to improve, refine and complete what you started a couple of months ago. This process may take a few weeks, especially considering the spectrum of fronts, but now is the time to do it. Consequently, this is probably not the time to start anything new, until month’s end anyway.
