The Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall grounds at 103 Mile were a sea of activity on Aug. 2-5. Congregation members from all over the north central area of British Columbia gathered for a giant work bee to spruce up the 103 Mile hall. Patrick Louis, left, Tina Schwendiger and Doug Gerngel manned shovels as they cleaned up the shrubbery.

volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a major spruceup. The hard-working group included approximately 40 local congregation members and nearly 60 people from Kingdom Halls all over north central British Columbia who set up camp on the hall grounds and worked tire-

The to-do list included an expansion of the parking lot, landscaping, painting and a host of other jobs. Many of the volunteers were skilled trades people who oversaw projects in their field of expertise and trained others to perform the work safely and efficiently. Dale Friesen is chair for

the regional building committee and co-ordinates three or four similar projects each year, in the same manner. “We’re all friends and it’s nice to be able to work and eat together,” he says, adding a camp kitchen was set up on the grounds to keep everyone fed. Their next stop will be Houston.

CRD presents Solid Waste Management Plan

By Diana Forster Scores of residents attended the Cariboo Regional District’s (CRD) July 25 presentation on the 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) and new operations at Interlakes Landfill Site on Horse Lake Road. The CRD’s waste management officers, Mitch Minchau and Tara Grady, were introduced by CRD Area L Director Bruce Rattray. Grady gave a full, informative hour-long presentation on recycling, which left nothing to chance. She noted we pay a recycling fee when we purchase tires, oil, batteries, etc., and, if we don’t return the “dead” item to place of purchase, we are wasting our money and creating unnecessary recycling. All electronics, even toys with batteries, should go to Bee Line Courier or Gold Trail Recycling in 100 Mile House. Gold Trail also takes glass, paper and hard plastics. Grady explained how Interlakes Landfill will work. The site will be manned as of Aug. 15, to ensure proper disposal of waste. While it appeared that the majority of residents were happy with the CRD’s draft opening hours, this could not be said for the contractors who said they need to enter the site in the early morning and late evening in order not to lose a day’s work. Grady suggested that “something could probably be worked out,” and noted Interlakes’ “open” hours were different from Lone Butte’s, so residents could also go there.

If enough people asked for a specific change in hours, she added it would happen. She further mentioned that “mirror tags,” which have been distributed to Watch Lake and Lone Butte residents, are not required for Interlakes residents. The Share Shed will stay open, but scavenging is prohibited; and recycling bins will be brought on site in 2014. Beyond what they already pay on property taxes, residents will pay nothing extra to use the Interlakes Landfill Site. Contractors’ fees are expected to be the same as those applied in 100 Mile House. Backyard composters

($30) will be available in the spring to those who have applied for one. The CRD expects the new program to result in illegal dumping on Crown Land. Residents are asked to immediate-

ly report such dumping, so it can be cleaned up and patrolled. The CRD’s SWMP is intended to conserve taxpayer dollars and save the planet by producing zero waste.

Canadian Red Cross encourages British Columbians to support the annual Walmart fundraising campaign that was launched on Aug. 1. The cross-country campaign raises funds for Red Cross disaster preparedness and response activities. This year’s fundraising goal for B.C. and Yukon is $353,000. The national goal is $3 million of which more than $700,000 is matching funds from Walmart. “From forest fires or apartment fires to floods and landslides, Red Cross is there in times of need for Canadians whose lives are disrupted by disasters,” says Sharan Dhillon, Red Cross corporate giving manager. “Generous donations from British Columbians will help ensure that Red Cross is ready to respond when disaster strikes right here in B.C. communities.” For the next three weeks, Walmart customers can support the Red Cross when they shop by making a donation at the check-out counter. Walmart will match these donations up to $2,000 per store. The campaign will run in Walmart stores from Aug. 1 to 25. Following a disaster in Canada, Red Cross volunteer workers provide vital assistance for people’s basic needs including shelter, food, assistance linking to local resources, clothing and household items. Red Cross has responded to more than 100 disasters during the past year in B.C. and Yukon, providing support to hundreds of people. Red Cross assistance does not duplicate assistance provided through insurance, government or other agencies.

“Where do these go?” asked Eden Adams, front, as she and her mom, Crystal Makaro, tack up Eden’s horse for the Misty Pines Pony Club test day at the Outriders Arena in 100 Mile House on July 27.

Yellow jacket sightings created a buzz last week at a nest found on a telephone line on Telqua Drive in the 108 Mile Ranch. Yellow jacket nests usually last for one season, as they die off in the winter. Typically, a nest can reach the size of a basketball by the end of a season. Chris Nickless photo

Cedar Crest executive director Tim Guthrie greeted people as they dropped by the 40th anniversary celebration for Cedar Crest at 100 Mile Community Hall on July 31. Inside the hall, there were memory boards, and outside, free food and entertainment were available for those who dropped in.

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! Barkerville hosting gold panning championships The Canadian National Gold Panning Championships are being held in Barkerville Aug. 10-11 to help celebrate Billy Barker’s legendary gold strike with a spirited and friendly competition featuring a huge range of categories for all ages and skill levels. Presented by Integris Credit Union and Barkerville Historic Town, the championships feature exciting prizes that will inspire the very best in com-

This year, the person to beat will be two-time winner and Wells local Karen St. John. “Everyone who comes has a great time,” says James Douglas, Barkerville’s Visitor Experiences manager. “Whether you’re an experienced panner or someone who’s never done it before, you’ll find an incredibly supportive atmosphere at the event.” Continued on 12

Ho s t e d by Barkerville’s own seventime World Invitational Gold Panning Champion, Scott Rea, the 2013 Canadian National Gold Panning Championships is a two-day event with categories that include child, adult, seniors, professionals, teams, dash for the dentist (children’s candy-hunt), scavenger pile (adult free-for-all), grudge match, and King of the Creek (ultimate contest for bragging rights and a $1000 cash prize). Each category has cash prizes and sponsored gifts for the winners and anyone can participate, provided they register 10 minutes prior to each event. “If you want bragging rights to call yourself King or Queen of Williams Creek, you’ve got know you’ll be dealing with some of the

nastiest panning material around,” says Rea. “We don’t fool around in Barkerville. You’ve got to go through what the original prospectors went through here in the 1860s, using the same kind of gold pan ... and no compromises.” Says Dan Wingham, Engagement & Communications manager at Integris Credit Union: “We are pleased to partner with Barkerville and Scott Rea in promoting this event. “I was blown away with the history and importance of the competition and quality of the people organizing it. On behalf of the members of Integris, best of luck to the competitors and thanks for visiting Integris country.” For more information on the Gold Panning Championships and Barkerville special events, visit www. barkerville.ca.
