Water Features Add a Touch of Magic

Whether it is a small container with a fountain on the patio or a large pond with waterfall and bog area, water features can add another dimension to a space. Water can attract birds, butterflies and other winged visitors. The sound can have a soothing effect, as water trickles over the fountain’s edge or down a waterfall. Chances are, if you add a water feature to your yard, you will start a new passion. For an easy way to add a beautiful effect, place a spitting ornament or spray nozzle into a watertight container, add a few small plants as well as water and you are in business. If you have more room in your yard and are looking to add a larger feature, there are a few considerations as far as location goes. A pond or waterfall should be placed where you can both see and hear the water, away from large trees that will drop leaves into the water and the spot should get about six hours of sunlight. As the water feature will likely have to be topped up from time to time, a garden hose should be within easy reach. You can also incorporate an automatic filling system which will require plumbing work. You will also need access to electricity if you plan on using a recirculating pump or lighting. It is convenient to have electrical outlets close to the water feature, but make sure they are properly grounded and protected. You will get assistance and information about current regulations from your local electrician. If you have safety concerns with animals and children playing around deep ponds, a pondless waterfall might be for you. It works much like a regular pond, there is even a hole, but in this case, it is lined and filled with gravel. The water is collected there and a pump transports it back up to the top of the waterfall. Regardless of what kind of water feature you choose, it will benefit from adding plants. Aquatic and bog plants are generally hardy and undemanding as well as considerably pest-free. Plants will help absorb mineral salts from the water and provide shade for the water surface. They play a very important role in keeping a healthy ecological balance in the pond - not to mention they are attractive to look at. There are three common types of water plants. Floating plants and submerged plants with floating leaves include a wide range of water lilies, water hyacinth and water lettuce. Their leaves and pads float on the water’s surface. This intercepts sunlight and without light, algae cannot grow. They also add colour, texture and movement to the pond. The floating roots get nutrition for the plant in direct competition with algae, again limiting algae growth. Marginal or semi-aquatic plants, while anchored in the soil, can also absorb free nutrients from the water through exposed surface roots. They provide surface shade and vertical accents at the pond’s edge. Some varieties can spread rapidly and boxing them in can control their root system. Some marginal plants include water iris, Carex grasses, marsh marigold and arrowhead. Oxygenating plants are a water feature’s natural filtering system. Either potted or left to float around with the currents, these plants are fully submerged. They absorb nutrients from the water, helping reduce algae growth and at the same time provide oxygen. If you have fish in your pond, oxygenating plants also provide food and a place to find shelter, lay eggs or hide babies. Fish can be a great addition to a pond. Goldfish and Koi add life and movement and - as an added bonus - keep the mosquito population at bay by eating their larvae. As a rule of thumb, you should not add more fish than the ratio of one inch of fish to one square foot of water surface. Make ponds your passion and create some magic with water features big and small - the experts at your local garden centre can help get you started. Till next time... happy water gardening. The City of Cranbrook does its best to maintain the sewer systems, but has little control over what foreign objects may be deposited in them causing blockage. The City will not accept any claim for back up of sewers. Claims of an accidental or unforeseen nature should be processed through your Homeowner’s insurance.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. We will restore your power as soon as we can.

Hugs: To the anonymous campers at Jim Smith Lake that left us their extra wood sometime in the night. Thank you! Hugs: To the Cranbrook Bugle Band for your awesomeness while volunteering at weddings and such! Slugs: To the people that drive at 70km on the highway on the curvy spots and speed up to 140km in the passing lane. Slugs: To the people in this town that run red lights. Is it really that important that you risk everyones lives to get there one minute faster? Hugs: To the waitresses at Allegra Restaurant-the friendly service last weeek was great. I was tired and still busy working and you just made it easy to enjoy what was also a great meal-Here on business Slugs: To the motorcycle enthusiasts that promote “safe travels” but continue to believe that they can pass anyone with oncoming traffic. Pretty sure you won’t look so “free” in front of my car as I am not moving over because of your reckless behaviour. Hugs: To the great organizers of our Baynes Lake Farmers Market. Each week you continue to make it a real adventure for our tourists and locals. The selection is astounding with fresh bread, fruit and vegetables. Thanks!-Koocanusa campers Slugs: Thanks so much to the continual drivers that go below the speed limit on the highway. You back up our traffic and keep us moving like snails but somehow find the gas pedal when it comes to the passing lane only to slow down again after.-Discouraged Commuter Hugs: To the Apollo for their great service and fantastic pizza! Hugs: To the always friendly staff of the mall Tim Horton’s. Thank you for your pleasantness and knowing what I want before I need ask as I am half asleep when I drive thru for my morning coffee. Slugs: To those people who make a left turn at the 4 or 5 way stops and get angry when I proceed straight causing confusion, that is why we learned how to engage our signal lights when we first learned how to drive. If you forgot to signal, don’t flip me the bird. Hugs: To the very thoughtful staff member that brought a slab of delicious lasagne for lunch for those of us that couldn’t get away to eat. Thank you so much, it was delicious and appreciated. If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N.

In Memory of Jason Paul Wiebe (Jake) August 20, 1970 to August 4, 2009 There’s a certain breed of legends Of men that fit the mold The ones who become heroes And their stories ever told Stories filled with courage Of life few ever tread Their footprints leave impressions Of their time on earth they’ve led Their actions surpass greatness Their wisdom marked with years Their lives are but a fleeting glance And we see them now through tears Their friendships’ bonded steel Their love is ever strong Their miracles unfolding As they guide us ever on To talk about these legends Words or miracles and of dreams Can never just quite sum up All the things they’ve ever been It’s all the things they speak or do The way they give their all It’s how they never ask for help But are first to come when called It’s their passion for success Their fight to make them great Their strength that hides within them This strength no one can take Yes I now tell of legends Of heroes that grace our days Of those who walk among us Of those who’ve shaped our ways And the luckiest words I say now Are the ones I say to you A friend of mine you were to us A hero through and through by Ryan Damstrom We love and miss you more everyday Love Bernice, Jessica & Connor

OBITUARY

Wallace William Shewchuk 1936 - 2013 On Monday, July 29, 2013, Bill passed away from complications of a heart attack he suffered the previous Wednesday. He did not awaken. His wife, sons, sister, and other family members were at his side at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Bill was 76 years of age. Bill Shewchuk was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan on August 10, 1936. He was the first child and only son of the late Maria and Wasyl Wolodislav Shewchuk. He was raised in Queensborough, British Columbia, and loved to tell stories about his rough and tumble childhood years. In early adulthood he was an avid small plane pilot, learning to fly in a Cessna 140, and a scuba diver. He met his wife Lynne in 1964 at her family's business, the Kootenay Motel, married her in 1966, and lived the rest of his life in Cranbrook, British Columbia. They had two sons, in 1968 and 1970. Bill joined Canadian Telephone and Supplies in 1957, later transferred to B.C. Tel, and spent his career there as a maintenance and repair technician. Due to illness, he took a leave in 1990 and retired in 2001. In retirement, Bill served for several years as Secretary of the Cranbrook Rod & Gun Club. He was also a keen motorcyclist and was not at all dissuaded from his enthusiasm by a recent collision with a deer. He enjoyed woodworking and passed many happy hours in his garage. He served with the Senior Citizen's Coalition and, for eight years, volunteered for a Taste of Cranbrook during Cranbrook's annual Sam Steele Days. Bill is survived by his wife Lynne Marie Shewchuk, his sons Jonathan Richard Shewchuk and Steven Arthur (Stacey Begon) Shewchuk, his granddaughter Amanda Jaye Shewchuk, his sister Sonia Alexandra (Robert) Skelly, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, and several aunts and uncles. The family wishes to thank the staff at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, and Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, for the care he received. A memorial service for Bill was held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 11:00 am with a reception to follow. A private family Internment was held in Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in honour of Bill be sent to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health, 13 – 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.

Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
