Style is important, but functionality is king in the kitchen.

those who aren’t familiar with this concept. First of all, the three main zones of the kitchen are the cooking zone (stove and microwave), washing zone (sink, dishwasher, garbage and recycling bins), and provisions zone (refrigerator, cupboards, and pantry). These three zones have to be situated at a practical distance from one another in order to create a user-friendly kitchen. Together they should form a triangle which, in an ideal scenario, has three equal (or almost equal) sides. A few Tips • Avoid placing the fridge, sink, or stove at an angle • Plan to have enough standing room in front of each appliance (at least 120 cm), especially when there are two facing each other • Position the dishwasher to the right of the sink to facilitate rinsing the dishes and placing them in the dishwasher (if you’re right-handed) • Position the storage zone (cupboards and drawers where dishes are stored) between the provisions zone and the washing zone • Position the work zone (countertops) close to the cooking zone and the washing zone

As we move into the dog days of summer, the city tends to dip into a kind of torpor as it prepares for the advent of September when the kids are back in school and business can return to usual. However, this year business owners and residents seem concerned and more than a little agitated about where this city is going financially. As the city council prepares to receive guests and possible business investors from Wonju, South Korea this month, a look at where the city is going business-wise is in order. Every week citizens and business owners will come into this office and offer opinions on what the city can do to achieve renewed prosperity. Inevitably, the conversation comes down to taxation and in particular, how the businesses of the city are taxed to ruin. “It’s an easy fix,” I’m told. “Cut the taxes and businesses will re-invest in people and infrastructure— problem solved.” The problem with this basic principle is that is exactly what other municipalities have done around the province. In reading a report prepared for the BC Expert Panel on Business Tax Competitiveness entitled “Property Taxes and Competitiveness in British Columbia”, a report that compared 10 cities in the province, including Cranbrook, a few things become apparent.

The first thing that jumps out at the reader is that BC, as a whole, spends far less on its municipal services than most of Canada, a trend that probably comes from having lower municipal revenue than most of the other provinces because of a competitive tax rate. Now Cranbrook is definitely not the city with the lowest tax rate in the province, but— and this brings me to the second point that made me think—its rate is lower, by far, than many of the cities in the province and the country. Just looking to our neighbour to the east, Alberta, we pay lower property taxes here and much lower municipal taxes in many cases. So why isn’t light to medium industry flocking from Alberta to Cranbrook, the economic hub of the Kootenays? For an answer, I looked to the city’s Annual Report and its major economic initiatives. There are some good things there such as marketing the Airport Industrial Park, downtown revitalization, working to improve existing industrial land, developing an energy biomass sector and infrastructure investment. There are also some items on the list that are a little “airy”, such as a smartphone app for business, and to “develop partnerships and collaborative approaches to marketing the region...” (you mean we don’t already?), and of course, the Asia Pacific Investment Initiative.

That last point made the list because, well seriously, do you really think a business person from China will set up a manufacturing plant here? A while ago, an individual came into this office and told me what it would take to get industry to move to Cranbrook. He said it was a simple solution, although hard in practice. “The mayor has to get in his car and drive,” he explained. “He’s got to go to every city within a thousand miles and sell them on Cranbrook, face-to-face.” And while it could be the mayor, or a representative from the city, this meshes perfectly with advice from the Useful Community Development site, a blog written by city planners. “Approach business attraction through a campaign of thoughtfulness and attentiveness to needs. It requires outdoing the next guy or gal. The personal approach is best. Forget about the fancy presentations, attending expensive conferences to learn how to do it and pricey brochures. This is just about good interpersonal relationships and putting yourself in the other person’s shoes.” Of course, if none of that works, the city will just have to see what it can do to help make existing Cranbrook industry more sustainable and profitable.

You can help Jumpstart help local children Submitted Canadian Tire believes that all kids should have the opportunity to play. However, the reality is that one in three Canadian families cannot afford to enrol their children in sport or recreation activities. Canadian Tire Jumpstart® was created to help give kids a sporting chance. The charitable program helps underprivileged kids aged 4 to 18 participate in organized sport and recreation by covering the costs of registration, equipment and/or transportation. Canadian Tire corporation lends its support by helping fund the program’s administrative costs. In September 2013, for the purpose of fundraising for the Jumpstart program, Marianne Reinders will be joining a group of women from across Canada who are partners of Canadian Tire Dealers. They will be hiking through the Rocky Mountain National Parks: Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. In all they will be sum-

miting seven peaks in the Canadian Rockies. It will be a significant achievement of 88 kilometres, 32 hours of hiking and a total of 4,625 metres of altitude. All participants are personally responsible for their own travel, accommodation and meal expenses. If you wish to make a donation to Marianne’s fundraising campaign please make your cheque payable to Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. You may either drop it off at the Canadian Tire store in Cranbrook or mail it to Marianne Reinders c/o Canadian Tire, 1100 Victoria Avenue North, Cranbrook BC V1C 6G7. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for donations over $20. Please remember to include your full name and mailing address. One hundred per cent of all donations raised by Marianne will go directly to kids in our local community. In 2012, the Cranbrook chapter helped 111 kids with a disbursement of over $16,700.

The Hyundai Santa Fe offers a size built for families and the economical, peppy Sport.

Easy on the wallet and easy on the eyes, the Ford Fiesta is a smart buy for getting around.

On a grander scale, General Motors does the same with its Tahoe/Suburban big rigs and

Overall: Ford makes the entertaining and frugal Fiesta less confusing to buy. Drivetrain: Spunky 120-horsepower 1.6-litre four-cylinder is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, or optional fuelsaving six-speed directshift gearbox; Ford will add a turbo to make 175 horses when the ST model debuts. Even as the Fiesta’s newness starts wearing off, the Mexican-built fourdoor hatchback and North America-exclusive fourdoor sedan continues to be a smart buy. To make the purchase even easier, Ford streamlined the Fiesta trim levels to three. The base S, previously only a sedan trim but now available with

a number of minivans once offered similar long/short choices. For 2013 the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport, arrives first, followed by the longer (by 22 centimetres) sevenpassenger Santa Fe in early calendar 2013. The bigger Santa Fe is heftier than the Sport by more than 150 kilograms, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6 that replaces the previously optional 274-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the only transmission is a six-speed au-

tomatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai will let you add its latest all-wheeldrive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. The Santa Fe features plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Comfort (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and Sport (increases effort by the same amount) settings.

the hatch, too, comes with just the basics, which helps bring the hatcback’s base price down. The next step is the SE, which adds air conditioning, remote keyless entry, a message centre with trip computer and SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated communications and entertainment system developed in conjunction with Microsoft. The top-level newly-named Titanium also tosses in 16inch alloy wheels (15-inch wheels are standard), heated outside mirrors, push-button start, interior ambient lighting, premium sound package and heated seats. Both body styles are still easy on the wallet, with fuel economy rated at 6.9 l/100 km in the city and 5.1 on the high-

way. Those figures come from a 120-horsepower 1.6-litre four-cylinder that delivers plenty of pep for the 2,540-pound hatchback (2,580 pounds for the sedan). The base manual transmission is a slick-shifting five-speed. Optional is a six-speed direct-shift (automated manual) gearbox that functions without a traditional torque converter.

By Kristi Patton From a rockstars swagger to belting out tunes of an iconic crooner, Jason Scott has found his brass ring. “It is kind of like a gunslinger from the old days. You are the lead singer in a rock band and life is at your beck and call. You get whatever you want and have people eating up your music. That is power. Then it all disappears,” said Scott. “Now the brass ring isn’t getting the record contract.” Getting down the look, the sound and moves of Neil Diamond became Scott’s new mission. That was 15 years ago. Since then Scott was awarded the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Tribute Artists award in 2010, second place in the Vegas Tribute Idol and an invite to perform as the open-

Cranbrook Pro Rodeo 2013 Yee Ha! It’s Cranbrook Pro Rodeo time 2013 marks the 27th Annual Cranbrook Pro Rodeo. The August event continues to be a popular stop on the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association roster. 2013 promises to be as exciting as ever with three action-packed performances featuring top cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America. Vold Rodeo Ltd. will provide the rough stock once again and Maynard Bird, the timed event cattle. Fans will enjoy Wes Cummings as the Cranbrook Rodeo Announcer and entertainment by Trick Rider Shelby Cummings and Liberty Horse Trainer Niki Flundra. Cranbrook Rodeo is part of both the Duane Daines

A short primer on barrel racing Submitted Barrel racing is a timed rodeo event, where the fastest time is what matters most. Cowgirls compete in the arena against each other and the clock. Barrel racing is about cooperation between horse and rider. Because of the competition and money involved, finding a good horse is very important to the competitors. A top of the line barrel horse can cost up to $50,000. For the barrel racing event, the arena is cleared and three barrels are set up at different marked locations. The riders then enter the arena at full speed, quickly rounding each barrel in a cloverleaf pattern and then exiting see Barrel page 26

Saddle Bronc Series and the Kenton Randle Bareback Series. A Rodeo Dance is set for Saturday evening. Sunday is Children’s Day. Cranbrook Ro-

deo will feature a “SUPPORT STARS” day again this year on Saturday, Aug 17. Our concessions and beer garden will be in full swing as usual!

Fans, rodeo athletes (both two legged and four-legged), volunteers and committee members are all a big part of the Cranbrook Pro Rodeo. We in-

vite you to join us the third weekend in August, 2013 once again, for this exciting event!

all about in this event. The riders steer their horses as close as they can to the barrels trying to shave precious seconds off the clock. For each barrel they knock over (which happens sometimes) a 5 second penalty is assessed to their total time. Leaving the barrels standing and ripping through the course is every barrel racers goal. 13 to 14 seconds is generally a winning time in this event, but this will vary according to the size of the arena, as all rodeo arenas are not created equal.
