Man wants to plead guilty to murder, Red serge Mountie chases but with no lawyer, judge says ‘no’ down thief Paul Rudan

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Traigo Andretti wants to plead guilty to murder, but a judge wouldn’t a allow it – at least not yet. The 37-year-old Hanson Island man was back in Campbell River provincial court on Monday. He appeared by video from jail cells in Victoria where he’s been held since his arrest. He’s charged with first degree murder and committing an indignity to a human body. The remains of his wife, Jennifer McPherson, 41, were found May 6, on Hanson Island where the

two worked as caretakers at Pacific Outback Resort. The island is located north of Campbell River, about eight kilometres east of Telegraph Cove. McPherson was last seen on April 29. Following an extensive search, her remains were found and Andretti was arrested the same day. During a court appearance last month, Andretti’s lawyer, Roxanne Helme asked to be removed from the case because the lawyer-client relationship had broken down, she told the judge. Andretti then told the judge he doesn’t want

a lawyer. However, the court has ordered Legal Services to provide a lawyer to advise Andretti and to oversee all court proceedings. On Monday though, Andretti still didn’t have a lawyer and told the court he wants to plead. “I’m ready to enter a guilty plea to all charges,” he said. However, Judge Peter McC ar t hy wou ldn’t accept the pleas. “This is a very serious charge…you are not doing yourself any favours,” the judge warned. Crown prosecutor David Fitzsim-

mons agreed with the judge’s assessment and requested that Andretti be brought up, in person, for his next court appearance. “These video appearances don’t seem to be working,” said Fitzsimmons. “He needs (legal) counsel and we’re not getting anywhere.” He also added that Andretti needs to enter pleas in B.C. Supreme Court, not provincial court. The judge concurred and ordered Andretti to appear in person on Aug. 26, at which time a Legal Aid lawyer will be present to act on Andretti’s behalf.

Fitzsimmons also told the court that Andretti’s mother and brother – who have been in the gallery for all his court appearances – expressed concern about his mental fitness. But the prosecutor said Andretti appears to know and understand what is happening with his case. Andretti is also being investigated in connection with the death of a former girlfriend, Myrna Letandre, whose remains were found May 9 in a Winnipeg rooming house where they apparently lived together. She was last seen in October 2006.

The Mounties almost always get their man. This one was easier than most. On Aug. 6, a member of the RCMP Musical Ride was in Campbell River, en route to the horse riding show in Port Hardy, when he stopped at Shopper’s Drug Mart in the Tyee Plaza to pick up a few things. While he was there, a man well-known to local police was also there and stole a laptop computer. However, the thief didn’t seem to notice the officer who was in full ceremonial dress also known as the “red serge.” The Mountie was alerted to the theft, gave chase and caught the culprit until local officers arrived. The computer was recovered and police also found the thief was carrying some marijuana. The man is currently on a probation order. He is facing charges of theft, possession of a controlled substance and breach of a court order. His name was not released.

The catch of a lifetime

Father and son team up to land a 61-pound chinook Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The Tyee Club is celebrating its biggest catch in three decades. And it was caught by a club past-president.

Avid fisherman Mike Gage, who served as president of the Tyee Club for 13 years from 1980-’93, reeled in a 61.5 pound chinook salmon just after 8 p.m. Sunday in the famed Tyee Pool.

The timing couldn’t have been better. The catch comes almost exactly 30 years after the Tyee Club last recorded a fish weighing more than 60 pounds. The accomplishment, which will go down in the history books, was made even sweeter for Gage because it was a family affair. “Our son (Richard Gage) was rowing me,” Gage said Monday morning at the Tyee Club. “We’d been rowing for about a half an hour. There was a real heavy strike and a 40-minute battle – and then we headed back to the clubhouse.” After the battle on the water, the salmon swam straight into the net. “It was a nice, steady

fight,” Gage said. “It was a well-behaved fish, it took nice runs and tired himself out.” Richard, whose older brother Roger Gage rowed an angler to a 50 pound Tyee 34 years ago when he was just 16-years-old, guessed his dad’s prized catch had to be more than 50 pounds. Gage himself said he guessed the salmon to be in the mid-to-high 50 pound range, and was pleasantly surprised to discover upon weighin that his fish was 61.5 pounds. “We had to dig a hole in the gravel because his tail was on the scale but his head was on the ground and it was absorbing five pounds of weight,” Gage said. Helpers wanted for food drive For the third year now, Campbell River will be participating with more than 40 other communities in the B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive. Last year’s drive collected more than 250,000 pounds of food to help feed thousands who rely on food banks to eat or feed their families on a regular basis.

All food collected in the area goes to the Campbell River Food Bank. Grocery bags with a note are left on door steps or mailboxes, no ringing of the bell. If that household wants to participate, they put nonperishable food in the bag and leave it at their front door before 10 a.m.

on Saturday. Sept. 21. The food drive is a non-denominational project that is open to all interested individuals, community groups, religious organizations, businesses or others who wish to join in helping attend to the needs of the hungry in our province. The group looking for anyone who might be

interested in spending 5-20 minutes dropping of bags on Sept. 17 or 18th, and then collecting any bags that have been left out on Sept. 21 and dropping them off at 460 Goodwin St. Call local co-ordinator SueAnn Deeble at 250923-3574 to help out. Learn more at http://bctfooddrive.org

Catch: Break out the diamond pin Continued from Pg. 4

The chinook is the biggest registered fish Gage has ever caught – his largest had been a 51-pounder in 1975 – and the first he’s registered with the Tyee Club in seven years. Mayor Walter Jakeway recognized Gage’s achievement on behalf of the city, “A huge congratulations to Mike Gage for catching a 61.5 pound registered Tyee Sunday evening.” In recognition of the catch Gage will receive a diamond pin – awarded to those lucky enough to make a catch over 60 pounds. Gage’s chinook is the eighth of the season (July-September) for the Tyee Club. At this time last year, only one had been reeled in. “They’re bigger and fatter this year,” Gage said. “This year the fish are predominantly tyee. It looks like it’s starting out to be a good season.” Gage, whose five sons are all members of the Tyee Club, joined the club in 1975. He currently serves as chair of the Campbell River Salmon Foundation and has served as chair of the Campbell River Gravel Committee which works to construct spawning channels and gravel pads in the

River watershed and released into Discovery Passage, as well as to encourage the craft of fishing and to maintain accurate records of fish taken under club rules.

Last 60-pounder The last chinook over 60 pounds to be registered at the Tyee Club was on Aug. 13, 1983. The 62-pound beast was caught by Tammy McConkey and took

3x3

the trophy for biggest salmon of the season. She was rowed to her catch by Ken Enns, who now owns the River Sportsman. The fish was also officially weighed in for the 1983 Daiwa World Salmon Fishing Championship. She won that title too plus a trip for two to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii.

Martime Centre needs SPCA as a renter

Last tenant went bankrupt, left Centre with $16K debt Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The landlords of the Maritime Heritage Centre are rejecting the city’s objections to leasing out space in the city-owned facility to the SPCA for an adoption centre. M.J. (Marv) Everett, president of the Maritime Heritage Society, in a letter to council refuted city concerns that an agreement between the

city and Maritime Heritage Society requires the space be used for maritime activities or as a public meeting space and that the zoning does not conform to the SPCA’s proposed use. “The acceptance of the BC SPCA as an MHC (Maritime Heritage Centre) tenant has absolutely nothing to do with this MHS mandate and any concern of city managers to the contrary is clearly

a miss-interpretation of our duty,” Everett said. “The rental of meeting rooms and long-term lease of other space has nothing to do with (the mandate). It is purely a business matter.” Everett said over the past 10 years, the society has rented rooms to all sorts of businesses, organizations and residents regardless of their focus. Clients such as Weight Watchers, BC Forest Service, Marine Harvest, BC Hydro and others have all rented out space in the Maritime Heritage Centre.

The BC SPCA approached the Maritime Heritage Society last month to lease a 1,600 square foot space that’s currently sitting empty and which the society has been trying to fill with a long-term lease tenant for more than a year to generate funding. “It is essential to the on-going operation of the MHS and the ongoing fulfilment of our operating mandate that we find a secure and reliable tenant for the vacant MHC space,” Everett said. “ T h e l a s t t e n ant

Real estate sales remain red-hot Campbell River is leading the way on the upper Island

Some of the hottest real estate activity on the Island is happening right here in Campbell River. According to the Aug. 1, report from the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board, Campbell River sales increased by 87 per cent in the last year. “There are a number of projects underway in the Campbell River area, and it seems this construction activity is directly contributing to the growth in their housing market,” said board

president Gary Gray. “This is a good example of what economic drivers can do to the market.” Multiple Listing Service data for July shows housing sales activity across Vancouver Island was up 12 per cent compared to last year, while average sale prices remained relatively stable. Comparing July 2013 to July 2012, the average sale prices across six geographic areas saw: Campbell River remain virtually unchanged with average sales price listed at $296,789; Comox Valley up one per cent to $347,954; Nanaimo also went up one per cent to $362,918; Parksville/Qualicum prices remained relatively unchanged at $376,060; Port Alberni/West Coast increased by nine per

ter at Tuesday evening’s council meeting after the Mirror went to press. It’s been more than four months since the SPCA pulled its operations in Campbell River fol l ow i ng c ou nc i l’s decision to award the city’s pound contract to Coastal Animal Control. Craig Daniell, the SPCA’s chief executive officer, promised SPCA supporters at a community meeting in June that the SPCA would return to Campbell River and at the time, said the SPCA hoped to open an adoption centre by July 31.

Some dental offices refer to IV sedation as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sleep” which are both misleading - IV conscious sedation is designed to relax the patient at a light or moderate level and, in reality, you remain conscious during the procedure meaning you will understand and respond to requests from your dentist - although you may not remember because the drug typically used does two things, Dr. Kevin Lathangue 1. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of not being bothered by what’s going on. 2. The drugs used for IV sedation produce either partial or full memory loss (amnesia) for the period of time when the drug first kicks in until it wears off. As a result, time will appear to pass quickly and you will not recall much of what happened - this is likely the reason people believe they were “asleep” during the procedure. Typically, people seek out IV sedation when they are anxious about a procedure or the needle. Although IV sedation is not a pain killer - we can use EMLA cream to prevent the needle from hurting which creates a more comfortable experience. Finally, if you are a person who has postponed your dental treatment due to fear or anxiety - this might be the perfect solution to finally get your oral health back on track. Olympics ignores its own guiding principles

Actor George Takei has started a petition to have the Sochi Olympic Games moved from Russia to Canada. U.S. President Barack Obama has cancelled a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. While Obama’s reasons for cancelling the summit are many, one of them is Russia’s crackdown on civil rights…namely new laws that almost make homosexuality a crime. Takei, a well-known gay rights activist, has that as a specific reason for wanting the Olympics moved from that country. Foreign Affairs Minister has John Baird denounced Russia’s controversial new anti-gay law as hateful. Kudos to Baird, Takei and Obama for taking a stand. It’s time, however, that the International Olympic Committee

took a stand. Too often the powers-that-be hold their nose and look the other way when dealing with countries rife with human rights abuses. Or, they rationalize that in doing business with such countries, the abusers will see the folly of their ways and change. That simply doesn’t happen. When it comes to the Olympics, the IOC is the first to tout itself as a worldwide organization touting inclusiveness, etc. In fact, the second principle stated in the Olympic Charter reads: “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a

view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” So what does the International Olympic Committee have to say about Russia instituting homophobic laws? “As a sporting organization, what we can do is to continue to work to ensure that the Games can take place without discrimination against athletes, officials, spectators and the media. To that end, the IOC has received assurances from the highest level of government in Russia that the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games.” In other words, hold your nose and dive right in. – Black Press

Storm’s decline began when past owner packed it in

Editor Alistair Taylor’s article about the Storm and their plan to improve the image of the city is right on the money. After coming to Campbell River in 2002, we started to attend their games and became season ticket holders for several years. The decline began when Ed Kingston left because he knew how to treat the players and with a string of championships, as you know, players were falling all over themselves to come here. After a few seasons of mediocre play and questionable coaches, we gave up our tickets. All we asked was that the players give a decent effort, win or lose. The effort was not there on many nights and we have not been back since. And to think they had over 450 season ticket holders when the Keystone Cup was here in 2006? Another round of B.C. liquor reforms – hick!

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

The B.C. Liberal government is ordering up another round of liquor regulation changes, looking for ways to make life easier for businesses and customers without aggravating the health and social problems associated with alcohol. Discussions with B.C.’s 10,000 liquor licence holders have identified a few problems that should be fixed. Going into a consultation phase that runs to October, the government is looking for answers to a few obvious questions, such as why it takes a pub or bar up to a year to get a licence. Another question: why can a family with under-aged children go into a licensed restaurant for lunch, but can’t go to a pub and place the exact same food and drink order? This should be

allowed, perhaps until the traditional 5 p.m. “happy hour” when the pub reverts to adults-only. A couple of suggestions have come out of the healthy growth of B.C. wine, craft beer and distillery operations. Look for new licence opportunities for farmers’ markets to sell local beverages along with the produce and preserves. Letters inviting suggestions from existing licence holders have gone out, and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap will be meeting this fall with industry groups, local governments, police, health and social policy organizations and First Nations in the fall. A website will be put up in September so members of the public can have their say. Here’s my suggestion to start things

off. Recent incidents involving so-called “party buses” shone a light on this growing industry, The sudden death of a 16-year-old on a party bus outing in Surrey in February turned out not to be alcohol-related, but to no one’s surprise, open liquor was found aboard the bus. Open liquor isn’t allowed in any vehicle, but perhaps a new kind of special event licence could be created for party buses. They have been viewed mainly as part of the solution to impaired driving, and the situation isn’t much different from a supervised event on a boat. Here’s another suggestion. Gourmet cooking classes are becoming popular, with customers preparing and then

enjoying their meals. Why not licence these establishments, at least so people can bring their own wine for dinner? Both the B.C. Liberals and NDP have advocated for easing the archaic rules on inter-provincial trade in wine. B.C. lifted its restrictions on mail-order wine and has urged other provinces to follow suit. There are a couple of reasons why this Prohibition-era structure persists. Liquor sales are a cash cow for provincial governments, and every case of wine brought in from elsewhere is lost profit for the provincial wholesale monopoly. Then there is the local industry lobby that would rather not add to its competition. Continued on Page 9

developing its own wine industry. The B.C. government will no doubt be lobbied again to allow beer and wine sales in grocery and convenience stores. Our politicians show little interest in that, which is understandable. The B.C. Liberals don’t want to upset the private liquor stores they have nurtured for a decade, and the NDP would never risk annoying the government liquor store union. There are more creative ways to liberalize alcohol sales.

Fletcher: Media ‘drank it up’ Premier Christy Clark pressed this point at the recent premiers’ meeting in Ontario wine country, bringing in the maximum amount of B.C. wine allowed under Ontario rules and urging free trade in Canadian wine. The Toronto media drank it up, aghast that they were barred from ordering the latest Naramata Bench tipples directly. No movement so far from the Ontario government, in a province that has done well

as a separate company. “This is a very exciting time for Chameleon. We are looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities ahead, and building a bigger team here in Campbell River,” said Barbot. Broadview is planning to invest resources into building sales and proj-

Dust Mites, Dust Mite Feces, Skin Cells, Pet Dander, Molds, Fungi and Bacteria can all be found within a mattress — and the list goes on. It is recommended that mattresses be cleaned Jordan McLean every 6 months to control these allergens and dirt, which will then create a cleaner, healthier sleeping environment. Good Knight Mattress Cleaners uses a portable, environmentally safe, dry vacuum system that incorporates a UVC Light to eradicate all of the allergens in your mattress. We will come to your home, provide a test to check the level of contaminants and then proceed to clean the mattress, including your pillows. All you need to do is strip off the sheets and covers before we arrive so we can get right to work. Good Knight Mattress Cleaners is not a franchise. We’re a locally owned and operated company serving the Campbell River Region and the North End of Vancouver Island. We are insured and bonded.

MSP considers the main role of vitamin D to be the prevention of osteoporosis but will not pay for this preventive measure.Vitamin D is a marker Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND of inflammation and the main Naturopathic Physician reason I am recommending that most of my patients know their blood levels of vitamin D is to prevent many types of cancer including breast and prostate. However adequate levels of vitamin D will lower blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, prevent depression, help with insomnia and fatigue and of course prevent osteoporosis. I am recommending a level of 150nmol/L but most MD’s are happy with 80-90nmol/L. During pregnancy adequate levels of vitamin D may prevent Type I diabetes in children. Making sure children get vitamin D helps prevent colds and flus and ear infections.

The customer’s first thought is to keep it around the house, or garbage it.

Coming when called means that your dog comes into your space and allows confinement (leash being put on, hand on collar, going into crate, etc). In the previous column, you taught your dog to know her name. Now, say her name and trot a few steps away. As your dog comes to you say her name again and “come!”. Allow your dog the time to figure out to come into your space and then rest your fingertips on the collar at the Jane Neve & Arwen side of the neck. Make sure you take at least five seconds to play a little game, give your dog a shoulder scratch or deliver a treat because returning to you has to be a rewarding action for your dog. Avoid reaching out to grab. Just wait and your dog will come into your space. This also applies to greeting a new dog. Dogs don’t ask much of us; but coming into our space must be a safe thing for them to do - 100% of the time. Never, ever punish your dog for returning to you “too slowly”. That’s a betrayal most dogs don’t easily forgive. Teach your dog that coming into your space is safe and fun, then you will have a dog that turns on a dime to come back to you. Jane Neve is the owner, trainer and behavioural coach of Canine Conduct Training Solutions.

250-898-3173 Are reptiles good pets?

» Pet Store

Some of the worst summer tragedies involve pets that are left in vehicles in the sun with the windows partially or completely rolled up. Temperatures inside a car rapidly climb to more than 50’C and can cause death sometimes in as little as 10 minutes! Many people think that leaving a window open will keep their dog safe and cool, but studies show that an Dr. Peter open window makes no difference. The Woodward signs of heat stroke include: heavy panting, profuse salivation, lack of coordination, red gums, vomiting & diarrhea. What to do if you see a dog in a hot car- record information about the vehicle, alert the management of the business if it is parked in front of the store, call the police and stay with the dog until help arrives. If you need to leave your pet in a car for any period of time, please do the pet and yourself a favor and leave the pet at home. When traveling with your pet, call ahead to make sure the pet will be welcome at any hotels or homes where you intend to stay. Remember that sometimes the best solution for everyone is to make arrangements for someone to watch the pet in your home, or to bring the pet to a boarding facility, like the Sit and Stay Pet Resort & Spa.

With all the “media” attention that exotic reptiles are getting this week, we feel this is a great question! YES! Reptiles make great pets and they’re fairly easy to keep depending on species. Most are also good with kids who Sarah Kirk, Owner have pet allergies, they don’t smell “often” and are friendly enough for most kids or adults to handle every day! Some of the better pets are Leopard Gecko, Crested Gecko, Bearded Dragon, and Blue Tongue Skinks. Snakes are also great pets and easy to care for. Most of your reptiles will require a heat source or two, UVB lighting, water and food. Some eat daily, some eat less often but larger meals. Smell really depends on the type of food being fed, and the frequency of feeding. There are bulbs now made by Exo Terra that are beneficial in dealing with smell! It really gets no easier! Cost to set up depends on species, and long term needs. Come see us today, we carry many different reptiles, and all the products to set them up properly. Our staff is well trained on the care of ALL the reptiles in our store.

Aviation buffs won’t want to miss this Saturday’s airshow It’s flying in fast – the 2013 Comox Armed Forces Day and Air Show is just days away. Air Show day is this Saturday and residents and visitors in the Comox Valley are invited to join the men and women of 19 Wing, CFB Comox in celebrating 70 years of Canadian Air Force history. Organizers are expecting people from across Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland to descend on the Comox Valley for what promises to be an exciting, educational and fun day for the entire family. With child tickets priced at $10 and advance-sales adult prices at $20 ($25 on Air Show day), it is an affordable day out for families as well.

Recently, organizers learned that they can offer visitors even more excitement and value for money as they added Team Rocket, with their high-performance “Harmon Rocket II” airplanes and the graceful aerobatics of Anna Serbinenko with her “Super Decathlon” to the line up. These acts will join the Air Show’s headline aircraft; the CF-18 Demonstration Team, the Snowbirds, as well as the C-17 Globemaster transport plane and a Second World War B-25 Mitchell bomber. Gates open to the public at 8:30 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Early arrivals will be able to check out an impressive static aircraft display area and classic airplane fans will also be excited to know

that close to 50 privately owned, unique and vintage aircraft will be on display at the “Fly-In” area. The flying acts get started at 10:15 a.m. and go till 3:45 p.m. The entertainment won’t stop there though. The Royal Canadian Air Force’s “Jetstream” band will play till 5 p.m. when the gates close. Visitors are highly encouraged to walk, bike or take BC Transit’s Air Show service which will be operating from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Air Show via Comox Mall will start at Cliffe and 4th Avenue. A second route, the Air Show Park & Ride, will collect passengers at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds and North Island College. With traffic conges-

One of the things that people that people forget when calculating retirement expenses is that cars still wear out, as do roofs and Peter Garat Certified Financial Planner hot water tanks. Repairs and maintenance never stop. Because of this you’ll need emergency funds set aside just for the appliances that die, and the basements that flood. To best manage these “surprise” costs in retirement, Financial Planners often utilize a strategy called a “meltdown”. Building a non-registered savings account this way can minimize the tax bite when you need extra money.

What is Long Term Care Insurance?

Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a new puppy. Don’t relax once he joins your family, your work has barely just begun!

With an aging population and people surviving health events that leave them dependent on caregivers, there is a huge demand for in-home care and beds in care facilities. If you have Darlene Garat a cash surplus, getting the Financial Advisor care or bed that you need is easy. Since most people don’t have the $1000’s it costs each month for this high level of caregiving, the industry developed Long Term Care insurance (LTD). These insurance contracts allow you to have the money you need when you need it. Purchased while you are still relatively young and healthy it can be affordable, and is an important part of a secure financial plan.

Optimum age for your new addition should be anywhere between 8 weeks (at the absolute youngest) to 11 weeks of age. Don’t let a “breeder” insist you take a puppy any younger, they desperately need to remain with the mother and littermates to learn life skills that can only be learned in that situation. It is imperative that you begin socializing your pup, you have a very small window of opportunity to expose him to as many different things as possible. Cathy Merrithew By 3 months of age, your puppy should have met at least 100 different people. Be sure this includes women, men, teenagers and children. This is very easy to do, make the time now to introduce your puppy by taking him with you to the bank, pet store, friends’ homes, drive thrus, grooming shop, pick one or two to visit EVERY day. Bring a pocketful of kibble or treats, ask people to offer your puppy a treat, and help your puppy learn that people = treats. Be a responsible dog owner and be sure to also have clean up bags with you in case nature calls during a visit. Avoid visiting the dog park until your puppy has met lots of different friendly dogs, it only takes one dog that is not tolerant of puppies to bowl yours over and instantly make him unsure of other dogs. Bite inhibition is the single most important quality a dog needs to learn. Time window for developing a “soft mouth” begins to close at 4 1/2 months of age. To be sure your well socialized puppy stays well socialized during adolescence and adulthood, he needs to meet unfamiliar people every day.

known for the famous Cable Cookhouse, the bus continues to Kelsey Bay, which was once a bustling BC ferry terminal. Here, guide and passengers will board the Tenacious III to begin their exploration of this section of Johnstone Strait. First stop is Hardwicke Island, where the Ben-

dickson Logging Company thrived for several decades, and where bunkhouses from the Yorke Island fort were floated over and used as part of the logging camp. The original jail from Yorke Island can be seen from the bay. It once housed Hardwicke Island’s primary school teacher and has now

been converted into a summer home. From Hardwicke, the boat heads north, passing the east side of Yorke Island and enters into the beautiful Port Neville Inlet To reserve a spot, call 250-287-3103. The cost is $130 and includes hot and cold beverages and a light picnic lunch.

Museum trip heads north

The Museum at Campbell River’s summer boat tours are designed to get people out on the water and visit areas they normally may not be able to explore, while learning about local history. In August, the museum is again offering a trip to the north – a boat cruise out of Kelsey Bay that will take passengers over to Hardwicke Island, around Yorke Island and up to Port Neville. The tour departs on Aug. 25, at 9:30 a.m. Discovery Marine Safaris’ bus takes passengers from Campbell River to Kelsey Bay and, along the way, the museum interpreter will discuss places of historic interest such as Menzies Bay – named after Captain Vancouver’s botanist, Archibald Menzies – Brown’s Bay Marina and Resort – built in 1954 – and Robert’s Lake Resort, still operated by a member of the Duncan family of Sayward. Helen Mary Little June 16, 1931August 7, 2013

Helen Mary Little was born in Vancouver, BC on June 16, 1931 and sadly left us on August 7, 2013 at the age of 82. Mom loved to garden, cook, read and share a laugh over coffee. She was a loving person who touched the hearts of all who knew her. A proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who was the happiest when the family was all together. She accepted everyone for who they were, made sure you knew it was ok to be different. Mom was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1962, her son Kelly in 2008 and her daughter Jacky in May of this year. She will be sadly missed by her children Lynette (Bob), Bill (Karen), Mary (Grant), and Lenora as well as 14 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. She was the pillar of our family and will be missed deeply and forever in our hearts.

Terry Nielsen

:PVS $PNNVOJUZ :PVS $MBTTJmFET

June 25, 1965 to July 27, 2013 Terry is survived by loving wife, Tanya Harmon, stepsons Jonathan and Cody, father Butch Nielsen and his partner Hilary, mother Suzan Clancy, sister Kelly Nielsen, brother and sister, Kelly James and Keshia Clancy, and nephew Keifer. Terry was born in Vancouver and grew up in Cordova Bay, Victoria, attending Claremont Senior Secondary and, later, the University of Victoria to receive a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Biology and Biochemistry. He entered the field of aquaculture, and had increasing managerial responsibility within leading BC salmon aquaculture companies, out of Tofino. Subsequently, Terry worked for the Provincial Government as a Biologist, assisting finfish aquaculture operations to achieve compliance with licensing requirements, and more recently involved with freshwater fisheries. He was a consistent and passionate advocate of fish farming as an essential alternative to wild stock fishing. Outside of work, Terry loved surfing the breaks around Tofino, and was a gifted and avid runner. He gave tremendously of himself to his local and global communities. Whether it was holding the Canadian government’s feet to the flames of their commitments to international development, active engagement with local Alcoholics Anonymous groups, involvement with the Comox Valley Road Running club, or his key role in Strathcona Sunrise Rotary in the Comox Valley, culminating with his service as President from 2012 to 2013, he brought with him a rich sense of humour, passion, energy, no-nonsense pragmatism and leadership that manifested his tireless commitment to making the world a better place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Upper Gazebo of Marina Park, Comox on August 24, 2013 at 2pm. In keeping with Terry’s own principles and expressed wishes, it is requested that flowers not be gifted. For those wishing to remember and perpetuate Terry’s legacy, donations to either the Kenya Education Endowment Fund (KEEF) or the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise would be welcomed with gratitude. Donations to KEEF may be made at http://www.canadahelps. org/GivingPages/GivingPage.aspx?gpID=29270 (tax receipts provided). Please direct donations for the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise to PO Box 3576, Courtenay, BC V9N 6Z8 (no tax receipts).

VIHA names new CEO

After an exhaustive search process, Dr. Brendan Carr has been named as the new President and CEO for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. According to Board Chair Don Hubbard, “The board is thrilled to have Dr. Carr at the helm of our organization. I have full confidence that Dr. Carr possesses the experience and personal suitability that will allow our organization to ensure that the health and care needs of citizens and the fiscal health or our organization are met now and well into the future. Dr. Carr is an

accomplished leader with a track record of success,” said Hubbard. Dr. Carr has been serving as acting CEO since former president and CEO Howard Waldner retired in May, and will assume this new role immediately. Dr. Carr joined Vancouver Island Health last year as the executive vice president and chief medical officer. Prior to joining the health authority, Dr. Carr served as vice president of medicine with the Capital District Health Authority in Halifax and as an assistant professor with Dalhousie

University. Dr. Carr holds a Doctor of Medicine and a Masters in Business Administration. He is a skilled Emergency Room Physician and advocate for transformation in health care. “The Vancouver Island Health Authority is an outstanding organization with a positive reputation across the country and around the world,” Dr. Carr said. “Improving the quality of care and examining how we can better integrate care across the health system is a top priority as we move forward.”

Golden and silver plates for local rugby teens R u g b y C a n a d a’s Nat i o n a l Fe s t i v a l wrapped up at the University of British Columbia last Sunday after five days of amazing rugby with more than 1,000 athletes from across the country competing from U14 to U18. Campbell River Athletic Association’s own Jackson Locker, Georgia Bellamy and Kristine Osachuk represented well with a Silver Plate finish for Locker’s B.C. U17 in the competitive U18 division, fourth place for Osachuk’s gutsy B.C. Blue U16 team, and a Gold Medal National Championship for Bellamy’s B.C. Gold U16 team. Locker and Bellamy’s sides finished the round robin and semifinals with 4-0 records and both played capable Ontario teams in the finals. On the Men’s U18 field the score of 27-7 for Ontario didn’t reflect the intensity of play. “The culture and comradrerie that we built inside our team was probably the best team environment I’ve ever been a part of,” Locker said. “That’s not easy because everyone was from different parts of the province but we all clicked and got along like a team that had been together for a full season.” In the U16 Women’s match the B.C. Gold was able to hold

Riverite medals at Canada Summer Games

Team BC flagbearer Ashley Osachuk of Campbell River made it all the way to the wrestling finals at the summer national games. She walked away with silver after losing her bout against Ontario’s

Allison Julie Carrow, in her first Canada Games experience. “I feel good. Silver’s better than nothing and I worked hard for it,” said Osachuk. “I wrestled tough competitors from all over Canada, so to be

second in the country is an amazing feeling. All in all it’s been a memorable experience; I got to carry the flag into the Opening Ceremonies, compete in a sport I love and make long-lasting friendships.”

Ontario team in this tournament, and we responded phenomenally,” said B.C.’s U16 Women’s head coach, Jen Ross. “Looking at the bigger picture here, we see high caliber players coming up from 13 to 16 years old - it’s a great reflection of what all

the provinces are trying to do and hopefully it will continue to build from here.” Locker, Osachuk and Bellamy are very thankful to the Campbell River Athletic Association and their coaches for the support in achieving these successes.

Night of destruction this Saturday at Saratoga After three rounds last Saturday, #187 Jack Topliss out drifted #26 Evan Johnson to win the fourth drifting event at Saratoga Speedway. The bomber cars, dwarf cars and the I.M.C.A modifieds also were on the card on Saturday. Other commitments brought the I.M.C.A modified field to only three on Saturday. That opened the door for #88 Troy Tarbuck, who had a great night, winning the first heat

it all figured out, winning the reverse heat, and leading 25 of 30 laps to take his second straight main event win. The dwarf cars made their last appearance of the season on Saturday, bringing out 11 cars. To kick things off for the dwarf cars, #15 Chris Halliday took the first heat, with the reverse heat going to #11 Mike Meeres. Meeres continued that momentum into the 35 lap main event, taking the lead on lap 10 and not looking back from there, holing off a hard charging Halliday to win his fourth main event of the year at Sara-

toga Speedway. Extra laps This coming weekend marks the return of the crash to pass boat race as well as the Big Rig Highway Thunder to the speedway. Big Rigs from all across the Island will show off their powerful trucks. These huge logging trucks will take part in normal oval track racing, along with the crash to pass cars, hornets, roadrunners and figure 8s. The night will be sponsored by Bailey Western Star Trucks.

The following weekend, August 24, marks the third appearance of the Wilroc Lite cars. This class is the fastest on the Island, averaging lap times of 14-15 seconds which is almost a full second faster than the next fastest class. The Island mini stocks will also return to Saratoga that night, accompanied by the bomber cars, I.M.C.A modifieds and the championship night for the motorcycles, which is all sponsored by Brian McLean Tyee Chevrolet. It’s all leading up to the final day of racing for the season on Sat., Sept. 14.
