CPR expands safety policy after Quebec tragedy River battle hitting the Columbia on Aug. 24 ..............................17
Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net It has been one month since the tragedy in Lac-Megantic, Que., that took the lives of 47 people. A train derailed and exploded. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, and CP Rail is keeping a close
eye on their operations and making sure their safety policies are up to date. “The safe operation of Canadian Pacific and ensuring the safety of our employees and the communities through which we operate, like Golden, remains the focus for CP, and this will never change,” said Ed Greenberg, spokesperson for CP Rail. Since the derailment in Quebec, CP has
revisited their rules and regulations. “The recent situation gave us a chance to thoroughly review our safety procedures, as we do on an ongoing basis. The result was that on July 12, we strengthened our operating procedures in some key areas that were identified from what occurred.” Continued on page 4

Booked pretty much solid with weddings throughout the summer, this event on Aug. 30 will be your only chance to spend an evening at Canada’s most elevated dining experience. “It’s going to be a four-course meal paired with the beer...Hopefully it will be a fantastic evening for the sunset as well,” said Marcus Molfenter. a little different for their guests. “It gives us a different clientele, and beer is pretty inviting for the summer time.” Alexander Keith’s brews will include two new Hop Ales, just introduced by the brewery this summer - Hallertauer Hop Ale and Cascade Hop Ale. The four-course meal will feature fresh, seasonal ingredients chosen to compliment the diverse selection of Keith’s products. Tickets are presale only, and $85, or $75 for designated drivers. There are 90 tickets available, and they include the gondola ride, tax, and gratuity. “I expect it to sell out, especially since it’s the Friday of the long weekend,” said Molfenter. Now is your chance to help the community to recognize the people who make Golden what it is. Nominations are open for the Bowle-Evans Award, which honours community volunteers in the mould and memory of Peter Bowle-Evans. Bowle-Evans provided leadership and vision in the creation of the road up Mount 7, and the development of the launch site. He was tireless in fundraising and building community support for this project, attracting volunteers ranging from hang gliders and road builders to local and provincial political leaders. Without the development of this initial infrastructure, there would be no bike trails on Mount 7, and no viewpoint for those of us who are not brave enough to fly from the launch, which has made Golden a global destination for paragliding. This award, which started in 2008 and is from Golden Area Initiatives, is presented at the Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Awards each year. Eligible nominees include volunteers with not-for-profit organizations of Kicking Horse Country (both Golden and Area A), who serve the community through the implementation of innovative ideas and approaches in response to community challenges and opportunities. This award is intended to honour social innovators who are developing new ideas in order to address complex social and community issues that help the community continue to be a great place to live. Examples of innovative approaches to community development activities may include: developing creative approaches to programs and activities, fostering community engagement and community spirit, or developing community resources and infrastructure. Previous recipients of the award include: Roger Ross for his contributions to the Golden and District Golf Club; Merle and Mike McKnight for their contributions to the development of the Whitetooth Ski Area; Evelyn Keenleyside for her ongoing work in the social service sector; and Bill Usher for his ongoing work for arts and culture. Nomination forms can be found online at www.goldenbritishcolumbia.com, or in print at the Golden Star office. Please submit completed forms with a “reason for nomination” paragraph by Sept. 16 to the Golden Area Initiatives office or to dwheelhouse@goldenbritishcolumbia.com.

Women’s centre hosts Saluting Summer Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar. net On Friday Aug. 30 take a stroll through the Spirit Square on your lunch break, and check out the Golden Women’s Resource Centre’s Saluting Summer Fundraiser. The fundraiser, which will hopefully become an annual event, runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and
will have some family fun and entertainment. “The whole event will be in partnership with Victim Services and the Golden Food Bank,” said Mel Meyers, executive director of the women’s centre. The funds raised will go towards keeping the women’s centre programming going, especially safe homes, outreach, and emergency fund-
ing for women who have to leave home. “We’re going to have live music from some local performers, most of them are students who are going into Grade 12,” said Jordan Trotter, the centre’s summer student. “And there’s going to be an art show. People will be able to donate their art and then there will be a silent auction for all of the pieces. All
those donations will go to the women’s centre.” On top of that the food bank will be organizing some carnival games for the kids. There will be a barbecue, and a raffle with some special prizes including a SGI phone. “It’s a balloon raffle. So they’ve written a number on a balloon that you can buy, and if you’re number is drawn you
win a prize. And you get to have a balloon all day,” said Meyers. The event will be the first unveiling of the new women’s centre T-shirts, which will also be on sale. For more information, go to www. goldenwomencentre.ca.

Behind the Wheel Golden’s watering restrictions have been in place since 2011, and are in effect year round. Star Photo
Golden water restrictions in effect Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net Ever since 2011, the Town of Golden has had year round watering restrictions, however there are many homeowners who are unaware of them. “For the most part people are fairly compliant of the restrictions, but it’s an ongoing education process,” said Chris Cochran, manager of operations for the Town of Golden. The Water System Rates and Regulations Bylaw, passed in 2011, limits the watering of lawns and gardens to every second day. Homes with even numbered addresses may water on even numbered days, and homes with odd numbered addresses may
water on odd numbered days. On the allotted days, people may water between the hours of 4 and 10 a.m., and 7 and 10 p.m. If the home has an automated irrigation system, watering must be between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m., and only on the permitted odd or even days. The exception to this rule is hand held watering, which means at any time you are permitted to water your garden or lawn with a hand held container, or a hose with a springloaded shutoff nozzle. “There’s also an exception if you’re establishing new grass seed or turf,” said Cochran. The bylaw states, “If a water user has placed new sod on the premises, has a newly
seeded lawn, or otherwise needs to use water outside the restriction to foster similar new growth or landscaping, the water user may apply to the Manager of Operations for a Watering Variance Permit to water outside the restrictions.” The Manager of Operations will consider the request, and if granted, the water user may water outside of the restrictions for up to 21 days. These restrictions are in place both to conserve water, primarily for fire storage, but also to put less strain on the Town’s infrastructure, and keep the pumping costs as low as possible. To see the Water Systems Rates and Regulations Bylaw in its entirety, go to www.golden.ca.
Haven’t You Got Anything Better To Do?
“Haven’t you got anything better to do?” This was a question that I was asked often during my service as a constable in traffic law enforcement. I’m sure some of the drivers were just trying to needle me a bit in return for the ticket but most of them appeared to feel that sliding through a stop sign or doing a few kilometers per hour over the speed limit was trivial and should be ignored. When you disobey the traffic rules over and over again and nothing bad happens it is easy to believe that there is no risk in those actions. If there is no risk then it is acceptable behaviour and may be considered normal. Some drivers leave it at that and some push their boundaries until they have pushed too far. The result in both cases is an increased risk of collision. Spending any amount of time in traffic law enforcement soon teaches you that what drivers often consider to be a trivial violation will eventually result in some horrendous consequences. You experience this directly with every serious collision that you are called on to investigate. There is no doubt in my mind that this experience caused me to write a ticket when the driver was expecting a warning. My job was to change the behaviour of the motoring public to conform to the traffic rules. I used many tools to attempt this including a web site, newspaper articles, radio spots, group talks and yes, warnings and tickets. After this if you still chose to go your own way then my response to this query should be “No, I’ve already tried by other means and haven’t gotten through to you. Sign here please.” The author is a retired constable with many years of traffic law enforcement experience. To comment or learn more please visit www.drivesmartbc.ca.

Golden Festival Society planning full day of local music Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net An old society has just been revamped, and is working hard to bring a brand new festival to Golden next year. “I was going to do
my own thing anyways, then I found out there was already a society formed...So I just took it over,” said Mike Pecora. The Golden Festival Society is in the planning stages of bringing a full-day music

I’m not worried about that part of it,” he said. “And we could bring in service groups, such as the Gentlemen’s Club, to organize the ball tournament.” Although still in its early stages of planning, the society is considering the Father’s Day weekend for the festival’s date because there is already an annual soccer tournament. Adding the musical element would compliment it nicely. When Pecora first brought this idea
about earlier in the summer, community members jumped on board. There is already a board of directors in place, each with their own task in the planning process. “It seems like a huge task, but we definitely have the right team in place,” said Pecora. “They’re all go-getters, there’s no naysayers. These are all people who are saying ‘let’s make it happen,’ not, ‘let’s see if we can make it happen.’ That’s the first key.” Nothing quite like this has been done in Golden. There is a Golden Sound Festival coming up next month in Parson, which is bringing together local acts and out of town headliners. And there are

CP Rail trains that pass through Golden operate with a set of General Operating Instructions to maintain public safety. Star Photo
Operational procedures strengthened
Continued from page 1
Given the potential destruction, the rail industry is heavily regulated. CP employees have a set of General Operating Instructions that outline specific procedures to ensure the safe operation of their equipment. Their strengthened procedures are an enhancement of the General Operation Instructions. The main revisions to the policy are: -If it is necessary to leave a train unattended outside a terminal or yard, the locomotive will now be locked. This occurred already in some high-risk locations, but it will now be formally applied across the network. CP does not operate
with one-person crews. -They have strengthened train brake-setting procedures, which meet or exceed all regulations regarding brake setting. -Going forward, all trains with tank cars containing regulated commodities will not be left unattended on main line tracks. “For CP we felt implementing additional safety measures at this time was a prudent step to take,” said Greenberg. “Our railway continually reviews practices and procedures to identify ways to further strengthen operating safety. CP continues to meet or exceed all federal operating and safety regulations and rules.”

Celebrating Community Spirit - Open Spaces On the evening of June 18, 35 residents of Golden and Area A came together to discuss “Celebrating Community Spirit – One Idea at a Time.” This was a grassroots initiative to bring residents to a community table to talk about community. The objective of the evening was to share what we love about our community!

As an opportunity to further the discussion toward the future a grassroots vision, participants were asked to identify: 1. 2. 3.
What they would love their community to be. What they would love their community to have. What they would love their community to do.
These discussions were dynamic and supportive. The information below is a summary of the evening’s discussions. As you read the comments you will identify for yourself that some of these opportunities are currently underway in Golden and Area A. Others are interesting and need further discussion.

The Celebrating Community Spirit evening was a very engaging evening that allowed everyone the chance to present their personal vision for our community and more importantly, to gain a better perspective on our friends and neighbour’s visions. The strength of the meeting was the many positive initiatives proposed and the engagement of the attendees. The participants ranged from a newly married couple that just moved here to long-time residents that have had families in the area for generations. The ability of regular people to have their visions and dreams heard in an atmosphere free of lobbying any particular point of view is an invaluable tool. The challenge now is to create the atmosphere to keep “regular people” engaged and effect real changes that enhance our community. I eagerly await the continuation of the process. - Terry Hickey

Star OPINION
Neighbourly behaviour What makes a good neighbour? Some people think it takes someone who helps you out when you’re in need, others think that minding one’s own business is enough to make a good neighbour. It is important to be as courteous as possible to everyone around you, but when we live in such close - I SURMISE proximity to one another, By Jessica Schwitek problems inevitably crop up. And when they do, to be a good neighbour, it is important to address those problems head on. Speak to your neighbours directly, and give them a chance to either clarify a misunderstanding, or rectify the situation. Before you call the police to file a complaint about your noisy neighbour, knock on their door and politely ask them if they don’t mind keeping it down. Because if you’re not careful, you may end up in your own “Stereo Wars” with your speakers facing the wall, each turning your music up louder and louder until one of you can’t stand it anymore (like a certain newspaper publisher I know). I know that it can be intimidating to confront a person who is doing something you believe to be inappropriate. But it is far better to face these problems head on, rather than trying to shame or force them into changing their behaviour. Golden’s Fire Chief was accused of not respecting the Town’s watering restrictions. Should he have been given the opportunity to clarify or rectify the situation before the accusation was made public? He was not given the opportunity to say that he does abide by the municipality’s watering restrictions, and that he respects the community and its laws. Life is full of misunderstandings. Maybe there was a lack of knowledge about what the watering restrictions really are. Maybe there was some confusion as to who really lives where, with several fire department vehicles being parked in several officers’ homes. Regardless of what was going on, everything could have been cleared up by simply having a face to face conversation. The Fire Chief dedicates his time to the community of Golden, making sure someone will be there to help out whomever is in need. And he, like all good neighbours, deserved the benefit of the doubt.
Invasive Weeds Dear editor, For several years, the Community Weed Program has striven to control the invasive weed population in Golden, as well as to inform those who live here about the threat. Sometimes, looking out at the beautiful mountains, the lush wetlands, or the sprawling forests, it is difficult to imagine that anything as small as a flower could threaten this land. Yet invasive weeds are second only to habitat loss when it come to endangering biodiversity. Then again, after spending several hours pulling a large site, it can seem as though this enemy can never be overcome. This too is an false impression: the battle is far from lost.
Every summer, the weed co-ordinators revisit many of the sites from the previous years. And with very few exceptions, the site is either smaller, or less densely infested, or sometimes, to our great joy, completely free of invasive weeds. This is the thought we hold in the forefront of our mind as we bike down a road with ditches full of knapweed, or pause for a drink and notice a forest of burdock. This war is not over - some battles we are fighting are bitter, yes, but we will prevail. Last Thursday, the 8th, was a fantastic demonstration of this: twenty people took time out of their days to come out to a weed pull held at the rodeo grounds/ dirt bike track area. They tackled burdock, knapweed, blueburr and mullien, and cleared a huge area. Perhaps the best part of this, better even than the huge impact on
Dialyses Move To the editor, Having just read the letter in the Star, I am very upset with the third to the last paragraph in which it said, “of course it impacts us here in Golden as well, although not as directly because we don’t have anybody local using it right now but we are in the service area.” It is obviously the mistake of the reporter for not
the invasive weeds at the site, is the collaboration of the different groups. In addition to Wildsight volunteers, people from Mountain Motor Sports and other dirt-bikers, as well as people from the Golden Light Horse Club, came out to help in this fight. So THANK YOU - to those who came out and volunteered, and to all those who take time to clear your garden, or spread the word. It is because of people like you that this program is worthwhile, and the battle against invasive weeds will be won. And that is because this beautiful place we live in - full of unique and fantastic birds, fish, animals, and plants - is well worth fighting for. Sincerely, The Invasive Weed Co-ordinators

Ask all the people who had to pack up and leave the home and town they love so much. Both my kids lived within two km away from me and now I am 545 km away, not by choice. I only came to Lethbridge to visit my brother in March of 2012 when I suffered a major heart attack that my kidney did not survive, and I had to be put on dialysis. New Zealand’s Queen of the Loops is playing Jita’s Cafe Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net The lady they call the Queen of Loops will be treating the audience to her unique performance at Jita’s Cafe on Aug. 15. Mihirangi creates her own band sound live in front of her audience, utilizing a loop pedal. The key to her music is the layering of her vocal sounds. From the foundation of earth-shaking bass lines to intricately layered harmonies, rhythmic “ska” chops, sensuous jazzy riffs and beat boxing - it’s all done with the power of her voice, an incredible vocal range and an exceptional talent for timing, rhythm and dynamic tonality. Singing in both Te Reo Maori and English, a multi-instrumentalist, Mihirangi also plays percussion, keyboards, guitar and Tonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments). Once you experience Mihirangi’s empowering live loop show, you’ll be hooked into her organic earthy vice and captivated by her stunning vocal performance. It’s easy to see why they call her The Queen of Loops. She has had an expansive journey, having toured for seven years, five times around the globe, and performing at more than 50 international festivals. In 2012 Mihirangi was a finalist in New Zealand’s Got Talent, wowing the judges and the country with her incredible skills. With her utterly unique musical vision and the cross-cultural harmony Mihirangi is an artist that has people sitting up, listening and taking notice for all the right reasons. The show starts at 7 p.m., tickets are available for $25 at Jita’s and at Bizarre Entertainment.

Indie band Mushy Callahan coming to the Rockwater Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net The Edge 102.1’s Indie Band of the Month, Mushy Callahan, is coming to Golden for a show at the Rockwater Grill and Bar on Aug. 21. Meaningful lyrics, powerful multi-vocal harmonies, beefy bass riffs, arena-quality guitar solos, and layered musical touches are all characteristic of the classic rock band, Mushy Callahan. This band, made up of four very talented brothers, has already been awarded many honours, including winning The Edge 102.1 indie band of the month. They have also made an appearance at Edgefest 2012 along big names such as The Sheepdogs, Silversun Pickups, Billy Talent, and Yukon Blonde. Their video “Shot Down” also debuted in the top of the
Aux.TV charts. As 102.1 The Edge DJ Dave “Bookie” Bookman described them of having, “A real passion – with a real technical prowess.” Part of the band’s distinctive sound comes from blending different voices and instruments. Their voices support one another in perfect harmony, likely due to the fact that they have been making music together since they were children. The musicians in Mushy Callahan are all Alberta Natives who moved to Toronto. Thus far, they have released their debut EP entitled “Man On The Run,” which is an incredible mix of classic and indie rock, a unique flavour of music that they have become known for. To hear some of their music go to mushycallahan.com.

Cuban ensemble and local accordion champion playing show at Rec Plex Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net A group of famous Cuban musicians are making their way to Golden for one night only for a special performance at the Mount 7 Rec Plex. El Grupo Cubano was conceived in 1999 by talented brothers Rosel and Yordanis Lamoru, who were later joined by singer/bassist Julio Avila Gainza. Known as Brisas del Palmar in 2002, the group gained popularity and were awarded a Best Trio nod for all of Latin America. They are credited with reviving some of Cuba’s musical legacy, such as the traditional bolero, son, and guaracha. They have now evolved into a group of seven, and their music is featured daily on Cuban National Radio. These charismatic musical ambassadors of Cuba captivate audiences from two years old, to 92 years young, and were even given the honour of performing for Pope Benedict. The group brings together a diverse offering of instruments including some very special guitars, a stand up bass, congas, bongos, claves, and also some unrivalled harmonious cappella singing. Even if they had no instruments along at all, they could still entertain audiences for hours. For the Rec Plex performance they will also be joined by local B.C. accordion champion Bill Helmer, who resides in the Blaeberry. He is serving as the group’s regional co-ordinator, and will play along with a few tunes on his squeeze box. The Rec Plex performance, on Aug. 26, begins at 7 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $24 for adults, $18 for students and seniors, and free for children 12 and under.

Kla-How-Ya River Battle returns Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net The Columbia River is about to become the battlegrounds of the second annual Kla-How-Ya River Battle. The Gentlemen’s Leisure Club of Golden is bringing back the popular river battle on Saturday Aug. 24, where participants race down the river on canoes or homemade rafts. “It was an old event that was done back in the ‘70s I think,” said Gentlemen’s Club member Eric Prasloski. “We decided this was something we should really do.” Last year the event was paired with the Fall Faire in September, and had about 25 participants with eight canoes and two rafts. This year the club is hoping it
will be even bigger. “We’re hoping we can double it this year,” said Prasloski. “Ideally I would love to see the whole river filled with rafts, and for it to be a huge community event. But it takes time to build it up to that.” All watercrafts, homemade or not, must be non motorized and tested to float. Participants must wear lifejackets, helmets are recommended, and each boat is required to have a rope and bail bucket. The race starts at the Nicholson Bridge, and ends near the airport where there will be a barbecue for the participants and the spectators. The race is roughly 11 kilometres, which can take anywhere from 57 minutes (the fastest time last year), to just over two hours (the slow-
est time last year). “It’s pretty cool to see the homemade rafts. But if you’re not into it, or you don’t have time, just grab your canoe, or grab your neighbour’s canoe, and come on out,” said Prosloski. The cost to participate is $15 per person, which includes the barbecue at the end. Then the Riverhouse will be hosting an after party, starting at 6 p.m. The race starts at 10:30, but participants have to be there at 10 a.m. for a watercraft inspection. Early registration (which can be done at riverbattle@ gmail.com), is highly recommended, but teams can register up until 10 a.m. on the day of the race. IT WOULD TAKE A 20 TONNE BEAVER TO BUILD A DAM THE SIZE OF REVELSTOKE. REVELSTOKE DAM. IT’S THAT BIG.
In between a jam packed schedule of bands throughout the summer, the Rockwater Grill and Bar is bringing in a comedian for a performance on Monday Aug. 19. Brett Martin, a rising star on the Canadian comedy scene, is beginning to become a familiar face. He has toured relentlessly across the country, and recently shot his first national television special on CTV’s Comedy Now. While his conversational style puts crowds at ease, his unique blend of goofiness and biting insight keeps them on their toes. He first hit the comedy stage in Calgary, and not long afterwards he became a working comedian, honing his skills on the road throughout Western Canada.
He eventually made his way to Vancouver, with a few stops in Toronto and Montreal, and worked his way up to becoming one of Canada’s busiest acts. He has headlined at Yuk Yuks clubs across the country, as well as colleges, theatres, festivals, casinos, and corporate performances. He has made multiple TV appearances, and has recorded three sets for XM Radio. His style is perfect in the environment where every nuance and idea can be digested, yet he’s versatile enough to grab the surliest of crowds. With an eye and mouth for things bigger than just his own world, his comedy tackles premises that leave you thinking, laughing, and wondering when you’ll get a chance to see him again. The comedy show is $10 at the door.

Golden Moments: Two teachers grew with the community Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net Two of the community's teachers, who have watched the youth of Golden grow up over the years, decided to make this their home 49 years ago. Eleanor and Jim Nelson, originally from further down the valley in Cranbrook and Kimberley, came to Golden for a job. "We came here for one year, and then I was going to take her some place nice. And then Golden became nice, and we just grew with the community," said Jim. Between the two of them, the Nelsons worked at Lady Grey Elementary, Alexander Park Elementary, and Nicholson Elementary. Eleanor taught Grade 1, and Jim spent much of his career as a principal. "I really enjoyed them, I enjoyed that age," said Eleanor. "I've run into a few of the ones that I had when I first got here, and now they're grandmothers. That makes us feel pretty old." Jim, having worked with older students, loves running into his former pupils. Yet he often wonders if they hold onto the good memories, or if they only remember him as a disciplinarian. "When you're speaking with a former student out in the town in a social situation, and he is talking about how lethal his hands are since coming out of the armed forces, you have to wonder where the conversation is going," said Jim, laughing as he remembered the conversation. "They treat us very well, they're always very friendly." Back in the day, Jim also had to find odd jobs during the summer when the teach-
ing pay cheques stopped for a couple months. He found himself working for the Town for a short time. "I had lots of fun jobs… I worked for the Town one summer. When we saw all the workers the next year and they'd say they missed me. When I asked why they'd say 'usually after you finished working for us in the summertime we'd spend the whole winter cleaning up all the messes you made.' I gave them plenty to do," said Jim. The Nelsons were also very involved in the sports community in Golden. The entire family are avid golfers, and over the years they have also been involved in curling, cross country skiing, and hockey, including Jim's time with the Golden Rockets oldtimers team. When they retired, they devoted more of their time to their hobbies. "She decided it was time to devote more to her golf career. And I was going to stay working because I really enjoyed the job, the parents and the kids," said Jim. "Then I thought about her golf game, and how much it was improving. Hers went up, and mine went steadily down. Now I'm just more of a caddy for her." "He didn't want to be going to work every morning while I was heading out to the golf course," said Eleanor. Now, having been retired for many years, the Nelsons spend their time enjoying what Golden has to offer, before heading down south to escape the winters. "We travel south as soon as the snow flies and I have to shovel the driveway. Each year I set it less and less. It used to be seven times, I would shovel the driveway sev-

Jessica Schwitek/Star Photo en times before we would leave… Now it's down to two or three times," said Jim. They always make it back for Christmas though, because their kids and grandkids love to visit them here in Golden. Even though they no longer have ties in the community (their three kids have all
moved on), they have no intention of leaving until they have to. "We won't move… at least until we're too old to golf and move around. Then we expect to move into our kids' house and they can look after us. I don't know if that will work out or not," said Jim.

Golden’s oldest homes tell stories of the first families in town
- Turning Back the Pages By Colleen Palumbo
We are fortunate to have so many old homes in Golden. In fact the museum has a list of about 60 homes that either are or will soon be 100 years old. Many of the homes have had extensive renovations made to them with little regard to keeping the original architectural design. The old Kimpton House at 920 North 10th Ave.,(between the greenhouse and snowmobile/quad rental shops) has however managed to maintain moist of its original exterior appearance. It has had a few windows changed out and a wheelchair ramp added but other than
that it’s pretty good. Daniel Kimpton was born in South Roxton, Quebec, on October 25, 1870, and in 1889 he moved to Donald where his brother Rufus was managing a flourishing general store. Daniel was quick to learn and worked at many different jobs throughout the valley before he moved to Golden in 1899. During those early years Dan spent a great deal of time mining in the area. Mary Lambert was born in Ayr, Ontario, on April 11, 1876 and first came to BC in 1898, settling in Athalmer where she worked as a school teacher. She returned to her home in Ontario for a short time and, upon her return to this area, married Dan in Revelstoke on June 28, 1905. The couple returned to Golden where they resided until Mary’s death in 1945. In the spring of 1908, work on the Kimpton’s new house began and by the end of June of that year, the family
was able to move in. The general contractor on the house was long-time resident and miner Walter Dainard. Even though the home has changed hands several times over the years, the integrity of the original structure has not been challenged to a large degree. The original basement is under the whole house and a basement has been added to large extension at the rear. The extension allowed earlier owners to build a fire escape from the second floor as well as adding an extra, low ceiling above and a large family room on the ground floor. All the ceiling in the downstairs of the house, including the kitchen, dining room, laundry room and living room were still the original 10 feet when I toured the home in 1993 and I do not believe that has been changed. All the original four-inch wood trim was still intact around the doors and

This photograph was taken during one of Golden’s Oldtimer Reunions. From left to right is Mary Ann Dainard, H. G. Parson, Bessie Nattrass, Dan Kimpton and Mrs. Arthur Hamilton. The Who’s Who of Golden’s first families. Photo Courtesy of the Golden Museum windows both upstairs and down. The eightinch baseboard trim is apparent on both floors as well and adds to the overall beauty of the house. When it was built, this house was fitted with the newest in furnaces; a sawdust burner that had a hopper system to drop the sawdust into the burning chamber. Many of Golden’s early homes were fitted this way because the Columbia
River Lumber Company had sawdust to burn. Loads of sawdust waster were delivered to the homes and businesses and off loaded into the hopper. On my visit to the house, the chain-pull bracket for the hopper stove was still attached on the front of the builtin China cabinet in the dining room. This gave the owner the convenience of pulling the hopper chain
upstairs thereby fuelling the furnace without having to enter the basement. Two other interesting features of this large three bedroom home, are the kitchen cabinets that extend all the way up to the ten-foot ceilings and the antique bathtub which held a spot of honour – and took up most of the room – in the upstairs bathroom. Still surrounded by its large veranda, the
house’s area is zoned C4. Still privatelyowned and occupied, this house is smack in the middle of the industrial section of town and I worry about its future. Part of the history of the property is that it was once part of a homestead that was originally 7.5 acres. The Kimpton’s produced a thriving market garden here as well as ranching fox and mink.

Kicking Horse Embroidery has a new owner and a new home Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net Kicking Horse Embroidery has a new owner, and the doors are officially open in Nicholson. Susan Leigan bought the successful operation, and has moved it into her home office. "I like working from home. It's going to be great, I'm really looking forward to it," said Leigan, who is now making her lifelong hobby her job as well. "I've sewn for many years, it's my hobby. It's something that I really enjoy," she said. "My mom taught me how to sew when I was a little girl. I've been sewing ever since. When my kids were little I made a lot of their clothes." Kicking Horse Embroidery offers custom embroidery, screen printing, heat press, alterations, as well as the apparel for all of these services. "I've always done altera-
tions for people, but I've never advertised it. So now I'm going to be letting people know that I'm doing this as a business, and hopefully get a few more clients," she said.
“I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m going to enjoy it.” -Susan LeiganLeigan can help clients with anything from hemming jeans and sewing in patches, to taking in entire garments like shirts and dresses. The embroidery machine can service any material the needle can penetrate, and Leigan has the digitizing software to help with the design. The new shop in Nicholson is up and running, and ready
for people to come check the products in store. "Being that I have it all at home, I can work whatever hours I want. I'm hoping to have the shop open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. And for people who can't come in those times, they can call me and make an appointment," said Leigan. This will be the third business to be operating out of the Leigan household, including Leigan Enterprises, Golden Junk, and now Kicking Horse Embroidery. Susan is happy to be joining in on her family's entrepreneurial tradition. "It's going to be fun. I know it's going to be a challenge, but I'm going to enjoy it," she said. You can stop by Kicking Horse Embroidery at 838 Canyon Creek Road between noon and 5 p.m. on week days, or contact Leigan for an appointment at 250-2722222 or kickinghorseembroidery@gmail.com.

Golden joins Interior as provincial court districts consolidate Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar. net An amalgamation of the number of court districts in the province will see Golden part of a larger district, but won’t have any effect on daily operations at the Golden Court House. The number of court regions in the province is being con-
solidated to five from 12, a move that geographically aligns the regions with those used by other government agencies and that will improve court management. Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree, who proposed the change, also proposed that each of the five regions be administered by a regional administrative judge. Until the new pos-
itions are legislatively created, Crabtree has designated a judge for each region. Golden is now part of the Interior Region, which will be administered by Judge Robin Smith out of Kelowna. Nothing is expected to be affected in Golden, including the frequency and dates of court appearances. An independent review, done by Geof-
frey Cowper Q.C., recommended a clearer and modern governance structure for the justice system. As part of its response to the review, government committed in a white paper to making legislative changes lead-
ing to greater transparency, managerial authority and overall accountability with the justice system. That included support for realignment of the regional organization of the provincial court regions.
As well, under the Justice Reform and Transparency Act, the Provincial Court Act was amended on April 11, 2013, in consultation with the Office of the Chief Judge to acknowledge aspects of the chief judge’s
authority over judicial administration. The amendments provide the chief judge greater specific authority to manage the administration of the court, improving administrative efficiency.
