Dropping in on the fly Search and Rescue crews at CFB Comox are used to dropping things out the back of their aircraft. That includes life rafts, flares and even Search and Rescue Technicians. It isn’t everyday that something drops in. That is precisely what happened during an exercise near Sandspit in the Haida Gwaii Islands last month. “The SAR Techs were preparing to parachute onto the scene when over the intercom the pilots heard word that there was a little bird in the

cabin of the plane.,” said Captain Henry Graham. “The bird eventually hopped its way to the cockpit and landed on my finger while I was still flying the plane!” The Buffalo crew postponed the parachute drop long enough for him and aircraft commander Capt. Andrew Doepner to receive an on-the-fly flying lesson from their new feathered friend. Once the bird was secured on board, the crew continued with their mission. From approximately
2,000 feet above the ground the SAR Techs parachuted onto the small beach where they were picked up by their colleagues in the CCG. After they landed in Sandspit, the bird was carefully released and continued on its way as the SAR Techs boarded the plane ready for their next mission. “We were flying low and slow with the door open; the bird must have got caught in our wake and sucked in the back door,” Capt. Doepner later remarked. “He was a pretty lucky bird.”

Rescue crew from CFB Comox hover over a fishing boat off the west coast of Vancouver Island on Sunday as they prepare to evacuate a fishermen who had a medical condition.
Air rescue at sea An RCAF Cormorant helicopter crew was called upon to evacuate a middleaged man from a commercial fishing boat, approximately 80 nautical miles west of Port Hardy, B.C. early Sunday evening. Air Controllers at Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria received a call indicating that the man was experiencing a possible medical condition on board the 48-foot vessel and was in need of evacuation to hospital. The Cormorant crew from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron took off from their base at 19 Wing Comox and was on scene at just before 5 p.m. “We talked to the ship and got the crew to clear a spot on the deck so that we could lower our Search and Rescue Technician (SAR Tech) safely,”
said Captain Pierre Faucher, aircraft commander. “Fishing vessels are always challenging to lower SAR Techs onto because of the masts, antennas and rigging on board.” As the Cormorant hovered overhead, the Flight Engineer operating the hoist lowered the SAR Tech to the deck. “It was a small area to hoist onto,” said Master Corporal Giles Bagley, SAR Tech.
“I went down quick, put a sling around the man for the sake of speed, and with perfect timing, the Flight Engineer. got us back on board the helicopter in no time.” The helicopter then flew to Port Hardy where the man was transferred in stable condition to B.C. Ambulance for transport to hospital. Search and Rescue (SAR) incidents under the federal SAR mandate are
defined as “all aircraft incidents and all marine incidents in waters under federal jurisdiction. With the exception of federally owned National Parks, the overall responsibility for land and inland water search and rescue rests with the provinces, territories and municipalities. The Forces may, however, provide assistance to land and inland water rescues when possible.
