New CAO for Vanderhoof Sam Redding Omineca Express Evan Parliament has recently filled the position of Chief Administration Officer of Vanderhoof. Parliament comes to Vanderhoof from Sooke, B.C. where he was also the CAO there. The position means that he will be a kind of town manager for Vanderhoof. “He will be that face of the community that is there dealing with the administrative things that go along with a community, said Gerry Thiessen, mayor of Vanderhoof. “Ensuring that the ideas of council, where council sees they want the community to go, that those issues are addressed and kept track of and fulfilled. We have a lot of things on our plate currently.” Was it a big change for Parliament to come this far north? “Not really,” he said. “Local government is standard throughout the province but of course the geography is different, the industry is different. Each community has their own make up but each government is the same. But yeah it’s a nice area.” “Council was really excited when we got the chance to hire [Parliament],” said Thiessen. “This is going to be a full role of keeping track and organizing those projects that we have going on right now.” While Parliament hasn’t been in town long he was brought up to speed quickly on a number of local issues such as housing, labour, and industry as well as how to promote and market the area.

Another project in the works is the pool that Vanderhoof must find the funding to meet a $12 million target. “This project is critical as we move forward,” Parliament said. “My job is to come up with some creative financing options to come up with the money and get this facility built. My kids are competitive swimmers and I’m looking forward to working with the committee on that.” “Our last CAO, Joe Ukryn was great, he’s

done a great job but he always let it be known that his real heart was back in finance,” said Thiessen. “We needed someone dedicated to being the CAO and we honored Joe’s wishes for his duty to be the Chief Financial Officer.” “I started [in Summerland] ten years ago as their CAO,” said Parliament. “And then from there moved to the island, so I’ve worked in both the Okanagan and then the island and now up here.” Vanderhoof should be a great fit for Par-

liament because of the many sports programs available. “I love sports I’m looking forward to playing hockey, tennis I love golf. I destress by heading to the gym, try to stay fit. And I have my pilots licence so I’m looking forward to getting to know the group at the airport.” Parliament attended the Vanderhoof Airshow last Saturday and helped out some of the other volunteers there.

The weather was hot at this year’s Vanderhoof Airshow which made it a little more difficult for the planes but they still managed to take off and wow the audience with powerful engines and aerobatic maneuvers. Among the acts this year was Peter Herzig who performed a number of tricks with enigmatic names like a half Cuban, a reverse sharks tooth, and something called a centre box humpty. Other acts included stunt pilot Ron Andrew, wingwalker Carol Pilon, hang-glider Dan Buchanan, jets flew by John and Richard Mrazek and “Super Dave” Mathieson.

HOLISTIC ALTERNATIVE THERAPY BY MAGDALENA SAITO

The Carrier Sekani tribal council hosted the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to carry out an inquiry into missing Aboriginal women in Canada. The commission heard from family members of the missing or murdered on August 8 at the Ramada Hotel in Prince George where tribes from the surrounding area were invited to attend. Jackie Thomas, former chief of the Saik’uz and now land and resource coordinator for the band attended the conference and heard the stories of the victims. She said that it was very moving to hear. “This sheds light to the situation in Canada I think,” she said. “There’s over 600 missing women in Canada and the hope is that this will shame our government into action.” Chief Teegee of the Carrier Sekani sent forward the request for the commission to visit Prince George. The request was a direct result of a collaboration between the Native Women’s Association of Canada, the Feminist Alliance for International Women and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. “We recognize the importance of this visit,” said Chief Teegee in a release. “As it is the first time that these international human rights experts have come to Canada to address the rights of women, and the rights of indigenous women and girls in particular.” Chief Teegee also stated that this is especially important because Canada has refused to conduct their own investigation into missing and murdered women. The press release stated that the investigation is long overdue.

What to do if someone is having a heart attack? Heart attacks can be very serious and require immediate medical attention. But what do you do if you see someone having a heart attack? · First: KEEP CALM · Call for emergency medical help (even if you are unsure, better safe than sorry · If you have had proper training, and if needed, begin CPR – this will help deliver oxygen to the body and the brain – if there is no one available to perform CPR and you have no training the operator on 911 will be able to walk you through it until help arrives. · Its a good idea to sign up for some basic first aid and CPR training – check the college calendar and sign up today, you never know when your skills will be needed. · You may be able to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) this sends a shock to the stopped heart and can help restart the pumping process. This can help before reaching the hospital. Known how to use an AED and remember not to do chest compressions while it is plugged in to avoid risk of shock – as with anything in life, make sure you know how to use the equipment you have on hand. Remember to take care of your heart. Preventative nutrition, supplements and or medication can help you avoid problems in the future. Remember that heart disease is influenced by bad fats, poor diet, stress and so on, but a major component of heart disease is also inflammation; chronic inflammation is what lets the cholesterol stick to the arteries, and so taking care of your health, stress levels, and oxidative stress are very important. 100 years of 4-H in Canada, 1913-2013 4-H in Canada first started in Roland, Manitoba in 1913. The first clubs were known as Boys and Girls Clubs. They consisted of sewing, cooking, gardening and livestock projects. They were made for farm kids and focused on the quality of the project or product. Members worked hard to train

the best calf, grow the largest crop or bake the best cake. However, in the 1950s the program began to put more focus on the personal development of its members, rather than the quality of their products. So that they would become leaders within their community. 4-H is young people and adults learning from projects and having

fun together. Sharing, leadership and “learning to do by doing” are its tenets. This year, 4-H in Canada is celebrating 100 years. This celebration will consist of 35,000 members and 10,000 leaders across Canada coming together to celebrate. And 2014 will mark 100 years of 4-H in British Columbia.

New home for the small animals

The small animal barn at the Nechako Valley Exhibition grounds is the newest addition to the facility. This building will provide some much needed space to help with events throughout the year. Coyotes bad this year Sam Redding Omineca Express A few Vanderhoof residents have experienced one of the worst years for coyote attacks, the coyotes have been described as “brazen” by one resident. Marie Thiessen, a resident living on Sturgeon Point Road, has had 14 of her hens “massacred” by the coyotes. It’s not just us it’s our neighbours too, we’ve been having coyote problems,” said Thiessen. “My nieghbour lost four lambs…The other day it came up to my house about 50 feet from my deck and tried walking off with one of my ducks.”

Thiessen unlocked one of her cages then went into her house for coffee and about five minutes later saw one of the coyotes attacking her chickens. She ran after it but it just stood there, fearless, and looked at her “like I was crazy,” she said. Another neighbour lost almost her entire flock Thiessen told the Omineca Express. “They’re definitely making their rounds this year, I don’t know if it’s the weather or what.” Thiessen said that she tried the local conservation officer but they’re understaffed and have too many problems to deal with.

Thirty seven new fires in the PG area The Prince George Fire Centre responded to 37 new wildfires over the weekend, after multiple lightning systems moved through southern areas of the fire centre. Crews are working on a cluster of fires south of Highway 16, between Prince George and Vanderhoof. The largest of these fires is estimated at approximately 10 hectares in size. None of the new fires in the Prince George Fire Centre are threatening any structures at this time, and most of the fires remained small. The largest of the new fires is burning in a remote area about 40 kilometres south of McBride and is estimated at approximately 15 hectares in size. Over the weekend, recreation site patrols found several abandoned campfires south of Prince George. Unattended campfires can flare-up and start wildfires. With unpreventable lightning caused fires keeping crews busy, person caused fires are especially concerning as they are always preventable and can divert resources. Campfires must be attended at all times. The best way to extinguish a fire is to add water and stir until all ashes are cold to the touch. The Peta Mountain fire is still the largest fire in

the Prince George Fire Centre. The fire is burning about 20 kilometres north of the north shore of Fraser Lake and is estimated at 250 hectares in size. Eighty five people are working on the fire today supported by one piece of heavy machinery and two helicopters. The fire is approximately 30 percent contained. “There was one small group of structures that was destroyed by the wildfire that weekend,” said Fire Information Officer Dustin Eno in an email. “Tankers worked to protect the structures, but the intensity of the fire overcame the retardant lines.” Despite some localized precipitation over the last 24 hours the fire danger rating in southern and western areas of the fire centre remains high to extreme. More lightning is forecasted for today and is expected to keep crews busy. The Prince George Fire Centre covers an area from the Yukon and the Northwest territories in the North to Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, the Cottonwood River and the Robson Valley in the South; and from the Alberta border in the East to the Skeena Mountains in the West.

Local stage actor goes to L.A. Sam Redding Omineca Express Brittney Martens, NVSS student, won an online video contest which included a trip to L.A. and a chance to improve her acting and meet with professionals like Chord Overstreet from the hit program Glee. “I was watching youtube videos like a normal teenager you know,” said Martens. “So I saw this ad and I really love Demi Lovato and she was one of the mentors and I was like ‘why don’t I sign up for that.’” Martens created a one minute video where she described her dream for a day: to become an actress. She told the Omineca Express that she has been in 23 plays to date and has been doing it since she was in grade two. She also does the children’s theatre in town where she sings and acts and choreographs all the dance moves for the kids. About a month ago, Martens went on her trip to L.A. where transit, hotels and even limousines were all paid for. On the day she arrived they sent her a make-up artist to professionally get her ready for the big day that lay ahead. They took her to the studio and hooked her up with a microphone all while keeping the identity of her mentor a secret.

“Everything was a surprise that day, I had no idea what I was doing,” said Martens. Then Overstreet came in and picked Martens up in a golf cart to give her a tour of the studio she was visiting. Martens had her own dressing room made up for her and the contest organizers brought in an acting coach who taught her how to deal with the camera. Being on camera was something that she wasn’t used to, having only performed on stage before. “He told me to connect with the audience just like you would on the stage but you have to look halfway towards the camera and halfway at the person. That really helped.” Then they did some improv and Martens had to perform a scene with Overstreet in front of the camera, which she hadn’t been expecting. “I’d never done anything in front of camera because I’m used to stage acting.” Then Martens got to talk with Chord Overstreet about how to end up where he is and at the end of the day she got to keep a signature director’s chair with her name on it. Martens will be in another play in September but her long term goals are to attend acting school in Vancouver. Another part of her winnings included an invitation to the Teen Choice Awards in Universal City, L.A. on Sunday, August 11.

Seniors get chance to visit historic museum Sam Redding Omineca Express Vanderhoof seniors will be taking a trip to Fort St. James on August 29, for an afternoon of adventure and fun. “We’re going to go to the historic park for the afternoon and do the tour there,” said coordinator Debra-Ann Bishop. “We’ll have some pie and ice cream then hang out for a bit and come home.. it’s a fun afternoon. Up to about 55 seniors will be able to go via the two buses that have been volunteered. As of Friday, August 9 several people have already contacted Bishop and signed up to go. “It gives the seniors activities and outing,” said Bishop. “I think it’s especially important to treat our seniors and elders with grace. Because we’re here because of them right? And it’s a payback for them, it’s a treat. It’s free, and I

would work very hard to keep it that way.” This will be the second bus trip organized by the Seniors Connected program which is facilitated by Nechako Valley Community Services. Both trips have been funded by New Gold which has allowed seniors to go completely free of charge.

For the first trip, the seniors were taken to Prince George where they got to do their shopping at the mall and elsewhere. Bishop said that the experience was a big hit with everybody including one older woman who takes care of her husband for six hours out of a day and so she never really had time to shop

before the Seniors Connected program provided the convenience. “But I had a few seniors say to me that they wanted to do other things too not just shopping,” said Bishop. So now the seniors will get to check out the restored Hudson’s Bay Company post established in 1806 on the

shores of Stuart Lake. Bishop would like to do another trip to Prince George sometime in the fall and she hinted at a possible trip to Barkerville sometime in the future or whenever funds allow.

Another round of liquor reforms Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is ordering up another round of liquor regulation changes, looking for ways to make life easier for businesses and customers without aggravating the health and social problems associated with alcohol. Discussions with B.C.’s 10,000 liquor licence holders have identified a few problems that should be fixed. Going into a consultation phase that runs to October, the government is looking for answers to a few obvious questions, such as why it takes a pub or bar up to a year to get a licence. Another question: why can a family with under-aged children go into a licensed restaurant for lunch, but can’t go to a pub and place the exact same food and drink order? This should be allowed, perhaps until the traditional 5 p.m. “happy hour” when the pub reverts to adults-only. A couple of suggestions have come out of the healthy growth of B.C. wine, craft beer and distillery operations. Look for new licence opportunities for farmers’ markets to sell local beverages along with the produce and preserves. Letters inviting suggestions from existing licence holders have gone out, and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap will be meeting this fall with industry groups, local governments, police, health and social policy organizations and First Nations in the fall. A website will be put up in September so members of the public can have their say. Here’s my suggestion to start things off. Recent incidents involving so-called “party buses” shone a light on this growing industry, The sudden death of a 16-year-old on a party bus outing in Surrey in February turned out not to be alcoholrelated, but to no one’s surprise, open liquor was found aboard the bus. Open liquor isn’t allowed in any vehicle, but perhaps a new kind of special event licence could be created for party buses. They have been viewed mainly as part of the solution to impaired driving, and the situation isn’t much different from a supervised event on a boat. Here’s another suggestion. Gourmet cooking classes are becoming popular, with customers preparing and then enjoying their meals. Why not licence these establishments, at least so people can bring their own wine for dinner? Both the B.C. Liberals and NDP have advocated for easing the archaic rules on inter-provincial trade in wine. B.C. lifted its restrictions on mail-order wine and has urged other provinces to follow suit.

There are a couple of reasons why this Prohibitionera structure persists. Liquor sales are a cash cow for provincial governments, and every case of wine brought in from elsewhere is lost profit for the provincial wholesale monopoly. Then there is the local industry lobby that would rather not add to its competition. Premier Christy Clark pressed this point at the recent premiers’ meeting in Ontario wine country, bringing in the maximum amount of B.C. wine allowed under Ontario rules and urging free trade in Canadian wine. The Toronto media drank it up, aghast that they were barred from ordering the latest Naramata Bench tipples directly. No movement so far from the Ontario

government, in a province that has done well developing its own wine industry. The B.C. government will no doubt be lobbied again to allow beer and wine sales in grocery and convenience stores. Our politicians show little interest in that, which is understandable. The B.C. Liberals don’t want to upset the private liquor stores they have nurtured for a decade, and the NDP would never risk annoying the government liquor store union. Smart meter lawsuit A class action lawsuit has been launched against BC Hydro re the unethical nature of their smart meter program. BC Energy Minister Bill Bennett has offered a smart meter opt-out to a limited number of people, for a limited time, for initial and ongoing charges as yet unspecified. The smart meter Class Action asserts that for BC Hydro to install a wireless transmitter on every home in the province without the home owners’ informed consent is not lawful. Issues of cost, privacy, health and security are involved. As well, it violates our civil, democratic and human rights. Anyone can participate in the class action, whether they currently have a smart meter or an analogue. This includes those of us who never had a chance to refuse the smart

meter and now wish it removed, those who have moved since a meter was installed, those of us in apartments, townhouses etc. with our own Hydro account, and business owners whose requests were denied. Everyone with an analogue meter received a letter from BC Hydro in January saying they have no choice but to accept a smart meter. BC Hydro has publicly announced its intention to install a smart meter on everyone’s home eventually. There is an initial cost of $100.00 to join the class action. This will pay for itself in short order if/when the no-fee optout is granted. If you register for the class action, you will receive an official acknowledgment that your registration has been received. All payments will go 100% to the le-

gal action. An additional donation would be most welcome to help with our awareness campaign. Time is of the essence. If the initial response is slow, the court will take that into account, as will Hydro’s lawyers. We need to show the court in short order the fact that we are a major group calling to be recognized. Riders’ sheets on blazing pace

That was quite a season Kory Sheets had in July. If the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ running back can somehow maintain his July pace throughout the 18-game Canadian Football League season, he will obliterate the CFL’s single-season rushing record by about 500 yards. That’s in the sports stratosphere — 92 goals by Wayne Gretzky territory; Barry Bonds’ 76 home runs neighbourhood. Born one day before April Fool’s Day in 1985, the 28-year-old Sheets gave notice last year in his rookie season he knew a few things about hitting holes and slicing off major yardage, totalling 1,277 yards to finish runner-up to Calgary’s Jon Cornish, 180 yards behind. Apparently, he was just getting warmed up. The Purdue Boilermaker grad ran roughshod over CFL defences in the Riders’ first five games this year as they went 5-0. Sheets rattled off 712 yards in those five starts, an average of 142 yards per game that extrapolates to 2,500 yards-plus for the season if he’s able to maintain that pace. (Last year, 712 yards for the entire season would have put Sheets No. 7 in the CFL rushing department.)

It’s not a shock to note he was named the CFL’s offensive player of the month for July. Winning is Sheets’ No. 1 goal, he told CFL.ca but he says he’s well aware of how his rushing stats stack up each game. And so is his offensive line. “Honestly I think they have more pride in it,” Sheets told CFL.ca of his front five. Mike Pringle, the CFL’s all-time leading career rusher, holds the singleseason mark at 2,065. Sheets would have to average just 104 yards per game the rest of the way to grab the single-season mark. His lowest singlegame total through the first five was 130 yards. Averaging 104 the rest of the way shouldn’t be a problem. Of course, if the Riders keep rolling as they did in July, their last few games in October may be meaningless, which might tempt coach Corey Chamblin to scale back Sheets’ playing time to keep him fresh for the playoffs. On the other hand, if an alltime league rushing record is within view, fans in Rider Nation will insist on seeing No. 1 (on the uniform, and in Rider fans’ hearts) taking handoffs and hitting the holes.

No medals for midgets at provincials Sam Redding Omineca Express The Vanderhoof Midget Lacrosse team played in its first ever Provincial “C” Championship in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam on the August 3 weekend. They had to follow the performance of the Pee Wee team, who won bronze in their first Provincial “C” championship. Although their hard physical play didn’t earn the Midget team a medal, their performance was noticed by teams across the province. “It was great, it was a great experience for our group,” said Tyrone Yee, coach. “We did well, we didn’t come up with any victories but we had a couple close games.” Because lacrosse is just starting to really pick up in Vanderhoof, Yee said the team may not have as much experience playing together as some teams that have been together for four years or more. The coach said that lacrosse is making leaps and bounds in Vanderhoof. This year they nearly doubled in size and Yee said

he hopes they will continue to go further. They are hoping to keep the Bantam, Midget, and Peewee teams and add a Novice team next year which could add another 14 to 20 players. Three Vanderhoof players were recognized for their great performances throughout the season and during the tournament. Eric Silver was named to the tournament’s All Star team, Jayden Syrota received the Warrior Fair Play award, and Jason Yee was named Warrior Zone 7 Player of the Year, which included a $500 bursary. The player of the year award means more than just being outstanding at lacrosse according to Tyrone Yee. It also includes community work and giving back to lacrosse. “My son [Jason] has been out with me to recruit and to coach and he’s been at all the practices with me and the young kids and he was voted as one of the seven players given the warrior player of the year award Vanderhoof Minor Lacrosse would like to thank their sponsors, D&D Boon Construction and BID Construction for their support. Vanderhoof Stroke Recovery’s goal is to encourage stroke survivors to improve their lives through education, exercise, work groups, crafts, outings, etc. No special skills required; training and orientation are provided. Patience and caring understanding a necessity. Volunteers share responsibilities: assisting with activities, exercises, education, crafts, outings, fund raising.
