Metro plans $4m overhaul of ‘lake’ By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

A Metro Vancouver plan for the redevelopment of the filled-in man-made swimming pool lake in Aldergrove will see the site used for hiking, biking, picnics and other dryland family activities. The Aldergrove Regional Park Management Plan was approved by the regional authority board of directors on July 26, a vote that clears the way for short-term “modest improvements” to the area where the 50-year-old cementlined pool used to be, and a more ambitious long-range overhaul of the entire park. The plan calls for re-introducing family activities at the pool area “with expansion of an accessible loop trail with picnicking, nature play and learning stations.” The free pool was opened as “Aldergrove Beach” in 1963 by property owner Harry Keillor, and taken over by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now known as Metro Vancouver) in 1969. It served as a close-at-home summer vacation destination for thousands of Langley and Abbotsford residents until it was shut down in 2011 because of new B.C. Public Health Act regulations that defined the “lake” as a public swimming pool requiring an operating permit. Metro Vancouver was unable to get an operating permit because the lake failed to meet minimum provincial water quality standards for swimming pools. For example, pool standards require a six-hour turnover for filtration of the water, while the lake filters had a

In June of 2011, after Metro determined it would cost too much to rebuild the lake, crews with heavy earth moving equipment filled it in. The former lake site now has a new name, the “Main Day-use and Blacktail Picnic Area.” In a report to the Metro board meetings, Valoree Richmond, the Parks East area planner at Metro describes Blacktail as the “primary park destination” that offers a picnic shelter, washroom building and large capacity parking area for visitors. The 280-hectare park on the Canada-US border (the main entrance to the park is located on 8 Avenue just east of 272 Street) attracted 342,000 visitors in 2012. It provides 11.8 kilometres of pedestrian, cycling and equestrian trails, picnic grounds, nature study areas,

a dog off-leash area, Camp Elkgrove children’s camp, and the Aldergrove Bowl Activity Area. The Metro plan calls for more improvements to the whole park over the next 20 years at an estimated cost of $4 million. Some of the planned changes include adding more trails, including one that allows dogs to be off-leash, as well as an “urban sky park” designation for the amateur astronomers who already use the area for nighttime viewing and “significant new wetland habitat” for wild birds in the Gordon’s Brook area. The Richmond report said the proposed plan was “highly supported” at a Sept. 2012 open house and a web survey. “Comments indicated that the plan ‘provides something for everyone’ and the desire to ‘get going with it’,” Richmond wrote.

Legion car show ‘shines’ By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Perfect weather helped make the annual Car Show and Shine another success at the Aldergrove Legion on Saturday, August 10. Just over 70 owners of vintage and collectible vehicles turned out to display their cars under the sunny skies. The event is a fundraiser for the Aldergrove Legion charities fund, which has raised several thousands of dollars over the years. A full tabulation of the monies raised has not been made yet but the total amount will be presented to the Legion executive at their first meeting of September. Winners of the various categories of the show are as follows: Tommy Target and his 1948 Dodge came first overall, followed by

Ted Schroeder and his 1973 Corvette Stingray coupe and Ed Chew and his 1980 Corvette. Best truck prize went to Leah Newman and her 1956 Chevrolet pickup, and her truck was also winner of the best interior category. Best engine and paint prizes both went to Tommy Target and his 1948 Dodge. Steve Tremlett and his 1966 Plymouth Satellite was winner of the best under restoration category. President’s choice prize went to Carl Newman and his 1964 Plymouth Barracuda. Winners of the licensed raffles were Curt Koenig (of the 1987 motorhome), Ryan Byhre (of the Jackson grill barbecue) and Sean Bunn (of the Canucks jersey).

There has been a rise in measles cases in the community, according to the Chief Medical Health Officer. Residents of Fraser East communities (Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and Hope) are being warned of the increased risk in low immunized areas of the region. The most recent exposure to this highly contagious virus has occurred in a post-natal unit at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Up to 60 women and newborns have been exposed to the virus by a visitor who was infectious with early measles at the time. Public Health staff are contacting the affected families directly to offer immunoglobulin in order to reduce the chance of the infection developing. Relatively low immunization rates in some parts of Fraser East have led to several clusters of the virus in previous years; the most recent being in April of 2010 shortly after the Olympic Games. Fraser Health says the most effective protection against the virus is two doses of the vaccine which is free to all those born after 1957. Residents are encouraged to contact their regular health provider to receive the vaccination. If residents suspect they have been exposed or have developed symptoms, they should see their medical practitioner and notify the medical practitioner’s

office before arriving in order to prevent the spread of the disease to others at the clinic. “The exposure of newborn children to this virus is a very concerning situation,” said Dr. Paul Van Buynder, Chief Medical Health Officer for Fraser Health. “They are too young to respond to the vaccine and some will not have received protection in utero from their mothers. This comes after a recent death of a child from pertussis, another vaccine preventable disease. It is a timely reminder that not vaccinating children can have consequences for other vulnerable infants.” Measles (red measles) is an illness caused by the measles virus. Measles is very contagious and can be a severe illness in those lacking previous exposure to the disease or without adequate immunizations. Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The measles virus can survive in small droplets in the air for several hours. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red and inflamed eyes (often sensitive to light). These are followed by a rash, which starts first on the face and neck, and spreads to the chest, arms and legs, and lasts at least three days. For more information on measles, call HealthLink BC at 811.

Hess is expecting 30,000 people over the weekend. Attendance has exploded, doubling every year since inception. Country music superstars and tens of thousands of fans from all over the continent are about to descend upon the District of Mission. The fifth annual Rockin’ River Music Fest is returning to the Mission Raceway Park this week. But this year, the stage and campsite are three times larger than in 2012. “It’s probably the biggest festival that’s ever come to the Lower Mainland, said Kenny Hess, co-owner of Rockin’ River Productions, and himself an acclaimed country and western musician performing at the festival. “They’re going to hear some of the best country music in the world. On the roster is multi-Grammy award winning artist Brad Paisley, whose latest album, Wheelhouse, deputed at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. If even a fraction of Paisley’s two million Twitter followers show up at Rockin’ River, Hess will be right about this being the Lower Mainland’s biggest show ever. And Paisley is just the start of a sensational line-up. “This is the first year we’ve really stepped up and drawn from the ‘A’ pool. We’ve taken front-line artists,

$53-m white elephant

Founded in 1957

Editor: Re: Proposed Aldergrove recreation centre. Enough is enough. How can anyone justify a “planned” cost of $53 million for a pool/arena project, for a community of less than 13,000 people. On a per capita basis, the cost runs to about $4,300 dollars per person — and that’s only if every inhabitant of Aldergrove were able to pay taxes. There is absolutely no business case for this project. Aldergrove is 37 miles east of Vancouver. There are many other pools and arenas in between. I do not think that any right-thinking person would drive all the way to Aldergrove to use their facilities, given the many other alternatives in other communities closer to their homes. At $53 million, where is the money coming from? People, be careful for what you wish for, because this could be just the beginning of an expensive, underutilized, white elephant that will be enjoyed by the few. James Byard, Langley

VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is ordering up another round of liquor regulation changes, looking for ways to make life easier for businesses and customers without aggravating the health and social problems associated with alcohol. Discussions with B.C.’s 10,000 liquor licence holders have identified a few problems that should be fixed. Going into a consultation phase that runs to October, the government is looking for answers to a few obvious questions, such as why it takes a pub or bar up to a year to get a licence. Another question: why can a family with under-aged children go into a licensed restaurant for lunch, but can’t go to a pub and place the exact same food and drink order? This should be allowed, perhaps until the traditional 5 p.m. “happy hour” when the pub reverts to adults-only. A couple of suggestions have come out of the healthy growth of B.C. wine, craft beer and distillery operations. Look for new licence opportunities for farmers’ markets to sell local beverages along with the produce and preserves. Letters inviting suggestions from existing licence holders have gone out, and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap will be meeting this fall with industry groups, local governments, police, health and social policy organiza-

Another round of liquor reforms

tions and First Nations in the fall. A website will be put up in September so members of the public can have their say. Here’s my suggestion to start things off. Recent incidents involving so-called “party buses” shone a light on this growing industry, The sudden death of a 16-year-old on a party bus outing in Surrey in February turned out not to be alcoholrelated, but to no one’s surprise, open liquor was found aboard the bus. Open liquor isn’t allowed in any vehicle, but perhaps a new kind of special event licence could be created for party buses. They have been viewed mainly as part of the solution to impaired driving, and the situation isn’t much different from a supervised event on a boat. Here’s another suggestion. Gourmet cooking classes are becoming popular, with customers preparing and then enjoying their meals. Why not licence these establishments, at least so people can bring their own wine for dinner? Both the B.C. Liberals and NDP have advocated for easing the archaic rules on inter-provincial trade in wine. B.C. lifted its restrictions on mail-order wine and has urged other provinces to follow suit. There are a couple of reasons why this Prohibition-era structure persists.

Liquor sales are a cash cow for provincial governments, and every case of wine brought in from elsewhere is lost profit for the provincial wholesale monopoly. Then there is the local industry lobby that would rather not add to its competition. Premier Christy Clark pressed this point at the recent premiers’ meeting in Ontario wine country, bringing in the maximum amount of B.C. wine allowed under Ontario rules and urging free trade in Canadian wine. The Toronto media drank it up, aghast that they were barred from ordering the latest Naramata Bench tipples directly. No movement so far from the Ontario government, in a province that has done well developing its own wine industry. The B.C. government will no doubt be lobbied again to allow beer and wine sales in grocery and convenience stores. Our politicians show little interest in that, which is understandable. The B.C. Liberals don’t want to upset the private liquor stores they have nurtured for a decade, and the NDP would never risk annoying the government liquor store union. There are more creative ways to liberalize alcohol sales. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: Transit service to Aldergrove was finally getting great ridership on the 502 route down Fraser Highway to Surrey Central Skytrain. Now, due to buses passing people up in Surrey because they are full, TransLink proposes to terminate the 502 at the Langley City bus loop, and operate another bus from Langley to Aldergrove. This was how the service was five years ago. I would come home on the bus and arrive at Langley at around 6 p.m., often just as the last bus to Aldergrove had left Langley. I was often stranded in Langley City. Marnie Friesen, Aldergrove

Editor: The Aldergrove Fair Days Show and Shine had our fourth annual car show on Friday, July 19, and were sponsored by Bob’s Bar n’ Grill restaurant here in Aldergrove. There were over 130 vehicles attending; the usual variety of classic cars, trucks, tractors, race cars, military vehicles, and motorcycles. And the usual great variety of people with interesting stories to tell of restoring and maintaining their vehicles. I would like to thank everyone for attending and invite them to participate in next year’s event. Patty Bennett, Aldergrove

Poor job, bureaucrats

Editor: Last year I went to Rio de Janeiro to meet my daughter-in-law and my young grandson, a Canadian-Brazilian born citizen. The consular officials in Vancouver were most friendly and helpful and within a couple weeks I had my required Brazilian visa. For one full month I stayed as a welcomed and honored houseguest with my son’s in-laws in Rio. Marvelous people, the Brazilians, friendly and hospitable. Beautiful country. So now, I would like to reciprocate. And of course most of all to see my grandson and my son’s married wife and family once again. But do you think that is possible? No way — and why not? Because my daughter-in-law cannot get a simple visitor’s visa to enter this my country. Several months back she applied for a visa at the Canadian consulate in Rio and absolutely nothing is happening. ‘Under consideration’ is the constant response we get from our esteemed Canadian pen-pushers in Rio. Maybe now I should explain what is happening. Our dear Canadian consular employees are on strike. Worldwide, I understand. On strike! For more pay. Our federal government in Ottawa says that they are already being paid well enough and that it is not prepared to cave in. So we have a Mexican-type standoff with international traffic grinding to a halt between countries demanding reciprocal visitors entry visas, and thereby preventing reunification of families. Speaking of Mexico and Mexicans, by the way, our local agricultural community in this country is also hurting because no seasonal farm workers are being allowed in from south of the border. Way to go, bureaucrats. I say, fire the bunch of them, if that’s what it takes. The overseas bureaucrats, I mean. Rudy Langmann, Aldergrove

Two teenagers face charges in home invasion Aldergrove Star

Charges have been laid against two youths from Langley in relation to a home invasion that took place on July 29 in the 2800-block of 273 Street. On that day at approximately 8:40 p.m. police were called to the Aldergrove residence when several neighbouring tenants observed three males wearing hoodies and masks kick in the door of a nearby unit. Once the suspects entered the residence, a female was heard yelling for someone to call the police. The female victim, 26, was home with her mother DAN FERGUSON PHOTO An RCMP officer examines the scene of a fatal collision that claimed the life and five year old son at the time of the invasion and recognized her attackers. of an 80-year-old Langley woman Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 12. The victim’s mother, 51, was punched in the face and threatened with a handgun. The five year old was uninjured. The three assailants fled in an older grey vehicle. Metro to jack utility fees 23 per cent over five years By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

Sharply rising costs to upgrade Metro Vancouver’s sewer and water system will translate into steadily rising utility fees for the region’s residents. A new five-year forecast tabled by the regional district shows overall regional levies are expected to climb 23 per cent by 2018, costing the average household nearly $100 more than today. The average $725,000 home that paid $418 for regional utilities this year will see that rise to $430 next year – a 2.9 per cent increase – and a projected $516 by 2018. “It’s a little bit disturbing, White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin said of the nearly 25 per cent increase in utility fees over five years, adding that’s far more than the rate of increase of property taxes from most local cities. “We would be crucified at our end if we were to throw out those numbers, Baldwin said

at a recent meeting of Metro’s finance committee. Regional water servicing costs are slated to rise from $147 per average household now to $152 in 2014 and reach $189 by 2018, reflecting increases of around eight per cent in the next four years. Cost drivers include the new Seymour-Capilano Filtration Project, adding ultraviolet drinking water disinfection to the Coquitlam source and building new tunnels beneath the Fraser River to carry drinking water to Surrey. The sewage system – where rising federal standards are forcing Metro to rebuild two treatment plants – is pushing sewer levy hikes from $171 now to $216 by 2018. The sewage cost projection is considered tentative because regional district officials don’t yet know how much of the $1.7-billion-plus price tag for new treatment plants might come from senior governments.

And the regional board is also contemplating changing the formula that apportions sewage upgrade costs across the region – as a result the actual household impact could vary wildly depending on each city’s share. Although Metro Vancouver has forecast soaring garbage tipping fees – rising from $107 per tonne now to $150 and beyond in the coming years as it builds a new waste-to-energy plant – that’s not expected to bite as deeply at the household level. The solid waste levy is projected to translate into an increase from $60 per household now to $66 by 2018. That’s because organic waste collection and other recycling gains are expected to mean households generally will produce less garbage that incurs tipping fees in the years ahead. The levy for the main regional district budget – which mostly goes to run Metro regional parks and to pay for planning and administration costs – is project-

ed to rise slightly from $40 per household to $45 by 2018. Some Metro Vancouver directors want the region to look at increasing regional development cost charges, which haven’t changed in several years, as one way of generating more revenue. And Delta Mayor Lois Jackson questioned why Metro Vancouver still owns the Ashcroft ranch – which it once intended to turn into a new landfill until it was blocked by the province and opposing First Nations. “We should be getting taxpayers value out of that land, Jackson said. “We’re not in the business of running ranches. Taxpayers’ dollars are sitting out there. Metro officials said the ranch continues to run and is covering its operating costs. They said the region had been holding off on trying to sell the land due to low real estate prices but will review the decision this fall.

Aldergrove ready for western ball championships By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

All of the plans have come together for a memorable Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championship. The teams from Canada’s four western provinces are ready to play and the hosts, Aldergrove Dodgers, have all the facilities, volunteers and amenities prepared for their guests. Aldergrove was named as host city for the Western Canadian AAA Bantam Baseball Tournament by BC Minor Baseball. From August 16 to 18 the beautiful Aldergrove Athletic Park will see some of the best 14-15 year old baseball players from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia battle for the title of best baseball team in the West. The Western Canada Baseball Championships brings the highly competitive Bantam AAA baseball players together to play ultimately one of the biggest tournaments of their young lives, outside of the Nationals. Right here in Aldergrove spectators can see some up-andcoming local ball players who will be working toward to making teams like the Langley Blaze, Abbotsford Cardinals, or the Whalley Chiefs. The teams that will be competing this year are from Manitoba — the South Central Selects and the North Winnipeg Pirates; from Saskatchewan — the Saskatoon Braves and the Regina Buffalos; from Alberta — the Okotoks Dawgs and the Edmonton Cardinals; and from British Columbia — the Vancouver Mounties and our very own Aldergrove Dodgers. With only two years into Aldergrove’s Bantam AAA program

Aldergrove Dodgers’ pitcher Mitch Rennie winds it up in a friendly bantam AAA game versus Vancouver Mounties, Saturday, August 10 at Aldergrove Athletic Park. the Dodgers have shown they were already a contender early in their program by finishing fifth overall in the Provincials. The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the team’s tournament performance as the Dodgers competed and became a threat during each of their games. The Dodgers lost 4-3 in their final game against a good Abbotsford team and left the Provincials with

their heads held high and no excuses as to their tournament performance. The Dodgers now look forward to hosting and competing in the upcoming Western Canada Championships. The action started with a pair of exhibition games between the two B.C. teams last week. Vancouver Mounties won the first exhibition game 9-5 over the Aldergrove Dodgers, Saturday, August 10 at Aldergrove Athletic Park, but the Dodgers rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Mounties later that day. The Dodgers open the tournament on Thursday morning, 9 a.m., against the Saskatchewan 2 team, followed by Manitoba 1 vs Alberta 1. B.C. vs Saskatchewan 1, Manitoba 2 vs Alberta 2, Alberta 1 vs Dodgers and Saskatchewan 2 vs Manitoba 1 (see schedule for game times: http:// www.bcball.ca/teams/schedule. php?team=langleyaldergrove). On Friday the opening ceremonies are set for 5:30 p.m., followed by the skills event. Saturday’s games start at 9 a.m. with the Alberta 2 vs B.C., followed by Saskatchewan 1 vs Manitoba 2, Dodgers vs Manitoba 1, Saskatchewan 2 vs Alberta 1, Manitoba 2 vs B.C. and Alberta 2 vs Saskatchewan 1. If necessary tie breaking games start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, then the four pool semi-final games begin at 10:30 a.m. The final gold medal game gets underway at 4 p.m. Souvenir T-shirts will be available for purchase at the tournament desk, a full concession is available during the tournament and 50/50 draws will take place throughout each day. There will also be raffles for some tremendous prizes including some special baseball mementoes.

The Dodgers’ team roster consists of Jaron Jeske, Jake Polancic, Jarrod Manick, Ian Burns, Nick Atkinson, Cole Cantelon, Ken Dubois, Laith Sweiss, Owen Napieralski, Riley Ens, Yi-An Pan, Yi-Fan Pan, Mitchell Rennie, Isaiah Hayes, Kobe Morris, Kyle Stubbins, Samuel Avila, and Brendan Coulter. Coaches are Darren Rock, Dean Cantelon, Marty Van der loos and Dave Watkins. The Dodgers added six out-of-

town players to their roster, as permitted by BC Baseball, for the upcoming Western Canada Championships: Mitchell Rennie (Richmond), Isaiah Hayes (Richmond), Brendan Coulter (Kamloops), Sam Avila (Kamloops), Kobe Morris (Victoria Red) and Kyle Stubbins (Tri City). Seven of the players were also on the 2011 Langley Little World Series team which attended the Uganda Goodwill event.

Langley’s Ellenwood, Rolfe lead the way at Legion Track & Field By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star

Eight Langley athletes found the podium over the weekend at the 2013 Royal Canadian Legion track and field championships at McLeod Park. Four of the athletes were representing Team B.C./Yukon while the other four were representing the

Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club. Leading the way for the B.C./ Yukon squad was Dean Ellenwood, who captured gold in the midget boys 800m race — with a time of 1:56.12 — and narrowly missed another gold, taking silver in the 300m race. Ellenwood crossed the finish line in 36.67, just 0.03 behind

the gold-medal winner. In the youth girls javelin, Brittni Wolczyk won gold with a throw of 48.71m. Robyn Buckingham won silver in the youth girls heptathlon, accumulating 4,722 points over the six events. She was just 64 points behind the gold medal winner. And Nick Colyn took bronze in

the youth boys 2000m steeplechase event with a time of 6:00.47. All four athletes also complete for the Mustangs. Representing the Mustangs at the Legion championships, four other athletes finished on the podium in their respective events. Hannah Rolfe won gold in the midget girls high jump, clearing

1.67m. Fernando Martinez and Joel Harrison both won silver in their respective events. Martinez cleared 4.1m in the youth boys pole vault while Harrison scored 3,002 points in the pentathlon. And Lauryn Cheung took bronze in the midget girls pole vault after clearing 2.7m.

public notice Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches The Township of Langley uses three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mower for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes or an assigned area to follow. If the equipment is pulled away to do a specific request, it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches. If you have a request for mowing or brushwhacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible. The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classified open channel water systems into three categories: Class A ditches are fish bearing and Class B ditches are fish habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed. Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and only require notification for work to take place. How or when a ditch is cleaned depends on its classification. Thank you for your understanding as we operate under these requirements. Engineering Division 604.532.7300

Fusion players deliver ‘special moment’ Aldergrove Star

They may have lost the gold medal match at the provincial championships, but the Fraser Valley Fusion 97 fastpitch team left a lasting impression thanks to a wonderful display of sportsmanship earlier in the tournament. The Fusion fell 7-0 to the Delta Heat 97 in the championship final of the U16 A provincials, which were held at Victoria’s Helmcken Park at the end of July. During the team’s playoff game against Surrey — when a loss would have dashed their chances of winning a medal — an opposing player hit a three-run home run to tie the game. But while rounding first base, she twisted her ankle and by the time she got to third base, was in serious pain. Because she was already on the base paths, it was too late for a pinch runner and any assistance from a coach or trainer would

And that is when the Fusion players took over. Remembering a similar story from an NCAA game a few years back when an opposing team carried a player home, the Fusion players went up and picked up the player and helped her cross home plate for the tying run with the fans cheer-

ing them on. “It was awesome,” said Fusion coach Gord O’Grady. “They did it completely on their own; they knew it was the right thing to do (and) it was a very special moment I won’t ever forget.” The Fusion would go on to win the game 9-7, as well as one more game against the Surrey Storm

98 to make it to the semifinals. And in that game, Fraser Valley played “the game of their lives” in upsetting the top-seed

Gold rush at judo nationals By DAN KINVIG Aldergrove Star

Abbotsford’s judo athletes took full advantage of having the Canadian championships just down the road at the Richmond Olympic Oval, turning in a series of memorable results. The Abbotsford Judo Club (AJC) cracked the top-10 in the overall club point standings for the first time ever, finishing eighth after collecting six medals. Brandon Jobb led the charge for the local club, winning gold medals in both

the U21 and senior men’s divisions at -90 kg. Jeff Swadden (+100 kg) was also a double medalist, claiming gold at U18 and bronze at U21. Young standout Leo Goldberg (U15 -50 kg) also won a gold medal, while Simren Brar (U18 -46 kg) took bronze. Additionally, Abbotsford native Scott McGrandle, who trains out of the National Training Centre (NTC) in Montreal, came home to win his second senior national title in the -81 kg weight class.

White Rock Renegades 97 2-0 with a great defensive performance. But playing their 10th game in three days against a well-rested Delta squad proved too much as the Fusion fell 7-0. Fraser Valley had gone 3-1 in the round robin to place fourth and advance to the playoff round. Altogether, the team went 7-3 at provincials. The team consists of Callum Pilgrim, Chloe Adams, Courtney O’Gardy, Hailey Motherwell, Julia Harris, Kristen Rodgrigues, Laura Stevens, Paige Chalmer, Paige Taylor, Sarah Beaton, Shae Domitruk, Shannon Chick, and coaches Gord O’Gardy, Loyd Chalmer and Jenny Mckellar.

He was known to all as Uncle Billy. This name speaks deeply to his gentle, intuitive, and ever curious nature. He had an innate understanding of all things electronic and a passion for classical music. He spent his life working on the family dairy farm in Aldergrove. Uncle Billy always had a German shepherd dog as his close companion. Each successive dog was named either Tiger or Bear and he loved each as if they were one.

He is survived by his nieces Kathleen Murray-Ure and her husband Rod Burlinson, who was one of Uncle Billy’s best friends; and Babs Murray-Ure. “Glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world was”. At Uncle Billy’s request there will not be a service. His ashes will be interred at his father’s grave site. Family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to Union Gospel Mission or the BC Cancer Society.
