espite a sunny and rain-free July, Metro Vancouverites kept tap water usage under control. And regional district officials are crediting tightened lawn sprinkling regulations for the water conservation success during the record dry spell. Metro Vancouver dispensed an average of 1.45 billion litres a day last month, with a peak of 1.6 billion litres on July 24. The region consistently stayed well below its one-day record high for water consumption of more than two million litres set four years ago. “It appears that mornings-only lawn

fter spending the past year tweaking their proposal for a master-planned community that would change the face of the Harbourside Drive waterfront, Concert Properties is close to unveiling their refined plan. “A lot has transpired in the past year,” Concert Properties president and chief operating officer Brian McCauley told City of North Vancouver council on July 22. McCauley said Concert’s consulting team has worked with CNV engineers to flesh out the geotechnical work required to build at the waterfront site. The updated redevelopment application now conforms to the city’s minimum 4.5-metre height target for new construction above sea level. Developers Concert Properties’ and Knightsbridge Properties’ 10-year plan is to create 800 strata and rental housing units, while setting aside 372,000 square feet as commercial space. “I think that the introduction of residential on one of the last pieces of land on the North Shore, certainly within the city, that has a potential for job creation is a foolish idea,” CNV Coun. Rod Clark, a vocal opponent of the project, told The Outlook last week. Anticipated congestion in the Harbourside area has been a concern of council members since the beginning of the application process. Currently, vehicles can only access the area from the Fell Avenue overpass and a small crossing at Bewicke Avenue. CNV director of community development, Gary Penway, said a contribution for second overpass was reviewed and it would not be viable. McCauley, meanwhile, said great progress on traffic and parking planning has been made. “… [there’s] a commitment from Mayor Mussatto TransLink at this stage to bring a new bus line to the lower road running from Park Royal to Lonsdale Quay that would serve not only Harbourside but also Seaspan and others along the way.” Concert, in talking with the Northshore Auto Mall and surrounding businesses, has come up with a temporary traffic solution: a plan to create 50 parking stalls on the Lions Gate Christian Academy site. Those stalls would later be relocated to the street as part of the new Harbourside development. City staff are currently working with a third-party consultant on a “substantial” community amenity contribution package for the proposed 12-acre community south of the Northshore Auto Mall. The consultant’s main priorities are to project how much revenue the development will generate over time, and the “lift” in land value upon rezoning. In a report to council, Emilie K. Adin, CNV deputy director of community development, indicated Concert Properties’ community amenity offerings would include substantial off-site improvements, public amenities and a significant cash contribution. Mayor Darrell Mussatto said he’s hopeful the Harbourside application will move forward in the fall, and a decision made. “I’m happy to hear you have had discussions with Translink and that there is a potential for a new bus service in the area,” said Mussatto, addressing McCauley during the July 22 meeting. Council approved a town hall meeting for the rezoning application, to be held after the city finishes negotiating the community amenity contribution package. Playing hockey to feed the hungry A national campaign organized by a West Vancouver man raised 350,000 pounds of food SHARRON HO CONtRibutOR

est Vancouver’s Richard Loat has been gathering Canadians all over the country to ‘play hockey for food.’ Loat, 24, is the founder of Five Hole for Food, a campaign that tours around Canada, setting up pick-up hockey games for anyone who comes with a food donation and hockey stick in hand. All donations are given to local food banks and people of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join. The event began in 2010 and collected 6,000 pounds of food. And while that’s nowhere near modest beginnings, this year’s crop of donations makes the inaugural year and all the years that followed pale in comparison. “After all was said and done, we wrapped up on Granville Street this year and our totals were 350,000 pounds of food,” Loat said, adding the tour, which ended on July 20 in Vancouver, had the same number of stops as last year, travelling to 13 cities coast to coast in 17 days. The mammoth collection crushed the initial goal of 250,000 pounds and more than doubled last year’s harvest. “To see each city come out in this overwhelming manner, where they’re… essentially doubling what you raised in that city the year before — it was special. It was exciting to see more people turn out,” Loat said. The inspiration for Five Hole for Food came from the fervour and excitement hockey elicited during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Loat recalled throwing nets and hockey sticks onto Granville Street when it was pedestrian only, and having flocks of players and spectators crowd the makeshift rink. “It just demonstrated how powerful hockey was as a cultural force that brings Canadians together. It also demonstrated the fact that hockey had the ability to be a vehicle for change. “One of the things we found is whether you have an NHL franchise or you don’t, cities across Canada are incredibly passionate about the game and that’s really behind this cause — turning that passion into action.” Originally from Dubai, Loat relocated to West Vancouver with his family when he was nine. The avid athlete actually grew up as a competitive swimmer and only developed a passion for hockey after viewing the gold medal Olympic win in 2002. “I just completely fell in love with the sport and the rest, as the say, is history,” Loat said. Although his national campaign directly

For me, the thing that I’m most proud of is I’m able to help not only my community, but other communities that I don’t live in.” Decompressing from the recent tour, Loat is currently in the midst of completing his MBA from Simon Fraser University and dividing the very little spare time he has doing things like reading, playing sports and the odd video game. VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is ordering up another round of liquor regulation changes, looking for ways to make life easier for businesses and customers without aggravating the health and social problems associated with alcohol. Discussions with B.C.’s 10,000 liquor licence holders have identified a few problems that should be fixed. Going into a consultation phase that runs to October, the government is looking for answers to a few obvious questions, such as why it takes a pub or bar up to a year to get a licence. Another question: why can a family with under-aged children go into a licensed restaurant for lunch, but can’t go to a pub and place the exact same food and drink order? This should be allowed, perhaps until the traditional 5 p.m. “happy hour” when the pub reverts to adults-only. A couple of suggestions have come out of the healthy growth of B.C. wine, craft beer and distillery operations. Look for new licence opportunities for farmers’ markets to sell local beverages along with the produce and preserves. Letters inviting suggestions from existing licence holders have gone out, and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap will be meeting this fall with industry groups, local governments, police, health and social policy organizations and First Nations in the fall. A website will be put up in September so members of the public can have their say. Here’s my suggestion to start things off. Recent incidents involving so-called “party buses” shone a light on this growing industry. The sudden death of a 16-year-old on a party bus outing in Surrey in February turned out not to be alcohol-related, but to no one’s surprise, open liquor was found aboard the bus. Open liquor isn’t allowed in any vehicle, but perhaps a new kind of special event licence could be created for party buses. They have been

viewed mainly as part of the solution to impaired driving, and the situation isn’t much different from a supervised event on a boat. Here’s another suggestion. Gourmet cooking classes are becoming popular, with customers preparing and then enjoying their meals. Why not licence these establishments, at least so people can bring their own wine for dinner? Both the B.C. Liberals and NDP have advocated for easing the archaic rules on inter-provincial trade in wine. B.C. lifted its restrictions on mail-order wine and has urged other provinces to follow suit. There are a couple of reasons why this Prohibition-era structure persists. Liquor sales are a cash cow for provincial governments, and every case of wine brought in from elsewhere is lost profit for the provincial wholesale monopoly. Then there is the local industry lobby that would rather not add to its competition. Premier Christy Clark pressed this point at the recent premiers’ meeting in Ontario wine country, bringing in the maximum amount of B.C. wine allowed under Ontario rules and urging free trade in Canadian wine. The Toronto media drank it up, aghast that they were barred from ordering the latest Naramata Bench tipples directly. No movement so far from the Ontario government, in a province that has done well developing its own wine industry. The B.C. government will no doubt be lobbied again to allow beer and wine sales in grocery and convenience stores. Our politicians show little interest in that, which is understandable. The B.C. Liberals don’t want to upset the private liquor stores they have nurtured for a decade, and the NDP would never risk annoying the government liquor store union. MC Madchild’s musical rebirth: He’s got love in his heart now, but his tongue is still razor sharp

adchild arrives in a new silver Mercedes G-Wagen with tinted windows, a bass-heavy track from Drake’s latest album thumping. His hair is freshly barbered, his skin tanned and he’s decked out in just-purchased designer Japanese jeans held up with a Louis Vuitton belt and a new grey T-shirt emblazoned with the iconic words of boxer Muhammad Ali, “I Am The Greatest.” Yesterday, with the release of his second solo album, Lawn Mower Man, the heavily inked rapper treated himself to a shopping spree (some T-shirts, jeans, hoodies and hats), a new-school barbershop haircut, sun-bed session and surf-and-turf meal at the Keg — with a root beer. “That was my version of a celebration,” says Madchild, aka Shane Bunting. Of course, not too long ago the then-notorious MC might still be out celebrating. But this is the drug-free, 2.0 version of Bunting who KOed the dope addiction — first to the prescription painkiller OxyCotin and later cocaine — that nearly left him down for the count. The blunt-talking rapper figures that addiction cost him nearly three million bucks but he’s not searching for words that rhyme with pity party. After getting clean, in 2011 Bunting launched his first solo album entitled Dope Sick and reunited with multiple Juno-winning Swollen Members, the hip-hop crew from Vancouver he formed in 1996 that’s earned a wall of platinum and gold albums. Dope Sick debuted at No. 3 on the Canadian Billboard Top 200 and earned a Juno nomination in the Rap Recording of the Year category and Much Music Video Awards nomination for Hip-Hop Video of the Year. “I feel a little more at peace because of recent accomplishments,” says Bunting. “I’m still very hungry and still have that feeling that five years

were wasted and it needs to be made up for. Do I feel better about where I’m at? Absolutely. Am I where I want to be? Absolutely not.” But he’s got a master plan. “You know who Tech N9ne is?” he asks. “Very well established, successful independent rapper who owns his own record label with his partner and they do very well. And he does 200 shows a year and he grinds and he stays hungry and he has an incredibly loyal fan base. That’s exactly the blueprint of what I’m building. I grind, I’m aggressive, I’m hungry — absolutely.” Of course his road back from hell didn’t start with sold-out stadium shows. Bunting’s first gig as a solo artist a few years back in Kamloops attracted 80-some fans. “That was a humbling experience but I kept going and kept going and the next time I went up [to Kamloops] there was 500,600 people, so I know the building process,” he says. “This is the difference between me and someone starting out — this isn’t my first rodeo, so I know how it goes.” And he doesn’t care if he’s rhyming in a small club or an arena. “I just love performing.”

There’s a new tattoo scrawled on the back of Bunting’s neck that reads: “Little Monster,” one of his stage aliases. At 37, he’s still lives up to that moniker onstage, but away from the mike Bunting no longer projects the same badass bravado of his youth. Minutes earlier, when he showed up a few minutes behind for today’s interview, he walked up saying “I’m sorry I’m late,” and extending his ink-covered hand. “I apologize.” He arrives without an entourage and says he’s not in a rush, preferring not to give some “cookie cutter” interview. When his iPhone rings he ignores it; he politely excuses himself when he has a smoke.

He’s incredibly frank and introspective about his past demons, relationship status (recently single) and his sobriety (recently he’s allowed himself to drink socially). The MC has already announced all of the above news to his 36,000 Twitter followers, he explains. As he begins to talk sobriety, a homeless man stops at the table to ask for change. Bunting stands up and fishes around the pockets of his new jeans and forks over a fistful of shrapnel. “Here you go, brother.” The man is thankful, figuring he’s scored at least two bucks. “No it’s five,” corrects Bunting. “You’re welcome, you’re welcome.” “But anyhow…where were we,” he continues, sitting back down. “I’ve been sober for three years, I know myself, I did this myself... I’ve known for a little while that I’ve been ready and I don’t want people who are looking up to me or who are sober because I am sober to think, ‘OK I am going to start drinking again.’ Because that’s not the message I’m sending here. I know myself, I have my own life and I have to live it for me as well as everybody else. “I appreciate the responsibility of people looking up to me and I just said I promise to you guys I’m never going to use drugs again and I can stay strong for you on that level….but it was also important to be honest and tell the truth.” Tonight (Aug. 15) Bunting kicks off the Lawn Mower Man tour in Vancouver at the Fortune Sound Club and already his follow-up solo album is generating lots of buzz. Last week, just a day after its release, it ranked as the number one hip-hop album in Canada on iTunes, ahead of rap luminary Jay Z’s latest. But touring in support of his new album isn’t all that’s going on in Mad’s world. He’s also got plans to relaunch his label Battle Axe Records with a partner and he’s just finished performing 20 shows on the Warped Tour, a music and extreme sports extravaganza with stops in major North American cities. Swirling his stir stick around his latte, Bunting is philosophical about his journey. “I don’t know if everybody believes in God but I do,” he says. “It’s funny, I’m spiritual, I’m not religious. I believe there are paths and you get little signs when you’re on the right path and staying on the right path. And I feel like I’ve been on the right path and I feel like I’m going in the right direction.” To illustrate, he tells a story. Just over a month ago Bunting bought himself a Benz — “a reward in life, you know, it was definitely a great day.” But the day got even better as he drove off the lot. “One block away, one block — I’m saying one block away — my phone rings,” he recalls excitedly, “I pick it up [and my] manager says you’re allowed back into America. I’ve been waiting three years to hear that and I was worried it was not going to happen. I couldn’t believe it. It was the best day ever. Then my manager Kevin Zinger says, ‘You’ve got two days to get ready — you’re finishing the Warped Tour.’ And the funny thing is when I got to the Warped Tour, the name of the show was Best Day Ever.”

“Dope Sick was obviously like ‘Poor me I lost three million dollars, I was a drug addict, nobody likes me’ and then….” explains Bunting, pausing, “....Lawn Mower Man is the transformation from being dope sick to OK, now I’m here, I’m living life; we’re not dwelling on the past anymore — we’re not forgetting the past we’re reflecting on the past so it doesn’t happen again but we’re looking to the future and we’re enjoying the present.” The veteran rapper did have some trepidation initially about how fans would react to his new album because, as he notes, “it doesn’t sound exactly like Dope Sick — to me it’s a progression.” “I don’t cram as many words into each line. I let it breathe more and I sort of — I was a little more fierce on it,” he explains, “I let my personality multiply on this album.” The album has a demo tape feel, he adds. “I didn’t want a polished sounding album. I wanted it sounding like back when I was younger and I did it in my basement.” So far, the feedback on social media has been overwhelmingly positive, like this comment on Twitter: “MadChild57 grabbed a copy of Lawn Mower man its insane definitely tops dope sick #Canadian #hiphop #fire #platinum.” “I was so happy when I started seeing all these great comments, I continued, PAGE 23

Ambition and wine Prevail

t’s always great when you catch up with an old friend after many years and it’s as if hardly a day has gone by. You still find yourselves on the exact same page, with the same ability to share stories with limitless enthusiasm, crack each other up and so on. This happened to me just last week. Kiley Hendriks and I worked together as servers at West Vancouver’s Beachside Café in the latekurtis@kurtiskolt.com 1990s, which included the opportunity to crack some pretty awesome bottles for guests and social hoists of wine and beer a-plenty. He was one of the most charismatic servers I’ve ever worked with; always curious and inspired by anything around him, whether food and wine on the table, music coming out the speakers, a perfectly balmy night, anything. He ‘retired’ from the industry in full-time pursuit of his musical ambitions of rapping. While many might roll their eyes at what could be seen a preposterous idea, Kiley

became popularly known as “Prevail” of hiphop’s Swollen Members, and a slew of Juno awards, a zillion sold-out shows and gold records later — no one could scoff at that move. All these years later he’s still going strong musically, but keeps close to his roots by being a fixture in Vancouver’s dining scene, only now as a constant patron and fan of local restaurants, a world of wine and devouring every last drop of culture offered here and the rest of the world as he travels. Along with a few contributors, he compiles all that inspires him at his website PrevailPrevail.com – do check it out. As we caught up, I asked him to recommend wines for readers since the guy’s always had a great palate. The first, something readily available that he’s eager for people to try; the second, a wine he sees as a Holy Grail for your table, regardless of price. Here’s Prevail in his own words:

“On a trip to Australia many years ago, some friends and I toured the Penfolds winery, seeing the entire collection of the legendary Grange Shiraz from its inception onward. In the gift shop, we were tempted by a “museum” release of the ’98 vintage. We actually purchased the bottle in hopes re-selling it in Vancouver would help pay for a portion of our trip. We got home shocked to find that our long-travelled bottle would actually fetch us less than what we paid on premise. After years of keeping it in my collection, we eventually decided to sell it and I have yet to taste that particular vintage. Now that bottle’s always on my mind.”

A tragic story, really. On the upside, Prevail (or you) could always grab the Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz ($69.99, BC Liquor Stores) that’s often referred to as “Poor Man’s Grange,” a killer dark chocolate, blueberry and mint-laden wine, partially aged in old Grange barrels at less than an eighth the cost of the delicious, but pricey classic. Perfect Pairings: Kurtis Kolt teams up with CityMarket For the next several weeks Outlook wine columnist Kurtis Kolt will be hunting the aisles of Loblaw’s new CityMarket in North Van in search of the perfect pairings to go along with his weekly wine picks. Now, let’s get pairing: Like many of us, one of my very favourite restaurants in town is Vij’s on South Granville for their inspired, charismatic approach to elevated Indian cuisine. When I haven’t had the time or energy to deal with the constant (well-deserved) lineups, I’ve enjoyed flipping through my now curry-and-spice-stained cookbooks penned by the restaurant’s owners, Meeru and Vikram, and tackling one of the more user-friendly recipes. What I like most of all, is that I can now be even lazier and easily pop a couple of their “Vij’s at Home” bagged selections into a pot of boiling water and within minutes I’m tucking into their deliciousness. With generous stone-fruit like mango and peaches driven by both grapes in the Kanazawa 2011 ‘Nomu’ ViognierSemillon, there’s a wide range of the Vij’s meals that would suit well, but my money’s on the Vij’s Chicken in Masala with a side of Vij’s Coconut Ginger Green Beans. Think of all of that fruit as having a well-suited chutney on the table. There’s also just a hint of residual sweetness in the wine to capture the gentle heat in the Masala, and the ginger component of both echoes a similar note in the wine. While the Penfold’s Grange might not exactly be finding a place on your table any time soon, Penfold’s Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, in all of its dark and rich opulence, is a tad more doable. It’s a big, bold wine and you’re gonna want to be thinking along the same lines for your dinner. A Bison Rib-Eye Steak done with the PC Black Label Soy & Ginger Marinade should easily rise to the challenge, and help soften some of those fine, dusty tannins that frame the wine so well. -Kurtis Kolt is a Vancouver-based wine consultant who won the Vancouver International Wine Festival’s 2010 Sommelier of the Year award for his work at Gastown’s Salt Tasting Room

ole Girls, a running club aimed at empowering “tweens” in a collaborative and inclusive environment, will be offering programs in North and West Vancouver at the end of this month. Ashley Wiles, 28, Sole Girls founder and life coach, started the club in April after working with women who had negative relationships with their bodies and physical activity. After learning that these perceptions usually develop in childhood, Wiles created Sole Girls to nip the problem in the bud. “It’s such an awesome program because it’s not just a run club. It’s really about empowerment through physical activity. So we play games, and we laugh, and we have discussions and we bring up topics like media and body image,” Wiles said. Sole Girls offers workshops, summer camps and a full eight-week program, where participants train and complete a 5-km run. All programming is designed for girls aged 8-12. “The whole program is teaching them about confidence, teaching them about goal setting and their ability to be anything they want to be,” Wiles added. Although still in its infancy, the efficacy of Sole Girls programming speaks for itself. “I had a mom come up to me and her

daughter had stood up to her bully at the end of the eight-week program and it just filled my heart with happiness,” Wiles said. “This is why Sole Girls is so important. It’s giving girls confidence in themselves, and opportunity to really build themselves from the inside out.” By providing girls the skills to become successful individuals, Sole Girls hopes to create a network of confident women. “Girls that are confident, happy and healthy are going to make strong leaders and essentially create a stronger community,” Wiles said. “We’re creating this bigger community of women who value themselves and value their bodies.” The 2 Day Tween Empowerment Camp, which will focus on anti-bullying, will take place Aug. 26 and 27 at the North Vancouver Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) on Main and Brooksbank. The eight-week fall programs are scheduled for Sept. 9 to Oct. 28 at MEC in North Vancouver and Sept. 11 to Oct. 30 at nognz brain fitness on Bellevue in West Vancouver. ocal television personalities will be locked into kennels at the BC SPCA’s West Vancouver shelter to raise money to fight against animal cruelty on Aug. 19. Erin Cebula, from Global TV, and Kristina Matisic, of TV shows Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag and The Shopping Bags, will be the BC SPCA’s temporary residents for the 2013 Kennel Lock-In. According to Lorie Chortyk, BC SPCA general manager of community relations, Cebula and Matisic will have to call family and friends for pledges to meet their fundraising goals before being set free. The event, which will also be held at a Vancouver shelter, has a fundraising goal of $18,000. All proceeds will go towards the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause. “We’re very hopeful that we’ll reach our goal, and we’re really so grateful that these folks are coming out to help us,” Chortyk said. The public is also being invited to meet Cebula and Matisic and make donations. According to Chortyk, the BC SPCA relies

at Lonsdale and 22nd (which later became 23rd when an additional street was added between 21st and 22nd). That’s pretty much where the club is now. A nicer spot in North Van, located on its most iconic street, you couldn’t find. In 1974 the bowling greens and its surrounding area was named by the City as Rodger Burnes Green in honour of a local surveyor and historian. Lawn bowling in West Van took place before WWI as well (and likely before the municipality separated in 1912 from North Van District) on tennis courts near the1700block of Argyle Avenue not far from the house owned by John Lawson (who became the municipality’s second reeve) and which had been originally built by John “Navvy Jack” Thomas, West Van’s first Caucasian resident. Charles Nelson, the first reeve, apparently built a private green on his residential property because Sunday play was forbidden on district land.

Mayors and reeves – such as Leyland, Loutet, Dugald Donaghy (NV City mayor 1923-25) and Derrick Humphreys (NV City alderman, 1956-65, WV mayor 1978-86 and WV club president) – have been a big part of lawn bowling here since the beginning. Back then they threw the first bowls of the season and the tradition continues to this day. In NV, the City and District mayors alternate as honourary president and vice-president each year. The three North Shore mayors are scheduled to throw first bowls during opening ceremonies of the Canadian championships.

Down Through History

The NV club was founded on Feb. 8, 1923, and officially opened Sept. 8 that year. A shed and old bandstand which stood near Lonsdale and 2lst became the first clubhouse. A proper clubhouse was built by 1932. The roof collapsed during the winter of 1964-65 and the building was condemned. The present clubhouse opened in 1966. The WV club’s first greens opened in June 1931 south of the original WV United Church located on the southeast corner of Esquimalt and 21st. New greens and the first clubhouse were built in 1934 at the club’s present location in Memorial Park on 20th just above Marine Drive. The clubhouse was enlarged in the 1980s and re-built on the same site in 1997 and opened in April 1998.

Trophy Time

The oldest club trophies at both North Shore clubs go back 80 years to the Great Depression era of the 1930s. The McMillian Shield, donated by my maternal grandfather Duncan McMillian who was elected NV president in 1932 for the 1933 season, is awarded to the NV men’s singles champion. Harold Cockrill was the inaugural winner in 1933. WV’s trophy for men’s rinks competition was donated that same year by British Pacific Properties Ltd., two years after the company was formed by the Guinness family to purchase and develop Hollyburn Ridge into what today we call the British Properties. The winner the first year was the team of Rowland Bindley, Alex Menzies, David Jay and Syd Gisby, the latter having formerly played at NV where he was 1931 president.. One other NV trophy, the W. Holdsworth Shield, for men’s doubles was created in the 1930s and first won in 1938 by Jack Loutet (NV club president in 1939 and City alderman 1926 and 1930-31 plus mayor from 194547) and Alex Milne (1930 NV club president).

The North Shore clubs – ranked second and third in 2012 among Canadian clubs for signing up new members with 42 for West Van and 40 for North Van – are at it again this year. WV has 44 more new members, NV 40. NV’s total membership is 284, WV’s 210.

The Champs

Sam Gardiner and Dick Williams were the first from the North Van club to win a Canadian championship when they won the pairs in 1954. West Van’s first national champs were the pairs team of Alex Johnson and Charlie Burns in 1970. NV’s Muriel Holness won the singles in 1974. The most decorated woman is NV’s Nellie Hunter who captured the singles in 1978, ’83 and ’84 and the pairs in ’91. Among men, NV’s Dave Brown has been part of four title teams, pairs in 1980 and ’86 and fours in ’84 and ’90. Let the 2013 Canadian championships begin. Canadian Lawn Bowling Championships set to roll in North and West Van

He’s also a two-time Canadian title-holder and is part of the B.C.champion pairs team contesting this year’s medals. For the uninitiated, the game has similarities to curling. The rock and the bowl are the implements. “Reading” the ice or the green is a key element. Games are played back and forth on the surface in “ends.” Only one team can score during an end, the score determined by how many rocks or bowls belonging to one team is closer to the target than the opposition’s closest. The skip directs strategy and throws last. However there are significant twists. Unlike the curling rock, the bowling ball is weighted on one side so it doesn’t roll straight even if you wanted it to. The target in bowls, a little white ball called the jack, is thrown to begin each end meaning it’s never in the same place like the button is in curling. And the jack will move if hit, meaning the target can change even during a single end. -Len Corben

“I saw a need for a guy with my skills out in the civilian field. Cars are evolving every year and that’s the challenge that I like,” he said. For 15 years, he travelled up and down Vancouver Island with a small tool kit, fixing vehicle problems that left other mechanics scratching their heads. Spooner joined Taylormotive in North Van in May and has been using what he calls an “algorithmic style of diagnostic” on vehicles of every make and model. “I’m an algorithmic type of thinker. It takes a lot to get world-class cellphone service in a country this big. I doubt Americans will bother with cities like mine. I believe communities like the Monctons of Canada should get the same technology as the big cities do. That way, my neighbours can be as productive and as plugged in as people in any other part of the country. It makes me proud. It’s a very Canadian thing. But I hear the government is inviting a giant U.S. cellphone company to Canada. What will this mean for smaller towns in Canada? I’m afraid it’s bad. Will this giant U.S. company virtually ignore small communities like mine and focus on big cities? That’s where all the money is, right? You know, when smaller towns and cities are left behind, it doesn’t just hurt me and my neighbours — it hurts the whole country. All we want is for it to be fair for Canadians. Ottawa should close the loopholes.
