Downtown business space Break-ins drop in Cranbrook is 25 per cent vacant RCMP

ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

Cranbrook RCMP gave its quarterly report to council on Monday, Aug. 12 and break-ins in the city are way down. “We’ve decreased our total break-ins by 74 per cent – that’s very significant,” said Cpl. Pat Prefontaine. “The last time I was here, I think we talked about the effect of one prolific offender or one person who comes to town and starts breaking into things until we catch him. That’s kind of representative of that 74 per cent reduction compared to the second quarter last year.” The number of break-ins was 13 from April to June in 2013, as compared to 54 at the same time last year. Prefontaine was pleased to report that traffic enforcement increased this quarter.

“I can see we’re getting more people coming back from maternity leave and we’re getting more people on the road,” he said. He said the goal of the 2013/2014 business plan is pretty hefty, as this year they had seven priorities compared to the four last year. “It’s going to be a tough goal because it’s a lot of work,” he said, adding that he thinks they are on track to reach it. The first of the priorities is addressing speeding in school zones and rural areas. RCMP have done 12 road checks at schools in Cranbrook and written 18 tickets to drivers. Enforcement in school zones is suspended until September. Coun. Denise Pallesen put out a plea to drivers to watch their speed zones. “Especially in the schools and

follow the signs, because they’re huge issues for any number of people,” Pallesen said. On the pedestrian side, jaywalking was deemed a priority. “We’re addressing that as far as helping city council to develop a bylaw or at least look at if a bylaw is applicable and do some research on that,” he said. Prefontaine said they’ve had a slow start on the distracted driving initiative, with only seven tickets written in the quarter. Prefontaine said he is addressing that and improvements have been made. Another goal was to increase police presence in Jaffray, Tie Lake and Rosen Lake areas, which he said has been successful with more patrols hitting those areas and some spots in between.

A report has found that a quarter of the commercial property in Cranbrook’s downtown core is empty ARNE PE TRYSHEN Townsman Staff

At the July 15 council meeting, Coun. Angus Davis expressed his concerns about vacant buildings in the downtown core of Cranbrook. On Monday, city staff tried to address those concerns, noting that there have been some improvements. “There have been several developments that have moved forward over the summer,” said Kevin Weaver, the city’s economic development officer. “One that has reached completion, the Heid Out, and two others that are nearing completion.” He said there are also two proper-

ties that have changed ownership and so they are expecting activity and redevelopment with those – the Armond Theatre and Shenanigan’s Pub. The report found that there is 100,000 square feet, or 25 per cent of the commercial stock, vacant downtown. “In terms of the vacant state downtown, it’s not much different than what we reported back in March,” he said. “A lot of this is related primarily to three large properties that take up the bulk of the vacant space.”

What to do if you find this small mammal on your property Submit ted

The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) has received numerous calls from residents of the area who have found a bat on the ground, had a bat fly into the house, or have a bat roosting in an unusual location. “This is the time of year when the juvenile bats are learning to fly and they’re not very good at it,” said Juliet Craig, co-ordinating biologist for the KCBP. “They fly into houses or fall on the ground and have difficulty getting up again.” Juvenile bats are born as pups in late June and July. In August, they are flying on their own and learning to forage. A bat that flies into a house can be removed by wearing leather gloves or oven mitts, or capturing it in a butterfly net or box. If it is out of reach or cannot be found, doors and windows can be left open in the evening so the bat can fly away. A bat roosting in a

A bat on the ground does not necessarily mean that it is injured or sick, it may

just be a juvenile that has had trouble flying.” Bats are usually not capable of propelling themselves up and off the ground. Generally, they crawl to a wall or tree, climb up it, and are then swoop down to fly away. A bat found on the ground can be put into a pillow case or cloth shopping bag and pinned, open end up, to a tree or wall in the

That way the bat can hang upside down in a protected location during the day, and fly out when it’s ready in the evening. “The most important thing is not to come into direct contact with the bat,” warned Craig. “It is very rare that a bat has rabies but still possible. If a person has been at risk of being bitten or scratched by a bat then they have to either kill the bat to get it tested for

rabies or have the shots themselves, neither of which is a good outcome.” The Kootenay Community Bat Project biologists recommend that anyone who has come into direct contact with a bat contact Interior Health. Winlaw fire chief suspended Marvin Beat t y Castlegar News

Winlaw Fire Chief Jon Wollenberg has been suspended for disobeying a direct order and it appears no one from the Winlaw Fire Department will respond to fire calls. Regional Fire Chief Terry Swan said by email that a plan is to be put in place Wednesday, Aug. 14 to deal with the unfolding situation. “I can confirm that Jon Wollenberg is suspended for a period of not less than three months and is required to complete a Fire Service Supervision course (funded by the RDCK) prior to his return to duty,” wrote Swan. “The reason is insubordination — willingly disobeying a direct order. I can confirm that someone phoned Trail dispatch last night advising

that no one from the Winlaw Fire Department would respond to a fire call tone out.” Swan said there was no delay in providing a response from the Passmore and Slocan Volunteer Fire Departments. “Residents can be assured that Fire Protection Services will be provided to the community,” said Swan. The story first appeared on Facebook via an online Castlegar media outlet. A call placed to Wollenberg for comment has not been returned. A call placed to the non-emergency number for the Winlaw Fire Department on Wednesday morning was greeted by a male voice instructing callers to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency; messages left would be returned by next Tuesday (Aug. 20).

Staples for students Cranbrook Staples is making this back-to-school experience a lot easier for young students in need K ait y Brown Townsman Staff

A study conducted by Canadian teachers and educators revealed that one in three young students won’t have the tools and supplies for a successful school year. Staples stores across Canada have recognized the importance of kids being prepared to go back to class with the necessary supplies and are doing their part to help. “It’s a national campaign that we run every year right during the back-to-school time. And it’s essentially just asking our customers if they would be interested in donating to help provide school supplies for some less fortunate kids to ensure that they get a good strong start to the school year,” said Connor Stewart, the Cranbrook Staples manager. “They can get involved, certainly donating products – we do have a box up front for colleting products. And generally it is just cash donations while people are going through the till,” Stewart said. The fundraiser has been going since July 27 and it will be running until Sept. 8. “This is hugely important. When you get out there you realize how large the need is and how many students unfortunately don’t start the school year with the tools they need, so to be able to provide these things for those kids is amazing,” Stewart said. “I wouldn’t pin-point

Our customers have been very supporting of the program.” As well, Staples Cranbrook will be hosting a bake sale this Saturday, Aug. 17, in the Staples store with the funds going towards Cranbrook schools. The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – depending on how long supplies last. “It is kind of dependant on how much we are able to raise. It will be to all the Cranbrook schools. If we can raise more than we have in the past, we’re going to try to expand to surrounding communities.” To donate and get involved you can donate at the Staples by dropping off supplies or by donating money at the location.

Cultural Alliance hands out $706,000 Submit ted

Over 170 arts, culture and heritage projects—including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour—have received a total of $706,000 in funding support for the 2013 –2014 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “The CKCA Steering Committee was pleased to be able to supply CBT funding to good projects all across the Basin. We hope cultural organizations will start thinking about activities that will be happening between June 2014 and May 2015 and planning their applications now for the next funding cycle,” said Jacquie Hamilton, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance chair. CKCA administers and manages arts, culture and heritage program funding on behalf of CBT. Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the CKCA Steering Committee, with input from community arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including in-

dividual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions and heritage capital projects. “Arts, culture and heritage are fundamental to who we are as Basin residents and integral to community well being in the Columbia Basin,” said Neil Muth, CBT president and CEO. “We fully support CKCA in its efforts to build longterm sustainability for artists and to strengthen and support arts, culture and heritage organizations.” CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize heritage projects and projects in all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts. Funded projects in the Cranbrook area are: • New Beginnings: Symphony of the Kootenays $2,000 • Young Writers’ Grp: Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy $500 • Body of Work: Scanning Time: Michael Steven Flisak $2,000 • “The Tempest”: Bard in Your Own Backyard $2,500

Retail sector drawn to highway locations Continued from page 1 Those three properties – the old Super Valu, the former Giant Tiger and vacant space in the Baker Street mall – account for 60 per cent of the vacant space. City staff reported that the remaining vacant space consists of various smaller properties, with 10 per cent considered prime in terms of marketability. “A lot of it is questionable in terms of its marketability and the prices that are being asked for on those properties,” he said. “So there are certain things that would have to be done with those properties to make them more marketable.” Those things contributing to the vacancy include property lease rates of $5 to $8 per square foot and the need for significant code upgrades for some of the older commercial stock. He said the retail sector in the

downtown core is at the same time being drawn to the desirable highway commercial properties. Such is the case with the new Sport Chek and dollar store being developed on Willowbrook Drive. “We’re starting to see more interest in that respect,” Weaver said. But he said the city is trying to work on opportunities to revitalize the downtown core, like the downtown revitalization tax exemption. The city is also working on business opportunities through the Opportunities BC initiative, a provincial webbased platform. “We continue to work with the province with Opportunities BC and it actually does seem to be working,” he said. “Just this morning I was dealing with an inquiry as a result of Opportunities BC from the United Arab Emirates. So we are getting some further appeal and reach from that.”

Local NEWS Kimberley council opts to Kootenay region see increase in number of wildfires stay out of pot initiative C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

The push is on to decriminalize marijuana in British Columbia, but the City of Kimberley will be taking no official stance on the issue. A group called Sensible BC is proposing an amendment to the Policing Act, instructing police not to spend any time, money or resources on cases of simple possession of cannabis. Sensible BC has contacted municipal councils throughout the province seeking support at next month’s Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference. Sensible BC will use the province’s unique initiative legislation to try to bring a referendum on the amendment to the public. The Sensible BC campaign has been signing

up canvassers and is prepared to start collecting signatures on Sept. 9. In the meantime, Kimberley City Council will not take any official action on the initiative, simply receiving the letter from Sensible BC with no further action. The matter had been deferred by Council from a prior meeting where only a bare quorum attended. Coun. Kent Goodwin said that while he would support decriminalization of marijuana, he wasn’t sure this was the correct way to do it. “I would encourage our delegates to the UBCM to support it,” he said. Coun. Jack Ratcliffe didn’t think it was something a municipality should be involved with. “It’s beyond our level,” he said. “I think it would be wise to stay away from it.”

Still no major wildfires around Cranbrook and Kimberley, but lightning sparks more fires around Revelstoke and Nakusp Submit ted

The Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 114 wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre over the past week. The majority of them have been small, spot-sized wildfires and none of the fires are currently threatening any properties or infrastructures. All but two of the 68 active wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre were caused by lightning. The majority of these fires are located in remote areas near Mica Creek, Revelstoke, Nakusp and Duncan Lake. tion and prevention, grief and loss coping skills and peer support were presented to 200 First Nations youth and community members. In the initiative to reduce organized crime, Prefontaine said there have been 14 drug trafficking charges this quarter, and one possession charge. He said police have also been keeping an eye on prolific offenders and doing curfew checks. In the quarter, there were 14 contacts resulting in three executive warrants and 10 criminal charges for assault causing bodily harm, break and enter, assault with a weapon, mischief, theft under $5,000, in addition to three breach charges. Citizens on Patrol volunteers put in 97 hours in the second quarter. “I’d encourage anyone with an interest in making our community safer to volunteer for citizens on patrol,” said Mayor Wayne Stetski. Coun. Bob Whetham asked about the recent raves at Koocanusa. “I don’t know how many people, we’ve had varying reports, from several hundred to a thousand youth coming

in from Calgary occupying areas of Crown land, and there doesn’t seem to be any control over what they’re doing,” Whetham said, asking if that’s something that the Cranbrook detachment has to deal with. The problem parties were brought up at the Regional District of East Kootenay meeting. Prefontaine said he was aware of the Fozzy Fest event, which he said went very well. “I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t cause extra strain on the resources of the Elk Valley or Cranbrook,” he said. Prefontaine acknowledged that the Cranbrook RCMP didn’t have as much funding this year as compared to last year to deal with problems out there. “When you get a lot of people and they come and randomly camp out there... it’s a difficult thing to get out there and police,” he said. “It really does call for a multi-agency interdiction out there. We’re dealing with Crown land, Reserve, private property... it’s an issue that’s getting bigger and bigger every year.”

While the old brick building was up for a decision at council on Monday, there were rumours swirling that Cranbrook’s old fire hall had been condemned. Mayor Wayne Stetski addressed the rumour during council inquiries by asking city administration to confirm that the building had in fact not been condemned. CAO Wayne Staudt responded to the mayor that, to his knowledge, the building had not been condemned. “With your comments earlier I think there might have been some

confusion that we were talking about the old brick building behind city hall,” he said. “But the fire hall is not condemned. As you know it’s a heritage building and the city has an obligation to maintain it as a heritage building.” Mayor Stetski said that sometime in the future council would be looking at plans for the whole lot that includes city hall, the fire hall and the RCMP detachment. “The fire hall is very much front and centre in terms of that future for this particular part of Cranbrook,” he said. “I’m looking forward to repurposing it in the near future.”

persuaded the PNG government to take them in return for a very large (but secret) amount of money. Why does Australia behave like this? Racism, obviously. Compared to any other English-speaking people, Australians (or a great many of them) are openly, astoundingly racist. You’d have to go somewhere like Russia or China to find people expressing their racial prejudices in such an unselfconscious, almost naive way. And here’s a clue: New Zealanders, similar to Australians in so many other ways, don’t talk like that at all. Racism is mostly about fear, and the Australians are very afraid of something. You may mock, but I have a theory about that. Every time Australians look at a map, they see the entire continent of Asia looming above their country like an avalanche waiting to happen. I suspect they are afraid that one day it will fall on them and crush them. But that’s only because conventional maps are drawn with north at the top. You can already get joke world maps in Australia that put south at the top, so that Australia floats serenely above that huge Asian mess below. Just make those maps standard in Australian schools and on Australian TV news, and in a few months you’ll see the change. Then, if the occasional boat-load of refugees bubbles up from below, who cares? Australia’s above it all, and we can deal with it. Problem solved. My bill is in the mail. What’s so great about perfection?

S

everal months ago, I wrote a column in which I suggested that it’s okay to settle for being good enough, rather than always striving to be excellent. It seems to me that part of growing up, part of becoming mature, is knowing when to quit striving, and when to settle for good enough. I thought of that again when I read a column by another religion writer, Tom Ehrich. He tells a story about being unable to go to upstate New York with his family. What he did was to take a long walk along the Hudson River, and then sit beside an open window overlooking the apartment house courtyard, where he sat in a cool breeze. He writes, “No, it wasn’t the same as a screened porch upstate. But it worked. Why? Because I made it work. I was motivated to step away from my desk and do something different. “Could I have had a more perfect day? Sure, I suppose so. But I didn’t need perfection. I just needed something different. Yes, I was ‘settling,’ as they term it. But that’s part of maturity: knowing that progress matters more than perfection. Sometimes you don’t get exactly what you want, and making do can be enough. Tweaking the day can make it a better day.” The trouble is that all around us, we are urged to attain perfection or excellence. Many people continue to chase perfection and refuse to compromise with realities

that fall short of this unattainable goal. We are brainwashed into thinking that “good enough” is just another way of talking about failure. But it’s not. Making the best of a reality that is often beyond our ability to change is a sign of becoming mature. It’s the two–year–olds who stomp their feet, cry buckets of tears, and have a temper tantrum when things don’t go their way. Those who have grown up don’t do that. Rev. Yme Wisdom and maturity Woensdregt would say: Sit beside an open window and relax. You can’t control everything. Do what you can, make do, and then enjoy it. It takes the pressure off when we are able to come to terms with the reality which is ours. Partly that’s common sense. But there is more to it. Perfection is a savage god. Trying to worship at the altar of this god will only destroy us. As I mentioned in that previous column, we can’t maintain this kind of neurotic driven–ness that demands constant improvement. It’s impossible. We are not gods with infinite resources. We are finite, limited human beings. That is simply part of our reality. Coming to terms with it is a sign of good mental health. I write this just after the latest scandal in Major League Baseball. Top athletes, who are paid an obscene amount of money because they are able to hit a small white

ball hundreds of feet, have been exposed for using drugs to enhance their natural abilities. They cheat. They will do whatever it takes to win. Perfection is a savage god. They’ve been caught, and now their reputation is in tatters. More tragically, their body will pay the price long after their lucrative contracts have expired. And even worse, they have been isolated from others in their striving beyond reasonable limits to be the best. Perfection is a savage god. It demands a physical cost, a social cost, a personal cost. Perhaps most damning of all, perfection corrupts your soul by making an idol of your tastes and preferences. Perfection can make you a monster as you focus on this one goal so that the rest of life falls away like so much dross. That kind of single– mindedness exhibits the same kind of monstrous thought processes as the religious extremists who will blow up children in order to defend their ideology. I have mentioned before that a dozen or so years ago, I was diagnosed as clinically depressed. One of the symptoms of my depression was “perfectionism”. Good enough wasn’t good enough for me. And I was never satisfied. The savage god sucked my soul dry until I reached a point where I thought I was worthless. I’ve learned a healthier way since then. I’ve learned that often good enough is just fine. I make do as best I can. And you know, that’s not so bad. Yme Woensdregt is pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

Smart meter class action lawsuit off to slow start Jeff Nagel Black Press

Opponents of BC Hydro’s wireless smart meters are scrambling to quickly assemble enough people willing to be part of a planned class-action lawsuit they hope delivers a permanent opt-out from the program. Victoria resident Sharon Noble, with the group Citizens for Safe Technology, said success in convincing a judge to certify the class action may hinge on how many people take part. She estimated Wednesday that 100 to 150 people are registered – a start she called slow – but added hundreds more sign-ups are likely in progress. Given the number of people who have blocked smart meter installation or had one installed against their wishes, she said, it would be surprising if thousands don’t join the lawsuit. “The courts would be very influenced by having a large number,” Noble said, adding a judge could soon begin considering whether to

Victoria resident Sharon Noble hopes thousands of opponents of wireless smart meters join an intended class action lawsuit against BC Hydro. certify the class action. “The more people we have signed on by then, the more likely the courts would look on this as being a very significant movement, as opposed to a movement of a handful.” About 60,000 households have refused smart meters or less than four per cent of all BC Hydro customers. BC Hydro has not yet issued its response to the claim filed July 25 on

behalf of representative plaintiff Nomi Davis. It demands free choice “without extortive fees, coercion or conditions designed to intimidate.” Registering with the lawsuit costs $100. The provincial government has indicated those who still have analog power meters they want to keep will be able to pay around $20 a month extra to continue manual meter readings.

Opponents aren’t happy with the fees or Hydro indications that smart meters may still replace analog ones as they break down. They also say those with smart meters should have the ability to turn off wireless transmissions. “The opt-out option that Hydro is offering needs to be a legitimate one,” White Rock resident Linda Ewart said. “What they need to say

is, ‘If you don’t want one of these meters, you don’t need to have them.’” Another concern over choice is what happens when someone moves to a new home and a smart meter is already installed. Many objectors claim health concerns or sensitivity to radio-frequency waves, even though third-party tests have found emissions from smart meters are low compared to other sources. BC Hydro officials say the lead plaintiff’s analog meter was broken and had to be replaced for safety reasons. “BC Hydro will work through the judicial process to explain why we are obligated to replace a customer’s meter when there is potential for a safety hazard,” said Greg Reimer, executive vice-president of transmission and distribution. He said both the B.C. Court of Appeal and B.C. Utilities Commission have previously dismissed smart meter legal challenges and that Hydro has “acted at all times within the law.”

CRANBROOK ARCHERY CLUB

Local archers return from national championship TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Local archers let their arrows fly at the Canadian National Archery Championships last week, striking a few podium spots along the way. A five-member crew consisting of Adam Pitney and his sister, Krista, along with Brittany Johnson, Darby Dean and Jordan Adachi, all made the trek to New Brunswick to take their shot at the best Canada has to offer. Led by Cranbrook Archery Club youth director Elaine Johnson, the crew headed to Woodstock—not the same town that hosted the legendary music concert—and spent just over a week competing in three different categories. To kick things off, they challenged for the Fred Usher Cup, a team competition for provincial teams to go headto-head. With three names drawn at random, three of the Cranbrook Archery Club shooters went up against Alberta and scored a substantial win. Quebec was next up and the two teams were deadlocked after the final round. “These guys shot their socks off and it came to a tie, so they each had one arrow and they tied again,” said Johnson. “So what it came to, was X’s. We had one arrow in the X and they had one arrow in the X.” Quebec was able to

gain an edge through a handicap scoring system and advanced, eventually capturing the cup. The team then moved to a 3D shoot, then into field and FITA (french acronym for Federation Internationale de Tir à l’Arc) events, but had to fight with some pretty disruptive weather.

“Their arrows are doing things they don’t normally do, their strings are stretching, so it was a challenge, but they all did really well” Elaine Johnson “Out here, we can prep for the wind, because we can get some place, we can prep for the heat and the bugs, but how do you prep for rain?” said Johnson. “…The kids had a really, really rough 3D round and then the girls had lost their marks, but they said, all in all, the courses were really good and quite difficult.” The humidity also played a factor, Johnson added. “Everything just changes,” she said. “Their arrows are doing things they don’t normally do, their strings are stretching, so it was a challenge, but they all did really well.” However, things eventually cleared up for the FITA portion of

the event. Johnson took a gold in field and a silver in FITA. Krista Pitney won a silver in field and in open, along with a bronze in FITA, while Darby Dean took a bronze in field, and two golds in FITA and open. Three of the five shooters—Brittany Johnson, Adam Pitney and Darby Dean—will head to the World Juniors in China in October. All three agreed that the outdoor nationals was a good experience that will help when they’re on the field in China. “[At] nationals, I shot with most of the people that I’ll be going to China with,” said Adam Pitney, “so it helped me get to know them a little better, and I know what I’m going to be shooting with when I get there, so that helps, that helps a lot.” While nationals featured the Canadian cream of the crop, there was also some international shooters that came out, which was helpful for Brittany Johnson. “There was also some U.S. visitors, so I watched how they shot and saw how good I should be shooting, because they’re very good,” she said. The three constantly practicing at the outdoor archery range and hope to shoot well in China, regardless of how they place when it all finishes. “I want to always remember that everyone else is competing and

Oilers hire Oil Kings’ GM to bolster scouting efforts C ANADIAN PRESS

EDMONTON - Despite landing NCAA free agent Justin Schultz a year ago, the Edmonton Oilers weren’t satisfied with their track record in the college market. So on Wednesday they announced the hiring of Bob Green as director of amateur free-agent scouting. The former general manager of the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings will mostly be responsible for recruiting NCAA and CHL players. “Even though it’s the NHL,

you’ve still got to recruit,” Green said. “The high-end free agents that you’re chasing after have a lot of interest from other teams, so you’ve got to have a good story to tell about Edmonton and the Oilers and you’ve got to be able to attract those guys and get them there. It’s one thing to find them based on ability, it’s another thing getting them here.” Stu MacGregor remains head of amateur scouting, something general manager Craig MacTavish emphasized after the team’s initial press re-

lease called Green the team’s director of amateur and freeagent scouting. MacTavish called it a “coup” for the organization to hire Green for this role. “There are a lot of people that slip through the draft and give us further opportunity,” MacTavish said. “To have a guy with Bob’s credibility in the CHL that’ll be able to open the doors and really enhance our ability to attract and sign very good players coming in to our organization.” Green, the WHL’s executive

of the year in 2011-12 and 2012-13, had been Oil Kings GM for the past six seasons. The Oil Kings won the WHL in 2011-12 and advanced to the Memorial Cup. The 52-year-old called returning to his passion of scouting an opportunity that was too good to turn down. “It’s easier to leave after you’ve had success than if you haven’t,” Green said. Now Green’s focus is to help the Oilers have success, specifically in regard to signing college and over-age CHL players.

Patriots QB Tom Brady returns to practice after hurting knee FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Tom Brady is back at practice one day after hurting his knee. The New England Patriots quarterback is taking part in the third day of joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It isn’t known if he’ll play Friday night when the teams meet in an exhibition game. Brady jogged from sideline to sideline with his teammates at the start of practice. He sprained his left knee about midway through Wednesday’s practice when Tampa Bay defensive end Adrian Clayborn knocked New England left tackle Nate Solder into him. Brady fell down and left the field briefly. He returned for several more plays before walking off under his own power. Associated Press

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Reach out for someone else or seek out another perspective if you are not comfortable with what you are hearing. A partner softens up considerably. New beginnings are possible if both parties are willing to talk. Don’t push; you have time. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You see a situation differently because of feedback from a partner. Approach an associate with care, who might feel cornered or disappointed. Your efforts are appreciated. Put your best foot forward, and others naturally will join in. Tonight: Reach out for someone at a distance. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Indulge a child or loved one who now seems to be more willing to cooperate. What generates could last for a substantial time if the spirit of cooperation remains. A group discussion draws many opinions. Opinions are just that -- opinions. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Pace yourself, though you might want to have a lengthy talk with someone who is family or feels like family. Maintain a steady pace as you eye what has to be done. Be aware of what the costs of a purchase are, even if it improves the quality of your life. Tonight: Meet up with a friend. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might want to review some decisions you are about to make. You will see important results once others understand that you will claim your power. They will also need to know what your expectations are. Just be clear. Tonight: Get into the spirit of the moment. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Take your time moving forward, especially if you are not sure which way to go. You could test the waters. Friends and associates offer feedback, but ultimately the choice is yours and only yours. A gesture draws a caring response. Tonight: TGIF. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your conversation multiplies the possibilities in your mind. You

For Better or Worse

have a set of expectations and desires; the time has come to express them. Only then can others or another person respond. Don’t make the assumption that the other person just knows -- he or she doesn’t necessarily. Tonight: Return calls. Initiate calls. Then decide. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You often hold back or don’t disclose the whole story. Though your feelings could be intensified by keeping some details private, the result might not be positive. Do use your intuition with funds right now. A talk with a respected associate about this risk might be wise. Tonight: Complete what must be done, then decide. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Use your strong personality and taste for adventure to encourage others to forge a new path. You find someone has strong feelings about you. This not-sosecret admirer gives you a lot to consider. Tonight: Invite others to join in your TGIF traditions. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have reason to maintain

a low profile. In a sense, you are a tiger crouched behind a bush, ready to pounce when the timing is right. Still, you quietly gain information. Don’t forget to touch base with an older or respected friend. Tonight: Nap first. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Follow another’s lead who clearly seems more directed and energized. A call or contact from a distance forces you to stop and make a decision, or at least consider your options regarding a decision. Tonight: Head out early. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might be getting a little too much attention for your taste. Nevertheless, you gracefully move forward and assume the lead. You get a lot of support from a loved one or dear friend who eases your passage into this role. Tonight: Only where the action lies. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My daughter-in-law tends to go to her family. She says she is uncomfortable with my son’s side. She has been rude to us since she married my son, and she controls him. She threatens him if he does not do what she wants. My daughter had a fight with my daughterin-law four years ago, and I just woke up to the fact that my daughter-in-law blames us for my daughter’s actions. My husband and I tried therapy with my son and daughter-inlaw, but it made things worse. I left, saying that I am not happy with either of them and I just want to see my grandchildren. My son said that if I don’t continue with therapy, I won’t see the kids again. They are using the children as weapons to control us. I told her she didn’t like us from Day One. She told me she doesn’t trust me. My new granddaughter had a baptism, and my daughter-in-law told us it was an occasion only for her family. We were insulted and hurt. I’m thinking of going to court and suing for grandparents’ rights. -- Trustworthy Dear Trustworthy: Your son and his wife may not be behaving in a kind or loving way, but there is room for improvement on both sides. They are willing to go for counseling to resolve this, which is a good sign. But walking out of a counseling session because you don’t like what you hear is not productive. The point of counseling is to work through the issues that get in the way of a better relationship. Please stop trying to get your son to favor you over his wife. It won’t happen. The more you blame her the more defensive they both will be. If you want to be in his life and see those grandkids, we urge you to agree to go back for counseling and really work on it with an open mind. Dear Annie: I recently married a man who is quite wonderful, but he won’t help out around the house. We have a child together, and I am the breadwinner. When I’m not working, I’m cleaning the house and picking up after him. Once in a while, he may do a chore or two, but that’s it. We’ve had many talks about this, and he always agrees to do things when I ask. But I still come home from work and find nothing done, and he has plenty of excuses. He will be 30 soon. He was not raised this way, and his mother has tried to help, but we can’t seem to make any progress. What can I do? This is driving me insane -- Maid on Demand and Sick of It Dear Maid: Can you afford periodic cleaning help? Would you be willing to relax your standards a bit? Can you stop picking up after your husband? Could you save the housecleaning for weekends and make it a joint effort? Sometimes, this is simply a matter of disorganization, in which case a list and a reminder might work. You cannot force your husband to grow up, but you can help him understand that this type of issue will erode a marriage over time, making one partner resentful and turning the other into a recalcitrant child. He needs to step up. Dear Annie: I, too, have suffered from depression all my life. It took courage to finally seek help, because you think you’re “crazy” and fear the stigma of admitting something is wrong. I thought the gap between where I was and being “normal’ was as wide as the Grand Canyon. In fact, it’s only as wide as a couple of pills. It took a few tries before I found the medication that works best for me. Once I “came out,” I discovered that several people I work with are also on antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication. -- Been There, Too.
