Over 170 arts, culture and heritage projects— including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour— have received a total of $706,000.00 in funding support for the 2013 –2014 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “The CKCA Steering Committee was pleased to be able to supply CBT funding to good projects all across the Basin. We hope cultural organizations will start thinking about activities that will be happening between June 2014 and May 2015 and planning their applications now for the next funding cycle.” said Jacquie Hamilton, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair. CKCA administers and manages arts, culture and heritage program funding on behalf of CBT. Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the CKCA Steering Committee, with input from community arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including individual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions and heritage capital projects. “Arts, culture and heritage are fundamental to who we are as Basin residents and integral to community well being in the Columbia Basin,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “We fully support CKCA in its efforts to build long-term sustainability for artists and to strengthen and support arts, culture and heritage organizations.” CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize heritage projects and projects in all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts. For a list of funded projects, visit the CKCA website at w w w. b a s i n c u l t u r e . com or call 1-877-5057355.

Twelve-year-old wins national medal
Photo Lorne eckersLey
Kaeden Rendek with his silver medal
By Lorne Eckersley In a performance that might have been inspired by Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier, Creston’s Kaeden Rendek has brought home a silver medal from the 2013 Canadian Judo Champion-ships. Valois-Fortier spent three days in Creston in April, presenting a series of seminars at the Creston Judo Club. He brought his Olympic medal, too. Rendek dutifully opens the case that holds his Canadian Judo Championships silver medal and beams. The medal, about the size of a beer coaster, and much, much heavier, is a first for Creston. The 12-year-old judoka is this area’s first-ever national medallist in his chosen sport. “It isn’t as heavy as Antoine’s,” laughs Kaeden’s father, Terry Rendek, “but it’s beautiful, isn’t it?” The lead-up to Kaeden’s medal-winning efforts came after nearly a year of travel to tournaments in Prince
George, Edmonton, Montreal, Fernie, Invermere, Regina and five in the Lower Mainland. “I had a lot of qualifiers — I had to go to Saskatchewan to fight in the Saskatchewan Open Championships with the B.C. team,” Kaeden said on Friday. “I won both of my matches and I won a gold medal. That pushed me farther and farther ahead of my competitors in B.C., and when I went to regional tournaments I would beat them and that would put me higher in points. To qualify for the nationals, it’s all about points.” The Canadian nationals were held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, constructed to host speed skating events in the 2010 Winter Olympics. With four mats in the arena (a single mat is all that the Adam Robertson Elementary School gym can hold), two skating rinks, a dozen or two ping-pong tables, a huge fitness centre and four basketball courts, the Richmond facility might have felt a little overwhelming — especially with as many as 5,000 attending the fights. “I really cancelled out the crowd until the last match,” Kaeden said. “We’ve done a lot of focusing exercise and practice, so I eventually just blocked out the crowd.” After spending two days doing warmups and watching older competitors in the U-18 and U-21 age divisions, Kaeden said he was ready for action on day 3. “[For my] first match I walked out and I was
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A5 kind of nervous, but I Xed out the crowd and just stared at my opponent. I threw him for an ippon, which was a win — he landed flat on his back. I felt comfortable after getting all those butterflies out — I just wanted to get onto the next match. “For my second match I warmed up and I watched my opponent’s previous match to study what he was doing. My coaches came down and we diagnosed it. We discussed how I could counter and what throws would be good for me to use against him. I went in and he had a really tough gi (uniform). I grabbed him and bent my nails back. It was like grabbing a brick wall and I had to fight through the pain. I grabbed him — and this is something my sensei and I had been practicing — I tightened up on his arm and flipped out his leg. And I got the win, which I was pretty proud of, because my dad told me earlier when we checked the U-15 brackets (18 fighters in total) — ‘Two fights and you’re in; you can get a medal.’ ” With two wins under his belt, the reality of his situation began to set in. “I finished my second match and I was so proud and happy, then I started thinking about my final match and I was like, ‘I don’t know
if I can win this.’ I tried to believe in myself, though. “Once I got on the mat I was rid of all my butterflies. I was warmed up and ready to go. We fought all the way to regulation time — three minutes. Then, 2:42 into the overtime round, he threw me. Just before that, I threw him and that would have won me the gold medal, but the referees on the side waived it off.” He came about as close as possible to walking away with a gold medal. “I was really disappointed in myself that I didn’t win the gold medal and I thought everybody was going to be mad at me,” he said. “Then I got off the mat and everybody started hugging me and I was just like, ‘Wow, you’re not mad that I lost?’ “They said, ‘No, you’re the first guy from Creston to ever medal.’ I was really mad at myself, but after I thought about it — a silver medal is better than nothing.” Only then did Kaeden mention that his victorious opponent was, at 14, two years older, and the Quebec provincial champion. Afterward, the medallists, including the two fighters Kaeden had defeated earlier (they each won a bronze), mounted the Olympic podium to accept their awards. “I looked up at him

(the gold medal winner) and said, ‘You are a good fighter and I want to fight you again one day.’ I stood on the podium as proud as I could be.” Well aware of the behind the scenes efforts made to get him and his Creston Judo Club teammates Leelen Samuelson and Trennin Lifely to the competitions, Kaeden is quick to express his appreciation. “I’d like to thank all the people in the club who volunteered to help me train. All the parents for volunteering in bottle drives and hot dog sales to send guys like us to the Nationals. I’d also like to thank my three coaches, sensei Ben Reinhart, sensei Mitsuya Aikba and Leelen Samuelson.” His dad added to the list, thanking financial sponsors that include Columbia Basin Trust, the Town of Creston, and Regional District of Central Kootenay Areas B and C.

There appears to be a tempest brewing as the Regional District of East Kootenay forges ahead with changing home-based business regulations. Recently, the board voted (nine to six in favour) of drafting new bylaws that would change the types of business allowed in the district, outside of municipalities. Minor home-based businesses, for example childcare, would be allowed in the region. Major business, like a sawmill, would be allowed in parts of electoral areas around Sparwood and Cranbrook, with approval for the Cranbrook area being given depending on what the business is. The group of directors against this move cites a lack of fire protection and “harmony” in rural areas as reasons to stop this regulation overhaul. There are problems with those arguments. To begin with, we live in shaky economic times and it’s not so much that people would jump into the rural sawmill or mechanic businesses, it is that they already are doing it. This isn’t because the majority of these individuals
are shady; instead it is because they have the land, time, skills and need to set up the business. Area A director Mike Sosnowski said it best when he noted, “It’s mostly for individuals that are loggers or who have small trucking companies or backyard mechanical—that they are allowed to keep the business that they presently have by making them legal.” Legal. That is the operative word here. People will, especially in a depressed economy, do what they have to do to make a living. Recognizing that and helping them means a whole host of local benefits. To begin with, making these businesses legal will encourage (and force) the owners to pay taxes on those earnings, get proper insurance (especially fire) and to feel like they are supported by a district that understands rural life. It’s not as if the new bylaws would mean a host of large-scale industrial manufacturers would set up shop out in the boondocks and deprive municipalities of tax revenue. Those types of businesses require huge amounts of infrastructure and enjoy incentives that are only available right next to
or in a municipality. It’s also not “opening the door” to a host of problems as suggested by one director. It is understood that as the changes are being drafted to the regulations, the businesses will be approved each on their own merits. This is an important distinction, as currently, the businesses operating without regulation have no oversight whatsoever as the owners don’t want to draw attention to themselves. There was a reason why people moved to, and stay in the East Kootenay region as opposed to moving to Calgary and it sure wasn’t the money. It is the land, the animals and most importantly, the freedom that attracts and keeps residents living here. Anything the Regional District can do to help make that easier should be welcome news.

natural health by Trent Brereton, ND
Something is fishy...
In July of this year the media jumped on news that too much fish oil might increase prostate cancer. Having practiced naturopathic medicine and used fish oils for 16 years, I was very surprised to hear this information. Looking into this study I was impressed by the source: Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a highly reputable peer reviewed journal. The fish oil data was pulled from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial, which has been criticized for using synthetic (not natural) vitamin E in extremely high doses not normally seen in practice. Further, this study was not designed to examine the effects of fish oil, which makes the results less reliable. In fact, there is no evidence that people in the Selenium Study took fish oils or even ate fish. To reach the conclusion that fish oil might increase the risk of prostate cancer, researchers measured the levels of EPA, DPA and DHA (omega three fats found in fish and sea vegetables) and concluded that men with the highest concentrations had an increased risk of prostate cancer. The non-cancer patients

were reported to have levels of omega three fats of 3.62% while the cancer patients were found to have omega three levels greater than 3.68%. Even moderate fish consumption increases the percent of omega three fats above 3.68%. So, if the conclusions of the study were accurate, aggressive prostate cancer would be a major problem in any population with even moderate fish consumption. Population studies designed to examine the role of fish oils show just the opposite result of the conclusions reached in this study. Prostate cancer disease and death rates are among the lowest in countries consuming traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets (both high in fish). A 2010 study designed to specifically study the role of fish oil and prostate cancer found that fish oils reduced prostate cancer mortality by 63%. Given the abundance of research supporting the use of fish oils and the poor design of the Selenium study, I continue to recommend that men (and women) supplement with a high quality fish oil to promote health and treat disease.

We all have different goals when deciding to start or return to college. College of the Rockies recognizes that and believes in letting you create your journey. You might want to complete an entire program at one of their seven campuses or you might want to start here, in the Kootenays, before transferring to another institution. Are you too busy to get to a campus? You could take online courses while working and taking care of your family. Whatever you goal College of the Rockies wants to help you find the path that works for you. Why consider College of the Rockies for your post-secondary education? Quality programs, quality services and quality instruction. That’s what 93% of the graduating class said about College of the Rockies in a 2012 Student Exit Survey. They liked the smaller class sizes, friendly professional faculty and staff, great student support services, personalized attention and
flexible course delivery. There are other advantages to starting your post-secondary education at your regional college. A report by Simon Fraser University indicates that, overall, students who transfer to university from college are more likely to be successful in their studies than those who enter university directly from secondary school. With very affordable tuition fees you can take two years of university studies courses at College of the Rockies then transfer to the university of your choice for two additional years and receive a degree in your field of study. Or you could choose to stay for four years and complete a degree right here in the Kootenays. In today’s economy you may be contemplating a career change. With programs including Adult Basic Education, University Studies, Business Administration, Child, Youth and Family Studies, Office Administration, Tourism, Kinesiology, Trades, Health Care

Provincial awards revised Beginning in September 2013, the Provincial Awards Program will be revised to provide school districts with greater flexibility and better align with the BC Education Plan. The revisions will phase out the Passport to Education over the next three years. This change coincides with our ongoing development of district/authority awards, where students will have more areas to qualify for post-secondary awards and scholarships. These areas will better align with the goals of the BC Education Plan and allow more students to be recognized for their unique interests like trades, Aboriginal languages, volunteer activity or technology education. Within these broad categories, districts will have greater discretion to locally manage allocations, tailoring their decisions to the unique demographics of their community. The Passport to Education Program will be phased out starting with Grade 10 in 2013, Grade 11 in 2014 and Grade 12 in 2015. Students who have already earned Passports to Education in their grade 10, 11 or 12 year will still receive their award. No new Passports will be awarded to incoming Grade 10 students. The Passport to Education Program was outdated and administratively complex to deliver. Additional work and consultations will occur over the coming year to further define the categories and award allocation process. The Graduation Program Examination Scholarship, the Secondary School Apprenticeship, and the Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship still will be offered.
