Ratepayers Association takes pro-active election approach By Treena Mielke
Big Foot strikes: The Big Foot Car Crusher was a crowd favorite on Aug. 25 at the racing oval. The truck was driven by Rick Long from St. Louis and sponsored by Parkland Automotive Repair from Rimbey. As the car crusher crunched the cars beneath its wheels the crowd cheered and, for the few minutes it lasted, the excitement was high. APN Photo
With the municipal fall election looming, the Rimbey Ratepayers Association is preparing to do its part to help voters make the best choices for the people who will govern their community. The association held its first meeting Aug. 26 in the basement of the Beatty House. Although only a handful of residents showed up, it was an informative meeting, and it appears those in attendance are willing to work hard to inform the public about the candidates. A few new faces were seen around the table at the meeting. They came because they wanted to be better informed about the choices the candidates. “I live here. I pay taxes,” said Louise Craig “Curiosity,” said Jan Boyarzin. “I was curious to see whose running. I’m sure it has to be a big responsibility,” she added. Secretary Christine Seidel said it is important to get people involved. “The ratepayers are only as strong as the number of people (who participate),” she said. Discussion at the meeting centred on ways to best get information to the public. Sending a letter to each candidate and including relevant questions was discussed as was coming up with a report card type evaluation of the current council members. However, the report card suggestion was discarded. “It is kind of a like a survey, and you’ve got to be careful the way the questions are asked,” said David Coambs. “The election is actually the report card,” added his wife, Joan. Neville Roper believes councillors need to come up with ways to keep the downtown alive. “New subdivisions put a knife right down Main Street,” said Florence Stemo. Continued on Page 12

Ukraine orphan enjoys summer in Rimbey By Treena Mielke He loves to shoot hoops, ride his bike and hang out at the pool. He is friendly, gregarious and has a smile that shines brighter than the sun. On Aug. 22, 10-yearold Ruslan said goodbye to his Canadian family, loaded up his suitcases and all his luggage and travelled back to his home at an orphanage in Ukraine. Ruslan came to Rimbey on July 5 to live with Bernie and Deb Rist as part of a summer orphan hosting program made available through Frontier Horizons, a U.S.-based organization and The World For Children, in Ukraine. Deb Rist and her husband decided to apply for the summer hosting program after learning it was now available in Canada. Once they applied, the process moved quickly, she said. “We signed up in Standing in the back are Bernie and Deb Rist with Dmitriy Subotenko April and he was here by who will be the chaperone for the children going back to the Ukraine. This is the first year in Canada,” she said. “We were pleased we were able to take part. It’s a great program.” Bringing the little visitor home and integrating him into their big, happy family was an interesting experience, not without its challenges. Debbie Rist The language barrier was somewhat of a problem with Ruslan first arrived but as time wore on, he and the fact he couldn’t speak English didn’t stop him.” Dmitriy Subotenko, co-founder of The World for his summer host family became more adept at commuChildren, took Ruslan and nine other children who took nicating. “We did lots of charades,” said Mrs. Rist. “We soon part in the program back to Ukraine. “They are sad to go back,” he said. “There are tears figured out what worked and what didn’t. A biological mother of seven children, one adopted on both sides. They have experienced a taste of what it daughter and a grandma of one, Rist found Ruslan, with is like to be part of a family.” “That taste will give them hope of what is possible,” his ready smile and enthusiastic attitude, quickly made added Mr. Rist. his way into her heart. The goal of the Frontier Horizon travel program is “It is hard to let him go. It’s been worth it — worth every minute. If the funds were there, we would do it to raise awareness of the children’s needs to foster the improvement of the health, education and general welagain.” She recalled the many fun activities the family en- fare of all orphan children in Ukraine. Individuals and families are encouraged to host joyed with Ruslan throughout the summer such as boating and tubing. She said it was difficult to explain to children even if they are not interested in adoption. The him the importance of wearing a life-jacket in the lake, Frontier Horizon Program is primarily a travel program, as he did not understand the imminent danger the lake and not all children are adoptable, although many are presented. But, he finally got the idea and the family available for adoption or are in the process of becoming enjoyed the delight of watching the little guy experience available for adoption. A fundraising father/daughter bike trip has raised close to $5,000 for a worthy charity with more donations coming in. Emily Falk, and dad, Don, meat manager at the Rimbey Co-op, rode their bikes from Red Deer to Linden, near Three Hills and back, to raise the money for the RAJO Women’s Literacy School, a program of the Global Enrichment Foundation. The pair left Aug. 26, spent the night in Linden and returned Aug. 27. “It was a great experience,” said Falk, who rode to Canmore with her dad last year to raise money for the same worthy cause. “We had a little bit of rain and a strong headwind slowed us down, but for the most part the sun was shining.” She said having her dad join her on her fundraising missions is wonderful. “I’m so happy he’s into it. OPINION
Wasn’t that the party! It started off as an item on my summer bucket list, scribbled in haste on the back of a crumpled envelope hidden in the dark recesses of my purse. Have backyard party! I have since drawn a black line through those words. It happened. And, for whatever Treena Mielke reason — perhaps the On The Other Side stars were aligned just right and because of that — the universe was perfectly willing to smile on us all — it worked. It was perfect; well, as close to perfect as humanly possibly. It seems lots of people go on summer holidays where they are handed huge chunks of time to do nothing but hang out and practice learning how to relax. I couldn’t see that happening in my world, but I could, if I defied logic and common sense, visualize a party. Of course “have a party” are only black and white words and I realized I needed to color them with bold strokes of passion, imagination and planning to bring them to life. Besides, I didn’t want just “a party,” I wanted “the party.” I wanted the kind of party people talk about when it is winter and they are looking for a warm memory to wrap themselves up in. And so along with the invitations I sent out, I visualized people; lots of people hanging out, laughing, sipping a drink, and lounging against my fence, which used to be white, but now is kind of grey and peeling. And I imagined the music — the kind of music that is like wine for the soul and works really well to soften the edges of the harshest realities life often hands out with no particular thought to balancing the scales of fairness. I wanted little kids running around and grandpas and grandmas hanging out, and parents keeping a watchful eye on their offspring — but not too watchful — because they were in a backyard, for crying out loud, complete with a fence! And I wanted the gentle sounds of people’s laughter to be embraced by the muted softness of a magical night in summer. And I’ll be darned if it didn’t all happen. Holy cow! I couldn’t even believe it. At 7:01 p.m. I was ready. The rented tent was set up, the tables complete with red tablecloths and centrepieces of fresh flowers were in place. A bottle of wine was carefully placed at each table, surrounded by crystal wine glasses. And the silent auction, with all proceeds to go to the MS Society, that my sister had poured her bubbly enthusiasm all over, was ready. I took a camera and somebody’s phone off the nearest table and surveyed the Better Homes and Gardens picture perfect page of perfection with satisfaction. My satisfaction was short lived, however, and soon replaced by terror. No one was here. It was now 7:02. At 7:05, I began pacing in front of my house. At 7:06 I lit a cigarette, even though I knew at least one of my kids would probably see me and be disgusted. Where were they? The guests. And the musicians. Did I have the wrong night? What had I done? Who was I to think I could put on a party, any kind of a party, even a small, little party? Of course, no one would come. I could feel hot, scalding tears falling over my Better Homes and Gardens party page, smudging it to a blurry mess. And then, just as I inhaled another huge lungful of reproach, they came. The people. The musicians. The moms, the dads, the friends, the kids. They all came, lighting up the dark stage of the night just like I had visualized. It’s over now. But, in my mind, I can still see and hear it all. Wow It was good, it was better than good, it was great. But wait until next year. Next year I’ll have a committee!
Is Syrian dilemma unwinnable? A dilemma is by its very nature a choice between evils, and that is what now faces other countries over the use of poison gas in Syria. All the options may be “on the table,” but none of them are good. Nobody denies poison gas was used in rebel-held parts of Damascus on Aug. 21 — not even the Syrian government. As many as 1,000 civilians may have been killed. That’s a whole week’s normal death toll in the Syrian civil war in just one day. After that, however, we run out of facts. The rebels claim the Baathist regime was responsible, while the Syrian government says the rebels did it themselves in the hope of triggering foreign military intervention. Sending United Nations inspectors will not settle that argument: the gas must have come from government stocks but that doesn’t mean the regime did it. The rebels have not overrun any of the known storage sites for Syrian chemical weapons but they could have secret supporters inside those sites who smuggled some out to them. If you apply the old test of “who benefits?” the rebels, who are losing ground, have a strong incentive to get the Assad regime blamed for using illegal weapons. If that gets the United States and other western powers to impose a no-fly zone, or bomb the regime’s military bases, it helps the rebel cause. So maybe they acted to provide the necessary “evidence.” Some of them are certainly ruthless enough. The regime is certainly ruthless enough to use chemical weapons and it actually owns them but it is manifestly not to its advantage to do so. President Bashar al-Assad’s troops are winning the war without them and the last thing he needs is foreign military intervention. On the other hand, armies and regimes have done exceptionally stupid things in the past, particularly when they are isolated and under great pressure. The emerging consensus among western governments is
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist that Assad was responsible, however stupid that seems. What should be done about it? US military intervention is unlikely to lead to the outcome American foreign policy really desires: the preservation of Syria’s existing secular state, with a change of leadership at the top. If Assad is overthrown, he’ll probably pull the whole edifice down with him. If the rebels win, Islamist radicals will take over. So if a western military intervention is bound to end in tears, why not just skip it? Because chemical weapons are classed as “weapons of mass destruction” and there is an international treaty banning their use. If you let Assad get away with this, goes the argument, he will have breached an important international taboo on the use of WMD. Well, not really. Biological weapons (“germ warfare”) are truly horrifying weapons of mass destruction, banned by treaty and nobody has ever used them. Nuclear weapons can kill by the billions; they have never been banned but they haven’t been used in war for 68 years now. Poison gas, however, is not really a weapon of mass destruction at all. Napalm, fuel-air explosives and cluster bombs are just as nasty as poison gas and perfectly legal. The historic ban on poison gas is a valuable deterrent but it has survived some previous breaches and preventing this one is not worth a war. Especially if it is, from the point of view of the potential interveners, an unwinnable war. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Go Girls program launched By Treena Mielke A mentoring program designed to help girls come through their early teens with their self-esteem intact will be launched in Rimbey and Bluffton this month. Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, is a program that promotes active living, balanced eating and feeling good for girls aged 12 to 14. The eightweek program is to begin in Bluffton Sept. 13. It is to be offered at Rimbey schools on a rotation and will be presented by Annette Peck of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Melissa Kuipers of Youth Unlimited. The eight-week program is to provide the girls with information and support as well as encourage healthy choices, resulting in long-term wellness. During the sessions, the importance of physical activity, balanced eating habits and positive self-image will be emphasized. “I feel young women today need better strategies to combat all of the unhealthy influences coming at them from many directions,” said Peck. “They need to learn how to value and take care of themselves, as well as how to appreciate and develop their strengths.” Peck said positive communication and strong relationships and learning
to trust their own judgment as opposed to media and peer pressure to look and act a certain way will also be part of the program’s criteria. “I am excited about the information we are about to share and the fun way it is presented through the Go Girls! program. Activity levels tend to decrease at this age and many young women struggle with what society expects of them, emotionally and physically. This is when unhealthy habits start and become very hard to break later in life.” Peck said the program could expand in the future to include Game On! The basketball-themed version for boys. The Go Girls! program was developed in 2001 through partnerships with OPHEA, The University of Toronto’s Centre for Girls and Women’s Health and Physical Activity and the nutrition resource centre. In July 2006 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, previously a community partner, took full ownership of the program. September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month. Call Annette at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office at 403843-1066 with questions about the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program or the regular mentorship program.

Poor showing at open house and fundraiser for fitness centre By Treena Mielke

Build it and they will come. While this philosophy may have worked well in the Field of Dreams, it appears few people showed up to check out the expansion and renovations to Rimbey’s fitness centre, although fitness stations were set up and activities planned. Thirty people showed up for the open house and fundraiser Aug. 24. “It was disappointing to see the poor turnout,” said Jan Lucas, who stopped by to check out the fitness centre and the activity stations. “It was amazing and it would have been a blast for kids to try.” During the open house, held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. trained instructors were on hand to demonstrate how to use fitness equipment and play indoor games. Tammy Frietag, a personal trainer from the fitness centre, said the event needs to be better advertised to attract more people. She said organizers are hoping next year the event will be bigger and better. However, although the numbers were few, those who did show up had a great time, she said. “The obstacle course was the most
popular and it was fun. Actually it was brutal.” The town has invested $20,000 in the fitness centre in the community centre. During the last few months the centre has been expanded, security improved, the walls painted and new equipment added. Mirrors have been replaced, a spinner bike added, treadmills replaced and a storage rack built. A new television has been installed and the area painted. Usage of the centre and memberships have increased since the expansion, said Peter Stenstrom, director of community services. “I think the town made a very good investment.” Frietag said the changes have been positive. “They have added better cardio equipment that actually works. Overall the buzz around town has been very positive. It has been great as nothing had been done to improve the fitness centre for a long time.” Frietag said plans are underway to hold the fundraising annually. “We are looking at other ideas such as businesses challenging other businesses,” she said.

Rimbey men’s soceer team finish playoffs with silver medal By Treena Mielke The Rimbey men’s soccer team bounced back from a fourth place standing in league play to win a silver medal in the playoffs. The team narrowly missed out on a gold medal, losing to Red Deer FC Soccer team 1-0. Player/manager Einar Olsen said Rimbey held its own against Red Deer but simply couldn’t get the ball in the net. “We probably outshot them 5 – 1, but we couldn’t hit the net. It’s the goals that count.” Olsen said the team had a good season. “They fought their way back from being in
fourth place at the end of the regular season, taking out the first place team, FC United in the semifinal round which got settled in a shoot-out.” Most of the players on the team are from Rimbey and have been together for five or six years and several of them played minor soccer here. The Rimbey team is in the Central Alberta Men’s Soccer league. With the exception of Olds and Rimbey, the teams are all from Red Deer. The indoor season for the soccer league will begin in October with most games to be played at the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer.

Bentley car show wheels in more participants By June Norvila Bentley’s Show and Shine had been chosen for the theme for this year’s fair, and it did get more entries despite threatening weather earlier. The 16th annual Kroozin’ West Show and Shine, centred on Railway Avenue and the treed and grassed areas there, saw an increase of almost 25 entries over last year resulting in more than 130 registered vehicles. “We had a steady stream of spectators as we always do. It’s what makes car guys want to come to our show,” stated Rick Park, Revmasters Car Club spokesman. “It was another successful show with lots of positive feedback. We are so proud of the support Bentley and area gives us each year, and we want to thank everybody who in any way helps us to make this the event that it is. We would like to thank our volunteers who come early and stay late, and make our show what it is.” Once again the format was to pick the Top 10 instead of having a variety of distinct categories. Trophies were once again a special design. This year they were 3-D ceramic wall plaques depicting several collector cars in front of a drive-in movie sign. Placing in the Top 10, in no particular order were: the 1956 Belair Convert-
ible of Maryann Brooker from Blackfalds; the 1935 Chev Truck of Tom Christenson from Blackfalds; a 1968 Firebird belonging to Jason Cole of Lacombe; Barry Cunningham’s 1933 Ford from Gull Lake; the 1955 Chev of Don and Sue Daines from Calgary; the 1957 Morris Minor of Ken Davison from Sherwood Park; Penhold’s Bill Larratt’s 1928 Ford Model A; Derrick Peterson’s 1957 Chev from Red Deer; the 1968 GTX convertible of Neil and Sandra Polson from Consort; and Grant Salmon’s 1970 Chevelle from Lacombe. Voted Best in Show was Neil and Sandra Polson’s 1968 GTX and the Mayor’s Choice was Maryanne Brooker’s 1956 Belair. Peoples Choice again was Danny Johnson’s 1969 Road Runner from Bentley, and the Furthest Travelled went to Frances Evans from Altario with his 1957 Chev wagon. In What Else Ya’ Got (a category for all things other than cars or trucks that includes motorcycles and tractors) the winner was the 1939 John Deere D tractor of Mel Deines from Sylvan Lake. Both the car show and the Saturday evening fireworks are coordinated by members of the Bentley Revmasters Car Club, with support from the Bentley Ag Society, and rely on lots of help from many volunteers to run the show, many

year’s fireworks and $500 to sponsor an event for Bentley’s 100th anniversary in 2015. The mid-day food concession of the Bentley volunteer fire department ran alongside the show and augments the popular fair and rodeo event.
With summer days slowly winding to a close, it’s time to think about fall and winter activities and organized sports. To help the community do this as efficiently and quickly as possible, a mass registration fair will be held Sept. 5 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre. Pete Stenstrom, director of community services, said the fair is a win/win situation for both the organization and the registrants.
“We always have a really good turnout, especially at the beginning. It’s not an event where you need to register to have a table. But it is a good idea to show up before 3 and get set up at a table.” Stenstrom said the town will put out a table where sports equipment that has been left at the community centre will be free for the taking. He also suggests anyone who wants to give away used equipment set up a table. “They can even put a small price on it if they want to,” he said. “We will be happy to give people a table. It is almost like a sports swap.”

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome detected in central zone Following confirmation of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in an individual from a rural community in central zone, Alberta Health Services is advising area residents, and all Albertans, to take simple precautions to protect themselves. “Because humans can be exposed to hantavirus when the urine or feces of an infected rodent — such as a mouse — become airborne, anyone who disturbs areas of mice or mice droppings can be at risk,” says Dr. Ifeoma Achebe, medical officer of health for the central zone. “It is essential that Albertans take precautions to protect themselves, and greatly reduce their risk of illness.” To safely clean mouse droppings, nests, or dead mice, observe these precautions: • Open doors and windows for ventilation, and keep out of the area for at least 30 minutes prior to

commencing clean up. • Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly soak droppings, nests and dead mice with a bleach/water solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or a household disinfectant. • Let the bleach water solution sit for five minutes. • Never disturb any droppings, nests or dead mice, prior to soaking with this bleach solution. • Mop up bleach-soaked droppings, nest and/or dead mice, or pick up with paper towels, and place them in a plastic bag. • Seal the bag and put in a garbage container with a tight fitting lid. • Wash your gloves before removing, and then wash your hands. • Never vacuum or sweep droppings, nests or dead mice. This can create dust that can be inhaled. The
dust may contain hantavirus. Albertans dealing with significant mouse infestations or with mouse infestations in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation should contact Health Link Alberta, at 1-866408-5465, to discuss necessary special precautions. Although hantavirus infection is rare, it can be fatal. Individuals infected with hantavirus generally show symptoms one or two weeks after exposure, however symptoms have been known to appear up to five weeks after exposure. Symptoms resemble severe flu, including fever, body aches, chills, abdominal prob-
lems and severe breathing problems. “It is very important that anyone who has recently been in an area contaminated by mice and who has subsequently developed severe flu-like symptoms or difficulty breathing see a doctor immediately,” Achebe said.

Ratepayers Continued from Page 1 However, Rimbey is only one of many communities struggling to keep the downtown businesses afloat. “The Main Street in Sundre is empty (as well),” added Coambs. As much as issues such as revitalizing Main Street and tax incentives must not be shoved under the carpet, its important candidates have their own platform. “The idea is not to put forth issues, let them develop them, themselves,” said vice-president Jim Moore. The Rimbey Ratepayers’ Association’s vision is to raise awareness on issues of concern in the community and be a voice on behalf of the ratepayers. The association is also to enhance Rimbey as a caring community and serve as an observer and commentator on municipal affairs. The next ratepayers’ meeting is Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Nomination day for the upcoming election is Monday, Sept. 23 and nomination papers must be handed into the town office between 10 a.m. and noon.

The Rimbey Review, Sept. 3, 2013 15
Rimbey Mounties have zero tolerance for drunk drivers Last week, the Rimbey RCMP responded to 53 calls for service. Highlights include thefts, impaired drivers, assaults, uttering threats to kill, sexual assault, and other criminal matters. Arrested with hair of the dog On Aug. 26, at approximately 10:30 am, a Rimbey Mountie arrested a 66-year-old woman for impaired driving. She was parked at a local liquor store as she was stocking up for the day but had not yet wore off the previous night’s spirits. The woman advised the officer, “I always reads the police report and knows youse guys are clamping down on drunk drivers.” As a result of her breath samples being over the legal limit of .08 she was criminally charged for impaired driving and her license was immediately suspended pending her court outcome. In addition, her pickup truck was also seized and towed to the impound lot. Every week, impaired drivers are being arrested in Rimbey. If you read this report and you are thinking of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, take heed. There is no tolerance for drunk driving. You will lose far more then you will gain. So please, plan ahead and don’t drink and drive. Litterbug and then some In the big cities you will see garbage looters but here in Rimbey we have garbage can thieves. Unbelievably, a thief dumped out the garbage found in two large green garbage cans in a community at the north end of Gull Lake and stole the cans. The litterbug then relocated them to his residence in Rimbey where he set them out in the back alley for his own use. Unbeknownst to him, these expensive garbage receptacles each have their own serial numbers. Police located them and arrested the 24-year-old man for theft and returned the cans to the garbage collection company. Police have charged the accused with theft and he will appear in Rimbey court on Oct. 4. Keep documents up to date Mounties charged several drivers with operating a motor vehicle without valid insurance. The fine for first time offenders is $2,875 and $5,000 for a second offence. The fine for not producing a valid pink slip to an officer if stopped is $172.

Please remember to check your glove box to ensure you have your updated pink slips and registration certificates on hand if requested. They always get their man Another wanted man was arrested this week. He also had his vehicle seized and towed to the impound lot. If you are ducking and weaving trying to avoid unpaid fines or an arrest warrant, you might as well turn yourself in — you’ll save money in the long run on chiropractor bills from looking over your shoulder all the time. If you have any information regarding this or any other crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 8432224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T. Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work. Do your part and call now.
Witnesses say a 24-year-old Bentley man is lucky to be alive following a single-vehicle rollover on Secondary Highway 766 south of Highway 53 early Aug. 29. The vehicle landed upside down, crushing its roof to the top of the car door. Rimbey RCMP said the collision occurred around 2:15 a.m. The man, who was wearing a seatbelt, was alone in the vehicle. He was treated for minor injuries at the Rimbey hospital and later released. Police believe alcohol was a factor. Charges are pending. APN Photo

Pony show hat trick Submitted
At the recent Welsh Pony Year End Show in Red Deer, Bruce and Linda Christensen of Dragonfly Hill Welsh showed three ponies among 100 head shown in all. They were conditioned and prepped by the Christensens and shown by Robyn Andersen of Bluffton. The Section C (cob) filly Stonecountry Clover won her yearling class and the junior championship under both judges. She went on to be named Supreme Junior Champion by one judge and later in the show competed against the older mares and stallions to win one reserve Grand Champion placing. Pretty good showing considering Clover had gashed her left eyelid on the trip to Red Deer, had a perfect stitch job by Marcos, a vet at Central Vet Services and was declared fit to show. Her eye has healed beautifully. The second, and the one they are proudest of, is a homebred Section B gelding Dragonfly Hill Folkhero. This lovely gelding went through all of his classes first under one judge and second under the other to win the two and under gelding class, a Champion Sec. B placing and a Supreme Champion Gelding. He also placed reserve under the
second judge all the way through. This was their first homebred to go to the shows. Cherish, a filly the Christensens have owned since she was four months old, a Section A fouryear-old, wowed the judges with her awesome trot and her Welsh typiness to win under both judges in the mare class, both senior mare titles, Grand Champion Mare and to add icing to the cake under one judge she was named Best of Breed and then Champion of Champions. An offer to buy her right there was turned down. She is in foal to an imported stallion, so the

In Memoriam
ROETTGER-EMMONS Eleanor Margaret May 4, 1933 - August 19, 2013
GARDNER
After a long illness, at peace with her God and her world, Ellen Emmons passed away at Bethany Senior’s Home in Red Deer. Eleanor had one brother, Alfred (deceased); and a younger sister, Dorothy (Hanna), who is retired now, and lives in Nanaimo, B.C. It’s not easy being married to the Army. With two sons, and thirteen years of service behind him, Lew Emmons left the armed forces, and the family moved west in 1969, from Pembroke-Petawawa, Ontario. Approximately five years after moving to Alberta, Ellen and Lew Emmons divorced. Ellen moved to Rimbey, where she remained for the next twenty eight years. She had several boy-friends in later years, but never re-married. There will be no memorial or funeral service for Ellen Emmons. That is the way she wanted it; that is the way it will be done. Not that she chose to go out quietly, or without pride in her life’s accomplishments. Simply the way she wanted it. Let us all remember, individually, to ourselves, what “the prettiest little thing on roller skates that Pembroke had for years” (my father’s words) meant to us. I will be assembling a “book of memories” things that Mom wrote, cards, photos, etc. for history’s sake. Much the same as I did with Brian (Lew). If anyone wants to contribute to that, simply send it to Ellen Emmons, c/o myself, Rimbey Post Office, and I will get it. Donations to “TrueHope.com” down in Raymond, Alberta would be very beneficial. True Hope has a completely natural supplement that had helped thousands of people now with ATF, fibromyalgia, bi-polar and other chemical imbalances in the brain. There is no way that I would have made it through all of this, first with younger brother, and then mother, without the help of others. The people that have stood beside me, trusted and valued friends for so long, words do not cover it. Loyalty speaks for itself. There is a hospital in Ponoka called The Centennial Center. it is not an “insane asylum:. Nor is it a “crazy house”. It is, like the others that we have here in Alberta, one of the very best hospitals for the mentally ill that there is in North America. The people there prove it on a daily basis. To the small, and truly dedicated group of people at the Red Deer and Foothills Hospital. I would not be here, without S.T.A.R.S. You went far above duty and job, to keep me alive (and succeeded so well), last year when I had my own physical health issues; thank you so much. If I wanted a good holiday from life, Bethany, College Side Senior’s Home in Red Deer would rival any tropical country. To the administration, for understanding that health effects wealth, and a staff of people at Bethany that are the pride of the industry, again, many many thanks. And that small, wonderful regional hospital in Rimbey. After eight rounds, in and out, over two years, the nurses and doctors were honest enough to tell me that they had done all they could. Mom, you did just fine. Kevin Emmons
Sadly we say goodbye to Eunice Carol Gardner (nee Odland) who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday August 24, 2013 in the Rimbey Hospital at the age of 79 years. Eunice was born at Carlos, Alberta on February 6, 1934. She grew up in this area and took her schooling at Sleepy Valley. As a teenager, Eunice worked at the Rocky Hospital. On May 4, 1955, Eunice was united in marriage to William (Bill) Gardner and together they farmed west of Leedale, where Eunice resided until her passing. Eunice was a very unique, humble, talented, kind lady. She loved to write poetry, play music (by ear). Eunice was always an avid sewer, sewing many projects for her family, as well she loved woodworking, and not last or least she loved her animals. Eunice’s family played a major role in her life. Anyone who knew Eunice will not forget her quick witted humor she possessed. Eunice will be forever lovingly remembered by her daughter, Helen (Bobby Lee); son, Tom (Tracey); grandchildren, Danielle (Dalom) Blair, Riley, Josh, Alena; great grandson Jacob, son-in-law, Mike Fortin as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Eunice was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Lena; two brothers, Lawrence and Luke; two sisters, Nellie Glover, Beulah Phillips; husband, Bill and daughter Wilma Fortin. A celebration of Eunice’s life will be held from the Leedale Community Hall on Thursday August 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL serving Central Alberta with locations in Rimbey and Lacombe in charge of the arrangements. Phone: (403) 843-3388 or (403) 782-3366. “A Caring Family, Caring For Families”
Welcome Home Little One!
